AroundEdmond

Hi everyone! It’s just shocking how fast this summer is going by. Tonight is the July 2019 Heard on Hurd and I am so excited to sit and view the seven shorts selected by Citizen’s Bank of Edmond with the help of the crew at the Dead Center Film Festival. We will have full coverage of this summer’s fun from Heard on Hurd in the next issue, along with some amazing local entrepreneurs who are adding a little fun to our summer days. There are so many changes coming soon to Edmond in general but to Downtown Edmond, specifically. There will be two new districts just west of Broadway on First Street, first the Edmond Railyard, which is located in the old lumber yard and hardware spaces across from the Festival Marketplace. This is turning into a really cool venture, with the Patriarch folks bringing in a new taproom called 1884 at the Railyard, restaurants, Capital’s Ice Cream is bringing in a new cookie and ice cream concept called Cities, and then my favorite, the patio. With this being EdmondActive’s 10th year, I have dreamed of all the patios. To sit and visit with other business owners, listen to music, and just generally soak up all the patio summertime goodness. And here we are!!! Excited does not adequately describe how I feel about this project! It should

be family and singles friendly, as well. Also, Frenzy Brewing is going to open its doors as Edmond’s first brewery at 13 N Broadway, where the old Italian Jim’s was located. There should be more music and opportunity to hang out with friends and colleagues and this is really exciting, as well. All in all, the fall and winter are looking optimistic for our little town, to be able to grow forward with community meeting spaces and community connection, and to be able to offer Edmondites what they crave when we all leave and spend our tax dollars in Downtown OKC or Midtown seeking this same connection and gathering space. In this issue, I had to give everyone one last look at LibertyFest, the fireworks, the first ever Wagner’s Carnival. Also, in our newest section Listen Up Edmond! I am sharing a great pod caster and business incubator Stitchcrew and I highly suggest a listen to their interview with Congresswoman Kendra Horn. Highly inspiring! In My Home, Anne McCarthy, owner of Emory Anne Interiors celebrates her third year in her new larger showroom at 150th and Santa Fe, and Josh Pape recently joined Citizens Bank of Edmond as their Chief Banking Officer! In Local Flavor, just a reminder that Sunnyside Diner on 2nd and Broadway has recently added dinner hours Monday’s through Saturday’s from 6-8 pm, and I highly recommend their dinner menu, and the prices make it an easy mid week choice for dinner out! And lastly, we bring you a feature from TravelOK.com about the new Oklahoma Fishing Trail! I just want to extend my thanks to every single one of you who has ever picked up my small community magazine, or visited one of our advertiser’s because of something you saw in the magazine, online or at our social feeds over the last ten years. EdmondActive is my why, and offering a different take on what’s happening within our community gives me so much joy that I can’t imagine not doing this for my living. Here’s to another ten years, and thank you for your support, participation and connection all of these years. It has truly been my pleasure. See you all around Edmond! Sherri

MyHome Emory Anne Interiors Celebrates 3rd Year in New Showroom The word impossible is not one in Anne McCarthy’s vocabulary. She is the owner of numerous boutiques, notably her namesake, Emory Anne Interiors. Emory Anne’s used to be located on 33rd Street and Bristol Park Boulevard, and in 2016, Anne started her build out of a new building on 150th Street just east of Santa Fe. This move was integral to Anne’s vision of offering a large showroom for nationally owned brands such as Company C and offering local wares from local vendors as well. Emory Anne’s expansion allowed the boutique to compete on a larger scale by providing an extensive offering of everyday items for personal use and gifting, and a warehouse plus delivery service. The move wasn’t easy, the build out had snags, and in true form, Anne handled it with grace under fire, and even though she didn’t know if it would happen, Anne was ready and open for her Holiday Open House, always occurring in November. It was truly inspirational to see the transformation of the boutique, occurring while Anne was staging and designing multiple homes for the Parade of Homes, and traveling the world to bring truly fresh, unique finds you can only find at Emory Anne Interiors. Emory Anne Interiors offers in store and in home design services from sprucing your home’s look up to full redesign/ design services, bridal registry, personal grooming lines, children’s gifts and books, kitchen and party accessories, along with a full line of furniture and home accessories for literally every room in your home! The boutique’s hours are Monday through Friday 10-6 pm and Saturday’s 10-5 pm. Don’t forget to check out Anne’s sister store Botanical Bar next door, which is a full service floral shop, offering gifts and plants. The Botanical Bar is available to host events for team building, parties, and is also available for private events at your location of choice.

ListenUpEdmond! In 2018, we saw more women launch innovative companies accounting for 40% of new entrepreneurs in the U.S. We also experienced an increase of women investors and fund managers as well as a record number of women run for office and get elected to Congress. Today, we have more women than ever running to become President of the United States in 2020. What is behind the drive of these women to build the businesses they want to see in the world and run for office to enact the change they want to see in their communities? In our 11th episode we talked to Congresswoman Kendra Horn who in 2018 flipped the 5th congressional district in Oklahoma, a seat held by the opposing party since 1975, making her the first Democratic woman to be elected to Congress from Oklahoma. Many attributed Kendra’s success to the changing demographics in the district, others to the ongoing frustration of politics as usual in Washington. What captured our attention is Kendra’s similarities with female entrepreneurs. She outhustled her opponent, circumvented bias and figured out how to be resourceful, particularly in the early days of launching her campaign. Join us as we talk to Kendra about what drove her to run, the challenges of running and serving, what she considers to be the most critical problems facing our country and her views on the value of startups to our economy. You can find numerous episodes with real changemakers at stitchcrew.com/podcast
