Around Edmond

By Sherri Hultner April has finally arrived, and with it, weather that feels more like January. If you are new to Oklahoma, this is your first introduction to the old saying, Oklahoma is the only state that can have four seasons occur in one day. We have officially entered tornado season, so keep alert, whether by tv, social media networks, weather radio or phone app. Last year we reviewed the newest weather apps, and below are the apps we feel are really the most effective. Great weather apps for the local area are the KFOR 4 Warn app for up to date radar or live broadcasts, and the IMap Weather App from Channel 9 that has live radar, live broadcasts and will send you a NWS weather alert when there is severe weather. And be sure to stop by any local store and buy a weather radio. These phone apps help make our springtimes a little less alarming. We would like to congratulate Mayor Chuck Lamb for his reelection as Mayor of Edmond. Trevor Hultner sat down with him to ask him a few questions on the State of Edmond this month and what Edmond has to look forward to. It’s a great conversation that gives us hope of a very bright future for Edmond. We’ve been mentioning the newest organization in Edmond for teens called Be Edmond, for a couple of months now and it’s really taking off! Citizens Bank of Edmond’s Jill Castilla, Mat Hoffman and his daughter Gianna, and director Bunee Tomlinson got together Saturday before Easter to film the 2nd PSA, thanks to an amazing donation by Citizen’s of $20,000. This donation is very timely as they are now a little over half way to their goal of getting the Be Edmond phone app created. Kathy from Edmond Family Counseling was on hand and she couldn’t be more thrilled to have reached the half way mark

for this project. You can donate at Beedmond.com! In our monthy departments, Melissa Cox, of The Shape Project Bootcamps, gives some fantastic tips on staying fit while you’re traveling, Stacey Johnson talks about her AMAZING trip to Africa, and Heather Popowsky, of Neighborhood Gardener, gives us the updated version of the My Yard April, May and June gardening schedule for this year (it’s a little accelerated due to the drought, so be sure to read!). In this month’s Field Trip Feature, we traveled south, all the way to Galveston Island, Texas, to explore all of their rich history and of course, the beach. This is a great trip to get away that takes less than 7 hours to travel by car. We hope you enjoy! Our Locally Owned Business Feature this month is with Angelo Caprilli, independent and local owner of the brand new Roma’s Gelato Italian Cafe on Bryant, just south of 2nd St. and next to Qdoba Mexican Food. Angelo is from Italy and he is introducing to all of us, genuine Italian gelato & cuisine. We hope you’ll stop by and introduce yourself, he and his wife Barbara are great fun! On a last note, April 14th is when the Farmer’s Market opens on Saturdays from 8-1 pm, in Downtown Edmond at Festival Marketplace, just west of Broadway on 1st St. Be sure to show your support to all of the vendors that come out this year, we’re lucky to have it! Thanks again to all of you who have picked up a copy of Edmond Active Magazine in print, or have dropped by Issuu. com/EdmondActive to read our digital editions! We know there are so many items to read and we are genuinely grateful you continue to read Edmond Active Magazine each month! Have a great April and we’ll see you Around Edmond!

Life Happens

LIFE HAPPENS I have seen the most beautiful, wide and bright smiles in the world, and I can tell you

they are in Africa. Stacey Johnson, MAMFT, LMFT candidate, LPC candidate, trophy wifey & momma to many. www. thoughtsswirling.com

I lived among orphans for 2 weeks. It was the real deal, just like I’d heard stories

about. Little children of all ages laughing and playing and singing and embracing life with such enthusiasm that all I could do was wonder how on earth they could be so

happy. I’m a pretty positive Polly, glass half-full, and full of bright side perspective, but

this was different than I’ve ever experienced. These kids rocked my world. And broke my heart.

They slept on the floor. They ate 1, sometimes 2 bowls of rice a day. Rice. Rice. And

more RICE. Every day. They showered from buckets filled after pumping water from a

well, hand-laundered their clothes on washboards, and somehow got to school every day - without moms or alarm clocks, cars or pop tarts. And there, education is everything.

It’s their only hope, so seeing them studying together until well after midnight was

not uncommon. I saw them hunger, saw them sick, and witnessed for myself a divine perseverance that crumbled me.

