Clean Your House ~ Literally & Figuratively. This last holiday season was a blur for our family, starting in November for us. November is really one of my favorite months of the year, with both of our son’s birthdays, Thanksgiving and a general feeling of peace. When our boys were small, it started off a crazy time, birthdays with huge wish lists, then a month of Christmas wish lists and of course, how Santa Clause was going to enter the equation. The perception we had as younger parents that everything on the list needed to be purchased always led to mad dash shopping trips while trying to sidestep mom’s & dad’s who were seasonally out of their mind. We’ve found that this wasn’t necessarily such a great idea. This year, we finally figured it out. Before Thanksgiving, I had started deep cleaning our home and realized that we had just too much stuff, and some great things that we hadn’t been using that I just knew someone else would love. Thinking about how certain organizations were collecting for those less fortunate really got me going. By the time I was done, we were left with only what we use daily. No more “Maybe we’ll use this later.” And we didn’t do this so we could fill the house back up on Christmas morning. We each got one another one gift and I have to say it made for a really awesome Christmas season and Christmas morning for our family. We spent more time with each other, instead of out battling the crowds. It was an amazing experiment that I think we’ll just keep as

a new tradition. In addition, the Christmas shopping that we did do was all done in the Edmond City Limits. This was a first for us, and really made for some great & unique gifts that everyone really liked. Now our home and minds are clear of all of the stuff that seemingly was just filler and a distraction to our daily living. As well, everything has its place. It took a lot of focus to accomplish this, along with running a family & business. It can be done if you put your mind to it. As far as New Year’s Resolutions go this year, we are continuing this trend to clean out all of our houses, both literally & figuratively, without the fear of dropping list’s off. We’ll all just go about taking care of what needs to be taken care of, one thing at a time. In this issue, we’ll talk about change in color for the new year with Jennifer Hick’s in My Home, how to address your garden with the dry conditions with Bruce Maxwell in My Yard, more great tips for Happiness Vol. 2 with Leann Richardson, How to Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions in Mind & Body with Haley Ray, and we go over all of the amazing events that happened here in Edmond that remind all of us how important family and friends really are, in our 2010 Year in Photos feature. And if family is your main concern, please read our Local Hero feature about how a mom, in her passing, may have just saved her two daughters lives. Happy New Year to all of you! 2011 is going to rock!

Edmond Wine Shop’s Vance Gregory

Thirty seven years ago there were only 2 licensed

“Wine & Spirit” stores here in Edmond. This was a new

concept then, one that many didn’t think would work. With competition being heavy, all one can do is have great

customer service, excellent selection and have a great connection with the public.

Vance Gregory, owner of the Edmond Wine Shop,

located at 15th & Boulevard, does just that. This last month his shop turned 37, and Vance proved that he is ahead of the

curve when it comes to all three of these concepts. Vance does extensive research with his wine collection to offer the best and the most unique brands, and his main goal is

to help educate people on their wine choices. And, there

isn’t an employee in his store that can’t help you on the same level as Vance. This level of service is what has put Edmond Wine Shop at the top of the list, here in Edmond.

Be sure to stop in, and if you have questions about your

selection, just ask!

HAPPINESS VOLUME 2

By Leann Richardson, M.Ed., LPC

My next mission is to dissect the “TEN RULES FOR HAPPINESS” with a

little more depth. We tend to achieve things more readily when we understand

how they apply to us so we begin to act more purposeful in our daily lives and do more goal setting.

Rule #1: Don’t equate happiness with money. People adapt to income shifts

relatively quickly the long lasting benefits are essentially zero

Absolute truth, money won’t make you happy but another key piece is

that a University of Toronto study has found that when you are happy you see more. When you are in a happy mood, researchers have found that the visual

cortex is able to process more information. You see more details when you are

happy than when you are in a negative mood. These findings fit in nicely with other research findings that we are more intelligent, make better decisions, and are more creative when in a positive mood.

Sounds like a happy employee also could be receiving job promotions rapidly

moving him nicely up the pay scale or possibly becoming an entrepreneur with a vision that has them quickly heading towards the Forbes 500 list. So who says happiness can’t help you make money if happiness will allow you to process more information or being in a positive mood will enhance problem solving skills causing you to do better at what you are doing.

Now that should make you want to set your New Year’s resolution’s goal

as to getting happy this 2011. Which I know you can do but you have to follow

rules 1-9 of the rules for happiness on a daily basis to achieve your goals if

you are really serious about getting happy! Purposefully do something today that makes yourself and one other person happy!

