Estimados amigos,

Dear friends,

Sin duda que este 2017 ha sido un gran año para SKY, en el cual nuestra compañía pudo consagrar el modelo low cost que venía impulsando desde 2015, permitiendo así abrir los cielos para que cada vez más personas puedan volar.

Without doubt, 2017 has been a great year for SKY. Our company has been able to consolidate the low-cost model we have been building since 2015, and thus help open up the skies for more people than ever before.

Hoy, a dos años de haber anunciado que ofreceríamos pasajes de avión a precio de bus, es un orgullo para todos quienes conformamos SKY poder decir que no solo cumplimos nuestra palabra, sino que revolucionamos la industria aeronáutica.

En ese sentido, estamos conscientes del impacto que hemos causado en el mercado, pues nunca antes en la historia de nuestro país, tantas personas habían podido volar, y nunca antes había sido tan accesible y barato hacerlo.

Now, two years after we announced that we would begin to offer air travel at bus prices, it is an honour for all of us here at SKY to be able to say that we not only kept our promise, but also revolutionised the air travel industry. We are keenly aware of the impact that we have had on the market. Never before in our country have so many people had access to air travel, and never before has it been so easy and cheap to fly.

Pero eso no es todo. Este año también nos propusimos poder conectar cada vez más a nuestro país e inauguramos las rutas directas Antofagasta-Concepción y Concepción-Calama; acortando la distancia entre el norte y sur de Chile. Además, la ciudad argentina de Rosario se sumó a nuestras operaciones permanentes, y durante el verano viajaremos a Florianópolis, Río de Janeiro y Punta del Este.

Así, a fines de diciembre de este año, casi 4 millones de personas habrán volado en SKY, aprovechando los beneficios del modelo low cost.

Sabemos que aún quedan desafíos pendientes, como continuar liderando la discusión por la rebaja en las tasas de embarque y ese será nuestro principal objetivo para el próximo año: buscar y promover todas las iniciativas que permitan que cada vez más personas puedan viajar en avión.

But that’s not all. This year we also set ourselves the goal of increasing connectivity in Chile, and to that end, we inaugurated direct flights between Antofagasta and Concepción and Concepción and Calama, dramatically reducing the distance between northern and southern Chile. Moreover, we added the Argentine city of Rosario to our permanent roster of destinations, and this summer will see us open seasonal routes to Florianópolis, Rio de Janeiro and Punta del Este.

By the end of December this year, almost four million people will have flown with SKY, taking full advantage of our ground-breaking low-cost model.

We know that there are still challenges ahead, like continuing to lead the discussion on lowering airport fees. That will be our main goal for the coming year: to develop and encourage initiatives that help get more people up in the air.

Watch the Sunset in Urca It’s traditional among “cariocas” (Rio locals) to watch the sunset from this quiet residential neighbourhood at the foot of Sugarloaf Mountain. Why? Besides the spectacular view of the bay, the area is home to Bar Urca (barurca.com.br), which has, since 1939, served up some of the best “petiscos” (nibbles) and beers on the coast.

A Walk Around Bondinho The best way to get to the Santa Teresa neighbourhood, famed for its colonial townhouses and artistic workshops, is on the colourful old “bondinho”: the last of Rio's once ubiquitous trams. Rua Lélio Gama 2, Centro.

Breakfast in Parque Lage This huge, beautiful European-style park is world famous. Not only was it the backdrop to Snoop Dog’s video for “Beautiful”, but it also has a great cafe, several hectares of thick jungle and a two-hour trail that leads up to the statue of Christ the Redeemer. IR A BARRA EN METRO

Head to Barra on the Metro Located some 20km from Copacabana, Barra, Barra de Tijuca is a beautiful beach with over 14km of sand, and some great stores and restaurants to boot. Besides, since 2016 you can get there very quickly on the Metro, alighting at the Jardín Oceánico station.

Learning in Jardín Botánico These spectacular botanical gardens are home to almost 6,500 species of plants -both local and introduced- and cover 137ha. There's everything from enormous palms to myriad orchids and bromeliads, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot a monkey or two. Walking from Leblon to Leme This almost two-hour stroll takes you from Leblon to the end of Copacabana, in the area of Leme, and is ideal for anyone looking for a first impression of the city’s most famous districts. The walk takes you around buildings and green hills, along the traditional streets lined with colonial Portuguese cobbles.

VER EL ATARDECER EN EL PAN DE AZÚCAR Este famoso morro es también otro de los sitios emblemáticos de la ciudad, desde donde se obtienen hermosas panorámicas de sus cerros y playas. La mejor hora para ir es al atardecer, subiendo en el teleférico que sale desde el sector Urca.

TOMAR JUGOS DE FRUTAS Al desayuno, a mitad de una caminata por la ciudad o después de un chapuzón en la playa, tomarse un jugo en la barra de una juguería es obligación en Río.

Hay decenas de ellas, pero una de las más famosas es Polis Sucos (polissucos.com.br), en Ipanema, cerca de la estación de metro de Nossa Senhora da Paz.

CENAR EN UNA CHURRASQUERÍA Comer en un rodizio, los famosos tenedores libres en los que ofrecen carnes cocinadas a la espada, es otra experiencia fundamental en Río. Una de las más tradicionales y cariocas es Churrascaria Palace (churrascariapalace.com.br), en Copacabana, fundada en 1951.

At the Top of Corcovado No trip to Rio is complete without a visit to the world-famous Christ the Redeemer statue, from where you are granted the most iconic view of the city. It's best to avoid the hottest hours of the afternoon. Remember to buy tickets online in advance at parquedatijuca.com.br Watch the Sunset from Sugarloaf Mountain This famous hill is also one of the most iconic tourist spots in Rio, and home to some of the best views over the city’s hills and beaches. The best idea is to head there at sunset, using the cable car to reach the top from the Urca district.

A Fruit Juice For breakfast, halfway through a walk around the city, or even after a dip in the ocean, knocking back a fruit juice at one of the city's many juice bars is a Rio staple. There are dozens of bars around the city, but one of the most famous is Polis Sucos (polissucos.com.br) in Ipanema, near the Nossa Senhora da Paz Metro station.

IRSE DE FIESTA EN LAPA Para quienes buscan fiesta, el barrio de Lapa es su lugar. El epicentro de la vida nocturna en Río cuenta con decenas de bares, entre los que destaca Rio Scenarium (rioscenarium.art.br), un gran local de tres pisos, perfecto para ver música en vivo y bailar.

A Buffet Dinner Eating at a “rodizo”, one of the famous allyou-can-eat restaurants where they serve meat off the spit, is a fundamental experience in Rio. One of the most traditional of these establishments is Churrascaria Palace (churrascariapalace.com.br) in Copacabana, which was founded in 1951.

Climbing the Steps in Lapa The famous party district of Lapa is perfect for catching live music shows, but it's also home to the colourful Selarón Steps, created out of thousands of ceramic tile pieces by Chilean artist Jorge Selarón. Rua Joaquim Silva s/n, Lapa.

Catch the Races at Rubaiyat The Rubaiyat (rubaiyat.com.br/rio) steak restaurant is one of the most famous in Brazil. Their Rio branch is set up inside the city’s hippodrome, meaning that –if you call ahead to reserve a terrace table on Saturday lunchtime- you can watch the races whilst savouring one of the best sirloins or “picanhas” in Brazil.

unta del Este arde cada verano y este año no será la excepción. En enero y febrero del año que se va, el balneario más exclusivo de Uruguay marcó cifras récord de visitantes, en las que destacó un aumento de turistas argentinos –que históricamente han sido los principales visitantes de este lugar–, cercano al 24 por ciento. Y ahora se esperan números aún mejores.

