Spring Brings Change By Sherri Hultner In my 40 years on this planet, I have never been more excited to see a season roll in than I am about this Spring. It’s roaring in and with it is enormous change all around us. Edmond is becoming home to some really fantastic new eateries like Vin Dolce Wine Bar, Coolgreens, Homerun Sliders as featured in this month’s Metro Food & Drink, Cafe Evoke and more! With these new establishments coming to our town, it gives us all the opportunity to stay in Edmond and enjoy the things we normally had to trek to OKC to experience, and that is an amazing thing for our town. While the town is growing in leaps and bounds right now, so is Edmond Active Magazine Online. It’s been all I could do to keep up, but now am finishing up what I have started on our new website to bring to you a complete city guide meant to help all of Edmond’s new residents get around that much easier. It will be constantly changing, which is the way we like things around here! Another new social media addition is the EdmondActive Pinterest Page which will be evolving throughout this month and will finally give a home to all of the Shop Edmond photos we take every month for our advertisers!!! You’ll be able to pin our content from the new website at EdmondActive.com, rate local businesses and much more! Visit often to see in real time what we have planned and we welcome any suggestions you may have! Keeping up with new trends can be time consuming but it’s oh so much fun for me. Be sure to check the 2012 Trends pages to see some of the newest spring accessories you can add to your existing winter weekend wardrobe that are amazingly affordable, super cute and available right now. Be sure to check in next 04 edmondactive.com

month for a look at some of the most exciting spring fashions, home decor & more that these amazing local shops have in store for us for late spring and summer. For March, we decided to bring you some fun with a feature on the hottest trend right now ... Longboarding. And for our two wheeled readers, a feature on the Endurocross event that was held in Guthrie! We hope you enjoy this issue, and will follow us at Facebook, Twitter & Pinterest for daily & weekly happenings @EdmondActive, where we post events, advertiser specials & more. If you are new to town, keep your eye out for upcoming events, as things start to heat up in April! Have a wonderful March, and thanks so much for supporting our locally owned, independent magazine!

4 Keys to Building Your Business with Social Media By Jessica Miller-Merrell, author and guest columnist for Fortune.com Whether you are a student at UCO that is a soon to be

graduate entering the workforce for the first time, a part

time worker, or an experienced worker who is exploring their options in the job market, the job search can be a mystery. Most job seekers do not realize the unwritten rules, nuances, and mystery that surrounds the job search.

For most companies over 500 employees, the hiring

process is managed by a human resource manager or

not a pdf. These are not easily scanned or read by the ATS.

You could be overlooked because your resume is not easily read for the hiring software.

7. Clean up your social networking profiles. A growing

percentage of companies are Googling candidates during the hiring process. Post content on your profile that paints you in a good light and remove embarrassing photos.

8. Get on LinkedIn. LinkedIn.com is the professional

recruiter. They serve as a project manager screening for

In order to put your best foot forward and gain the

attention of that hiring manager, consider the following before sending a single application:

1. Apply for a job in which you are qualified. Of the

There Is Always Something More Important By Jeffrey Taylor, Attorney at Law Madoff. Enron. Ponzi. What emotions, sympathies, or frustrations do these words conjure up in your mind? For me, they’re simply examples of greed, excess, and selfishness. They’re the endgame of good people who do bad things. Jeffrey Taylor is an attorney whose family is the most important thing in his life.

Early in my college education I had the opportunity to receive instruction from a learned and wise professor. The class, ironically, was business law and ethics. Although the majority of the semester we focused on the legal issues facing businesses, the final day of the semester became the professor’s “soap box” day. I can’t tell you anything the professor said during this 50 minute lecture except for this one guiding principal: you must find something in your life that is more important than money, your job, or public accolades, which you must hold sacred and dear, otherwise you will fail despite all other success. This professor noted that this sacred and cherished thing must be something you would never compromise for, will always find more important, and cannot be related to money, job, or accolades. That sage advice remains with me through today. Far too often, souls get separated from themselves because they forget the core principles. I am certain that businesses and edmondactive.com 07

Picnic Bench Chiller Are you always trying to find a container to chill drinks in for your outdoor gatherings or celebrations? We modified our picnic bench with a copper planter that we found at Lowes for $34.95. The hardest part was cutting the hole in the center of the table top. A jigsaw seemed to be the best tool for the job. Once the hole was cut, we just dropped the planter in and secured it with wood screws around the top. That’s all there is to it. Add a couple of bags of ice & your favorite beverages ... and enjoy! Remember, we can’t be held responsible for any injuries out there, if you attempt this project & be sure to wear safety equipment and watch your fingers when you’re attempting this project!

Lazy-E Endurocross

20 edmondactive.com

The Lazy-E Arena, in Guthrie, plays host to a dizzying number of dirt sports throughout the year. There’s Rodeo, Horse Shows, Roping, Monster Trucks, BMX, Arenacross and Endurocross. If it done in the dirt, chances are it’s done at the Lazy-E. My good buddy, Brett Cue (pictured top right), invited me out to the Endurocross recently. He was there to perform in the jumping exhibition and to race the event. While Brett is an accomplished motocross racer, and dirtbike jumper, this was his first venture into Endurocross. For the uninitiated Endurocross is a man-made off-road course in an arena setting. The course contains boulders, logs, sand, concrete pipes and tractor tires. Being a motocrosser, Brett attacked the course as a motocrosser would--fast and with little regard for the obstacles in front of him. His tactics served him well during practice, but come race time, it was a whole different story. For the start of his heat race, Brett got a good jump off the gate and led the pack to their first challenge--a large mountain of dirt with two big logs stacked at the bottom. Brett didn’t back off. He was going to show everyone how it’s done. He hit those logs hard enough that it sent his rear wheel off in a race with his front wheel to the top of the hill. The rear wheel won. Brett did a slow motion frontflip and landed on his head. The crash resulted in a broken collar bone and a trip to the ER. But that’s par for the course for my buddy Brett. It was the 6th time he’d broken that particular collar bone. To a motocrosser a broken collar bone isn’t much of an injury. About 98% of the racers I know have broken theirs at least once. But I have to admit that Brett broke his in style.

It’s All Downhill Longboarding By Jeff Hultner

Longboarding is a fast growing form

of skateboarding in which top speed is

the ultimate goal. Longboarding evolved

alongside skateboarding being the main form of transportation to the beach for surfers in the fifties and sixties. In many ways, longboarding

is similar to surfing, the main reason being is that it provides a much smoother ride than

conventional skateboards. This, for many people, is the reason longboarding is so appealing.

Downhill longboarding is a style of

longboarding

only

for

the

courageous

rider. Speeds of 35 - 40 miles per hour are commonplace in this extreme form of the

sport. To stay stable at speeds like these, the best equipment must be implemented. However, this runs a very high price. A good

quality downhill board can often go for $450 or more.

A more affordable variety of the sport

is freeriding or even downhill freeriding.

Freeriding is the fun, ligthearted, and relaxing

style that is appealing to the masses. The possibilities for it are endless. One of the most fun aspects of this style is sliding. Freeride

boards are usually designed in a manner that

allows the rider to easily slide across the pavement.

The sport has blown up very fast locally.

There are many spots to skate in and around

the metropolitan area. There are a few groups of serious longboarders, such as the OKC longboard crew and the SLC in stillwater, who frequent these spots and help advance the small local scene that is rapidly growing.