Generator Safety Tips By Sears.com

Even though we have yet to have a harsh winter fall upon us yet, as we have in years past, we just hate hearing the news stories when the power fails about whole families having to go to the hospital or worse. We’ve partnered with Sears Hometown, Edmond’s locally owned Sears store, located on 33rd St. just west of Broadway, to give you tips, when the time comes, on how to use your generator safely and how to choose the correct wattage for your personal needs. This may seem like an off topic, with the weather being so mild right now, however Oklahoma has crazy weather and it’s better to be prepared. Whether it’s for snow/ice storm power outages, tornado power outages or for camping out with friends or family in the spring, we hope you read these tips and keep this information handy! Selecting a generator that is correct for your needs: • Depending on their wattage output, generators will run anything from a small lamp to a number of large appliances. • To determine the size generator you will need, total the wattage of the maximum number of items you will be running simultaneously. For items with start up ratings higher than their run ratings, use the higher rating to determine your power requirements. • Inductive load appliances and tools such as refrigerators, washers, and power tools require additional wattage for starting the equipment. The initial load only lasts for a few seconds on startup but is very important when calculating your total wattage. If you’re running a 100 watt light bulb, a 200 watt slow cooker, a 1,200 watt refrigerator with a start up wattage of 2,900 watts and a 750 watt TV would require 3,950 watts. Portable generators come with two kinds of engines: • Side valve (SV) lawn mower type engines are designed for short duty jobs. • Overhead valve engine for long term or industrial applications. Safety & Important Operating Considerations: • Make sure you follow all safety precautions in the manufacturers instructions. • Be sure that children are not in the area while setting up or operating a generator for use. • Move your generator to a well-ventilated area outside your home. Do not use generators indoors as that may lead to carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. • Keep your generator away from water and rain. • Check oil and gas. Store generator fluids appropriately

after using. • Always shut down the generator when refueling. • Always follow proper maintenance intervals. • Perform a dry run of your generator to make sure you are familiar of how you will operate it during a power outage. • Keep a flashlight handy to find your way to your generator. • Keep your generator conveniently located. • If your generator is equipped with electric start, keep the battery charged. • Run your generator occasionally to keep the engine well lubricated. • Keep an adequate supply of fresh gasoline and extension cords. (Use a fuel stabilizer in your fuel if you plan on storing it for extended periods of time. We learned this the hard way with 4 lawnmowers in 5 years.) edmondactive.com 11

Tend To Your Tools By Bruce Maxwell

Happy New Year to everyone. Hope all was well with your Holiday season. It was one of my best ever. It seemed to be more relaxing than in past years. Thank all of you for shopping local this year. We had the best Christmas in 5 years at The Paper Lion. Thanks to you. I’m so grateful for all my blessings. Well enough said, on to what we all enjoy. It has been a very dry winter so far. (Unlike last year). If precipitation has been deficient (1” of snow of 1/10th of an inch of water), water lawns, trees, shrubbery, especially broadleaf and narrowleaf evergreens. Double check moisture in protected of raised beds. If you did not treat young pines for tip borers in November, do so before March. Check the gardening tools and equipment for repairs. Sharpen blades, repair mowers, edgers, sprayers and dusters. Inspect your irrigation systems. Make sure

12 edmondactive.com

they’re winterized. Control overwintering insects on deciduous trees and shrubbery with dormant oil sprays when temperature is above 40 degrees. Do not use dormant oils on evergreens. A product containing glyphosate plus a postemergent broadleaf herbicide can be used on dormant bermuda grass in January and February when temperature are above 50 degrees. Make sure all planted beds are mulched at a 2” depth. Really there’s not a lot to do this month. It’s really been too cold to do much. These are just a few things we can do to prepare our landscapes for a nice transition into springtime which will be here before we know it. Thank goodness. Until next time, take care of yourself and be what you were born to be. Bruce Maxwell

Judy’s Story By daughters, Stacey Holden and Wendy Shepherd photo by Janna Goodwin

