Hi everyone! The summer is over and this issue highlights the amazing crowds that showed up in Downtown Edmond to enjoy the July and August Heard on Hurd events! The July event hosted the DeadCenter Filmfest Shorts and what an amazing group of filmmakers to be highlighted this year. The crowd was larger than the last two years, and everyone sat through the entire 8 short films. I am so glad everyone showed up, because we need more events like this in Edmond! The August Heard on Hurd was heavily attended celebrating back to school city wide. Hoping all of you attend September 21, 2019 to celebrate one of the brightest events in our City. As I write this, it is September 10, and I am left to remember 9/11, and that it has been 18 years since that event unfolded, and it leaves me speechless every year. One thing that offers solace is the remembrance ceremonies and flags placed around campus’ at UCO and Oklahoma Christian University. Both a little different, with OCU placing 168 Oklahoma flags, and 168 US flags to specifically remember the effects of terrorism, and UCO places a flag for every person who passed on 9/11 by the students of each University. It is a fact that as of now, there are classes at these University’s who weren’t born when this event happened, and

In Local Flavor, there is a new Peach Bourbon cocktail recipe that is sure to extend your summer patio time just a little further and is easy to prepare. And last in this issue, Life Happens is somber but timely as this month is National Mental Health Month. Chad McCoy M.A., LPC of Edmond Family Counseling gives a talk about our own responsibility to rectify our past traumas to achieve healing. It’s a phenomenal article and well worth the read. As I am preparing for upcoming Holiday issues, please take some time to visit our ShopEdmond retailers listed in the magazine. They are some of the communities best, and deserve your support, in light of so many closing their doors in what appears community choice to shop mostly online. Peachy Keen Bourbon Cocktail
(Shop spirits at Edmond Wine Shop at 15th & Boulevard)
Summertime is winding down, but this cocktail will extend summer with each and every batch. With the combo of simple syrup and your favorite bourbon, this recipe is quick, tasty and cool! I would recommend chilling all of the ingredients as cold as possible, so that the ice doesn’t melt too much and water it down. Add everything to a shaker with some ice, and shake heartily. Pour over a large ice cube, garnish with a piece of peach and mint, and you’ll be good to go! Enjoy! Ingredients Peach Simple Syrup • 4 peaches • 1 cup of sugar • ½ cup fresh mint, lightly packed • 1 cup of water
Cocktail Ingredients • 2 oz lemon juice • 3 oz bourbon • 4 oz Peach Simple Syrup Instructions Peach Simple Syrup 1. Cut the peaches into eighths and discard the pit. Place the sliced peaches into a medium saucepan and add 1 cup of water. 2. Once you have allowed the water to simmer and cook for 7 minutes and the peaches have started to break down, add the sugar and allow the sugar to break down and dissolve, then remove from heat. 3. Let the syrup sit for 30 minutes at room temperature. 4. Strain the syrup through a fine mesh strainer and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Assembling the cocktail 1. In a cocktail shaker, combine the lemon juice, bourbon and peach simple syrup with ice, shake well then strain into a glass with a single cube of ice, garnish with peach slices and mint.

