News By: Ali O’Donnell Taking A Stand to Come Together According to CNN Wire, there were “Mandatory evacuations in effect as Southern California fires spread.” Using social media, fire and police departments used Twitter to share how much the fire was spreading and how they were containing it. The Orange County fire authorities had reported of no known injuries yet houses were threatened and destroyed. Since this fire was reaching so many areas from Orange County, certain spots of Corona and Norco in Riverside, schools such as Canyon High School and El Modena High school opened up their gyms as local evacuation centers. Since the fire was so severe in certain areas in Corona, authorities recommended and forced schools along with roads to be closed in the Corona Norco Unified School district. Having sen so much damage being done by these California fires, most did not completely believe that this was a “vegetation fire.” 1

What Do We Know? Las Vegas • We know there was a gun and

a man. • We know that there were

obviously, multiple gun shots meaning multiple deaths along with injuries. • We know this is wrong. • We know that this man shot

from his hotel room and was caught yet dead. • Does this bring justice or

satisfaction? • Of course not, this can not

explain the reasoning behind the actions or show the highest behind the murderer. • We found out later that 50

people are now dead. • We found out that now this is

the deadliest shooting in modern United States history. • CNN Wire reports about the

investigation “Police said the gunman fired on the crowd of about 22,000 people from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel.” • The reported gunshots lasted

for about 10-15 minutes yet the wounds will last a lifetime.

The Orange County register reported that police were going to “Orange County to investigate Canyon 2 fire response, missteps.” Information showing that the fires were reported around 8:30am on the 91 freeway. Determining jurisdiction issues, that pushed back time that could have been used to save people from the fire or their houses. Being evacuated from my own home, even though my house was fine, I would have hoped everyone could have come together quicker so certain areas would not have even needed to evacuate, On top with trying to stop the fires, policemen would try and calm the 911 calls down by denying there was a fire in the first place. That is ridiculous considering people could see the fire in their backyard. the worst part was, this is not the first time a fire was denied. On December 2nd, in 2016, Historic events reported of a “Warehouse Fired Kills 30 in California.” Showing some relevance, this brings back tragic memories of what could have been total success. Weird how this process was noted as very tricky yet the reason for the somewhat late response was due to who would actually take the call or if they denied the fire in the first place. Interesting enough, you would think that looking at back mistakes they would be able to finally agree just to come together sooner, we could have saved at last another person’s life. Will they ever get past disputes in the long run instead of arguing about jurisdiction and fight together? I sure hope so!

Looking Past the Money PR Newswire reports of “JJ Watt’s YouCaring for Hurricane Harvey” This foundation raised over “$11 Million, Enlist Drake, Breaks Records at Largest, fastest Charitable Crowdfunding Campaign Ever” Looking past the money, we see that this was an opportunity to bring people together to not only help but united the states to bring hope to what is left from Hurricane Harvey. The majority of Americans paid less than $100 yet we still hit the record straight with showing how a little bit of effort can go a long way. 2

Along with the JJ Watt campaign, the foundation known as YouCaring is supporting the Hurricane Harvey disaster. Looking at this, the foundation of the foundation is

people, we the people did this.

We are the ones that give the others hope to go on. We can help them in Houston, so we did.

Gun or Man? CNN Wire reports “5 Things for November 6: Texas church shooting.” Number 1 being the shooting, human has killed at least 26 people in a church shooting in Texas. Number 2 being the victims, the First Baptist Church was a small Texas Church full of wonderful people.

First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs, Texas

Victims ranged from being 5 years old going up to 72 years old. One 14 year old, the pastor’s daughter, being shot dead. Number 3 being the suspect, Devin Patrick Kelley. Number 4 being the reaction. As you can imagine, there was a huge reaction not only in the church but U.S. citizens stood next to their peers trying to help them cope with what happened.

Outdoor memorial for victims

Then number 5, being he investigation, was this the gun’s fault or the man? The president ruled this being a mental issue rather than the gun with is agreeable. Typically a gun needs someone to shoot it rather than stand up on it’s own & shoot itself. The worst part is, Kelley was allegeable to buy the gun because nothing showed up on his background check.

