IT’S NOT AN EASY undertaking, what spiritual leader Christine Day is asking us to do. Her guidance, revealed in the interview in this issue (with part 2 continuing online at Edgemagazine.net on August 1 and a free Edge Talk Radio podcast on “Inner Views” with Cathryn Taylor coming on September 10), suggests that our task at hand is to stay present, in this moment, and to let go of all actions that have become so routine in our lives that we do them on automatic pilot mode — including our spiritual rituals. She also says our focus is to be on ourselves, being present, so we are no longer spinning our wheels trying to change our external world to suit our view of how things should be. That, she says, is the foundation for selfmastery in this time, being called The Great Shift, as the Earth’s vibrational energy transforms from the third dimension to the fourth and fifth dimensions. Christine Day’s message reflects the evolution of human consciousness, from a collective slumber, or sleepwalking through life, to an awakening in which the past is nothing more than a story we continue to tell ourselves, and the future is just an imagining of the mind. That leaves us in the still, peaceful place where true life exists, in the present moment. This message is not new. As noted author and speaker Eckhart Tolle shared in an interview, “the word Buddha comes from the Sanskrit word Budh, meaning, ‘to be awake.’” “So Buddha,” Tolle says, “is not a name and ultimately not a person, but a state of consciousness. All this implies that humans are potentially capable of living in a state of consciousness compared to which normal wakefulness is like sleeping or dreaming.” A growing focus on presence is occurring naturally in all walks of life, and we are experiencing this in the Twin Cities. Internationally known author Leonard Jacobson spent time in

residence at Lake Harriet Spiritual Community, teaching simple steps on how to be present. And coming October 5 is “Presence: Summit,” a daylong experience at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in which a variety of speakers, including Joan Steffend and Cyndi Dale, will assist participants in embodying authenticity and presence (see Happenings on page 31 and read more about the event in the September Edge). Christine Day’s focus, however, melds being present with what many describe as the ascension process — the transformation of human beings into awakened ones who are able to operate in multiple dimensions simultaneously. That’s why those who teach psychic development are important. Regular use of intuitive skills helps move us out of the “automatic pilot” way of sleepwalking through life and into a more active way of engaging experiences in the present moment. We find new ways of coping that do not involve falling into past emotional patterns that prove destructive to ourselves and others. A wealth of opportunity exists to learn more about the changing energetics of the planet and how they are affecting the body. Teachers like Jeannie Hamm with Ascension Spirit [listen to the free Edge Talk Radio podcast at http://bit.ly/1tFVG6I] are assisting people in experiencing higher dimensional living. Personally, I meet all of this change one step at a time. I focus during my daily walks as I learned from the venerable monk Thich Nhat Hanh: We are present with each step. “Look around,” he says, “and see how vast life is, the trees, the white clouds, the limitless sky. Listen to the birds. Feel the fresh breeze. Life is all around and we are alive and healthy and capable of walking in peace.” a

Masked Deception by Vanatta Ka’i
Ego found a mask to wear One that had me fooled… Almost. It took the appearance of my inner voice Eloquent in its verse Whispering what it wanted me to hear Yet what it failed to realize Is that what it said wasn’t truth Its hollow meaning rang through me Its vibration sounded like tin Unlike that of intuition and instinct Which dance within my being When they emerge to guide my way Nice try, masked one Be on your merry way I know the deception you wreak. a Vanatta Ka’i is a student and Depth Worker under the tutelage of Hanakia Ek-Way Zedek, an urban shaman and spiritual teacher. Hearing guidance: messages often come with feelings by Lori Buss
It isn’t always guidance. Once, during an interview, I heard the words, “She’s beautiful.” My interviewer was thinking about a woman we were discussing, but never mouthed his opinion of her. That was telepathy, same as the time my niece called me a “b” (using the full word) at the end of an argument. Sometimes, we hear the thoughts of others. Sometimes, we’re told things by beings we may never see. A few years ago, as I read my client’s horoscope, I kept hearing instructions about placing sea salt under her bed to keep unwelcome visitors out of her dreams. This didn’t pertain to anything we were discussing. Nor was it something I saw in her chart (horoscopes don’t reveal that level of detail). Not knowing what else to do with the repetitive message, I finally said, “This isn’t in your chart, but I keep hearing that you should put sea salt under your bed to keep out of your dreams anyone who’s invading them.” Jaws dropped as my client and her partner looked at one another. She was experiencing this situation, and the message was welcome. We don’t hear guidance for others alone. Most often, we hear it for ourselves. Being clairaudient is not a “members only” situation. We all enjoy this ability, and need only recognize and accept this fact in order to implement it in our lives. We’re most familiar with clear hearing through the use of music. It’s common for us to have songs stuck in our heads. We often think this has happened because we recently heard the song, but pay close attention to the lyrics you’re hearing. They may contain a message for you, whether instructive or reassuring. After writing a letter to an acquaintance to clarify a situation, it appeared there would be no reply. But one day, as I walked to the post office to retrieve my mail, I kept hearing the line, “Please read the letter that I wrote,” from the song by Alison Kraus and Robert Plant. When I opened my P.O. box, there was a letter from the person I’d written waiting for me. Many years ago, my partner and I were camping at Comet Point, near Allenspark, Colorado. As I lounged in the sun, Clif came running, filled with excite-
ment. A dirt bike had ridden down the steep hillside, disturbing some animals, and they climbed up the cliff towards us to make their escape. We headed for a rock outcropping, where we stood face to face with four big horn sheep less than ten feet away. Clif was shaking, but I had no reaction at all. The message in that experience was for him, not for me. In the same way, we can tell when something we overhear contains important information for us. A crucial aspect of clairaudience is when we have a physical reaction to something we hear. The feeling is a sign for us. It’s our job to know or decipher how these overheard snippets apply to our lives. (We can ask for clarification if necessary.) Psychic channels frequently work together. Clairaudience may be accompanied by one or more of the other three “clairs” — clairvoyance (seeing something, whether in your mind’s eye or in the outer world), clairsentience (kinesthetic or “gut” feelings), and claircognizance (instantly knowing something out of the blue). It may be your primary, most natural way of spiritually receiving information, or it may serve to reiterate data you sense in another way. It’s your choice whether to put effort into developing clear hearing. My own psychic sensitivity has opened spontaneously and gradually. Our horoscopes show how open we naturally are, as well as when we might expect expansion of these gifts. Pay attention to those songs stuck in your head, and to things you hear within and without. There are helpful messages available to you when you’re open to hearing guidance. a Lori Buss is a Twin Cities astrologer. What sunscreens are safe to use? earthtalk®
by E - The Environmental Magazine Dear EarthTalk: With summer officially here now, what can you tell us about which sunscreens are safe and which are not? — Clara Rosen, New York, NY Skin cancer is by far the most common form of cancer in the United States, with more new cases each year than breast, prostate, lung and colon cancers combined. And the rate of newly diagnosed cases of the most deadly skin cancer, melanoma, has tripled over the last three decades. But many of the sunscreens on the market do not provide enough protection from the sun’s damaging rays. Also, some of them contain chemicals that can also cause health problems in their own right. According to the non-profit Environmental Working Group (EWG), which assessed the safety and effectiveness of more than 1,400 “SPF” (sun protection factor) products for its 2014 Guide to Sunscreens, only one in three sunscreens for sale on the shelves of American stores offers good skin protection and is free of ingredients with links to health issues. For starters, read labels. Some common sunscreen ingredients to watch out for and avoid include: oxybenzone, which can cause allergic reactions and hormone-like effects; Vitamin A (AKA retinyl palmitate), a skin irritant and possible carcinogen; and fragrances which can contain allergens and chemicals. Also, spray sunscreens are suspect because inhaling some of the ingredients can irritate breathing passages and even potentially compromise lung function. And EWG warns to avoid products with SPF ratings higher than 50, as their use can tempt people to apply too little and/or stay in the sun too long. Sticking with products in the 15-50 SPF range and reapplying often makes much more sense. Some of the best choices are those sunscreens that employ either zinc oxide or avobenzone, both which have been shown to block the most damaging ultraviolet rays effectively without the need for other potentially troublesome additives. Some of the leading brands that meet EWG’s criteria for both safety and effectiveness include Absolutely Natural, Aubrey Organics, California Baby, Elemental Herbs, Goddess Garden, Tropical Sands and True Natural, among others. Check out EWG’s free online 2014 Guide to Sunscreens [www. ewg.org/2014sunscreen]. a EarthTalk® is written and edited by Roddy Scheer and Doug Moss and is a registered trademark of E - The Environmental Magazine (www.emagazine. com). Embodying Sacredness: On the rim of the Cauldron by Kara Vangen
