Advanced AcuEnergetics training coming to Hudson An acclaimed healing modality — AcuEnergetics® — is becoming known around the world for its amazing results, and it’s first practitioner training classes to be taught in America will be presented in April and May at Healing Waters Health Center in Hudson, Wisc. Developed in 2000 by Kevin Niv Farrow in Australia, AcuEnergetics (www. acuenergetics.com) is an energy healing modality with a unique and accurate approach to treatment of illness in the body. AcuEnergetics combines 40 years of Kevin’s research and understanding with knowledge from ancient Chinese, Middle Eastern, Indian and Judaic texts. The result is a modern treatment modality, backed by thousands of years of wisdom. Wide range
Using a detailed understanding of the body’s energetic physiology and anatomy and applying techniques exclusive to this modality, AcuEnergetics has successfully treated thousands of people for a wide range of conditions, including both physical and emotional complaints. “I’m really looking forward to coming to America and bringing the AcuEnergetics Level 3 and Practitioners Training from Sydney to Wisconsin,” Farrow says. “It’s great to see this modality spreading around the world and helping people in
so many different ways.’ Farrow says the treatments are successful because AcuEnergetics Practitioners understand that any pain or dysfunction in the body is in part due to a disruption in the body’s energy system. The treatment works by understanding the principle “restore flow, restore function.” If Practitioners can restore balance and flow to the energy in the body, the body can heal itself. It can be used alone or alongside traditional medical treatments. Some of the conditions AcuEnergetics has been successful treating include: chronic back and knee pain, sciatica, infertility, thyroid problems, headaches, chronic fatigue, depression, anxiety and panic attacks, insomnia, digestive problems, stress and trauma. It has also proven to be a powerful adjunct to post-operative care. AcuEnergetics is safe, non-invasive and effective in treating children also. In addition to treating specific problems, AcuEnergetics also offers a range of Wellness Balances, including energy liver flushing and energy lymphatic drainage. AcuEnergetics Wellness Balances promote general well-being and good health by increasing energy flow, reducing stress, improving circulation and strengthening the immune system. Three levels of AcuEnergetics will be taught at Healing Waters Health Center:

Roasted Baby Beet Arugula Salad with Lemon Feta Vinaigrette
There’s nothing quite like a plate of spring greens after the long cold winter months! They provide an uplifting energy and a natural detoxification that is in total alignment with the season. Arugula is one of my favorite greens, with its crisp texture and spicy, slightly bitter, peppery flavor. It’s related to broccoli and cabbage and is a cruciferous veggie that is wonderful raw in pesto and salads. If arugula is too spicy for your palate, feel free to blend it with other spring greens, such as spinach, frisée and radicchio. Our bodies are designed to naturally detoxify with the seasons and this recipe contains four essential detoxifiers: greens, beets, lemons and Himalayan Salt. Learn more about natural detoxification by checking out my Love Your Liver Detox at www.mysoundnutrition.com/specials.
Ingredients 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar 1/2 cup plus 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1/2 cup crumbled Feta cheese (about 4 ounces) 2 cups roughly torn bite-size pieces French bread 1/4 cup assorted chopped fresh herbs (such as parsley, basil, and rosemary) 1 garlic clove, minced 24 baby beets, trimmed, scrubbed (OR 4-6 large cut into eighths after roasting) 10 ounces baby arugula

Level 2 — April 15-19 — Inner Alchemy: Treating yourself and others, with John Peitzman. Level 3 — April 21 to May 9 — The Art & Science of Energy Healing, with Kevin Niv Farrow and John Peitzman. Practitioner Training — May 11-19 — with Kevin Niv Farrow and John Peitzman. In America
Peitzman, a native Minnesotan, knew after receiving training in AcuEnergetics that he wanted to help introduce the modality in the United States. After meeting with Denise Gunderson, founder of Healing Waters Health Center in Hudson, Peitzman arranged for the first AcuEnergetics training sessions to be taught in America. Level 1 attracted 37 students in December 2013, and in May 2014, another Level 1 and the first Level 2 training took place. No AcuEnergetics Practitioners currently practice in the U.S. Once trained in all four levels, students will have the opportunity to progress through the testing process to become certified AcuEnergetics Practitioners. “The excitement around this modality is expanding as more and more people are becoming interested in experiencing what this is all about,” Gunderson says. For additional details or reservations for AcuEnergetics training, email Denise Gunderson at denise@healingwatersqigong. com or call 715.381.8123. a cup oil in medium ovenproof skillet over medium heat. Add bread pieces; toss to coat. Add herbs and garlic; toss to coat. Sauté until bread is crisp, about 4 minutes. Using slotted spoon, transfer croutons to plate in single layer. Cool. 3. Add beets to same skillet, tossing to coat with any remaining herbs and oil. Cover skillet with foil and transfer to oven. Roast until beets are tender, about 45 minutes. Cool beets. 20th Anniversary: Celebrate Your Life Chicago event returns June 12-15 with Walsch, Redfield by Liz Dawn Exactly 20 years ago in 1995, three very significant spiritual projects were simultaneously and unknowingly being launched. These spiritual projects would profoundly impact the lives of all they touched and function as a significant part of ushering the world into a new era of spiritual consciousness. As fate would have it, the Universe not only conspired with these individuals to embark on executing their projects, but it also caused a synchronistic meeting between these three groups: My mother Ariel Wolfe and I began Mishka Productions, Neale Donald Walsch wrote Conversations with God, and James Redfield wrote The Celestine Prophecy. These three dynamic projects brought together these people not only in purpose, but in friendship. Thriving company
In 1995 my mother and I began creating events with the intention of raising global consciousness. We started in my mom’s dining room with just a telephone and a mission. We named the company Mishka Productions after our beautiful family dog that had passed away. What started out as a passion turned into a thriving company, and 20 years later we are producing some of the world’s most sought after events, attracting attendees from all corners of the globe. With my mother now in spirit, I can hear her giggling saying, “Who knew?” Two Jewish girls from New York moved to Arizona and created a company from her dining room and she would say, “We’ve come a long way baby!” Questions to God
In a quiet corner in Portland, Ore., a man named Neale Donald Walsch was at a very dark place in his life and felt a great deal of anger at the life he was dealt and, more specifically, with God. His life was very dissatisfying and unfulfilling. He was jobless, homeless and saw no way out of his current circumstances. As a simple method of catharsis, Neale began what he intended to be a journal using a legal pad and pen. Neale began furiously writing and started firing out some tough questions in his heart to God. As he wrote his questions, he realized that God was answering them, directly through his pen. Neale began to take notes 10 www.edgemagazine.net

Neale Donald Walsch
as God responded to his litany of questions. He started writing and couldn’t stop as the clarity and understanding of God’s words only seemed to improve, filling up many legal pads. With the words of God, the book Conversations with God, Book 1 was born. The result, far from the apocalyptic predictions or cultic eccentricities you might expect, God’s message to Neale was one of basic truth and honest wisdom in regards to how to live in a loving and spiritual manner. How could Neale Donald Walsch possibly know that this book would turn into something that would break publishing industry records by remaining on the New York Times bestseller list for nearly three years? How could Neale possibly know that this book would change the way people would see God and help deepen the world’s relationship with God? Neale has changed the lives of millions, yet this humble man had no idea when he began writing this letter of anger and upset to God that it would prove to be a catalyst to help heal so many people. Something special