Missions Trips By: Kaitlyn Weber Foreign Country Experiences Orange Lutheran offers mission trips to foreign locations such as Argentina and Cambodia. Every year here at Orange Lutheran, many people go on the mission trips that this school offers because it brings them closer to God. The foreign mission trips are a great way to experience many different cultures and see things you may have never seen before. According to the Biodiversity Data Journal, Foreign trips can provide information to people who don’t know what it’s like to live in poverty and help experience how life is for these people living there. “When you come and serve in Catadupa, you are“preaching the Gospel in a practical way,” says Pastor Gordon from Jamaica. Experiencing these trips is a great opportunity to live in their shoes for once in your life. This also brings joy to the people living there, especially the children. Argentina and Cambodia are areas with a lot of poverty and the people living there have hardly anything. These people keep pushing on for their families and try to give them what they have and going these on a mission trip provides them with happiness.

Fall NART Orange Lutheran also provides trips to the Native American Reserve in Bishop, California. These Native American Reserves are deep in poverty and need help. Orange Lutheran then steps in and helps these reserves by bringing them food and water, helping them clean, and even playing with the children. According to Avens articles, this trip helps bring a smile on the Native Americans faces and shows others how good they actually live. “I liked getting to know people and become closer together and just build a community which was really awesome to be a part of ” said Hannah Rahn who is a Senior at Orange Lutheran High School. Going on this trip helps others understand how to help others and how to do the right thing by showing these people you care. The Native Americans in Bishop like when Orange Lutheran students come to visit because 4

they see how much we care. This trip also brings many people together by showing and receiving God’s grace together. The students also get to show God’s grace with the Native Americans.

Spring NART Students from Orange Lutheran go back to Bishop, California during the Spring to help the Native Americans out one last time during the year. During this trip the students help build things and bring the Natives food and water. In this reserve that the students visit, the Natives love the help that the students provide them with. According to Avens Article, the Native Americans don’t have much so when people go and visit this reserve they get really happy and offer homemade arts back to the people visiting. “ I learned how to step out of my comfort zone and be willing to help no matter what task is even if it doesn’t make sense at the time, there is a bigger picture in all of it” says Shannon Rhodes from Orange Lutheran High School. This trip provides not only helping others but meeting new people and making friends for life. Sharing Gods grace with your fellow classmates brings everyone closer together. Going on this trip is an experience that you will never forget. It helps you become a better person and help others around you.

Appalachia Appalachia is a great experience to get in touch with your inner being and experience what poverty really is. The people that live in Appalachia live in poverty, which means they can not afford basic things that most of us have such as a house or somewhere to live, clothes, or even shoes. Most of the children from Appalachia walk barefoot because they either don’t have shoes or they save their only pair for a special occasion such as Church or school. This trip helps you come together with others around you and helps you be a better person by helping others. I have never been on this trip but some of my friends have gone and they say it is life changing. According to an article from “A View from Appalachia: Living Below the Poverty Line” many parts of Appalachia are very low in poverty and any help that they can get to fix some of the damaged houses and build bridges over rivers is incredible. I personally think that this trip would be such a great experience for anyone to do in their lifetime because I have seen many people come back from this trip a changed person. If you ever get the opportunity to join this trip I would 100% suggest it because it is truly an experience of a lifetime. According to “The Washington Post” this trip really helps the people that live 5

in Appalachia because it makes them happy to see that so many people care about them an want to help better their community. I wasn’t able to join this amazing trip but hopefully one day I will get to experience this once in a lifetime opportunity. Appalachia needs people to go and help them build houses and give out food and water to the people in need. This trip is also very heart warming because when helping these people out, it makes them feel loved which also makes you feel really good inside. According to an article in “there is no poverty in faith in Appalachia” it says that the faith that the helpers bring to the families living in Appalachia is amazing because it helps them come together and praise God.

