FROM THE EDITOR
Let the sunshine in, let the sunshine in, oh, let it shine! by Tim Miejan t was early May and my wife and I were grieving. We had lost her father to cancer, and then, three weeks later, we lost our dog to cancer. I wandered around the house endlessly, and then I sat down to write. All my mind would see was the final hour of our pup’s life. He could no longer walk without assistance, so I carried Ghandi over to the park and across the soccer field. I sat him down so he could sniff a particularly high patch of grass, a place he loved to mark as his own. After a while, I picked him up and carried him back home. I fed him from a newly opened can of food, which he devoured, and he went to sleep on a soft blanket. The scene played over in my mind. His final minutes at the vet’s office. My wife and I crying, holding each other, standing in the parking lot near the car. It was if hope was obscured by clouds of fear and doubt. It felt like I was in a fog. I couldn’t see the light. The haze told me to sleep, and so I did. Then one day, several weeks later, I woke up. The haze was gone. It seemed as though I was standing in the bright sunshine after seeing nothing but rain. The mourning wasn’t completely over, but at least now I could breathe. I had to catch up on my emails, so I began to read. One in particular caught my attention. It reminded me that no one is alone. Not one of us. And what sets the universe in motion is our desire to make it so.
I
“Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents, meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamt would have come his way. “I learned a deep respect for one of Goethe’s couplets: Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it!” ~ William Hutchinson Murray The Scottish Himalayan Expedition (1951)
I sometimes forget that. I forget that legions of Divine beings have my back — and they have yours, too. I forget that we all work together to fashion a collective whole that benefits every single piece. I forget that this isn’t a universe of lack, but a universe of absolute potential. My intention is to remember that we’re all connected. And that when one of us hurts, the rest of us feel the pain and send our love. a Tim Miejan is editor and co-publisher of The Edge. HOLISTIC LIVING
We don’t really want to be happy…we want bliss by Sean Meshorer hat if you don’t really want to be happy? Most of us spend a good deal of our time pursuing happiness or at least pleasure. This strikes many of us as a perfectly obvious and natural thing to do. From the Declaration of Independence, which announces that it’s our “inalienable right” to “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness” to almost every nook and cranny of pop culture to virtually all contemporary self-help authors, few people appear to challenge the import of finding happiness. What if we’re wrong? What if happiness shouldn’t really be our goal? What if happiness by itself isn’t even worthwhile? Though we seldom think about it clearly, the reality is that happiness by itself isn’t at all what we really want, we only think that we do. Ask yourself this: If I could grant you “happiness” right now but it would come to you with the condition that life itself is meaningless, that there is no purpose in life other than being happy, would you feel satisfied? Or, what if I could grant you “happiness” but told you that you would never have access to any kind of enduring truth? Would, then, happiness still feel like a victory? The reality is that we don’t just want to be happy. We also want to know if life is meaningful and what our individual and specific purpose is within this framework of meaning. And on top of it all, we want to know that what we think, feel, believe and know corresponds to some kind of enduring truth about ourselves, humanity in general, and even the very Universe itself. Without all three things — happiness, meaning and truth — life feels incomplete at best.
W
our life goals
The good news is that there does exist something that encompasses all three of our life goals: bliss. Bliss is where happiness, meaning and truth converge. Everything — and I do mean everything — boils down to our (sometimes subconscious) pursuit of bliss. We pursue money or relationships because we think they’ll make us happy. We pursue our vocation, our hobbies, and our life’s passions because we feel they are deeply meaningful to us. We explore
science, religion, and philosophical inquiry because we want to know the truth of our existence. Bliss is the universal place that these intersect, where all questions are answered, where every fulfillment is attained. Finding bliss isn’t like most other goals we pursue. First and foremost, it’s a wholly internal state. This means that nothing outside of ourselves — and I do mean nothing — affects it or helps us experience it. Further from happiness
No amount of money, luxuries, sex, fame, beauty or power brings us any closer to finding it. Like so many aspects of life, bliss is not readily apparent to our senses. Because bliss is not an object or a thing, our faculties of sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell are not designed to detect it. In fact, the more time we spend pursuing these things, the further away from the true happiness of bliss we get. We have to start by looking within. But even just doing this is no guarantee of finding it. Let’s face it: many of us are messes inside. Our minds are spinning out of control; they’re filled with a cascade of negative thoughts, images, and feelings, none of which would ever be mistaken as blissful. As well, we often spend a good deal of our time reliving the past — usually something negative or traumatic that happened to us — or daydreaming about the future. We are seldom grounded in the Eternal Now. So even after we make the decision to turn within, we still have some digging to do before we find bliss. We must learn how to live more fully in the present moment and then how to better take control of our own minds. Then, using this new-found power, we must learn to slow down that countless stream of thoughts, images, and feelings bombarding us. Always here with us
Hiding just behind that torrential, out-of-control mind of ours lies the pure experience of bliss. It’s always here with us, even right now. We just don’t know it because we’re either distracted by looking outside ourselves or because there is too much noise and debris within, masking it, keeping us from seeing the potential hidden within us. The shift away from focusing on the external state of happiness and toward the internal state of bliss opens new horizons of possibility and potential. It reinforces our essentially spiritual nature while promising lasting solutions to our most fundamental problems. Above all, it’s the only genuine way to experience lasting happiness, find real meaning in our lives, and discover enduring truth. a Meet Sean Meshorer, author of The Bliss Experiment: Happiness is Good, Bliss is Better! on June 11 & 12 in the Twin Cities — at 6pm June 11 at Valley Booksellers, 217 N. Main St., Stillwater, and at 7pm June 12 at Bookcase on Lake Street, 607 E. Lake St., Wayzata, MN. For more information, please visit www.theblissexperiment.com Sean Meshorer, author of The Bliss Experiment: 28 Days To Personal Transformation, has a degree in Philosophy and Religious Studies from Stanford University. After graduation, for fifteen years, he lived in a yoga ashram and community in Northern California, where he received extensive instruction in meditation and spiritual practice. While living in the ashram, for the last nine years, he was also CEO of book publishing house and record label that specializes in Personal Development and Eastern Religion books and recordings. He is a certified meditation and yoga instructor and an ordained minister for a non-denominational organization that emphasizes the essential unity of all religions. DEVOTIONAL MUSIC
Bhakti Yoga the Yoga of Devotion
New wave of fans embrace Kirtan movement in the West; powerful community grows in the Midwest
N
by Colleen Buckman (Kalyani)
amasté! The deepest translation of this word means “the essence of me bows to the essence of you.” It is the common greeting in India, their version of “hello.” To me, this simple greeting is such a perfect reflection of the birthplace of Yoga. For those of you who know yoga to be exercise or stress relief, I would love to introduce you to the deeper, more foundational aspects of this ancient tradition. “Yoga” is a Sanskrit word that means “yoke” or “union.” The power of yoga is the 8 limbs that are meant to bring us into alignment with our deepest potential. Asana, better known as body postures, is only 1 of the 8 limbs of yoga.