Conocido como “el St. Tropez de Sudamérica”, podría decirse que Punta del Este nació como balneario en 1889, cuando se construyó el primer hotel y lo que hasta entonces había sido solo un pequeño pueblo costero en la punta de una península –de ahí su nombre–, bañada por el río de La Plata en un lado (la llamada Playa Mansa) y por el océano Atlántico en el otro (la Playa Brava), pasó a ser cada vez más una ciudad.

Punta del Este comes alive every summer, and this year will be no different. Last January and February, Uruguay’s most exclusive beach resort registered record visitor numbers, with a boom in Argentine tourists –who have historically been the most frequent visitors-, of almost 24%. This year looks to be even better.

You might say that Punta del Este, known as “the St. Tropez of South America”, was born as a resort in 1889, with the construction of the first hotel in what until then had been a small coastal town on the end of a peninsula –hence the name, “punta” means “end/point” in Spanish–, bathed in the waters of the River Plate on one side (Playa Mansa beach) and by the Atlantic on the other (Playa Brava beach). From then on, the town just grew and grew.

This growth brought with it the “rambla” or “costanera” –the city’s beautiful promenade-,

The Scale of Punta A good place to take in the size and shape of Punta del Este is La Vista (LaVista360.com), a building whose 22nd floor is an observation deck overlooking both sides of the peninsula, which you can reach in an external lift. There’s an art gallery there with important works from regional and international artists, as well as water features and curiosities such as a Tibetan gong and old padlocks. The building also houses a rotating restaurant and dinner shows.

Artigas), de aplaudida cocina vasca; Rustic Resto Bar (Calle 29 y Gorlero), con buena relación precio-calidad; o los icónicos churros rellenos con dulce de leche de Manolo (Calle 29, entre Gorlero y Calle 24), toda una tradición en la ciudad.

Otro gran paseo está frente a Punta: la isla Gorriti, que tiene una de las mejores playas de la zona; y la Isla de Lobos, perfecta para ir con niños, pues alberga una colonia de 200 mil lobos marinos. Varias empresas hacen navegaciones hacia estas islas.

La Barra, entonces, se convierte en el sitio para ver y ser visto en Punta del Este. Taquilleras tiendas de diseño vuelven a abrir sus puertas a tiempo completo y hacen relucir sus vitrinas.

Another great day out is just off shore: Isla Gorriti, an island with one of the area’s best beaches, and Isla de Lobos, another ideal for kids as it’s home to around 200,000 sea lions. There are plenty of companies running tours to both places.

When the sun goes down, the most iconic spot is still Moby Dick, a bar near the port that’s busy all year round, but that really explodes in summer, especially on Saturdays. Of course, we couldn’t forget the classic Hotel Conrad, which is surely the most famous in Punta de Este and has around 3,400m2 of casino floor space and, besides, a healthy billboard of events and concerts that visitors would do well to keep an eye on.

Let’s Go for a Ride You can’t visit Punta del Este without visiting Punta Ballena, which is just 13km from the city centre. There you’ll find the best photo op in the area: Casapueblo, the sprawling home of the now-deceased Uruguayan artist Carlos Páez Vilaró, and a major landmark for Punta.

The traditional visit is at sunset, when you can look on as the sun slowly sinks beneath the Atlantic and the house’s speaker system plays one of Vilaró’s poems.

UNO. La isla es grande.

ONE. It’s a big island.

“Floripa” isn’t as easy to get around as you might expect. The distances between one point and the next are large –around 30-40km- and both the beaches and the towns have different styles and access points. It’s worth considering, then, that the best means of transport is by car, although that means putting up with the traffic, which can be a pain in the summer months, especially if you are heading north or south from the centre of the island. There are also bus routes, which are cheaper, but be prepared for a longer ride.

Floripa no se recorre tan fácilmente como podría parecer. Las distancias entre uno y otro punto de interés son largas –entre 30 y 40 kilómetros– y tanto las playas como sus pueblos tienen distintos estilos y vías de acceso. Por lo mismo, hay que considerar que lo mejor para moverse es en auto, aunque eso signifique estar dispuesto al tránsito, que puede ser muy alto en verano, en especial si se va desde el centro de la isla hacia el norte o hacia el sur. También hay recorridos de buses, que resultan más económicos, aunque más lentos.

DOS. Elija primero un lugar Justamente por lo anterior, lo más recomendable para Floripa es escoger primero en qué parte de la isla pretende quedarse, pues cada sector tiene su perfil y público específico. Si lo suyo es el surf, entonces debiera inclinarse por playas como Mole y Joaquina, en el centro-este de la isla, donde hay olas y viento constante. Si busca diversión y fiestas súper exclusivas, el lugar sin duda es la playa Jureré, donde están los hoteles más caros en plena arena. Si está viajando con niños, el dato sería optar por playas como Canasvieiras, Ingleses y la costa norte en general, que es el sector más desarrollado de Floripa: allí están los hoteles diseñados para familias, como el Costao do Santinho (en el sector noroeste). Y si lo suyo es la tranquilidad y el entorno natural, entonces debiera apuntar hacia las playas del sur, más alejadas y de ambiente rural, como Armacao o Campeche, que si bien

TRES. Floripa tiene historia La isla no se trata solo de playas. En Floripa existe una serie de sitios históricos, desde barrios coloniales hasta antiguos fuertes portugueses que vale la pena visitar. Entre ellos destacan el barrio de Santo Antonio de Lisboa, famoso por sus calles adoquinadas que datan de 1845, o Ribeirao da Ilha, con uno de los conjuntos arquitectónicos mejor preservados de la isla. También está el Centro Histórico propiamente tal, entre cuyas atracciones se cuenta la Catedral Metropolitana, la Plaza XV de Novembro, la Casa da Alfandega (Aduana) y el Mercado Público Municipal, popular hito turístico.

Finalmente, en Floripa hay cuatro fuertes, siendo Santa Cruz de Anhatomirim el más grande de todos: durante la colonia estuvo destinado a la defensa del norte de la ciudad y tiene una de las mejores vistas panorámicas

CUATRO. Hay muchos paseos Además de las playas, que son muchas (la lista oficial reseña al menos 27, de distintas formas, tamaños y colores), en Floripa hay varios senderos de trekking, rutas en bicicleta, buses panorámicos que recorren la isla, sitios de buceo, buen viento para windsurf y kitesurf, stand up paddle y navegaciones hacia islas como Campeche o Papagaio, que también funciona como un mini-resort que se puede visitar por el día. Solo por elegir uno, aquí reseñaremos un paseo en especial: el que va a la Barra da Lagoa. Armacao or Campeche have little in the way of accommodation choices, but that’s the point: they still feel wild.

THREE. “Floripa” has a history The island isn’t only about beaches. There’s a series of places of historical interest in “Floripa”, from colonial districts to old Portuguese forts that are all worth a visit.

