This new title in the Per Owner Educational Atlas series is dedicated to endocrinology in cats and dogs. The information and explanations veterinary clinicians sometimes have to convey in this specialised area can prove particularly complicated and hard to understand, which is why this book will serve as a very helpful tool for communicating with the pet owner.

Presentation of the book

Communication between the veterinary surgeon and owners during endocrinology consultations requires the transfer of information about diseases and their diagnosis, treatment, and management, some of which may be quite complicated. However, the vet must ensure pet owners understand all the information, as their participation is essential in guaranteeing the successful management of endocrine disorders in their pets. To this end, this atlas will be very helpful thanks to its rich, clear, and accurate illustrations and the authors’ concise text. The book is made up of full-page illustrations organised in thematic blocks. The first one deals with the anatomy and physiology of the endocrine system. In the second block we introduce various endocrine disorders which have been classified as diseases affecting the hypothalamus–pituitary axis, the thyroid gland, the parathyroid glands, the adrenal glands, and the endocrine pancreas. The third block addresses the concepts of overweight and obesity, assessing obese patients, and the consequences and treatment of obesity. The fourth block of illustrations is dedicated to the diagnostic tests used in endocrinology, covering both laboratory and imaging diagnosis. Finally, the fifth block includes a detailed explanation of the most important clinical signs common to various endocrine disorders.

Reviewers M.ª Carmen Marca Andrés Dr Marca earned her degree and PhD in veterinary medicine at the University of Zaragoza (Unizar) and lectures in general and medical pathology at the Animal Pathology Department within Unizar’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Her research activity has mainly focused on small animals; she is currently teaching in the Unizar Veterinary Teaching Hospital’s Internal Medicine Service and for several years has assumed joint responsibility for the hospital’s endocrinology consultations. María Carmen is a member of the Spanish Small Animal Veterinary Association (AVEPA), the European Society of Veterinary Endocrinology (ESVE), and the Society for Comparative Endocrinology (SCE).
Araceli Loste Montoya Dr Loste also obtained a degree and PhD in veterinary medicine at the University of Zaragoza (Unizar). She lectures within the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and exercises clinical practice at the Unizar Veterinary Teaching Hospital, where she is the joint head of the Endocrinology Service. She was a visiting fellow at the University of Agricultural Sciences (Bogotá, Colombia) and the Angell Animal Medical Center (Boston, USA). Dr Loste is a member of the European Society of Veterinary Endocrinology (ESVE) and the Society for Comparative Endocrinology (SCE); she is also AVEPA-certified in internal medicine (AVEPA is the Spanish Small Animal Veterinary Association). She sits on the committee of experts for ESVE’s project ALIVE (Agreeing Language In Veterinary Endocrinology), which aims to harmonise terminology in endocrinology.
Marta Borobia Frías Dr Borobia earned her degree and PhD in veterinary medicine at the University of Zaragoza (Unizar). She is an assistant lecturer and postdoctoral researcher in the Animal Pathology Department belonging to Unizar’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. She has spent time as a visiting researcher within the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the Technical University of Lisbon and has worked in the Unizar Veterinary Teaching Hospital’s Endocrinology Service since its creation in 2009. Marta is a member of the Spanish Small Animal Veterinary Association (AVEPA). She is currently studying for the General Practitioner Certificate in Small Animal Medicine awarded by the European School of Veterinary Postgraduate Studies (ESVPS).

ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY OF THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
1 Endocrine system The endocrine system is made up of a group of glands of internal secretion that are required to produce a variety of hormones, which then regulate a plethora of bodily functions once they are released into the bloodstream. It includes: ■
■
Hormones: biochemical messengers secreted into the blood or extracellular fluid by cells in the endocrine system. Hormone receptors: proteins located inside or in the membrane of effector cells which can bind with a specific hormone to induce a response in the effector cells.
The endocrine systems of both cats and dogs are comprised of the same glands as those shared, in general, by all mammals.
Hormone–receptor binding Hormone Effector cell Hypothalamus and pituitary gland Adrenal glands
Ovaries (females)
Testicles (males) Thyroid and parathyroid glands
Endocrine pancreas

22 Assessing obese patients.
Anamnesis and clinical history The assessment should start with a complete anamnesis and review of the clinical record to identify any risk factors that may contribute, directly or indirectly, to the development of overweight or obesity. The risk factors could depend on the animal, diet, environment, owner or carer, or any drug therapies or surgical interventions.
Mixed-breed cats and dogs can also develop obesity. Predisposed breeds: ■ Labrador Retriever ■ Golden Retriever ■ Cocker Spaniel ■ Yorkshire Terrier
Comorbidities: ■ Hypothyroidism ■ Hyperadrenocorticism
Age: Adults/elderly (hypertrophic) ■ Young animals (hyperplastic) ■
Predisposed breeds: Domestic shorthair cat.

OVERWEIGHT AND OBESITY
39
Eating too many treats equates to a large calorie intake, which contributes to weight gain.
Key points Related to the environment: ■ Urban/rural ■ Apartment/house ■ Number of walks per day ■ Exercise level ■ Presence of other animals ■ Hours spent alone ■ Age, dietary habits, and owner’s level of activity Diet: Homemade food ■ Commercial food (dry or moist) ■ Leftovers ■ Treats and sweets ■
Feeding regimen: Ad libitum ■ Once a day ■ Twice a day ■ How is the amount measured? ■ Number of treats per day ■
Following castration, animals have a greater appetite and become less active. It is essential to adjust the type of diet to avoid developing obesity.