HOLISTIC LIVING
In the West, we tend to think of yoga as Asana. But there is so much more to be known about this ancient way of experiencing life. There is also yama: universal morality, niyama: personal observances, pranayama: breathing exercises and control of prana (life force), pratyahara: control of the senses, dharana: concentration and cultivating inner perceptual awareness, dhyana: devotion, meditation on the divine and Samadhi: union with the divine. For now, we are going to focus on dhyana: devotion. Another Sanskrit term for this practice is Bhakti yoga. Bhakti yoga simply means devotion to the divine. It can take many forms: prayer, meditation, service, singing, etc. Kirtan is a form of Bhakti yoga. Kirtan is a folk music movement that was birthed out of India, where people repeat various names of the divine in order to praise, clear and elevate their consciousness. Sanskrit is the primary language used in Kirtan. Sanskrit is an ancient language, (over 4,000 years old), and those tones and vibrations connect our hearts and brains to primal, soothing, organic sensations. In the West, the Kirtan movement has recently been burgeoning. Over the past 15-20 years, performers like Krishna Das, Jai Uttal and Deva Premal have introduced a wave of yogis and fans to this deeply inspired music. Originally, Paramahansa Yogananda, George Harrison and The Beatles brought this music from India to Western cultures, weaving popular music together with sacred text. And now there are festivals, yoga retreats and community gatherings in numerous countries that surround this ancient practice. The real intent of this devotion is to lose your mental ramblings inside of music, music that happens to be repeatedly realigning your heart and mind to aspects of the divine. It is a powerful practice that can take shape in any style of music. There is rock and roll kirtan, reggae kirtan, folk kirtan — the list goes on. The common thread is the intent to collectively “lose our minds” in conscious musical vibrations, and to gain our hearts, joy and sanity in return. It is common for a bhajan (song) to last anywhere from 15- 20 minutes and for the rhythm to pick up speed and intensity as the crowd sings

Colleen Buckman (Kalyani) along. Kirtan is quite ecstatic, yet, the arrival point is really in the meditation that occurs after each song. Everyone’s minds are clear, and the depth of collective internal and external silence is palpable. For those of you who feel like you have never experienced kirtan, you have! It has been written into songs like “Across the Universe” by The Beatles or “My Sweet Lord” by George Harrison. And, recently, younger musicians like Trevor Hall are writing kirtan into their choruses. This ancient practice is definitely gaining modern momentum. Perhaps because of its timeless ability to connect us with the divine. In the Midwest, there is a powerful Kirtan community. The Twin Cities has several strong kirtan bands that are leading kirtans weekly at yoga studios and music venues throughout the metro area. This community really took root over the past 10 years with bands like the Shakti Chant Band doing regular kirtans at One Yoga. Now, there are at least a dozen bands, which include Sitara & Kalyani with Pavan Kumar, Kirtan Path, Om Bolo, Kirtan Collective and the Wild Moon Bhaktas. This year saw many of these bands sharing their gifts and raising their voices at the 3rd Annual Twin Cities Kirtan Festival in March. And this summer the Midwest will host the first annual BhaktiFest Midwest in Madison, WI on June 29-July 1, with headliners Krishna Das, Jai Uttal and Dave Stringer. The Twin Cities own Kirtan Path and Sitara & Kalyani with Pavan Kumar will be joining the lineup to co-create a truly Midwest BhaktiFest. So, come and experience what it is to “Be in the Bhav,” and enjoy this ancient communal practice of Bhakti yoga. a For information about BhaktiFest Midwest go to www.bhaktifest.com. HEALING JOURNEY
Yoga Aid World Challenge to benefit charities worldwide
Y
oga Aid Foundation, an international nonprofit that raises funds for charities through philanthropic yoga events, recently announced that it will host the first-ever, one day, around-theworld yoga tour benefiting 15 humanitarianbased charities internationally. On September 9, The Yoga Aid World Challenge will unite yogis around the globe in an effort to raise $1 million to benefit charitable organizations. Starting in Sydney, Australia, the 24-hour yoga relay will travel around the world and end at sundown in Los Angeles. The Yoga Aid challenge will bring together renowned teachers, studios and students in over 20 countries, creating a united community, while focusing on raising money for charity. During these events, yoga participants will embark on a two-hour yoga practice as a way to celebrate the funds they raised for the charity partners. Unlike any other event, all expenses are supported privately – ensuring 100 percent of donations go straight to the charities. The Yoga Aid Challenge supports select charities in each country. This year, the Yoga Aid Challenge has chosen four charities that all embrace the power of yoga to support the USA leg of the world relay: Off the Mat, Into the World, The Africa Yoga Project, Ganga Action, and Yoga Across America. “The Yoga Aid family is calling on the entire international yoga community to band together and help us host at least 200 events in 20 countries and raise more than $1 million for charities during the 2012 Challenge,” said Clive Mayhew, co-founder of Yoga Aid Foundation. Those individuals who are inspired by The Yoga Aid World Challenge are encouraged to sign up and become Community Ambassadors. Ambassadors bring The Yoga Aid World Challenge home to their communities by creating, organizing and hosting a local event, whether the venue be a nearby park, studio or community center. Furthering Yoga Aid’s commitment to giving, the Foundation will provide all of the necessary event tools and funding for the creation of any local event scheduled during the 24-hour global yogarelay on September 9. “The Yoga Aid World Challenge is more than just our way to give back – it is an international charitable platform uniting all yogis for the greater good and activating a sense of joy in giving back to the world,” said Eriko Kinoshita, co-founder of Yoga Aid Foundation. Cancer: the Disingenuous Disease
Interference to the nervous system leads to presence of tumor by Cheryl Hiltibran FOURTH IN A SERIES
I
t’s been six months since my cancer diagnosis. I’ve been over mountains of information and deep in the valley of decision-making while continuously bushwhacking through cancer cure offerings and jumping over streams of confusion and doubt; sometimes I broke through the thick tangles into a clearing where the light of confirmation and affirmation encircled me. Besides finding a nutritional support oasis in Dr. Paul Westby of Wellspring Chiropractic (described in the April 2012 Edge), I found another oasis to help clear away the malignant growth in my left breast called Stage One Invasive Ductal Carcinoma. Stage One means the tumor is localized to one part of the body; it was also growing at a slow-to-moderate rate. This information was important; it allowed me the benefit of time. Time to gather information, to reflect, to make decisions consistent with who I am. The body is designed to be selfrecovering — it heals colds, flu, cuts and sprains; my right knee cartilage healed without surgery (described in the February 2012 Edge). However, with cancer being potentially life-threatening, there was greater urgency to support my body to return to health and remove the rogue cells. Had the cancer not been Stage One, I may have taken a more aggressive approach.