Among the best sites are the neighbourhood of Santo Antonio in Lisboa, famed for its cobbled streets dating back to 1845, or Ribeirao da Ilha, one of the best preserved architectural complexes on the island. There’s also the Old Town itself, whose attractions include the Metropolitan Cathedral, 15th November Square, the Casa da Alfandega (Customs building) and the Municipal Public Market, a popular site among tourists. Finally, in “Floripa” there are four fortresses. Santa Cruz de Anhatomirim is the largest of all, and in colonial times stood as the defensive bastion of the north of the city. Indeed, it has one of the best views over “Floripa” (alongside the nighttime view from the Hercilio Luz suspension bridge by the Parque da Luz – another unmissable site on the island).

FOUR. There’s plenty to do Besides the beaches, of which there are many (the official list contains at least 27 of all shapes, sizes and colours), “Floripa” has a number of trekking trails, bike routes, panoramic bus tours around the island, diving sites, good winds for windsurfing and kitesurfing, stand up paddle, and boat rides to other islands such as Campeche or Papagaio, which also functions as a mini-resort you can visit for the day. To pick just one, here’s a summary of a really special trip: out to Barra da Lagoa. The trip entails a fun boat ride over Lagoa da Conceicao, the island’s biggest lagoon that’s also the “tourist centre” of “Floripa”, as it’s where most shops, restaurants, and cafes are, as well as some of the liveliest bars such as the John Bull Pub. The adventure is run by the Ondanca (Ondanca. com) company, and takes in a two-hour

Back on land, there’s a sweet and cold caipirinha waiting for you.

FIVE. It’s internationally famous In the far north of “Floripa”, Jureré Internacional is to the left side of Jureré beach, an area that has an air of Miami Beach to it, with summer houses and real estate projects worth several thousand dollars. Pure luxury, and frequented by Giselle Bundchen among other famous faces, who visit the popular beach clubs or exclusive designer beachwear stores. You might even spot a famous face in an ice-cream parlour, coffee shop, restaurant or bar. Be warned, though, that this isn’t one of the best beaches for swimming (but people

SIX. Surf’s up Surfing is part of the “Floripa” DNA. And perhaps the best place to get a feel for it -and, of course, try it out yourself- is in Joaquina, where there are a number of international surf championships. “Joaca” as it’s known to the locales, is everything you could wish for from a Brazilian beach. That is to say, there are bars serving up cold beer, coconut milk, fried fish and shrimp cooked in as many ways as you can think of. Argentine tourists love it. In a similar mould, Mole is really popular with young people and has a great range of beach bars.

Una de las mejores es Matadeiro, a la que se llega tras una suave caminata de 5 minutos desde la playa do Armacao, atravesando un puente de madera y caminando bajo árboles y, luego, sobre los roqueríos que desembocan en Matadeiro.

Con un mar azul turquesa y una serie de bares en el costado derecho, Matadeiro es un lugar idílico para olvidarse del mundo, con una caipirinha en la mano y una suculenta porción de calamares apanados.

SEVEN. It’s still wild The southern coast of “Floripa” is much less developed than the north, and has some of the wildest beaches in this part of Brazil. One of the best is Matadeiro, which you can reach after a five-minute walk from Armacao beach, crossing a wooden bridge, ducking under trees and scrambling over the rocks that border the beach. The waters here are crystal-clear and there are a few bars on the right of the beach. Indeed, Matadeiro is the perfect place to forget about the world, with a caipirinha in hand and a succulent portion of breaded shrimps on your plate.

Built to highlight local culture and traditions, Tierra Chiloé is making waves in Chile's luxury hotel industry.

The décor here is modern Chilean, but takes most of its inspiration from the aesthetics and lifestyle of the Chiloé peninsular. For this summer, 12 new rooms have been added to make 24 in total for the project, which also includes a newly redesigned spa and a

contemplative stroll. There's also a new store selling some of the region's most iconic products such as potatoes, herbs, and preserves, all of which are used liberally in the hotel's own kitchens, alongside extra-fresh seafood such as fish, oysters and sea urchins.

“It has been very interesting to work with the staff at the hotel, who love the land they live in.

They really helped us with the mutual exchange of knowledge with the local community. It's a great source of pride to be able to highlight the authenticity of the area”, says Alexandra Edwards.

Set back into a 10ha area of land, the hotel's architecture takes inspiration from the traditional Chiloé stilt houses, and follows the time-honoured local techniques of carpentry, with standout points such as wooden roof tiles.

Outside the hotel, Tierra Chiloé has a wide variety of excursions on offer to allow guests to immerse themselves in the surrounding landscapes and wildlife. Crítico de la televisión chilena, Pedro Engel registra una vida digna de un guion, con tragedias familiares, persecuciones políticas y la firme voluntad de salir adelante siempre. “Yo nací con la muerte al lado”, dice. / Chilean TV critic, Pedro Engel, has lived a life worthy of a Hollywood drama, where family tragedies and political repression never defeated his will to keep moving forward. “I was born with death by my side”, he says.

Pedro Engel (67) no le causa mucha gracia que digan que su biografía parece una novela, pero los hechos son dignos de best seller. Su familia huyó del nazismo en Europa, aunque del lado paterno no sobrevivió nadie a la II Guerra Mundial. Tuvo una difícil relación con su padre, vio morir a su hermano y su esposa se suicidó dejándolo con cuatro hijos a los 29 años. “Yo nací con la muerte al lado”, sintetiza.

En vez de caer derribado, Engel convirtió esas experiencias en una manera de enfrentar la vida, que lo ha convertido en personaje mediático por décadas en la televisión chilena. Este “Ancestrólogo-EscritorAstrólogo” como se presenta en su página web, encarna una combinación de experto zodiacal y consejero espiritual que conquistó su propio programa en Canal 13, “Abrazar la vida”, además de una presencia permanente en el matinal “Bienvenidos”.

Estos episodios llevaron a Engel a una conclusión.

Una fuerza superior nos instala en el escenario de la existencia. Actuamos. Luego nos quitan de la obra sin previo aviso.

—Eso me llevó a buscar la trascendencia, a buscar un sentido que no terminara con la muerte –explica.

—¿Significa que nuestro guion en la vida ya está

escrito, y solo nos queda representarlo?

—Todos los guiones están preescritos, pero uno les pue-

de hacer un arreglito. Uno es coautor de su destino.

“Siempre fui distinto”

Pedro Engel no identifica algún episodio en particular que revelara sus inclinaciones espirituales, pero dice que desde niño no se conformaba con la transitoriedad de la vida. Más bien solitario, encontraba refugio en la música clásica, escuchando a Mozart y Beethoven en el living de su casa completamente solo.

Pedro Engel (67) doesn’t like to hear that his life story reads like a novel, but the things that have happened to him wouldn’t look out of place in a best-seller. His family fled Nazism in Europe, although on his father’s side no one survived the Second World War. He had a difficult relationship with his father, he saw his brother die, and his wife took her own life, leaving him with four children at the age of just 29. “I was born with death by my side”, he says.

Instead of admitting defeat, Engel turned those experiences into a philosophy for life, and in the decades since, he has become a famous face on Chilean daytime TV. His website defines him as “Ancestrologist-WriterAstrologer”, and indeed, it’s this combination of expertise in the zodiac and spiritual guidance that has landed him his very own show on Canal 13, “Abrazar la Vida” (Embrace Life), as well as a permanent spot as a panellist on the breakfast show “Bienvenidos”.

The adversities he faced led Engel to a conclusion. A higher power has placed us in this plane of existence. We act. Then our works are taken from us without warning.

—That’s what turned my attention towards something transcendent, to find a meaning that doesn’t end in death –he explains.

—Does this mean that our script is already written for us, and all we have to do is follow it?

