Yoga: Chair Pose

Dear editor, Thanks for your interview with Asia Voight in the recent copy of The Edge (February 2014). I had the opportunity to interview her over 10 years ago – actually, I called her up and asked her out for coffee and it turned into an interview, and she was very gracious. Just now, I was reading through my notes and it served up some good memories from that meeting. I went into the interview fairly skeptical about her ability to communicate with animals, but became a believer over the hour or so spent together. She could not have possibly known of a deceased pet of mine, but assured me that “Teddy” was fine. Okay, you had me at naming him! I enjoy the range of topics in The Edge and kudos to you and your staff for its variety. All the best to you in 2014. — Michelle Gardner, Woodbury, MN Dear editor, Your magazine The Edge is a joy to see wherever I go because I believe in its messages; the past few years of creating a holistic lifestyle for myself have been lifechanging. Without your magazine, I wouldn’t know about most of the happenings around the Twin Cities that connect the most fundamental pieces of my life to other people, thus helping to weave our interconnectedness more tightly. — Mercedes Knapp, Minneapolis, MN

Yoga for YOU by Michelle Ploog

This month’s pose, Utkatasana (ooot-kah-tahsana) or Chair Pose, demands that our legs and booty be actively engaged. Chair pose challenges the body to become stronger. While holding the pose, we can feel a muscle burning sensation in our lower half that signals that the posture is working. It is within the challenge of holding the pose that our spiritual work is ignited. The fire in our quadriceps is the light guiding us toward inquiry. What comes up for you as you are facing a new challenge or uncomfortable feeling? Observing your reactions during a pose is a powerful tool for your spiritual growth. Once you have chosen a spiritual path, you know that spiritual growth and personal discovery can be uncomfortable. In fact, growth only happens outside our comfort zone. Luckily, as life throws challenges, rewards, trials and triumphs at us, we can choose to create ease throughout all of the experiences. Create awareness while you hold chair pose this month. Remove any stress attached to challenge and meet the process of growth with ease. Bring your feet about 4 inches apart. Toes point straight ahead and heels point straight back. It is important that your feet be as straight as possible. Take your tailbone and pubic bone down so that your low back is long and your tummy is engaged. Reach your arms straight out from your shoulders parallel

Eight myths about breathing by Deanna Reiter & Troy Stende Breathing is one of the most fundamental things we do in a day. We take it for granted that we do it right, yet something so obviously simple has many myths on what is right and wrong. The following are the top eight myths about breathing:

Qi Breathing seminar

1. I don’t need to think about how I breathe, because it’s automatic.

are in a predator-prey situation, but for the most part, they are relaxed and aware of their surroundings. In today’s society, the majority of people have restricted breathing patterns and carry chronic muscular, emotional and physical tension. Poor breathing patterns increase our already elevated stress levels and we need to retrain ourselves to breathe more fully and deeply.

Just because breathing is an involuntary process doesn’t mean it can’t be improved. The reality is that more than 90 percent of us are using less than 50 percent of our breathing capacity. We are inhaling shallowly, which does not fuel our blood and bodies with sufficient oxygen and energy. On the flip side, our exhalations release only a small amount of carbon dioxide, keeping toxins and wastes in our blood streams and organs. Shallow breathing has been linked with degenerative disease, poor quality of life and an early onset of death. 2. Breathing can’t improve how I feel.

Irregular, rapid breathing can intensify stress, anxiety, emotional distress, tension and poor posture. Due to higher levels of carbon dioxide in the body, fatigue and depression can also become chronic issues. 3. I would know if something was wrong with my breathing.

Most people don’t notice their breathing is compromised until 70 percent of the functioning capacity of their lungs is gone. Unless you do regular testing to see how long you can hold your breath or do regular breathing exercises that require you to inhale or exhale for a certain length of time, you may not realize any change in your breathing until it becomes a severe issue. 4. There are other health concerns I need to focus on before I should think about breathing.

Of all the self-help techniques available, breathing properly is one of the best ways you can improve emotional and physical health, decrease stress and minimize aging. Shortness of breath is the beginning spiral downward to aging, ill health, weakness and depression. Learning how to breathe better and actively remembering to do it is a great foundation to help with any other health concerns you may have. 5. Animals in the wild don’t need to learn how to breathe better and neither do I.

Animals in the wild do not maintain the same chronic stress levels that we do. They may have small bursts of “stress” when they

6. Breathing primarily into my chest is better than breathing through my belly.

Chest breathing does not shift the diaphragm, so your lungs will not have as much room to fill. Chest breathing also does not engage the lower part of the lungs, which has a much greater volume than the upper part of the lungs. Chest breathing also tends to increase the respiration rate because it involves a quicker and shallower breath. This means that oxygen levels (tidal volume) will be lower and there will be less time for carbon dioxide to leave the body. Chest breathing is associated with lightheadedness, heart palpitations, weakness, numbness, tingling, agitation and overall shortness of breath. People with issues such as PTSD, anxiety disorders or phobias will have many of their symptoms exacerbated if they are chest breathers. 7. Breathing through my mouth is better than breathing through my nose.

Long-term, chronic mouth breathing can be adverse to your health. It can lead to higher levels of inflammation and mucus, which can lead to asthma, bronchitis and other respiratory illnesses. Mouth breathing can lead to snoring and sleep apnea, which deprive the body of oxygen at night resulting in low energy levels and can possibly lead to cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes and cancer. Damage to the heart muscle, inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract, psoriasis, eczema and many other problems may occur because of mouth breathing at night. Breathing through the mouth during the day will further exacerbate health problems. It is recommended to breathe through the nose to warm and filter the air. Breathing through the nose also makes

the lungs work harder and more effectively as compared to breathing through the mouth. Breathing through the nose promotes effective nitric oxide utilization, which can help to kill microorganisms in the lungs and dilate (open) blood vessels and internal organs to allow more oxygen to enter. Overall, breathing through the nose can improve blood oxygenation by two times compared to mouth breathers. This can result in energizing the body. Nasal breathing can also calm the mind. Of course, if you are suffering from allergies or sinuses or any restriction of the nasal passages, breathing through the mouth is a perfectly acceptable alternative. But the benefits of nasal breathing and disadvantages of mouth breathing cannot be understated. 8. If I don’t breathe “right,” there’s nothing I can do to change that.

