PORT PRINCE, Haiti .- It was breakfast in one of the most squalid slums of Haiti and Charlene Dumas ate mud. With the increase in food prices in the world, many of the poorest people could not even buy a bowl of rice per day. And some resort to desperate measures to deceive hunger. Charlene, who at the age of 16 has a little son of a month, has resorted to a traditional remedy for Haitian pressing hunger: cookies made with dry land in the central plateau of the country. The mud has been long favored by pregnant women and children as a source of calcium and antacid. But in places like Cite Soleil, the crowded neighborhood misérrimo next to the ocean where Charlene shares a tworoom house with his five brothers and two parents unemployed, cookies made with dirt, salt and butter plant have become a regular source of livelihood . “When my mother not cooking anything, I have to eat three times a

Can Lindsay save herself from Britneyville? Lohan has talent, but may end up like the pop star if she doesn’t shape up

indsay Lohan is no Britney Spears. At least not yet. She should be ecstatic.
Lindsay just got out of rehab, but it seems she has been in almost as many times as she’s been on a movie set. Even if the numbers are in the same ballpark, that’s an extremely poor ratio. The difference is that in rehab, they make you show up and on time — or else they kick you out. emember all the hype before last September’s MTV Video Music Awards? All the tabloids buzzed about Britney Spears’ comeback performance, masterminded by illusionist Criss Angel. In the end, viewers were left with an anything-but-magical “dance” routine. Now, in an interview with the L.A. Times, Criss reveals what could have been. With Britney, I presented concepts to create, within her performance, illusions that would happen in the open,” the cable conjurer told the paper. “You would see Britney and then she would split into two Britneys and then four Britneys with no boxes or covers.” If that weren’t enough, Criss claims he would have levitated Brit over the audience. “It was going to be really visual moments that were all epic tableaux that were beautiful, artistic, elegant and, most important,
unique — things MTV hasn’t seen in music. I wanted to captivate people in the moment.” So, given all the planned razzmatazz, what went wrong? “Britney is really strong with her own ideas,” Criss said, pointing out the now obvious. “And what I had planned wasn’t an easy thing to do and would have required a lot of rehearsals. Ultimately, I told her I needed 100 percent commitment or I wasn’t going to be able to do this. … So, we explored it and she decided it wasn’t for her, and I completely understand.”

utism is a developmental disorder that some people are born with — it’s not something you can catch or pass along to someone else. It affects the brain and makes communicating and interacting with other people difficult. People who have autism often have delayed language development, prefer to spend time alone, and show less interest in making friends. Another characteristic of autism is what some people describe as “sensory overload”: Sounds seem louder, lights brighter, or smells stronger. Although many people with autism also have mental retardation, some are of average or high intelligence. Not everybody with autism has the exact same symptoms. Some people may have autism that is mild, whereas others may have autism that is more severe. Because it affects people differently, autism is known as a spectrum disorder. Two people with the same spectrum disorder may not act alike or have the same skills. As many as 1 in 500 people have autism, and it’s four times more common in guys than in girls. Although doctors do not know exactly what causes it, researchers believe autism is linked to differences in brain chemicals (neurotransmitters).
behavior or attention problems). Instead, people who have autism are taught skills that will help them do the things that are difficult for them. The best results are usually seen with children who begin treatment when they are very young, as soon as they are diagnosed.

They often do not make eye contact when you are talking to them. They also find it hard to join in a game or activity with other people. Perhaps the most difficult part of coping with autism is interacting with other people every day. Because the brain of a teen with autism works a little differently, learning to communicate can be like learning a foreign language. This can make it hard for people with autism to express themselves or for other people to understand them, so just talking with a classmate becomes stressful and frustrating. Despite all the day-to-day hurdles, though, many people with autism lead fulfilling, happy lives on their own or with help from friends and family. Most teens with autism like school, and some can attend regular classes with everyone else. They have individual tastes and enjoy different activities, just like you do. Some people with autism go on to vocational school or college, get married, and have successful careers. Consider Temple Grandin, for example. Despite having autism, she was able to earn a PhD and become a college professor. She’s even written a book about her experience called Thinking in Pictures: And Other Reports from My Life with Autism. Although she still struggles with the disorder almost daily, she leads a “normal” life, just like many other people with autism.

or many teenagers, one of the hardest questions to answer is, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” People may seem to be asking you this question all the time. They are asking you to pick your major in college, decide where you want to go to school, decide what you want to do with your life... The question you might have is, “How the heck should I know???”

oday, coffee is one of the most popular beverages worldwide. It is usual in our culture to drink unless once a day, but behind the cup of coffee we find an entire proceess of elaboration. Firstable we have to be clear where it comes and what it is. Coffee is a widely consumed stimulant beverage prepared from roasted seeds, commonly called beans, of the coffee plant. These are cultivated in Latin America, southeast Asia, and Africa. Once ripe, coffee berries are picked, processed, and dried. Coffee is an important export commodity. Many studies have examined the relationship between coffee consumption and certain medical conditions; whether the effects of coffee are positive or negative is still disputed. The seed of coffee grows in an evergreen shrub or small tree that may grow 5 meters tall when unpruned.
The leaves are dark green and glossy, usually 10–15 centimeters long and 6.0 centimeters wide. It produces clusters of fragrant, white flowers that bloom simultaneously. The fruit berry is oval, about 1.5 centimeters long, and green when immature, but ripens to yellow, then crimson, becoming black on drying. Each berry usually contains two seeds. Berries ripen in seven to nine months. Coffee berries and their seeds undergo multi-step processing before they become the roasted coffee. First, coffee berries are picked, generally by hand. Then, the flesh of the berry is removed and the seeds—usually called beans—are fermented to remove the slimy layer of mucilage still present on the bean. When the fermentation is finished, the beans are washed with large quantities of fresh water to remove the fermentation residue. Finally the seeds are dried and sorted and labeled as green coffee beans.
The next step in the process is the roasting of the green coffee. All coffee is roasted before it is consumed. It can be sold roasted by the supplier, or it can be home roasted. Coffee appears to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, heart disease, diabetes mellitus type 2, cirrhosis of the liver, and gout. Some health effects are due to the caffeine content of coffee, as the benefits are only observed in those who drink caffeinated coffee, while others appear to be due to other components. For example, the antioxidants in coffee prevent free radicals from causing cell damage. Coffee’s negative health effects are mostly due to its caffeine content. Nevertheless, the mainstream view of medical experts is that drinking three 8-ounce cups of coffee per day does not have significant health risks for adults. Depending on the type of coffee and method of preparation, the caffeine content of a single serving can vary greatly.
