Hi everyone, I could not be happier to be writing this column, as a street zine publisher, it means things are getting back to some semblance of normal. This spring is ushering in new events, new businesses in our downtown district, new ways of enjoying dining around Edmond, new art all around the Downtown area, and in June, with the return of Heard on Heard, running June 19 to October 16, 2021. The new murals had just started in Downtown Edmond in the Spring of 2020 when everything stopped last March. The new Welcome to Edmond piece by Dusty Gilpin (@Okiedust at Instagram) has an amazing photo reproduction of McCall’s in its heyday. I was told that they projected the photo and filled it in on the wall and I really could not get over the quality but also the sentiment of bringing old and new together. Commonplace Books now occupies the McCall’s space, after having carefully redone the interior during the Covid period, and it is really a lovely space that I highly recommend to anyone but especially those with littles as they have a regular storytime on Saturday’s. North Broadway lost some retailers due to Covid, but Citizen’s Bank of Edmond started up their retail incubator concept in RISE, next to the bank’s community lobby during the Christmas holiday season and this spring, with much success. The concept is to allow small businesses to experience having a retail space in a downtown area. I hope

to see many go on to open their small businesses in brick-andmortar spaces! With Vibes beginning April 1, 2021, as an entertainment/ shopping event series every 1st Thursday this was a lowkey way to start bringing performers and residents back into Downtown Edmond, that should be heavily attended the first Thursday in May, for those wanting to visit the Edmond Arts Festival, which has been moved to Labor Day weekend. Libertyfest will return this year, and it will be quite an event! Thanks to every one of you for following and supporting local businesses, but especially my advertisers, as they have all navigated through the weirdest year anyone can remember to be a small business owner. As events start taking hold and are promoted, be sure to pay full ticket price (don’t ask for a discount because venues have received NO help at all during the past year!) and most importantly, have fun! For daily happenings Around Edmond, be sure to follow along online at EdmondActive.com and our social networks @EdmondActive! If you have a story idea, send them to me by DM, or to Sherrih@EdmondActive.com. See you all around Edmond! Sherri

Finally! After 6 months of balloting and then polling all of you at our website, to which votes were found by my sharing the ballot requests then polls at Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, we finally have the results of the first ever EdmondActive Community Favorites! While we have businesses that advertise, that wasn’t a factor in determining the winners for this set of favorites. When I moved here, the internet was not that great locally as far as what information you could find about shopping, dining, entertainment and lodging. Real information, not just tourist information. Over the last 20 years, every publication had, and some still currently have, a pay to play favorites list, but again, this community favorite list was born in my effort to try to offer a true reference list, that is helpful and that comes from other Edmond area residents (voters came from Edmond, the Village, Nichols Hills, OKC, Moore, Norman and Guthrie). Without further ado, congratulations to our winners and to the top businesses here in Edmond, according to EdmondActive readers! Keep your eye out this October when we start balloting for the 2021 Community Favorites, and thanks to all of our readers who made this a really fun project, even though we had to postpone announcing the winners for the last year! 06 edmondactive.com

Edmond PD Motorcycle Survival Course

By Chris Hultner A couple years ago I decided to buy a motorcycle for my commute to work. I grew up riding dirt bikes and still had a deep-seated love for motorcycles, but I vowed from an early age never to ride them on the street; it was too dangerous, I thought. Now that I’m older I find the need for speed is not something I’m after and maybe a more mellow “me” would be fine on a street bike. So I purchased a used Suzuki DR650 Dual Sport motorcycle,

12

something I could ride on the street and - when the mood struck me - in the dirt. After a few months of riding the DR650 to work I experienced my first crash. I was going around a corner and my front wheel hit some loose sand while I applied the front brake. The front end washed out and I went down hard. My injuries were a broken shoulder and a bruised ego. Crashing is part of the game when you ride a motorcycle. Everyone who rides has a crash story. Now I had mine. I actually thought about selling the bike after the

crash, but once the pain in my shoulder subsided a little I realized that I genuinely loved riding my motorcycle. If I was going to continue riding on the street, however, I needed to take a motorcycle safety course to better arm myself against the perils that can come with street riding. After a little research I found that OSU offers a three-day basic rider course for $240.00. While that was a viable option, I felt I needed something a little more substantial than a basic course. Then I found the Edmond Police Department’s

