Layer Farm Guide
Presentation of the book The main objective of this guide is to address the various aspects of egg production from a global point of view, drawing from the authors’ experience. The high demand for the production of eggs to meet the need of the fast increasing human population requires careful consideration concerning the various aspects of the egg industry that should be known to producers, field technicians and veterinarians. Laying hens can produce many eggs and have a long life cycle if they are they are well managed and their needs are met. This is why technical knowledge plays a very important role in increasing production efficiency. This book describes different egg production systems worldwide and presents the main characteristics of different breeds and lines of laying hens. An updated review of the most important management practices throughout the laying cycle is also included in an illustrated and didactic method. The book also reviews waste management practices and their impact on the environment in an accessible way for readers.

The author Victor Fernando Buttow Roll Victor Roll is an agricultural engineer and holds a master’s degree in animal nutrition from the Federal University of Pelotas (UFPEL), Brazil. He obtained his PhD from the University of Zaragoza, Spain, where he worked on the nutritional management, behaviour, welfare and microbiological quality of eggs of layer hens housed in enriched cages. He was a postdoctoral fellow in animal production at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, where he collaborated on projects evaluating the nutritional value of esterified fatty acid oils in broiler diets and assessing the use of new probiotics to improve the health status of animals experimentally infected with Salmonella Typhimurium. He is currently an associate professor at the UFPEL where he teaches graduate and postgraduate students in animal science. He was awarded a research scholarship in the field of animal production and collaborates with the UFPEL Poultry and Pig Research Group (GEASPEL). He also collaborates on projects with the pig and poultry division of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA-CNPSA). He advises Scientific Initiation fellows as well as master’s, PhD and postgraduate students in the areas of animal nutrition and production. In the past five years he has published 24 articles in Brazilian and international journals, edited three books and authored nine book chapters. He currently advises four PhD students and one master’s degree student. He was coordinator of the UFPEL postgraduate programme in animal science (master’s degree and PhD) from 2010 to 2013. He has wide experience in animal science, more specifically animal production and nutrition (broilers, quail, pigs and horses), behaviour and welfare, and specialises in poultry litter management and probiotic and oil use in animal nutrition.
