Everything is shiny and new by Arjuna Ardagh

You are probably reading this article, here on The Edge, rather than looking at cute pictures of kittens on Facebook or bad Lorde parodies on YouTube, because you feel a longing inside yourself for something deeper, more real, and more alive than the familiar. The trouble with this kind of longing is that it is more of a gnawing feeling deep inside you than a neat spelled-out formula. That longing is probably something that your mind cannot understand, even if it is at the same time something that your heart cannot forget. So what do you do, when you are completely taken over with lovesick yearning, but you cannot remember the name or email address of your true beloved? You look for guidance from those who seem to know. In this spirit of innocently looking for sage advice from the seasoned and the wise, many of us have turned to ancient traditions from Tibet or India or, in fact anywhere exotic and different. Anywhere as far away from New Jersey as we can find. There, that fella over there, with the very long white beard, the sandals and the thick Oriental accent, he is definitely not a member of my parents’ golf club. He probably has the scoop on liberation. There is a catch, however. These days everything is different and shiny and new. We are hurtling through time and space, you and me, on a high speed train called evolution. And it has never been going faster than it is today. Yesterday’s rulebooks, and tried-andtested formulas, are already out of date, and we are pioneers in untrodden territory. Now, and now, and now. Here are seven important ways how spirituality today requires a total reboot and a fresh start:  Only a few years ago we were, most of us, seeking for peak

experiences. Today that is “Oh so ’90s.” Most people interested in spiritual life today are more interested in embodiment than fleeting highs, more interested in living it in daily life than tasting it. That requires a whole new set of tools and understanding.

 The idea of enlightenment as a point of arrival has, in the last

years, come under a great deal of scrutiny. Pioneers like Ken Wilber have pointed out that we evolve along multiple “lines of development,” so there can never be a final state of arrival. Sure, you might have the meditation piece down pat. Congratulations. Now, how is your marriage? Are your teens blown away with your presence as a parent?

 The vast majority of spiritual and religious traditions were

created by men, for men. So when we think we know so much about spiritual awakening and practice, we actually only know Shiny continued on page 7 

Move forward in 2014 From the Editor by Tim Miejan

“People usually consider walking on water or in thin air a miracle. But I think the real miracle is not to walk either on water or in thin air, but to walk on earth. Every day we are engaged in a miracle which we don’t even recognize: a blue sky, white clouds, green leaves, the black, curious eyes of a child -- our own two eyes. All is a miracle.” — Thich Nhat Hanh I love owls, so much so that my mom and step-dad buy owl figures for my birthday, or when they happen upon an owl at a garage sale, or when they see an owl while shopping for something else. Dozens of owls sit on a bookshelf display. Several larger prints of owls hang above them on my office wall. The other evening my wife and I watched a nature special, “Magic of the Snowy Owl.” We thought we’d see a documentary on what the owl represents, or perhaps how the Inuit people on the North Slope of Alaska view them. Magic and mystery of this beautiful bird. What we got was something more real. We observed a mother snowy owl as she hatched a brood of owlets, and a father snowy owl who sometimes flew several miles from his family to find fresh food. We saw the owlets grow quickly under the arctic sun. Polar bears trekked nearby, but didn’t catch the scent of the family of six. Rain and fog dampened the day and drove the catch du jour, lemmings, underground; there’d be no food until the sun reappeared over the tundra. Father owl eventually found a bountiful supply of lemmings, and he led his family away from the nesting ground, closer to the coast of the Arctic Ocean. But in order to get there, the four owlets had to traverse a potentially dangerous stream. They weren’t flying yet, just hopping, so who knew if they would survive the crossing. One by one, however, they waded into the water, outstretched their expansive, growing wings and paddled safely across. No one taught them how to cross the water. And until this recording, mankind had never seen snowy owlets swim. But each of them did so, and soon they were taking to flight and preparing to THE EDGE MAGAZINE 763.433.9291 P.O. head south for their first migration. What struck me about witnessing this program on snowy owls was the magic that was inherent in the birth and growth of these owls. No professor of ornithology was needed to explain anything, and no symbologist familiar with the meaning of owls was needed to tell us what they represent. The power was in life itself. And that’s the same for each of us. Our bodies may be larger and more complex than owls, but the experience of life is exactly the same. We can choose to hibernate in front of a computer or television and watch other people tell us what they think they know, or we can step outside and walk our own journey. When something like a potentially dangerous stream crossing comes along our path, we will intuitively know how to move across safely, or we will continue onward and discover another adventure that lies in waiting. My friend, Eric Keith, recently bought a small acreage in Northwest Missouri. In late October, he showed me around. We walked through brambles and saw the largest tree on the property and pondered the possibilities. He expressed uncertainty about making his dreams for the property come true, but what I love about Eric is that he keeps putting one foot in front of the next — even though he doesn’t know what is coming. As brave as a couple of snowy owls in the harsh tundra with eggs in the nest, Eric reminds me that life is to be lived, not dissected from afar. For the magic is revealed not by being told what can happen, but by creating that which is aching to be expressed. a Tim Miejan is editor and co-publisher of The Edge. Living life from the Zero Point: Be who you are — a Spiritual Hero by Julie Tallard Johnson

“In Lakota framework, everyone is a meaning maker; everyone must make sense of his or her experience. ‘Woableza’ has been translated as ‘realization.’ It has always seemed to me that this word acknowledges that each person has a capacity to make meaning; that understanding is very personal, is timed by him or her, and is not predictable; and for woableza to exist, a change in the person should take place.” — Gerald Mohatt, The Price of a Gift In the Buddhist tradition, a bodhisattva (a spiritual hero) lives to reverse self-absorption in order to be of benefit to others. This is true of many spiritual and humanitarian practices, such as in the Toltec and Earth traditions — a shared precept is to lose our self-centeredness. Nothing is all about you. (Or me.) However, to radically transform negativity or to create positive experiences, we need a healthy sense of self. So, also like a bodhisattva, living from the zero point, we are given a way to transform the world from within with a strong sense of confidence — a strong sense of self. It takes courage to live life from our side with humility, confidence and awareness. It takes courage to be creative. It takes confidence to be a meaning maker. At the same time we cannot gain awareness, confidence or even courage through seeking it. Instead we explore the practices and approaches that allow these qualities to arise naturally and spontaneously. (And they do!) So the zero point agreement asks us to live courageously and confidently from our side (“I live life from my side”) as we transform the world around us — one experience and conversation at a time. You are the zero point. So there is no need to seek outside of your self. At the same time, it is only from the zero point that confidence and courage, along with creativity and generosity can be explored and expressed. No one else can run the race, enjoy the fine meal, write the novel or love your partner in your place. This life is yours to live. So we don’t go in search of meaning; we become the meaning maker within the context of our daily lives. We don’t let circumstances boss us around. In fact, living fully from the zero point gives us ways to use even the most difficult circumstances as an opportunity for making meaning. As I write this article for The Edge, I am surrounded by my beautiful home and land,

