Congratulations Kellie! Hometown Interior Designer, Kellie Clements, made it
Duck, Duck, Goose World Record There are World Records for just about anything you
all the way to the final 4 in HGTV’s Design Star competition
can imagine -- longest beard, longest fingernails, how many
of the four finalists to be eliminated from the game. But
on.There are even World Records for nursury school games
-- a feat that is no easy task. However, she was the first all was not lost for Kellie. On the shows web site, fans
have an opportunity to vote for their favorite contestent. Throughout the competition Kellie topped the polls among
the shows fans. And, despite a late push from the fans of
tennis balls a dog can hold in his mouth and the list goes like Duck, Duck, Goose. That record was set by a college
in Canada when they gathered up 1415 students and played the game for 15 minutes back in 2005.
The student body at UCO made a run for that record,
another contestent, Kellie pulled off the win. As her prize,
during this years Stampeed Week, and shattered it! 1634
Way to go Kellie!
Goose to bring the World Record here to Edmond.
Kellie will be the host of an online show on HGTV.com.

Local Heros Bruce Rhinehart & Heide Brandes With what ended up being 62 days of 100 degrees or more and the hottest summer on record, those that are less fortunate had some angels on their side this year. The heat was inescapable and had the potential of being deadly to those without the ability to cool off. That is when Heide Brandes of The Salvation Army and Bruce Rhinehart of Rococos Northpark jumped into action and rallied for local residents to donate box fans. With the help of KFOR and the Bricktown Rotary Club and of course generous local residents they were able to donate over 200 box fans during 105+ weather. This makes all of these organizations our Local Heroes this month, for always making themselves secondary when others are in need! 04 edmondactive.com

Dustin Schmidt
Owner of Ballanced Wellness Chiropractic
Locally Owned: Dr. Schmidt of Balanced Wellness Chiropractic EA: When and why did you start your business, and why did you include acupuncture services along with your Chiropractic practice? Dustin: After working as a police officer for about 10 years, I started going to a chiropractor and acupuncturist for back pain. Being a police officer is a pretty good recipe for back pain. It’s not a normal thing to sit in a car for hours while patrolling, then have to get out and chase or wrestle someone during an arrest, and then go back to sitting in the car or at a desk to do the paperwork… all while wearing a 30 pound belt! After I started going to the chiropractor and acupuncturist, I was intrigued at how many improvements in my overall health that I received. I had more energy and felt better overall. But the big one was my sinus and allergy symptoms. I went from experiencing awful sinus and allergy symptoms for a couple of weeks, two or three times a year, to barely noticing it was allergy season at all. That’s when I decided that I wanted to help other people experience the same improvements that I had. It was a hard decision, because law enforcement is in my family and in my blood. I absolutely love the people in law enforcement, firefighting, and other emergency responder occupations. These people give of themselves every day and put their lives on the line to protect people that they don’t even know, most of the time with very little thanks, just to serve others. After a long deliberation, I decided that by becoming a chiropractor and acupuncturist, I could help those who help others, and that made the decision an easy one. We have been open in our current location for just under two years, and have had an absolute blast! My family has been in Edmond for five generations, so opening our clinic here and treating the community we love, and are such a part of, was an obvious choice. EA: What are the benefits of acupuncture and chiropractic besides when they are needed to heal an injury? Dustin: Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to treat and prevent disease processes, heal injuries, and maintain the balance and strength of the body. Manipulation of the spinal joints has been traced to historical documents from ancient Greece which are now 2500 years old. Although these are the first written records describing manipulative therapy, it is believed that the actual procedures have roots which go much further back in time. Both acupuncture and chiropractic are used for the 08 edmondactive.com
prevention of disease and injury as well as treatment. Most people do not put as much emphasis on the health of their spine as they should. A healthy functioning spinal column is extremely important to the body’s overall health. Just as the skull protects the brain, the vertebral column protects the spinal cord which carries the nerve signals from the brain to every cell, tissue, and organ of the body. An unhealthy spine can result in many more health problems than just an achy back! EA: Is your business located on Facebook/Twitter, and what do you offer your customers there? Dustin: Our clinic is located on Facebook at Fcebook. com/BalancedWellnessChiropractic. On Facebook we post helpful health hints, links to articles about every aspect of health, and info about different functions and events the clinic is hosting or participating in to raise money for charity or educate the public about healthy lifestyles. I am on Twitter at twitter.com/drdustinschmidt. Those who follow my twitter account can expect to get advice and tips about leading a healthy lifestyle and preventing injury while leading their hectic and busy lives. EA: What is your favorite thing about doing what you do? Dustin: All physicians have things about their career that they are passionate about. Some enjoy working with Olympic and other elite athletes, which I have done. But my passion is helping the person who is hurt, has headaches, or other aches and pains, but has to go to work or get the kids to school. I love helping to make other people’s lives easier, helping them feel better and function better, and helping them ultimately lead healthy happy lives. I also love to educate people about the conservative options that are out there to treat conditions. EA: Is there anything you’d like our readers to know about you & your business that makes you different from other Chiropractors locally? Dustin: Something that makes us different is how much of our practice consists of traditional needle acupuncture. It is a big part of what we do, and our clinic has three rooms specifically devoted to traditional needle acupuncture examination and treatment. We chose to design the clinic in this way, because we really noticed a need for traditional acupuncture in the area. Acupuncture works synergistically with chiropractic and the other treatments we provide to get amazing results!