Civilian Motorcycle School. According to the City of Edmond’s web page for the program, the free Civilian Motorcycle School was initiated “in an effort to make city streets and highways safer for all.” Edmond PD got approval for the program from the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office and the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety, and the state awarded Edmond $150,000 in grants to make sure the program had all the proper equipment: a mobile classroom, instructor pay and, in addition to Edmond, class

locations in Lawton and Durant. Did I mention it was free? Jackpot! What To Expect The Level 1 class I took was a sixhour course centered mostly around riding basics, with a little classroom time between exercises. The first thing we learned was how to properly pick up a motorcycle. For anyone who’s tipped over a full dresser, this lesson was very helpful. Next we went into a throttle and clutch control exercise to learn how to control

our bikes at the slowest pace just by using the clutch and throttle. Keeping your balance at a very slow pace is not as easy as it may seem. The next exercise dealt with braking as fast as you can in the shortest distance possible. This was all about reflexes and control under extreme braking. After that, we worked on weaving in and out of cones while keeping our eyes on the horizon. When doing this exercise your natural instinct is to look down at the cone in front of you, but by raising your

MotorcycleSafety

eyes and looking ahead you can better judge what’s coming. Clutch and throttle control came into play big time during this exercise. After the single-row slalom course we worked on offset cones to weave in and out of; kind of like riding around parked cars. The emphasis on this task was to let your head and eyes lead you around the obstacle by looking through the turns and not down at the street. The final exercise of the course was the hardest of them all--executing a low-

14

speed U-turn inside a 20-foot radius. To do this you must draw from everything you learned during the day and put it to practical use. The Takeaway So the big question here is: was this class worth it? Absolutely! When most people get on a motorcycle they spend the first few months on the road trying to figure things out and get comfortable riding in traffic. That’s what I did at first and it was kind of scary. This class armed me with

a new skillset and more confidence. I should have taken it before I started out on the road, and if you are contemplating getting a motorcycle, I would absolutely recommend taking this class before hitting the road. One of the things I found the most interesting was the number of repeat customers taking the course. About half the riders in attendance had already been through the class. For a lot of them it was a chance to blow off the cobwebs of a long winter of no riding. For others it was a

chance to hone their skills. It’s also a great way to mingle with the local motorcycle community. I’m already planning on taking the Level 2 course and I’ll definitely do it again next Spring. MyHome Selling Your Home? These Are The Upgrades Buyers Are Looking For During COVID-19 by 525 Realty Group

COVID-19 has changed the real estate landscape in many ways—including shifting buyer priorities. But what, exactly, are buyers looking for in today’s market? A recent article from realtor.com outlined the home upgrades buyers are looking for during the COVID-19 pandemic, including: Outdoor upgrades. Many people are spending the majority of time at home these days—and that can lead to a serious case of cabin fever. To escape that cabin fever (without having to leave their homes), buyers are looking for homes with functional, relaxing, and well-designed outdoor spaces. Sprucing up your outdoor space (for example, by refreshing the landscaping or adding a patio) before

16

listing your home can help make the property more attractive to buyers. A functional home office. More people than ever are working from home—which has made home offices a must-have for many buyers. If you don’t currently have a home office, staging a guest bedroom as an office can help potential buyers see the home’s potential for a functional workspace. A spruced-up laundry room. COVID has increased many people’s cleaning habits— which, for many, has translated to more time in the laundry room. Making minor updates to spruce up your laundry room (like adding wallpaper, a fresh coat of paint, or extra storage) can help to up your home’s value in the eyes of cleanlinessconcerned buyers.

The Takeaway: What does this mean for you? If you’re planning on selling your home, these upgrades can make your home more appealing to buyers—which may help you sell your home faster and more profitably. LocalFlavor Will Edmond “Streateries” Be Permanent?

When the pandemic reached Oklahoma and all businesses were shuttered, restaurants were considered essential and were only allowed to operate briefly by curbside pickup or by delivery. But by May 2020, Governor Stitt allowed restaurants to reopen and thus “Streateries” were born, in OKC and Edmond. Edmond has long awaited outdoor seating in Edmond prior to the Covid pandemic, and thanks to a grant program, several restaurants around town took part in this temporary program. Some utilized the orange traffic barriers, and two opted to show what more permanent blockades could look like. Chef Black at Café Evoke built his barrier, and it is pretty fantastic, and Café 501 also made a truly lovely space to dine outdoors. Once everything was opened back to the public, the City Council decided to allow the “Streateries” to continue to remain. Here’s to hoping there will be a continuation this program with further grants to help restaurants to beautify their outdoor spaces as this program has become a very popular dining option in Downtown Edmond.
