CITY OF EDMOND CUTTING EDGE WITH OFFERING OF MULCH 2/15/12 As an avid gardener, one of my favorite services the City of Edmond provides it’s residents, and after living in so many different cities in California, is the recycling of residents Christmas Trees (instead of filling the landfills with them) and offering the pine mulch to Edmond residents free of charge. You can stop by Mitch Park, located on Covell Rd. starting on Feb. 15th to pick your mulch up, and take all you can haul on a first come, first serve basis. ROMANTIC EDMOND DIY PROJECT Create your own romantic ambiance at home with my version of a great project I found online! You’ll need a shallow container, whole coffee beans of your fragrance of choice (i.e. plain, vanilla, etc.), and tealight candles in unscented or your fragrance of choice. Fill the container up to it’s rim with beans and insert the candle in the center, being careful that the beans don’t touch the flame (*Yes. The beans are flammable, don’t ask how I know.). When the candle warms the beans, it creates amazing ambiance and aroma that fills your home!

EDMOND’S SUNFLOWER MARKET UPDATE In more AWESOME grocery shopping alternative news, here is a photo showing the construction progress on the all new Sunflower Market location in Edmond, at 2nd Street just east of Broadway. How convenient will it be to have a grocery store of this caliber located right in the center of Edmond?! We for one are excited at this progress and it means when the days are busy, this will be one a must stop for groceries! We’ll bring you more info on it’s opening as it comes near!

4 Keys to Building Your Business with Social Media By Jessica Miller-Merrell, author and guest columnist for Fortune.com One of the most common questions I receive when discussing social media for and business beyond the return on investment is, “How do I manage it all?” Social media is a tool to communicate and build relationships similar to email, the fax machine, or telephone. Like any communication tool, it requires training, preparation, and most important boundaries in order to be effective. • Target Your Audience. This is key in areas of marketing and sales. By being very niche and specific, you can quickly build a reputation and relationships expanding from there. In order to be effective with your time and money, you must know and understand who your target audience is. This means asking your customers questions, researching on the web, and the willingness to experiment with different websites and communities. • Engagement Not Sales. The beauty of social media is the power of the conversation and influence that happens online within the social network. Companies, individuals, and professionals must establish a sense of value within the community you wish you grow. Avoid sales messages with direct pleas until you have an established reputation and fan base. Focus on value with quick messages and resources from your blog but mostly from the websites and blogs from others. Social media and the information contained within the community is done with a pay it forward mentality. Many of these messages can be scheduled in advance using social scheduling tools like Hootsuite or Tweetdeck freeing you up to focus your efforts on building relationships. • Pick Up the Phone. And by building relationships, I mean building relations. Posing questions, having twoway conversations, and learning about the people and their personalities both online and offline. Billions of

conversations happen online every single day. While social media provides a platform for introduction, it’s important to build upon that relationship through phone calls, meetups, and coffee. It’s about them not you. Just like online, focus on creating value and by helping them, they will in turn help you. • Inserting Yourself Into Conversations. When it comes to social media, it’s a community with cultural norms and expectations that are unique to the ecosystem except online. By doing your research up front you begin to understand how relationships are built and who the key players are within the community. Focus building relationships and inserting yourself into the conversations starting with 15-25 influencers online. This includes commenting on their blogs, tweeting them directly, and sharing their content through the various online channels. Building these relationships upfront allows for creating favor in advance. And calling in those favors when you need them. Building a community on social media takes time. Like any relationship online or in person, it takes time to find commonalities, your voice, and how you fit into the ecosystem. By researching up front, creating structure and focusing your efforts, you can maximize your time building relationships to drive your business into 2012 and beyond.