—All the scripts are written, but we can make small changes. We are the co-authors of our destiny.

“I was always different” Pedro Engel can’t put his finger on a particular event that might explain his spirituality, but he says that from a young age he was never at ease with life being merely transitory. A solitary child, he found shelter in classical music, and would listen to Mozart and Beethoven in his living room, utterly alone. “I would be transported, and I felt as if I was travelling to other worlds and realities. I was always different. I think I must have some degree of Asperger’s”, he says.

To his father’s chagrin, Engel studied literature. “I believe in what Borges said -that

“Me transportaba y sentía que iba hacia otros mundos y otras realidades. Siempre fui distinto. Creo que debo tener algo de Asperger”, dice.

Para disgusto de su padre, Engel estudió literatura.

“Comparto esa frase de Borges que dice que el paraíso es una biblioteca”, dice, y subraya al legendario escritor argentino como su autor favorito.

—Para un exmiembro de un grupo de ultra izquierda

como el MIR, ¿no hay conflicto en ser fan de Borges, que no ganó el premio Nobel por simpatizar con dictaduras de derecha?

—Me provocó un conflicto. Pero como dice Heidegger, la obra es independiente al autor. Lo que Borges me mostró en la vida trascendió la política. Ya no soy ese joven que daba la vida por la izquierda.

—For a former member of the ultra-left-wing group MIR, isn’t there a conflict in appreciating Borges, who was overlooked for the Nobel Prize as he supported right-wing dictatorships?

—There was a conflict, yes. But as Heidegger says, the work is independent of the author. Borges showed me that life can transcend politics. I am no longer that young man who was willing to give up his life for the Left.

Engel says he’s able to build a close relationship with his fans despite the TV screen that separates them, mainly because of his philosophy of listening before advising.

Según Engel, él logra cercanía con el público aun cuando su presencia está mediatizada por la pantalla, gracias a que su interés radica en escuchar antes que aconsejar.

—Eso sucede poco hoy entre las personas, escucharse. La televisión trata de asustar mediante la tragedia, de frenar. Creo que llegué a este medio para amar, abrazar y mostrar la espiritualidad. Mi gran triunfo, entre comillas, en la televisión es ese. No quiero inducir a la idea de que tengo súper poderes. Siempre contesto a la gente desde la humildad y apuntando a que ellos mismos encuentren la respuesta en su corazón.

—Entonces, la televisión asusta al público…

—Sí. A la televisión le gusta hablar del fin del mundo,

del terremoto, de las peleas y los cahuines.

—Sin embargo, usted participa de programas matinales que simbolizan ese fatalismo. ¿Cómo se inserta en esos espacios?

—Con dificultad. Todo el tiempo me están diciendo que mi mensaje es muy positivo, que tengo que sumar a la magia negra, los terremotos. Me niego. Mi marca es abrazar, amar. Es luminosa. Eso me ha creado conflictos.

Creen erróneamente que lo oscuro vende más y no es así, porque a mí me ha ido bien. He sido víctima de bullying y de momentos tristes, pero sigo con mi mensaje.

Pedro Engel sufrió persecución política en los 70. Fue torturado. Pero su lectura de esa experiencia y las consecuencias de aquel pasado en la sociedad chilena no apunta a tribunales, sino a un cambio radical.

—El mensaje ahí es que las personas de mi generación tenemos que sanarnos, porque el conflicto no se ha podido cerrar. Es un juego de culpas.

—People don’t do that enough, listen to one another. Television is about scaring people with tragedies, about keeping them boxed in. But I think my role there is to love, to embrace, and to show spirituality. On TV, that has been my great triumph, if you like. I don’t want to give off the impression that I have superpowers. I always answer people humbly, and by pointing out that they will find the answer within themselves, in their own hearts.

—So, TV scares its audience…

—Yes. Television channels like to talk about the end of days, earthquakes, fights, and gossip.

—Nevertheless, you take part in daytime shows that embody this kind of negative outlook. How do you approach that?

—It’s hard. People are always telling me that my message is too positive, and that I have to move into the black arts, and to talk about earthquakes. I won’t. My brand is embracing, loving.

It’s about light. So I have faced conflicts. People think, incorrectly, that negativity sells. But it isn’t as simple as that, because I have done well.

I have been bullied and had some sad moments, but my message remains the same.

Pedro Engel suffered political oppression in the ‘70s. He was tortured. But his view of that experience and the consequences of that period on Chilean society go beyond courts and retributive justice, and look to radical changes.

—The message there has to be that my generation must allow itself to heal, because the conflict has left an open wound. It’s just a blame game.

—What do we need to make that happen?

—Humility. There are always people who

—¿Qué falta para que eso suceda?

—Humildad. Siempre hay unos que se ponen en el lugar de los buenos y otros de los malos. Pero los que se dicen buenos, al final terminan actuando como los malos. ¿En qué momento nos vamos a encontrar y mirar nuevamente? Yo viví eso en carne propia. No lo estoy aconsejando porque lo leí en un libro. En mi vida he tenido que sanar muchos episodios muy tristes y no quedarme con el rencor, el odio y la venganza. Pienso que los errores se cometen de forma colectiva, y también se sanan colectivamente.

“¿De dónde salió el concepto de la fidelidad? Está sobrevalorada.

Si hay gente que le gusta tener dos parejas, fabuloso. Cada uno debe amar como le dicta su corazón” will see it as a sort of battle of good vs. evil. But the ones who see themselves as the goodies end up acting like the baddies.

When are we going to sit down and look at one another again?

I have seen this with my own eyes. I’m not saying it because I read it in a book. I have been through a lot of sad moments in my life, but I have no grudges, hatred or desire for revenge. I think that mistakes are made collectively, and that they are repaired collectively.

—It’s a difficult job in an individualistic society.

—We have this perception as a culture that the victim is better than the aggressor. But, in the end, we have to work on reconciliation for Chile’s sake.

—Es que existe la cultura de que la víctima es mejor que el victimario. Pero, finalmente, tenemos que hacer un trabajo de reconciliación por Chile.

El Ancestrólogo-Escritor-Astrólogo se ha manifestado también en otras posiciones que levantan polvareda. ¿Por ejemplo? Engel es pro cannabis y cree que el doble estándar domina el asunto.

—Está legalizado el alcohol, que es súper dañino e inútil. Y la marihuana, que tiene efectos medicinales, se condena como un crimen.

—Ha manifestado también las bondades del poliamor.

—Mucha gente ama a dos personas de manera oculta.

Parece que tener amantes es más permitido en la sociedad con mentiras de por medio, que amar a dos personas de forma clara. En mis años de juventud en los 70, el amor era una lucha para que fuera más transparente, luminoso. Pero hoy la sociedad se ha puesto más pacata, moralista y enjuiciadora. ¿De dónde salió el concepto de la fidelidad? Está sobrevalorada. Si hay gente que le gusta tener dos parejas, fabuloso. Cada uno debe amar como le dicta su corazón.

—Alcohol is legal, and that is very harmful and useless. But marihuana has medicinal effects and it’s criminalised.

—You’ve also spoken out on the benefits of free love.

—A lot of people love two people, but they hide it. It would seem that society accepts the concept of affairs with lies and deceit involved, but to love two people openly is looked down on. In my youth, in the ‘70s, we struggled to make sure love was open, transparent, and bright. But these days society has become more prudish, moralising and judgemental. Where does this concept of fidelity come from? It’s over-valued. If there are people who want to have two partners, that’s great. Everyone must love according to their own heart’s desires.

