around EDMOND
Hi there and thanks for picking up our first ever printed edition of Edmond Active Magazine. I’m Sherri Hultner and here is a little background on how my family came to call Edmond our home. We came to visit Edmond in July of 2005, in between two large motocross races, to check out the town and to see what it had to offer our family. We drove around neighborhoods and the entire town, all after doing internet research on the city, schools, education, and activities for our boys and 3 Black Labradors. The verdict was unanimous, on our drive back to California, that we should move here sooner than later, to get the boys situated in school and with new friends. What drew us to Edmond was how friendly the people are here, the school district, the cost of living vs. California, the historical attributes, the architecture and the scenery. To us Edmond reminded us of San Diego, where my husband Chris was born and raised. We purchased our home on the internet, based on the family vote for which neighborhood we should live in. This blew the minds of most everyone in the motocross industry, and actually turned out relatively well, despite not having a side fence and having a built in room in our garage we were not made aware of. Besides these two issues, we have felt at home here since day one. This last spring we were all talking about our futures and the changes the next year would bring. Our oldest son, Trevor, is in his senior year at North, he would like to go into the Journalism program at UCO, he has an internship at the Edmond Sun and a part time job. Our youngest, Jeff, is in his 8th grade year at Cheyenne Middle School, is involved athletically, with school events, and would really like to become more involved in the community as a whole. Our decision to start Edmond Active Magazine came naturally, as a family decision for all of us, as it became more difficult to spend time together at the amateur motocross events we covered each year. As most parents know, all of the local activities your kids are involved with can take up a lot of time. The most fun we have had as a family
was being able to spend every summer going to races and spending time together, as well as being a part of the community, in amateur racing. We feel the same connection with Edmond with regards to the events and activities our kids are involved with here in town, along with our neighbors and new friends, as we did in the motocross community. Hopefully that will reflect within our content in the coming issues! For our family, October and November always bring about the feeling of humbleness, gratefulness and thankfulness within our household. I think it might be the changing of the seasons, school starting anew, family and friends gathering. Being self employed, things aren’t always easy and because of that we are always cleaning out what we no longer use to give to charity, and hopefully it makes someone’s life a little easier because of our donations. Our feature story this month is about Summer Stolz, a 7th grader at Summit Middle School, and her dedication to Infant Crisis which helps mothers and children through rough times, as well as homeless families. It’s sometimes difficult for some to know how or where they can help, so we have included all the ways you can help local charities get through what is looking like a busy season for those in need, whether it be financial giving, your time, or clothing and food donations. We have been able to connect with the community in so many ways, since July, and a few include our Twitter, Facebook and MySpace pages, as well as our website, www.EdmondActive.com. As of this writing we have over 1,300 following along with our weekly column titled aptly “Around Edmond”, which highlights exceptional people and businesses in and Around Edmond, Locally Owned, which highlights Edmond businesses, community events, sports coverage and more. We will be evolving online regularly, so keep visiting to see our changes! We would also like to thank Jennifer Hicks of Designing Diva, who is contributing to our My Home section, and Chris Marlatt of Body Language Fitness, who has been a friend to us since 2006, helped us lose a combined 125 lbs in 2007, and who is contributing to our Getting Fit section. These two people, from the very concept of Edmond Active Magazine, could see our vision and understood exactly how our publication will be different from any that are currently out there. And most especially, to the business owners who are supporting us, on what some are calling “Blind Faith”, we will always be in your debt for seeing our vision when others could not. We have always worked hard and will continue to work hard, for our readers and for the businesses here in Edmond, and hopefully our magazine will reflect the forward thinking attitude, hopeful and giving nature that we have always seen and experienced. We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed putting this first issue together for you!