Just a short 2 weeks out of my 37 years of life and these kids rocked my world.

I love America. LOVE the 405. Love my gigantic family and full house. But this short

stint of living in lack changed that love into something awful... and beautiful. My heart

feels something like being laid on cold, steel train tracks and ran over by a string of 110 ton cars. And yet, somehow my heart also feels as if it’s beating fully to capacity for the first time ever.

People said it would be hard to return from a third world country, but I didn’t really

listen Now, I get it. I’ve spent the last couple of weeks back home in the 405 wrestling

with the tension of joy and sorrow rubbing against me on all sides. I am broken for the things I have seen, the children I had to leave; and I’m elated to be back in my family and

surround by my beautiful brady bunch of rockstars. But, now, there’s this struggle daily

for the balance that I believe we all are refined by if you’ve ever been in a relationship,

ever been a parent, or ever been to Africa. The struggle is that which comes from trying

to balance the overwhelming joy matched with the most desperate pain from being in love.

The truth about love is it’s painful and it sucks at times. But, it’s still worth it to love.

During the course of producing Edmond Active we get to meet some very interesting and charismatic people, like Angelo, from Roma’s Gelato (on 2nd and Bryant, by Qdoba). Angelo was born and raised in Italy and he want’s to bring the authentic tastes of his home country here to Edmond through Roma’s Gelato. We sat down with Angelo to get the low down on his new venture. Can you give us a little explanation of how Roma’s Gelato came about? With a friend in Italy (who has money to invest) we decided 3 or 4 years ago to do something to promote real Italian delicacies in the US; he has relatives in upstate NY. Once Barbara found a place where to stay for a while (UCO) we decided to go ahead and here we are. What is your career background? I worked all my adult life in the IT and the financial sector. After having worked several years for the Data Center of the Milan Stock Exchange and having been the IT director and Internal Auditor of a primary investment firm in Italy, I decided to change my life and we moved to the US. Why did you decide to go from being an IT guy to opening a Gelato shop? As I said I decided to change my life. When we moved to the US, I started a successful business, renting apartments and B&B’s to American tourists going to Rome. It was a business done completely online. I have designed the website and supporting software systems. After the collapse of the economy in 2008, my business lost almost 80% overnight and never really recovered. We already had in mind to do something about Italian food and envisioned that Gelato would be the perfect niche. What is the difference between Gelato and Ice Cream? I explain the basics on this web page: http://www.romasgelato. com/gelato-versus-ice-cream/ What is the difference between your Gelato and other Gelato’s available in the area? We use the traditional methods used in Italy, use only the best available ingredients and do not take shortcuts. I also avoid,

no matter the cost to me, high fructose corn syrup; I use real sugarcane. I checked out my competition and I am sure my product is way better. For what I understand they cut corners. Furthermore we are NOT a franchise; we decide our offer based on our personal taste and our customers’. I am a real Italian, born and raised in Italy and I am particularly picky about Italian food. What other items will be served at Roma’s Gelato? Sorbets (they are non dairy gelato), espresso based beverages (including cappuccino, the one Starbucks calls latte but it is cappuccino), brewed coffee, pastries and soon, panini and tramezzini. Pastries are bought not made by us. We also offer various Coca Cola drinks and real sparkling mineral water (San Pellegrino), imported, as most of our products, from Italy. It seems like your goal is to bring a little “authentic” Italy here to Edmond. Is that your intention? Absolutely yes. I do not settle for less than excellent products. There are in the US, so many products sold as Italian, but they are not even close to the Italian style. In Italy you don’t eat Fettuccine Alfredo or Spaghetti and meatballs (maybe spaghetti as main dish and then meatballs as 2nd course, but never together), or the laughable Italian wedding soup. Ah and we don’t use dressing for salads; put some salt, vinegar (or lemon juice) and olive oil in a salad. Cheaper, healthier and tastier; what do you want more from a salad? Starting a new business can be a pretty daunting task. Have you hit any unexpected roadblocks along the way in starting Roma’s Gelato? Luckily we are a 100% debt free business and this helped a lot. Finding a good contractor that is not going to take advantage of me just because I am Italian was a challenge, but I found the right one. We are about 1 month delayed and slightly over budget, but I am happy anyway. Considering that this is our first experience in the retail business in the US, I think we did a pretty decent job. What’s the number one thing people should know about Romas Gelato? That they can have the real Italian experience without traveling abroad, which also means quality without compromise.

