AroundEdmond Hi everyone! Hoping all of you are ok after the wettest May ever. I had said what a spring it was to start last month’s Around Edmond column, having no idea what crazy weather Mother Nature had in store for Oklahoma three weeks later. Anyone who has had a tornado ever touch down on his or her property or even in his or her surrounding vicinity can tell you weather PTSD is a thing. In 2009, an F3 hit my street, and my youngest and I rode it out in our storm shelter, with our BBQ Island landing on top of the storm shelter. Our home was one of about two in our neighborhood that suffered no roofing or home damage, with exception of losing our side fences. This storm ripped the roofs off four homes on my street and then jumped and landed in Oak Tree miles away. This experience left a permanent mark on my youngest son and I, and we understand clearly that you don’t need to have direct tornado or weather damage to be affected, and we understand the level of respect the weather people and news media deserve during severe weather incidents. Having tornado watches and warnings, every single day for 16 days caused some to be hypersensitive to their weather fears, and some to ignore warnings given to us by the local meteorologists and news media. What happened in El Reno is similar to what happened to our neighborhood nine years ago in that the tornado came out of nowhere without any warning. My heart goes out to those affected in El Reno, and to help those affected by this sudden turn of the weather, visit KFor.com and donate to the Go Fund Me account set up by the City of El Reno. With that said, the weather has played havoc with my magazine, too. I had fully laid out and written a mammoth lake, river and waterfall issue to be

printed and distributed in mid May, after having two bi monthly issues in January/February and March/April. Seriously. I sat and watched every lake, creek and waterfall fill up then start overflowing to then become a history making statewide flood of dams, lochs and rivers taking out whole towns with so much water that this State had to issue a 77 countywide State of Emergency. Lake Arcadia is closed until further notice as are many water features around the state and I did not feel this to be relevant content so I decided due to the weather delay and due to print run delays to bring you the 2019 Libertyfest Preview a bit early, which will be right on time when I secure a new print date. If you are new to Oklahoma, hopefully you don’t think the weather we all just experienced is the norm. It was a May for the history books, with what is being tallied as double the amount of severe weather and tornado warnings that normally occur during this month each year. I decided to leave the cover of the now shelved Great Lake Getaway Issue, as it was planned featuring Arcadian Getaways Innkeeper Martha Hall’s super easy and amazingly delicious Cinnamon Roll recipe that would be an amazing addition to any lake weekend. I have always been amazed at Martha Hall’s cooking acumen, with each visit to the 26 year old Award Winning Arcadian Inn Bed and Breakfast at 1st and University, and whenever I lamented at how amazing her cooking was, Martha would always laugh and say whatever I was amazed over was super easy to cook – and then always asking “Don’t you know how to cook?”. I was never really taught how to cook, but have always given my best most enthusiastic efforts, as my family can attest to. My family always appreciated my enthusiasm and they always politely avoided telling me how awful some

dishes I presented to them were to my face. I would never have thought a comment to be personal because even I cringed at some dishes I may or may not have thought I mastered but …. No. Martha’s Cinnamon Rolls have accompanied the Downtown Edmond LibertyFest Parade for decades with pans and pans ready for early morning parade watchers who would come and go at the Arcadian Inn every 4th of July morning. It is my hope you will tear out this recipe, or save or print the online recipe, to bring to the lake when they are open again, or have available for a summer treat to enjoy at home with friends or family, as it is a fail proof recipe, fun, and amazingly delicious. I like it because you can customize its inner ingredients to your liking, and this recipe can be made in mass quantities easily if your crowd size demands it. Also, Christmas and Easter demand this recipe, as well! I am excited to bring you a new feature section this month called Listen Up Edmond! featuring local businesses and business owners who are braving the Pod Casting space locally. Thanks to all of you who continue to pick up this magazine each time I head out to distribute it and who stop by each of the local businesses who advertise. Without you, your favorite locally owned businesses, who all lend to our feelings of being connected to the community, wouldn’t be able to compete with big box stores and I hope you’ll make a concerted effort this summer to continue to support your favorites. There are changes to the normal schedule of events for this year’s LibertyFest week, such as a new 3 day long Carnival, and the removal of the Miss Libertyfest Pageant, so take a look and take note! I hope to see all of you around Edmond! Sherri

Ingredients (OVEN TO 350) Prep Time: Approx. 1 hour 20 mins. Baking Time: 20 mins. 1 box Duncan Hines Butter Recipe Cake Mix 2 ¼ cups warm milk 2 pkgs. Yeast Pinch of Salt About 5 cups of flour For filling (To your own taste) ½ cup melted butter Sprinkle Cinnamon Sugar, Brown Sugar, Raisins and Nuts Glaze – Gradually add milk to powdered sugar until you get to the desired consistency of not too thick and not too thin Dissolve yeast in warm milk. Let set, it should begin bubbling if yeast is alive. After 5 minutes or so, add yeast to cake mix and pinch of salt. With dough hook attached to your electric mixer, slowly add flour to make a stiff dough. Turn out onto floured counter and knead for 5 to 10 minutes. Place in large greased bowl, turning once to grease all of the dough, and cover with towel. Set in draft-free space and let rise 1 hour until doubled in size. Turn out onto floured counter again, and roll into rectangle ½ inch thick. Spread with ½ cup melted butter, and then sprinkle inside ingredients to your liking i.e. cinnamon sugar, brown sugar, raisins, nuts, etc. Roll wide side towards you and slice into 2 inch thick slices. Place slices in greased 9x13 pan, and let rise until doubled. Bake at 350 deg. for 20 minutes. Make powdered sugar glaze to drizzle over rolls just before serving.

ListenUpEdmond! This summer I thought it would be fun to ask readers and residents to share their favorite Pod Casts, for summer listening (similar to a Summer Reading List or Book Club). I received so many entries that I will be extending this feature as a regular section in Edmondactive and online! My first suggestion is for you to head over to StitchCrew.com, a start up incubator and so much more. StitchCrew is headed up by local residents and entrepreneurs Erika and Chris Lucas, and they have recently entered into the Pod Casting scene swinging with some phenomenal guests and insightful interviews, covering everything between business and civics to what makes our leaders tick. The first interview you need to listen to that will give you so much insight into Citizen’s Bank of Edmond and all of the projects they are involved in and why, is with Citizen’s Bank of Edmond’s fearless leader, Jill Castilla. Jill Castilla is authentic, not without fear, a change maker, and she is currently investing in entrepreneur’s long term successes throughout the Metro. Jill’s story is one of grit, grace and ingenuity. From StitchCrew, with only 18 percent of startups ever accessing a bank loan, finding community banks that see the long-term value of working with early stage entrepreneurs even if they are not bankable right away, is a rare find. Jill Wallace Castilla President and CEO of Citizens Bank of Edmond is one of those rare finds. Listen to find out more about her passion for entrepreneurs and how she’s managed to stay competitive using technology and social media. Take a listen, there is so much to be learned. If you have a Pod Cast you’d like featured, or know of one you just really like and would like to share for review, send it over by DM at Instagram, Facebook or Twitter!