8

as well as about a dozen other writers. I offer free open retreat days at my home and seasonal retreat center for those seeking creative refuge. I do this in celebration of the poet William Stafford and for all us poets. It’s good to gather together and share in the energy of creativity and ideas. On the day I am writing this article (the last open day of the year) a new visitor looked around and said to me smiling, “You are living your dream.” Yes, I am — not only through this beautiful log home we built, but through the practices I have found that bring my dream to me, as well as in the sharing of my dream. He said he knew I was living the dream by the way I greeted everyone. I have a dream worth sharing. The zero point is the place dreams are made. Your happiness, creativity and success all come down to living life from your side — no matter what the circumstances. When each of us realizes that we are our own meaning maker and that we participate in the world from our place in the whole, we will find the meaning in making the meaning. Life then becomes a series of inspirational moments, bursts of insight, eruptions of creativity, and even personal revelation. Each moment becomes alive with opportunity, possibilities, and rewards. As Daniel Kahneman writes in his book, Thinking, Fast and Slow, “When you analyze happiness, it turns out that the way you spend your time is extremely important.” Central to the book and the message of the zero point is the wisdom of the Heart Sutra. The Heart Sutra is the core teaching throughout the different Buddhist traditions, but it is again found in the core of

indigenous and humanitarian wisdom. The Heart Sutra explains how no single condition can cause anything — it is through a collection and continuum of causes and conditions that result in an effect. The creation of a dream comes from many causes and conditions of which you are at the zero point. We can learn how to participate in this “continuum” and live a life rich with meaning and fulfillment. You can tap into this continuum of causes and conditions and find yourself living your dream. And it isn’t complicated — it gets down to being who you already are and being present to the potentiality of the present experience. “Does the rose have to do something? No, the purpose of a rose is to be a rose. Your purpose is to be yourself. You don’t have to run anywhere to become someone else.” — Thich Nhat Hanh, on the Heart Sutra, taken from The Heart of Understanding In closing, I want to share this short anecdote. A client came to me recently for some guidance around something urgent. Her mother was in the final stages of breast cancer. They had a history of a rocky relationship. She wanted some ideas on how to handle this difficult passage with her mother. I use this story to set out a reminder for all of us — to practice living life from your side every day, so that when difficulty strikes (as it will), you are prepared and well-skilled. So that living life from your side and being yourself arises naturally in the moment. Find practices that resonate with you and activate them in your daily life. Or work with difficulty when it is small (such as a negative emotion like anger when it 

Your January Yoga

Mountain pose practiced daily to empower your highest intentions. Stand with your big toes anywhere from 3 inches apart to touching, depending on your body’s structure. Feel the four corners of your feet evenly pressing into the ground. Lift up slightly on your kneecaps to engage the quadriceps. Move your tailbone down towards the earth and raise your low belly up and inward to the spine. Take your ribcage in. Rest your shoulders down your back while flipping your palms to face forward. Lengthen the back of your neck as you reach up through the crown of your head. Remain active while energies balance themselves throughout your body. In your mind’s eye see a small white light at the base of your spine. Inhale this white light up the front of your spine to the crown of your head. Illuminate your crown as you hold your breath in for a moment. Exhale the healing white light from the crown of your head down the backside of your body. Continue this cycle for ten breaths. Release the visualization. Now, as you inhale, declare to yourself, “I am connected to my highest self.” As you exhale state, “I stand for my highest purpose.” Repeat for ten breaths. Bring your palms together over your heart. Namasté. a

Compassion, peace and gratitude are felt and expressed in the present moment or they don’t exist. In all moments, we can come from our highest purpose for each and every situation we are in. The Professor and the Guru Spirit Leaves by Janet Michele Red Feather

There are no accidents. In browsing my favorite thrift store, I came upon an invaluable treasure. The synchronicity of this particular find was instantly exhilarating. Eagerly I clicked open the bulky, interlocking plastic snap case, thirsty for more spiritual input. Inside was a well-preserved set of eight cassette tapes: someone had recorded a series of lectures by Ram Dass. Ram Dass, a Harvard professor with a doctorate from Stanford, became enamored of Hindu culture and spirituality and traveled to India to meet his guru, Neem Karoli Baba. Thirsty for growth and longing to attain realizations, only later would Ram Dass come to grips with his initial arrogance, a tendency to be self-possessed of the importance of one’s own mission in life. In the early persona of the academician and spiritual querent, I saw a reflection of myself. Ram Dass braved planes, trains and buses. Once inside the ashram, the professor did all he could to engage his guru’s attention. Unfortunately for the young lecturer, his esteemed guru Neem Karoli Baba had more pressing concerns — like the degree of hunger, disease and poverty within his beloved India. To his horror and astonishment, Ram Dass was virtually ignored as the guru devoted his attention to other spiritual aspirants. Ultimately, Ram Dass confronted his guru with tears and protestations. “What can I do, Holiness?” He implored pathetically. “What assignment do you have for me? I know I have a larger purpose in life. Please, tell me — what should I do?” Baba, as he was lovingly known, closed his owl’s eyes of wisdom and said quietly, “You want to do something with your life? Feed the people.”

Ram Dass (courtesy of RamDass.org) That was it? Feed the people? Ram Dass had traveled a long way, both physically and spiritually. He had lectured to hundreds of students at home, meditated with thousands more abroad. Had he finally gained a personal audience with his spiritual guide and mentor, only to be told something so utterly innocuous and trifling? This is what I have gleaned from the stories of Ram Dass and other spiritual teachers. We begin to live a spiritual life the moment we accept how profoundly insignificant we are in the cosmic scheme. I learned this myself while fasting and praying upon a butte overlooking beautiful Lake Sacagawea. I awaited great visions, only to be reduced to a shivering, crying child assailed by wind, rain, cold, bellowing cows, a swarm of bloodthirsty mosquitoes, and a few bees. Humbled, I wept and prayed for the Guides to come closer to me and listen, and at last, they did.

To Baba, every living being is a face of God — another mask of the Beloved. The Nueta — the Mandan People — have always known this. They regard everything that exists as Holy. When they pray, they say Numak k ki ama wa (All my Relatives). They say this to affirm that every being is Sacred. Thanks to my teachers, I have come to realize that every sentient being is worthy of my love and devotion. As I step outside the filter of my own importance, I am more able to sense the spirit of every tree, every leaf, every bird, every snowflake, every human being. Recently, I attended the Edge Life Expo in Minneapolis. At a booth featuring Tibetan devotional items, a beautiful woman named Karma said something that stopped me in my spiritual tracks. We were having a spiritual conversation about Buddha and his many manifestations, and she said to me, “Some of these Beings have stayed around for millions of years just to help us.” Her comment made me lower my head, almost involuntarily. I have to work on myself all the time. I meditate, pray, sing devotional songs, read and reflect. I do not yet awaken automatically in a state of grace every morning. I have to make an effort. Realizing Immortality: Past life regression awakens Soul Memory by Eric Christopher The most important insight that past life regression offers is the realization that you are an immortal being. You are a soul here and now, which means that you never die. Something that would significantly help the planet would be for individuals to wake up to their immortality. Evidence of our immortality is reflected in many cases of accurate past life recall. As we deepen in the awareness of our immortality, it slowly dawns on us that we are merely role-playing here. The goal of this game of human life is to find happiness. We search outside of ourselves for a while until a turning point in the soul’s evolution steers our focus inward. As we deepen our search, we can experience peace, lightness and love, until one day realizing that these states are not states at all, but characteristics of the deepest part of our being, available when we’re free of the mind’s buzzing turmoil. Eckhart Tolle points out that the key to this freedom is to take the focus off of the content of our minds and place it on the eternal “beingness” or pure, unfiltered conscious-awareness that provides the backdrop of all of our mind’s content…the part of you that can be aware of a passing mood or thought. Yet, forgetfulness happens repeatedly, and again we identify with the human part of us that is burdened with our opinions and worries until we once again remember the truth of our being. The human experience is one of forgetfulness, and also of getting lost…lost in the world of the mind and all of our beliefs about what’s true, about who we are, and things on the to-do list. This is my challenge, as it is for most of us.