I’ve heard it takes a village to raise a child. I now believe it takes a village to heal someone with life-threatening illness. In addition to excellent nutritional support, I continued my search. Synchronistically, a door opened when I met Dr. Nick Froehling of Vitality Chiropractic. After sharing with him about my cancer, he graciously offered to do a body scan analysis on me. The fours scans that “Dr. Nick” used were: • Posture analysis • Surface Electromyography (EMG) to test motor nerve function • Rolling Thermal scan to test autonomic nerve functions • Spinal X-ray (though hesitant to subject myself to additional radiation, I’m glad I did). In Wayzata since 2007, Dr. Nick has received several awards for outstanding chiropractic performance: 2007 Top Wellness Provider in the World (with Discover Chiropractic Team) and 2009 On Purpose Chiropractor of the Month. I’ve enjoyed his free evening classes about Mental Wellness, Burst Training and Nutritional Wellness. Nervous System Dis-ease
The scans showed me part of the reason why a tumor had formed in my left breast: nervous system interference in that area, how the forward tilt of my head produced stress to the thoracic spinal area, neck and
upper back; this had been a longstanding problem. Thermography showed muscle and nerve tension radiating from my spine into my left chest and breast area. The X-ray showed subluxation (misalignment) in the spine impeding nervous system function, which leads to dis-ease in organ function. Eureka! The cancer took the path of least resistance and got its “toehold” in my breast. Weekly visits to Dr. Nick have improved my posture, increased my flexibility and reduced muscle tension, where previously I had felt much stiffness and pain in my neck, jaws, shoulders, arms and upper chest. Each week, I look forward to reading Dr. Nick’s “Thot” for the week focusing on health, diet, exercise or research to make healthier lifestyle decisions. One that is dear to my heart (or shall I say, my breast) is his Breast Cancer Prevention “Thot” [read at: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/ articles/archive/2010/04/13/at-leastonethird-of-breast-cancer-cases-areavoidable.aspx]. Environmental Stressors — Negative and Positive
Dr. Nick also shared information about the philosophy of Chiropractic care, which has influenced me to seek more positive stressors in my life. B. J. Palmer, the developer of scientific Chiropractic methods, believed that human beings are 100 percent innately intelligent, and when the nervous system is operating to its fullest capacity it will maintain optimal health for us. However, when the nervous system experiences interference (disruption), our bodies will eventually experience dis-ease. Palmer identified three types of environmental stressors: physical, chemical and mental. A stressor creates
“
…With cancer being potentially life-threatening, there was greater urgency to support my body to return to health and remove the rogue cells. Had the cancer not been Stage One, I may have taken a more aggressive approach.” a “force” that acts upon the body. Depending on what the stressor is, it will either have a negative or a positive influence on the body. Negative stressors disrupt proper body function. Muscles get tight, leading to restricted blood flow, and this can lead to cell damage. Positive stressors maintain or improve body function. Negative physical stressors include accidents, prolonged sitting or repetitive actions and injury. Negative chemical stressors include poor diet, all drugs (even prescription), smoking, living near power lines, and toxic chemicals used in the yard, home or on the body. Negative mental stressors include unrealistic expectations, demanding deadlines, perfectionism, guilt, shame, jealousy and negative attitudes. To heal damage caused by accumulated stress, it is necessary to eliminate negative environmental stressors and incorporate more positive stressors. The stressors that we want in our lives are positive environmental stressors: • Positive physical stressors: Exercise, Stretching, Chiropractic care, being in nature, rest and sleep. • Positive chemical stressors: Organic
fruits and vegetables, pure water, good bacteria and good germs. • Positive mental stressors: Prayer, journaling, pets, being with loved ones who have your best interest at heart, affirmations, realistic goals, and meditation. These positive stressors serve to maintain and strengthen our bodies. What others can you think of to add to your life? The cumulative effect of regular chiropractic adjustments has taken the strain off my nervous system; my body spends less time compensating for negative stress. My innate intelligence is turning its attention to repairing my body to a new level of health. “I seek to find out what is cutting off the life force and then make adjustments that eliminate the interference, which allows life to flow freely from the nervous system to the entire body,” says Dr. Nick. It is so simple, and yet requires positive vigilance for me and my village. In parting, he reminded me: “As the body heals, it is natural for the body to detoxify; this may include coughing, flushing, sweating, vomiting, diarrhea, hot flashes, and fever.” I, too, had experienced detoxification — it felt more like bushwhacking than lounging at the oasis — but that is a topic for another day. a Listen to Edge contributor Cheryl Hiltibran describe her journey on the archived Edge Talk Radio program “Innerviews” with Cathryn Taylor with this link: http://tiny.cc/ az5ucw/ Cheryl Hiltibran is a life coach, natural intuit and healer who assists others in being fully integrated and aligned. TRANSFORMATION
Michael Tellinger returns to Cities to speak on vanished peoples, evolution of consciousness by staff reports ichael Tellinger, a South African author, scientist and researcher, will return to the Twin Cities for the third consecutive year, appearing at Lake Harriet Spiritual Community from 7-10 p.m. Monday, June 18, as part of his 2012 North American tour. “My presentation has taken on a whole new slant that blends the harsh lines of separation into a cohesive story of humankind,” Tellinger says, “our physical being connected to our spiritual higher self and how the awakening and understanding of our origins is helping us to free ourselves from the tyranny imposed on our species.” Tellinger earned international acclaim as an expert on vanished civilizations of southern Africa, in his books, Slave Species of God, Adam’s Calendar, and Temples of the African Gods. Although scholars maintain the first civilizations on Earth emerged in Sumer 6,000 years ago, new archeological and scientific discoveries made by Tellinger and a team of leading scientists show that the Sumerians and even the Egyptians inherited all their knowledge from an earlier civilization that lived at the southern tip of Africa more than 200,000 years ago — mining gold. “These were also the first people who carved the Horus bird, the first Sphinx, built the first pyramid, and built an accurate stone calendar called Adam’s Calendar,” Tellinger says. “Adam’s Calendar is the flagship among millions of circular stone ruins, ancient roads, agricultural terraces, and thousands of ancient mines left behind by this vanished civilization we now call The First People.” Tellinger presents evidence (that) this civilization had an astute knowledge of the laws of nature, sacred geometry, and the generation of free energy from Mother Earth using the power of sound and frequency as a source of their energy. “The discoveries and research keep expanding constantly and exponentially,” he says. “It is amazing how everything is starting to fold into one large pond of connected information. Genetic research shows us how we are all connected to the morphogenic field and how every atom in the universe is connected to us at the quantum level, pointing to Unity

