ESSENTIAL G IDES ON CATTLE FARMING

Field Necropsy Most relevant lesions Valentín Pérez Pérez Juan Francisco García Marín Julio Benavides Silván

This book provides images of the most relevant lesions that may be found during the necropsy of both calves and adult cattle, explaining their main characteristics and relating them to their cause. It includes information about the organ systems that are most easily accessible for performing necropsy in the field and where lesions are more commonly observed.

Field Necropsy

Introduction Performing necropsies and examining gross lesions are diagnostic procedures widely used in veterinary medicine in cattle. The postmortem study and correct identification of the lesions serve, in many cases, to guide the diagnosis of the condition affecting the animal. Gross lesions alone are rarely fully diagnostic. However, in many cases, when considering the group of lesions observed in an animal, these can be associated with specific pathological processes. Therefore, an understanding of the morphological alterations that can be identified during visual necropsy and their relationship with the causes leading to them can be of great value in daily clinical practice in ruminants. The objective of this practical book is to provide images of the most relevant lesions that may be found during the necropsy of both calves and adult cattle, and to explain their main characteristics and relate them to their cause. This book has been designed so readers can quickly identify the lesions featured in the images, which are accompanied by brief descriptive texts together with information on the associated causes. This will provide a starting point for the diagnostic process, which will often require the use of complementary diagnostic techniques. The images shown were taken by the authors during the many years they spent performing necropsies for diagnostic purposes. Given the format and inherent limitations of a book of these characteristics, a comprehensive review of all possible macroscopic alterations that may be identified during a necropsy in cattle is not performed. The organ systems selected are those that are most easily accessible when performing a field necropsy and where lesions usually occur more frequently. Therefore, the work is divided into several chapters in which the lesions are grouped together, according to the organs where they are found. The lesions characteristic of a disease will be listed, regardless of their location, in the chapter corresponding to where the greatest number of alterations, or the most significant ones, of the disease in question are found. This book is aimed at all professionals interested in bovine diseases and follows a highly practical approach. We hope it will contribute to making the work of cattle veterinarians easier.

The authors Valentín Pérez Pérez Valentín Pérez is a lecturer and researcher at the Animal Health Department of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of León (ULE), Spain, and at the Institute of Mountain Livestock Farming (CSIC-ULE). He holds a degree and a PhD in veterinary medicine from the University of Zaragoza and has worked at, among other centres, the Moredun Research Institute (Edinburgh, United Kingdom) and the ULE since 1995. He has also spent time at the universities of Cornell and California, Davis (United States), where he furthered his knowledge of ruminant pathology. He is a diplomate of the European College of Small Ruminant Animal Health and Management (ECSRHM) and the European College of Veterinary Pathologists (ECVP). Since 1995 he has worked in the diagnostic service of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of León, mainly in the field of ruminant necropsy. His research focuses on diseases caused by intracellular infectious agents in ruminants, mainly those caused by mycobacteria (paratuberculosis). He also provides technical assistance to and conducts research work for several pharmaceutical companies, veterinary practices and livestock associations. He has published more than 175 research articles and articles in specialist magazines, many of them on lesion diagnosis, funded by regional, national and European projects, and has been the principal investigator for several of them. He has served on the scientific committee of several national and international congresses, and is a member of several scientific associations, such as the Spanish National Association of Specialists in Bovine Medicine (Anembe), the Spanish Society for Sheep and Goat Husbandry (SEOC), and the Spanish and European societies of veterinary pathology (SEAPV and ESVP, respectively).

Juan Francisco García Marín Juan Francisco García Marín obtained his degree and PhD from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Zaragoza and is currently working at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of León, of which he is also the head. He has furthered his training at different centres in Europe and the United States. His work focuses on ruminant diseases, more particularly their histopathological diagnosis. He therefore has extensive experience in performing necropsies and interpreting lesions. He is a diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Pathologists (ECVP). His research work focuses on diseases caused by mycobacteria in ruminants, mainly tuberculosis and paratuberculosis, as well as maedi-visna in sheep. He is the author of a large number of scientific publications, many of which address aspects of lesion diagnosis. He has participated in both national and European research projects, as well as in many important dissemination activities aimed at the veterinary sector throughout his career. He is a member of several scientific associations, including the national and European societies of veterinary pathology.

Julio Benavides Silván Julio Benavides obtained his degree in veterinary medicine from the University of León, where he also earned his PhD for his study of the characteristic lesions and pathogenesis of ovine maedi-visna. While working on his doctoral thesis, he collaborated with the histopathological diagnostic service of the University of León, which mainly dealt with cases in ruminants. Between 2007 and 2010 he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Moredun Research Institute (Edinburgh, UK). During this period he participated in numerous research projects on the pathogenesis and development of lesions in both viral (louping-ill or malignant catarrhal fever) and protozoan (toxoplasmosis, neosporosis, or sarcosporidiosis) diseases in ruminants. He also collaborated with the ruminant foetal pathology and neurological disorders diagnostic service. In 2011 he joined the Institute of Mountain Livestock Farming (Instituto de Ganadería de Montaña, a joint centre between the Spanish National Research Council [CSIC] and the University of León), first working as a postdoctoral researcher, and since 2017 as a senior scientist. His research focuses on the analysis of the host– pathogen relationship in different diseases of interest in ruminants, mainly toxoplasmosis, neosporosis and paratuberculosis. He has participated in numerous national and international projects in this field, and authored or coauthored more than 70 scientific publications and numerous communications in scientific congresses.