This Spring: Prepare for Severe Drought Conditions By Heather Popowsky, Owner of Neighborhood Gardener So much to do…so little daylight hours! I like to say ‘springtime is to a horticulturist (or home gardener) as tax season is to an accountant.’ This is certainly the time of year that plans are materialized into the joys of creating. It’s nice to be back and moving forward with the calendarizing of the gardener season. If you didn’t get a chance to read January-March’s to do and tip list, I encourage you to do so before moving forward. It can found in the January 2013 issue of Edmond Active at Issuu.com/ EdmondActive online. This season, Central Oklahoma’s trending garden topics will likely be the drought Oklahoma is staring straight in the face. I have sprinkled many months with tips to aid in this area. Please note that I will make a ‘guest appearance’ in the June issue if the drought gets to an extreme and potentially damaging level. Water conservation is a consideration and practice that should be used every season, but I feel like it will be a forced one (city by city restrictions) this season. APRIL Spring has arrived and the weather

10

in central Oklahoma is still on its roller coaster ride of temperatures. This is most gardeners’ favorite time of year, which is ripe for planting new trees, shrubs, and a new flush of seasonal annuals for the summer months. Remember that the projects that you take on in this “perfect climate” will still need “taking care of” during the hot and dry days of summer. So my recommendation is to only bite off pieces that can be successfully managed during the heat and potential drought. APRIL TIPS & TO DO LIST • This time of year is good for new bed establishment. Even if you don’t fill the bed completely this season. • If it hasn’t been done already, now is the time to apply pre-emergents and postemergents on turf grasses. There are also garden bed pre-emergents that can help with weeding later in the season in the flower beds. • As a rule of thumb in our zone, April 15 is the estimated day of the year that we are out of frost/freeze danger. That means after April 15 it is appropriate to change out seasonal annuals or plant the vegetable garden.

• April is also the last month till fall to fertilize fescue lawns. Fertilizing them after April could lead to disease issues later in the season. MAY April showers bringing May flowers would be a blessing this year since central Oklahoma is in such drought conditions. With the current drought status being so severe in Oklahoma I would recommend considering garden designs, new bedding plants, and existing landscaping that is as drought and heat tolerant as possible. Water conservation practices such as xeriscaping and rain barrels are starting to grow in popularity because it is wiser to plant and be successful, instead of watching landscapes die as cities are forced to restrict water usage. • May is the first recommended month to fertilize Bermuda turf grass. And is also the time of year to apply the late spring application of pre-emergent and postemergent. • As the season moves forward and the lawn and gardens green up nicely with flushes of new growth, this is the time of year where pests and diseases start to

My Yard bud as well. From bag worms to fungus in your lawn, these problems are more successfully addressed when caught early. Homeowners know their properties best and if issues arose last year, likelihood it could be a recurring problem. • With any new plantings from April and May continue to water and feed these new plants for establishment especially if the state of drought continues as it has been. Towards the end of May weaning the plants down to a regular watering schedule is best. • To beef up warm season turf, this is the appropriate time of year to over seed. JUNE June is the wonderful time of year where it is smart to pull back from planting new beds and landscapes to admiring and maintaining the work that has gone into the lawn and gardens. I like to think of my clients on their back porches sipping lemonade admiring the view while it is still tolerable outside here. • This is a great time to prune new trees and shrubs before it’s too hot outside to cause distress.

w

• Mulch, Mulch, Mulch. Part of the water conservation and seasonal maintenance plan should include mulching the gardens. Mulching alone can drastically reduce the amount of laboring and watering done during the growing season. • Continue to feed your warm season turf grasses. • Watering lawns and gardens deeply

w

at 1” at a time is better than watering frequently. This helps with better root establishment in all of the ‘green’ areas of your property. • Mid-June is the best time to treat for grub worms. “Gardening is a matter of your enthusiasm holding up until your back gets used to it.”~Author Unknown Keep up the good work this spring and this year invite the neighbors over to sip some lemonade on the back patio and enjoy the view! The advice above has been accumulated from my education in the field of horticulture to the almost decade of owning a landscaping business in the state of Oklahoma. Due to space and the purpose of this article I couldn’t elaborate on all the tips I gave and couldn’t fit all the advice I have for each month. So I encourage you to find me on facebook under Neighborhood Gardener or on Twitter @gardenchica for questions about this article and further information on monthly tips and to do lists items. Look for me here soon to review July—September.