El restorán más emblemático del destacado chef argentino Francis Mallmann, desde hace más de 20 años que se ubica en la bodega Escorihuela Gascón, no muy lejos del centro de Mendoza. En un espacio amplio y elegantemente decorado, lo mejor es sentarse en la fresca terraza, desde donde podrá ver a los cocineros ahumando, quemando, asando y horneando las distintas preparaciones protagonizadas por carnes y hortalizas provenientes de la región. ¿Nuestra recomendación? Alguna de las entradas con verduras, como los espárragos grillados con arvejas y huevo pochado, o el ojo de bife con chimichurri.

Argentine chef Francis Mallmann’s most iconic restaurant has spent the last 20 years or so working out of the Escorihuela Gascón Winery, not too far from the centre of Mendoza. The premises are spacious and finely decorated, but the best option is to reserve a table on the terrace, where you can stay fresh and watch the cooks smoking, charring, grilling and roasting the many meat-based dishes on offer, all served up with regional herbs and vegetables. A recommendation? Try a vegetable-based starter such as the grilled asparagus with peas and poached egg, or the rib eye with chimichurri, a typical Argentine relish. Of course, you have to bear in mind that the price per person averages at around USD 90.

Boa, which opened just a few months ago, is located right by the Costanera Center mall on the top floor of a small building that has been transformed into an open, well-lit space full of enormous plants, with a small openair terrace and architecture that is reminiscent of a greenhouse.

The brains behind the project are siblings Francisca and Felipe Dibán, who, after travelling for several months around Scandinavia and Asia, decided to quit their jobs –as a designer and stock broker respectively- to take a chance on this new project. “We are not

esde la Edad Media los monjes utilizaron hierbas y especias para crear licores que fueron usados como pociones curativas. De esa tradición, hace más de cien años ya, nacieron los llamados bíters, bebidas alcohólicas con un ingrediente en común: la quina, un antiguo remedio contra los problemas digestivos, la fiebre e incluso la malaria. Estos licores –de aromas intensos y sabores contradictorios, entre amargos y dulces– se convirtieron en bebida de culto de las incipientes sociedades industriales del siglo XIX y, de paso, en fuente de inspiración para campañas publicitarias artísticamente ambiciosas, que hasta hoy marcan el aura relajada y mediterránea de estos brebajes.

La gama de bíters abarca desde el licor dulce de almendras amargas como el conocido y vintage “amaretto” –un clásico de los bajativos nacionales–, pasando por el famoso Campari –cuyo éxito demuestra que su implacable sabor permanece–, hasta el agrio, seco y refinado amargo que se bebe como digestivo en todas las mesas o a cualquier hora del día.

Bitters have their roots in the Middle Ages, when monks would use herbs and spices to make liqueurs to be used as curative potions. The tradition continued, and bitters as we know them today (linked by a common ingredient: quinine, an ancient cure for digestive problems, fever and even malaria) have been around for about 100 years.

These liqueurs –with their intense aromas and contrasting sweet-and-sour flavoursgained something of a cult following among the early industrialising societies of the 19th century, and as such became a source of inspiration for avant-garde advertising campaigns that tended, and still do, to highlight bitters’ relaxed, Mediterranean feel.

The range of bitters on the market runs from sweet almond liqueurs such as the well-known vintage “amaretto” –a classic digestif in Chile- to the famous Campari –whose success demonstrates the continued demand for its inimitable flavour- and the bitter, dry and refined bitters taken as an after-dinner drink or, indeed, at any time of the day.

The oldest Chilean digestif is marketed under the slogan "aperitif, digestif, stomach-calming liqueur". This bitter was born in the heart of Valparaíso, and harks back to the first stomach-calming tonics that were concocted by Chilean pharmacies to prevent cramps. The recipe is jealously guarded, but is known to contain 23 herbs and seeds from the south of Chile that are steeped in spirits to produce a truly unique beverage. It’s traditionally taken on the rocks or mixed with pisco. Don’t miss it!

FERNET-BRANCA / ITALY The Eagle’s Talons Saffron is the king of the ingredients that go into making up what has become one of the most popular digestifs in Argentina. More than 40 aromatic herbs interact here, including juniper, aloe vera, yarrow, rhubarb, and coffee, among others, whose essences are all infused into water in order to obtain the perfect balance of flavours and properties. Once the herbs are mixed together, the bitter –in this case wine liqueur- is added to Slovenian oak barrels where it is left to mature for a year before bottling. This is a complex and effective digestive aid, and is usually drunk over ice or mixed with soft drinks.

Estos extractos maduran varios meses en barricas de roble esloveno donde se afinan y condensan todos sus aromas y sabores.

Se consume especialmente después una comida, ya que estimula la digestión y tiene el beneficio de no contener azúcar agregado. Una combinación intensa de hierbas y amargor, con una particular presentación en pequeñas botellitas envueltas en papel de madera.

The name comes from a bitter component called cynarine, which makes up part of the drink's main mixture. This bitter is made using artichokes and 13 herbs, plus an apricot extract. This blend is infused into water, sugar and alcohol until the perfect balance of spirit is reached. The dry, strong flavour –it is said- has highly curative properties. It’s perfect over ice, with a slice of orange and soda water. ÜNDERBERG, GERMANY Stomach Calmer The process developed by the Ünderberg family involves a delicate extraction of the essences and vitamins contained within the specially selected aromatic herbs from 43 different countries.

The extracts mature for months in Slovenian oak barrels where they refine and condense their aromas and flavours. It is traditionally drunk after a meal, as it stimulates digestion and has the extra benefit of having no added sugar. The intense combination of herbs, bitterness is presented in a delightfully unique little bottle, wrapped in paper.

LAS PLAYAS DE PAN DE AZÚCAR DESTACAN POR ESTAR RODEADAS DE UN ENTORNO NATURAL PRIVILEGIADO, CON UNA GRAN VARIEDAD DE FLORA Y FAUNA TÍPICA DE LA COSTA DEL DESIERTO ATACAMEÑO Atacama), marcadas por una gran biodiversidad, que –por ejemplo– incluye 27 especies de cactáceas; 21 de las cuales son endémicas de la zona. La mayoría de estas especies vegetales se encuentran en los sectores cercanos al litoral, debido a la presencia matinal de la neblina costera; la que propicia el crecimiento de plantas como el chañarcillo o el lechero. En cuanto a los animales, en tanto, en tierra es fácil ver guanacos y zorros culpeo, y agudizando un poco la vista es posible observar algunos reptiles, roedores y, en el cielo, aves como el cóndor. Y sí en tierra hay diversidad, en la costa nos encontramos con especies como lobos marinos, chungungos y una gran cantidad de aves, como pelícanos, gaviotas, gaviotines, cormoranes, chorlitos y un largo etcétera, además de las estrellas indiscutidas del parque: los pingüinos de Humboldt. Para verlos, lo mejor es acercarse a la caleta de pescadores y tomar uno de los recomendables paseos en bote hacia la isla Pan de Azúcar.

