Making Good Daily Decisions Can Save Your Life By Haley Ray / Body Language Cancer sucks. We all know it. And odds are, we all know and love someone who has been diagnosed with or worse, passed away from cancer. As we enter into October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’re reminded of close friends and family members that have been affected by this particular disease. Having a great-grandmother that survived it for many years, and a grandmother that passed away from it recently, the fight against breast cancer is very near and dear to my heart. In memory of those that we have lost, and in honor of the survivors still with us, Body Language is passionately celebrating Breast Cancer Awarness during the month of October. Here’s why: Half of all men and one-third of all women in the U.S. will develop cancer during their lifetimes (Source: Amercian Cancer Society). That’s the bad news. Ready for the good news? More and more research indicates that being in good physical health reduces your risk of being diagnosed with or dying from cancer. That’s not just good news - it’s GREAT news! Making good decisions about your health on a daily basis can literally save your life. So get excited about educating yourself on how to increase your chances of beating the odds against being diagnosed with or surviving cancer! There are many reasons that cancer cells develop. While some of these cells and their growth are genetically transferred, other cancer cell growth is controllable and there are steps you and I can take to to prevent their development (from the American Cancer Society): 1.) Maintain a Healthy Body Weight 2.) Keep Up a Consistent Exercise Program

3.) Limit Alcohol Intake 4.) Limit Processed Food Intake These steps are simple, acheivable, and you can do them! Today! Making these daily decisions can increase your likelihood of defeating cancer before the battle ever begins. How exciting is that? At Body Language Personal Training Studio we want to help you, step-by-step, in creating a daily plan to achieve healthy results. We are committed to helping people get in shape so that they can fight for their life. It is our job to educate people on the importantance of focusing on their health so that they can live a longer life for their family and friends! We take that job seriously and we are committed to your health. Are you? How to Get Involved at Body Language for Breast Cancer Awareness Month: We are sponsoring Terri, a 39 year-old mom to three young children, who was diagnosed this July with breast cancer and are proud to stand beside her as she fights this disease. We are raising money to help offset some of her medical expenses and hope that you are able to join us in supporting her and her family: 1.) Join us at Race for the Cure October 15th, sign up with Team Terri 2.) Order a T-shirt for Team Terri and $5 will be donated 3.) Every Saturday Boot Camp 8-9am will be $5 for clients and non-clients for donation 4.) 5% of all October sales will be donated 5.) And lastly.....start making good daily decisions to save your own life!

Using Mobile Technologies for Business on the Fly By Jessica Miller-Merrell, SPHR / CEO of Xceptional HR Mobile not social media in my opinion is the biggest shift since the Industrial Revolution. With mobile technologies (including social media) you are truly never alone. And since 63.2 million Americans own a smart phone, we can quickly and seamlessly connect with anyone at most any time for business, personal, or family reasons. Mobile technologies serve as a channel to enhance the social media experience. Fifty-four percent of Twitter users surveyed as part of a May 2011 Pew Research study rely on their mobile device to provide real-time updates and information to their social network. Mobile is changing the way not only in how we engage those most important to us, but how we as well as when and where we digest and share the news and information through these technologies. Certainly for businesses both large as well as small, mobile offers a unique opportunity to engage the user. It was just last week that I was traveling near Tampa, Florida, and posted to my social networks (Twitter and Facebook) asking my friends and followers for recommendations or suggestions for dinner in the area. Within literally seconds, I had several viable options as well as addresses and directions in which to get me there. But mobile isn’t just about social networking platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Mobile offers opportunities for businesses to make it easy to be found as the general public relies more on their mobile devices. This includes offering mobile friendly websites that are quick and easy to navigate with built in Google Maps for directions, and easy access to a phone number so I can quickly call for reservations or other questions. As a customer, there is nothing more disappointing than having to work to find these answers. Make it easy for your customer to find the answers and information they are looking for. But not all mobile phone users own smart phones like Blackberries, iPhones, and Android type devices. Smart phones allow mobile phone users access to the internet, but not everyone has a smart phone. Text offers a universal opportunity to reach your customers regardless of their device. One hundred eighty-seven point seven (187.7) billion text messages are sent each month in the United 08 edmondactive.com