This autumn will mark my 13th year as a teacher in a community that is often lovingly referred to as “cauldron.” The word cauldron is derivative of the older word caldera, which simply means “interior universe.” The Cauldron Studies program is a sacred feminine path, and the external world is considered a good measure for our internal or cosmic reality. We must have a foot in both “worlds” to become what we truly are. Attaching meaning to my 13th year of teaching is done lightly but with great respect. Not with my mind, but more with my heart. I want to celebrate 13 years around the wheel of the year, to mark what I have learned, (and unlearned) and to honor the inner work of everyone that I have encountered. The Cauldron Studies program provides theory and practice, and a psychological and spiritual model for further examination and exploration of the human soul. This path hopes to be more conscious of the patriarchal history of both religion and psychology, and intentionally incorporates women’s wisdom to create a balanced process. What is sacred feminine wisdom? How can we articulate this energy inclusively with grace and loving kindness? Psycho-spiritual development for women must include the whole person — the body, heart, mind, soul and spirit — inclusive to the many ways we identify ourselves as spiritual, soulful and relational beings. If done well, a sacred feminine path can include relational/connection practices while honoring skills of autonomy and individuation. We practice using story and myth, and rational thought with empirical methods, creative and embodied activities alongside of transcendent mindfulness practices. Living and spiritual practice are related activities that have equal value. We meditate and we clean the garage, we make art and we make dinner. We believe that the developmental process toward greater consciousness involves: deepseeing and memory; working with the senses and body; integrating fuller self-concepts, building community and developing capacity, cultural understanding and responsibility; the cultivation of felt, embodied and useful wisdom; and an active engagement in the broader world concerning justice, peace, and compassion across lines of religion, gender, race, sexuality, culture, age, or nationality. Each season the wheel turns again, and with summer my colleague and I find ourselves preparing for the next year of
study, watering the seeds that have been planted, getting ready for the harvest in late summer as this teaching year ends and another begins, we release and let go of some students while opening to others, new faces and souls, death and rebirth. We pray to “attract” just the right souls, leaving this up to the cosmos, and we engage and do the practical detailed work of preparing and developing another student body and curriculum. Showing up and letting go. Everything that we learn, or unlearn, informs our next year of study. It is alive and organic. For most women, inner development follows a path reflected in nature; beginning in the dynamic stillness of dark, growing/ waxing, full/fullness, decreasing/waning and emptying, to begin again in the dark. This endless, yet natural, cycle of life is eased in community. We lean into the interested gaze of others much like ourselves. We learn from each other. Women gathering in circles, asking where did we go wrong? Where did all this suffering come from? And how long can this go on? — Heather Murphy, lyrics from “Another Way”
Our inner yearning is not easily quenched or addressed by outer forms. We find ourselves working to integrate both poles of experience, ensuring that our outer work informs and is aligned with our inner truth. This is a continuous cycle of discovery and integration. We recognize that our insight must eventually be acted upon or it will recede back to where it came from. If you are given a gift yet refuse to unwrap and put it to use — what value does the gift have? If our psycho-spiritual development is grounded in the sacred feminine tradition, women will see, hear, feel and experience themselves and their ways of being in the world. We can learn, develop and engage in a developmental process that honors and integrates a tapestry of skills and values. As each of us is guided to tap into the innate wisdom of the body, the soulful yearning and the spiritual transcendence of the spirit, a deeper, sweeter balance will emerge in beauty and brilliance. a Kara Vangen, CHTP, has extensive training in the healing arts and Buddhist transformational studies. She is a member of the Diamond Approach and specializes in integrating mindfulness practices and the Feminine Healing arts. She has co facilitated and “mid-wifed” the Cauldron Studies program through the Tree and The Well with Cara Carlson, Ph.D., LICSW, who is an integral psychotherapist and consultant. Again, Apu Ausangate! Itineraries
by Efrén Francisco Solanas P.
Have we been schooled in how to best begin a new venture? And are we also lovingly advised in how to gracefully respond if it fails? Or does our culture blindly assume that American exceptionalism will order life and guarantees methodical progress towards inevitable success? I am asking these questions, for a new consciousness is urging me toward a state of radical surrender to a non-physical, spiritual force. Its directives require that I begin new tasks without being able to predict either my level of capability or the outcome. This is not a familiar state where I am comfortable. The relationship began spontaneously on a trek in the Peruvian Andes when a brilliant, snow-covered mountain transmitted an energy that opened my heart and provoked a spontaneous act of devotion. My search to understand led me to two Q’ero masters who maintain the Incan mystic tradition and I now walk a path defined by these men. The mountains instruct me and lend their presence regardless of my location. My first sitting with the Q’ero began in their sacred round house as they performed a divination process. Their hands gently stroked the coca leaves as they intoned prayers in Quechua. The fading light of afternoon illuminated the straw floor and two jaguar pelts on the wall. The first directive received was that I return to my point of origin. They explained that the location of our birth figures importantly in the life to follow. The two masters also confirmed my connection with the mountains. I did not feel joy when I discovered I was being set on another path of initiation, as my continuous travel over the past decade has at times been exhausting. Yet, when the hand of God appears, I am compelled to surrender in spite of any imagined challenge. Why resist such a gesture when it is my heart’s desire to walk in oneness with Divine Will? Rising into the sky behind the Q’ero temple is a snow-covered massif, Apu Ausangate (21,000 feet). Last year, after trekking to the base of the mountain, my first initiation lasted late into the night as I sat alone in a snowstorm where the Apu instructed me that
I was to lead two groups to Peru. Returning home to Minnesota, I knew that I had important inner work to do. I also faced a vast amount of administration involved for the new venture. My doubt conspired with laziness, attempting to convince me that I was mad and certainly brash to think I was qualified to take strangers into an extreme, high-altitude environment! Six months later, I prepared my return to Peru to continue the initiations and subsequently meet the group that would be arriving from three continents. I felt like an astronaut, straining to break free of gravity. While clinging to the familiarity of home, I readied for the journey. Each time I prepare to depart, I ritually tend to my garden. This time, I planted nasturtium seeds — symbolizing victory through battle and conquest. The battle was with self-doubt and the conquest was radical acceptance. Seven courageous people were allowing me to guide them and this reality compelled me forward. I could not betray their confidence. On the long flight south to the arid plain of Lima, I finished reading The Collected Autobiographies of Maya Angelou that I had begun in mourning her death. Finishing the last page, I pushed back in my seat, took a breath and asked, “How can I embrace the totality of this exceptional woman?” Her story infused me with creativity and inspiration, reminding me of the crucial tenets of living a full life. This magnificent, warrior poetess would become my role model for the upcoming journey. In spite of the clamor of my doubts, I resolved to remember her mother’s rule that it is best to try and fail than not to try at all. I mustered a small portion of my heroine’s immense courage and resolved to walk proudly into the unknown as the plane sped through the blackness towards South America. My two-day encounter with the Q’ero began with a dual coca leaf reading, one for myself and a second for the group that would be arriving three days later. Both readings indicated harmony. The two masters and I left that day to climb to the base of Apu Ausangate. The sky was spectacularly clear. Golden grass unified the jumbled blue rock as it rose to the base of craggy peaks where brilliant white glaciers hovered in the alpine air. They began a ritual that continued late into the night, preparing many offerings for Apu Ausangate

Roasted Beet & Walnut Salad with Spiced Kombucha Vinaigrette by Maggie Christopher
Kombucha, a fermented tea of Asian origin, offers a flavor reminiscent of apple cider vinegar; it’s sour, but also mildly sweet. Its flavor pairs well with warm spices like cinnamon, cloves and allspice, while its acidity is strong enough to stand up against the sweet and earthy tones of root vegetables and nuts. This salad is a lovely way to take advantage of this summer’s beets. Salad 2 pounds beets 1 TBS ghee or butter 3/4 cup walnuts, chopped
12
www.edgemagazine.net
1 small red onion, cut into thin rings
Vinaigrette 2 TBS kombucha, original flavor 1/4 tsp sea salt 1/4 tsp allspice 1/8 tsp ground cloves 2 TBS cold-pressed walnut oil 2 TBS cold-pressed olive oil
3. To prepare the vinaigrette, whisk the kombucha tea with the salt, allspice, cloves, and the two oils. The vinaigrette will last 3 weeks at room temperature. Shake before using. 4. Just before serving, heat a skillet over mediumhigh heat for 2-3 minutes until very hot. Toss in the walnuts and toast them for 3-5 minutes, stirring frequently to avoid scorching.