Consciousness as the backdrop for all of the stuff we see and cannot see. It is now clear that we cannot separate anything from anything else and it is a direct indication of our origins from a unified field of source consciousness. “The more we push the boundaries of science, the more we come to understand the universal mind –the creative source of all things in the universe. Who is God? What is the divine creator? How does it all fit together? Quantum physics is a gift from the divine to allow humanity to find its way back to source — back to unity — from a deeply divided species — not only on Earth but in the entire universe.” In addition to his pioneering work on the origins of humankind, Tellinger is expanding his scope to include economics and politics. “My Constitutional Court case against Standard Bank, the South African Reserve Bank, and the Minister of Finance is a real breakthrough,” he says. “After more than a year and a half in the Supreme Court, I have been given permission to petition the Constitutional Court of South Africa in an attempt to change the way banks operate.” When asked why he is involved in legal action against the banks, Tellinger responds, “It is quite simple. The same group of beings that caused our physical and spiritual enslavement on this beautiful planet are the same beings that have systematically created the socio-economic system based on money that has enslaved humanity, using money and the global banking elite to take virtually complete control of our lives. “It is therefore crucial that we become completely aware of our origins, the mystery of ancient civilizations and the road that has brought us to this point, where rapid enlightenment and rise of consciousness is changing our world and our reality on a daily basis. We can learn from those early humans in our search for a harmonious, unified world, with abundance for all.” Tellinger remains an optimist. “There is indeed a very bright light at the end of the gloomy tunnel of our daily misery – all we have to do is embrace it. In my presentation, I will also expand on the finer points of UBUNTU Contributionism as we make a transition into a New World without money, in a New Age where everyone’s talents are utilized to contribute to the greater benefit of all in their community.” a

COURAGE
The Great Wave of Change What will it take to keep pushing on through the challenges we face? by Moriah Marston & the Tibetan Editor’s note: This is an excerpt from Making the Shift: Field Guide to the Emerging Consciousness, Volume 1
P
owerful universal energies are pushing us to the brink of assurance as we encounter the Great Wave of Change that is turning everything topsey turvey. There’s unprecedented uncertainty in the global economy, politics, religions, health — everything. It’s so tempting to hide under the covers and postpone the intense karmic demands of this Shift of the Ages. Are you brave? Do you courageously meet life’s challenges without batting an eye? Or are you the lion in Wizard of Oz who trembles in fear, longing for the instinct of courage that grants us the heart to face each day. How do we boldly open to the moment when instinct exclaims: “Run for the hills?” Current transformational forces leave no stone unturned. There’s no place to hide. We need to drum up the gumption to go forward into this vibrational blizzard, face the unknown and stay open to the cosmic line of fire illuminating our soul’s destiny. We need to ask ourselves, “What areas of life are currently demanding an act of courage?” Preparation time has run out. Now is the moment to evoke the gritty determination to meet these challenges. Postponement only shrinks self-esteem. Courage begets confidence, not the other way around. Courage springs from the call of the soul that fills us with the passion to believe in ourselves and to take a stand without crumbling. How can we find the guts to follow our soul? It can be so painful to chicken out. We fall into a pile of shame while longing for the valor to step up to the plate. People who climb Mt. Everest, compete in the Olympics, perform in Carnegie Hall, rescue others from a burning building are the brave ones — not us! We long for their grit. But overt acts of bravery aren’t the only barometers of courage. It also takes pluck to leave a stagnant career loaded

with benefits, be honest with others, broadcast to the world our true identity and confront parents, sometimes to even get up in the morning. To abdicate responsibility for our own boldness, we project courage onto others, assuming they are naturally lionhearted. It’s tempting to hide by identifying ourselves as fraidy-cats, but Divine Dauntlessness is equally available to all. Courage develops through practice. Everyone is spiritually mandated to draw from the sacred internal place where Spirit ignites the spunk needed to move to the front lines of full exposure to ourselves, others, and Source. Courage reflects the commitment to be authentic, to extend ourselves, take risks, break away, follow our dreams, move in new directions, name our feelings, approach our pain, keep the faith, and accept ourselves. Always invoked in times of dread, acts of courage are never easy. Boldness does not indicate a lack of fear, but rather a willingness to move through it and out the other side. We can reference previous audacious feats as reminders of our capacity for bravery. Even the most timid make acts of courage, however subtle. Spirit applauds us for not capitulating to the churning stomach, cold feet, sweats, spiking anxiety and dread that floods us as we approach the Chamber of Fortitude. To identify ourselves as a coward implants the notion that we don’t have what it takes to meet our destiny. Yet, divinely designed to evolve the soul, we are blueprinted to handle all karmic challenges. To reference ourselves as spineless often causes us to forget, or