Business Blogging:
The Digital Tale And Why You Should Have One . By Jessica Miller-Merrell, SPHR / CEO of Xceptional HR Your blog tells a story where you set the rules sharing strictly business quips or industry tips or even more personal stories giving your consumer a behind the scenes point of view what makes your business different and original from the rest. Blog’s first made their appearance in the 1990’s and were first used as online diaries for engineers and techies. Over the last 20 years the blog has evolved from online diary to essential business tool that gets to the heart of the matter – transparency and the human component in business. The purpose, content, and information shared on your blog will largely depend on the audience you are targeting, your business’s intended purpose, and your competition. A blog not only allows you to reach new as well as existing customers in different ways, but also provides your businesses chance of being found when someone is searching on the internet. Called SEO or search engine optimization, web crawlers from search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo comb the internet searching and evaluating content making it easier to provide search suggestions and results based on the keyword combinations that people search. While SEO should be an important part of your blogging strategy, your first priority should be creating great stories and content that relates to your current customer base. These stories are more about your area of expertise and less about the product you sell. Consider your blog to be like a newspaper article where you can share your expertise driving better quality leads to you through thought leadership, word of mouth, and community both offline and online. Blogs are short stories normally between 250-600 words. In the blogging world, you make your own rules opting for video blogging or photo blogs to tell your business or personal story. These subtle sales techniques develop a sense of trust that leads to a long-term relationship that goes beyond the sale. Eighty-eight percent of blog readers in the US, trust the information they receive from blogs and over 50% of blog readers have made a purchase because of a blog article or recommendation. So instead of making a sale you are creating a community of fanatics who are passionate and connected about your product, services, and the community you have created. Through your digital storytelling, you have created an army of happy customers, readers, and friends who are quick to share your content to their friends and their friend’s friends, and their families too. The
end result is through the stories you share through your blog, you are able to establish strong relationships not just on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn but you are able to offer your customers and potential customers something your competition can’t – transparency, creativity, and an honest point of view. Blogging isn’t a science. It’s a gut feeling and a point of view that makes your business or organization stand out among the rest. Tell your story and take your business to new places.