States. Text messaging is no longer solely used by boycrazed 14 year old girls. Fifty-four percent of 18-34 year olds send and receive text messages with 34% of 34-54 year olds population also receiving text messages. Text messaging and its use is increasing because it allows users to send a quick and succinct message without the hassle of verbal pleasantries. Text messages are 160 character messages similar to the size of an email subject sent directly to your phone. Businesses can leverage text messaging by offering customers to subscribe to receive mobile alerts using what is called a Short Code. This 5 digit phone number is used for business text messaging called SMS or short messaging service. SMS users must opt in to receive the messages from businesses and is similar to subscribing to an email newsletter. The user can unsubscribe at any time with a simple text message sent to the short code containing the word ‘stop’. Companies and businesses can use SMS to serve as a customer service tool, marketing platform, or quick communication service that offers a 94% read rate. SMS text messaging offers an interactive opportunity to provide updates in real time and solicit feedback or response very quickly. You also do not have to have a large audience for your messaging to be effective. My blog’s mobile club uses text messaging to reach 200 of the blog’s most dedicated fans looking for content suggestions and information in a moment’s notice. Two times a week I send a scheduled message normally posing a question to the group and a second weekly message providing them with the most popular blog post of the week. It’s amazing the insights, information, and feedback I receive from the blog’s most dedicated readers using something so simple. Feel free to test out the Blogging4Jobs mobile club for yourself by texting ‘B4J’ to 55678. Mobile communication provides companies the opportunity to engage customers on the fly putting information and the opportunity for engagement at their as well as our fingertips. Because life happens on the fly and shouldn’t your marketing and customer communicaiton do the same?

How Social Media Affects Our Personal & Business Lives By Jeffrey Taylor, Attorney at Law In my law practice, I deal with a lot of significant issues concerning passive users of social media and the overabundance of information. I find that far too many people passively use social media, even though its influence is exploding. Sites like Twitter, Facebook, and more recently Google Plus, change the ways we interact with friends, family, colleagues, and our unknown stalkers. Now, with the click of a mouse, users can find information about anyone, view pictures of their friends, and share that information across the internet. Technology is truly changing the way we interact. However, these advances also lead to some significant concerns about privacy, protection, and personal space. For instance, social media giant, Facebook, recently took criticism for its laissez-faire approach to users’ privacy and information. The seemingly lax approach by internet companies highlights just how important it is for users to actively control their online personalities. Security experts give simple suggestions such as changing their profile privacy settings (in Facebook go to Privacy Settings under the drop down arrow on the upperright) in such a way as to actively block personal or private information from being released. I become less and less amazed at the number of passive media users who expose themselves with “open” Facebook profiles. This lapse in security seems even more prevalent in under-25 and over60 Facebook users. The ever-growing presence of smartphones similarly exposes active and passive users to intentional and unintentional exposure. The ability to “tag” people and “check in” at places unseals our private lives to outside

viewers. I’m sure Candace Flynn, from the popular television series, Phineas and Ferb, would have a much easier time “busting” her brothers if she harnessed Facebook or Twitter to check in and “tweet” about their adventures. In a similar sense, we need to actively control the information shared about our children or us. Every social media application has settings that allow its user to control location information. Personally, I believe that any sharing narrower than a city level is too much sharing. Finally, each of us needs to exercise strict discretion about what we decide to publish. Remember, those pictures of drunken debauchery can, and often will, come back to haunt you. Employers, lawyers, and law enforcement constantly review social media posts for illegal, inconsistent, or immoral behavior, which could subject the company or you to liability. As this technology use increases, and its proliferance permeates our lives more fully, we too should be more active in discovering how our family, friends, neighbors and colleagues portray us. We should approach social media in our lives and like we approach crime, drugs, alcohol abuse, or domestic violence, and actively work to create protective barriers and rid ourselves of the destructive influences. Active social media use involves adopting strong privacy settings, managing shared content, and ensuring that your public profile reflects your character. Cool Weather brings Cool Plants By Sherri Hultner For those that are new to the area or new to homeownership, mid October into mid November brings the need for cooler weather plantings. We have lived here going on 7 years and I am just now getting used to this idea. Although I had always changed our garden up seasonally for color in California, I had never had to do it because of such drastic weather swings. Like all things in Oklahoma gardening, the winter color is bold & amazing if you purchase the correct plants & flowers. WINTER PLANTING CHECKLIST: • Red Kale ~ we found these at TLC, on Memorial, which was the one place to find large Red Kale locally. Decorative ruffling, and only $6.99. • Medium Green Cabbage ~ we found this medium green cabbage at Under The Sun on 33rd Street for $5.99, grown by Red Dirt Plants in Guthrie. 12 edmondactive.com