Let’s Give a Hand to Spring 1. Sally Hansen Salon EffectsFrench Mani Decals from Target ~ Fantastic concept, however these didn’t even last 3 days with regular wear. $11.99 2. Estee Lauder Nail Polish in Nude from Dillard’s ~ Estee Lauder is a sentimental favorite of mine as my Grandmother lived in this line. This is a great product that lasted 5 days without any chipping on my busy hands. Worth the $20.

3. Madewell Nail File from Birchbox.com ~ The floral design is lovely, and was a cute extra in the March Birchbox. I wouldn’t purchase this file as it wore out after 2 uses, though. 4. Mophie Plus Backup IPhone Charger

5. Marcelle BB Cream from Birchbox.com ~ Very lightweight, has a slight golden tint & coverage lasted about 3 hours. Not worth the heavy price.

9. The Mophie Plus Phone Charger & Phone Case is the ultimate if you require a constant charge while you’re away from an outlet. I used this from Edmond to Galveston TX, as we fried our USB port with a cheap car charger and I used the phone on one charge for 8 hours without losing power at all. Charges via USB or via cube and is syncable while charging phone and case. $99 at AT&T stores or at ATT.com. A $79 Mophie Air unit is available that has less charging capability. The Plus unit would be a great tool for busy business people on the go or for vacation destinations without power outlets.

6. Covergirl BB Cream from CVS ~ Lightweight with little coverage that doesn’t last long and reapplication was necessary after 2 hours. $7.99 7. Jouer Tinted Moisturizer from Birchbox.com ~ This is a lightweight tinted moisturizer that provides amazing coverage and lasts 8+ hours. If doubled up, acts as a full foundation. $28 8. Loreal Magic BB Cream from CVS ~ This may be the best drugstore option we have tried! Lightweight, great coverage and lasted over 6 hours. $10.99

Edmond’s Mayor: Charles Lamb

The State Of Edmond for 2013 By Trevor Hultner

According to Edmond’s mayor, Charles Lamb, the city has “turned a corner” on the economic downturn of 2008. Lamb, who was reelected by a wide margin on April 2, said during a conversation with Edmond Active that this was due to a unique budget technique that Edmond uses where the City Council plans five years ahead, instead of the requisite year in advance. Lamb has been Edmond Mayor for 18 months, replacing Patrice Douglas when it was announced that Douglas had been chosen to fill the outgoing Corporation Commissioner’s office. Lamb beat his opponent, Richard Prawdzienski, with a nearly 82 percent lead at the polls. Here are his thoughts on the state of Edmond’s economy, energy sector and infrastructure, what he would like to see happen in Edmond over the next few years, and more. ON THE ECONOMY Economically, I believe we have turned the corner on the downturn of 2008-2009. We had basically negative revenues to expenditures for one year. We expected to make three percent and we made a negative three percent, so we were down six percent. Edmond has some unique financial tools that we use. When we budget, we have to do an annual budget according to state law. But when we budget, we sit down and look out four years for all of those budget categories, which gives us an opportunity to kind of forecast beyond the one year, plan our expenditures, look at our proposed revenues, and make some adjustments as necessary to avoid starting something you couldn’t finish. We are seeing investments -- we saw the hospitals, and those are bringing their