at least discount, any prior moments of valor. We must take credit for all acts of courage. They form the foundation to take the heroic next step. What is the line between courage and recklessness? The need for courage persists in spite of our resistance. Devoid of discernment, recklessness is a blind response that overrides and denies the true danger of the moment. Illusions of being invincible don’t really build backbone, but rather invite disaster. Bravado is not bravery. True courage springs from the acceptance and integration of our vulnerability. Some of us mercilessly raise the bar by relentlessly challenging ourselves; we push to the front with no respite as we discount previous heroic acts as inconsequential to the next peril being conquered. We can’t keep pumping up the courage needed to ruthlessly out dare ourselves. The psyche and adrenal glands need balance; they need respite, intermission, regrouping, down time, ease, and comfort. Maybe we have spent many lifetimes riding the adrenaline rush of developing courage and now need to recuperate by nestling into the safe zone’s cushiness. Others, chronically skittish, may be mandated to focus this lifetime on becoming spunky and resisting the impulse to flee. Internal guidance indicates whether we are burning out adrenal glands or stagnating in a milksop bog. To force ourselves to override sensitivities, deep wounds and the needs of our inner child in order to satisfy ambitious agendas is a cruel, self-abusive form of courage that creates a brutal internal boot camp. We must carefully assess the needs of our soul. Sometimes it takes courage to give ourselves permission to retreat, wait, rest, and heal. Timing is everything. Self-judgments of cowardice only hurt the soul. To override ourselves is not bravery but rather a lack of selfacceptance. We need to compassionately embrace and learn from the cowardly lion within rather than judge and slay it with shame. Everyone has a pocket of cowardice that represents parts of the soul traumatized in childhood and previous lifetimes. This timidity provides an alchemical counterpart to our Gallant Knighthood. It teaches humility, vulnerability, sensitivity, and tenderness toward injured places that
need safeguarding from courage’s overriding gusto. Many of us are going through a profound healing crisis as the old self collides with the emerging empowered self. To move in the direction of complete soul health, we need courage to create new patterns that propel us beyond the comfort zone of stifling coping mechanisms that buffered and protected us in the past. Our healing eventually brings us to the juncture where we must bravely express the new self and function in ways that previously felt dangerous to our inner child. Imagine life without courage. We would never explore new frontiers, internal and external. Our world would shrink, our selfconfidence would evaporate, and self-respect would dwindle as the voices of danger encroach in all parts of our lives, eager to feed on spinelessness. Courage is developed by saying “yes” to the immediacy of the moment — no more preparation time, and by remembering that we have all the resources needed to meet every challenge. We call upon the Mountain of Fortitude within, everyone’s birthright that pumps its fire into our system as it burns away the sticky web of fear that enshrouds the soul. We become keenly focused and listen to our heart’s guidance; we do not look back. The heart, center of courage, is then stimulated to flow its gallant energy. Every courageous moment, intensely meaningful for the soul, ripples through the aura and heals all previous moments of cowardice. We discover our noble great-heartedness and the world is ours. The Tibetan boldly approaches, filled with the courage to care so deeply about humankind. He teaches: “The New Cosmic Day is compelling humankind to release cowardice and to bravely undergo radical change. Evolution requires the soul to open in the face of the unknown. Courage is essential to this process. “All acts of courage arise from a commitment to self’s unforeseeable emerging truth. Everyone is required to develop courage without lingering in guardedness. This is not the time to be a quitter. Courage evokes a core passion that defines the soul. To put the soul on the line stimulates the past-life memories of danger that instigated a collapse into a withering cage of diminishment, thus curtailing soul’s magnitude. “Source has bestowed upon all of humanity a bank account of valor that can be tapped whenever needed. If not utilized, this account fades into the unconscious and self feels dangerously exposed to the Path with no resources. But humankind’s birthright of intrepid mettle springs forth immediately when consciously invoked. “Release the illusion that self is too fainthearted to access the courage needed to face the momentousness of today’s changes. The
“
The New Cosmic Day is compelling humankind to release cowardice and to bravely undergo radical change. Evolution requires the soul to open in the face of the unknown. Courage is essential to this process.” Spirit of Courage, emanating from the spirit plane, is divinely mandated to catalyze the fire in the soul needed to embrace its mystery and ultimately discover there is no danger in the Universe. The soul references this wisdom when resolutely moving forth through the illusion of precariousness, forearmed with the core safety inherent in Source’s Love for self. “Present potent energies afford tremendous opportunities to practice courage. Humankind is being called to dare challenge habitual beliefs that are obsolete and irrelevant to the new consciousness, take risks that serve the soul, radically transform, release all defenses, hold an open mind, display self’s magnitude, be a truth sayer, follow self’s visions, and trust the heart. The rewards of this great discipline of courage are freedom from fear, empowerment, deepened self-worth, the ability to let go, increased authority, adventure, and transformation. “The Masters and Angelic Force align with every stance of courage taken by humankind. No one is ever alone or unsupported in their exposure to life’s challenges. Students’ willingness and ability to commit acts of courage stem from a deep awareness of the Great Presence of all those who help, support and make possible the journey by lending their mighty energy to self’s force field. “The fusion of spirit with human establishes the Platform of Courage that expands the aura. When self feels large, fear dissolves. Humankind discovers how easy it is to be brave when great forces are augmenting self’s fortitude. Borrow courage from the Masters until self feels it spring from within. Identify self as the hero and know that the quest for the Holy Grail awaits all who adventure forth.” a Moriah Marston is an author, metaphysical teacher, and founder of the School of the Golden Discs, a center for expanding consciousness. HOW I USE MY INTUITION The featured topic in 2012 relates to your experience…how you felt, what you learned… the growth and how it changed the course of your life. This month: How I Use My Intuition. Next month: From the Mystic: Experiences I’ll Never Forget (submit by June 9)