• Small white cabbage was found at Under The Sun on 33rd Street, and only priced at $3.99. • Pansies were found at Under The Sun for $19.99 per flat and were big plants compared to the others in the area. Great color selection, too! Mums weather the winter very well, too. • Pumpkins of all sorts were purchased at Sheldon’s Family Pumpkin Lot on Broadway & 5th Street. Total cost of this arrangement, including pumpkins & gourds came to $150. Be sure to amend your garden’s soil with manure to make sure these beautiful plants stay healthy throughout the season and mulch before the first deep freezes become more frequent and they should last throughout the spring growing season.

Arcadian Inn Pumpkin Pancakes Not long ago we stayed at the Arcadian Inn Bed and Breakfast to celebrate our anniversary. We had a wonderful evening and a great stay, made even better by the personal touches of the proprietors, Martha and Gary Hall. For breakfast Martha and Gary brought us a wonderful meal of Tomato and Bacon Quiche and Pumpkin Pancakes. It was awesome! The Pumpkin Pancakes were so tasty and unique that we just had to get the recipe, and Martha was gracious enough to share it with us. INGREDIENTS Pumpkin Pancakes at Arcadian Inn 1 egg 1/3 cup cooking oil 1 (30 oz) can Libby’s Pumpkin Pie Mix 4 cups Bisquick water DIRECTIONS Beat egg slightly, add oil and pumpkin pie mix. Fold in Bisquik. Add water till consistency of pancake batter ( pours easily but not runny). Heat griddle to 350 degrees. Lightly oil griddle. Using a 1/4 cup measure, pour pancake batter on griddle. Bake approximately 3 minutes on each side. Be careful not to burn as these pancakes are very moist and take longer to cook. Garnish with chopped apple, syrup, chopped pecans and a sprinkle of brown sugar!

OU Med Center Edmond Birthing Center For a long time Edmond

has gone without any kind of maternity ward. If you were

having a baby, your only

option was going to a hospital outside the city limits. Now that has all changed with the

recent opening of the OU Medical

Center

Edmond

Birthing Center on the corner of Edmond Road and Bryant.

The new OU Birthing center

boasts 8 large birthing suites, 2

operating rooms and a nursery.

The birthing suites resemble large, comfortable and serene,

hotel rooms more than they do

hospital rooms. There are even

fold out couches for dad to sleep on for overnight stays.

The OU Birthing Center is

also very high tech. Each of the suites has all the monitoring

equipment built in seamlessly,

so it feel less like a hospital. Even the oxygen hookups are hidden behind the wall art.

The security system is also

very high tech. There are sensors throughout the birthing center, and when a baby goes

outside its normal parameter,

the whole floor goes on automatic lock down.

Edmond People

One Year Later:

Judy Werber’s Girls Fight Back By Sherri Hultner In January, our Local Hero was a beautiful and energetic woman named Judy Werber, who 5 months prior was an unlikely candidate. As a family, on November 9, 2011, the Werber sisters, Stacey Werber Holden and Wendy Werber Shepherd discovered, after their mother Judy’s routine gallbladder surgery, that she had terminal ovarian cancer. No warning at all. On November 28, after one treatment, she passed away. We followed the Werber sisters over the last year, through immediate testing, surgeries and the change that comes from losing a loved one so very suddenly. Grief is expected, but what the Werber sisters had going for them was Judy’s legacy. Although these two beautiful young women and their families are grieving everyday, they both inherited the amazing will to survive and do it well. They spent the first 6 months after their mom’s passing researching and then researching some more, asking what seems to be a million questions and talking to as many experts as possible to find out if they, too, had any chance of having the same result as their mom. The answers were not what they had hoped for when they both tested positive for the gene BRCA 1, which is the genetic link to ovarian cancer. And not only ovarian cancer, 22 edmondactive.com