Fostering Sweet Dreams Helping Families In And Around Edmond By Sherri Hultner With the State seeing the highest rate of children entering into the foster care system, sometimes an immediate placement with extended family cannot occur because of the inability of the caretaker to be able to summon the resources necessary to purchase specific items, sometimes with only 36 hours notice. According to local non profit Fostering Sweet Dreams director Kristy Payne, sometimes caretaker’s who are related to the children in need of immediate
placement are required to immediately have items in place such as car seats, highchairs, beds & bedding and more directly in place before State approval of kinship placement. As a foster mom herself, Kristy Payne understands that all families, who otherwise qualify for immediate kinship child placement, and other non-traditional foster-care placements, do not always have the immediate resources in place to purchase these items instantly, and so Fostering Sweet Dreams was born out of
this need. Here is my conversation with Kristy Payne, who was on her way to surprise and help the pictured single mom residing in Downtown Edmond with beds for her and her children. EA: When did you create Fostering Sweet Dreams? Kristy Payne: We started in March 2016. EA: What caused you to start the foundation up? Kristy Payne: We had started fostering about 13 years ago after we had already had a biological son and daughter, and to which that process took about six months. After we adopted our son, we adopted our daughter who is now nine, my husband felt we were done, with two daughters and
two sons, and could not adopt or foster any more kids. Nevertheless, once it is in your heart, you cannot just walk away, and I feel this is my passion and my calling. I had helped other non-profits out and saw how other non-profits operated, and have helped Citizen’s for Children, Foster Wishes, Casa and other organizations. For me, this niche in Foster care help only made sense, as kinship placement could occur within 24 hours, and these families couldn’t just go out and acquire a bed and bedroom set, car seat or other items which
to some is super easy to acquire, but it is not so easy for so many out there to just go out and spend $500 to $600, and where I had the luxury of shopping by any means possible including amazing garage sales and more over a six month period. EA: What are the qualifications that DHS requires for immediate kinship placement? Kristy Payne: Kinship placement can be approved in as little as 24 hours, by doing a quick background check, but you have to have the bed, the dresser, the car seat

in place for the child to be placed in your home. There is currently no State help with these expenditures, and if the home is a good home but making it paycheck to paycheck, this is a huge gap, and the reimbursement for these items takes as long as six to twelve months until they have completed the program to be reimbursed for these tangible items. EA: Do you serve only kinship placements? Kristy Payne: We started with kinship placements, but after four years, we are now working with child reunification placements, where children are being reintroduced into the family and are visiting for weekend visits, but the parents must have the bed in place, and removal
prevention to help parents who are seeking help to not have their children removed. It is really rewarding because these parents are working really hard to keep their kids in place or to get their kids back. EA: Does Fostering Sweet Dreams offer families more than just beds? Kristy Payne: We do! Our primary item to offer families is the bed, dressers when we get them in, car seats, bouncy seats, high chairs, things like this. EA: What happens if the donated items aren’t provided to families? Kristy Payne: This happens sometimes, so there is another Edmond non-profit named All Things Baby that we donate excess items we may have in stock. EA: Are donors able to deduct any
giving to Fostering Sweet Dreams? Kristy Payne: Absolutely! We are a 501(c)(3) and provide receipts with our EIN number necessary to claim as a tax deduction with the IRS. EA: Are you located on Edmond Rd? Kristy Payne: Yes! We are located for drop off donations just west of Broadway in Downtown Edmond at 529 West Edmond Rd (2nd Street) and we are hoping to move to a larger location soon!