Say No To Liquor Law Repeal! By Vance Gregory
I am puzzled by the story “Chamber Wants Wine in OK Groceries” that I read in the Oklahoman. Puzzled as to why the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce, an organization that lists as one of its goals “To create a business climate that attracts new businesses AND (my emphasis) enhances opportunities for existing businesses” seems bent on diminishing the livelihood of so many Oklahoma retail liquor owners who also happen to be Oklahoma citizens. Puzzled by the spin being placed on the alleged reluctance of certain high-profile retailers to enter our market unless our ugly liquor laws are changed. And finally, puzzled by the coverage of this issue by the Oklahoman. From reading this article, all that seemingly stands between Oklahoma City and greater prosperity, higher wages, higher tax revenue and “tremendous economic benefit” is the repeal of the pesky liquor laws preventing the sale of wine in grocery stores. Furthermore, Costco won’t enter our market until our liquor laws are prettier, focusing on other states instead. Really? This sounds a little like the refrain we all heard before Whole Foods decided to open a store in Oklahoma City, doesn’t it? So, Colorado which has 12 Costco Warehouse locations, Utah with 9 and New York with 15, all must be the rare exceptions to this barrier because none of these states allow wine sales in grocery stores, either. Nor does Kansas, Minnesota, Tennessee, Kentucky, Connecticut and Massachusetts, which between them have 24 more Costco locations. Hmm, I must be missing something. Sunflower Market, who provided a very timely open letter of appreciation to the Oklahoma City Chamber Executive Committee thanking them for their “effort to change the Oklahoma liquor laws to include the sale of full-strength beer and wine at grocery stores”, has 12 locations in Colorado alone. More puzzlement. Oklahoma Law mandates that all wine and spirit retail licensees must be residents of this state for at least 10 consecutive years. Licensees must be sole-proprietors or partnerships and are currently NOT allowed to incorporate, NOT allowed to have a financial interest in more than one retail location (so no chain liquor stores) and can ONLY sell alcoholic beverages purchased from Oklahoma licensed wholesalers, with NO other good or wares sold on our premises. These and other state mandates have created the business models that all liquor retailers must follow to retain our licenses. We are totally ill-equipped to fairly compete with the 800 lb gorillas of the retail world, yet that’s exactly what the Chamber of Commerce would have us do,
and for what? The admitted convenience of buying wine while grocery shopping. I would maintain that for every job created by the entry of Costco, Walmart, Target etc., at least two or three would be lost by my fellow independent retailers, a NET LOSS of employment. Furthermore, all the profit that will be taken from the Oklahomans who own these 600 plus package stores, profit that is plowed back into our local economies to support other local businesses and pay local taxes, will make a deafening roar when it flies out of this state to the corporate headquarters of these large chains. Forgetting the issue of fairness, this one reality, the gross transfer of wealth out of our state at a time when we Oklahomans can least afford it, should be enough to give pause. Convenience will come at a cost, a cost in terms of more challenging enforcement and compliance issues, as well as potential for greater abuse. And for those of us who have made sometimes life-long investments of time and effort, this will be a very dear cost, indeed. I would encourage newspapers to continue to pursue this story, but to consider all of the consequences. In the past, the Oklahoman and others have done a great job investigating all aspects of a story. Who is spending the money to support this issue? Who will spend the money on an initiative petition? Why? Who will benefit if this proposed repeal passes? My guess is there is a good story to be told. One without any spin at all. Vance Gregory, Owner Edmond Wine Shop, est. 1973

Dealey Plaza, Dallas, TX. There are few places in
the USA that are as shrouded in as much controversy and
conspiracy as Dealey Plaza
in Dallas, Texas. It’s the site of President Kennedy’s
assassination that happened on
November
22,
1963.
Depending on what account you believe, the crime was committed by a lone gunman,
Lee Harvey Oswald, or it was perpetrated by as many as four shooters.
We’ve all seen the movies,
reenactments, documentaries and books on the Kennedy
assassination, but until you actually visit Dealey Plaza can
you put it all into context. You
can visit the Book Depository. You can stand behind the fence on the “grassy knoll.“ And you can stand in the spots
where Kennedy was shot. You can also visit the Kennedy Memorial there.
It’s just a 3 hour drive from
Edmond to Dallas, but well
worth the experience if you’re a history buff.

Bella Forte Glass Blowing Studio Edmond’s Hottest New Attraction
If you have been to Downtown Edmond recently, then you’ve noticed some new changes happening. Italian Jim’s, originally from Surrey Hills, owned by the McGahan family, is also the home of Edmond’s newest glass blowing studio named Bella Forte. Chris and Micah McGahan are the father & son team that make up the studio, and what a team. Chris has been blowing glass for 7 years now, with Micah following just behind with 4 years experience. Between the two, they create functional glass as well as contemporary pieces of art. Chris’ initial interest, before he actually got started with the glass blowing classes that his wife got him, was that this would make a great hobby where he could blow his own light pendants for his restaurant. After some time practicing, Chris was able to start hanging his pieces at the original Italian Jim’s and people responded immediately.

Edmond’s Hottest New Attraction
At the time, he and his family had wanted to open a nice restaurant where he had the space to highlight his pieces, as well as have the space on site where he could blow glass pieces on order while people sat and ate. After a few years of searching for the right spot, their dream became a reality when The Small Group Architects had moved across the street on Broadway and with some help from friends at the Dean Livey Gallery, everything just fell into place. While talking with Chris, one thing you’ll walk away with is his love of what he does, and most of all, his humbleness. The entire family is just down to earth and they have created an amazing atmosphere with the restaurant/studio combination that really brings Downtown Edmond to life. In addition, according to Chris and after research, Edmond may have the only restaurant/glass blowing studio combination in the country! Stop by 13 & 15 S. Broadway for a bite to eat and to watch Chris and Micah up close, you’ll be amazed.

The most functional of the large boats had to be PT73,
crewed by McHale’s Navy. That boat was sturdy and fast.
It could handle it’s crew of six burly adults without a single
problem. McHale’s Navey blew away toe compatition in the Team Race.
Overall, it was another successful event put on by
Edmond’s Parck & Rec division and one that we hope keeps growing larger each year. It’s, by far, our favorite event of the
summer. If you missed it this year, you have to go check it out next August...better yet, build your own boat and join the fun. You’ll be glad you did. .