Cancer…it’s not what we ever expected on November 9th, 2010. That’s the day our mother, Judy Werber, went to have a “routine” gallbladder surgery. Instead, the surgeon discovered that she had tumor cells throughout her abdomen, which appeared to originate from her ovary. When mom woke up from surgery, we had to tell her the devastating news. This was a moment in time that we will never forget and the next 19 days would prove to be a whirlwind of emotions for us, our family and friends and especially for our mom. Before now, our mom loved life! She truly stopped to smell the roses. She enjoyed her daily walks with Annie, her dog. But to her, Annie was another child. Mom’s smile was beautiful and contagious. She was a child care provider, but it was hardly just a job to her. She spent her life pouring into the lives of the children she kept as well as their parents. She loved to shop, garden and go out to eat. Above all, our mom loved her family. She loved her grandchildren so much…all 6 of them! The day after her surgery, she had a CT scan to pinpoint exactly where the cancer was. We found out that the cancer had spread like a wild fire to many vital organs, including the liver. Thus, mom had stage 4 ovarian cancer. She only lived long enough for one appointment to her oncologist where she was tested for the BRCA genetic mutation that we later found out she was positive for. A BRCA genetic mutation increases the chance of breast and ovarian cancer. It’s likely our maternal grandmother, had the mutation as well. She died from pre-menopausal breast cancer at the age of 38. We couldn’t understand why our mom wasn’t diagnosed earlier. She wasn’t feeling herself back in May, just six months prior. She then began to reach out to her doctors. Her symptoms were indigestion, back pain and bloating. The doctors were not thinking about the possibility of cancer. She received many misdiagnosed ailments such as a urinary tract infection and congestive heart failure. All of which, was four months after her initial symptoms developed. Those four months proved to be crucial time lost, as her cancer was extremely aggressive. When this was presented to the oncologist, his response was “When one hears hoof beats, what is your first thought? 99% of people will think of horses.” On November 28th 2010, we lost our dear mom. That day, our mom became an unwanted statistic. Our message to you today is simple. Please be in tune with your body and educate yourself. Ovarian cancer is the deadliest cancer among women because it is so hard to detect. There are currently no screening tests for ovarian cancer like there are with cervical (pap smear) and breast (mammogram) cancer. Although all the doctors who cared for our 14 edmondactive.com

mother are excellent, compassionate and professional caregivers not one of them pieced together all the symptoms our mother was experiencing. It is up to you, the patient, to understand your body, your family history and be an advocate for yourself. Our mom took care of herself and never missed an annual pap smear or mammogram! The symptoms of ovarian cancer are vague and often mimic other more-common conditions, including digestion and bladder problems, just like our mom experienced. Symptoms to watch for: • Abdominal pressure, fullness, swelling or bloating • Pelvic discomfort or pain • Persistent indigestion, gas or nausea • Changes in bowel habits, such as constipation • Changes in bladder habits, including a frequent need to urinate • Loss of appetite or quickly feeling full • Increased abdominal girth or clothing fitting tighter around your waist • A persistent lack of energy • Low back pain • Excess hair growth If you have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, we advise you to see a genetic counselor about testing for the BRCA gene mutation. Recent research has shown that preventive surgery to remove the ovaries in women who have a mutation in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes can dramatically reduce their risk of developing ovarian cancer. There is also a blood test available called CA 125 which is a protein that is found in greater concentration in tumor cells than in other cells of the body. In particular, CA 125 is present in greater concentration in ovarian cancer cells than in other cells. In most cases, 80% in fact, ovarian cancer is discovered in the advanced stages, often when it is too late. Our mom has not only given us life… she has saved our lives as well. Unfortunately, we didn’t discover our mom’s cancer until it was too late, but our hope is to prevent the same fate for ourselves, our children and many other women. Ovarian cancer whispers, so listen. Stacey and Wendy underwent genetic testing for the BRCA mutation. Both Wendy and Stacey tested positive for the mutation.

How do you balance your business life and personal life?

Now, this is always a challenge! Luckily, it’s one where I am

improving, too. At this point, I am not married and don’t have

children, so it can be easy to let work and community activities take up bigger and bigger chunks of time – especially in terms

of volunteer commitments. I’m learning, though, no matter

how much you enjoy these activities, it’s counterproductive to overlook the importance of personal time. Eventually, you are

spread so thin that no one is getting your best – and that’s no help to anyone! Today, I schedule my time for at the gym just like I

What challenges have you faced as a female in business or

a female owned business?

I’m lucky to work at an organization where the vast majority

(85%) of our employees are women! It is nice to know that women

can achieve a leadership position based on expertise and hard work. In fact, only one man, our CEO, Jordan Herget, is on our Administration Team! He likes to joke how he is outnumbered

in our bi-monthly meetings. It think it also is very encouraging that both Jordan and my past boss, Tayo Fichtl, were both very pro-employee. Both allow me much control over my work rather

than dictating minuate. I believe that at a hospital, there is definite

work that needs to happen to a high degree of success. Therefore,

people really do work together as a team to achieve positive results, regardless of gender.

There were definitely challenges when I first started on my

career path: as a new graduate fresh out of college, I worked

in the publishing industry pitching textbooks to professors. It was certainly difficult to gain respect of both male and female professors when I was three months out of college. I was mistaken for one of their students many times and wasn’t taken seriously

by either gender--mainly because I didn’t take myself seriously

enough. Eventually I wised up and closed some pretty big sales, but it was definitely the steepest learning curve I’ve ever faced. How do you use social media for your business?

How long have you been in business in Edmond?