Sports By: Nicole Bean Astros Build Up In 2014 the Houston Astros were the worst team in all of baseball. Finishing the 2014 season with the losing record of 70-92 (.432), Sports Illustrated magazine predicted the Astros would the World Series in 2017, Business Insider notes. After four consecutive years of finishing in last from 2011-2014, the Houston Astros began the most impressive rebuilding process. Having the worst baseball record nobody believed the Astros even had a chance of making it to the postseason in 2017. According to New York Times, in 2011 the Astros hired Jeff Luhnow as their General Manager and was the first of three years the Astros were No. 1 for draft in June. In 2012, they drafted Carlos Correa, who has big hit for Astros. In 2013 and 1024 they drafted Mark Appel and Brady Aiken. Appel hasn’t been seen in majors since then and Aiken injured his elbow and was replaced \with Alex Bregman, current third baseman. Correa was only 17 when he was noticed by the organization playing for the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy. They brought him to Florida and used him for a scrimmage in spring training and signed him in the minors. Three years later he won the American League Rookie of the Year with a batting average of . 315, 24 homeruns and over 450 plate appearances. Bregman and Correa were both offered bonuses for their recommended draft slots of No. 1 and 2. In those years the Astros also brought in Lance McCullers Jr., Rio Ruiz and Daz Cameron. With

McCullers still as a current pitcher they traded Ruiz for catcher Evan Gattis and Cameron for pitcher Justin Verlander. Also in their system was George Springer, who the Astros hesitated to sign due to his record-breaking strikeout record. One thing they like about Springer was that he could hit hard if he struck out less at the time, not knowing he’d be the MVP of the 2017 World Series. Carlos Corea

Luhnow knew exactly what he was doing in order to make his team stronger. When a player seemed no longer valuable to the team he traded him. After the successful and predicted win for the Astros as the 2017 World Series Champs, Luhnow only has to worry about keeping his place as one of the best teams in baseball. Although, picking for the drafts seemed to have worked for the Astros, Luhnow said he would never want to repeat the cycle.

Olympic Snowboarding Alex Bregman

With the 2018 Winter Olympics only months away, everyone is making predictions of who teams will consist of and who will win, so here is snowboarding. In the freestyle snowboarding category it goes almost without doubt the Canada’s Mark McMorris is taking the gold medal. One catch is their struggling halfpipe performance, but other than that Canada is known for pushing limits in freestyle snowboarding with record-breaking new heights in just five years.

Justin Verlander

Also on Canad’s team is another fan favorite for the gold, Max Parrot. Parrot was one of the first riders to ever land a quadruple cork. His biggest weakness is in slopestyle and rails, unless he somehow performs quadruple corks off those too. Canada is also thriving in women’s snowboarding with Spencer O’Brien. If it weren’t for Jamie Anderson, O’Brien would be the female slopestyle rider in the era. According to Transworld Snowboarding, Canada has the best chance at winning for boarders.

NASCAR Cup

UCLA’s New Head Coach

NASCAR rankings have been posted and here your top five for Monster Energy’s NASCAR Cup Series standings for 2017: Martin Truex Jr., Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick, Brad Keselowski and Chase Elliott, respectively.

Within the last week UCLA has hired a new head coach for football, Chip Kelly. According to ESPN, Dan Guerrero, director of athletics, is “thrilled to welcome” Kelly as the head coach. He believes that with a five-year contract Kelly will bring UCLA back into the competition for the championships.

According to ESPN, Truex, Toyota driver, finished the season with a whopping 5040 points. He had 36 starts this season with 8 wins and 3 poles. In 19 races he ended in the top 5 and in 26 races he finished in the top 10. Ranked No. 1, Truex led in 2253 laps this season. In the last five games of the season Truex finished every race in the top 3.

While coaching for Oregon, Kelly averaged 44.7 points per game ESPN notes. He led the ducks into big bowls for years including 2 Rose Bowls, BCS title game, and the Fiesta Bowl. USC fans are worried to compete against UCLA now. With Kelly behind the UCLA lines they could become one of the best teams in the near future.

Cars By: Pierce Grosse The Big Three’s Battle for the Top The big three American car companies as everyone knows are Ford, GM, and Chrysler. What people might not know is that they have teams dedicated to designing and perfecting the perfect muscle car of the year to win over consumers. This is very common among all car companies in fact. Cars to these teams are somewhat of a trophy. If Ford makes a faster and better well rounded car they take pride in that and let everyone know it in their commercials. And the same to all other 8

November 29, 2017

companies if they made the best muscle car of the year or years to come. Now this year that we are having the Ford has released its 6th generation of the Mustang, GM has released also its 6th generation of the Camaro, and finally Chrysler has released its third generation of the Challenger.