There are many different types of breathing exercises you can do to draw awareness to your breath and to begin breathing more deeply and fully. One of the breathing exercises we developed is called Qi Breathing, which will attune you to your natural breathing depth and internal energy and help you to increase both over time. It is designed to give you more energy, clarity and peace. To begin Qi Breathing:  State an intention for your breathing practice, such as to get energized or motivated, to be calmer or to be more focused.  Inhale and exhale deeply, yet quickly through the nose, so that your inhalations and exhalations are the same length of time, approximately one second each. Visualize the breath moving in a circle, up the back of the spine and down the front of the spine. This circular rhythm will help your Qi, or internal energy to circulate and increase rather than to remain stagnant in your body.  Incorporate a rocking movement with your breathing. On the exhalation, rock forward (toward your knees). On the inhalation, rock backward (upright). Make sure that your focus is on the inhalation and drawing in energy rather than on the exhalation.  Bring your awareness fully to the breath and maintain your focus there to allow your mind to quiet. This can bring you into a deeply peaceful and blissful state.  Continue for a total of three minutes for a shortened version of Qi Breathing. a Deanna Reiter, M.A., and Troy Stende are the developers of Qi Breathing. They will be teaching an amazing 30-minute version of Qi Breathing on April 26-27 at the Embassy Suites Hotel at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Bloomington, MN. Into the Mystery: Spiritual Memoir by Elizabeth Jarrett Andrew

Spiritual Memoir Retreat

Back when I was first learning to write memoir, my mentor, Larry Sutin, said offhandedly, “You really ought to read some spiritual memoir since you’re writing in that genre.” Spiritual memoir? I’d never heard of it, and now, apparently, I was writing one. So I devoured the books he handed me — Augustine, Teresa of Avila, Margery Kempe, Simone Weil, Thomas Merton, Henri Nouwen…all unbroken, wild rides through the Christian faith. Later I would widen my reading to include Sufic memoirs, Jewish, Buddhist, New Age, and memoirs by authors who would surely rebuke me for calling them “spiritual.” All these books pulsed with passion for meaning, truth and mystery. I discovered within them themes, structures and patterns of writing that mirrored my own. While each author’s experience of the spiritual was unique, the way these experiences emerged in writing was strikingly similar. Spiritual memoir writing has special pitfalls and pleasures. It is a form unto its own. Philip Zaleski, who edits the annual Best Spiritual Writing series, defines spiritual writing as “poetry or prose that deals with the bedrock of human existence — why we are here, where we are going and how we can comport ourselves with dignity along the way.” Spiritual memoir, then, is a genre in which one’s life is written with particular attention paid to the mysteries of that life. It uses the material of the past and present to ask: What is the source of my existence? What makes me tick? What gives me breath, or hope, or inspiration? Invariably, spiritual memoir places one’s life in relationship to something greater, whether that something be God or oneness or the earth or death. Unlike literary memoir, the purpose of writing spiritual memoir is only secondarily to create a well-crafted work. Spiritual memoirists write because we know that writing brings us nearer to an ineffable essence.

The Christine Center, a retreat center for spirituality and meditation in Central Wisconsin, will offer a retreat March 21-23 titled “Spiritual Memoir: Where Life Meets Mystery” with Elizabeth Jarrett Andrew. Memoir becomes spiritual with intention when we look for holiness within the details of our personal stories, when we open ourselves to transformation as we write, and when we consider crafting our stories to best engage an audience. In this retreat for writers of all levels, memoir will be explored as a way to make the inner journey manifest in a broader world. The writing process will be experienced as a framework for spiritual growth. Participants will discuss selected readings by contemporary memoirists from a variety of religious and secular backgrounds, generate material on topics such as early childhood, holy places, work, our bodies, crisis and doubt, and offer one another comments on their writing. Tuition is a sliding scale of $180-$230, plus meals and lodging. For more information and to register, visit the www.christinecenter.org, call 715.267.7507 or email christinecenter@tds.org.

Three qualities Three qualities make spiritual memoir unique. First, the writer of spiritual memoir works to uncover, probe and honor what is sacred within his or her own life story. In this sense, the heart of spiritual memoir is intensely private — an intimate conversation between oneself and a great mystery. In more traditional spiritual memoirs, this evidences itself when the author periodically veers from the story to sing

praises or address the sacred in prayer. We see a similar impulse in contemporary memoir, when authors raise ruthless questions, grapple with awe and suffering, and persistently attempt to describe the indescribable. However it manifests itself, in spiritual memoir the author’s engagement with mystery is always at the fore. Every spiritual memoir reaches into mystery, attempting to place a human life in a broader, sacred context. Our task as writers is to not shy from the unknown, but to interact with it — to stretch our hand forward into the abyss. This is the second distinguishing attribute of spiritual memoir: The writing itself becomes a means for spiritual growth. Often the writer stumbles on this strange occurrence mid-draft, suddenly discovering that writing can be an avenue for prayer, or a means of wrestling with angels, or a form of contemplation. Regardless, writing furthers our relationship with mystery, and this becomes a primary motivation. Many writers say that they write to discover what they think. The wiring of our brains is such that only the written word can bring clarity. Those who write spiritual memoir write to find out what we believe, or, more fundamentally, what we know to be sacred and true. When writers are open to learning and growing through the writing process, that

sense of discovery infuses itself into our words. Personal growth isn’t a selfish reason for writing; it’s essential for making effective stories. Robert Frost puts it this way: “No surprise for the writer, no surprise for the reader.” The reader latches onto our experience of vulnerability and risk, following our growth like a lead-rope. Which brings me to the third defining characteristic of spiritual memoir: The writer works to tell his or her story in such a way that the experience of the sacred is made available to the reader. This last piece is the literary challenge. It’s one thing to voice your story, and another to address an audience so others can receive the story’s gifts. When you take time to craft your writing, revising it, finding the thematic threads, developing scenes, smoothing over transitions and uncovering its inherent unity, you invite your readers into your world and help them experience what you’ve experienced. A well-crafted work welcomes readers in, takes their hats and coats, and gives a thorough tour of the house. The readers then feel enough at ease to dwell in the story for a while, and perhaps be changed by it. Live the questions What makes a good memoir is the search, not the resolution. It’s no coincidence that Rainer Maria Rilke, in Letters to a Young Poet, gave similar advice to a young poet who was erring “in words when they are meant to mean most delicate and almost inexpressible things”: “Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and to try to love the questions themselves like locked rooms and like books that are written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.” If we are able to reside within our questions, if we allow our memories to speak their mysteries, then the great Mystery breathes life into our story. a Elizabeth Jarrett Andrew is a well-known teacher at The Loft in Minneapolis and a spiritual director living in Minneapolis. Psychic Overload Hope for the reluctant, developing psychic by Melissa Hanson