In 1995, I began my career in Real Estate at Oak Tree Country

Club as the Director of Real Estate and Marketing. Prior to Oak

Tree, I was the Executive Director of the Central Oklahoma

Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Moving from Architecture to Real Estate was quite a challenge. However,

it was an incredible opportunity and stepping stone to owning my own Real Estate Business with Keller Williams Realty in

Edmond. My only child and son, Benjamin Floyd, and I became Real Estate partners in 2002. We have since acquired our own

location at The Kivlehen House located at 525 N. Jackson. It is what Keller Williams National calls a Mega Agent Office. Keller

Williams Edmond is still our Broker, but because of our continued production and sales performance, they have allowed us to have

have remained an Honorary Member of The American Institute of Architects since 1993. Most recently, I joined the Edmond Republican Women’s Organization. I am extremely interested in

politics and the current state of our country. We are extremely blessed to be living in Edmond, Oklahoma where the economy

call a work-o-holic. Our business is service. When a client wants we make ourselves available. We know this is a choice we have to

make. We know that, at some point during the year, sales will be slower. We take that opportunity to slow down, reflect, and spend

some quality time with family and friends. It isn’t easy. I struggle with it every day.

would ask, “How are you going to Get There?” and finally, “What writing. I have found the hardest question to answer is, “What is your Passion?”

The biggest challenge in my life was being a single mom.

Trying to balance parenting and a career, or for that matter putting food on the table was never easy. There were times I felt guilty that I had to spend so much time working. While in the architectural profession, I traveled to Washington and other parts of the country often. Many times, I would take Ben with me.

He has had the opportunity to see many fabulous places and be

part of activities that many children would only read about. It has been a gift to work side by side with Ben since he was 20. I have had to be a mom and a dad to Ben. People wonder why we do

what we do...Ben was my “Big Why.” I wanted him to experience business. The opportunity came for us to work together, and we took it. There are many obstacles you have to overcome to succeed. I see them as opportunities to achieve. It hasn’t been

easy. We set goals each year, put them in writing and look at them every day. This helps us stay on track and focus.

How do you use social media for your business?

Social media is here to stay with regard to marketing. You make

new friends and expand your old relationships through Facebook

2010: The Year In Photos By Chris Hultner

2010 WEATHER It goes without saying that the weather plays a major role in Oklahoma life. We seem to get it all, and then some. In 2010 the weather particularly intense through all the seasons. We kicked off the year with a 100-year blizzard / ice storm that made a mess of all the roads. Just seven days after the 11th anniversary of the May 3rd tornado outbreak, Oklahoma was hit with another tornado outbreak the virtually followed the same path as the 2003 storms. This tme east Norman took the biggest hit with many houses damaged or destroyed. On June 14th, 2010, Edmond was hit with a huge rain storm that, according to NOAA, dropped 12.31 inches of rain inside a 24 hour period. The downpour caused the Chisholm Creek to overflow its banks, flooding every neighborhood along its path and causing millions of dollars in damage. There were cars washed off roadways and swift water rescues, but thankfully no one was killed. In the Summer we didn’t get any relief from the weather. We had the 15th warmest Summer on record and one of the driest as well. Here’s to hoping for a more normal weather cycle in 2011.

Photo Feature 2010 PEOPLE Edmond is full of interesting and talented people and this past

year we got to hang out with a few of them. We got to meet Miss

Oklahoma, Emoly West and found her to be an intelligent and impressive young woman. Hopefully, by the time you read this she will have been crowned Miss America for 2011.

We also got to hang out with our old friend, and Edmond native,

Mat Hoffman. ESPN and another old friend of ours, Spike Jonze, made a documentary of Mat’s BMX career titled “The Birth of

Big Air” In the documentary Mat is credited with progressing BMX ramp riding to new heights by pushing the limits of his bike

and body. Most of the feats highlighted in the documentary I got to witness firsthand while I was a staff photographer for BMX Plus! Magazine.

Another highlight for us 2010 was getting to sit down with

Edmond’s Mayor, Patrice Douglas, for a candid discussion about

promoting local business. Earlier in the year Mayor Douglas

started a campaign to get Edmond residents to spend their money with local business and keep their sales tax revenue here in the city as sales tax revenue dropped six percent in 2009.

Edmond Cheyenne Middle School student, Greyson Chance,

became an overnight celebrity when a YouTube video of his

26 edmondactive.com

rendition of Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” went viral. To date that

video has been viewed more than 36 million times and Greyson

has since signed a recording deal with Ellen DeGeneres’s new record company.

Oklahoma’s first female Governor, Mary Fallin, made a

campaign stop in Edmond during Liberty Fest last July 4th.

Of course she went on to win the election and was recently inaugurated as Governor.

Photo Feature 2010 SPORTS Last year was a big year for sports in Edmond. Our local High

Schools brought home 18 State Championships. UCO played host to the 2010 Sitting Volleyball World Championships. And UCO

also hosted the Endeavor Games—by far the most inspirational sporting event of the year in our great city.