Directions 1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
5. Remove the cold beets from the fridge, peel them, and chop into bite-sized pieces. In a large bowl, toss the beets with the onion slices and toasted walnuts. Drizzle with the vinaigrette, toss again, and serve. Serves 4-6. Recipe compliments of Jennifer McGruther, The Nourished Kitchen. a
2. To prepare the salad, trim the beets by removing any beet tops and the tips of their roots. Dot each beet with a touch of ghee (clarified butter), then wrap each in parchment paper and again in aluminum foil. Roast the beets for 45-60 minutes, until they yield under the pressure of a fork. Refrigerate the beets for at least 8 hours and up to 24 hours.

and Pachamama, Mother Earth. I sat silent, bundled in my alpaca poncho and gloves, observing their care and patience in assembling the many elements. I was then led into the darkness where a peat fire was built and the offerings burned. The Q’ero then descended, leaving me in the immensity of the mountain theatre. Uncountable stars shone in the sky. A distant storm on the other side of the mountain range lit up the entire Apu Ausangate with frequent bursts of lightning. The ice would suddenly transform into an immense light, as if the entire mountain was illuminated from within. The spectacular pulsing continued as I settled into my rocky perch, quiet and available. I reviewed the months since the Q’ero had directed me to return to my estrella — my place of origin — my writing and subsequent revelations. I felt I had accomplished what was necessary, although I was sure there was still something yet to be unlocked from within the land of my birthplace. Later, the Q’ero climbed to retrieve me
and we spent the night on the mountain. The next day, we descended so that I could return to Cusco and prepare to meet the group. The particular facet of the human jewel known as Maya Angelou that I am attempting to embody is her capacity to step into a new experience, poised and confident in her inner resource and committed to personal integrity. I now focus on the arc being constructed between the moment of my birth and the cusp of what is unfolding in my life. I venture to gently walk that luminous line, open and trusting. a Efrén Francisco Solanas P. is a teacher and practitioner of Senderos de Luz, a combination of powerful multi-dimensional healing modalities. August Horoscope: Discovering what drives us Star Wisdom
by DK Brainard
The strong Leo energy makes us want to shine, while Mars and Saturn in Scorpio push us to face our fears and discover what truly drives us. Aries (Mar. 21-Apr. 19)…All of the excuses we employ to put off “following our bliss” boil down to one thing: we’re too afraid to do battle with the monsters in our own psyche. But you’re a warrior at heart and your guiding spirit Mars wants to lead you into battle this month. Confronting your deepest fears — and the manipulative behavior they create — opens you to experiencing your heart’s desires. Taurus (Apr. 20-May 20)…Want to solve your relationship problems once and for all? Go home, either literally or in your mind, and observe mom and dad. Watch how they relate to both the people they like and those they merely tolerate. There’s a way of positioning the ego against “the other” that you absorbed and it screws up your relationships. See it and you’ll set your love free. Gemini (May 21-June 20)…The Buddhists call them “tolerations” — the clutter on your desk, the trip to the gym, the unpaid bills on your to-do list. It takes a lot of mental energy to avoid these things. If you’re going to do a thing, just do it. If you’re not going to do it, cross it off your list and let it go for now. Facing your tolerations head-on will reenergize your life and fire up your enthusiasm. Cancer (June 21-July 22)…Want to invite more money, resources or personal power into your life? Stop making excuses for not creating. Whether you want to write a book, master the guitar or start your own herbalism practice, resolve — not money — is at the heart of the matter. Your will is strong this month, but it needs to be directed into what matters to you.
Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)…You can blame bad luck, unreliable people, or a lack of support for falling short of your dreams. But Mars and Saturn are pushing you to realize that the only thing that holds you back is the hidden fear and shame you hold for being so radiant. You are special! Own that fact and reclaim your rightful place as author of your life. Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)…You can’t see the DNA that animates each cell of your body. Does this make it unreal? So many forces you can’t see with your physical eyes are supporting your growth and urging you on into joy. But you can’t access this abundant support when your mind sees only concepts and not reality. Choose to become the master of your thoughts, rather than their slave. Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)…What is the shadow of success? What holds you back from your dreams isn’t money but rather your subconscious fears about what will happen when you get what you want. The more you force yourself to watch that subconscious horror flick, the more you’ll realize it’s just a movie. Then you’ll be free to turn it off and live your life. Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)…It’s understandable you would feel ashamed of your power. Just look at what you learned about it from your parents. But whether you’re trying to protect others from yourself or protect yourself from others, it’s time to grow up and take responsibility for who you are. You didn’t come here to be nice; you came here to make a difference. Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)…Mars and Saturn are challenging you to a dumpster dive of the soul. This will most likely not be a lot of fun. It would be much easier to avoid it. But if you’re willing to force yourself to look at all the psychological garbage you’ve been dragging around, you
could change the course of your entire life over the next six weeks.
Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)…You can channel a tremendous amount of willpower into realizing the dream of your life this month. Your visionary singlemindedness might frighten someone close to you. It will be tempting to pull back and settle for less than you deserve. But before you let yourself down, ask yourself if playing small is really helping them. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)…You are beginning to see that you could actually achieve your goals and manifest the life you want. But this realization triggers your deepest fears about relationships: isolation, exile, banishment. Rather than run from these fears, allow yourself to fully fantasize your worst-case scenario. Then be yourself anyway. The fear is just a cloud in the mind obscuring the reality of unlimited love. Pisces (Feb. 19-Mar. 20)…Forcing yourself to “try harder” or to overcome your bad habits through willpower won’t solve the problem for long. The problem is not your lack of self-discipline or stamina, it’s the core belief that says you are flawed and therefore unworthy of your dreams. You don’t change a core belief; you stare at it till you can see through it to the truth. a D.K. Past lives do affect your present life by Linda Deer Domnitz
Past lives make logical sense! Why would someone be born blind, or killed in war, or live in abject poverty when someone else lives in a happy family in peacetime and is financially secure? Also, why do some people have battles with a pattern of continuous bad luck that they are seemingly unable to change? One way of looking at this is that before we incarnate onto this earth plane, we have the intention to work on certain lessons. When we fail at the end of a lifetime to learn that lesson, we get another chance to do a “make over” in another incarnation — with a different set of circumstances or sometimes with the exact person we were with before. But what often happens is that the lesson is still not learned, and therefore a pattern starts to develop. With each succeeding life, the pattern becomes more ingrained, resulting in greater difficulty to overcome it. From this present life’s perspective, we are puzzled about why we should have this particular pattern or bad luck and how to release it. In actuality, it is just a particular lesson coming up again for resolution. Fortunately, we can access this information easily through the use of hypnosis. Every memory we have ever had in any lifetime is recorded in our subconscious memory computer, and we can gain access to it through our conscious intention to do so in a very relaxed state. Past life regression gets at the root from so long ago of when this pattern first began and through good understanding and forgiveness releases the pattern so that it never returns again in this present life or in subsequent lives. Almost any unresolved issue begun in a past lifetime can affect our present circumstances in health, relationships, career, finances, fears, phobias and addictions.
One common fear is of one’s personal psychic or healing abilities. Someone may be fascinated by these subjects but have a terrific fear of developing them. Many times this can be caused by rejection, banishment, humiliation and even death (burning at the stake), for example, for being a medicine person in a past lifetime. Therefore, there is fear of developing these abilities again because of the subconscious fear that you may again suffer a similar fate. This pattern can be erased by forgiveness of the perpetrator(s) and remembrance of one’s innate psychic and healing abilities. The following are other fears and patterns that may arise from past lives: Fear of leadership — This can be caused by actual misuse of power or perceived, but not actual, misuse of power in a past life. Fear of intimacy — Many people with this issue were violated or abused in a previous lifetime and today still carry a lack of trust in and a fear of getting close to others. Failure to let go of a relationship — People may need to repay karma to one another before letting go. Money issues — These may be the result of greed to the point of harming others’ health and livelihood in a particular lifetime. Many people feel actual physical symptoms during hypnosis, such as pain or pressure in their chest or head, shaking of the body, difficulty breathing, and crying. These symptoms go away by the end of the session. a Linda Deer Domnitz (Deer) has been affiliated with the healing arts since 1974 and has been a pioneer in the past life movement. Breathe…and
let go
An interview on Self-Transformation in 2014 with Christine Day CD: That’s right, the great shift of energy that
by Tim Miejan
Christine Day is a leading spiritual teacher, healer, channel and author. Following a traumatic childhood in her native Australia, Christine was diagnosed with advanced Systemic Lupus at the age of 31 and given a short time to live. Shortly afterward, she experienced a profound spiritual awakening with the Pleiadians, the energy of which moved her to a place of complete self-healing. Since then Christine has been presenting Pleiadian Events, Seminars and Transmissions of Light throughout the United States, in Brazil and internationally. In multiple interviews over the past years in The Edge, Christine has revealed her personal journey in becoming who she is, as well as insight into what she describes as The Great Shift, the steady shift in vibration on planet Earth from the third dimension to fourth- and fifth-dimensional energy and the resulting transformation occurring within each and every person in the world. On her website at Christine Day online [www.christinedayonline.com], she regularly guides participants in guided meditations that support the body’s ability to adjust to the changing energy on the planet and the process of self-realization. She also has launched a new webinar series online, called “the Galactic Series,” which transmits even higher frequency energy (from the sixth, seventh and eighth dimensions) through communication portals being established at her center in Grand Marais on the North Shore, Minnesota. On October 11-13, Christine will lead a three-day Pleiadian Seminar on Self-Mastery at the Ramada Mall of America near the airport in Bloomington. She spoke by phone from her home in Grand Marais about the upcoming seminar, as well as the incredible transformation she has been going through personally while going through a sequence of energetic initiations to enable her to create the communication portals. How are you, Christine? Christine Day: Very well. I’m going through
a lot of transformation right now and I’ve been home for the last three weeks, so it’s been a very powerful time for me. Now, I’m home for the rest of July as well, which is most unusual. Aren’t you usually down in Brazil? CD: Yes. My guidance was really to spend
some time up here and I’ve really gone through a tremendous awakening in the last week, so I’m just still in the middle of that,

is happening right now.
Will you speak to the importance of that, and what does the veil signify? CD: Yes. I think this is a really important
A free podcast with Christine Day will be featured September 10 on “Inner Views” on Edge Talk Radio. but I’m just going with the flow. That’s all I can do. You just have to let go and allow yourself to do what’s happening. You really can’t do anything about what’s going on. So, that’s what I’m doing. It’s an ongoing process, right? CD: It is an ongoing process for all of us.
We’ve started the Galactic Series up here with the communication portal, offering live webinar classes with people worldwide, and that has been just profound. We also have a Lemurian portal opening up directly out in front of the house in Lake Superior and we’ve been building this communication portal for the last 12 months in readiness for these live webinars that I am transmitting directly from that portal out to everybody. So, I’ve been going through a very rapid transmission to be able to hold all those new energies that are coming onto the planet. It has been a lot, but it’s not too much. It’s just part of the evolvement. Is the key to have patience and just move step-by-step? CD: It is really about moving into a place that
is unfamiliar — and then there is no choice, because you are in the middle of it. It’s like going on a roller coaster ride at a fun fair. You can’t get off the ride once you’re on it, so I think we’re all on a ride right now. (laughs). Listening to your latest transmission on your website, it seems like the big news relates to the lifting of the veil.
topic, Tim. The great shift began June 16 and it’s going right through to December 29 this year. Every three weeks, there is a lifting of the veil for 10 seconds. The Pleiadians give me a picture like we are sitting in a theater when the curtain goes up. What is revealed behind the curtain is the truth. It’s like an awakening from the dream, realizing that we have been living this dream in the third dimension and we begin to remember and glimpse an aspect of our higher frequency of self from a fourth- and fifth-dimensional perspective. It’s like being engrossed in a dream at night and then suddenly realizing, “Oh, my gosh, this is only a dream.” That’s really how the spiritual realms see our experience here on the Earth plane, that we are in a dream and there is a huge illusion here in which time seems to be endless, but actually, it is a very short time that we are experiencing this illusion — and we’re awakening from the dream. So, what’s been set in place is a series of lifting of the veil for 10 seconds. It doesn’t matter what path you’re on. During this lifting of the veil, we all come back into remembering and glimpsing ourselves from that fourth- and fifth-dimensional perspective. We said to the Pleiadians: “10 seconds? Oh, my gosh, that’s nothing.” But the Pleiadians talk about the moment, that one moment when you align to it, where you’re not in the past or the future, but you’re actually being in the moment. It actually opens to a multidimensional experience of timelessness. So in reality, the lifting of the veil 10 seconds results in 10 individual moments — and each moment is unlimited. Part of what I’m doing right now is teaching people how to come back to the moment of the experience, because there is no time and we can reconnect back into an experience of that moment and allow ourselves to revisit those seconds when the veils lifted and allow a further birthing within the multidimensional moment. There is really an unlimited amount of time and space for us to revisit that energetic experience. You bring your awareness to the specific feeling you had within the actual experience and allow yourself to move deeper into a further understanding and receiving of that
sacred self, and that awakens you further. Part of my role is to bring this understanding to people so they understand how to work with this new dimensional dynamic, and to announce when the next veils are lifting. July 6 was the second lifting of the veils, and three weeks later (July 27), will be the next one [August 17 will be the fourth one]. I’m just bringing the information from the Pleiadians and giving people an understanding of where we are, and as those veils lift how we re-enter and open to what is revealed so we can connect and transform. Would you describe this process that you teach as an inner journey? CD: It’s an inner journey, but it’s also
connected to the human aspect. There are some key pieces we need to be doing right now in our lives within the thirddimensional experience to support this self-transformation. What is being called for right now is a willingness to let go and allow ourselves to open our attention to the moment, to be aware of what’s around us. They’re calling for us to break our rituals down. As human beings, we have lots of rituals: the way we take a shower every morning, the way we eat, the way we do everything. That keeps us almost in a dissociative state from being present. We go into automatic. So the Pleiadians are suggesting that we stop the rituals, that we consciously choose to change the way we do things, even the simple way of what we do in the morning. By just changing the order in which we do things, it will move us out of that dissociative disconnection from the moment and start bringing ourselves more focused on what we’re doing and how we’re doing it and what is taking place around us right in this moment of time. It’s about being aware of our physical body, the noises outside, our environment in the moment.
