My Yard March Chores
Bring Forth April Flowers By Sherri Hultner
My favorite time of the year in Oklahoma is March.
Different than in California, where everything is alive & blooming 11 months out of the year, Oklahoma comes alive
this particular month. It’s full of gardening hopes, with all of the plants, trees and flowers starting to bud.
To ensure that you have the best garden you can, take
these steps below to ensure you have the absolute best environment for your garden in the months coming.
1. Feed your soil to ensure that your current plantings
have the nourishment they need to grow their new leaves
& bloom. This also makes for a friendlier environment to plant new items in April.
2. It’s still cool enough to plant shrubs and trees, so if
you are redesigning your garden, replacing items or starting a new garden, it’s the perfect time to do so.
3. This month is the time to finish up all of your major
pruning. This includes grasses and roses. Prune away any
damage from the bitter cold and be sure to clear away any suckers that have started at the base of your plants.
4. Keep your eye out for disease. Farmers Grain on 1st
Street in Downtown Edmond has an amazing selection of
fungicides and can help you with any questions you may
have. They have a fantastic selection of organic or chemical fungicides to choose from.
5. Prune your fruit trees just before the bud’s break.
6. DO NOT prune your vines i.e. wisteria, spirea,
flowering quince, azaleas, camellias until after their spring flowering is complete.
7. If you’re gardening veggies, start your warm season
crops such as lettuce, cauliflower, peas, radish, potatoes, spinach and onion.
8. Watering is the most important thing, besides feeding
the soil in your garden, for March & April. It’s been a dry
winter, besides the 2 blizzards & sub freezing wind chills, and your plants will become parched quickly in the windy
springtime conditions. Be sure you are applying at least an inch of water a week to ensure your current plants have the minimum amount of water needed.
Have fun this spring, I know I will!

2011 Trends: Bridal
Wedding Trends Of 2011
by D’Plazzo Couture Designs / D’Plazzo Wedding Planner / Dacia Heinrich 2011 has already begun and the wedding industry is seeing strong trends that are influencing every aspect of a brides’ wedding from the style of her gown all the way to how her wedding is being planned, with so much in between. We are going to point out the most influential of trends that brides will be seeing this year, and hopefully will take a few pointers and incorporate them in their own big day. Trends tend to influence fashion in the most drastic of ways. This year, wedding gowns are getting a makeover. The past few years have been all about the mermaid silhouette with very minimal details. This year, we are seeing a pendulum change to large dramatic ball gowns that have all types of details. Some of the details that could be seen on gowns include 3D appliqués, layered light fabrics, oversized floras, stylish ruffles and illusion fabric with eye-catching beading. The overall theme of a wedding gown this year is going to be one that helps the bride make an entrance, and a statement! Romance is back and these beautifully sculpted gowns allow us to remember what romance looks like in a gown. One that accentuates a woman’s curves that is light, fresh and full of volume. Layers of material, upon more layers of material, is all the rage and something that will grab the eye of every guest on your big day. As for the accessories that will adorn these gorgeous gowns, this will vary depending on the bride’s unique taste. But, along with the gowns, veils will go back to longer veils with more fabric and even shoulder length veils that have more layers of fabric and detail. A wedding is as good as the venue it is held at. We have seen a huge influx of tradition recently with most weddings being held indoors in the past years. Couples tying the knot in 2011 will gravitate 28 edmondactive.com
towards outdoor ceremony and reception venues because nature is this year’s most popular wedding decor. Ceremonies and receptions are heading to the outdoors while being centered around gardens, barns, vineyards, beaches, mountains, or any scenic backdrop to provide a feeling of romance. The minimal backdrop of an outdoor setting allows personalization for the creative bride and groom. Nature in its raw element, with personalized touches is what makes outdoor weddings so alluring to many couples. D’Plazzo is excited to be a part of this trend as we are working alongside Rosebrook Vineyard in Moore, Oklahoma as their personal wedding planner. Wedding receptions can tend to take on a life of their own. It’s the part of the wedding that everyone loves because its stress free and usually involves food, alcohol, and dancing...what more could a person ask for? Well, receptions have even made a change in their trends for 2011. One of the main fore fronts in reception trends is that couples are embracing and showcasing their cultural traditions and ethnicities. These cultural traditions are being seen through cultural cuisine infused throughout the reception dinner, or wedding decor with bold, ethnic prints. Bright colors and metallic’s are going to be something that is on the wedding color palettes for 2011. Gold, silver, and champagne are being used alone or with hints of purple, teal and yellow to bring about vibrant palettes that are sure to be enjoyed. Another trend in receptions is that many couples’ aren’t wanting their big day to end; so many couples are planning a post-reception after party that is lasting into the wee hours of the morning with rinks, dancing, entertainment and full on fun! 2011 could be considered the year of
“personalization.” Most brides and grooms want their day to be about them and for that to be expressed in every way possible. They are infiltrating their day with details that show who they really are and the things they enjoy doing. Some examples include many receptions have dessert bars that showcase the couples’ favorite desserts and allow guests to sample different goodies rather than having to choose just one large cake. Another is couples wanting to express their values of being environmentally conscious by “keeping it green.” Eco-friendly goods are becoming more mainstream easier to buy, so couples are make this a priority and hopefully encouraging their guests to make this a priority in their life as well. I could go on and on about how couples are making personalization a priority, but the bottom line is that people go to multiple weddings every year, and every couple wants their wedding to be on the top of that list. Personalization and uniqueness is the key to that and one that is being embraced on a high scale in 2011. From wedding gowns to being environmentally friendly, things are changing for the wedding market. It’s important that no matter what the trend is, that you as a bride make sure that your wedding day is a reflection of who you and your groom are. We at D’Plazzo hope that these trends help guide you along in planning your wedding and that if you need a wedding planner or are looking for a one-of-a-kind couture gown, you will keep us at the top of your list.