POPS ON ROUTE 66 One of the coolest new attractions on the World famous Route 66 is Pops in Arcadia, just over the Edmond border. From the road you are greeted by a 66-foot pop bottle and a building that more resembles a Star Wars spaceport than a gas station This unique gas station / diner boasts the largest variety of soda pop we’ve ever seen. You can choose from over 400 different brands of pop and enjoy a tasty burger in their diner. For a family, Pops offers one of the most interesting dining experiences in the state. Plus, the burgers are delicious. Definitely a great night out experience and the kids will love it. Pops is the brainchild of Aubrey McClendon, chairman and CEO of Chesapeake Energy and it opened in the summer of 2007. The beef used at Pop’s comes from No Name Ranch, where the cattle are raised organically, without the use of steroids or antibiotics and their feed is pesticide-free.
HIDEAWAY PIZZA Anyone who knows me, knows I am picky about pizza. That being said, after checking out the Farmer’s Market, Chris and I decided to drop by Hideaway, next door to the UCO JazzLab, to do our first restaurant review. Right through the front door, Hideaway was totally welcoming. We got right in and were seated in the enclosed patio. My first thought was that the restaurant itself was very stylish, especially for a pizza place. The waiter took our order right away, and whether you are ordering for a family or for two, the prices were very affordable. Our pizza came and I was surprised that a Hideaway medium pizza is the same size as a large with some of the other “delivery” pizzas in town. And, the final result, this was probably the best pizza I have ever tasted, hands down. Not too heavy on the sauce, option for hand tossed crust, very fresh ingredients. Most important, VERY tasty! We ordered for a family of 4, a medium Pepporoni/Supreme along with drinks and the bill came in just under $20, and along with the cool environment, Hideaway Pizza is at the top of our list for dining out in Edmond with a family!

around EDMOND MUSIC REVIEW: Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medicine
By Trevor Hultner DEAD KENNEDYS ARE BACK! Okay, not really. But ex-Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra is out and about with his new band, the Guantanamo School of Medicine, and their new infant debut album, “The Audacity of Hype.” This nine-song rager isn’t quite what you’d expect sonically–it’s taken me more than a couple of listens to get used to, compared to Dead Kennedys’ familiar sound–but it more than takes the cake for best album of 2009. The musical styles on “The Audacity of Hype” run the gamut of Biafra’s musical career, from the Dick Dale surf-guitar-on-speed sound of Dead Kennedys to the grungier sound of his one-off collaboration with Northwest pros The Melvins. On the whole, though, this album really
stands alone from anything else he’s done. TRACK-BY-TRACK 1.) The Terror of Tinytown: I don’t have a lyric sheet in front of me, but from what I gather, Biafra is still pissed off at the previous president. It goes on a little bit too long, but that’s not a huge detractor Great, biting song. Not the best but still great. 2.) Clean As a Thistle: This song is a laugh fest. Extremely topical, and I’m not going to tell you why. If you don’t buy it/download it on iTunes/”Find” it through other methods I guess you’ll never know. 3.) New Feudalism: This song is OLD. According to the Alternative Tentacles website, “New Feudalism” first showed up on December 1st, 1999, at the No WTO rally in Seattle. Sad fact: This song is STILL relevant. Cool fact: Biafra played this song live with Krist Novocelic from Nirvana and Kim Thayil from Soundgarden at the rally. 4.) Panic Land: This one is a little bit weird. It’s about mass paranoia, but I’m having a hard time really enjoying it. The drums sound strange, the lyrics are eh... and the effects on the guitar are starting to get annoying. And there’s some kind of strange random blues solo in the middle. By far not the best song here. 5.) Electronic Plantation: This is another
artifact from the Battle in Seattle. The bass opener and funny electric “Transformers” noise remind me vaguely of Holiday in Cambodia. Great song. 6.) Three Strikes: This one is kind of unique. In a good way. It’s got a great 60’s psych rock/spaghetti western feel to it. It falls in the top three songs on this album, and probably one of the best Biafra has ever written. 7.) Strength Thru Shopping: It’s like Miserlou with Biafra’s vocals thrown in. Total sucker for Dick Dale. Total sucker for this song. It’s gonna be the 2009 Adbusters “Buy Nothing Day” anthem for sure. 8.) Pets Eat Their Masters: This is straight-up a Dead Kennedys song. Would totally fit on FrankenChrist. 9.) I Won’t Give Up: This is the final song, but it’s really seven minutes of really sort of upbeat rock’n’roll followed by six minutes of silence followed by eight minutes of some of the most heinous (but in a good way) noise ever put on vinyl/CD/MP3. It’s also one of the only songs on the left side of things to really criticize the current president. This is a truly amazing album. It’s perfect for old and new fans of Biafra’s work, and it will no doubt age well in a time of unexciting one-hit punk wonders.