this gene links to an 87% chance of breast cancer. According to Wendy, “BRCA 1 gives us 87% chance of breast cancer (with our mutation it is deeper penetrated so harder to detect and spreads rapidly) and 50% chance of ovarian cancer.” In early 2011, both Stacey and Wendy, both in their early 30’s, underwent hysterectomies and have undergone further testing to see if they will indeed require mastectomies. So far this year, the tests that they have undergone are two mammograms, one breast MRI and one ultrasound, and according to doctors, they still have 47% chance of breast cancer since their surgeries. As well, they have had auricular fine needle aspirations at OU last month. Dr. Dooley is one of about 10 doctors across the country doing the procedure. This test assesses the 3-5 year short-term risk of breast cancer. Stacey and Wendy will be doing screenings for breast every 6 months and every 6-12 months will be doing a CA-125 blood test that is a tumor marker test associated but not conclusive to ovarian cancer. After following both of these amazing women, over the last year, they are a testament to the phrase “Knowledge is power.” Each of them has coped with their grief differently, but both share the same fervent journey to make sure that they each survive for their family’s sakes. They have been running different 5K events in Judy’s honor and would eventually like to start a foundation for education on ovarian cancer in her name. Each of them has come through the last year with superb grace, and the ability to share their story and inform other women of this silent killer.

Occupy OKC A New Era Of Civil Disobedience By Trevor Hultner

It might be easy, driving near the corner of Broadway and Park Avenue in the financial district of Oklahoma City, to mistake the medley of people, foods, signs and ideas congregating at Kerr Park with some kind of social gathering or cultural festival. Loud, colorful signs carrying a variety of slogans line the paths of the park, a fully stocked kitchen and “washroom” has been set up with donations coming in constantly, and a PA system has been set up that can sometimes be heard blasting music of all strains from time to time. However, the gathering at Kerr Park is not a festival, but a local representation of the growing national and international movement of people frustrated with the amount of power corporations have over their governments relative to themselves. What has become known “officially” as the “Occupy Movement” has its roots in several similar occupations that have taken place at home and abroad over the last few years, with the most recent being “Occupy Wall Street.” Other occupations include protests of the University of California state regents’ decision to raise tuition rates by 32 percent in late 2009, the Wisconsin capital occupation against Gov. Scott Walker’s collective bargaining cuts in February and larger national protests in Egypt and Libya – the “Arab Spring” – throughout the entirety of this year. 24 edmondactive.com

“Occupy Wall Street” began on Sept. 17 to minimal media attention or fanfare. Because of its preexisting presence on the Internet, the initial protest groups were not able to organize on Wall Street itself – the New York Police Department had officers blocking entry to the financial center – so they decided to occupy nearby Zuccotti Park, a privately-owned, publicly accessible park later colloquially renamed “Liberty Park.” From Liberty Park, the Occupants of Wall Street have held marches to several locations, including the Brooklyn Bridge, where 700 protesters were arrested, to (as of this writing) Times Square. In the month since the protests in New York City began, hundreds of solidarity protests have been created in major cities across the nation and around the world, including one here in Oklahoma City, two in Norman (including one specifically targeted towards University of Oklahoma students), one in Stillwater and a group in Tulsa. The Oklahoma City occupation has made Kerr Park its home since their second general assembly around the beginning of October. It is made up of people from all different walks of life and all different political leanings. Here are stories of a few of these people from their own mouths and experiences.

Current Events

WILL BRAVER AND STEVEN EDBROOKE Waiters Minimum Wage: $2.13 in Oklahoma, federally, plus tips Why they’re occupying Kerr Park: Steven: We’ve been following Occupy Wall Street since like a week after it started, and it’s something that I’ve been really, really hoping for, for a while. Will: We’re just kind of doing this out of solidarity. Steven: I personally hope that we can get some kind of political reform going on; personally I want to get shorter limits on congressional terms so that they’re not entrenched in there, and if they were to get entrenched in there, then it’s so much easier for us to get them out. And the lobbyists are basically running everything. On Waiting Tables as Employment: Will: I don’t like relying on people’s generosity to pay my bills and my rent. I would much rather be working a minimum wage job, you know, flipping burgers at McDonald’s or something, instead of having to rely on other people. Steven: No, I mean, I used to live out in California, and out there it was $8 an hour plus tips, and the tips were a lot more, so it was around – you’d be making around $22 to $30 an hour. Out here, you’d be lucky if you make $10 an hour. And, you know, I’m a full-time student, full-time worker, and I have to do that to pay for college and housing, so it’s crazy. And what it comes down to: my life is so much harder. And I’m not trying to become a billionaire, I’m trying to become middle class. And I’m finding that my friends who did get through college earlier than I did still don’t have anything, you know, still don’t have jobs. My ex-girlfriend had a masters degree, went to UCLA and got her masters at Oxford, and she was waiting tables.