That is a very big factor to starting to awaken from the dream and making a conscious choice to do it differently. That will help us open up and align more to our spiritual nature and be aware of what we’re doing and what we’re feeling and how our bodies are feeling in the moment. They are saying to break down even the spiritual ritual, and this is something I have done. I’ve been on the spiritual path, I work with the Pleiadians, I know my truth, I know the truth, and I’ve been asked to let it all go, to be willing to drop everything I believe, all the structures, all the things I do in my ritual for connection — to just let it go. It’s almost like opening a new page in a book or a new canvas and allowing myself to be moved. This is part of where I’ve gone through this tremendous awakening in the past two weeks. I let everything go. I just dropped my ritual, dropped my truth, and opened up to not knowing, to allow myself to move in a new direction, but not try to control it. You now are a blank canvas, and if you have dropped essential truths, they will come back. This process allows for this great shift energy and the magnificence of our pure source energy of our Higher Selves to come in and start operating through us so that more can be revealed. I am working with people through the free video broadcasts on our website, helping them work within the moment and work with the lifting of the veil times. I am offering specific tools on how to come back into that multidimensional moment and allow the full experience and how to participate through conscious choice in this great shift time. Removing the rituals seems like it may be a difficult task for people who have been on the spiritual path for quite a while. CD: You know what? It puts you off center. It
really is disarming, but it’s not a bad thing.
If we think we know, then we can’t take on anything else. The ego loves to know, and it loves to be right. It’s invested in being right. The key is being willing to release being right. It’s quite a concept, I know. I find, too, that some people on the spiritual path may not be aware consciously that they have a spiritual pride about themselves and put themselves above other people. CD: There’s an arrogance. So, I think this process is a good thing. CD: It’s a powerful, empowering thing.
When you hold onto your spiritual arrogance and cling to it, it doesn’t allow for the energy in this great shift time, in the new dawning, to come in. For those of us who have prided ourselves with knowing this and being able to do that — well, we have to laugh at ourselves for taking it so seriously and in being right and being on the right path. Behind it all is the magnificence of our self. So for two weeks I have been letting go and I was taken to the higher realms beyond where I have ever been to — and it’s very emotional for me. I came into a reconnection with a much higher Source of myself, to another level, what the Pleiadians call a different authority of essence. It has not left me, and it’s taken me into a total tailspin, I have to tell you, where I’ve been really incapable of doing much at all. I found myself trying to get integrated in it so I would come back to something I could recognize, but that’s not happening, and I am not integrating, I am in a place that I do not recognize. It’s not comfortable, it’s totally unfamiliar, and I know I’m just going to have to adjust to being here — and I’m not at that place yet (laughs). So I take another step forward, and that’s Let Go continued on page 18
Three-day Pleiadian Seminar supports self-mastery The three-day Pleiadian Seminar presented by Christine Day returns to Minnesota on October 11-13 to support each person’s attainment of selfmastery and the process of moving back to a place of reconnection to our natural gifts, and to remember how to utilize these gifts. The seminar will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, and Sunday, Oct. 12, and from 9 a.m. to noon on Monday, Oct. 13 at the Ramada Mall of America in Bloomington, near the airport. The cost is $325. “This seminar is designed to support you in aligning back to your Master path and to begin to re-access knowledge, understanding and clarity of your personal Mastery path so that you can begin to utilize your Mastery energy consciously on a daily basis,” says Christine Day, a leading spiritual teacher, healer, channel and author. In this seminar the Pleiadians will set in place unique dimensional energies to create a “lifting of the veils,” which will enable participants to awaken from the dream and to begin a dynamic remembrance process. Participants will work closely with the energies of the Pleiadians, Lemurians as well as the
energies of Mother Mary and the Christ energy. The Spiritual realms also will play a significant role during initiations in this seminar. And for the first time, the seminar will introduce powerful energetic portals that are designed to re-align each person to his or her Master path. Once aligned to one’s Mastery energy, sacred processes will support participants in working directly with self-mastery gifts. Those who take part in this event will be given support to achieve a sense of peace, understanding and clarity, as well as a sense of well-being as they are realigned naturally back to their Mastery energy. The seminar introduces a powerful rejuvenation and recalibration process that takes place within the cells of the body, activating a natural self-healing process as participants move through this self-empowering transformation process. During this three-day process, channeled dialogue by the Pleiadians will support participants as they navigate through these changing times on our earth plane. Let Go continued from page 17 where I am now — totally disarmed, on another level after dropping all my rituals and just allowing myself to not know, and now I’m in a deeper space of not knowing (laughs). I don’t know where this is going to end, and, of course, my ego mind wants it to come to an end, but I don’t think it’s going to. I’ve had to accept that. And yet, I am still looking for something that will bring some sort of relief to me from an ego perspective — and I know it’s not going to happen. I will adjust. I don’t know when. I can only liken it, Tim, to the time when I met that Pleiadian ship 22 years ago, when I turned that corner and that space ship was there and the Pleiadians were coming out transmitting to me. I was bedridden for two months. The fact is, I’m not bedridden now, but I probably haven’t been in a state like that until now. This is equal to that on some level. A common instruction you offer during your transmission is, “Breathe and let go.” Can you talk more about the letting go process and what it really means? CD: Yes, these are simple words, but the process
itself is not. It actually is so simple it is difficult for a human being to comprehend, the letting go of everything that we hold to be true, like the rituals we were just talking about, letting go of the past and the things that we have chosen to blame ourselves for. That keeps us in this separated state, so that we are caught up in this vicious cycle of selfcondemnation and blame and guilt and shame. With this changing dimensional energy, none of those things matter anymore. All those experiences have brought us to where we are right now, but they were only experiences. Say I had a dream last night and I did something in the dream and then I woke up and with relief thinking, “Thank goodness that was just a dream!” Well, it’s the same for our lives. Everything we’ve done here is just a moment in time. It’s just a dream to have an experience, and yet we still cling and hold tight to it. Letting go is that conscious breath in and out the mouth that assists that energy not to recycle through the body, but to really leave the body so that we can start moving and aligning to the truth of the dimensional energies that are connected with the lifting of the veil. We can allow ourselves to begin to move into the truth of what is real — and that is our fourth- and fifth-dimensional pure source of light energy, that Higher Self energy. Begin to open into the flow of that. But while we hang on tight to the past, we cannot enter that flow, and we really remain stuck and separated with the self-condemnation. The Pleiadians talk about changing this relationship with ourselves and our experience of being human for lifetimes, transforming that relationship of selfcondemnation to a place of love and compassion and patience for all that we are now, for all that we have gone through, for the courage it takes to live out this incarnation. It still takes courage, but the fact is, we have another element that we have never had in any other lifetime: the awakening of our sacred natures, which is here for us to reach
18
www.edgemagazine.net
for and to align to now, like never before, with the lifting of the veils that has begun. The Pleiadians call this time a turn in the wheel of our destiny. That letting go energy is becoming more and more potent in this new energetic setting. Through conscious choice, through our own stepping up and reclaiming ourselves, we let go and allow another turn in the wheel for ourselves at this time. Some who are new to the process may wonder if there is remedial instruction required to get up to speed, or can anyone jump in and move right into your current broadcasts that you offer? CD: Anyone can jump in, because it’s simply the