There seems to be three classes of intuitives: those who don’t know it, those who make use of their abilities, and those who just want to make it go away. If you find yourself in the latter group — or you’re just learning about your intuitive gifts — you are likely frustrated, irritated, disturbed or downright terrified by the abilities that are working so hard to get your attention. You may be terrified by dreams that come true, traumatized by Spirit that won’t let you be, troubled by auras you don’t want to see, and more. Or you might be ready and willing, but unprepared, for the sometimes-debilitating experiences that occur during development. Don’t sweat it; there is a prescription for the psychic abilities that ail you. Like a giant checkered flag that says, “Hey, pay attention, you’re psychic,” overload is a transition phase aimed at sparking awareness. It is not a permanent state, but the longer you avoid the writing on the wall, the stronger the overload will get until you take notice. There is another reason for your overload, too. There is a download in process in which your psychic equipment is being tuned up and tuned in to the appropriate channels. Remember old dial radios? Remember how finding your station invited that irksome white noise followed by deafeningly loud audio before finally settling on just the right position? Your psychic development is akin to this process. In time, you’ll find the right station. Using this analogy, an inordinate number of stations exist, and yours is intended just for you. Your psychic abilities are as unique as your fingerprints. Your abilities are unique, your frame of reference is unique, your style of learning is unique, your interests are unique, and so your development will be unique, as well. You might feel overcome with emotions of others. You might feel overwhelmed with the problems or situations of others. You might feel bombarded by Spirit communication or voices in your head. You might feel tired or headachy or agitated or depressed. You might be experiencing all of these — and more. Whatever the symptoms, the overarching theme with people experiencing psychic overload is that they just want to make it stop. If you want these psychic bombardments to cease, if you want to find peace, you’ve got to start using your abilities. As much as you might like to go back to life as usual, the nudging will continue until you begin to embrace your abilities and use them in a manner consistent with your soul’s mission. Here are a few practical ways to pacify your soul’s urge for psychic unfoldment:  Pay attention. Give up the head-in-the-sand technique. Rather than resorting to resistance, watch how your gift works, when it works and for whom. Understanding and acceptance will go a long way toward restoring the peace.  Find simple and anonymous ways to experiment with your abilities. Predict who will be the first person to walk into your office Monday morning. Try to guess what time your friend will call.  Research your abilities and interests. Read books, attend seminars, and seek advice from trusted sources. Knowledge is power.  Find a safe outlet for growth and practice. Work with a supportive friend or relative to experiment with your abilities. Better yet, seek out a development circle in your area. The more comfortable you become with your ability and the more you become adept at using it, the more you will find it blending with your everyday life. You needn’t suffer from your abilities. You just need to use them. a Melissa Hanson of La Crosse, Wisconsin, is self-mentored author, psychic, medium, spiritual teacher and angel-card reader. She holds monthly development circles and mentors intuitives learning to uncover, harness and hone their psychic abilities. An Interview with Gary R. Beaver

A life-changing process: Healing your sadness when a loved one (or pet) passes by Tim Miejan When our loved ones or pets pass away, we feel sad. Sometimes very sad. Sometimes incapacitatingly sad. For most of us, time is the only healer. The sadness fades over time and, eventually, the loss begins to affect us less in our everyday lives. We still miss our dearly departed, but their loss does not interfere with our ability to carry on. Licensed psychotherapists like Gary R. Beaver, M.A., L.P., an Eagan-based specialist who helps people recover from grief and trauma, see clients who don’t recover well from loss over time. Such people struggle day by day to keep their jobs while silently suffering their loss. Yes, there is talk therapy, but that only goes so far. And during the past 15 years, Beaver has found some positive results using EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprogramming), a psychotherapy that uses eye movements, sound and touch to help lessen the emotions of sadness and fear. Even that does not help everybody. Beaver began to take a much more active interest in understanding the dying process when his own mom suffered from a lengthy illness and passed away in 2012. He felt the pain of her loss deeply. But ten days after his mom’s passing, he experienced what he described as a spontaneous after-death communication, and almost instaneously his grief was gone. Beaver thrust himself headlong into a study of what had occurred. Eben Alexander’s best-selling book, Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon’s Journey into the Afterlife, had just been released, and Beaver devoured it. He attended a regional Afterlife Awareness Conference. And he scoured the web. Then he happened upon the work of Allan Botkin, Psy.D., a psychologist in suburban Chicago. Dr. Botkin modified EMDR and created a method that heals deep sadness associated with the loss of a loved one or pet, a treatment known as Induced After-Death Communication or IADC®. Some clients report having faceto-face interactions with their loved ones during treatment. Others see their passed loved ones in a happy state, sometimes surrounded by family and friends, on the Other Side. Almost all of them resolve their sadness and grief. When Beaver discovered Dr. Botkin’s work just by browsing the internet, a bright light turned on inside of his mind. “I went home,” he said, “and I said to my wife, ‘I found it. I found what I am going to

12

www.edgemagazine.net

What’s the ultimate goal of Induced AfterDeath Communication for these people? GRB: Two things: the first is to clear the

person’s sadness or at least greatly reduce it, and then for them to have an experience that most people interpret as being an authentic communication with their deceased loved one. This is a direct experience they have. I am not a psychic, I’m not a medium. My job is simply to help bring about the conditions under which IADC can occur. We’re not making it happen. We’re creating a condition where it can happen. And sadness will block it, so we have to clear the sadness significantly before it will happen.

I understand that IADC is a 90-minute session on two consecutive days. What happens during the process? You begin by working to clear the core emotions? GRB: Yes. Generally we’re talking about

Gary R. Beaver will present a free informational session on Induced After-Death Communication from 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday, March 20, at Aslan Institute, 4141 Old Sibley Memorial Highway, Eagan.

do!’ And within days I had scheduled the training with Dr. Botkin.” Beaver is now one of about 400 people who have been trained worldwide to help others with Induced After-Death Communication. In the Twin Cities, Dr. Kathy Heuser with The Alternative Wellness Resources in Burnsville also is trained in IADC. As a result of follow-up training Beaver received from Dr. Botkin this past month, he is only one of five people trained to teach IADC to other healing professionals, and he now sits on the international board overseeing the modality. He spoke with The Edge about Induced After-Death Communication and how it can help resolve deep sadness and grief. For whom is IADC targeted as a therapy? Gary R. Beaver: It is for people who are

suffering from prolonged grief and trauma. It will work in cases where the grief isn’t severe, but most of the people who are going to be seeking it out and who really are going to benefit from it are people who are stuck in their grief and are not able to get out of it. It also could work for people who haven’t been able to grieve. But in order for it to work, a person needs to be able to access their sadness about a person or pet who has passed away.

sadness, and sometimes some fear may come in. We use the core-focused EMDR to clear that. We have the client focus on the saddest aspect of the memory, and then once that drops, we go to the next saddest thing, and we just keep doing that until the person says, “Gee, I’m really not able to bring up any sadness now.” Usually at that point they will be saying things like, “I feel peaceful. I feel calm.” Then they are in a state when they could have an IADC. Most often, it takes much of the first day to clear the sadness. Clients are asked to pay attention to any sadness that may come up after the first day. On the second day, we process the remaining sadness until it’s pretty much gone. Then the formal induction can occur. I help them formulate some meaningful questions or statements that they would like to say to their loved one, and then it’s a matter of just doing the eye movements without any specific instructions. They try to keep their mind as clear as possible, clear of chatter, clear of expectations, anything like that, to let the experience happen.