Did you know that you can get just about any kind of food you can think of, on a stick? There was steak on a stick, cheese on a stick, pizza on a stick, avocado on a stick and the ever-popular corn dogs. If a meal on a stick is not your Cup-O-Noodles, there’s always turkey legs or roasted corn, dipped in butter. Yum! DOWNTOWN FRIGHT FEST The place to be on Halloween was the Trick-Or-Treat party, hosted by the City of Edmond in Downtown Edmond. Thousands of ghost’s, gobblins and super hero’s packed the streets of Downtown collecting candy from local businesses and bouncing around on the 4 Jolly-Jumps. Definitely a huge hit with kids young and old alike.

The Carboard Boat Reggata at Lake Arcadia this summer was a huge hit and one of the most entertaing events hosted by the City of Edmond. If you want to participate in the next reggata, you have until August to plan and build your all-cardboard boat. Get busy.
If you really dig classic cars then you were most likely at the Route 66 Car Show in Hafer park. They had everything from Model T’s to 57 Chevy’s. There was even a VW Bug dressed as a fire truck, complete with a dalmation as a mascot. Don’t miss this car show next September.
Without much fanfare or notoriety the students and faculty at UCO placed thousands of flags around the pond to comemorate the eighth anniversary of 9/11.

Outdoors? Traveling abroad? Having an intimate family gathering? 2) What is my home’s primary function? Shelter only? Play? Inspirational creative space? A retreat? 3) How do I want my home to feel? Energizing or relaxing? Bright and cheerful or calm and subdued like a spa resort? 4) What do I treasure? Family heirlooms? Original artwork? Vintage finds? Now look at the themes that keep popping up in your answers. What seems to be of importance to you? Now look around your home. Do the objects in it contribute to the vibe you just described? my YARD
THE LAWN MOWER My relationship with lawn mowers has always been one of love and hate. The love part comes in the Spring when it’s time for the first cut. For me, that signifies the official end of Winter and the return of green trees and green grass--my favorite time of year. The hate part comes a few weeks later, when the lawn mower stops working. It’s not a gradual thing either. They just quit. Puff of white smoke. Done, just like that. Since moving here from California, four years ago, we have gone through exactly four lawn mowers. For each of the lawn mowers the cause of death has been the same, bad gas. To make matters worse, I have tried to repair the deceased lawn mowers and I can’t tell if I made the problem better or worse. The result is the same. They still don’t work, no matter what I do. I’m no mechanic, but I do understand the workings of a small, internal combustion engine. I always try the normal stuff like cleaning the air filter, changing the spark plug, checking the magneto connection and attempting to clean the carburetor. Oh, and as a side note, don’t bother looking for lawn mower parts on a Saturday after 1:00 pm. Just about every repair shop in Edmond closes at 1:00. Go figure. The one thing I never did, though, was care
for my lawn mowers very well. I admit that. I didn’t run them dry at the end of the mowing season. I didn’t empty the gas or oil. And worst of all, I stored them outside during the Winter. So, yes, I deserved what I got. How does gas go bad? The more volatile chemicals in gasoline can
evaporate away making the gas a more dense liquid and less volatile. If the gas isn’t stored correctly it can break down quickly. What about gas with ethanol? The manufacturers say that Ethanol will store as long or longer than gas, but there aren’t really any facts to support the claim. Alcohol grabs moisture out of the air and that can lead to water contamination of your gas. This is especially true in areas with high humidity, like Oklahoma. What’s the best way to store gas? In a clean gas can with a sealed cap. Also, the container should be nearly full to cut down on evaporation. Adding a fuel stabilizer like StaBil doesn’t hurt either. While gas breaking down won’t have much of an effect on your cars engine, it does have a profound effect, as I have found all too well, on small engines. Prevention is key to keeping your lawn mower alive. When the grass cutting season is over, drain the fluids from your mower, clean the air filter and store it in the garage. Take whatever remaining fuel from your gas can and put it in your car. When it’s time to start mowing again, put some fresh oil and gas in it, change the spark plug and you should be good to go. Good luck.