Mustang:0-60 in 4.3 seconds, Quarter mile 12.8, horsepower 435 at the crank, 0-100 10.5 seconds, price new 43,000

Camaro:0-60 in 3.9 seconds, Quarter mile 12.3, horsepower 455 at the crank, 0-100 8.9 seconds, price new 47,000

For each of the three contenders there are many versions of each car, almost too many but in this battle we will be comparing the basic V8 platform. Which is the 5.0 Mustang(GT) the SS Camaro, and the Challenger Scat Pak. Each one of these cars has something different about them thus, each is better in a different area. The Challenger has a big body accompanied by a big motor to haul that boat around which means it is the most traditional muscle car for sale today. The Mustang got a new face lift and has been the best selling American sports car in Europe for the last 2 years. The Mustang also has a very high performing motor accompanied by a stunning exterior. Then we have the Camaro. Now the Camaro has been completely changed it has a whole new front and rear end. It has a bigger motor than the 2015 SS Camaro did and a brand new transmission. Now as you can imagine these three cars are close in the speed category. Well there are 3 things that make a car fast. Top speed, torque, and acceleration. Now torque is a rotating force that can get something spinning. So torque is what you want off the line. Then acceleration is how quickly your car can get going and the rate of how fast it speeds up. Then top speed is what the engine plateaus at and will not go any faster.

Hennessy is One of a Kind

Challenger:0-60 in 4.3 seconds, Quarter mile 12.7, horsepower 485 at the crank, 0-100 9.2

A certain company based out of Texas is a legendary name in the car industry. That name is Hennessy. Created and perfected by John Hennessy they take fast cars and make them faster because why not. They can take your 435 horsepower mustang and make it a 1,000 horsepower monster. Very few things will beat it on the streets except for another Hennessy car. 9

John has been drag racing all his life and has seen some pretty fast cars. And his visions was to give that drag racing feel to people all around the world. So far he has taken tuning and speed to a whole new level because of what he felt and loved. Thank you John for being a God sent man for all of us gear heads in the world.

The Demon Now there are very few cars in the world today that will send a shiver down your spine when you just hear the name. Or make your jaw drop when it flies by you on the freeway. Well there is a brand new car that will do both of those things. It is called the Dodge Demon. Now the Demon isn’t a standard car that people just want to take pictures of no. It is a street stripped muscle car that wants to be driven. This beast of a car has the most powerful V8 engine out of any other car to date. And it is the fastest gas powered car ever. The Demon is so fast that it got banned from the NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) From all racing because it was too fast. They said that Dodge crossed a line that isn’t supposed to be crossed. And Dodge’s response was a simple slap in the face to the NHRA of a poster saying, “Sorry, Not Sorry” This possessed car will do 0-30 in 1 second 0-60 in 2.3 seconds and 0-100 in 5.4 seconds. It is the only car to come stock out of the factory with drag radials and it has a supercharger that adds extra horsepower to the motor. This unholy car comes with a 6.2 liter V8 accompanied by a beastly 8 speed automatic transmission with a transbrake inside of the transmission. The only car to come stock with drag radials and a 2.7 liter supercharger that makes all of life scream when that thing comes to live. This car will launch at 1.8 Gs of force thrusting you into your seat. And also it does wheelies. The Demon is not a souped up version of the 707 horsepower hellcat no. This 840 horsepower beast is a brand new vision for Dodge. It is the idea of the perfect muscle car to be remembered for eternity and they have done an amazing job on it.

The Holy One To all the red neck American flag loving muscle car enthusiasts we can all agree that in order for something to be a muscle car it has the have the following things. A V8, loud exhaust, it has to be a bigger car, and it has to be made in America. Those 4 things are what make a muscle car. Now these days the big 3 have made some amazing cars but, only one has kept to the roots of the American blood flowing through it and that is the Dodge Challenger. The Challenger is a killer looking and performing car. Because muscle cars like to go in straight lines they don’t like turns. And the challenger hits all 4 points above and also loves going in straight lines. Now when you look at a mustang or Camaro you think oh wow that’s a nice car or if you're a true Mopar guy you say ew. Either way those two cars are no longer muscle cars. They are sports cars. They are great cars don’t get me wrong but, they are built to go around a track not a straight line. They like to corner. And that isn’t in the muscle car’s nature to turn. So do you agree that the challenger is the last standing muscle car? Or do you think that Ford and GM are making muscle cars and will continue to do so?