Do most people who know about this process go into it really wanting that personal connection with a loved one? GRB: Yes, desperately usually. Most of the

people who come to a therapist for this are going to be feeling stuck in their grieving process. Now, this is something that really can’t be done until six months after the loss, and in some cases it may need to be longer than that if it has been a complicated

experience, such as the loss of a child. Six months may not be enough, and a year can be a little bit iffy. These people are still grieving intensely. Even six months to a year or more after the loss, their lives are far from being back to normal. They’re stuck in their grief, and miserable. Will you give us a couple case studies where IADC was particularly effective in helping clients? GRB: Yes, I had one client whose

sister had been murdered many years earlier, and he was still very sad about that and felt very guilty about it. We cleared his sadness, and that process actually went into the second day a little bit. Then I began the IADC part. During this process, clients follow my hand with their eyes. The instructions are to close their eyes after I stop the hand movements and keep them closed for about 10 to 15 seconds. If nothing happens, then they can go ahead and open their eyes. For this particular guy, we had done a number of sets and he just kept saying, “Nothing, nothing, nothing’s happening.” And then he closed his eyes and tears just started streaming down his face, so I knew something significant was going on. He probably had his eyes closed for about four minutes. He said that his sister had come up to him. I don’t believe he saw anything or heard anything, but he experienced a very vivid sensation of her taking his face in her hands, stroking his face, and then pulling him in for a full embrace.

It was more of a feeling experience. GRB: Yes. Totally tactile. And,

it was so healing for him. I had been working with this client for a while. He did not come to me for this. He didn’t even know I did this, and I recommended it to him after hearing about his sister’s death and seeing how sad he was about that — and how unresolved it was. I had never seen him smile in the probably six or seven sessions that I had done with him — until that day.

There was just a lightness about him afterwards. After he left the session, another therapist in the clinic (Aslan Institute in Eagan) came down the hall and popped in my office and said, “Boy did you make him happy.” I said, “Oh, was he smiling?” He said, “All the way down the hall. What did you do, tell him your very best joke?” Just to think of this guy smiling like that was just amazing. I had another client who was one of the most depressed people I had ever worked with. He had a very, very low selfesteem. He felt he had done nothing but fail in his life. About 30 years earlier his mother had died. He was a client who did not come to me for IADC, and he didn’t know I did it. He never would show any emotion. One day when he was talking about his mother’s death, I noticed he started to tear up a little bit. So, I told him about this method and suggested it. He said, “Well, I don’t think it will help. I don’t think anything can help me, but if you want to try it, then I’ll try it.” On the first session when we were clearing his sadness, it was the most intense session I’ve ever experienced in 23 years as a therapist. He was sobbing so hard he could barely continue the process, and at the end he said he felt better than he could ever remember feeling. On the next day, he said he felt better still, and he had a really good session that second day, and felt even better at the end of that. He came back two weeks later and said, “I don’t know how to explain this, but I feel great. I almost canceled today’s session because I don’t really have anything to talk about anymore, and I think I’ll just take a break from therapy and if I need to come back I’ll give you a call.” And he said, “It’s a different life and everybody who knows me is just asking me what happened, what happened?” I had never seen anything like that happen before. I would not have thought that two sessions — and it was pretty much that first session — could get rid of that kind of depression. Sadness continued on page 14  March 2014   the edge

 Sadness continued from page 13 Did he have any connection with his mom during the two days? GRB: Yes, that second day he definitely did have communication

with her. Part of it was her showing him all of these experiences that he had had with her. He had felt very guilty because he basically ignored her at the time she was dying. Then during the session he had this realization, one after another, of all of the experiences where he had been there for her.

So how did you feel, particularly in these two cases? As a therapist, it must be quite rewarding for you. GRB: It’s incredibly rewarding. When I first started doing this, I

was having trouble not crying because it was just so incredible, so moving, and it’s such an intimate experience. I’ll tell you about another case I had that was really powerful. A woman whose husband had died a year earlier was stuck. She said she had been a very bubbly, fun-loving kind of person before he died. When I saw her, she was not working. She wasn’t really doing much of anything. She was very isolated and was just totally focused on having lost her husband and being sad about that. My two sessions were pretty much textbook as far as working the way it’s supposed to, and at the end she reported feeling really good. She felt like her grief had lifted and that she could still feel his presence in her life. I followed up with her about three months later and she said her life had turned around. She said, “I’m really overdoing it. I’m working two jobs, I’m involved in all these activities and stuff, so I need to cut back some, because I’m stretching myself too thin.”

Are these permanent changes? GRB: Yes. That’s what all of the indications are. Dr. Botkin, in fact,

just conducted a study and it’s going to be published soon in the Journal of Near Death Studies. It’s an analysis of 71 of his cases, before and after, showing how tremendous benefits were still continuing six months later.

Other than EMDR, what’s being done for people who are in that severe state of grieving if they don’t follow these routes? GRB: For many people it’s going to be talk therapy or a medication

that they’re going to be prescribed. There are other therapies that can help, but I don’t think they offer permanent results. Dr. Raymond Moody adapted a procedure from the ancient Greeks called psychomanteum, or mirror gazing. He puts people in a darkened room and has them look at the mirror, and in the forward to Dr. Botkin’s book, Induced After-Death Communication: A New Therapy for Healing Grief and Trauma, I think he says it works pretty effectively. Spontaneous induced after-death communications, like I had, are really pretty common. Recent survey research indicates that about 35 percent of people who have lost loved ones report having some kind of communication with them after that. Sometimes those are very healing and sometimes they’re not.