It’s the Uninsured By Jeffrey Taylor, Attorney at Law

There’s a tragic epidemic facing Oklahomans. No, it isn’t some airborne bacterium, but it’s almost as deadly, if not costly. For Oklahomans, the epidemic is the rising cost of insurance rates, thanks in particular to the uninsured. In last month’s article I advised you that three things would make your 2012 great. One of my suggestions was to get insurance. My advice is to always get as much as you can afford. Unfortunately, some Oklahomans believe it’s alright to operate their businesses and their vehicles without insurance. In fact, by some surveys, Oklahoma’s vehicle insurance costs are the fourth highest in the U.S. because of the nearly 24% of uninsured drivers. That’s third behind Mississippi and New Mexico. In this race, that isn’t good. The uninsured epidemic amounts to a cost of nearly $10.8 billion dollars. For the average Oklahoman, that amounts to a cost of about $1,700 per person, per year. Compare that with states like Vermont, Ohio, and Iowa, whose insurance rates are some of the lowest in the nation. Argue what you want about those states, but the truth is, they’re paying significantly less than you or I when it comes to auto insurance. Realistically, the only way to stop the rising costs is to make sure more people have insurance. Thankfully, Oklahoma’s legislature has enacted laws mandating automobile insurance, and there are programs such as Insure Oklahoma (insureoklahoma.org) that provide health insurance to those that can’t afford it. When I meet with someone, whether they want to start a business or whether they’ve been injured in an accident, I always ask about their insurance. Most business owners offer me an embarrassed apology, with an end statement such as, “I’ve been meaning to, but...” At other times, the embarrassment isn’t because the person didn’t have enough, rather, it’s because they had too little. “Full coverage,” they say. Which, as it turns out is little more than Oklahoma’s minimum insurance requirement of $25,000 liability. If you’re planning to start a business, continue operating your business, or even operate your vehicle in 2012, you must have insurance. Here’s a general rule for your business and personal insurance needs, and a short explanation of what it is: Business Liability: at least $100,000, and more depending on your industry (construction and similar trades: at least $1,000,000)

This covers any liability you incur from your business operations. Errors & Omissions: at least $100,000, and more depending on your industry This covers any liability you incur from your business decisions, management operations, etc. Life Insurance: at least 4-5 times your annual salary, plus the same amount for your spouse This policy covers you if you die. Automobile: Liability: at least state minimums, preferably $50,000 or more This covers any liability you incur from operating your vehicle. Uninsured/underinsured motorist (UIM): at least state minimums, preferably $50,000 or more This covers you when another person has no insurance or too little insurance to cover your medical bills or damages. Medical Payments Coverage: at least $5,000, get as much as you can This covers your medical bills if you are involved in an automobile related accident, regardless of fault. Disability: at least 5 times your annual salary, but as much as you can afford, plus the same amount for your spouse. If you have any questions about insurance, you should contact an insurance agent to discuss these options. You can also check out the Oklahoma Insurance Department’s website at http://www.ok.gov/oid/, to get more information. There’s too much risk out there for you to be running around uninsured. It’s not fair to your fellow Oklahomans and those people you do business with. Go right now and get your insurance up-to-date. Jeffrey Taylor is an attorney in Oklahoma City. He lives in Edmond with his wife and 3 kids. Jeff’s focuses his law practice on advising small businesses and Oklahomans with personal injuries. PATH 5 Stars Path is a new social media app, that appears to be a combination of Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Google Plus. It isn’t very heavily populated right now and requires a lot of time to use it properly. It is beautiful in it’s design, and it seems relatively easy to use. The editor gives this app 5 stars.

VOXER Remember when Cingular had cell phones that acted as walkie talkies? This new app does just that and allows you to speak directly to another person with Voxer on their phone without using minutes or texting usage charges. Are You Ready to Run? Haley Ray (Body Language Fitness)

Two very short years ago I never would have imagined I would be able to run 26.2 miles. Two years ago was around the first time I had really considered training for my first race. My friend, Holly Hayes (whom I would soon learn to lean on for running accountability), challenged me to run the half marathon in the OKC Memorial Race. What a great experience it was to be able to set a goal and accomplish it! We ran the half marathon that spring and I began to really enjoy running long distances. With my background as a college basketball player, running long distances was definitely out of my comfort zone. Furthermore, I had a very extensive knee surgery that replaced most of my knee with artificial bone and donor cartilage and I never thought I would be able to run much again. But, anything is possible if you put your mind to it! It wasn’t long after running several half marathons that I wanted to compete at a different level; I wanted to see if I could accomplish running a full marathon! Holly and I finally made the decision around September of this year that we would run our first marathon in Las Vegas! If you’re going to run 26.2 miles, you might as well do it in Vegas, baby! I’m not an expert by any means, but maybe I can help you accomplish your goals - whether it’s running your first 5k or losing 5lbs. Here are a few things I learned along the way in training for our marathon: 1.) Set a Goal- There is no accountability in your actions if you don’t set a goal! In our case, just completing 26.2 miles was our goal starting out. Then we became more specific and set a time goal for under 4 hours and 30 minutes. We wanted to set a challenging, yet realistic goal! This kept us motivated to keep working hard to accomplish it. 2.) Seek Accountability- Find someone or something that will hold you accountable to the goal(s) you set. This could be a running partner, personal trainer, family member, or even a support group that will hold you accountable in a positive way! In my case, Holly was always there to hold me accountable and keep my thoughts and actions in check. 3.) Train Hard- What’s the point in working towards something if you’re not going to make it worth your time? Obviously there were days we didn’t want to run, days 12 edmondactive.com