EDMOND FOOTBALL
101
How could you not be a football fan in Oklahoma? When it comes to football, Oklahoma has a lot to be proud of. Forget that we don’t have an NFL franchise. Who cares? We do have two top college teams in OU and OSU—and college ball is more fun to watch anyway. But nevermind all that, we’re here to talk about football in Edmond, and that means High School football. We’ve got all you could want for football, right here in Edmond. We’ve got drama, rivalries, underdogs, heros, upsets, turf wars and pride all playing out under the lights every friday night in the Fall. What more could you ask for? Each of our High School teams—Memorial, North and Santa Fe— bring their own blend of prowess to the field each week. Memorial with their killer defense, North with their awesome offense and Santa Fe with their all-around balance have made for some incredibly exciting games this season. edmondactive.com

EDMOND SANTA FE Over the last six years Santa Fe has been the dominant team in Edmond football. They’ve won 4 consecutive City Championships—’05-’08—and they were in the chase for the State Championship in ‘05 and ‘06. For a team with such a rich pedigree as Santa Fe, the 2009 season has been a hard one to swallow. As of press time they have one of the worst records in Oklahoma 6A football at 7 losses and only 2 wins. But in all reality the Santa Fe team is much better than their record reflects. By the numbers, their offense has been effective in moving the ball and have earned more than 2000 yards for the season. As well their defense has been strong enough to only allow 184 points. So what’s been the problem? In short, they just can’t catch a break. Most of their losses have come in close games and they have yet to be dominated by an opponent. Sometimes, in sports, it’s better to be lucky than it is to be good and the luck just hasn’t fallen in Santa Fe’s direction this season.

EDMOND NORTH Edmond North started this season like they were shot from a cannon. They won their Edlam opener against Santa Fe, then they beat Mustang, then Yukon, then Lawton Eisenhower, then Norman and finally they topped Putnam City. Their streak was 6-0, their best consecutive win record in school history. Then it all began to unravel. During one of their toughest challenges of the season, against Midwest City, North’s quarterback, Travis Townsend, suffered a high ankle sprain and the team recorded its first loss. But with backup quarterbacks Benway and Rossi, they were able to defeat their next opponent, Putnam City West. However, it would be the following game that would define their season. With an overall record of 7-1 coming into the final Edlam game against Memorial, you would think that North would be considered the top dog in this match up. However, both North and Memorial lost a conference game to Midwest City and for both teams their conference record was 4-1. They were tied for second. That final Edlam game would answer all the questions and define a clear frontrunner heading into the playoffs for the District 2 Championship. With Travis Townsend nursing an ankle sprain and star Running back Qua’Don Henderson out with an injury, North was at a huge disadvantage and it showed early on. In spite of the injury Townsend still played. While you have to give him credit for manning-up, he was not as effective as he normally is. Memorial’s tough defense was just too much for the battered Huskies. Looking forward, the Huskies will have an opportunity for redemption as they are headed to the playoffs, along with Memorial and Midwest City.