Some 30km to the north of Chañaral, and 197km from Copiapó, this Conaf National Park was founded in 1985 and today covers an area of 43,000ha (11 thousand in the Antofagasta Region and 32 thousand in the Atacama Region) marked by an impressive biodiversity that, for example, includes 27 cactus species, 21 of which are found nowhere else on earth. The majority of these plant species can be found in the coastal areas, thanks to the daily watering they receive from the Pacific morning fog – the lifeblood of species such as the “chañarcillo” or “lechero” cacti. In terms of animal life, on shore you can easily spot guanacos and culpeo foxes, and if you look closely you'll find reptiles, rodents and, in the air, birds such as the majestic Andean condor. But if you think the land-based wildlife is diverse, the sea is brimming with species such as sea lions, marine otters, and hundreds of sea bird species such as pelicans, seagulls, terns, cormorants, wading birds and many more besides. Of course, the stars of the park are the Humboldt penguins.

To see them, it's best to head to the fishing village and take one of the regular tour boats out to Pan de Azúcar Island.

A comienzos de los 90, un grupo de personas –locales y forasteros– que eran asiduos visitantes de esta zona, se enteró de que un valioso trozo de bosques de araucarias en la Cordillera del Cañi, en las afueras de Pucón, se había puesto en venta. Alertados por el peligro de su desaparición, decidieron unirse en una fundación para comprarlo y protegerlo. Fue así como nació el Santuario El Cañi, una de las primeras iniciativas de conservación privada en Chile, que hoy es uno de los tesoros naturales más emblemáticos de La Araucanía, manejado 134

At the beginning of the ‘90s, a group of people –locals and out-of-towners- who frequented the area, found out that this priceless coppice of monkey puzzles in the Cañi Hills just outside Pucón was up for sale. Concerned about the disappearance of a local landmark, they decided to create a foundation in order to buy the land and protect it. This became Santuario El Cañi, one of the first private conservation projects in Chile, that is today one of the most iconic treasures in the La Araucanía Region, run by an association of local guides from the area around Pichares.

De hecho, una de sus aperturas recientes es una nueva sala, contigua a la hostería, donde se están realizando 136

clases de yoga, biodanza y otras disciplinas, tanto para la comunidad como para turistas de paso.

Hoy, ¡École! cuenta con 26 habitaciones, 12 de las cuales tiene baño privado (las otras lo comparten). Toda la hostería tiene calefacción central. Hay wifi, servicio de masajes, lavandería y orientación turística para la zona. Las más nuevas son 6 piezas dobles (una interconectada para recibir a una familia) que se construyeron en el patio de atrás de la

casona original y que llevan nombres de árboles nativos como “Roble”, “Queule”, “Coigüe” y “Lenga”. La decoración es sencilla, con algunos tejidos y piezas de cobre con motivos mapuches. Un alojamiento simple, pero cálido.

Toda la hostería tiene calefacción central. Hay wifi, servicio de masajes, lavandería y orientación turística para recorrer la zona. Uno de los espacios más destacados es la sala de estar, donde se reúnen los pasajeros y se suele

¡École! was the natural next step: the foundation realised that they needed somewhere to accommodate visitors coming to the reserve. So they decided to buy out Don Pepe

in 1994, remodelling the old premises with recycled materials –mostly repurposed oak and “coigüe” wood– and creating a new hotel, one that quickly stood out from the competition in Pucón. Not only did it have cosy rooms at reasonable prices in a traditional-style southern country house, but it also had the first entirely vegetarian restaurant (an idea that came from the partners themselves, among whom is Nicole Mintz, the owner of Santiago’s famous El Huerto restaurant).

Moreover, they also turned it into a space for culture and gatherings, organising free film showings, talks, workshops and events from the very beginning. In fact, one of the most recent openings is a new events room, added on to the side of the hotel, where they run

formar un ambiente entretenido y cosmopolita. Allí hay una pequeña biblioteca con libros para intercambiar y una vitrina donde venden artesanías locales y literatura regional. El restorán vegetariano está aquí mismo, con una carta acotada que incluye platos como verduras al wok con soya, jengibre y avellanas chilenas, acompañadas de arroz integral o quínoa, lasaña de verduras, ñoquis caseros y sándwiches como uno hecho con pan pita, hummus casero, tomate, verduras asadas y lechuga aliñada con tzatziki de yogurt.

En las paredes del restorán, además, se exponen y venden cuadros de artistas locales, que rotan continuamente.

The vegetarian restaurant is also in the hotel, and its small menu includes dishes such as stir fried vegetables in soy sauce, ginger and Chilean hazelnuts, served with whole grain rice or quinoa; vegetable lasagne; homemade gnocchi; and sandwiches including a delicious pita bread with homemade hummus, tomato, roast vegetables and lettuce dressed in tzatziki.

The pictures on the walls in the restaurant, which frequently change, are all by local artists and are all for sale.

onerse de pie sobre una tabla parecida a una de surf y remar solo con un remo, en palabras muy sencillas, de eso se trata el stand up paddle, un deporte que no exige grandes condiciones físicas para practicarlo y que, además de pasarlo bien sobre el agua, es un gran ejercicio para desarrollar la zona abdominal y los brazos.

Con raíces en los pueblos polinesios, la historia dice que los primeros antecedentes de esta disciplina tal como lo conocemos hoy, se remontan a las playas de Hawai en la década de 1960, donde los profesores de surf utilizaban sus tablas más grandes y estables –los famosos “longboards”– y remos de canoa para supervisar dentro del agua las tareas de sus alumnos. Sin embargo, no fue hasta fines de la década de los 90 cuando destacados surfistas hawaianos comenzaron a mezclar el remo con el surf para complementar su entrenamiento. ¿Las razones? Antes que todo, permitía practicar en el agua los días que no corría viento y, sobre todo, se trataba de un excelente ejercicio para fortalecer los músculos del torso y, al mismo tiempo, potenciar el equilibrio.

También conocido como paddle surf, stand-up paddle surfing o stand up paddle –o simplemente SUP, por sus iniciales en inglés–, el surf de remo ha evolucionado y hoy no hacen faltan las olas del mar para practicarlo. De hecho, cualquier gran masa de agua es un buen escenario para deslizarse y, por eso, los grandes lagos y ríos del sur de Chile han sido el escenario para la consolidación de esta tendencia que cada año gana más adeptos.

Aunque el deporte lleva más de una década en el país, durante los últimos dos ya es común ver cómo se practica en playas del norte y sur de Chile, además

That, simply put, is what stand up paddle is all about. The sport doesn't require a great deal of strength or physical fitness and guarantees a good time on the water, as well as a decent workout for the abs and arms.

The sport has its roots in Polynesia, but the first examples of the discipline as we know it today come from the beaches of Hawaii in the 1960s, when surf teachers would use larger and more stable boards (longboards) and canoe oars to supervise what their students were doing in the water. Nonetheless, it was not until the end of the 90s that some famous Hawaiian surfers first began to surf with oars to complement their training regimes. Why? First and foremost, it allows you to

practise in the water even on calm days and, above all, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s great exercise for the muscles in the torso and for perfecting your balance.

Known variably as paddle surf, stand-up paddle surfing or stand up paddle -or, simply, SUP-, the sport has evolved over time and is now practiced even in areas where there are no waves at all. In fact, any large body of water presents an opportunity, meaning the lakes and rivers of southern Chile are beginning to attract aficionados and help consolidate the popularity of the trend.

Although the sport has been in Chile for over a decade, over the past two years it has really taken off, and now itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s common to see people doing SUP all over Chile, at beaches and on

de ríos, lagos y estanques o lagunas artificiales, como la de Chicureo en Santiago. Sin embargo, ha sido más allá de Región Metropolitana donde esta actividad ha avanzado más rápido, consolidando lugares como Rapel, Vichuquén y Pucón como destinos ideales para remar sobre la tabla. La idea, dicen los expertos, es que se trate de aguas calmas y sin grandes corrientes de viento, que permitan practicar este deporte sin peligro mientras, además, se disfruta del entorno natural.