Is your goal to make it more known that this is available for people? GRB: Very much so. I really feel a need to educate people. ...So

many people can be helped, and so few people know about it worldwide. I have been doing everything I can to try to educate people that this exists and what it is and what it can do. Every other month I offer free informational sessions about Induced After-Death Communication. a

Breath: A mirror of your life An interview with Terri Peterson by Theresa Nygard

“Fifteen years ago, I wasn’t into any of this spirituality stuff and had no idea that I was stuck,” said Terri Peterson, SBF, TBF, RPh, who has been teaching Soul Breathing™ for almost five years now and is loving it. “Life is a journey, and Soul Breathing has pushed me to the next level. Breathwork has allowed me to trust myself and know that I can accomplish whatever I want to achieve.” Peterson studied Soul Breathing with Robert Winn, Transformational Breath® with Dr. Judith Kravitz, and Arhatic Yoga®/Pranic Healing® with the late Grand Master Choa Kok Sui. She uniquely combines science and spirituality by blending her work as a Breath Facilitator and teacher, along with her work as a Pranic Healer and her profession as a Registered Pharmacist. You create profound shifts in your mental and emotional states. Breath activates your natural healing and intuitive abilities and draws in vitality. As you open up and release your restrictive breathing patterns, you release your self-imposed limitations, and you can also open to the spiritual dimensions more easily.” She said your breath is a mirror of your life. If your breath is full, that’s how your life becomes. If your breath is partial, your life will reflect that sense of limitation. Peterson said she used to hold her breath when she felt stress or worry. “That became my metaphor for how I lived my life. My breath revealed to me that I was holding myself back in life. As I changed my breath, I was literally able to change this pattern, expand my consciousness, and start living my soul’s purpose.” Many of her students have experienced encounters from the other side during a breath session. As their vibration shifts, they find that they are able to access higher states of conscious awareness. Many have had an angelic encounter or received a message from a loved one who has crossed over. “Recently a woman who had lost her husband was able to feel him come in during her session and hold her,” Peterson said. “She instantly knew things would be okay. Ancient technologies balance our future Using the energy science of BioGeometry by Carrigan Curtis When a jet plane crashes and the authorities are trying to make sense of what went wrong, the first thing that they look for is the flight data recorder or “black box,” a highly protected recording device that replays information from the flight crew to see what might have gone wrong and prevent it from happening again. Similarly, we all have our own internal black box containing our past records. Whether we are aware of this or not, most of our choices are a result of either positive or negative experiences from our past. Today, the world’s black box is being replayed. The current electromagnetic overload on Earth is closely tied to a period of time, even before our modern notion of ancient history. Once again, the abuse of energetic power and our loss of true spiritual connection are in the forefront of consciousness.

A Golden Age Before the majority of our ancient relatives fell for the illusion of material power over Divine love, we experienced a Golden Age, a time when we recognized and lived by the laws of Divine Spirit. The black box of our past contains clues to help us expand our awareness and move forward. Many of the lost secrets have become available to us again. The missing link between science and spirituality is rapidly being reconnected, and energy sciences like BioGeometry are giving us new hope that we can re-harmonize ourselves to the natural world while still using the benefits of modern technology. BioGeometry, developed by Dr. Ibrahim

Science of BioGeometry Carrigan Curtis will present her next workshop on the science of BioGeometry from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, March 1, at Living Waters Cafe and Market, 12201 Minnetonka Blvd., Minnetonka. For more info, visit HealingxDesign.com

Karim, is a patented science that provides methods for energetic balancing and protection. Today our world is being bombarded constantly by electromagnetic radiation. This electro-smog puts both our physical immune system and our spiritual bodies on constant alert to stay protected. The science of BioGeometry provides methods to balance the detrimental energies of daily life, achieving harmony within our physical and subtle bodies and enabling us to become more of who we truly are. BioGeometry is a true holistic science with no limits to what it can be applied to. Elements of this science can be found throughout the natural world in something as simple as a bird’s nest and as grand as the Great Pyramid in Egypt. There was a time in my life when I found myself unable to function normally in my personal and work life. The only time I felt comfortable was when I was barefoot outside or lying down on the Earth with nothing between me and the ground but a towel. The electromagnetic world had overcome my immune system, my ability to effectively put in a full day of work, and it had clouded my emotions so that I was unaware of what I truly felt. Through BioGeometry, I came to realize that my own home, a place where I had thought I was safe and secure, was actually acting as a battleground of unseen energies. I happened to be right in the middle.

 Breath continued from page 14 glimpses of a past life. In a recent workshop, one person saw himself as a Native American wearing a white headdress that draped to the ground. Another remembered a drowning experience and was able to release her fear of water. Each person’s experience is unique and since breath is the movement of Spirit in and through the body, it gives you exactly what you need.” Some breathing modalities can take you out of your physical body, but Soul Breathing actually brings you and your spiritual self into your body, Peterson said. “Many people forget that our bodies are important and allow us to do incredible things,” she said. “Being fully present in your body allows you to feel your spiritual connection and live from the level of your soul all the time. This helps you stay balanced and centered

BioGeometry taught me that there is a system of grid lines encircling the Earth, similar to the meridians that transfer energetic information through our physical bodies. These grid lines carry energetic information across the Earth and interact with everything they encounter. Unfortunately, in modern times these grids have become increasingly polluted with detrimental electromagnetic radiation. Toxic Grid Lines By understanding these grid lines, I realized that my home office, my bed and my seat at the dining table were all on one of these toxic grid lines. Every day I was spending hours absorbing all the toxic energy that was flowing through this line. Over time, this line impregnated my body with toxic energy, weakening my immune system and rendering me ineffective in daily life. With BioGeometry, I began to balance the grid lines by transmuting the energy, or turning the detrimental energy to beneficial. BioGeometry provided me with tools that use shape, motion, sound and color to harmonize the detrimental energies around us and, thus, transmute them. By restoring harmony and balance in my home, my immune system began to operate normally and my business responded by blossoming. When I removed the pressure that toxic energies exerted over me, I was given the opportunity to flourish, the way we once did at the height of the Golden Age. We can recreate a modern age of gold. This transformation starts within each of us; for me, BioGeometry has been one of the many gifts from Spirit to help put all the pieces back together. The black box has been opened. Are you ready to listen to its message? a Carrigan Curtis is the owner of a Residential Home Design/Build Company and a Practitioner of BioGeometry at Healing By Design, Inc. THE OTHER SIDE THE OTHER SIDE THE OTHER SIDE THE OTHER SIDE THE OTHER SIDE THE OTHER SIDE THE OTHER SIDE

Learning about life the hard way by Jaci Loos

One cool February evening when I was 18, I went out on a double date. The evening was cool, so I wore a sweater, my fringed suede jacket and a six-foot long scarf to keep warm. We went go-carting, and I was having fun and, being competitive, I was enjoying my half-lap lead. But my fringe was getting caught in the engine, so I removed my jacket for our next set of laps. While waiting in line to pay, I heard a voice say, “Don’t go on!” I didn’t want to hold up the line, so I decided to go ahead anyway. When I jumped into my favorite go-cart, it wouldn’t go. I got into another, but after 20 feet it stopped, and I heard that voice again. It told me to button my top button! I was annoyed at this extra delay (my friends were now way ahead), so I told the voice that I wouldn’t freeze and to just let me go! After 1-1/2 laps, my scarf flew out and started flapping behind me. I tried to catch it, but it got caught in the engine and yanked me right out of the cart. I was choking, and my eyes were blurring and almost popping out of their sockets! All I could think at the moment was, “This doesn’t happen in real life. This only happens in the movies!” The reality of my situation sunk in when I realized I couldn’t breathe. I knew I couldn’t hold my breath very long, and I would probably die. As I lay there, listening to myself choke, I heard that voice again. This time it said, “You haven’t accomplished anything and it isn’t about anything you’ve been taught. It isn’t about getting married, going to college, having a career or having children. It isn’t about any of that.” All I could think at that moment was, “I am only 18! How much was I supposed to have accomplished by now?” I felt a rush of fear, because I really didn’t want to die before doing something meaningful in my life. How horrible would that be? Dying was the easy part. If I just shut my eyes and let go, it would be done. But I prayed for help, because I just couldn’t die without having accomplished something. Luckily, at that point, my scarf was cut from my neck and I could breathe again.