BROOME’S FRIED PIES by Sherri Hultner
Broome’s Fried Pies is the creation of Robert Broome III and has been located on the I-35 Service road since the beginning of 2009. Broome’s Fried Pies was born from a road trip to Texas by Robert and his wife, where they stopped off to get a snack and Robert was immediately inspired. This business is hand grown from the ground up and the restaurant as well as Robert is an inspiration to anyone who knows him. Robert Broome III is also a terrific person to get to know and really makes you feel welcome when you are visiting his establishment! He creates hot, fresh pies everyday, made as you order them that are akin to turnovers and are fried in peanut oil (less trans fats than regular vegetable oil) and gets rave reviews from everyone who has stopped in. He makes several different varieties including fruit pies, hearty meat pies, cream pies, berry pies and specialty pies. His specialty is his Brownie Pie, which is next on our list to try out. On November 4th he relocated to the Two Brother’s Pizza restaurant at 210 W. Highway 66 in Arcadia (1/2 mile east Pop’s) and will be serving Breakfast and Lunch from 6 am to 1 pm Monday through Saturday. Stop in and try these delectable treats, if you haven’t already. If you are in Edmond and in a rush, stop by Super Suppers on Danforth and Sante Fe to get your Broome’s Fried Pies in the frozen section to take home and make when it’s convenient! This grass roots business is starting to really take off, and we are very proud to say we are supporters!

He wrote a book called “Blogify Your Business – A weekly guide to your first year in business”. Tim has had numerous speaking engagements in and around the Edmond area letting businesses know that they too can get online and connect with their customers utilizing today’s popular social media outlets, and to help businesses make the most of the internet. Tim, and his wife Leann, started operating out of an office on Broadway earlier this year and are now located in their new working space at 2801 E Memorial Rd, Suite 111 Edmond, Oklahoma 73013, just west of Oklahoma Christian University. They have a permanent employee with Emily Spirek, and are very supportive of local colleges’ internship programs from UCO, Francis Tuttle and OC University. This is a terrific way for local college students to be able to learn to work and hone their skills in an everyday work environment. If you are in need of print ad design, business cards and letterhead, web design or tweaks to your existing site, give T & S Web Design a call at (405) 285-0348. They have some of the best designs out there, are extremely well respected, reliable and professional, and have the most affordable rates anywhere in the Edmond area.

THE GOLF WORKOUT Take your Golf game to the next Level with Resistance Training! BY CHRIS MARLATT With a combination of Cardio, Weights, and a good Nutritional diet your strength and endurance on the golf course is going to be off the charts. If you’re not incorporating a strength routine now, while playing golf, you could be missing out. Remember guys, if you can’t hit past the women’s tee box while teeing off you have to hit your next ball with your pants down! Golfing is all about rotation. You need to get your whole body working in sync with itself. Strengthening your legs, back, and core helps you generate the torque you need to hit the crap out of your ball.
THE WORK OUT This work out is to be done as fast and controlled as possible. Try to do all exercises one time first before you repeat your next set. By doing so, you will increase the intensity and calorie burn of your workout. Complete 23 sets of 12-15 repetitions of each exercise, and do it 2-3 times a week for the next 3 weeks. This workout can be done at home or at the gym. All you need are a set of Dumbbells, Stability ball, and a killer play list playing on your Ipod. Its time to start playing the best golf you have ever played in your life.