De ese modo, es lógico que los paisajes del sur del país sean el escenario perfecto para la paulatina masificación de esta disciplina, con el Lago Villarrica, en la Región de La Araucanía, como verdadero paraíso nacional, debido a sus aguas mansas, vientos tibios y una variada y amplia oferta para arriendo de equipos, cursos de iniciación, para expertos y nuevas variantes que mezclan stand up paddle con otras disciplinas, como el yoga.

Un poco más al sur, el río Chaihuín, en la Región de Los Ríos, permite remar entre bosques y una abundante vida silvestre; mientras que en la laguna Escondida, en Región de Los Lagos, se puede pasear y ejercitarse mirando bosques de coihues y la espectacular silueta del volcán Calbuco; todo a menos de media hora de Puerto Varas.

En la zona central, en tanto, las playas de Concón y Maitencillo concentran la mayoría de las escuelas de la Región de Valparaíso, mientras que también existen buenas opciones para aprender –¡sin traje de goma!– en las aguas dulces de la laguna Esmeralda –ubicada cerca de Melipilla, a solo una hora de Santiago, en la Región Metropolitana–, y en el tradicional lago Vichuquén, en la Región del Maule: uno de los mejores lugares para aprender stand up paddle debido a sus aguas tranquilas y de agradable temperatura.

Por último, tenga en cuenta el equipo: tabla –varían en forma y peso, ya sean para mar o agua dulce–, remo

However, the sport has seen its biggest boom away from the Metropolitan Region, especially in places such as Rapel, Vichuquén and Pucón, which are now seen as the ideal locations for SUP. The idea, experts say, is to look for calm waters and low wind speeds, which provide the safest conditions for doing SUP and allow you to enjoy the landscapes at the same time.

Of course, this logically means that the scenery in the south of Chile is the ideal spot for the steady increase in the sport’s popularity. Lake Villarrica, in the La Araucanía Region, is a paradise for SUP, with its calm waters, warm winds, a varied and wide range of equipment available for hire, classes for beginners and experts alike, and new concepts that mix SUP with other disciplines such as yoga.

n 2008, el actor británico Daniel Craig aterrizó en Chile para filmar “Quantum of solace”, la vigesimosegunda película de James Bond, en la Región de Antofagasta. En nueve días de rodaje, la producción contrató a 300 chilenos y el gasto realizado alcanzó los 4 millones de dólares.

Producciones como esas es la que busca atraer la Comisión Fílmica de Chile (FCCh, por sus siglas en inglés), parte del nuevo Ministerio de las

Culturas, las Artes y el Patrimonio, y que desde 2011 trabaja para convertir al país en un escenario ideal para la realización de proyectos audiovisuales nacionales e internacionales de alto impacto.

“Chile tiene condiciones naturales, como su diversidad geográfica con locaciones variadas y accesibles, pero para convertirse en un paraíso de rodajes, es necesario hacer la industria mucho más competitiva”, dice Joyce Zylberberg, directora del organismo. Esto, ya que al analizar las razones por las cuales las grandes producciones deciden filmar en otros países, se obtiene

The body was created by the Ministry for Culture, Heritage and the Arts, and has, since 2011, worked on making Chile the perfect place to carry out large-scale filmmaking projects, whether domestic or international.

“El 30 por ciento lo tenemos ganado porque tenemos de todo, muy cerca y con muy buenas condiciones. Sin embargo, para la otra parte se requiere contar con los incentivos necesarios que otros países ya han implementado”, explica.

Con esto, no solo se busca contribuir al desarrollo de la industria, sino también extender a la comunidad los beneficios que esto conlleva. Según datos de la FCCh, el 30 por ciento de la inversión de una producción audiovisual recae en la locación prevista. Así, la generación de empleo directo en el sector audiovisual podría aumentar en 46 por ciento en los próximos cinco años, y además generar un fuerte impacto en la promoción de los destinos turísticos.

LAS VENTAJAS DE CHILE La Comisión Fílmica de Chile –que está acreditada ante la Association of Film Commissioners International (AFCI), la principal asociación internacional, que

This reasoning comes from the justifications given by important filmmakers for deciding whether or not to film abroad. Thirty percent mention script compatibility, while seventy percent talk of financial reasons.

“We can easily win over that 30 percent because we have it all: all accessible and in great condition.

Nevertheless, to get to that other seventy percent we have to provide financial incentives, just as other countries have”, she explains.

The idea, however, is not only to give the industry a boost, but also to extend the benefits it brings to the community at large. According to data from FCCh, 30% of investment from a film production is injected into the local community. If this is true, the number of people directly employed by the film industry could increase by 46% over the next 5 years, and a boom in the industry could also have a great impact in local tourism.

Dado su eficiencia, seguridad y modernidad, a lo que se suma su mano de obra especializada y su tecnología de primer nivel, Chile ya ha ganado terreno, lo que poco a poco se ha ido complementando con programas como “Chile Film Friendly”, suscrito por el organismo con distintos municipios –entre ellos, Providencia, Valparaíso, Concepción y Puerto Montt– con el fin de asegurar mejores condiciones para realizar producciones, estableciendo por ejemplo, protocolos estandarizados para el otorgamiento de permisos.

Recientemente, y tras un convenio firmado con Aduanas de Chile, las producciones internacionales que requieran internar vehículos para grabar, y que cuenten con patrocinio de la FCCh, podrán ser liberadas del pago de tasas y garantías. Desde agosto pasado, además, se cuenta con un Programa Piloto para Producciones Audiovisuales de Alto Impacto en Chile, desarrollado en conjunto con Corfo, el que permitirá que proyectos audiovisuales –que superen una inversión de 2 millones de dólares– puedan acceder a una devolución de hasta un 30 por ciento de los gastos hechos en el país.

Chile’s Advantages Film Commission Chile –which is accredited by the Association of Film Commissioners International (AFCI), the largest association of its kind, grouping 300 commissions from around the world- works together with a number of public and private organisations to set the necessary conditions for the development of programmes that will help make Chile a haven for filmmakers.

Thanks to its efficiency, safety and modernity, and its specialised workforce and top-level technology, Chile has already made some headway, and added to this with new programmes such as “Chile Film Friendly”, which involves a number of local councils -such as Providencia, Valparaiso, Concepción and Puerto Monttand aids them in creating the best possible conditions for film production. Among other things, goals include standardising protocols and reducing the red tape around filming permits.

Recently, and after signing an agreement with the Chilean Customs Office, international film crews that need to bring in special vehicles (and have the backing of FCCh) can do so without paying special fees and insurance. August, furthermore, saw the launch of a Pilot Programme for High-Impact Film Productions in Chile, developed in coalition with Corfo, which will help film productions valued at over USD 2 million to gain a return of up to 30% on all expenses made in Chile.

Joyce Zylberberg points out that, for now, as it’s a pilot programme, its scope will be limited, but will help generate case studies that, she says, will show how projects such as this can have a great impact. “Our

largo de Chile, ya que “por una parte se potencia el turismo, la economía y la difusión de paisajes y geografías realmente únicas y, por otra, se fomenta el trabajo de nuestros artistas, dinamizando aún más el sector en las regiones”.