we didn’t want to eat right...but we did it anyway! Why? Because we knew it would pay off in the end. Through the hot and cold, blisters and sore muscles; it didn’t matter, we had a goal in mind and we had made a decision to work hard in pursuit of it. 4.) Eat right and Take Care of Your Body- Nutrition plays a huge role in your physical fitness and ability to perform at your best level. Sometimes you learn this the hard way in seeing how your body reacts when you don’t treat it right! I learned how to eat responsibly so I could perform better. And as a great bonus, I lost 20 lbs in the process! It pays off! Also, learn to get plenty of rest! Your body needs sleep and needs to be able to handle the stress you put it through during your training. 5.) Be Balanced- In any type of training, your body needs to be challenged with a good variety of exercise. Not only did Holly and I run our booties off 3 days a week, a lot of times we were doing strength and core work 4 days a week at my women’s boot camp that I teach. Strength training is very important for running and weight loss. 6.) Have fun- Holly and I always ended up having fun whether it be through our hour -long conversations during our long runs or by making memories running our first marathon in Las Vegas! Celebrate your successes along the way! Take time to revisit where you started as well as important places in your journey to your goal– never forget to think about how far you have made it! Hopefully this helps you in your own journey to accomplish your goals for 2012 – whatever they might be! Running the marathon was definitely one of the hardest things I have ever done, but it was also one of the most rewarding things I have done. It is a great feeling of accomplishment and nobody can take that away from you! All of your hard work will pay off in the end as long as you stay committed to accomplishing your goal. Crossing the finish line will always be something I – and hopefully you – will always remember! As 2012 begins, it is time for me to set new goals, just like all of you. How does running the OKC Memorial Marathon sound? I’m getting ready to run, are you?

Field Trip

Oklahoma City Museum Of Art

There are so many cool

things to see and do right here in OKC and with all the renovation going on in

Downtown, thanks to MAPS, it’s only going to get better.

One of the feature attractions Downtown is definitely the

Oklahoma City Museum Of Art.

A serious effort is made by

the staff at OKCMOA to bring in new and exciting exhibits

from the worlds most renowned artists. We dropped by the OKCMOA for the closing night of Michael Eastman’s photography exhibit of Cuba’s

once opulent buildings, now

crumbling in disrepair, called “Faded Elegance.” And we

also were able to take in

the opening night of Dale Chihuly’s exhibit of beautiful

blown glass sculptures called “Illuminations.” The Chihuly exhibit runs from now until

April 8th and it’s definitely worth a trip Downtown to see it.

For more information about

the OKCMOA you can check their

web

site

www.okcmoa.com.

Great Date Ideas Take her racing

If you and your girl are on the competitive side you can let it out on the race track. Pole Position on May Avenue is the perfect place

for such a date. The electric karts at Pole Position are fast and the experience is thrilling to say the least. But here’s a helpful tip, let

here win. That way it will be easier to talk her in to going back for a rematch. Be fore warned, though, racing at Pole Position is very addicting...yes, it’s that much fun.

Make her dinner

If you really want to impress her and if you have skills with the grill or the stove, make her dinner. For the best steaks you will find

in town, go check out the Beef Jerky Emporium & Gourmet Foods at 810 W. Danforth next to Hobby Lobby. Not only do they have over 50 types of Beef Jerky, they also carry spices, rubs, hot sauces, 2-inch thick, Dry Rubbed Steaks that will literally melt in your mouth. Stop in to see what’s new or to create your own custom Valentine’s Day basket!

If you are skill-less in the kitchen, all is not lost. Go see Millie at Millies Table in the Homestead Shopping Center on the corner of

Danforth and Santa Fe, next to Buffalo Wild Wings. She can help you out with meals that you can take home and put together, like you cooked it yourself.

Paint her a picture

Paint Your Art Out at 100 N. Broadway 405-513-5333 to register or www.PaintYourArtOut.com

One fantastic way to spend some fun, quality time with your Valentine is to try an artist led session at Paint Your Art Out. Bring in

a bottle of wine or refreshment of choice and settle it to find your inner artists. One of our favorite spots!