A natural quality of waking up to the most permanent part of you is acceptance. As we live from surrendered acceptance, we can fully participate in the ups and downs that life offers without wanting to escape or be fearful. There is a natural acceptance of “what is,” even if it brings unwanted emotions, because it becomes safe to fully feel emotions. When you know you’re role-playing, any emotion can be a rich, textured experience, even the grief from loss. I know people who won’t allow themselves to love again because of the pain of loss. Past life regression usually unveils the illusion of loss, making it safe to love, and feel hurt, and then deeply love again. It also cuts through the illusion of fear, allowing you to know what it would feel like to securely live from your full potential, free of any limiting beliefs and subtle anxieties that hold you back. A natural acceptance of others’ beliefs is an important, key by-product of identifying with our true immortal selves, given the diversity on our planet. Nobody’s beliefs or dogmas, including our own, need to be taken personally. It’s recognized that all beliefs are products of the human conditioning process, and who and what we ultimately are transcends all beliefs. Then we can accept one another. We don’t have to agree with or even like each other’s limiting beliefs, but there can be a recognition that beneath all beliefs there is something in common….we are immortal, we come from the same energy source, and we have each blindly forgotten this truth. Yet, that’s not a problem, because it’s that way by design. It’s the play of the divine Oneness, also known as God’s “Lila” in the Hindu tradition,

that we’re all a part of. The goal of this play is to awaken to who we really are, and, therefore, out of our judgments of ourselves and others. Adyashanti says the best indicator of our spiritual growth is how accepting and tolerant we are with those of opposing belief systems. From the vantage point of the highest dimension of yourself, there is no effort to accept, you are acceptance itself because everyone and everything else is a part of you, whether they’re conscious of that fact or not. Furthermore, it’s impossible to be separated from this part of you, as it’s the backdrop of your beingness. It merely gets overlooked during the human hypnotic experience. A deep inner journey, whether self-guided or guided, can make this evident. It has been said by many that it is imperative that we wake up to our immortality that transcends all of our worries and judgments about ourselves and others. When we can sense and know the sameness beneath our differences, then we can realize that we are all one consciousness, albeit lost and operating through seven billion unique filters of programming and conditioning, resulting in various degrees of suffering. The natural emotion that arises from this realization is compassion. The differences that divide can be washed away by a mere perception shift towards truth and away from the illusion that is mind-created. As Thich Nhat Hanh says, “We are here to awaken from the illusion of our separateness.” That which divides is illusion. In fact, the only thing that separates anyone from all of their divine qualities is an illusory thought and perspective. This is not a philosophy, but a truth that can be known only in one’s own direct immediate experience. Deep inner journeys such as past life regression can help you remember not only the truth of yourself, but everyone. What is the next level of evolution that your soul is nudging your personality to experience? Breathe better, feel great in just three minutes a day by Deanna Reiter & Troy Stende Everybody breathes. It’s a fundamental activity that we do all day every day. Even though it’s necessary, it’s something that we ignore. The reality is that over 90 percent of us are using less than 50 percent of our breathing capacity. We are inhaling very shallowly, taking in a minimal amount of oxygen. On the flip side, our exhalations are also marginal, which releases only a small amount of carbon dioxide. By taking in a less than ideal amount of oxygen, we are not fueling our blood and bodies with sufficient energy. By not expelling enough carbon dioxide, we are harboring toxins and wastes in our blood streams and organs. Shallow breathing does not provide sufficient oxygen to our brain or other cells and has been linked with degenerative disease, poor quality of life and an early onset of death.

Low-oxygen environments In 1931, Otto Warburg won a Nobel Prize for the connection he discovered between oxygen and cancer. His studies showed that the number one cause of cancer is a lack of oxygen in the cellular environment. Warburg determined that cancer cells are anaerobic, meaning they thrive in an oxygen-depleted environment. Conversely, cancer cells cannot live in an oxygen-rich environment. What Warburg discovered for cancer is true for all degenerative disease. Oxygen and a healthy pH are the foundational keys to a healthy body. Breathing, the body’s most basic communication system, is the first thing we should examine when fatigue or disease occur. If you haven’t been diagnosed with a disease, how do you know if your breathing is shallow? Review this checklist to see if any of the following applies to you:  You experience shortness of breath.  You have chronic fatigue.  You have poor endurance. You wake up exhausted even after eight hours of sleep.  You sleep restlessly.  You suffer from allergies or asthma.  You are prone to colds and the flu.  You are frequently constipated.  You have pain in your shoulders and/or back.  You have weight problems. Although many of the above symptoms do not solely result from shallow breathing, a combination of three or more symptoms suggests that your oxygen levels may be low. Emotional stress and a sedentary lifestyle also contribute to chronically low oxygen levels in your cells, leaving you feeling exhausted and depleted. Environmental stressors, such as heat or air conditioning, cell phone usage, food additives, overeating, air, water and noise pollution also contribute to low oxygen. What if you don’t have a problem? First of all, it’s great if you’re not experiencing noticeable breathing problems. But better

breathing can still take your health and energy to the next level. You can experience this for yourself with Qi Breathing. This is an exercise that can help amp up your oxygen and energy levels: Qi Breathing technique Here’s a quick 3-minute breathing exercise that can leave you feeling energized and peaceful at the same time.  Step 1 — While sitting upright, spine straight, head level, take a few moments to slow your breathing and relax your body and mind. Let go of your mental to-do list and give yourself permission to take three minutes out of your day.  Step 2 — Focus on an intention you’d like to create as a result of this exercise. Make it simple. One word is best, such as peace, happiness, abundance, love, calm, focus, ease.  Step 3 — Begin to inhale and exhale deeply, yet quickly through the nose, so that your inhalations and exhalations are the same length of time, approximately one second each. Visualize the breath moving in a circle, up the back of the spine and down the front of the spine. This circular rhythm will help your Qi, or internal energy, to circulate and increase rather than to remain stagnant in your body. Incorporate a rocking movement with your breathing. On the exhalation, rock forward (toward your knees). On the inhalation, rock backward (upright). Make sure that your focus is on the inhalation and drawing in energy rather than on the exhalation. Bring your awareness fully to the breath and maintain your focus there to allow your mind to quiet. This can bring you into a deeply peaceful and blissful state while also feeling incredibly energized. (Breathe about 2 minutes.)  Step 4 — Slow your breathing to a relaxed rhythm. Take a moment to enjoy the increased energy, Qi, flowing through your body. Ideally, reflect with gratitude upon your intention.