time when everyone on the Earth plane right now has said yes to being here now. It’s everyone’s destiny through conscious choice to begin to reclaim themselves. The Pleiadians are really stressing the importance of bringing all our focus back to ourselves, that everything comes from our own pure source of light, from the very center of ourselves. It’s so important right now that everything arises from the center of ourselves, from our pure source of light. It’s important to move our focus and attention from outside of ourselves to knowing that everything comes from our central self. We need to bring our focus and consciousness back, and from there we can source all that we need. That is part of the three-day Pleiadian Seminar coming in October, which is called The Mastery Class. It’s a self-mastery activation. The Pleiadians are going to be creating processes and bringing tools to people so they can re-align back to their self-mastery energy. Part of our destiny in this lifetime is to reconnect to our self-mastery energy — and this is the first time it’s been offered in the Pleiadian seminar. The time is right, with the great shift and the lifting of veil. Those who take part in the Pleiadian seminar will leave with tools that support self-healing and self-manifestation and being able to source from that central place within themselves through the activation of that self-mastery. It’s going to be one of the most powerful seminars we have had up to this point. We’ll be giving out handouts and stepby-step processes with those tools so people who come will be able to continue the unfolding of this pure source energy of their Higher Selves. It’s also part of what the Pleiadians are saying, to stop bringing your focus outwards into the world to save people and save the planet and come back and reveal the sacred nature of yourself. That’s the hardest thing for a human being to do. We want to escape and not come back to ourselves. We want to take the attention off ourselves and bring it outward. But it’s time to move our focus back to self, and that’s part of letting go. a

Sounds that heighten, heal Spirit Leaves
by Janet Michele Red Feather
The dimensional shift introduced us to higher frequencies. In an effort to bridge the incongruity this created, it is no wonder we turned to sound to smooth the vibrational disparity. We use Tibetan singing bowls, chimes, tuning forks, crystals, and meditative CDs to calm our discordant spirits. I’ve noticed lately my sense of hearing has become acute, as though some invisible hand turned up the volume knob. I understand now that life as an empath may involve living in an “altered state” — with a heightened sensitivity to sound. Mandan wisdom holds that there are four parts of a person. As Cedric Red Feather (Mandan Turtle Priest) has identified them to me, they are the mental, physical, spiritual and social. I realize now that sound resonates within all four parts at once. Our response is especially strong, Cedric notes, when we hear our own name spoken. Tones spiral through the chakras and gather these four parts, arranging our internal, auric and etheric layers into a unified field that enables us to harmonize energetically with our Higher Self. This linkage affords an elevated feeling of personal congruence, and that is why sound feels so healing to us. Previously, I had been holding back my own spiritual growth by subscribing to labels for my “condition.” Expressions like “hypersensitive” or “strung out” came to mind. I could barely endure crowded places. The chatter of human beings was torture, and loud people made me feel like bolting. A friend called for solace one day, a listening ear. During the entire call, I struggled to remain present with the stream of vocal ebullience cascading in my ear. A slightly wicked voice within me urged, “Hurry up. Finish your thought. I can’t listen anymore!” I felt guilty and annoyed with myself. I really love this sweet person, so what was the difficulty? It was a great relief to me when, later, I learned through the Guides that auditory acuteness has a purpose. Sound is a natural way of attunement with nature, stars, planets, humans and other dimensions. There are messages on the wind. Birds converse in the open air. Storms create a symphony. Torrential rains resound exponentially, sweeping over rooftops and sluicing down side-
walks. Tree branches quiver and sway. Thunder rumbles and roars. Celestials offer a light ringing sound. The entire Universe reverberates with sound. Human voices can seem brash and discordant. Native people knew this and used nonverbal communication. True Traditional People are quiet in demeanor, and refined telepathic ability seems natural to them. Those who have fasted, Cedric advises, listen to all of Creation with their hearts. They experience the symmetry of sound, which out of necessity requires both a transmitter and a receiving ear. Native Americans used drums, flutes and rattles. I’ve read of people using drums to “induce trance states,” but that is not the only beauty of the Indian drum. There are songs for every occasion in life, and the Spirits love hearing them. Some are personal songs, and Spirits who have crossed over recognize and appreciate the familiar cadences. For the living, the beat of the drum instantly brings us into the vast and comforting space of the heart, helping us grow spiritually. As an empath, I feel the greatest contribution humans could make to the planet right now is to listen. In the movie Kundun, a film that chronicles the life of the Dalai Lama, the Chinese government orders the invasion of Tibet. Loudspeakers blare Mao’s propaganda in the streets, while, inside the Potala, ministers, monks and the Dalai Lama confer, pray and meditate. As a barking radio announcer with gong-accented music interrupts their soft conversation, the Dalai Lama — instead of becoming angry — says very softly, “They have taken our silence.” Our world is in a similar state of cacophony, presently. Were we to restore the silence, we could become more attuned with nature. We would once again be nourished by the songs in the wind, the voices of leaves, and the distant cries of night birds. Sound is the universal link to other dimensions. Through sound, we will arrive at an instantaneous energetic alignment within, and the rest will be ascension history. a

Healing with sound by Joanne Wakefield In the meditation tradition I have practiced for many years, it is said that the first movement away from Source into physicality came in the form of the breath — and sound then followed on that breath. It follows then that sound is intimately connected to Source, and it can be a way back to that Source connection, to alignment and congruence. Where an individual may have moved out of alignment and out of health, sound vibration using pure tones opens a pathway back into balance and physical alignment. Sound can be used as a healing energy modality or as a tool to shake loose what is being held within the physical being — and also any restrictions to the spiritual self. I have experienced sound healing and acted as an instrument of sound healing over the course of my study and in my work. The main arena of my study in energy medicine has been through courses I have taken in Frequencies of Brilliance techniques, as a student and also as an assistant. In these programs, sacred energies and limitless possibilities are made available because the facilitator creates sacred geometry space using a tremendous amount of precision and attention to detail in setting up sacred space. While working in the workshops, sound is an integral component to the work. I learned through the workshops and trainings that using sound and movement facilitates a release of what is no longer needed, so what has been frozen or held within the tissues can move out, bringing greater freedom. Whether it is sound tones, screaming or crying, sound can be very healing. I found that as I did my work and opened to my light and divine nature, my voice changed. The tones I used became clear and pure and, in fact, they can and do create a resonance vibration that can speak to the heart of people I work with and can affect a change. Some people use sage to purify an environment, but I found that my sound tones work even better. There are many ways to affect a change. I find that the simplicity of sound, whether through the voice or through an instrument, makes good sense and creates ease. Sound from a drum or rattle connected to and guided by the drummer’s heart can work with individuals. The rhythm and tone expresses uniquely to and for each individual who is the subject of the drumming. I use the shamanic tools of the drum and rattle in my work. The resonant vibration is able to merge into a person’s energy field and shift that which is not congruent, what is out of balance. As I drum, the sound that arises takes on its own character or energy beyond myself. It is the song of the drum speaking to the person receiving it. It is my heart that hears the song and plays the drum. a Joanne Wakefield is a Frequencies of Brilliance Practitioner and a Higher Brain Living Advanced Facilitator. The silent healing of sound releases trauma in the body by Frank DiCristina I was exhibiting at an Alternative Health Expo several years ago — doing Harmonic Sound Therapy (Sound Healing) sessions using my Himalayan (Tibetan) Metal Singing Bowls — and was approached by a gentleman who said, “I have been watching what you are doing, so what’s your deal?” He was a fellow vendor and said he had been watching people before and after their sound healing session. People would come to my booth, get on my custom-built massage table that allowed me to properly place the singing bowls in the positions around the body to receive the optimal effect of their healing vibrations. He proceeded to tell me he talked to half a dozen different people who had received a session from me. They all had different results, but they all had positive things to say. Some had pain that went away, some felt relaxed, and some went into a deep sleep that they said they never felt before. Some journeyed to faraway places or planets or met their spirit guides. He proceeded to tell me his story and held out his trembling hand. He said, “I have Parkinson’s Disease, have you ever worked with that?” I said, “Not yet, but let’s give it a try.” He got up on the table; he was a long one, probably 6’7” and his feet hung off the end of my table. I got him set up comfortably, placed the bowls where they needed to go, and then had him do some deep breathing exercises to get him prepared. Meanwhile, I started Reiki and got a sense of his energy field. I then told him to relax and let the sound and vibrations of the bowls do their work. I started out with the first sequence of patterns, slowly and methodically striking the bowls one at a time in the precise order and timing needed. By the time I was halfway through the sequence, he was out cold, snoring. I continued the sequence, monitoring his breath, chest, arms, legs, and facial expressions for signs of distress and/or release. The session went on for around 30 minutes until it was time to bring him back.