In the same year of 1995 in Alabama, James Redfield, had just written a book and was selling and (on more occasions than he would like) giving his book away from his mobile office, i.e., the trunk of his car. He and his wife were doing all they could to get the book into as many hands as possible, as they knew there was something very special and transformational about this book. James Redfield and his wife Salle hit the road with their self-published paperback book entitled The Celestine Prophecy. This book was a fictional spiritual adventure story, and it was about to truly play its part in transforming the world. This book talked specifically about the power of coincidences and referred often to the popular word “synchronicity.” It discussed the dynamics of relationships between people and how energy works and flows through all things in the universe, and it taught the importance of paying attention to the synchronistic events in one’s own life. The Celestine Prophecy took the world by storm. Everyone was reading this book, and finally when a large publishing house took
James Redfield
it on, it soared to the No. 1 book on the New York Times bestseller list, again breaking publishing industry records. In the course of 12 months, these three spiritual projects had begun. James and Salle Redfield of The Celestine Prophecy spoke at the first spiritual event that Mishka Productions created, and Neale Donald Walsch was a featured speaker at one of its events in the months to follow. Spiritual renaissance
The question is, what was happening 20 years ago to inspire this spiritual renaissance? Do you remember what was happening in your very own life 20 years ago? These projects functioned as a spiritual wake-up call for the world, calling people to truly examine their lives. That begs the question, “What will the next 20 years bring?” This question will be addressed and answered at this year’s Celebrate Your Life Chicago 2015 at a panel discussion. The aforementioned panel discussion is just the beginning of an unforgettable event. At this extraordinary 20 year mark, Neale, James and I will open up this dialogue at our upcoming Celebrate Your Life event in Chicago. This year’s Celebrate Your Life event in Chicago features more than 22 compelling speakers with over 30 workshops, which offer you the chance to hear from industry leaders on a large variety of spiritual, holistic health and personal development topics. a Celebrate Your Life Chicago takes place June 12-15, featuring Neale Donald Walsch, James Redfield, Iyanla Vanzant, Caroline Myss, Dr. Joe Dispenza, Panache Desai and many other keynote speakers at this extraordinary event. For more information about the Celebrate Your Life conference in Chicago visit www. CelebrateYourLife.org or call 480.970.8543. Liz Dawn is the co-creator of Mishka Productions and Celebrate Your Life events. She and her mother started creating spiritual events in 1995 to uplift the consciousness of the planet one event at a time. Liz is married to Dr. Jeff Donahue, a holistic practitioner, and they reside in Scottsdale, Ariz. For further information about Liz and Celebrate Your Life events, visit www.CelebrateYourLife.org. Present moment empowers success with weight loss by Maggie Christopher If you think about it, life only happens in the present moment. Deciding to try something new or making a different choice can only happen in the “now” moment. I share this topic because something that derails many people when they want to change their food choices is, “I’ll start tomorrow.” If the changes you’re going to make are always in the future, you never actually make any changes. However, a question that you can ask in the moment is: “What can I do differently now to improve my health.” Sometimes, it is as simple as noticing that you’re comfortably satisfied so you choose to not eat more food than you need. Or, when you plate your food, you may choose a smaller portion. Notice that these actions only happen in the “now” moment. So why do so many people avoid the present moment? Often, it is their fear of being intimately aware of the choices they have made in their life. They may be so angry at themselves for gaining weight that they cannot tolerate their feelings in the “now” moment. Something to consider is that it’s exhausting to constantly distract yourself from the present moment, and it often leads to weight gain and poor health. In time, there can be peacefulness in allowing yourself to be fully in this moment. It can
be freeing. However, it takes in-the-moment courage to allow yourself to experience your current state of being. It’s been my experience that creating sustainable changes to the way you nourish yourself begins with being in the present moment. A strict diet often uses willpower for a certain period of time, but that usually comes to an end. Unfortunately, when most people stop their “diet,” they return to their familiar eating choices and patterns. However, when you get in touch with the present moment, you can notice and begin to heal the underlying causes of your need to soothe with food. Being in the “now” moment empowers you to make sustainable, long-lasting changes to your health. a Maggie Christopher, a Holistic Nutrition Counselor & Licensed Therapist, provides a safe environment to explore the emotional reasons for the eating habits that prevent you from reaching your health goals. She offers step-by-step guidance and delicious recipes which support you in introducing whole natural foods that promote health, calm cravings and allow you to feel satisfied. April Horoscope: Let Go Lunar Adventures
by Kathie Anderson April opens with an intense Full Moon Total Lunar Eclipse, on April 4, in the sign of relationships, Libra. This “Blood Moon,” the third of four total lunar eclipses in a row, could have you “seeing red,” with the Sun conjunct Uranus and Mercury in Aries, the sign of the Warrior. Just remember what Lao Tzu advises in the Tao Te Ching: “When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be. When I let go of what I have, I receive what I need.” Aries (Mar. 21-Apr. 19)…The focus is on a relationship, most likely with a female authority figure or a parent. You feel the need for independence and freedom, and desire to speak your Truth. Consequently, there could be a parting of the ways. Express your unique Self, and protect what you value, but remember that others’ beliefs are valuable, too. Taurus (Apr. 20-May 20)…You may experience a health crisis at the Full Moon. Now is the time to retrieve your Soul, and align it with your work. This would be the perfect time to go on a retreat, or simply go within, to be in solitude and digest your experiences. Journaling also would be healing, and help you to discover your life purpose. Gemini (May 21-June 20)…It’s possible that a romance and/or friendship could come to an end at the Full Moon, or you may access your creative genius and stand out from the crowd. Either way, use the event as inspiration to express your feelings, creatively, through some form of communication. Value yourself, and use your imagination. Cancer (June 21-July 22)…You may experience an emotional crisis at home with your mother or a caretaker. You may feel a sense of responsibility, but you may also desire emotional independence and space. Remember to nurture yourself, and have faith that everything will be all right. Your relationship is simply undergoing a transformation. Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)…Envision your future. Pay attention to your dreams and sudden flashes of insight, at the Full Moon, and then implement your visions in a practical way at the New Moon. A female teacher, a sister or even a neighbor could play a role in you returning to school to learn a new skill and transform your work in the world. Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)…At the Full Moon, you may experience a struggle between self-sufficiency and financial dependence. Stay focused on your hopes, wishes, dreams and aspirations when it comes to an investment. Jupiter is acting as a guardian angel behind the scenes, and will provide you with help when you need it. 12 www.edgemagazine.net
Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)…The foundation of who you are is undergoing a major transformation, and your sense of Self will be eclipsed at the Full Moon, due to either the end of a relationship in which you’ve lost yourself, or because you will be merging lives with another. The challenge is to be yourself within relationship. Stand in your power. Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)…Something hidden and related to unconscious behavior in your workplace may be revealed at the Full Moon. Pay attention to your dreams and mystical events for insights. Your unconscious behavior could have to do with the way you communicate. Expand your awareness, and grow as an authority figure. Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)…At the Full Moon, you have the opportunity to explore and expand the horizons of your mind and world. The bad news is that you may need to end a connection with a friend or group. The good news is that you will discover others who are more in alignment with your ethical values. Seek meaningful relationships. Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan.19)…You may find yourself at a crossroads, at the lunar eclipse. One path will lead you down an old, familiar road, while the other path challenges you to overcome obstacles to reach your highest potential. A partner can keep you company during your climb, and possibly offer you financial support. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)…It’s time to let go of past restrictions, and move beyond known borders. You may travel to another country, but this isn’t about simply sightseeing. You are about to embark on a journey that will transform you, as well as others. Focus on being of service. An opportunity will come from a fellow pilgrim. Pisces (Feb. 19-Mar. 20)…It’s time to do some spring cleaning, dear Pisces, in regard to groups you are associated with and your friends. You need to do some soul searching. Is anybody in your life controlling, or do you feel drained of energy after spending time with them? If yes, let them go. Raise your vibration by having fun! a Kathie Anderson, M.A., C.C.H.T., R.M.T., is a healer and a writer who guides others to reach their highest potential through her private practice, Lunar Adventures. She believes that each person has the power to heal her/himself, and that her role is simply to facilitate the process so that her clients can access their own inner wisdom. Beyond Kübler-Ross
The Sixth Stage of the Grieving Process by Gary R. Beaver The late, renowned psychiatrist Elizabeth KüblerRoss identified five stages of the grieving process: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and finally, acceptance. Psychotherapists around the world who are providing a therapy called Induced After Death Communication (IADC) are finding that there is actually a sixth stage possible. IADC was inadvertently discovered in 1995 by psychologist, Dr. Allan Botkin, while he was working with severely traumatized combat veterans at the Chicago-area VA Hospital. Dr. Botkin later wrote a book about his discovery, called Induced After Death Communication: A Miraculous Therapy for Grief and Loss. IADC is conducted in two sessions and employs a modified version of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), which is widely recognized as a highly effective treatment for psychological trauma and a variety of other conditions. In the first session, this streamlined form of EMDR is used to clear the person’s sadness. In the second session, the eye movements are continued to help create the conditions in which an afterdeath communication is likely to occur. During this second session, 75-80 percent of participants will have an experience that they nearly always consider to be an authentic after-death communication with a loved one. This is a direct communication between the living
person and their deceased loved one and, unlike mediumship, this process is neither mediated nor interpreted by the IADC therapist. The IADC process can heal prolonged grief and trauma to a degree that has never before been possible with any other form of grief therapy. As a result of the IADC process, the crushing, paralyzing sadness that can plague many people after a loved one’s death will have been eliminated, and that sadness often is replaced by a sense of deep peace and joy. This state goes far beyond Kübler-Ross’s acceptance stage and into what my friend and colleague Graham Maxey has called the sixth stage of grieving: an actual embracing of death. When a person arrives at this stage, he or she no longer finds death to be the unbearable separation from one’s loved one. Instead, the illusion of separation will have been shattered and the person will have realized that their loved one continues to exist and is still with them in a very real way. All indications are that these incredible benefits of IADC are enduring. a Gary R. Beaver, M.A., L.P., is a Licensed Psychologist who has been in practice since 1990. He completed Induced AfterDeath Communication (IADC) training with Dr. Allan L. Botkin, the discoverer of the technique. Through additional training with Dr. Botkin, he become a Certified IADC Trainer and was appointed to the International IADC Board. He has extensive training and experience in the use of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, which is the foundation of IADC. Actively Waiting — a simple process outside of the ego A Pleiadian Message
by Christine Day Beloved ones we greet you…. Strong forces enter your earth plane at this time. They are here to assist you in your transition in moving from this 3rd dimensional illusion to a 4th/5th dimensional perspective of Truth. With the prolonged magnetic shift taking place, coupled with the expanded Illumination waves coming onto your planet, an amazing opportunity exists for each one of you to disengage from the 3rd dimensional weaving that you have created in your lives over this lifetime. The increase in the magnetic flow on your planet is opening up the potential for you to reconnect to Truth. Each cell in your heart carries a transmitter, and these transmitters have been lying dormant until now. This magnetic flow is reactivating these transmitters within your heart center — and a rebirthing is taking place within you. As these transmitters in your heart begin to pulse, this pulse transmits out your unique divine frequency that is recognized throughout the Universe. This allows you to be able to naturally realign to and recognize Truth that has always existed within the 4th/5th dimensional states within. It’s as though you become a magnet — the 4th/5th dimensional light aligns you towards your divine frequency pulse. Time to disengage
You have been waiting for these specific energies that are designed to break down this weaving that has anchored you, held you to your 3rd dimensional illusions. Understand this weaving has held you in place in order for you to have your human experience. You were always meant to have woven this illusion around you. We are here to tell you that now is the time to disengage yourself from this webbing that you have created. You have completed the inherent need to have experiences of lack and struggle, of feeling small and insignificant within your world. This is your time to emerge beyond this restriction, moving into the light of fulfillment and creation. Now is the time to move beyond the 3rd dimensional illusion, to open into 4th/ 5th dimensional realms of Truth and understanding and to be taken a step further, beyond what you have known up to this point. Your ego mind has played its role of being the anchor, keeping you within this webbing of illusion. Your ego mind only understands the limitations of your 3rd dimensional experience and cannot begin to compre14 www.edgemagazine.net

The ego only knows how to keep you in a cycle of repetition in your life. It is essential that you begin to take back your power through conscious choice and come to operate through your heart. Your heart connection is your way home. It moves you beyond this illusion, beyond the webbing, to a place of unlimited potential, self-fulfillment and freedom to be the co-creator in your world. Your awakened state
We wish to show you how to distance yourself away from the illusion in your life and to alter your focus within the moment. This process is going to enable you to accelerate into your awakened state and allow you to create and birth a new weave of light through you life. Through these steps you will get to consciously co-create and anchor through your own 4th/5th dimensional flow that takes you further towards the sacred process of returning home. You are being asked to play your part by consciously opening up to the thoughts that bring you joy. By consciously focusing on these joyful desires, you naturally begin to open to your own creative energy that exists within your heart space. Know that as you do this, your ego mind will want to negate that which it does not understand, in other words, all the 4th/5th dimensional energies. The good news is that the ego mind does not play a role in the act of your creation. All creating is done through your sacred heart space, which is a 4th/5th dimensional space. By being willing to open to the essence of your joy, you really begin to align to your sacred flow of abundance, so the more you open to what brings you joy, the more you realign to your natural ability as co-creator.