Intuition: My father and pheasants by Leah Skurdal ometimes my intuition informs me of the next right step through a knowingness, through a still, small voice in my heart or through a physical sensation. Sometimes intuition shows up in odd, synchronistic ways. Pheasant roosters, which you don’t see every day living in the city, have served as my intuitive hits in the past month. Pheasants have a history in my family. At a Park & Recreation “Pet Day” event when I was 11 years old, I won the “Most Unusual Pet” award for my pheasant chick in a shoebox. My dad was raising pheasants in our garage, which he later released on Grandpa’s farm to increase the pheasant population in Western Minnesota. Over the years, I enjoyed many delicious pheasant dinners. It seemed natural to request that a pheasant be etched onto my dad’s grave marker and to send memorial gifts celebrating Dad’s life to the local chapter of Pheasants Forever. A few days after my dad’s funeral, my mom and I made a last tour around the cemetery before leaving town. As I pulled into the circle drive, from my driver’s side window, I caught a glimpse of a pheasant rooster as it disappeared under the bushes. My intuition told me immediately that my dad was there with us saying goodbye. A month later, on a Saturday morning, we held a memorial breakfast for dad’s friends who could not attend the funeral. Whenever Dad had come to town, he had breakfast with his friends. On the sunny morning of the breakfast, when I walked into the restaurant, my eyes immediately landed on a stuffed

pheasant rooster in a case by the front door. I smiled, knowing that Dad was having Saturday morning breakfast with his friends again. On my birthday, a week later, I had a moment of sadness as I tallied up the birthday wishes from family members, realizing that I wouldn’t be getting the regular birthday phone call from my dad. An hour later, as I was driving along Lake Drive, in a combination businessresidential area, a pheasant rooster flew across the road in front of my car. I acknowledged that as my birthday blessing from Dad. The more you notice synchronistic events, the more they show up in your life. I am looking forward to continuing to see pheasants in unexpected places at meaningful times as a message from my father. I especially miss my Dad on Sundays, when I usually talked to him on the phone. My intuitive sense – and all the pheasants — tell me he is still around. And that gives me comfort and joy. a Leah Skurdal teaches Intuitive Development classes, and offers Intuitive Massage and Energy Healing at The Wellness Circle, in Lino Lakes, MN. Experience leads to intuitive confidence, public readings “The truth is more important than the facts.” — Frank Lloyd Wright by Carol McCormick ntuition guides my daily path. I embrace intuition because of the good things it has brought into my life. When my intuition says I must go here, do something or meet a person, I just do it. There is always a good reason, either obvious at the time or when looking back. Tuning into intuition can feel unsettling, impractical, irrational and improbable. You don’t always quickly understand what information comes. It comes in paradoxical ways — a flash of lightning, a dreamy wispy cloud, a voice, a feeling, an image — and sometimes you don’t like its message. To follow it, you feel vulnerable and risk appearing foolish. Being below the threshold of normal human third-dimensional perception, it sometimes feels like you are only imagining things. Yet following “what rings true” can bring startling, powerful, profound, and miraculous results. When I see a book, sometimes I know immediately I need to read it. Or the book falls literally from the shelves in front of me. A book’s energy field frequency is decided by content and author’s intent. Like attracts like. Deeper levels of me connect vibrationally with that book. Once I attended a meeting to see a particular woman. She didn’t come, but my intuitive sense to be there led me to an experience by the presenter, Barbara Shipka, who asked us to pick a piece of the jewelry she had created and wear it during her talk. My eyes were immediately drawn to a long string of beads with light glowing around them. My rational mind directed me to look at all the pieces displayed on four large tables. I chose that glowing one. At the end of her presentation, Barbara told each of us the purpose behind our chosen piece of jewelry. Mine was a “Celestial Ray of Healing and Vitality radiating for the gift of being alive!” My head told me that I could not afford it. Yet, my heart so longed to have it. My intuition won out. At that time I was depressed. Instead of doing my storytelling business, I was working in a Human Resources department just to make money. I wore that necklace to work every day for a week, then carried it in my purse or had it visible on my desk. Instead of emailing or phoning me, employees began coming to my office to talk. When they were very upset or ill, I would invite them to try on or borrow my long rope of beautiful stones. I
I
“
(Information) comes in paradoxical ways — a flash of lightning, a dreamy wispy cloud, a voice, a feeling, an image.” think because of that necklace, they came in person and more readily shared their personal burdens. Instead of just entering payroll info, I became a paid story listener. After that I gained more confidence in doing psychic readings. When people ask for a psychic reading to help clarify their next steps, these are some things I do to access my intuition: • Holding hands with them, I speak a prayer of gratitude intending highest good for them and all. This invokes Divine Guidance and connects our vibrational energy fields. • I ask them to think of a precise question as they shuffle divination cards. This aligns the cards with the frequencies within their auric field and magnetizes the layout. • Like the aperture of a camera, I consciously open my Third Eye to take in more vibrational information where images are tinged in blue light. • To connect soul to soul I soften the focus of my physical eyes to become more loving windows to that person’s soul rather than their physical visual appearance. • I close my eyes to stimulate the slower sensory alpha brain waves. • I receive intuitive information via pictures, feelings, and words. Sometimes a deceased or discarnate being shows up to give information. The human energy-field holds the information of not only what is happening in the moment, but also the possibilities and probabilities that are likely to follow unless we change our thoughts and emotions — our vibrational state. There is no future as such, only the potential of this moment, and that is what I read. Actually rather than reading the cards, I am reading the person. The responsibility for what action they will take based upon my reading lies with the person, for it is their energy and their choice. a Carol McCormick is a professional storyteller and psychic living in Plymouth, MN. SACRED TRAVEL
Sacred journeys transform, awaken Visiting people of the Andes offers glimpse into culture with transformative tools to assist us ‘modern’ people by Holly Gray Schuck First of a two-part series
I