I started to bring him back slowly by having him do the deep breathing again. I told him to feel the energy shifting through his body and out his feet, grounding him back into Mother Earth. When he came fully to, he told me he had a very deep and relaxing nap. His wife was there and she thought that was good, too. So he got up, went back to his booth to continue selling his products. Twenty minutes later, he returned to my booth and held out his hand again and said, “Before I saw you, I could not do this.” He showed me that his hand was not shaking anymore. He then explained this had been the most relief he has had in six years of Parkinson’s. We looked at each other, welled up with tears and had a huge manly hug together. The results of that treatment lasted six weeks. He continued to visit for a “tune-up” every now and then when he felt he needed it. The sound therapy did not stop the tremors and shaking completely, but it made them more manageable. Sound (Healing) Therapy was not some “magic” that was conjured up; it was a method to help reset his brain so he could cope with the stress of his disease. Many times a client seeks Harmonic Sound (Healing) Therapy looking to “try it out.” Many times they find relief and/or release from a past trauma. Finding that entry point to the trauma or issue and getting it to finally release is one of the goals of Sound Therapy. It is a practice that has been used effectively in the East for more than 10,000 years. a Frank DiCristina is a Traditional Harmonic Sound (Healing) Therapist and Instructor who shares his magnificent Himalayan singing bowls and gongs and exceptional healing techniques from the traditional clan knowledge practiced in the Himalayas, where people are traditionally healed with sacred sound currents for thousands of years. Frank is a Certified Building Biologist, (EMRS) Electromagnetic Radiation Specialist, Reiki practitioner, Laying-on-of-Stones practitioner, Ordained in the Order of Melchizedek as well as a Master Dowser. Sound healing for a group by Steve Sklar
In my last article for The Edge, I explored some of the theory, tools used and perspectives I’ve developed in the context of giving individual Sound Healing treatments. Now, I’d like to discuss Sound Healing in a group context. The last few years, my wife Johnna Morrow and I have been offering Sound Healing concerts and meditations in Minnesota and on tour. We get a fantastic response, but also we are asked many questions about the instruments, vocal techniques, and “what is going on and how does it work?” Some ask, “Is it like Kirtan?” and “Is it a sound bath?” So, let’s begin there, with what we’re not doing. Kirtan, which has become popular in recent years, involves call-and-response chanting of a devotional nature, rooted in India’s bhakti (Hindu) traditions. It’s important for our events to be open and comfortable for everyone, and we avoid any denominational aspects, and while there are indeed spiritual aspects, there is no group worship. I’ve never liked the term “sound bath” and always thought it sounded like one would need sound soap and sound towels! A bath is something in which one may be immersed, but it only touches one’s exterior. What we do has far deeper intentions. Each month on a Saturday night, people gather at Springhouse, a church in Minneapolis. Some are new and some experienced, but there is an expectant vibe. When the doors to the lovely and reverberant sanctuary open, most of the veterans head to the floor in front, where they deposit pads, yoga mats, sleeping bags, and themselves. Along with the soft house music, there are hushed exclamations and questions about the myriad exotic musical instruments. After a brief talk in which we state our intention and name people in need of healing, the program begins. There is a design, a sonic architecture, to the concert, beginning with a few pieces that are recognizable as songs. These may involve betterknown instruments such as guitar, and more exotic ones such as sruti box, didgeridoo and the Tuvan igil, along with vocals. Johnna sings the lyrics in her beautiful voice, and I add khoomei, or throat-singing, [Khoomei. com] and bird sounds. These soothing songs, and their exotic/nature sounds, serve as a calm gateway to the sonic journey. After these pieces, we turn to instrumental pieces. These are “semi-composed” with considerable improvisation that are intended to lead the listeners deeper into their own psyches. These include pieces for didgeridoos, world flutes and the single-headed frame drum. While the majority of the concert is played through a sound system, some pieces inspire us to move among the audience, playing didgeridoo or drum [listen at skysongpro.com/mp3s/ healingwatersexcerpt.mp3] directly into the
bodies of participants, providing a different, intimate and very direct sense of power. The next section involves the Himalayan metalophones (tingshas, singing bowls) [skysongpro. com/mp3s/for_tenzin.mp3], waterphone, and gongs, including some very large and beautiful examples. These instruments tend to propel the listener into a deeper space, one that many describe as cosmic. We begin gently with the bowls, and use them to accompany a Guided Sound Healing Meditation, taking the audience on a journey into themselves, down to the subatomic level, where we witness atoms and molecules as miniature galaxies, surrounded by vast space. The sounds penetrate these spaces, sweeping away all that is painful, negative and undesirable. We then take the listeners from inner to outer space with the gongs, which can provide a stunning variety of sonic colors and intensities. There are universes of cosmic voices in gongs if one knows how to summon them! We return to Earth, albeit a different place and century with a piece such as Chaco Spirits. This piece uses many interesting instruments such as ehecatls — also known as the Aztec Death Whistle — Native American Flute, ocarinas, sruti box, throat-singing and bird sounds to conjure a very eerie sense of desert beauty. Once again, we utilize the sounds of nature, which are so lacking in many of our lives. We end the concert with a soft, gentle jaw harp duet, which returns us to the present time and location, followed by a discussion with audience members. a The next Sound Healing concert is August 23 at Springhouse Ministry Center, Minneapolis. Steve Sklar is a sound and shamanic healer, teacher, musician and throat-singer. He and his wife Johnna have a new CD, The Power of Sound Vol. 1. ‘Hush, little baby, don’t say a word…’ by Rev. Richard W. Curney
Sounds of comfort, sounds of majesty. Sounds of eternal longing in the trees. Sounds all around us and within us. The many worlds of sound are akin to all the many dimensions of existence. Physicists are now finally hearing the call to help humankind awaken to the wondrous creation in which we live. We shut out sounds we don’t want to hear. A harsh word may close our heart. Sounds of discord may close our mind. Be strong enough in mind and heart to let the unpleasant dissonance of life find its natural death. If we don’t add to it and everyone else eventually gets the idea that things like anger and selfishness are not necessarily doing them any real good, we will become wiser stewards of sound.