Creation ripples
We will liken your heart space to a central pool’s smooth surface. You create ripples on your pool’s surface through opening to your heart’s desire, to the joy. Everything arises from your central place of this pool within your heart, so you begin to create within your heart that which you desire for your self now. As you begin to consciously open to your desires, creation ripples start going outwards across the surface of the pool and these ripples hold the creation frequencies from your heart’s creation energy. Now is the time to reconnect to your heart and begin your new path of creation through your heart’s desire. Don’t be afraid to dream and to allow the joy to build. You don’t need to know the details of “how” what you want will possibly manifest. Just connect with your joy, the image or picture of what it is that you desire for yourself and just let the joy build within you. You can no longer settle for the mundane within the routine of your life. You will find that taking a conscious choice step to change a small detail in your day-to-day will be powerfully impacting. You can alter just one aspect of how you do something or the order of when you do something. This conscious choice action by you is so significant, because it sends a message, a ripple within your 3rd dimensional weave. Just the fact that you are willing to create a change within your structured day begins to shift the 3rd dimensional illusion of restriction that is around you. A chain reaction
There is a natural breaking down of the weaving around you, which allows you to begin to emerge from that illusion. The smallest action of you creating change begins a chain reaction of shifting the dimensional energetic flow around you. You co-create an unraveling of this 3rd dimensional illusion that you have woven around you. No matter how stuck you feel in this illusion, you can choose to do things differently. One new step in your routine is enough. Remember, to create is part of your natural power and ability, a part of your birthright. Each time you choose to change and do one small detail differently, the wheel turns, and there is a shift within the hold of the ego anchor. It is the time for you to make simple changes in the way you do things and to realign back to your pure source energetic flow. Slow down
Another aspect of this process is for you to feel your self where you are right now. Stop and breathe, and feel yourself breathing. Slow down. Take a moment to be present with where you are now. Begin to notice and open up to what is around you and just stop and breathe. When you slow down and breathe, a further disengagement through
your 3rd dimensional webbing happens naturally. There is a frequency of aliveness surrounding you in each moment. As you stop, you can begin to access this energy that is present. Through this access you will be able to build this energy within you, to feel more alive. This is you beginning to play a more conscious active role in your life. There are many energetic forces here to support you in your transition of disengaging from this 3rd dimensional illusion. Your process is about remembering who you are and reconnecting to what you hold within you. This is how you begin to open into this new path on your journey. You have all made pre-agreements to open up to this support, and the energies present enable you to activate this help. Know that each one of you needs these alliances in order for you to take this next step of awakening. It is the time for an acceleration of your path. Call forth this help now. Remember, you must give permission to activate these preagreements. You have free will as a human being on this earth plane, so it is up to you to activate this pre-agreement. The process
The process is simple. You come into your heart center by holding your hands on your chest area. Bring your awareness to your hands, and feel the pressure, the warmth of your hands. Take a breath, like a soft wind into your heart. Breathe and let go. When you are ready, you announce your choice, to open the activation of your pre-agreement. That’s it, nothing else, simple. We are here to play our part within a Universal team working to support your evolution. Your transition is taking place on many dimensional levels within you as you choose this next step. This is your time to wake up and live!
The illumination energies are also supporting you in being able to move past the illusion, past the separation element that has been holding you in place for lifetimes. An aspect of the energetic changes coming onto the planet in April is going to create a unique occurrence within you. There will be activations within your heart that create a deep longing and desire to unite and share with others in a group setting. These illumination energies initiate a sacred design within your heart that will bring many of you into soul reconnections, and creating sacred community groups. This force of illumination energies will birth an unparalleled opportunity for communities to have a full multi-dimensional union. It will spark a sense of familiarity, a joyous celebration of the capacity brought to the community by individuals. A magnification of this unity will be experienced as the witnessing and acknowledgement of each other’s gifts is expressed. From the heart space will emerge a space of non-judgment and deep acceptance of differences — and a true celebration of these differences will take place. This is the time for community transformation. As your energy emerges within your group and expands through your collective creation frequencies, a natural uniting of individuals within your group will emerge. A sacred synergy will be birthed as your group energy grows in a force of creative light that will be held between all of you. Active waiting
Now is the time to begin this new movement of change within you, to allow an active waiting process to unfold. An “active waiting” is when you consciously choose not to find solutions through the ego mind — by not thinking what to do and how to solve a situation that has arisen in your life.
You consciously choose not to react to the promptings of the ego mind or to respond to the 3rd dimensional drama that is taking place. Your ego will say, “I need to do something immediately about this situation.” Actively waiting is opening up to your pure source connection through your heart and simply waiting for clarity, for understanding about the issue at hand. To wait for a simple, next-step direction to be revealed to you. Actively waiting trusts the higher aspect of your self to show you what is your next step. You wait to gain deeper insight into the situation and allow the higher aspect of your self to guide you. Actively waiting is letting go. On a 3rd dimension level, it may mean limited nonaction; on another level, as you align to your higher power, it may be the very highest action. You do absolutely nothing until the next step is revealed clearly to you through your heart space by your higher source energy. Yes, this is a different way of being, of letting go of the drama and moving yourself into alignment to this aspect of your higher all-knowing power. With each step you take along this new path, the 3rd dimensional anchors within your weaving unravel and dissolve. It is the time for you to consciously choose to live differently. We hold you in love and great appreciation for your journey. Blessings, The Pleiadians a Christine Day is a leading spiritual teacher, healer, channel and author. Tiny HOUSES A Conversation with Jay Shafer
Tiny house designer, pioneer shares insight on the growing tiny movement by Tim Miejan You’ve probably seen a tiny house on Facebook and reacted like most people, exclaiming, “That is so cool!” At just over 100 square feet, these tiny homes on wheels are taking the world by storm, providing a more efficient and simple living experience in stark contrast to the proliferation of 4,000-square-foot McMansions that are slowly replacing rural fields and adding to urban sprawl everywhere. For every person wanting to buy a huge home in this era of downsizing, there is another who wants to limit the amount of energy and resources used in daily life. And an increasing number of people are creating villages of tiny homes to assist those in need. Community First! Village in Austin, Texas, is a 27-acre community under development that will provide affordable, sustainable housing in the form of tiny homes to support the disabled and chronically homeless. Occupy Madison in Madison, Wisc., is creating OM Village filled with tiny houses for the homeless. In Portland, Ore., city leaders are creating tiny house villages to provide affordable housing for the working poor. 16 www.edgemagazine.net
Tiny house designer Jay Shafer Fifteen years ago, Bill and Brenda Campbell bought property just 10 minutes south of Mille Lacs Lake surrounded by the Mille Lacs Wildlife Preserve because they enjoy wildlife and nature, and they wanted to create a sanctuary that they could enjoy along with their friends and family. At that time, they had never heard of tiny houses. “Tiny houses were brought to our attention a few years ago by our friend, Deanna Reiter, who wanted one built for her on
our property,” said Brenda Campbell. “Our goal is to live in a community of openminded people, living simply and affordably by sharing skills and resources. We would like The Sanctuary to be a place for all walks of life. We will also have events about tiny house living, and a variety of other topics, in The Sanctuary Lodge.” On July 1-5, The Sanctuary will host a hands-on workshop to support those who want to learn all there is to know about building a tiny house and living in one. Jay Shafer, author of The Small House Book and founder of Four Lights tiny house Co. in Sebastopol, Calif. — credited as the father of the tiny house movement — will be on hand to share his expertise with tiny house design. In an interview with The Edge, Shafer said he is looking forward to learning how The Sanctuary’s plans to create a tiny house village in Minnesota are progressing. How many villages for tiny houses are there now? Jay Shafer: There are probably a few that
are under the radar now, because they are hard to make legal. You have to find loopholes or make zoning changes, and that can take some effort. The villages I know of are in Madison, Portland and outside of Austin. Those are ones that are calling themselves tiny house villages right now. And there are clusters of fairly small houses on the