f someone asks me why I travel, especially to sacred sites such as Machu Picchu in Peru, or the Andes Mountains of Chile, I would have to say that it is my experience that these places of incredible earth energies can change us. They alter our perspective, not only because of an experience of a different culture, but because we look at our life and our personality and recognize much of who we think we are is just societal conditioning and habit. We are a “domesticated” species, often never knowing our selka nature— the word in the Quechua language of the Andes which means “undomesticated” or wild, or our essential nature. In traveling to another culture, our fears and obligations, our masks that we wear daily, fall away. Stepping away from what we call our everyday reality, we find that our daily distractions are what keep us from really knowing ourselves and our own spiritual truths, as we do not take the time to be human “beings” rather than human “doings.” It takes courage, that leap of faith, sometimes called the leap of the Jaguar, the shamanic animal totem, or luminous being of Light, that models for us, how to create a new life, with riches of the Spirit not known to those who never attempt to fly. It takes courage to plan

and execute a sacred journey, whether that journey is an interior one, such as a vision quest, or one to Machu Picchu, one of the 7 wonders of the world due to its mystical and other-worldly beauty. Yet, the rewards of such journeys are the vantage points of the overall perspective of one’s life that give meaning and purpose to our earth walk. These journeys can bring incredible insights and gifts of the spirit that can lead to desired life changes and greater meaning and clarity of purpose. We return with a sense of greater joy and peace, in gratitude for our own life, or we make more easily, the changes we desire. The Andean peoples of South America still follow the ways of their ancestors. Despite the fact that most small towns now have at least one computer, and satellite towers provide cell phone and TV coverage, people there live close to the land, and they practice cultural traditions, as well as dress in
their native clothes, much as they have done for hundreds of years. Most people profess to be Catholic, yet ancient traditions are honored and celebrated—the Pachamama has become the Virgin, and ancestor worship is alive in the honoring of the saints; traditional seasonal festivals are now celebrated with a Catholic holiday, but celebrated in much the same fashion as their ancestors. The people’s metaphors and philosophy of life all revolve around the concept of ainy — a spiritual code of ethics and living one’s life in reciprocity, with all of nature. For the Andean peoples, ainy means that as they honor the Pachamama, the cosmos, the Apus, or mountain spirits, the stars, waters, rocks, trees — and indeed, all of life, including people everywhere. It is a simple, yet profound, belief that simply means giving and receiving in equal measure. One does not take more than one needs. When giving honor and gifts to the Mother or Pachamama, She gives back to us, with even greater abundance. One ceremony that is central to the people is the despachio, which is a ceremony of offering gratitude to the Earth Mother, Pachamama, in the form of foods from the earth and other treasures, such as sea shells and flower petal, fragrance and candies, all wrapped in gift paper and tied with a string, which is then burned in a small ceremonial fire. When we visit and interact with this beautiful and ancient culture, we realize that these ancient beliefs and customs are a set of spiritually transformative tools that have great relevance for those of us living in a “modern,” yet often spiritually bereft, society. To awaken to our highest potential, it is important to
NUTRITION utilize these tools such as the concept of ainy, to resolve conflicts, and give greater meaning to our lives today. In Andean tradition, there is no separation between the physical and spiritual worlds. The Q’ero are the living descendants of this pre-Inkan wisdom and the keepers of these mystery teachings. The Q’ero Nation represents the last of the direct cultural and spiritual descendants of the Inkan Empire. In 1949, Oscar Nunez del Prado, who grandfather “discovered” the Amazon River, heard some men talking in Cuzco. He realized they were speaking a “high Quechua,” a language, that he, as a university professor, had thought was dead—vanished from the planet. By 1953, National Geographic gave the world the first pictures of the Q’ero people. And in 1955, the missionaries had found the last of the six Q’ero villages of these peoples who had hidden themselves for more than 500 years, since the Spanish Conquest. They came down from their villages at 14,000 feet to astound the world with their mystery teachings that they had preserved for future generations, not only for Peruvian peoples, but people everywhere. The Q’ero believe we are in a time of great upheaval , a time of Pachacouti (pacha = time or mother, and couti = to turn over). They also believe that we, the rainbow race of North American, are to merge our technological world with the spiritual heart of the Andes— thus the prophesy of the Eagle and Condor uniting to save the world’s peoples. Peru is said to be the portal through which the rays of the New Light, after 500 years of darkness, will begin to awaken humanity to a new consciousness. a Holly Gray Schuck is an initiated 4th level shaman/priest in the Andean tradition, who now transmits the Rites of Passage called the Munay-Ki. She has trained, since 1989 with South American teachers such as: Don Manuel Quispe, Alberto Villoldo, Americo Yabar and Juan Nunez del Prado of Peru, and for 16 years with Luzclara of Chile, after 10 years training with her North American native teachers. A Gluten-free, Dairy-free Whole Food Recipe
Salmon Salad by Maggie Christopher
This recipe makes a quick lunch and provides high-quality protein and omega 3 healthy fats. Some co-ops sell a piece of cooked, smoked salmon which makes this recipe less than 5 minutes to prepare. The quantities noted below are just a guideline; you can be flexible depending on your preference. Ingredients 1¼ cups of cooked, smoked salmon 2 TBS Grapeseed Vegenaise* ¼ tsp dill ½ of a lemon, squeezed 1/8 cup red onions, diced 1 stalk celery, diced Directions Break up the salmon with a fork and add remaining ingredients. Mix well. Adjust ingredients to taste. Store in the refrigerator. (Grapeseed Vegenaise is a non-dairy, high-quality mayonnaise sold at a health food store in the cold section. It tastes great and has the consistency of other mayos. This salad is tasty scooped up with whole grain crackers or eaten over a bed of spinach.) HEALING WITH LIGHT
Esogetics heals with color, light, crystal by SchaOn Blodgett he use of color, light and crystals in healing is not a new idea. Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Babylonians (probably even the ancient Sumerians) and other ancient civilizations had great temples dedicated specifically for this type of healing. Almost every major religion and spiritual practice today talks about the light within, the light above, being connected to the light, and instills that the path to true health and life is via light. Today, this form of healing has been revitalized due to our ability to control and reproduce specifically the direction, intensity and frequency (color) of the light, and then combine that with it being more portable than ever before. During the last 40+ years, there have also been new scientific breakthroughs and understanding via biophysics and through the work of Dr. Fritz-Albert Popp, among others. We are seeing through modern sciences that the body’s primary form of communication may be with light (biophotons), and researcher report that cells are storing, transmitting, understanding, and responding to light! This does not come as a surprise in the holistic health fields or deep spiritual communities, for as we have been taught, everything is vibration/frequency = information, and hence vibration/frequency is within light, sound, color, and well,