own synergies of additional investments in terms of clinics and other medical facilities. The City has made an investment in land purchases to create a conference center and a hotel, which this community can benefit from the types of meeting that a conference would hold. We build the facilities first -- this is (City Manager) Steve Commons’s comment -to serve the needs of the community, but then they’re built with the idea that they can also serve tournament scale. ON ENERGY We have a relationship with an organization called OMPA -- Oklahoma Municipal Power Authority. It’s a jointaction agency. OMPA provides the generation resources and the transmission to get it to Edmond Electric and the other 39 cities under the agency. OMPA invested in wind before anybody else did in Oklahoma. We have recently put more wind on the grid with our farm out by El Reno. We have [hydroelectric power] [...] We have some coal in our inventory and some natural gas. And we recently added a little three-megawatt facility for landfill gas generation. ON INFRASTRUCTURE Well, inside the infrastructure projects that we’re doing on our end, we’re doing them with an application of geothermal heating and air conditioning systems. And what that means is that we’ll be taking the Earth and using it to, uh, provide a sink, if you will, for the heat and to pool the cool. What that does for Edmond Electric is it improves the load shape. During the winter, you’re generating and selling power down in this curve, but you have all of these resources you built to generate

the power in the summer. That difference is what’s called your load factor. We’re trying to bring that down. Because when we put the geo systems in they can bring the peak down for the system, but they can also bring up the consumption in the winter months, so you can level out the production. On the I-35/Covell project, one thing we don’t have much of at this point in time is businesses that attract the traveler on I-35 to stop and spend money and move on. We’ll see some of that at I-35 and Covell, what they call “highway retail,” or “interstate retail.” We have Braums and we have a Conoco down on 15^th , but that’s really about the extent of that, where they’d stop to eat at a Braums. But they have plans to do quite a bit more of that at I-35 and Covell. ON BUYING LOCAL The sales tax that we collect here does all of these things: two cents go to the general fund. That pays for your salaries, your overhead, your public safety, all of the things it takes to make a city run. We have one-eighth of a penny dedicated to parks and park development, we have one-eighth dedicated to the police public safety, one-fourth dedicated to fire, and three-fourths of a cent dedicated to capital projects, and right now, half a cent for five years for the public safety center. So those are things that will benefit Edmond, and if we don’t spend our money in Edmond, we don’t have the revenues to do the projects that I just outlined. Field Trip

Down By The Boardwalk Galveston Island, Texas

Photos By Chris Hultner Story By Sherri Hultner When we started this feature a year ago, it wasn’t meant to be for any other reason than to show off fun and interesting destinations in this region that are at least a day away from Edmond. This month’s Field Trip was to Galveston Island, Texas. This seaside Island is well known for its Cruise Ship Harbor, but after arriving we discovered it is rich in history, even after being devasted numerous times by hurricanes. From Edmond, it takes approximately 7 hours to drive to Galveston Island, and it’s a beautiful and picturesque drive full of Texas countryside. If you fly into Houston, as soon as you arrive at the airport you can acquire a Houston Pass, and this will get you into 5 area attractions, such as the Houston Zoo, NASA, the Houston Museum of Natural History and Moody Park’s Aquarium and Rainforest Botanical Gardens for $46, which is

an excellent bargain and these attractions are a lot of fun. Once in Galveston, there are plenty of restaraunts, an upscale arts district, a trendy district called The Strand, a harbor cruise, bike rentals and the 3 year old Pleasure Pier, as shown below. The accomodations include beach home & condo rentals, hotels on the beach with direct beach access, bed and breakfasts, and hotels & resorts on Seawall Ave. which is literally 20 steps to the water. We found that the best place to research accomodations was TripAdvisor.com, which shows & compares properties with pricing and customer reviews. Most all of the places are true to their reviews. It will show pricing for all reservation sites, too. We thought Galveston Island, with their friendly locally owned businesses, charming districts & history, made a fun trip to just get away for a change of scenery.

The Johnson Space Center

Field Trip If you do plan a trip to Galveston you absolutely must include a trip to the Johnson Space Center in your itinerary. Even if you only have a tiny bit of Space Geek in you, you’ll find the Space Center fascinating. While it is not an amusement park -- this is an actual working NASA facility -- there is still a lot to see and do for the whole family. The kids will love the discovery zone in the main building. They can conduct experiments, ride simulators and see what the cockpit of the space shuttle looks like. Then you can take an hour-long tram tour of the plant and see where every astronaut, past and present has trained. You’ll also get to see all the new technology NASA is using. Finally you will get to see a Saturn V rocket, up close. Seriously cool stuff!