Tiny House workshop coming to Minnesota Tiny house pioneer Jay Shafer, author of The Small House Book, will be one of four noted speakers who will participate July 1-5 in a five-day workshop on tiny houses at The Sanctuary Minnesota in rural Ogilvie near Mille Lacs Lake, an hour north of the Twin Cities. Participants will receive hands-on experience in building a tiny house on wheels using designs created by Shafer, as well as a comprehensive understanding of how to live tiny, how tiny houses are designed and constructed, and a discussion on myriad issues related to living on and off of the grid. The workship includes a primitive camp site, class materials, morning yoga, continental breakfast and buffet lunch daily, and a campfire each evening. Other noted presenters are: tiny house consultant B.A. Norrgard; construction professional Daniel Bell; and building scientist Mark Fallin. The event is hosted by Bill and Brenda Campbell of The Sanctuary Minnesota. A Gifford-style tiny house will be on site and available to tour. “We’ll be doing a hands-on build of a very small house, a tiny house, teaching people through that process how to build their own house,” Shafer said of the Minnesota workshop. “I’m really into the design part — designing efficiently — so I’ll talk on that, and we’ll all be talking about building, because that’s what people need to know to get started. “It’s a self-empowerment thing — like all peoples’ movements. tiny houses are a peoples’ movement as far as I’m concerned. “It’s about empowering other people, not dictating what other people should do. We’re inspiring other people by doing it. That seems to be very contagious. So overall, what we’ll be doing at the workshop in Minnesota is empowering people — giving them the knowledge to do their own thing.” For more information or to register, go to www.thesanctuaryminnesota.com/new-products-2/tinyhouse-build-workshop. a
efficient design and efficient living. If you use a loophole like putting your house on wheels — you don’t have to call it house, because you can call it a vehicle, RV or whatever — then the zoning officials say you can’t live in your trailer in this area or you can’t live in it in an RV park for more than so many months. Even in mobile home parks, you see restrictions on single-wide homes. They say it’s got to be a double wide, or a triple wide, which is the McMansion mentality. “Our goal is to live in a community of openminded people, living simply and affordably by sharing skills and resources.” — Bill and Brenda Campbell of The Sanctuary in Ogilvie, MN, hosts of the Tiny House Workshop
East Coast. One cool example is Trinity Park, which is an inspiration to me as far as villages of small houses go. It’s on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, and it’s pretty old, established in the late 1800s or early 1900s. In doing research for this interview, I learned that the challenge is finding places where tiny houses can be placed in communities, that zoning and restrictions actually make it difficult for people to own a tiny house? JS: Yeah, the rules that are particularly
difficult to work with are the minimum size standards. Officially, they are called habitability requirements within the building code, and those prohibit very, very small houses. They do allow for houses that are very small by American standards. You could build a home at 250 square feet and still meet those requirements, but it isn’t easy. The rules prohibit
So the reason for these laws was what — to encourage us to build bigger homes? JS: Yes, they were developed by the housing
industry and people in the insurance industry and a few other private entities that gain from it back when the housing market slumped and they decided, “Well, people aren’t buying many houses these days so at least every house could be bigger and we can make money.” That was the origin, and of course, that’s not the way it is stated in the code. The code refers to the safety and well-being of everybody — and that’s quite a stretch when you look at the facts and see what’s truly doing the environmental damage.
Not to mention the rise of suburban sprawl and its negative effect on nature. JS: I think most zoning departments and
their officials are trying to atone for the sins of their forefathers now, seeing that it hasn’t worked out so well. So a lot of folks are really onboard with the idea of tiny houses, but we’re really encumbered by our own laws. Tiny
Houses on page 18 April 2015 the edge 17
Tiny
Houses continued
What were your challenges there in terms of living more efficiently in Iowa City, where you grew up? JS: It was agreed that I could not live in my
vehicle, but I could camp out in it every night in my own backyard. So I bought a 350-square-foot house —very small by American standards — and then I camped out in the back for about five years. That was pretty much before the beginning of small house talk, or very much of it anyway. I remember hearing the woman in the zoning department explain, “Well, if we allow for this straight up, it might result in people making a bunch of small houses, like a village of them or something.” That was the mentality back then. And I was thinking to myself at the time, “Yeah! We should do that!”
Who created the first tiny house in the style that we’re seeing now? JS: I usually get credited for being “the
pioneer” of the small house movement, but nothing comes out of nothing. There is a book called Tiny Houses, by Lester R. Walker, and there were a few homes on wheels, but nothing quite like what I have done. I just took the idea and tried to make it look like a real house that people would want to live in and appreciate its merits. So I was their inspiration there, and I’ve seen pictures of tiny houses on wheels from way back when. I built the first of the cedar-clad, metalroofed, 12/12 pitch-on-wheels house.
How does your personal concept of tiny houses now compare with what it was 16 years ago? JS: It was very subversive back in the begin-
ning. I’m not exaggerating when I say that I expected my own tiny Waco, waiting for officials to come and kick me out of my home and me fighting them off. Fortunately, that was just a fantasy, it turns out, one I’m glad didn’t come to bear. Then, Google was barely in existence, and if you googled “tiny house,” you’d come up with 2,000-square-foot houses — 1,500 square foot maybe — and very few extremely small houses. In fact, the term “tiny house” wasn’t anything at all then. Now, google “tiny house” or “small house” and you see most of the houses that we are talking about right now.
What values are shared by those who are seriously interested in tiny houses? JS: There are a lot of different reasons
people do it, and it seems like they overlap, for the most part. Some people only do it because it’s affordable. You spend less on a small house, of course. Most people are into it for that reason, and for efficiency — efficient living. Other terms used in marketing
18 www.edgemagazine.net
today are “sustainable” and “green” — using less and getting more out of it. In nature, that is the way things are, but in our human culture, we got away from efficiency in the housing realm. And I would throw out the idea of living simply, which is becoming increasingly more popular. JS: Yeah, and when I use the broad concept
of efficiency I mean living simply, sustainably and not having to work your butt off to pay off a mortgage. The 2008 housing bust was a good example of how forcing people into more house than they want or need was not for the well-being of folks. We can even speak of efficiency with regard to aesthetics. A great composition in music or art or whatever is always one that is edited well. Every part of the composition is working for the whole. If you have a lot of extra space or parts that are not working for the function of a house and living in it happily, then I see it as ugly, because the composition just doesn’t work. In light of the housing bust, is there more desire on the part of homebuilders to build more of these tiny, efficient homes, or are people still wanting to buy 4,000-square-foot homes? JS: These tiny houses — 125 square footers
— I think are a subcultural thing. They certainly have not spread too far. But the extremes have helped to show folks how simple living can be. Instead of moving into 4,000 square feet, maybe they’ll move into 3,000 square feet. I think it’s very clear that most folks are going to live in houses much bigger than tiny houses, I think the movement has had an almost universal impact. What is being done with this concept in other countries? JS: These small houses seem to be most
popular in areas with very big houses. This movement is said to have started in the United States, but in Japan and some other places you couldn’t call it a movement, because it was always that way. So it makes sense that it would start in the U.S., and Australia’s really into it now. They apparently have the biggest houses in the world at this point. So there’s always a backlash to the overly large houses. People see the ramifications of being forced into too much house, so they choose to live in much smaller houses. I’m just speculating. But even in Japan, where houses have always been tiny, they are really into tiny houses right now. I was inspired by a trip to Tokyo, where I spent most of my time in my hotel room looking at how small the bathroom was and how cool it was. Japan is an outlier in terms of tiny houses existing only in big-house areas. I guess they have really begun to embrace the
philosophy and the concept of it. Saudi Arabia, where there are giant houses, is into it, too. I was asked to speak there due to their giant housing problem. That’s the most exotic thing I have done, going to Saudia Arabia to talk about tiny houses! What were the benefits you’ve received from living more simply in a tiny house, perhaps something that you didn’t expect? JS: The thing I did expect, which I got far
more of, was freedom to do the things I love doing instead of having to work for cash all the time. I guess I was surprised by how much of a chick magnet they are, and if you’re into guys, how much of a guy magnet they are. For me, I thought, “You know, I’m going to live like a recluse here maybe, but at least I’ll be happy living simply.” It turns out tiny houses are not really a turn-off to other people — anybody I’d want to hang around with anyway! You invite them over and they see your tiny house and are actually fascinated by it. I guess if they like your home it separates those you want to be around and those you don’t. JS: Yeah, and surprisingly, there are very few
people I’ve met who don’t get it and aren’t fascinated by it. The thing that has really surprised me is how it’s all taken off like it has. Before I built my first house, I was in the closet designing tiny houses. It was my secret way of not having to do all the stuff I didn’t want to do, like laundry or whatever. I never would have thought at that time that not only would it be accepted by our culture to be so OCD with such a hyper-efficient housing design, but it would be embraced by the media at large all over the world.