After the accident, I was left physically and mentally battered. I didn’t know what to do, but I knew I had to do something. At the time, I only knew one person who meditated; everyone else either attended Bible study or weren’t doing anything. I knew that I never again wanted to hear those words: “You have not accomplished anything.” I tried my friend’s meditation, but I was too hyper to sit still for that, and besides, staring at the wall was just too weird. About a year after the accident, I came home from work to find friends of my roommate visiting. I was in the kitchen. I couldn’t make out what they were saying, but I felt something that ignited a spark inside of me. It suddenly dawned upon me that that could be what the voice talked about. When the visitors spoke about their experience, I felt the truth of it, and I knew that was it! That moment started me on my journey of selfawareness. Like every journey, it has had its ups and downs. In the beginning, I was so worried that I would not find what the voice was talking about that it blinded me. Now, however, I don’t think the voice was telling me I was bad. It was simply telling me that there is more to life than what you hear, see and touch. I have worked hard during the last 40 years to be accomplished in many things. Not long ago, I realized that pursuing your own inner truth is how you accomplish things in your life. It’s just that simple. I found that healing addresses my inner truth. The more I heal, the more I know my truth. a

THE LIGHTENING TREE: A FINAL FAREWELL by Jim Olsen

As usual, Edna Olsen tucked into bed in West St. Paul, Minnesota, at around midnight on June 27, 1977. Soon afterward — at his regular bedtime — Edna’s husband Jim joined her, although not as usual, given that he died of a stroke the previous day. This, understandably, disrupted their normal cuddling mode. Fortunately — perhaps coincidentally, perhaps not — on that evening a dramatic thunderstorm altered the environment and its inhabitants in a significant way. Lightning from the storm flashed with particular violence. One bolt struck the black walnut tree just outside Edna’s bedroom window and disrupted her slumber. The drama of cracking thunder and the crashing of the descending walnut tree startled Edna. More amazing to Edna was the glowing ball of light now hovering over her body. At first unsettling, the glow persisted well beyond the crash, and soon Edna felt an unexpected sense of peace and comfort at its presence. Within a moment or two, the glow softened, yet remained perched above her bed — waiting, perhaps for some response. Finally, the glowing ball casually crossed the room, passed effortlessly and harmlessly through a window, and spirited off into the evening sky. Edna fell back to sleep. That evening, I slept in the basement bedroom of Edna’s home. I was present for a few days to comfort her and share in our mutual loss of Jim. While the thunderstorm and vivid lightning strike had jolted me awake, I did not leave bed until the next morning. Emerging from the basement, I was greeted by Edna at the top of the stairs. She was smiling and clearly interested in sharing something. As it turned out it was news of her dramatic nighttime interlude.

CAMPFIRE OF SOULS by Mindy Schulke

My daughter, talking too loudly in another room, awoke me from a dream. My eyes opened. What sifted into my consciousness was a faint awareness of my physical body lying in a bed. And yet, a part of me was still a participant in the dream. In this lucid dream, I was a sphere of intense light huddled with five or six others under a grayish night sky in a large clearing in the middle of a never-ending sea of birch trees. The others were also spheres of intense pure light. Together we formed a ring of brightness in the middle of the woods. The concept of a campfire entered my consciousness. My awake, physical self watched my soul partake in this campfire. But there was

“Come with me,” she insisted, leading me into the backyard and around to the side of the house where the walnut tree once stood. It was now lying on the ground and split neatly in two by the lightning bolt. After a moment of shocked silence, I said, “My goodness, were you lucky that it was the tree and not the house that was destroyed!” Surprisingly Edna responded, “We were never in danger, but I was indeed lucky.” She went on to recount the stunning episode of the ball of light in her room. “It was your father who came back, as the lightning, to comfort me and bid farewell in a most dramatic fashion. I can’t tell you how much peace this has brought to me. On his way out the window, I could finally say goodbye.” Over the ensuing days, Edna’s nephew Art, a talented craftsman, was granted the rights to the wood and removed tree halves from the property. Art carved segments of the lightening tree into bowls, walking sticks and other objects of utility and beauty. I was fortunate to be given three such bowls and a walking stick, which, to this day, I cherish as reminders of Jim, of his thoughtful and explosive return to bid Edna goodbye, and of his continuing presence in the wood and in life. For me, just touching these spirit-imbued objects is deeply spiritual. Thank goddess for the tree and lightning. In our family’s life, they united in a way that challenged the notion that an impermeable barrier separates the living from the dead. Consequently, I embrace the notion that love never really ends. Profound unions permeate borders of time and space in mysterious ways. A lightning strike is not always required to signal such unions, but it doesn’t hurt. a Jim Olsen is a nature mystic and author. no real fire. We souls were the campfire. Melded together, we were producing an unfathomably magnificent love. My awake, physical self was experiencing this love: a brilliant, unlimited, bottomless, all-encompassing love. This love swelled in me. This loved consumed and enraptured me. I thought, “Do not lose this feeling. Go back.” I closed my eyes and willed myself back to that clearing in the birch woods. I dismissed thought forms and my physical body. Timelessness engulfed me. Everything I was, am, and always will be melded back with my soul companions into that burning soul circle of love. a Mindy Schulke is a software engineer, mother and dog lover. THE OTHER SIDE THE OTHER SIDE THE OTHER SIDE THE OTHER SIDE THE OTHER SIDE THE OTHER SIDE THE OTHER SIDE