Qi Breathing will attune you to your natural breathing depth and internal energy and help you to increase both over time. It is designed to give you more energy, clarity and helps you to focus and learn. We recommend doing this at least once a day. a Deanna Reiter, M.A., and Troy Stende are the developers of Qi Breathing. They will be teaching a 30-minute version of Qi Breathing on January 18-19 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Bloomington, MN. For more information on Qi Breathing, visit www.qibreathingrevolution.com. January horoscope

Take intentional action Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)… Your carefree, gypsy attitude towards money and stuff is one of your most charming traits. But January challenges you to get serious about money and resources. Identify the lack that blocks you from being the inspirational leader you were born to be. Then start creating a plan to get those missing resources into your life.

Star Wisdom by D.K. Brainard

We hit the heart of the Great Transition in January. Define what’s important to you, make the best plan you can, and take intentional action. Aries (Mar. 21-Apr. 19)…You need a bigger vision. The mission of the Starship Enterprise might serve as a good starting point: “To explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.” You also need to include crew members in your plan. No one makes it to the undiscovered country alone. Taurus (Apr. 20-May 20)…Until you know who you are, it’s hard to get what you want out of life — no matter how hard you work or how much willpower you exert. Make “knowing thyself” your number one priority in 2014. Question everything you’ve always believed. Practice looking at your life from a different perspective. The more you move off your spot, the more positive outcomes you will find. Gemini (May 21-June 20)…Do you believe, deep down, that the Universe supports you in achieving your life goals? Most of us secretly don’t, and our lives reflect it. A path to living life on a much bigger level opens in January. To access it, you need to learn everything you can about the places inside you that don’t believe Life is on your side. Cancer (June 21-July 22)… Imagine a life full of relationships that supported and nurtured you without draining your energy. Those nextlevel relationships are available to you in 2014, if you can learn the fine art of mastering boundaries. Remember that this is ultimately an internal process: once your self-esteem is healed, you won’t feel the need to either over-give or to armor yourself against the world. Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)…It’s hard to master self-discipline until you can connect it to your bigger purpose. Identify the places where you waste energy, time and money avoiding the boring or routine things that simply

need to be done. Then make a list of what you could achieve and enjoy in life if you had all that time and energy back. Use that vision to motivate you to create better routines and become a disciple of yourself.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)…An opportunity to live more creatively is opening for you now. You might not feel you can afford to pursue your passion, but your chart says you can’t afford not to. In fact, learning to follow your bliss is a prerequisite for the financial or emotional support you crave in 2014. Of course, you need to be of service. So explore how doing what you love might actually serve one of society’s needs. Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)… Use January’s energy to honestly assess whether or not your current living situation is supporting you in achieving your goals. Look at where you want to be ten years from now and start creating a detailed action plan to create a better home base. Until you can feel safe, supportive, productive and creative at home, you’ll struggle to manifest your career and relationship goals. Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)…You need to seriously change your mind about something. It could be relationships, money, or what you need in order to feel successful or happy. Challenge yourself to see through the mental programming that keeps you trapped in limiting circumstances and unappealing choices. Your mind is the most powerful tool on the planet — it’s time you learned how to use it.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)… The turbocharged New Moon in your sign on the 1st sets the stage for the entire year by asking you, “Who do you think you are?” Make answering that question one of your main resolutions for 2014. So much is possible for you this year, but you have to break through your conditioning and achieve some level of self-realization to activate that potential. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)…This would be a great month to practice that famous Aquarian detachment. Let the world go crazy while you sit back and develop a clear picture of what’s coming around the bend. The information you download by allowing yourself to float in January will be worth far more than anything you could manifest by swimming against the current. Pisces (Feb. 19-Mar. 20)…You need to find your tribe this year. Your gift is to dream a better future and show it to the rest of us. But you can’t do that operating in isolation. You need a network of people who are both spiritually advanced and materially connected. Don’t let fear keep you isolated and don’t stop searching till you’ve found your people. a D.K. the energy of

2014 2014: Energy of Fulfillment by Michele Mayama My sense is that the energies of this coming year are very different than 2013. There are many deep levels of sorting going on in consciousness right now — and that probably will continue, just because that’s what needs to happen. It’s about sorting out what can’t go forward, things like shame and feelings of “I’m not good enough.” Those things can go now. We don’t need to keep using them for growth and healing. Those are aspects of consciousness that can just dissolve away. The feeling I have for 2014 is that it is about what it truly means to experience filling and fulfillment — and opening up greater access to that. The year 2013 was all about the shift. It was a very intense year for a lot of people, but 2014 feels different. It feels like it’s about:  Greater fulfillment on a personal level.  Learning about what true nourishment is from a personal experience, because we’re all specific.  Learning about real and true abundance. It includes money, but it has nothing to do with intention and trying to get what you want. It’s really about access to what is all present, meeting us where we are at in every moment.  Deepening our trust, our receptivity and access to that level of responsiveness to what we need, what we feel, to what’s opening up to be created. So, 2014 feels like it is about learning deeper qualities of presence, deeper qualities of receptivity, deeper qualities of access and what that means in every moment, and deeper qualities of fulfillment. I also like the word “synergy” for 2014. That’s been coming up. Synergistic relationships are starting to form with greater mutuality. By putting different things together, something new that you didn’t expect is created. This synergistic energy may not be so present at the beginning of the year, but it will evolve. On a larger scale, be aware that we all are still sorting out our personal priorities in life, such as anything that grips us with fear and takes us out of who we are. Reality is dissolving and it’s losing energy — and people are fighting to maintain their control of it and amping up fear. Keep your attention away from that. What’s taking place is another level of prioritizing. People are saying, “That doesn’t really matter. This matters.” That is part of the sorting process. I teach my clients and students to bring the third eye “back and down,” to quit focusing externally on others and on the future. Connect with your own inner experience — your own knowing — and sync up to this living conscious field that we’re all part of now. An external focus directs our attention to, “Well, I have to

make something happen out there.” If we’re synced up with our own core — with the field — it’s only about what you’re opening up to in the moment. You can say “go with the flow,” but there’s a little more acknowledgment of what your experience is and staying really clear in the present with that so you can still open access, rather than trying to control. Opening access is more powerful now in this new creation than trying to “make something happen.” It doesn’t mean you don’t choose. We make choices, and we follow through with what has energy and life. But it’s not a woeful, “I have to make this happen or control this.” That is dissolving, along with the fear. It’s much more present. “What am I experiencing in this moment? What do I have energy for — life for — in this moment?” Where is the synergy? Have that sense of what’s coming in, and be able to sync up with it. What is mutual? All relationships in the new field are mutual, rather than equal. It’s about learning what mutuality is, as opposed to equality. We’re on a learning curve. a Michele Mayama has facilitated group and individual change for almost 30 years, and for 19 years she and Chris LaFontaine have together traveled globally in planetary service, and created numerous events offering both timely information and experiential, transformative processes. 2014: Energies beyond the Shift by Sara Wiseman