Why do you enjoy designing tiny houses? JS: For me, it’s pretty personal, because my
psychology is that I lack a sense of home. Focusing so much on boiled down, rarified archetypal homes, gives me that sense. Stewart Brand (best known as editor of the Whole Earth Catalog) in his book said that when people say I’m home, they could be using “home” as an adjective as well as a noun. When you say, “I’m home,” you could mean that you feel that way. That’s what I’m looking for when I work with tiny houses. Outside of that, designing tiny houses is just an addiction at this point. I can hardly stop doing it, because that efficient part is very fascinating. “How small could a bathtub be?” It seems like you can always find another inch to save. After all this time, I keep on finding ways to make things more efficient.
Can you go smaller than you’ve gone so far? JS: Yes, it all depends on where you want to
draw the line. Henry Thoreau would design and build something in which he would just survive. But I want my laptop and I want my fridge. So the efficiency of the design hinges on what you want to include. Paraphrasing Socrates, he who needs the least is the richest. I used to live in the back of my truck before I designed my first house, and that is much less than a quarter of the size of my house. You can always go smaller until you get to a certain point. For most people, that is when it starts to feel confining. I guess, ultimately, I’ll wind up in a coffinsized structure.
I guess some people who are claustrophobic might not appreciate the tiny house, so I guess it’s not for everybody. JS: Yeah, I’d say it’s not for everybody.
Secretly, I think a lot of people would be into living in less space than they think they could live in comfortably. It’s difficult to assess your needs. That takes a lot of time, especially when you live in a culture that exceeds your needs. I don’t know anybody living in a small house that doesn’t like it, unless they are forced into that situation. And usually if it feels crowded, it’s because it’s not designed well and/or it’s just not meeting that person’s needs. Maybe they need a pool table to feel happy. I’d put it outside and put a cover over it. Or you design the pool table in the house and maybe feel happy. You could sleep on it, I guess. JS: That just came to mind as we were
talking. That’s exactly the right answer. Sleep on the pool table. I’m actually claustrophobic myself. I get claustrophobic in spaces that feel confining. I’ve been in 4,000-squarefoot homes and have felt claustrophobic because I felt the design was bad or there was a bottleneck somewhere and it didn’t work. I get what I call social claustrophobia in an extremely crowded room. But then
again, I’m a claustrophile — I like very small spaces. It’s like Goldilocks — too big, too small, it’s got to be just right. What’s the greatest challenge in living in a tiny house? JS: As far as living in a tiny house according
to my own definition in which all of the space is being used efficiently, I guess the challenge is if you have a need one day that exceeds your size limitations, like you want to have a party with 40 of your friends. I would say just go to the Holiday Inn and rent a party room with the money you have saved not having a mortgage. I talk to a lot of tiny home people, and it doesn’t seem like there are many challenges. It is mostly liberating! How does temperature affect tiny homes? Can you live in one year-round in Minnesota where you could have cold weather for five or six months? JS: Actually, they work very well in adverse
climates. I lived in mine in Iowa, which is only about 10 degrees off of Minnesota. I found that I spent about a twelfth on heating compared to what other folks were spending, on average. It’s really easy to heat and cool a tiny space. You could turn it from a sauna into a refrigerator in about 20 minutes if you needed to. A lot of people go with a variety of sources for their heat, like propane or natural gas or wood.
For someone interested in tiny houses but who doesn’t know much about them, what do they cost and are they pre-made or do you need to invest time in learning how to make the home? JS: There are so many variables. You can
build a tiny house for almost nothing, in terms of money, if you’re willing to spend a gazillion hours digging through salvage yards using reclaimed materials. And if you wanted to buy everything new at a lumber yard to build a 120-square-foot house, it would only cost about $17,000 in materials — if you’re not going over the top like I tend to do. In my history, I’ve gotten the
most-expensive heater because it looks cool. You see a nice fire in it and it makes it feel cozy. I’m actually trying to design more affordable houses right now, because you can do a lot of really cool things with a lot less money. The most efficient thing tends to look best anyway. In other words, it really depends upon what kinds of materials and amenities you want. I’ve heard them costing upwards of $100,000 for something that size, which is an awful lot. That someone wanting to build with the finest wood. I’m now trying to aim for something with materials that costs only $10,000, or something a little smaller that is more efficient for only $4,000. You can buy tiny homes pre-made or you can build one yourself. All of the options are available today. What trend would you like to see take place for tiny houses? JS: I’m hoping the overarching trend of the
whole thing is that it’s not even a trend. McMansions were an unsustainable trend. They don’t fit well in the scheme of nature or human sustainability overall, and yet they were on the rise for a few decades. And there will always be McMansions. I don’t imagine that everyone will be living in 120 square footers. But I think the tiny house movement will be like it always has been in Japan. It’s just efficient design. It’s just good design, where you have taken out all of the unnecessary parts. It’s like buying a car. You don’t buy a car based on its square footage. You buy it for its quality. a

OUR F EATURED TOPIC : CLEARIN G TO X IC E M OTION S
Transmuting our emotional toxins: from swill to sweetwater Spirit Leaves
by Janet Michele Red Feather In Shakespeare’s Hamlet, there’s a revelatory scene wherein the tragic hero learns that his father, the King of Denmark, was murdered by his own brother, Claudius. The monarch was asleep on a garden bench when his brother stealthily crept in and poured a ewer of poison into the King’s ear. This harrowing scene reminds me of the very stealthy and invidious way toxic emotions, once unleashed on the psyche, pollute and destroy our inner peace. The antidote, surprisingly, lies within. By taking responsibility for our own feelings, we avoid going under in a riptide of poisonous emotions. I learned this the hard way. Recently, a beloved friend and, subsequently, a student of mine, suffered meltdowns in the same week; in both cases, I became caught in the direct line of fire and fell prey to the onslaught of negative emotions. My spirit was swept into a toxic undertow, the current whirling me into a rapidly descending maelstrom of negative thought. I manufactured an entire scenario, a list of ills both real and imagined. I chose to ignore them both. After all, I did not deserve such treatment. In this column lay my salvation. How could I write a credible article on clearing toxic emotions while my recalcitrant ego busily demanded a redress of grievances? Engaging meditation, prayer, sage, water, gemstones and salt, I cleared. Guidance came through in the form of dreams and signs. Everything pointed to one message: holding on was more destructive than letting go. The ego still acted up in righteousness: “You can’t let people abuse you. They won’t respect you. Some are jealous of you and wish to harm you.” Every effort of my petulant ego to cause turbulence met with higher guidance. The Red Feather Man has so often reminded me that, despite the negative intentions of others, “nothing has power but what we give it.” I learned that we must first recognize when we’re in the throes of ego-induced emotions, even as they arise — no easy feat. We want to lash out or hold a grudge against the person who has hurt us. Upon deeper inspection, though, we uncover the true culprit: it is the ego that feels slighted, recoiling within its salted wound. Often, the situation is compounded by Spirit