Break on through to the other side by Sage Lewis

Some things just stick. The date was May 6, 2000, and my then husband and I had spent the day frolicking in Madison, Wisconsin, where we were living at the time. On the way home, he asked me one question that would change my life. “Do we have any beer?” I hoped he had left the “good beer” alone, but once we got home I found that not only was his 12 pack of Coors gone, but my six pack of Blackened Voodoo was gone, too. I felt a combination of anger and relief. Somewhere in my spirit I could feel things shifting, and after 14 years of living with an alcoholic spouse, I was exhausted. “I’m heading to the liquor store.” I said with frustration. “Do you want me to go with you?” he asked. “No. I need to be alone.” I said, as I got in my red sports car and drove off. The night was memorable — crystal clear, balmy spring night with stars sparkling brightly. As I drove just a mile from our house, I questioned how long I could possibly stand to be in partnership like this. It was painful. Grabbing a six-pack of “good beer” from the store, I headed back to my car and put it on the passenger side floor. Making my way back home, I mused at the stunning night. The clear sky was palpable. As I neared the intersection, a police car crossed in front of me and I checked my speedometer — 32 miles per hour with a speed limit of 35. Whew! Continuing toward the intersection, the green light welcomed me to pass through, while at the same time, Great Spirit was about to throw in a twist. As I neared the middle of the intersection, an old Buick LeSabre came barreling through and turned in front of my car. My eyes connected deeply with the spirit of the other young, female driver, and I had one thought: “I’m going to die.” Time slowed to an inexplicable stillness, as a fast flip of my entire life flashed before my eyes, and peace washed over my entire being. The sound of smashing glass and crunching metal filled my ears, and my body felt completely numb. My car came to a halt in the middle of the intersection, and my spirit came to a halt about three feet above my body. Looking down, I saw myself from outside of my car, as I reached over to the passenger side to see if my husband was okay.

Then I remembered I was alone in the car. I felt confused. How could I be outside of the car and inside of the car at the same time? Where am I? Did I just die? Time slowed as my body, mind and spirit tried to figure out what was next. Smelling a caustic smell, I began to cough as I patted my body to see if I was still in it. I quickly leapt out of the car and looked back at the wreckage. I stood alone in the middle of the intersection, with a stunned look on my face. Within moments, the cop (who had just gone through the intersection) was asking me if I was okay. “I think so,” I replied. But I felt different. Something had shifted inside of me, and outside of me, but I didn’t know what yet. “Call my husband.” But I couldn’t remember my phone number. The doctors told me that low-impact accidents could be far more harmful than high impact. With low impact, the body gets thrown around but nothing breaks, bursts or dies. For me, there was a part of me that died that day — the wife who was living with an alcoholic husband. Things haven’t been the same for me since that night. My spiritual practices have blossomed, and I have come to realize and understand that I am just a small part of what really happens around me. I was given another chance, and with that, I chose life. My marriage dissolved a few months after the accident, and he and I were able to maintain a sweet friendship for over 30 years. He died unexpectedly last spring. There are times when I stop to remember that night. Although the memories have faded a bit, what remains is the gratitude for the experience. I have looked death in the face more than once since that night, and because of that, I am able to look fear in the face with every breath I take. I am alive. a Sage Lewis is the Creature Teacher with Dancing Porcupine and is a Certified Life Coach, Shamanic Practitioner, Animal Communicator, Intuitive/Medium, Wedding and Funeral Officiant, Animal Hospice Consultant and Level 3 Certified Tellington TTouch® Practitioner. THE OTHER SIDE THE OTHER SIDE THE OTHER SIDE THE OTHER SIDE THE OTHER SIDE THE OTHER SIDE THE OTHER SIDE THE OTHER SIDE THE OTHER SIDE

A DECISION TO MAKE IN NEW YORK CITY by Rev. Richard W. Curney My old buddy Dave threw a poker party to help round out my funds for a “walk around the world.” I had hitchhiked out to Schenectady, New York, to spend a few days with Dave before taking the Greyhound bus down into “the Big Apple” in October 1975. The political karma was dense in New York that year, with the country’s biggest city in deep disrepair. The poker party’s outcome was predetermined. Eight or nine guys around the table shared a tacit agreement to keep my Scotch glass filled while letting me win all the big pots. By the time I was ushered aboard the bus, my backpack had a few hundred more U.S. dollars to go along with the German marks to get me across Europe. The New York Port Authority, at 5 a.m. on a misty autumn morning, looked and smelled unloved. I hailed a cab. My backpack and its 28-year-old soaked companion settled into the back seat. In those more felony prone days, a thick wire mesh separated the driver and his uncoddled back-seat passenger. The cabbie, driving with one hand, squealed out to the Van Wyke Expressway and headed toward the airport at 80 miles per hour. Fear never really made my list of automatic reactions. Panic was always supplanted by a backup plan. The cabbie changed all that. He was driving with an arm parked atop the front seat, weaving between cars and sheets of rain. I told him to slow down. I yelled at him to slow down. I shook the thick wire mesh and demanded he slow down. He just smiled. The world in the cab’s back seat began to change. As adrenaline found its way to my hair tips, time sped up. The inner doors, windows, seat, wire mesh and floorboard became projection screens upon which careening memories poured out of my eyes faster and faster. Every detail of my life appeared at warp speed in: the rain

hammering the windows; myriad variations of texture in the black-painted interior; and endless shades of shadow from street lamp reflections. Libraries of years filled the imperfections of worn thread in the cab’s back seat. The entire “life flashing before my eyes” process was probably a minute or two from onset to culmination. It ended when I looked up and saw we were about to crash into an old Chevy, maybe 20 feet in front of us, in the next half-second. The eternity of that half-second allowed me to assess the situation and reach the only logical conclusion: death. The wall clock said noon. I could move my head. I couldn’t move anything else. There were five or six tubes entering my body from various angles. My toes felt like they could almost wiggle. I didn’t know my name. I knew who I was and I was fine. Identity and history could be dealt with later after my toes wiggled. I closed my eyes and slept a few hours. When the sun was setting outside the one window in the old Bronx hospital room, I woke and turned my head to see a kindly looking New York cop with a graying Afro. Without a word, he picked up my backpack and showed me the embroidered name tag. I nodded a smile and closed my eyes. I now had my password to log back onto Richard Curney. The next 18 hours were déjà vu within déjà vu. Memories washed back through and into the dry stream bed of my consciousness. When the most concentrated self-actuating exercise of my life was over, I remembered what happened after the crash. There were no seat belts in the back of a New York cab in 1975. The impact thrust my well-toned body pate first, into the thick wire mesh. My spine buckled a bit and was severely bruised but not severed. The pain was beyond excruciating. The first memory after impact was hearing a loud noise coming from somewhere down FIRST TIME