We had such high hopes for the Shift — the new age dawning in 2012 and continuing in 2013. And in fact, much of these did come true — these were heady years of releasing old patterns for most of us, especially old thought patterns contained in the collective soul. In 2014, we’ll see more of this transition or Shift and much of it is very, very difficult for humankind, the animal and plant kingdom, and the earth itself — great chaos, disaster and suffering will continue this year. This is what happens when seven billion souls all attempt to wake up at the same time. Many of us are grumpy at being shaken from the old dream, and many are not able to withstand the Shift at all. Overall, 2014 is a gentler year. It’s as if we’ve actually evolved a little bit. We understand where we need to go, and even if we’re not there yet, at least we’re pointing in the right direction. We don’t live in fear the same way we used to. In 2014, this much is true: the more you let go of the old paradigm, the more the new paradigm begins to show up in your life. Here are 11 signs to watch for:  Time shifts. You’ll notice that time isn’t running on the same schedule as it used to; you’ll experience great passages of “no time” or being unable to remember time that has passed. Nowness becomes real.  Spiritual awakening. The great leap forward continues for millions. Many of you will begin to experience great passages of true awakening. This is world wide.  A new healing emerges. The health insurance fiasco is a sign that we are moving from the fear-and-scarcity based systems of health to a new way. Energy healing will become not just more mainstream, but more effective. The old models of illness are beginning to be released, even though we are still in the early stages.  Food as medicine. The GMO battle is one of the most significant of our time. We begin to understand and fight for the value of food as medicine and our source of health.  The ocean calls for help. The oceans, rivers and other bodies of water continue to use their force in weather and disaster to signal their great need for help.  The refugee becomes a symbol of our Oneness. What happens to the least of us, happens to all.  Transportation changes. Cars and oil dependency won’t be the same in five years.  Marijuana becomes legal in more states. This creates shifts that we won’t understand for another decade.  Human rights continue to be supported on all levels: civil, race, gender and age.  Child and teen leaders. The new generation speaks out as a force; watch for key martyrs and leaders to emerge, like Malala did in Pakistan. The younger generations are communicating with each other, and waiting for their time to lead.  The wise elderly. Boomers begin to have enlightenment left and right. Their ability to release and wake up from old paradigms is astounding. Many will be heroic for coming generations; this may also happen in your own family. a Sara Wiseman is a spiritual teacher and author of six enlightening books on spiritual intuition. 2014: Energy of Unconditional Love by Psychics in the Cities As 2013 drew to a close, hundreds of millions of people around the world joined in celebrating the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela, the man who will forever symbolize forgiveness and unconditional love for those who would do harm. It is a great blessing and a great challenge for each and every one of us to carry Mandela’s vision into 2014, to raise the universal vibration of love to a level never before seen in human history. To become aware of how we can project our own inner beauty and light to enrich those around us. To ease fear and to bring hope. Mandela’s death has brought light. Not all knew of this man and his life’s journey, but his peaceful, loving message has become worldwide knowledge because of the media, and this has surely made him smile. He always knew death would be another chapter — and an excellent means of reaching even more souls on this earth. His circle of love was his greatest triumph — not in the sheer numbers that he reached, but in how those he reached paid it forward. Our souls need to remember what it’s like to feel unconditional love. To love and be loved without judgment, to embrace our experiences, and, yes, even to thank those who have brought harm — those who have allowed their own light to dim so that we can learn and evolve. All of us together will decide what this next year will bring. The energy of unconditional love can prevail. This can be accomplished by the simplest acts of kindness. A smile. A gentle touch. To listen. To understand and accept, to embrace our differences. And to send nothing but love ahead of every step we take. a Psychics in the Cities are Judie Randall, Debra Battenfeld and Connie Braton — three Minnesota-based professional psychics who work together as a group. 2014: What to look for through the power of 7

2014: Surprises, Secrets & Solutions

by Deborah Lynn11 Numbers are much more than a medium of measurement, because they represent qualities — and they represent energy. The year 2014 is a number 7. In Numerology, that is arrived at by adding each of the numbers together: 2+0+1+4 =7. Seven is the number of magic and mystery, having the ability to see far beneath the naked eye, the analyzer, to be reserved and thoughtful, to listen and not speak, to go inward (to meditate), to obtain knowledge and wisdom, to enjoy solitude, to be philosophical and, most importantly, to educate. Universally, the year 2014 is going to educate us and help us gain knowledge, take an interest in the unknown, be sincere and have great depth of feeling. When we look at the meaning of the individual numbers in 2014, we see far more:  The number 2: Share and cooperate with others, be patient, be compassionate, and be considerate of others. My favorite definition of 2 is follow the Golden Rule and “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”  Zero stands for a circle; simply put, we can fill this circle with good things or bad things — the choice is ours. The important thing to remember with the zero is to complete as many things as we can, so have courage to finish the things that you start. The more you do this, the better things will be.  The number 1: Positive attributes are pioneering, powerful, aggressive, creative, independent, original, a leader, ambitious, decisive, single-minded, a self-starter who can totally take care of self; negative attributes are intolerant, obstinate, tyrannical, egotistical, lazy, lacking in self-confidence, and indecisive.  The number 4: Manifesting, taking unseen ideas and making them solid, to build, organize, to be frugal or practical, to be trustworthy, tenacious, having boundaries, to be firm, cautious, stable, devoted. In 2014, we are at a time when we can enjoy the magic of life. Take an interest in what others are saying; take time to enjoy your solitude. Read more, and start to meditate if you don’t do it now. Take an interest in the mysteries of life. Most importantly, listen to what others have to say. If a thought pops into your head, write it down for future reference. a

Stay alert and follow your intuitive resources to discover the source of your creative energy. Connecting and manifesting at the source of your passion energy will create a more powerful result. The energy of 2014 will encourage you to read, go to classes, and study information on the mystical world of Spirit. The more you know about the unseen metaphysical world, the quicker you are able to manifest your desires. There are lots of movies being produced about the Spirit world, so if you don’t like to read, go see a movie! Lessons for 2014: Develop and trust your intuition. Learn and apply mystical secrets. Putting Spirituality into Action T H I S M O N T H ’ S F E AT U R E D T O P I C