Befriending an unwanted feeling by Eric J. Christopher It feels almost instinctual as a human being to avoid a negative feeling. If something from the past doesn’t feel good, it’s quite common and understandable to distract yourself from it through any number of ways, such as using chemicals, overeating, overworking, etc. This may seem to help for a while, however, the act of avoidance keeps it locked in your body/ mind system, unconsciously influencing you in a limiting way. A key to releasing an unwanted emotion lies in the last place one would expect to find it…inside the negative feeling itself! Where would you look to find the unwanted past that has a grip on your underlying feelings and beliefs? Although the past no longer exists, it can have a strong, influential hold on us. The body is a good place to look, because it is a storehouse of old, outdated feelings that have not been given a chance to be fully articulated, expressed and/or processed. In a new paradigm, unwanted feelings will not be avoided, but instead viewed more as a small child nagging for attention so they can be liberated from your body/ mind system. As this happens, you become a freer human being…a clearer expression of your soul, rather than an expression of the fears from your past programming and conditioning. A negative feeling is simply a guidepost that informs us that we are out of alignment with our soul’s perspective, while a feeling of harmony and joy indicates we are in alignment with our soul’s purpose. These days there are an increasing amount of emotional healing methods, such as EFT, EMDR, Emotion Code, etc. The right fit varies among individuals. It’s important to note that healing is a process that happens in layers. A triggered emotion means you’re ready for the next layer to release. I often use a light trance method that is a combination of effective techniques. It’s a process that’s best done with a skilled guide who can keep your focus anchored in the present moment. When you permit a negative emotion to be your guide, it illuminates the unconscious beliefs it operates from, as well as where it originated. The key is to place your full attention into that negative emotion. As a result, the past is then reduced to a sensation in the body. The moment you fully feel it in the body, you have switched from thinking mode to feeling mode, and you’ve become anchored in the present moment. When anchored in the present moment, you can access the subconscious
mind, thus uncovering the unconscious beliefs that this emotion operates from, as well as allowing it to point toward any situations, events or circumstances that contributed to this feeling. With your will and intent, you can send the negative energy out of your body and recover the part of you that was lost when you took on that negative emotion. Here’s an example: A man came to me with debilitating anxiety. As he fine-tuned his focus on it, he could feel it most in his stomach. Often, I ask the client to give the feeling a voice. A dialogue creates a space for listening, understanding and resolution. After some questioning, it said, “I’m most afraid of making a mistake, and that means I’ll be judged and criticized, which means I won’t be loved, and I’ll be all alone.” These subconscious beliefs fueled the anxiety and locked it in place. Then, the anxiety guided his awareness to the situations early in his life that contributed to the feeling. They were most evident from a father who would not tolerate mistakes. These tense energies from early events had been trapped and replayed in his body for years, creating a pressure-cooker effect that exacerbated his anxiety. As he focused and felt the feelings from the past in his body, he could then release them from his body/mind system and bring in the part of himself that was covered up and lost when he took on the fear-based energy. As his body steeped in the lighter energies of freedom, strength and confidence, these positive emotions became more strongly embedded in his subconscious mind. Our negative feelings are not who we are, but who we are can observe, understand, release and heal them with intention. As long as we fear and avoid them, they will enslave us. But when we allow them to guide us to what wants to be acknowledged and no longer hidden within us, we can liberate these negative energies from our body/mind systems, enabling us to live from the true freedom that we are — and from which we can never really escape! a Eric Christopher has a Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy and is a Certified Regression Hypnotherapist. Eric’s life passion has been to help clients connect to their inner wisdom that can uncover and heal the roots of limiting fears and beliefs, thereby enabling them to experience the freedom, peace and clarity of their wise soul self. Love in a Bottle: flower essences for emotional spring cleaning by Kyra Mesich, Psy.D. Let’s all relax into a big grin and shout a collective “yippee!” that spring is finally here. The urge for spring cleaning is no coincidence. We all feel the surge of renewed life force, especially once we begin to see green again. Just like the animals, we feel the calling to prepare our nests and make our homes nice and tidy for the coming season. Except for us humans, “home” is much more than just the four walls where we live. Our home is our psyche, the place where we think and feel and try to make sense of our experiences. Our psyche needs spring cleaning just like all other aspects of our home. Without some occasional psyche maintenance, we can find ourselves feeling bogged down by old emotions, stymied by our own negative, limiting beliefs, or find ourselves making unconscious choices that we know darn well are not in our best interest. Luckily, there is a fabulous, beautiful tool from nature that fast tracks your mental and emotional spring cleaning: flower essence remedies! If you’ve read my previous articles about flower essences, bear with me while I remind everyone exactly what I’m talking about. Although the words sound similar, flower essences are not essential oils used in aromatherapy. They are energetic remedies in a class all their own, created only from the flowers of many different types of plants and trees. Each plant or tree blooms with a specific vibration that
lends support to the human who seeks balance and evolution. Hooray! To put it another way, there is a flower essence that can help you clear and heal just about any emotional, spiritual or energetic issue that may be holding you back. The following is a list of some flower essences you may want to look to for your own emotional spring cleaning. These are all essences from Flower Essence Services brand. Mountain Pennyroyal: Aids the person who has absorbed other’s negative thoughts or has been drained by their chaotic energy. This essence clarifies the mental body and leads to greater vitality with positive, clear thinking. Chaparral: Cleanses subconscious emotional toxins related to substance use or traumatic experiences. This essence is also broadly beneficial for all of us who have been subject to chaotic, violent and degrading images in our sometimes misguided modern entertainment and news. Sagebrush: This purifying essence specializes in transition and release. Sagebrush is especially supportive for those of us who are going or have gone through life upheaval (divorce, job loss, financial ruin, major illness). This essence helps us to: connect with our core, essential self; release what no longer serves our evolution; and move forward with a sense of deeper meaning and freedom. Honeysuckle: This essence is about release in a different way. It is helpful for those of us who have too much emotional Flower Essences on page 23