below me to the right. I focused on the noise and realized it was a constant scream of pain pouring out of my body down below on the curb of the expressway. I was weightless and bodiless, hovering in gray, watching the same Afro-ed cop cradling my body. I felt like a flag waving in the gray. I was attached to the scream like a flag on a flagpole. If I let go, I would be pulled up and to my left into a swirling vortex composed of an ecstasy even greater than the bliss beyond description in which I was currently waving. I saw images — images of a little blonde toddler with a high forehead and another smaller child behind her and a sense of another child behind him. The temptation to let go and be carried into a reality beyond responsibilities, beyond doing anything and just being, being in eternal bliss beyond any earthen measure, was enormous. Decisions come in many forms. This was literally the biggest decision of my life, and it was crystal clear. I didn’t need help from the heavenly presence of a vortex. I had loved ones yet to be born awaiting me down below, and I directed my consciousness to them. Leah was born in 1980. She was the little blonde toddler with the high forehead. Matt was born in 1983 and Casey in 1994. Kashia is their older sister born in 1971. They continue to be the crystal clear focus of my life and love. It didn’t take long to get my legs back. I wore the back brace for a month or so until my back muscles were strong enough to keep me vertical. Karma gives us options. Instead of world travel, I came back to Minnesota and built a successful natural foods business. Another big bonus is having three amazing grandchildren to enjoy as they travel their new roads into the future. a Rev. Richard W. Southern-Style Collards with Bacon by Maggie Christopher Not only are greens nutrient dense, but they are also an excellent source of calcium. The bacon provides fat which helps the body absorb nutrients. Buy bacon from pastured pork, without nitrites. This is a delicious way to enjoy greens! Ingredients

3 bacon strips 6-7 cups collard greens 1 TBS bacon drippings or to taste 1 cup leeks or onions, thinly sliced Sea salt to taste Directions

1. In a large skillet, fry the bacon until crisp. Pour fat into a container to reserve. Wipe out pan. 2. Stack 4-5 leaves of collards, roll them into a thin strip. Slice crosswise into strips. 3. In a large skillet with a lid, bring water to a boil. Add the greens and cook on high heat, covered, for 8-10 minutes. Greens should be tender and a bright green. Use a slotted spoon to remove greens from liquid. 4. In skillet, heat 1 TBS bacon drippings over medium heat. Add leeks or onions and sauté for 5-8 minutes, until soft. Stir in collards to coat with leeks and bacon drippings. 5. Season with sea salt. Crumble the bacon onto hot greens. Serves 2 to 3. a Maggie Christopher, CHNC, LAMFT offers holistic nutrition therapy by exploring the root causes of your relationship with food, while at the same time introducing you to satisfying, delicious whole foods. March 2014   the edge

21

March horoscope: A sense of urgency like a lion. With the Sun in dreamy Pisces through the 20th, life feels more like a reality show than like reality. A sense of urgency kicks in when the Sun enters Aries, compelling us to take a stand and act with purpose.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)…People are lining up to collaborate with you and you can sense there’s big money to be made. But there’s that fear of one more person letting you down or taking advantage of your good nature. You can break that cycle this month; start by making amends with that younger you who learned that playing small and selling yourself short were prerequisites for love.

Aries (Mar. 21-Apr. 19)…Use the first three weeks of March to do two things. First, get real about what you really want from your relationship. Second, discover what payoff you get for playing the “victim of fate” role. You could have the power to move mountains once the Sun enters Aries. But the role-playing you can’t access this power; only the authentic you can.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)…A new relationship — or a fresh start in an old one — convinces you your dreams really could come true. To fulfill this promise, you’ll have to acknowledge how your fixed self-definition holds you back from the love and abundance you want. Redefine yourself and renew your enthusiasm by connecting with a higher purpose that nurtures your spirit.

Taurus (Apr. 20-May 20)…What do you see when you look down the road a few years? Is this future a vague wish or something you’ve already claimed as fact in your heart? Life supports you abundantly this month in restructuring your relationships and fortifying your mind so that achieving your goals is not a question of if but a matter of when.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)…You’re being challenged to acknowledge a pattern of self-abandonment. Make the connection between habitually denying your own needs, then rewarding yourself with energy-draining addictions. Once you see this clearly, you’ll find it much harder to keep betraying your soul. And you’ll reclaim the energy you need to create the life of your dreams.

Star Wisdom by DK Brainard

March comes in like a lamb and leaves

Gemini (May 21-June 20)…A new vision of what’s possible is percolating this month. But you’ve got to figure out which of your many dreams and desires mean the most to you. Think of it like looking through a book of art. Which of the pictures in the pages of your mind repeatedly show up clear and vibrant? That’s where you want to focus your energy. Cancer (June 21-July 22)…Jupiter returns to direct motion in your sign, pushing you to expand your self-concept and enlarge your sphere of influence. As you become aware of a restrictive belief that causes you to shrink when you could be growing, you come to a choice point. Will you wish things were different? Or will you make the firm decision that you are going to change that thought pattern?

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)…Someone who really gets you is giving you a glimpse of what it would feel like to be able to relax into total self-acceptance. Not the angry “I can deal” kind of acceptance, but the kind that comes from seeing the big picture and how seamlessly you fit into it. P.S. Your creativity is flowing like crazy now, and art is your path to wisdom. Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)…Your soul invites you to come home to yourself via an exceptional insight into what really happened in your family, and the lengths everyone went to in order to pretend it didn’t. What a relief to finally forgive yourself for all the things that were never your fault in the first place!

Of course, this atonement opens up your creative power in a huge way.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)…You can marshal so many reasons not to trust, but how much good has that done you? Sure you could get hurt again, but staying safely on the sidelines isn’t the point of life. So much love and abundance wants to enter your life in the next three months. Open your mind and your heart will follow. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)…You’ve learned so much about who you really are in the last month. You’re more self-possessed than you’ve been in ages. No surprise people are queuing up to spend time with you! Now it’s time to put your formidable intelligence to work creating the money or support you’ll need for the next logical step on your life’s journey. Pisces (Feb. 19-Mar. 20)…This is the month you finally allow yourself to wonder, “If I’m not enjoying it, why am I still doing it?” The Pisces New Moon on the 1st is revolutionary for you, urging you to set yourself free and take back ownership of your life. Your creativity is almost unlimited now. Stop using other people as an excuse for holding it back. Live in joy! a D.K. words of wisdom by Nadine Penny

Make beautiful music this March as you sign yourself up for those lessons you’ve longed to take but never found time for. Ring that bell, blow that horn or bang that drum and get inspired as you practice, improve and uncover that musical talent within. Of course, music isn’t just good for the mind; it’s therapeutic for the body and spirit, too! Research shows that music can lower blood pressure, decrease heart rate and reduce depression. Playing also hones memory, increases coordination and creates accomplishment and that’s music to our ears! So hit a high note this spring — and bow, pluck or sing! Nadine Penny attained her M.A. from the University of Denver in Counseling Psychology. Nadine lives in Minnetonka where she works as a medium, life issues reader and Reiki master.