T
everything! One of the most wellrounded versions of color light therapy today, in my belief, is Esogetics (Colorpuncture), developed by Peter Mandel more than 40 years ago. It compounds upon the early works of Augustus Pleasanton and Edwin Babbitt and combines it with many of the naturopathic and hermetic philosophies and principles found around the globe, as well as modern scientific advancements. The name Esogetics comes from a combination of the two words: esoteric (meaning the old world knowledge) and energetic (meaning the new, scientific knowledge of our age). In Esogetics, you can find traces of over 200 different holistic healing modalities. Within Esogetics there are two primary paths of healing therapies — the Esogetics Light Therapies (Colorpuncture, Transmitter Relays, I Ging,
Ophthalmotropic Genetic Therapy – OGT, Infrared Pain Therapies, and others) and the Esogetics Crystal Therapies (Tree of Life, Bardo, Karma, Crystal Vision, Dream & Love Disc therapies, and many more). With the light therapies, we utilize specific colors (frequency) of light on precise points of the body (acupuncture/pressure points, reflexology zones and other energetically sensitive points) and the contained microsystems (skull somatotopy, auricular, Putkammer segments, facial physiognomy and others) to help balance the yin/yang energy flows. The therapy also provides new, correcting information that causes a cascading reaction within the mind, body and soul, which then allows for the core “conflict” to resolve. In the crystal therapies, we use a combination of specifically cut and colored Swarovski crystals inlaid with sacred geometry. We have seen through the crystal therapies, with the help of Professor Popp, that these crystals interact with the biophotonic communication of the being and are believed to create a reorganization of the information contained within, allowing for clearer, more pure communication. This then allows for a profound transformation on all levels of the being. Science reveals more everyday about light’s potential to heal. The University of Wisconsin-Madison has used
infrared light to help cancer patients and red LED light for anti-aging and for infants with jaundice. An infrared pain study on chronic pain has been done at Evaluation Hospital in Herne, Germany. In all, Esogetics has come a very long way in combining the knowledge and wisdom of the ages and working on creating reproducible and sustainable results in our scientific age. a SchaOn Blodgett, CCP, BTAT, is one of the owners of Psinergy Natural Health and Holistic Wellness. SPIRITUALITY
A middle-class neo-pagan finds home by Todd Berntson am an educated, middle-class, professional who also happens to believe that I am part of a larger ecosystem of life; that there is a divine spirit that dwells within all things; that there is an equal balance between the feminine and masculine aspects of nature (the Goddess and God); and that the human body, and sexuality for that matter, is not something to be a source of shame or fear, but rather celebrated in its variety of expression. Several years ago, I discovered that there is a name for people like me: “middle-class Neo-pagan.” Being a middle-class Neo-pagan in today’s world is kind of like — to paraphrase Charles Dickens — the best of times and the worst of times. On one hand, I don’t have to worry about being burnt at the stake for having reverence for nature, I don’t have to worry about losing my job for wearing a pentacle around my neck, and the huge increase in the number of people who are interested in neo-pagan philosophy and practice means that there are a lot more people like me. On the other hand, most other people like me do not become involved in the local community in the same way that, say, middle-class Christians tend to do. So, being on this path can feel a bit lonely at times. I have often wondered whether I am a bit of a misfit in the neo-pagan world.
Noble. That is a huge number of people!

There have been numerous studies on the demographics of neo-pagans in the U.S. (for example, Voices from the Pagan Census: A National Survey of

Witches and Neo-Pagans in the United States, Studies in Comparative Religion, by Helen Berger) that have consistently found that neo-pagans, when compared to the general population, have a higher level of education, are very tech savvy, lean toward the political left, and are solidly in the middle class. There are also a whole lot of us out there. Although estimating the number of neo-pagans is difficult, as many people won’t admit to being neo-pagan because of the unfair stigma that is still attached to the word, what I found very interesting was an estimate from a marketing executive from Barnes & Noble who stated that the U.S. “paganbuying audience” was approximately 10 million. This means that approximately one out of every thirty people in the U.S. spends their money purchasing pagan-related materials from Barnes & Noble. That doesn’t even take into account the large number of people interested in the neo-pagan path who don’t purchase anything from Barnes &
My question is, where is everybody? There are currently just over 3 million people in the Twin Cities metro area. If one out of every thirty of them has at least an interest in neo-paganism, that is 100,000 people — most of whom are educated, middle-class professionals like me. Yet, when I attend a neo-pagan event, such as Pagan Pride Day that is held every October (tcpaganpride.org) there may only be a couple hundred people who show up, and many of them are more of a counter-culture group. While I have no judgment whatsoever about tie-dye, role-playing games, and railing against social institutions, that is just not me. Fortunately, I finally found a neopagan community that has become my new home. It is a group that puts on a festival called Summerland Spirit Festival (summerlandfest.com). When I went last year, I met a chemist, several teachers, a lawyer, psychologists, corporate IT professionals, nurses, administrators, and all kinds of other people like me. It has always been important to feel a sense of belonging and support while traveling along my spiritual path. Having a spiritual home is important, and I hope that any other neo-pagan out there who don’t feel like they quite belong anywhere to keep looking. You are not alone. There are a whole lot of us out there, and you too will find a spiritual home. a Dr. Todd Berntson has been actively involved in the Twin Cities neo-pagan community for the past ten years.