Redefining spirituality by Keri Mangis

“I’m not religious, I’m spiritual.” Over the years I’ve heard this repeatedly in spiritual circles (and truth be told, I’ve said it myself). Most people nod in understanding, but what does it really mean to be spiritual in the modern age? Wikipedia states there is no definitive or agreed upon definition of “spiritual.” So, while the jury is out, allow me to propose a definition that responds to today’s individual and collective needs: Spirituality is a process of awakening into and embracing the sacredness of all life. It is a journey of remembering who we are — our humanness and our divinity alike — through which we reclaim our unique gifts and then unabashedly, courageously and tirelessly shine these gifts directly from our heart into the world for healing, happiness and peace. First, spirituality is a process of awakening into and embracing the sacredness of all life. While “spirituality” may conjure up images of retreating from day-to-day life to reflect, meditate, pray and fast, these days there are so many seekers of all ages and from all walks of life who are spiritually hungry right now but have families, jobs, errands and commutes, which make retreating infrequent at best. While retreating is an immensely rewarding experience, we simply cannot afford to live the majority of our lives in suspension, holding our breath for the moment we can get away and be “spiritual” at some retreat or foreign country (or a meditation cushion!). This approach to spirituality leads to frustration, anger, hostility and deep sadness, as it separates and compartmentalizes our lives, leaving us half awake and spiritually empty. This new definition of spirituality invites us to be fully present to witness and participate in the sacredness within all stages and circumstances of life. We cease separating the “mundane” from the “spiritual” and instead merge them together. This is it, right here: this traffic jam, this sandwich, this conversation. There are gifts just waiting to be opened inside a child’s laugh, a clean toilet or a failed relationship. Open your heart to all of it. Feel. Hurt. Laugh. Cry. Yell. This is what it means to be alive, and nothing is more spiritual than being alive and knowing it. Secondly, it is a journey of remembering who we are — our humanness and our divinity alike. We hear it often in spiritual circles: “We are divine beings, having a human experience.” But how many of us secretly wish to skip over the muddy, imperfect and painful human experiences and abide only the divine, enlightened and ethereal

 This new definition of spirituality invites us to be fully present to witness and participate in the sacredness within all stages and circumstances of life. ones? Or conversely, how many deny our divinity, cloaking it under false humility that serves neither us nor the world? We are both imperfectly human and perfectly divine. Our humanness provides experiences and lessons, allowing us to shed layers of false truths, masks and limitations. Our divineness empowers us with wisdom and inner knowledge, liberating us from dependency on any outside authority or guru to emulate or venerate (community support is important, however). By remembering and honoring all of who we are, we cultivate wholeness, authenticity and integrity. Finally, we reclaim our unique gifts and then unabashedly, courageously and tirelessly shine these gifts directly from our heart into world for healing, happiness and peace. Each of us is tasked to serve and contribute healing to the world’s countless needs in a unique and inimitable way. Like a facet of a diamond, we each sparkle uniquely when we let light through. Once we understand, embrace and hone our gifts, we rise up, shake off society’s limiting views dictating how and when we can be of service and courageously share them whenever and wherever we are. It’s time to discard old images of spirituality and adopt a definition that is empowering and engaging, one that allows us to pick up the reins in our lives and lead by example — a kind of spirituality that is all-encompassing, all-embracing, and powerfully grounded in compassion and loving-kindness. The world is counting on us to return from the mountaintops and practice spirituality as a way of life: witness and participate passionately in the sacredness of life, fully embrace who we are, and share our profound healing gifts with abandon each and every day. a Keri Mangis, CAP, ERYT200, is a passionate and radical seeker for truth and wisdom and is willing to go to the ends and depths of the earth to find it, while at the same time realizing that it can only be found inside our own hearts. Look for Magic in life by Jen Hillman

Paging through Facebook this morning, a quote (attributed to Lou Barlow) and graphic (by The Mentor’s Channel) caught my attention: “Look for the magic in the daily routine.” I was instantly reminded of my dread of routine. I could almost feel my shoulders droop and my head lower. Repetitive tasks, never completed, always needing to be done, endless…. Routine can seem the opposite of spiritual. Where is the awakening? The drama? The newness? The learning? Routine has all the enlightenment value of a hamster wheel – unless we look for the magic. When I find magic in a daily routine, the effect is magnified. Finding magic in a run-of-the-mill location or during drudge work can mean more than finding magic in an already magical place or state of mind. A heart-shaped stone on the path I’m walking. Stepping outside to walk my dog in my barely suburban yard and hearing an unusual sound – as a flock of swans chortles southward over my head. Cleaning up a long-neglected pile of papers and finding a hastily jotted idea that I had forgotten about. A solution or brand new idea while mucking a horse stall or doing the dishes.

Listening to my dog whimper in the car during errands and following her gaze to see a hawk perched and thoroughly hidden high in a tree in a tiny strip of urban woodland – invisible to all except me. Spirituality, to me, is connection — connecting to the rest of the world and the greater powers that surround us. Magic and synchronicity remind me of the intricacy of which I am a part. Instead of shoving my figurative hands in my pockets and sulkily kicking the dirt (as I’m wont to do), if I can pause…just pause… and look around…magic is always near at hand. What I can connect with, I can find value in – including myself. Bringing spirituality into my daily life leads to connecting with myself; noticing that I listened, saw, heard, felt, knew, or tasted that magic and appreciating my ability to do so. So even a hamster wheel has enlightenment potential. Study the wheel, feel the spinning, watch the scenery, hear the whirring, jump on and off every now and again – and see the Magic. a Jen Hillman of Cleveland Heights, OH, is a lifelong student of animals and a “recovering” engineer, currently a student and teacher of dogs, horses, and cats, who also works with people to facilitate personal growth and leadership skills in partnership with animals and nature as the owner of A Spirited Life, LLC. The Guru in You: Be your own spiritual teacher by Melissa Hanson It’s a dirty little six-letter word, the desire for which halted my early spiritual development with fixation and compulsivity. It seemed everyone had succumb to the trend. Everyone except me, it seemed, had a mentor. With more fervor than the munchies in search of Doritos, I was Plato in search of my Socrates, until finally one day, my frustration turned to determination. I realized the world had throngs of selfmade successes: Steve Jobs, for one, didn’t have a mentor, and he became one of the greatest examples of ingenuity and authenticity in our time. Better to build a spiritual practice from discarded parts in my garage, I thought, than to have it fed to me with a gilded spoon. The Richie Rich approach to spirituality seems to spur even less character

than Tom Hanks’ co-star in Cast Away [hint: it was a volleyball!]. So with my father’s sing-songy epithet echoing in my psyche, If I don’t do it…it won’t get done, I set out to forge my own path on the road to spiritual enlightenment. I was my own Thelma and Louise, and Lewis and Clark, and Moses, and Columbus all rolled into one. Blazing my own trail wasn’t always easy and often it was darn lonely, but I picked up insights along the way that will help you rev up your spiritual journey:  Out With the Old — A spiritual journey often begins by assessing your supplies for the trek ahead and purging that which will not serve you. Limiting relationships, excess baggage, lofty expectations, and weighty self-loathing will have to be tossed overboard. You won’t want it where you’re headed, plus you’ll need to make room for the enlightenment you’re going to pick up along the way. Sponge Tactics — I imagine this is   one step you’ve already mastered. It’s the act of soaking up all the spiritual content you can get your hands on. In this digital age overflowing with self-published books, blogs, and even tweets, there is no shortage of material ripe for the picking. Classes, workshops, and seminars are feasts for the soul, so go ahead and devour responsibly. Go Within —With the Vegas-scale all   you-can-eat buffet of spiritual content available today, it’s important to approach each lesson, each concept, each statement with a healthy dose of skepticism. Let your intuition be your litmus test for validity. You won’t like every chocolate in your