Summer Stolz volun beauty pagents, 13-year old
by Sherri Hultner
In the midst of the holidays coming up and with everyone cleaning out their closets and getting ready to make donations to local charities, we are reminded sometimes by the youngest members of our community that the things we possess are not always the most important thing in this life. Sometimes the most important thing to another person may just be your time. With the economy crashing last year, there are some people who were just hanging on by a thread for everyday expenses and found themselves in need of support. Sometimes the people that require this assistance just need a hand to get through until their situation betters itself. In speaking with Laurie Rottmayer, the director of the Oklahoma International Pageants, regarding a story idea in early September, she told me about Summer Stolz. Summer is 13 years old and she is in the 7th grade here in Edmond. She is a singer, dancer, actor and very busy with her school work. As well, she was crowned Miss Jr. Teen Oklahoma International on April 24th of this year. The unusual thing about her new title is that she is and will be the only Miss Jr. Teen Oklahoma International. This is an accomplishment on its own; however it’s what Summer does in her spare time that really caught our attention. While most kids in middle school are not usually thinking on a level of volunteerism at this stage of their lives, Summer is busy taking care of the needs of the smallest clients at the Infant Crisis Center. According to Summer, “My mission is to take care of the needs and issues of Oklahoma children in crisis. It’s amazing to me that 1 of 4 children go to bed hungry.” Summers 13th birthday in September was spent having lots of fun with her girlfriends, including a sleepover. The next day Summer took her friends down to the Infant Crisis Center to help volunteer. In speaking with both Summer, and her mother Karen, it seems that Summer’s long time interest in volunteering has come from her mother’s influence. Karen stated that she first realized how many organizations there were in need in Edmond and surrounding areas while working with the Edmond Chamber of Commerce. She works at Dell Computers and is continuing on with her community service, both with Summer and through Dell. According to Summer, the Infant Crisis Center provides emergency services for infants through 4 years of age. These children may receive help 4 times throughout their lifetime, which consists of food, 2 cans of infant formula, clothing, and diapers. Summer is trying to raise awareness about the Infant Crisis Center throughout the Oklahoma metro and right here in Edmond, as she has spoken to area elementary and high schools, as well as at Dell Computers, and at the Oklahoma Zoo about the services Infant Crisis offers to displaced families. She has also

organized diaper and formula drives during the local high school football season. For Summer this is not her first time volunteering either—she has been doing good in the community since she was in the 3rd grade. When I asked Summer if she would be participating in any pageants in the near future, she stated that she would be taking a few years off from the pageant circuit to spend more quality time volunteering at the Infant Crisis Center. Depending on the interests and abilities of you and your group, they could use your help in: * designing dresses * sorting donated fabric * sorting donated notions, such as buttons, lace, zippers, trim * preparing packets for seamstresses * sewing dresses and nightgowns * shopping for jeans, shoes, shirts, socks, and underwear * requesting discounts, grants, and other assistance from merchants * public relations, including media exposure and presentations to civic, church, and other groups * acquiring (by purchase or donation) extra items for distribution to the children, including toothbrushes, toothpaste, pencils, and age-appropriate books * setting up for three 2-day distributions each year (moving boxes, tables, chairs, signs, etc.) * working a 4-hour shift on one of six distribution days (This job is the best one, because volunteers get to see the children’s joyous faces and interact with the children as they “shop” for their new outfit.) * telling the “U R Special story” and raising money for them to buy the children’s clothes.

On a peaceful Monday (October 19) here in
Edmond, the silence was broken by the screams of fire trucks rushing to the scene of a structure
fire on the corner of Kelly and Covell. But this structure was unlike most in Edmond. It was
an apartment building that stood four stories
tall and covered a great expanse of land. The saving grace here was that it was still under
construction and only occupied by workers who were able to evacuate in time.
The fire reportedly started at 6:01 p.m. and
by 6:15 p.m. the northern end of the massive complex was fully engulfed. The sound of the
crackling fire was augmented by the noise of destruction it was causing. You could hear glass
breaking, metal under stress, floors and roofs
collapsing. All together it was the sound of utter devastation.
Once the blaze took hold of the complex all
the firemen could do was slow its progress. There
was no winning this battle as the fire spread at
will and with the aid of the blowing winds. One news station called it a “Firenado.
Through the night the fire ate at the structure,
devouring more than two thirds of the building by morning. The valiant firemen on hand could do nothing more than pump water on it and even
that seemed futile. By late afternoon on Tuesday
the battle was finally over. The fire won and the building was a total loss.