overlays from past lives, augmenting our pain exponentially. The higher self, however, understands that no one makes us feel bad; no one causes our misery. The ideas that surface in the mind in reaction to the tide pool of feelings are subject to our control. We can react by simply identifying the feeling, without attachment. We can say, “pain,” “humiliation,” “anger,” and just let go. Once we label the feeling, we defuse it. We take the wind out of its sails. Letting go is difficult, but the alternatives are worse. Certainly, we do not wish to harm ourselves or others. “But,” the ego insists, “there are toxic people in the world, and I need protection.” In time, we see that spiritual gains usually result from difficult situations. These present us with opportunities to realize that the true instigator is the mind, with its turbulent stirrings. So there it is. I was neither victim nor casualty, except perhaps of an internal war waged within myself. I began to accept that the student who unleashed her anger upon me, and the friend who launched an unprovoked attack upon me, both afforded occasions for my further enlightenment. In the midst of some peak human dramas, I had been blaming others for causing my negative emotions. Despite what is directed at me by others, I need not lose my own center or come undone. If I gaze out at the world through eyes of compassion, I will recognize the great suffering that must exist to cause people to behave in unpleasant ways. Instead of avoiding them, I embrace them. Love is stronger than any other force in the Universe, Cedric has taught me more than once. It diminishes defensive feelings. It bonds us to others. It fills us with compassion. We have no judgments, so there is nothing and no one to reject. At that point, we can embrace everyone and everything. a Janet Michele Red Feather, J.D., M.A., has taught literature and composition for 18 years at the university, state, tribal and community college levels. She made a career shift into teaching after serving nearly eight years as a defense litigator in California. The Wisdom Way to emotional freedom by Rev. Alan L. Pritz The curious thing about being human is the inherent complexity associated with Being. On one hand, we are mind-body creatures with fluid layers of history and emotional fabric that help inform the solidity of our existence. On a deeper level, we are composed of finer, yet more enduring, qualities than reactive thoughts and feelings; we are immutable components of consciousness, individualized aspects of Spirit that can be called soul. The former aspect is rife with vacillating ups and downs, a whirlwind melodrama of engagement patterns that typically define much of our emotional experiences, many of which are not necessarily desirable. The latter, or soul, part of us is free of negative states, yet it is consistently the part of us we least seek to access, much less hold onto, on a daily basis. From my perspective as a meditation teacher and spiritual facilitator and life coach, truth is essential in the quest for SelfRealization and, ultimately, a life well lived. But what this truth is and how we engage with it can make all the difference in how we show up emotionally every day — plus how resilient we become over time. Nature of emotions
Let’s first consider the nature of emotions. I define emotions as the subjective reaction to feelings. Feelings, in turn, are perceptual assessments of what the senses or thoughts detect. In short, feelings are neutral responses to stimuli; emotions are what color these experiences. For example, if we place our hand over a lit candle, we’ll feel a sensation, label it as pain, and then continue to embellish the scenario with likes, dislikes, attachments, aversions, desires and so forth, until a host of reactive patterns form over time. In this manner, we fashion a symphony of emotional responsiveness to all life experiences. The world is objective, and our responses to it are subjective. Life happens. How we engage it is our choice and, correspondingly, the key to emotional health and well-being. Another kind of feeling exists that is not influenced by mind/body but based in the soul. This feeling is rooted in the pure consciousness of Spirit that abides in the heart and manifests as unconditional love, compassion, peace, joy, wisdom, etc. It is free from
the reactive like-and-dislike bias born of our identification with the body, aka ego. Cleaning house
When cleaning house emotionally, it behooves us to first assess what we really want, and then we need to pursue the right steps to achieve it. First, consider that everyone is in pursuit of fulfillment. The journey of life is fundamentally orchestrated to have us seek joy. It is an evolutionary imperative. Unfortunately, we tend to look to the external world for such attainment and subsequently wind up developing the complex medley of reactive patterns that I described earlier. In short, we canoe down the river of life busily responding to internal prompts for fulfillment, but we do so by searching the shores of materiality for what is innately an internal thing. We look to the river bank when what we want is in our boat. The result is an ongoing hunt for what turns out to be elusive. During this sojourn, we learn to label what feels good or doesn’t, who we want to be with or don’t, what makes us feel happy, sad, and so forth. As such, we invest tremendous energy perceiving, then trying to govern, outer aspects of life in a vain effort to feel good. In actuality, nothing external can ever lastingly satisfy us. As souls, beings of Spirit, only the divine can provide us with lasting fulfillment. Thus, the somewhat perverse nature of materiality is to disappoint whenever lasting happiness is sought from it. Most of us don’t realize this until life has clobbered us sufficiently. At that point, we take notice. During our journey, then, we weave rich emotional brocades that clutter our lives with baggage — barnacles on the boat that create drag. When we hit the wall and say, “Enough!” it becomes time to clean house in a truly meaningful way. But how to do this and what should the results look like? An inner perspective
The first step involves, again, realizing that emotions are subjective interpretations. We can’t control life events, but we can manage our responses to them. The second step requires us to disengage from reactivity and reconfigure life from an inner perspective. Reconstruct your
place in the universe from that of a physical being whose happiness is gained externally. Recognize this as the cosmic lie that fosters perpetual frustration and a boatload of emotional grievances. Instead, reorient your vision of self to that of a soul being whose completion can only be found in the Sacred. With these distinctions in mind, learn to discern whatever transpires impartially. See and feel from a neutral perspective, without leaping to entrapping judgment. The mind, like a lake, reflects clearly when calm, but it becomes distorted whenever buffeted by emotional tempests. Accept that the happiness you seek is part of the soul landscape within you. Learn to tap the subtle attributes of Spirit that abide in the heart and higher astral centers of divine perception. Meditate. When the mind is intentionally stilled and the energies that keep us immersed in worldly experience are reversed, we find doors of intuitive realization open that expose our true and all-fulfilling soul nature. As we progress in this fashion, it becomes clear that our former entanglements were understandable, yet misguided. They represented efforts to create lasting happiness through untenable means. Again, our essence is joy itself and can only be found within the sanctum of the soul. Understanding
Where I’m going with all this is inherently simple: Get understanding. Cleanse the mind and heart of superficial reactions to life, negative

attachment to the past and long for what was. Honeysuckle introduces the rejuvenating energy of spring to the psyche so it once again feels free to fully experience life in the now as an everunfolding present and ever-possible future. Yerba Santa: Floods the heart with positive release, which allows us to transform deeply held grief and internalized sadness. The profound grief can sometimes be buried away, but it still grips the body with disturbances of the lungs and constricted feelings in the chest. Yerba Santa clears and frees the heart to experience life with renewed emotional presence. These are just a few examples of the fascinating array of emotional support flower essences provide. Nature has potent energies that help us purge the old and embrace new definitions of ourselves.
or positive, by being rooted in soul wisdom and perception. Only by accessing the unconditional Joy-Love of our true nature can we engage with life purely. When we shift from the addictive drama of likes, dislikes, blame, desire and judgment to the enduring arena of soul-centeredness, we discard emotional baggage that has limited our capacity for greatest satisfaction. Thus, we learn to live in the world yet not be of it, to love our enemies as our selves, and to return contempt with kindness, and so forth. By living in the sphere of pure feeling born of Spirit, our inner slate is cleansed deeply and permanently. Our sense of self is realigned and able to engage with the world fully, yet freely. This emotional detoxification program endures and offers ever-increasing benefits the more one adheres to it. Meditate. Seek the Kingdom within. Know the Truth and it will set you free. a Rev.