Valentine box of chocolates, and you’re not likely to put stock in every statement made by even your most trusted spiritual teacher. So savor it, swish it around a bit, and if it doesn’t taste right — if it doesn’t feel right in your gut — disregard it and move on. Build a Circle — The road can at   times be long…and winding…and dark… and bumpy…and exhausting. You’re going to want a warm, receptive group of souls for sharing ideas, frustrations and spiritual experiments. If you can’t find a group or circle in your area, Start one! Yes, you! Find Inspiration — Rather than feeling   paralyzed by comparison or mimicking another’s ideals, let the mere fact that they’ve accomplished something be your proof it can be done and get inspired to accomplish your own something. Don’t forget, of course, to be inspired by your own successes, as well. Wherever this beautiful journey takes you, remember that you weren’t put on this planet to be a carbon copy of Wayne Dyer or Gabrielle Bernstein or Oprah Winfrey. You came here, rather, to be the one true you. If you want it done right, my father also used to say, you might as well do it yourself. So dare to be bold. Realize that if you can dream it, you can do it, and [insert Sinatra crooning here:] you can do it your way. a Melissa Hanson is self-mentored author, psychic, medium, spiritual teacher, and angel-card reader. PUTTING SPIRITUALITY INTO ACTION

A Jewel awaits in Stillness by Efrén Francisco Solanas

What creative force manifests astoundingly inspirational individuals? What allows some human beings to become capable of realizing magnificence, often in spite of severe resistance? Nelson Mandela. Aung San Suu Kyi. Martin Luther King, Jr. Thich Nhat Hahn. Mahatma Gandhi. I speak their names aloud, vibrating with reverence for their accomplishments and the beauty of their humanity. I place their photographs on the walls of my home, looking upon them with tenderness, awe and respect. Because I work in the field of healing and spirituality, continuously surrounded by those who are striving to improve their lives and the lives of others, I am familiar with the question of how to put one’s spirituality into action. Honestly, I challenge the very premise and suggest that our primary focus needs to be directed towards realizing an intimacy with the Self. I admit my personal bias for explaining great humanitarian acts by attributing them to spiritual practice and divine inspiration. I cannot honestly say that all the individuals I honor and admire were adherents to a spiritual path. I study the lives of the magnificent ones in an attempt to understand what fueled their creativity and led to greatness. Human beings are gifted with consciousness and, yet, science and technology are still challenged to explain how it actually functions. The mystery is largely left uncharted. We also do not know what creates spiritual experience or how it inspires a paradigm shift. We only observe the results and marvel that somehow, contact with the spiritual fosters potent change. I have been increasingly adverse to the hype regarding spirituality, and in particular, enlightenment. The marketing of the mysterious, sacred aspects of human consciousness only serves to cheapen the experience. The materialism of the West is intent on molding spirituality into an object with an associated business model. Our divinity should not be distorted by superlatives and we must avoid the promise of a shortcut to ecstasy. Our spirituality is neither mechanical nor predictable. Life is a continuous stream of challenges. We are tested by circumstance and constant change. How we respond is a reflection of the quality of our inner life. If we react violently, it is likely because our mind is clouded by grief, regret, jealousy, competition, anger — any one of the many emotions that arise when we are not at peace with ourselves. If we meet the moment with equanimity, compassion and an open heart, it is confirmation that our inner world is in order and our glaze clear, free of the dark veil created by past injury or future desire. It is vital to know what motivates us and to be intimate with the many forces comprising our personality. The legacy of wisdom offered by master teachers from many spiritual traditions encour-

ages deep contemplation in order to meticulously examine what in the mind prolongs suffering and prevents access to liberation. I know from personal experience that once one is aligned with Stillness, a process is initiated that allows the turbulence of the mind to increasingly soften and quiet. A stable place of reference forms — a resource of peace, clarity and compassion that expands into all areas of life. This Stillness is aligned with our purest potential. Allowing regular contact with sacred Stillness increases the possibility that we live and express from the most magnificent of human values. The miracle of consciousness is an inherent aspect of us. It is our natural inheritance. The task is to clear the muddle so that we can live from the still place within. It is neither an expensive nor grueling task. It is exquisitely simple. The tools required are self-discipline and focus. We are invited to change our habitual vacillation between thoughts regarding the past and the future, to be diligent and patient in tending our inner world so that we can reside fully in the present. It is only in the present where we can locate Eternity’s gifts. Last November, alone, high in the Andes in a snowstorm, I met a profound, deep peace in myself. In spite of the circumstances, I was fully present. My concerns dissolved and I was softly, simply held by Eternity. A part of me still vibrates with the sense of oneness I encountered that night. I often return to this reference point in meditation. During my daily activities, I notice that the qualities I long to embody are finding natural expression: patience, compassion, and clarity. a Efrén Francisco Solanas is teacher and practitioner of Senderos de Luz, a combination of powerful multi-dimensional healing modalities. He also leads sacred trekking adventures in the Peruvian Andes. He was born in Southern California and currently makes his home in Minneapolis. OUR FEATURED TOPIC

The Rare Sands of Time by Rev. Richard W. Curney

The rare sands of time Tomorrow’s new precious hours Pouring into glass A challenge in each moment: to help others while respecting their spiritual growth. How do you wrap up love? Giving of your spiritual gifts is kinda like Christmas. You present a bowed up bit of bounty to your favorite people wrapped in thoughtfulness, wrapped in love. The toughest part of helping others is forever finding that fine line between giving an opportunity and fueling their self-worth. It’s easy just to throw love at a problem; it’s harder to direct that love to a person’s inner need.

One of the joys of getting old is to see the new patterns people paint on the fabric of old behaviors. The coolest thing is to watch a young bright light figure out kindness; figure out how to weave humor into the moment; figure out how magical the amazing new experience is that they are now in the midst of; figure out humility. It’s breathtaking how deep moments can be. I got the concept when I was a kid. Now, there are times when the far shore of a thought is off beyond the horizon. You can ride the seas of the moment in the craft of a thought. Sometimes it’s a pleasure cruise and you can allow the emotional provisions you store for your journeys to nourish your cruise. Sometimes it’s a business trip and answers to problems too distant for shore dwellers are fun to retrieve, especially if you find your thought catching winds of change. Spirituality in action is really just getting yourself ready to help others get themselves ready. World scriptures and enlightened

Living with kindness, high intentions by Debbie Lynn Laughlin When you live in kindness, spirituality is already in action, and that action will always speak louder than words.. There are everyday people doing everyday things, with nothing less than intentions for the highest good of us all. Most of these people would never consider what they are doing as anything other then basic morality. With that in mind, many would also concur that their actions really don’t need to have religion or spirituality attached to it. In fact, some would argue that if it does, the intention of basic goodwill becomes something else with an entirely different motive behind it — but this where good deeds and giving can become convoluted. Spirituality is not just “a thing to do”; it is a lifestyle. It is kindness at the very root of our being. It is inherent and is in each and every one of us — no matter what you call it. It is an inner source that leads to peace and betterment. When you live it, it shows and equates to simple love.

