Hi there and thank you very much for picking up my magazine this month. This month is the July/August issue, and I couldn’t be happier about bringing you June and July coverage of Heard on Hurd, coverage from LibertyFest, coverage from a flattrack event held at Remington Park and more. These events happened at the exact right time with virus numbers almost all the way down, and what a fantastic release it was for everyone to be able to gather again in public. It’s funny how everyone was so apprehensive about heading out even with vaccines back in May, afraid that gathering would cause hot spots. By June, it appeared we were rounding the Covid corner, as gathering in the thousands at Heard on Hurd didn’t cause a hotspot nor did gathering at LibertyFest. I think the Delta variant just hadn’t fully arrived yet at the time I attended these events, much less in May when I drove with my husband of 30 years to southwest Florida for a weeks stay. I don’t know what caused such a drastic spike in cases, but it is definitely here as I write this column, and my hope is that you have utilized every tool available to you to try to avoid getting this illness. I hope that everyone will be a little kinder this go round about other’s feeling the need to wear masks, because it does help keep the spread down. Whether you will or not is just a matter of personal choice. I hope everyone will keep going to our city’s events, out to eat with so many patios and streeteries available in Edmond and around the metro. Keep shopping at local boutiques and other independently owned businesses. I don’t believe there will be anymore shut down’s because I don’t believe our economy could handle another as well the Governor will not call another State of Emergency.
I know that as of today, the OK State Health Department is recommending all staff and kids K-12 wear masks at school again, based solely on the CDC issuing new recommendations to suit the current Delta variant situation, and recommended that all people, vaccinated or not, wear masks indoors should they have contact with immunocompromised folks. We could reach herd immunity with 80% of the population vaccinated, however Oklahoma is at only 39% so again, please be kind to those who must choose to wear a mask, because of the lack of vaccinated population they feel they must to keep themselves and their friends and family safe. There is no need for ridiculing someone for governing themselves accordingly. Again, here is to a different new season of how we all gather, and I am hoping to see everyone get out and visit and gather, but safely. I will be at the August 21 Heard on Hurd to see the amazing musical performers with The Big News, a ska punk band, Ckai Dawson with her rich soulful R&B, and a crowd favorite Lincka!!! Sherri

Heard On Heard Jumps in on event reopening’s in June & July with amazing music line up set for August 17, 2021 from 6 to 10 pm in Downtown Edmond The last 15 months has been a real rollercoaster for those who run events and venues. Tower Theatre in OKC, The Jones Assembly and more have all felt the brunt of the shutdown, and most residents don’t understand that many are barely just

reopening. Tower Theatre is offering free concerts until the third week of August on Friday evenings to welcome everyone back! When it came to reopening, it just wasn’t as easy as opening one’s doors or telling people to come out by the thousands. It really was a battle of hurry up and wait… for disaster lending to come through, for the roll out of vaccines, for the Covid case counts to reduce, but really waiting for enough people to feel comfortable with coming back out into society without a mask, as a community. June 19th marked the first of Citizen’s Bank of Edmond’s Heard on Hurd block parties in Downtown Edmond of their abbreviated 2021 Season, also marking the beginning of the popular event’s 8th season. This may not have seemed a mighty task thanks to almost perfect

execution by Citizen’s Bank volunteers as the event went off without a hitch, and especially with more residents showing up than expected. Thousands and thousands more. Heard on Hurd represents the best of Edmond with its wholesome atmosphere and down to earth vibe. And that is why so many missed it during Covid lockdowns in 2020 and the spring of 2021. It brought tears to my eyes to see Jill Castilla, President and CEO of Citizen’s Bank of Edmond proclaim her caption to this photo with the most authenticity, humility, and surprise – “Heard on Hurd is still a hit!” because she puts the event on for the benefit of the community not so that the community will benefit her or her bank. Face to face, Edmondite’s and residents from other communities came out Saturday June 21 in record numbers, and were so amazingly polite, it absolutely reminded me as to why I moved to Oklahoma in the first-place decades ago. It appeared that all the people who attended decided to leave their politics at home and everyone appeared to have had a really fantastic time. There were over 40 vendors at the June event, including Stars and Stripes Coffee, a crowd favorite, 405 Mobile Boutique, Nash, Saucee Sicilian, Let’s Do Greek and more that folks enjoyed prior to the night’s musical performers of Bedtime, Jacobi Ryan, and The Imaginaries. July 17th saw the 2nd event happen with a pre-event thunderstorm that blessed

the event with less humidity and mid 80-degree weather. This event had over 60 vendors, including RISE participant Shop Mode, who has fantastic clothing and accessories! Saucee Sicilian, Big O’s BBQ, Metro Mini’s Doughnuts, were back, as was Snow Smore, and with all the food trucks seeing packed lines down Broadway. This month, a new experience business opened its doors for the first time after rehabbing 10 S. Broadway called The Body Barre. It’s a yoga and fitness studio with a boutique up front and has some of the most welcoming instructors in the metro. Be sure to stop by and visit! The July event had some of the metro’s best rap and R&B performances from The True CW, who is just one of the nicest people to meet, Alyse whose R&B tones were amazing and Jabee who is always upbeat and entertaining for the entire family with his fun involvement of all ages. Saturday August 21st from 6-10 pm, if you haven’t yet, visit Downtown Edmond again to experience Heard on Hurd. Bring the entire family out and your dogs, as this event is family and dog friendly, and is a great break away from the weekly grind and start of school! Performers for this event will be local Ska Punk band The Big News, Ckai Dawson with R&B that is not to be believed, and a crowd favorite Lincka! Be sure to follow @HeardonHurd at Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter for the latest event information!

A motorcycle hurling down a dirt track on the plus side of one hundred and thirty miles per hour, then pitching it sideways into a corner without lifting off the throttle is quite the spectacle. Not long ago that scene played out over and over again at Remington Park in the OKC Adventure zone when the American Flat Track (AFT) national series paid a visit to Oklahoma. Flat track racing is Americas oldest
form of motorcycle racing. From 1910 to 1931, Board Track racing was all the rage across the country but it was extremely dangerous for the racers. By 1932 Board Tracks were being phased out in favor of holding races on Dirt Tracks. In particular, Horse Racing tracks. By the late ‘40s and early ‘50s the AMA (American Motorcyclist Association) began organizing National Championships for Flat Track racing.
The AFT series made its second appearance at Remington Park in three years. The event drew a sizable crowd thanks to easing Covid restrictions. People were definitely glad to get out cheer on the racers. This round of the series was a double header, so there was racing both Friday and Saturday night. The crowd was a good mix between Harley and Indian enthusiasts. The action didn’t dissapoint.