According to Lovett, Bill and his late wife Bonnie Hearne "used to play a place called Corky’s in the Montrose area of Houston. I would get a seat right up next to the stage and sit in front of Bill and try to figure out all his guitar licks.”
New Mexico Rain The Blue Door at 2805 N. McKinley Avenue is the site of the Oklahoma City premiere of the award-winning short documentary New Mexico Rain: The Story of Bill and Bonnie Hearne. The film is the work of OKC-raised director and producer, Bunee Tomlinson. New Mexico Rain is a story of the love, tenacity, and talent of Bill and Bonnie Hearne. Bill was legally blind from birth and Bonnie was totally blind, yet they were able to parlay their musical talent into a successful musical career and their love and tenacity into a marriage that stood the test of time. Their unique style of music made them essential acts in the venues around Austin and northern New Mexico. Lyle Lovett, Robert Earl Keen, Michael Martin Murphey, and others, give glimpses of Bill and Bonnie’s influence on them personally and on this style of music even today. Bunee was born in Romania and lived in an orphanage until he was adopted by an Oklahoma City couple at six years of age. He has been producing film and video content in Oklahoma and beyond for over 10 years. His current film, New Mexico Rain, has shown in multiple film festivals and won the Judges Choice Award at Doc Sunback Film Festival and Best Documentary and Best Music Score at Sunny Side Up Film Festival. “It’s great to be back in Oklahoma City and I’m excited for New Mexico Rain’s premiere in my hometown,” says Tomlinson. “We hope to see many in the community out for the screening and for what’s sure to be a fantastic concert by the great Bill Hearne.” Bill's greatness lies in his interpretive skills. His husky Texas baritone finds its way into a song’s interior with the mellowness of fine bourbon and the warmth of a Sunday picnic. And of course, there’s his pickin’, a style he calls ‘cross picking.’ He picked up the guitar when he was seven years old. According to Hearne, “Since I didn’t have people to play with, I developed a style that incorporated a percussion rhythm while
Citizens Bank of Edmond Named 2019 Beacon Award Finalist Citizens Bank of Edmond was incredibly honored to be named one of the Journal Record’s 2019 Beacon Award honorees in the category of “Charitable Influence”. On July 11, 2019, The Journal Record’s Beacon Awards recognized 23 businesses and organizations for their contributions to their community in three categories, including “Charitable Influence”, “Philanthropic Impact”, and “Nonprofits Serving Nonprofits”. The organizations recognized in the “Charitable Influence” category demonstrate a company culture that encourages and supports volunteerism, charitable giving and community involvement by its members, as described by the Journal Record. Founded in 1901, Citizens Bank of Edmond has been an integral part of the Edmond community since before statehood. Over the last six years the bank has increased its community involvement by implementing several major initiatives to increase economic development in downtown Edmond, including its seasonal Heard on Hurd street festival and its regular “Cash Mob” events at local businesses. “We were so thrilled to even be considered as one of the finalists for this prestigious community leadership award,” said Citizens Bank of Edmond’s President & CEO, Jill Castilla. “Just to be listed among the likes of the other honorees in our category is incredibly special and we are so grateful.” Citizens wants to say a huge congratulations to all the overall winners of the categories, but most specifically to Cancer Treatment Centers of America, who was the overall 2019 winner for “Charitable Influence”.

Jill Castilla To Represent Oklahoma As A New Civilian Aide To The Secretary Of The Army The U.S. Army appointed an Edmond resident as a new Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army during an investiture ceremony Aug. 16 at the Pentagon. The Honorable Ryan D. McCarthy, Acting Secretary of the Army, selected Jill A. Castilla to represent Oklahoma (North). “Jill, you are joining a very elite group of CASAs. Your services are needed now more than ever as the number of Americans serving in the military continues to decrease,” McCarthy said. “CASAs are having a significant impact in their communities. Last year, we were unable to reach our recruiting marks across the United States, but with the help of the CASAs and their community connections, they are growing. I am confident we will make our recruiting targets in these priority cities.” “My early experience as an enlisted member of the Army and Oklahoma Army National Guard provided the structure and opportunities that led to my later personal and professional achievements,” Castilla said. “I’m honored to share the unique benefits of Army service and engage with the patriotic spirit of Oklahomans. “As a CASA, I look forward to connecting the community with my experience as an enlisted soldier, an Army spouse, a military mom and a community leader, while amplifying the support and message of Secretary McCarthy.” Castilla leads Citizens Bank of Edmond, Edmond, Oklahoma, as president and chief executive officer and as chairwoman of its bank holding company. Castilla joined Citizens in 2009, transforming the struggling small institution into the most innovative community bank in the nation. She is a described as

a visionary, inventor, financial industry social media influencer, and is a frequent keynote speaker on leadership, banking and technology. She also serves as dean, Southwest Graduate School of Banking, Southern Methodist University, and as a presidential advisor, University of Central Oklahoma. Prior to her career in community banking, Castilla served in management roles, Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, and was an Oklahoma National Guard enlisted member. She and her husband of 25 years, Lt. Col. Marcus Castilla, serve as copresidents, West Point Parents Club of Central Oklahoma. She holds a master’s degree in economics, University of Oklahoma, a bachelor’s degree in finance, Hawaii Pacific University. She is a graduate of both the University of Wisconsin Graduate School of Banking and the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania Executive Leadership Program. CASAs are a vital part of the Army, promoting good relations between the Army and the public and advising the Secretary about regional issues. Each state, the District of Columbia and the five U.S. territories have one or more CASAs appointed to provide a vital link between the Army and the communities for which they serve. CASAs are usually business or civic leaders who possess a keen interest in the welfare of the Army and their communities. CASAs serve a two-year term without compensation. Terms may be extended to a total of 10 years of service. The secretary may recognize a civilian aide as a CASA Emeritus after 10 years of service with distinguished service.