A very dear man I know is the most spiritual Soul I have ever met. He is also unequivocally anti-religious and anti-spiritual (or so he says), “Agnostic to the bone but without any claim to it.” He makes things happen with every ounce of energy he has, so I have coined him, “The King of Manifestation — personified.” To me, he represents the epitome of spirituality in action. Without prayer, chants, rites or rituals. No wishing boards, no beads, icons, seminars or retreats. He resonates effort. He has an amazing sense of humor, doesn’t take things personal, and he gives and shares his prosperity constantly. He has a good life and he wears it well.

He stays mindful, peaceful, and thoughtful — always. Calm in horrific danger, happy in adventure, and loves to give. This is the art of a “spiritual being,” because his beliefs are accomplished simply by deciding to do and to be with the highest intentions to get it done. The motives are not attached to an “ism,” just true heart-felt convictions. Has he had loss and failure? Of course, more than you or I could ever imagine, and yet, it just reinforced his compassion, made him stronger and determined to do more. He discovered that action is the key to happiness — and doing is no “Secret.” Turning disruptions into gold (not to ever dwell on them), he is internally thankful for what life has shown him. For some, like this man, doing and giving is the only way to be. Acting upon without recognition (because recognition isn’t even a thought.) And for others, the motivation is purely self-serving. The line is a fine one, because there is also the other side of the coin that says all giving, no matter what the intention, is giving — and it truly helps so many in need. In essence, the universal laws are really easy. What goes around comes around; the echo is beautifully reflective and unforgiving. Call it “karma” (which has no affiliation with judgment good or bad), call it energy in and energy out, call it whatever you want. The motion is just a motion and it all ends up exactly how it was presented. But, the act of kindness, accountability and logic do equate to a good life, a healthy life, with an echo that has nothing to with spirituality or religion and everything to do with inner contentment.

On a deeper level, it would be advisable to understand the motives and the ego/ mind, because in the end, the only one we have to answer to is our self and or a higher power (if that resonates with you). But, no matter where or what the beliefs are, the actions that bring a smile and simple joy to another have far more reaching effects than what meets the eye. The smallest gestures can have huge implications. What we do, how we feel, that is a judgment call; it is going to be different for everyone. But living in kindness doesn’t make us a better Christian, Hindu, Agnostic, Jew, Buddhist, Catholic, etc. It makes us a kind soul — end of story. So for the sake of peace (inward, outward) — higher thought and greater consciousness — perhaps, it is time to stop worrying about how it looks and just do it. Stop the labels, the separations and the reasons on every level. Is it possible? The bottom line is this: no act of kindness ever goes unnoticed, ever. And in my experience, that is how “spirituality in action” works. a Debbie Lynn Laughlin is a Mother, Grandmother, Artist, Writer, Dancer, Yogi, Seeker of the Soul. She realized at a very young age that the outer reality was a far cry from her inner truth, and meeting her inner wisdom head on always turned into a challenge. The wonderment, curiosity and hypocrisy of life led to exploration and a cumulative documentation (art and journaling) of what she sees, feels and observes. Debbie writes and speaks to the logical side of Spirituality (being accountable, responsible, and full engaged in life’s happenings). PUTTING SPIRITUALITY INTO ACTION manuscripts are plentiful. They are scattered throughout the centuries. Their seeds are constantly replanted in the minds of each generation. Our cultures, our languages keep alive core spiritual verities handed down, amplified, and redacted but always preserved in their essence. Before right and wrong Essence slipped into being Not going away The essence is goodness. It manifests as hope. It manifests as kindness. It manifests in its grandest and most mysterious way as love. As we become more of who we are, we have more to give. We read, we observe, we open our hearts a bit more when we learn our own strengths. We open our minds a bit more when we understand the rewards. The whole process may take a lifetime

or more. The beauty of opening the windows of our soul to this process is in the knowing of oneness. We become an open-ended chalice through which life loves to flow…just one more vessel to offer the flow of love to new generations. The challenge in each moment is to help others while respecting their spiritual integrity. Crystal clear moments Portraits for the wall of life Speeding hours stand still a Rev. Richard W. Spiritualizing your day by Jerry Buchmeier

These are some exercises I have found to be very helpful in spiritualizing my daily activities. Note that the word “God” is just the word that I’m used to. For yourself, please substitute whatever word suits your own purposes, soul journey, and comfort level. When you have a moment in the day   that does not require your full attention, ask God to be with you, and feel the signs of his/her presence. Then consider what you are about to focus on next. Request God’s help on that task. Open yourself and notice any response. Give thanks and proceed on your task. When you are intensely focusing on a   task and there is a short break, give thanks for this task and this break. Then allow yourself to feel grace and freedom, and continue joyfully with your task. As you prepare to sit down for a meal,   take the opportunity to give thanks for the abundance of food and other necessities in your life. As you give thanks, notice the glow around the food in response to your thanksgiving. Recognize also the divine presence that you feel. As you begin an activity that does not   require your entire focus, set an intention to use your effort for the highest physical and spiritual good of all. Energize that intention in a state of gratitude, allowing the energy to rise from your spiritual heart to the heart of God. Maintain this connection to God as you continue the activity. Before you allow yourself to go to sleep   at night, set your intention to be with God during the night. Invite God’s presence as you relax, and notice the deep stillness within your center. Let go and let God as

you fall asleep. When you awake in the morning, see if you can recall a contact with God during the night. Do this daily, and before long you will begin recalling such contacts. The vividness will increase with repeated experience, until each night has the potential to be a life-transforming event. When you begin an activity wherein   you are relating to other people, find your center in and around your heart. Open your heart to God, and feel God’s presence in your heart. Then connect to the heart of the other person or people, and proceed with your activity. Notice how God’s presence in your heart harmonizes your activities with other people. When you begin an activity related to   business, such as selling or buying, consider your opportunity a gift. Set an intention of thanksgiving and responding to this gift with appreciation towards the people you are interacting with. When you must wait for something,   perhaps your computer, or a long line of traffic, and you feel frustration building up within, notice the frustration and welcome it. Let the frustration be, and welcome God’s presence, as well. Notice the change in your perspective. When you are tired and irritable,   acknowledge this to yourself and to God. Allow yourself to feel these things. Find the peace beneath your tiredness and relax into that peace. Find God’s presence also in that peace. a Jerry Buchmeier is a psychotherapist, hypnotherapist, and channel practicing in Plymouth.