We have so much untapped capability to hear. We hear with our hearts. An open heart will hear more of what someone is trying to say. The inner ears of our minds always learn more when we let them. To OM is to soothe yourself and the world. All the cyclic elements of creation are contained within its sound. In the Western traditions, “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.” The reality of God is heard through Jesus, the Word of God. Our mind, heart, and outer ears were meant to hear the harmonies in the meaning of all sound. When we listen with all of our natural capabilities, we become a receptor for all the dimensions of sound. Mindful listening is allowing our consciousness to sift through the symphony of all the sounds of a day in the city. So
many of them can flow through us without an echo and dissipate into the distance. Many of them we keep and learn more about the science of becoming who we are. Mindful listening outside of the city seems to demand less sifting. Larger musical themes in nature borrow from the eternal symphony playing through the trees, the birds, and peals of thunder. All sounds are part of an endless concert that is being composed in each moment with the heavens conducting the score. Planets love to dance to the evolving music, and we, for our part, just need to listen. a Rev. Richard W. Curney has been the Rector of Saint Francis Liberal Catholic Church in Minneapolis since 1989. He publishes “Prof. Asabov Soblo’s E = MC2 Update” and “Morning Haiku” on line. He is the author of Screaming Like Giants and numerous poems. Copyright © 2014. All Rights Reserved.
Sacred sound supports blessings and ceremony by Carolyn Vinup
Ceremony and traditions enrich our lives. In today’s busy 24/7 world, we need ways to unplug and experience more peace and places where we can unwind and melt into our sanctuaries. We need communities where we can feel safe to express ourselves as conscious awakened beings. We need skilled energy healers to help us navigate our busy lives and sacred ceremony and traditions provide a path that lights our way. Over the past decade, my journey with sacred sound has expanded my awareness, enhanced my intuitive skills, deepened my relationship with source and touched my heart. Ancient traditions like sacred sound remind us that we are part of something bigger, and when we embrace traditions, rituals and ceremony, we are able to participate in the energy of vibrational alignment where we can experience guidance, divine wisdom, peace, love, healing, delight, amusement, surprise, joy, bliss, compassion and forgiveness. When we are in alignment with who we are and what we share with the world, we dance in the magic of possibilities and our lives begin to anticipate that something wonderful is about to happen. I love working with sacred sound and sharing the blessings, attunements and ceremonies with others. My sacred sound sessions, which last 1-2 hours, will ignite your inner radiance and fill your heart with joy. You will feel peace and expansiveness. You will feel loved. My favorite sacred sound ceremonies are the following: The Blessing, inspired by the Prayer of Jabez Ringing in New Beginnings Divine Will Attunement I Am Light Awakening Your Abundant Heart A Sound Health Tune Up and Energy Balancing Sound acts like a massive transmitter as our thoughts, sighs, hums, songs and words communicate to our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual selves. By engaging sacred sound in simple, yet conscious ways you develop a powerful self-help tool and expand positive energy around you, which attracts opportunities your way.

The art & science of sound healing Reduce pain, anxiety and overwhelm; add peace, calming and joy by Kay Grace
Sound healing is a form of energy medicine based on vibrational frequencies. Everything in the universe is made of energy, which vibrates at its own unique speed or frequency. That means everything is sound, whether it’s audible to us or not. A primary principle of sound healing is that symptoms and suffering, whether physical, spiritual, mental or emotional, first occur in the Human Energy Field, and the stronger this dissonant or chaotic energy becomes, the greater the impact it will have on the person. When we change the energy field, symptoms and behaviors also change. If a person is ill, in physical pain or feels out of balance mentally, emotionally or spiritually, the system is not “in harmony” or vibrating at its optimal level. Sound healing brings the entire system back toward more order and harmony, using tools, technique and intention. On a physical level, sound healing effectively induces a state of calm, slows down breathing, heartbeat and brainwave activity, lowers blood pressure, alleviates pain, and reduces stress, all of which boost the function of the immune system. Harmonic singing and other forms of sound healing have been shown to enhance memory, charge the brain’s cortex, and even teach and entrain the brain to restore and replace weak, dormant or missing frequencies. Sound can take your brain waves from active to alpha, as if you were meditating, or even into a theta brain wave state, where very deep healing often occurs, just below the surface of your conscious awareness. The Journal of Advanced Nursing reported that listening to classical music for one hour a day for one week reduced chronic pain by up to 21 percent, and depression by up to 25 percent in people with a range of conditions including rheumatoid arthritis. Mozart’s music has been found to reduce the electrical activity associated with seizures in people with epilepsy. A leading New York oncologist uses Crystal and Tibetan singing bowls and Hindu Sanskrit chanting to help cancer patients; in his book, The Healing Power of Sound, Dr. Mitchell Gaynor discusses the amazing results seen by integrating music, vocalization and meditation into patient care. Sound and music can help you shift from one state of energy to another, from feeling tired and depressed, to feeling more calm, energetic and happier. Intention is critical to sound healing. What the healing practitioner and the person receiving the sound intend, combined with the state of being you’re in encodes itself onto the sound. Sound contains information, and even if we are unaware of this consciously, our bodies and subconscious minds recognize and respond to this information. Sound healing tools and techniques include
Voice (Toning, Chanting, Singing, Shamanic sounding, Overtone or Harmonic Singing), Drums, Tibetan and Himalayan Singing Bowls and Chimes, Gongs, Crystal Singing Bowls, Tuning Forks, Music, and Laughter. So, how can the average person use sound to improve their everyday lives? Here are some tips: Don’t bite your lip or hold your breath if you’re in pain — groan and make sounds to release it! Speak the truth with kindness and awareness. Sing often, whether you can carry a tune or not. Use your voice for self-healing and wellness: Tone a simple vowel sound like AH, OH, EE, add your intention (like peaceful, capable, confident, gracious) and sing for at least 3 minutes to shift your energy quickly and easily. Play music that feels good at least an hour a day — calming, energizing, peaceful. Pay attention to your sound environment, changing what you can, and harmonizing with those sounds you cannot change, by singing or playing music which is in harmony with it. Your thoughts are inaudible sounds and have a very powerful effect on you, so pay attention to them, and weed out the thoughts that don’t support you. Sound is at the heart of every creation myth, bringing spirit and intention into physical form, and it is an incredible tool for healing and manifestation. So explore and seek out experienced sound healers and healing music to create wellbeing, vital health and greater harmony in your life. a Kay Grace, CAEH, enjoys teaching the art and science of Sound Healing, and empowering people to access the unique qualities of their spirits to create lives of greater harmony and happiness. She has an established private practice offering Sound Healing Therapy and Energy Work since 2001, and has helped thousands of clients access the power of sound to relieve stress, reduce pain, and create deep healing on physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels. A published singer and songwriter, Kay is a member of International Sound Healers Association, ABMP, and is a valued faculty member of Normandale Community College in the Integrative Health Education Center, and offers a sound healing practitioner certificate program. words of wisdom by Nadine Penny
Don’t drown, swim! If you’ve been drowning in a sea of painful emotions, change your thinking this August. Align your thoughts with God/Good through prayer, empowering quotes and positive thinking and release detrimental emotions by journaling daily. Writing pushes the pain out of the body and onto the page, so you relax and feel able to cope. Finally, don’t look back! Keep the past in the past and embrace the good in today and the better in tomorrow. Follow these steps daily and though you might still feel up to your neck in it, you won’t feel you’re in over your head — which means you’ll be able to see where you’re going and swim to shore! a Nadine Penny attained her M.A. from the University of Denver in Counseling Psychology.