NICK SALTZMAN Recent High School Graduate, Unemployed Youth and Young Adult Unemployment Rate: 51% Why he’s occupying Kerr Park: Nick: Other than just to be educated by my fellow man, and just sort of learn about their lives and what they have to offer through their personal experiences, I came out here to protest money in politics. It has absolutely no place there. It leads to greed, it leads to corruption. To be perfectly honest, another thing I really hate to see is the standard in this country as far as education goes, that an 18-year-old should have to pay exorbitant prices for student loans, up to $100,000 and become completely indebted to get any form of higher education. And the fact that we don’t have any sort of socialized higher education is just sad. Why is it just a fact of life that people have to enslave themselves up to 40 and 50 hours a week while doing 40 to 50 hours of school and homework? It’s awful. And another fact I’d like to bring up is that since the Reagan years, worker productivity has gone up over 100 percent yet the average worker pay has gone down two percent. Therefore, we’re essentially being paid half as much money as we were in the 80s, which is disgusting to me. And again, I came out here to be educated and to show my support, and I want to be a part of something. I haven’t done a lot with my life, and it feels nice. edmondactive.com 25

High School Football

Changing Of The Guard For a lot of people living in Edmond, High School football is a big deal and their Friday nights are spent sitting under the big lights cheering on their kids or their favorite school. We love football too and our Friday nights are spent much the same way, cheering on all the Edmond Schools. We’re more than half way though the regular season now, and if all goes right, all three Edmond High Schools could make the playoffs. Here’s a rundown on the teams and their seasons, thus far. EDMOND NORTH With only three games to go in the regular season, Edmond North is undefeated and their chances of winning all of their regular season games is very good. According to our weekly ranking, that is based purely on performance statistics, North is the number one team in the state as of press time. In 6A football, only North and Midwest City are undefeated. Under the direction of Coach Jeremy Dombeck, the North Varsity squad plays as a team. Everyone does their job and a lot of them do it very well. They have their fair share of explosive offensive talents like the teams top scoring Running back, Jarion Tudman, who will have amassed more than a thousand yards rushing, by seasons end. Or Quarterback Jesse Mathews who is not afraid to throw the long ball. Mathews has proven to be an asset in the air and on the ground. The real story of North’s great success this year has been their defense. As of this writing the North defense has only 26 edmondactive.com

Edmond Sports

allowed for 50 points to be scored against them in the seven games they have played. They are without a doubt the best defensive squad in the state. To put that claim into perspective, compared to the number 2 defense’s in the state, Norman and Midwest City, have allowed 100 points each. EDMOND SANTA FE To say that Santa Fe has come a long way in just a year would be an understatement. After last years 1-9 season, almost all of the coaching staff has been replaced at Santa Fe. The new Head Coach, Lance Manning, has really turned the Wolves around. They are now 6-1 and are looking good for a playoff berth. Santa Fe has been putting up big numbers in the offense, with a lot of help from Sophomore Quarterback Justice Hansen. Hansen has thrown for more than a thousands yards for 11 TD’s and he’s scored 5 TD’s on the ground. He also has a lot of help from his talented backfield. There are a few challenges coming up for Santa Fe, including the final Edlam game against crosstown rivals Edmond North. This will undoubtedly the most dramatic game of the regular season for both teams/ The winner of this round of Edlam will be crowned as the City Champs.

EDMOND MEMORIAL Over the last few years Edmond Memorial Bulldogs were the top dogs in the city’s dog house. Two years ago they made it all the way to the second round of the playoffs, which was a huge effort for a west side team. And they were the City Champs for the last two years as well. But the funny thing about High School Football is that a lot of things can change from season to season. One of the hardest things to do is to replenish the talent void left by graduating Seniors. This year seems to be a rebuilding season for the Bulldogs. They have the talent and they are 3-1 in conference play, but they face a seriously hard challenge ahead when they have to face undefeated Midwest City. After that they play Norman North and Yukon. Both of those games are winnable for the Bulldogs and success there could land them in the playoffs. 28 edmondactive.com