Para potenciar dicho trabajo, desde fines del año pasado se realizó una convocatoria para establecer proyectos de Comisiones Fílmicas Regionales en siete zonas del país: Antofagasta, Atacama, Biobío, La Araucanía, Los Ríos, Los Lagos y Magallanes, las que se suman a la ya existente en Valparaíso. “Teníamos la necesidad de poder activar más localmente los territorios de Chile, y qué mejor que hacerlo desde las mismas regiones”, sostiene la directora de la FCCh. Los proyectos están recién en su etapa de formación, y la idea es que al igual que la Comisión Fílmica de Chile, que desarrolló un directorio de servicios y un catálogo de locaciones, cada oficina regional haga el mismo trabajo, pero desde un punto de vista más local. Con esto, se espera seguir aumentando el número de locaciones (que pueden ser recorridas desde

To push for this goal, at the end of last year, FCCh put out a call to set up projects for Regional Film Commissions in seven regions throughout Chile: Antofagasta, Atacama, Biobío, La Araucanía, Los Ríos, Los Lagos and Magallanes, to add to the one regional body that already existed in Valparaíso. “We saw the need to encourage more localised activity throughout Chile, and the best way to do it was to set up regional bodies”, says the director of FCCh. These projects are still in their early stages, and the idea is that they support Film Commission Chile in generating a portfolio of services and shooting locations, this time from a much more localised perspective. This will hopefully increase the total number of recommended locations across Chile (which can be visited online at the FCCh website). Once the catalogue of public locations is drawn up, they aim to launch a platform wherein private landowners can put forward recommendations.

I hadn’t been to Lima for more than 10 years, and the biggest surprise was the Barranco district. It’s now full of design stores, cafes, and art galleries; it’s full of life and is ideal for a sunset stroll.

“TRAVELLING CLASSROOM” EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMME

Nos sumamos al desafío de aprender viajando We’re joining the push for educational travel MÁS DE TRES MIL ALUMNOS SE HAN VISTO BENEFICIADOS CON ESTA INICIATIVA QUE INVITA A LOS JÓVENES DE ESCUELAS MUNICIPALES A RECORRER EL PAÍS Y CONOCER EN TERRENO DIFERENTES RINCONES DE CHILE. / MORE THAN THREE THOUSAND STUDENTS HAVE ALREADY BENEFITTED FROM THIS INITIATIVE, WHICH INVITES YOUNG PEOPLE FROM PUBLIC SCHOOLS TO TRAVEL AROUND THE COUNTRY AND EXPERIENCE DIFFERENT PARTS OF CHILE FIRST HAND.

Con el objetivo de generar nuevas instancias de aprendizaje, a través del desarrollo de distintas actividades de profundización en la formación general, SKY, en conjunto con las municipalidades de La Reina, Los Sauces y Lautaro –la primera de la Región Metropolitana y las dos últimas de La Araucanía–, desarrollaron por segundo año consecutivo el programa “Aula en Terreno”, que busca enseñar a través de experiencias en primera persona diferen tes conocimientos como geografía, historia y naturaleza.

Ya son más de tres mil jóvenes estudiantes que han tenido la oportunidad de recorrer Santiago, Valparaíso, Viña del Mar, Capitán Pastene, Purén y Temuco en busca de historias y personajes que han dado forma a la historia de Chile, aprovechando la oportunidad de conocer aspectos geológicos, demográficos y culturales de cada punto que visitaron.

Un aspecto no menos importante, es la oportunidad que tienen estos jóvenes, no solo de conocer lugares de gran valor patrimonial en terreno, sino que también – en un número importante de casos– de viajar por primera vez en avión, compartiendo con los tripulantes de Sky y disfrutando Chile desde una perspectiva nueva, a más de 11 mil metros de altura.

The objective is to create a new type of learning experience, wherein a variety of different activities contribute to children’s overall education. SKY, together with the municipalities of La Reina (in Santiago), Los Sauces and Lautaro (both in Chile’s La Araucanía Region), is carrying out its “Travelling Classroom” programme for the second year running, in an effort to get kids up close to the content they see at school in classes like geography, history and environmental studies.

More than three thousand schoolchildren have now had the chance to travel to Santiago, Valparaíso, Viña del Mar, Capitán Pastene, Purén and Temuco in search of the histories and characters who have shaped the country we live in, and to study the many other fascinating details of each region such as geology, demographics and culture.

It’s also important to point out that, besides the chance to discover Chile's rich national heritage in person, for many of these youngsters it will be the first time they travel anywhere by plane. Our SKY crewmembers will be proud to join them as they look out over their country from a brand new perspective, and to help make their experience at 11 thousand metres an unforgettable one.

#LA TIERRA DESDE SKY No me canso de ver el cruce de los Andes cada vez que tengo la suerte de volar a Buenos Aires.

Esta foto es de mediados de octubre pasado, ya con menos nieve, pero la cordillera siempre impacta.

I’ll never get tired of seeing the Andes when I’m lucky enough to fly out to Buenos Aires, which is why I always ask for a window seat. I took this photo in October. A lot of the snow had melted, but the mountains are still stunning.

#MIDESTINOSKY Torres del Paine Muchas veces vi fotos de Las Torres del Paine, pero no fue hasta ver con mis propios ojos esas montañas que pude dimensionar su belleza. Realmente: uno de los paisajes más hermosos que he visto en mi vida.

I had always seen photos and TV programmes of the Torres del Paine, but it wasn’t until I saw them with my own eyes that I was able to really appreciate their beauty. Truly: one of the most unforgettable sights I have ever seen.

—Mi viaje a Río de Janeiro junto a mi madre, el año 83. Inexpertos y con algo de miedo.

—¿Destinos urbanos o naturaleza?

—Los urbanos son interesantes, ya que definen la personalidad y el estilo de una ciudad, pero prefiero estar cerca de la naturaleza. Me conectan con lo esencial y le pone pausa a la vida. Bajo las revoluciones.

—¿Museos o parques?

—Claramente los parques, ja-ja-ja.

A excepción del museo del Louvre y Del Prado en Europa.

—¿Mantel largo o comida callejera?

—Las picadas, lejos. La comida callejera tienen un sabor con identidad.

—¿Viajar solo o acompañado?

—Soy un viajero acompañado.

Y con mi esposa. Somos cómplices de viajes inolvidables.

—¿Cómo planificas tus viajes?

—Vivo pensando en un destino nuevo.

Amo viajar. Cada año tengo una nueva excusa para eso. Me queda el 90 por ciento del mundo por conocer.

— My trip to Rio de Janeiro with my mother, in 1983. We were travelling novices, and were quite nervous.

—Cities or nature?

—Cities are interesting, as each one has its own personality and style, but I’d rather be close to nature. You can get back in touch with yourself, and take a break from life. Wind down.

—Museums or parks?

—Parks, of course, ha-ha-ha.

Except for the Louvre and the Del Prado in Europe.

—Fine dining or street food?

—Street food, all the way.

Street food has its own identity.

—Travelling alone or with company?

—I like to travel with company.

With my wife. We’ve had some unforgettable trips together.

—How do you plan your trips?

— I’m always thinking about the next destination. I love travelling. Every year there’s a new excuse to do it. I still have to discover about 90% of the world.

—What’s the first thing you pack in your suitcase?

—My underwear, ha-ha-ha.

They decide how many days I’ll stay in one place.

—Do you bring things back for friends?

—I hate it when people ask me to bring things: it’s a real pain. But I always bring gifts.

I spontaneously remember people I love.
