Walker Ave. The ballet is based on “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” a classic children’s novel by author L. Frank Baum which has become one of the best-known stories in American popular culture. The story chronicles the adventures of a young girl named Dorothy Gale in the Land of Oz, after being swept away from her Kansas farm home in a storm. “We wanted to conclude this milestone season with an exciting, colorful production that people would want to experience with their children,” Executive Director John Krasno said. “With so many people requesting we bring the yellow brick road back for an encore performance, we felt strongly that this was a fun way to thank the city for their ongoing support.” Performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. on Friday, April 20 and Saturday, April 21, and 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 22. The production will feature live orchestral music by The Oklahoma City Philharmonic, and flying effects and a three-dimensional tornado provided by Las Vegas-based ZFX Flying Effects. How to Spruce Up Your Leather Couch By Sherri Hultner

How to Update Your Thermostat By Chris Hultner

One of the easiest and most cost effective

upgrades you make to your house is relacing your old thermostat with a new programmable unit.

This is especially relevant for people with homes older than 10 years. We bought a programmable thermostat at Lowes for $29.95 and it only took 15 minutes to install. Great way to save for the summertime, we already see a difference!

Once you have the power turned off you can remove your pld thermostat from the wall. Then disconnect the wires and lable them by the corrosponding letter by the screw.

Now you’re ready to install the baseplate with the supplied hardware, a couple of screws.

You will find the labels in the packaging for the new thermostat. It’s important that you label the wires correctly.

Next, slide the wires into their corrosponding lettered hole and screw them down.

Now you’re ready to snap on the faceplate and turn the power back on. That’s all there is to it. edmondactive.com 11

Designing Your Flowerbeds:

The Professional Process Made Easy By Heather Parrott

You notice your neighbors’ lawns and gardens, you may notice some flowerbeds look more cohesive than others. The biggest difference that I see, as a professional, are the properties that started with a design and those that had plants randomly bought and planted each year. The well-designed landscapes have plants that look healthy; they have varied heights and textures and a timed seasonal blooming schedule. This combination is a winning formula every time. When I first step out of my truck for a new client’s design consultation, I start evaluating the property. The first thing that comes to mind is the direction the house sits, how dense the neighborhood is and what existing elements are thriving. All of these factors go into the plant selection process. The direction the house sits speaks to sun exposure with

in the areas already. By using plants that have similar needs to the ones that are healthy and thriving in the beds already you have means a greater chance of success. Once you have an understanding of the group of plants that you need to work with to have a healthy garden, adding varied height and texture is next. Consider both evergreen and deciduous trees and shrubs. By having a combination of both, you can develop texture and height to what is considered the backbone to your design. Repeating and/or grouping these elements help with design and symmetry. As you see in the pictures of the final design, I choose to repeat three or four of the same bush under a window. I then framed the outside of the window with two repeating elements. This not only plays to the flow of the design, but also to the architecture of the home. WHEN DESIGNING YOUR BEDS, THINK OF COST.

north and east being shady positions and west and south being high-sun exposure areas. With that in mind, you can combine the beds with some shade and some sun. In this part of Oklahoma, all shade plants and part-shade plants are to be planted in areas that only receive morning light to about noon each day because of the extreme heat that we experience here in the summer months. If your beds get sun exposure in the afternoon, then it’s best to go with full sun plants. The second thing that comes into play is wind exposure. The denseness of your neighborhood often determines how windy your beds are. The plants selected on the south side of a property should also be able to tolerate wind exposure. Lastly, I like to consider what elements are doing well

One cost efficient way to plant is to use perennials in a timed seasonal blooming pattern. The cost of planting annuals biyearly can get expensive and planting them can be time consuming. So I often opt for perennial heavy beds to save money for my clients in the long run. Most tags on the plant will tell you what time of year that species blooms, so it would be easy to plant three early-spring blooming perennials and, later, three late-spring blooming perennials. Repeat this same planting pattern with early summer and late summer perennials. Simply by planting a selection of blooming perennials, your garden can have a showstopper almost all year long. By knowing your property, varying the type of plants

you put in and choosing perennials that bloom at certain times, designing your own beds can be easier than ever. Armed with this information and a little research on your own, I hope this year inspires you. Feel confident that the work you put into your garden will not only pay off in beauty, but will make your neighbors take a second glance at your lawn and gardens!

Dallas Blooms Once A Year By Sherri Hultner

If you are new to the area, the Dallas Arboreteum is 3 1/2 hours south of Edmond and on the list of the Top 14 Places in the World to See Spring Flowers according to MSN. This year the blooms of 500,000 spring bulbs, including daffodils, tulips, Dutch Iris and hyacinth made an amazing showing. Along with these amazing once a season treats, were the blooms of 6,000 azaleas, 100,000 pansies, violas, poppies and other springtime annuals and perrenials. If you didn’t make it in time for their 28th annual explosion of color, plan a visit anyway for April or May, as it is always an amazing place to step away from daily living and enjoy some time outdoors! Be sure to mark you calendar for next year, though, as this is one of the most beautiful spots in our area during March!!!