3rd Annual Heard On Hurd Film Festival The 3rd annual Heard on Hurd film festival was hosted in the Citizens Bank of Edmond lobby, and featured seven different short independent films from local filmmakers. During the film festival, each director had the chance to introduce their film and answer questions from the audience. The 3rd annual film fest was organized in partnership with deadCenter Film and included popcorn from Oklahoma Gourmet Popcorn and specially designed cookies from Eileen’s Cookies. “deadCenter Film is excited to partner with Heard on Hurd to showcase the voices of seven talented Oklahoma filmmakers.” Said the deadCenter Film Festival Director of Programming, Sara Thompson. “As past deadCenter films, these titles get our stamp of approval and we are thrilled to share these stories with a larger audience. One of deadCenter’s biggest loves is to promote Oklahoma film and we couldn’t be happier that Heard on Hurd wants to share this experience”.

Trauma And The Responsibility Of Change Chad McCoy, M.A., LPC Traumatic events are horrible. Often they are the extreme closing of the gap between the malevolence of what I know can happen within the world and what has happened to me within my life. For instance: Many of us won’t maybe say this aloud, but your loved ones are one car ride away from never seeing you again; and you living the rest of your life without them. If that doesn’t stop you for a moment, I’m not sure what could. That would be trauma. Trauma, especially some of the more heinous events (e.g. sexual abuse, traumatic medical injury, etc.) often happen and turn our lives upside down. How you lived before is a dreamlike aspiration dreamt up by Pixar, in some circumstances, and a new goal you never thought you’d have. Your life becomes much more difficult mentally, physically,
and often times financially. When horrible events happen, they are not linear in nature. It’s not as though when you experience a trauma everything else in your life continues on and you’re ONLY changed physically, or mentally, or financially. Often times, these traumas ripple and are exponential in their effect. That singular event, ripples through your life making all levels of your being a struggle. You disengage from family, friends, and other social connections. You lack the motivation to engage in what was a simple task like brushing your teeth, or even getting out of bed. Making it through another day, is the best you can muster. It’s the best you can muster, and it’s all you need; for today. Accept your lack of responsibility for what happened to you, and accept that your life, MY life, OUR lives, are anything but fair. Anything horrible that can happen in this world, to anyone, at any time, can happen to you. This, as best I can tell, is a great place to start the healing. Accepting the responsibility for this unfair hand you’ve been dealt, and the challenge of overcoming it is an arduous task, indeed. This, I’m sure might be a controversial statement for some who are struggling with experienced traumas. “Accept responsibility for THIS?!?! I didn’t want this!” Of course you didn’t; however, the past is to never change, the future is still to be written, and all you have is right here, right now. I can find no better place to start. A trauma narrative is a great way to reprocess the events you unfortunately have in your past, but most recent literature suggests at least 18-months before reprocessing, otherwise this may exacerbate the effects of the trauma and additionally traumatize the individual. There is no changing or taking away of
what happened. There is; however, a different way of looking at it, and harnessing that perspective to create a more productive life for yourself, your family, and the people lucky enough to know you in the future. One way I encourage people to think about trauma is to ask them how their life could have, or would have, been different if that event had never taken place. This is a way of me being able to have them express the goals they have for themselves. We process why that was important for them, to build motivation, and problem solve with them how they can still have those things. This also achieves another smaller goal: Integral steps we can take, here and now, to get to where we want to go. With trauma, we often have to shorten our reference with regard to time. Like I said earlier, after a severe trauma, just getting through the day is enough. That is the best you can give; but it can’t be all that you ever give, for the rest of your life. You have to be willing to engage in smaller steps to set your life back in order. Each day progress, no matter how small the step, or task. After enough time, those small steps will climb that mountain of trauma. With each step forward, we can grow and expand our reference in time to something a couple days out, then a week, a month, and so forth. This all starts with you. Today. Doing the best you can. It’s going to take some time, and be the most excruciating thing you’ll probably ever experience, but I guarantee you it is worth it.
