Welcome to the Oct./Nov. Issue of Edmond Active! I will be trying some new things with the magazine over the next few months to make it more fun for our readers! You all have come to know our blog Around Edmond at EdmondActive.com and so I thought I’d make this column a little more like our blog. In our blog we always highlight community events and pass along information given to us by readers and businesses, alike. So I have decided to take the print calendar out of our magazine, and highlight events here instead! If you’d still like a full and complete community calendar, you can find it at the site, and you can always submit your events online at no charge! It’s not a party unless everyone is invited and this always makes for terrific community collaboration. Local Edmond Halloween events will start off for residents with the Arcadia Storybook Forest from 10/23 to 10/30 and from 5:30 to 8:30 each evening. If you have little ones, this event is always a favorite and just a little less spooky for little people. On Friday and Saturday, 10/25 & 10/26, at Gracelawn Cemetary is the 1st annual Historic Ghost Tours. You can get more information on this event, which is $7 per person at our events calendar or by purchasing tickets from Silver Leaf Gems at 19 N Broadway in Downton Edmond. Speaking of Downton Edmond, the annual Trick or Treat on the Street event has been relocated as we reported in our online blog Around Edmond at the beginning of October. According to Mary Edwards, president of DEBA, the event has been relocated due to the construction going on at the new Public Safety Center. It will the same as far as all of the fun events they have always offered, it’ll happen on Halloween night from 5:00 to 6:30 pm in the Farmer’s Market area in the Festival Marketplace in Downton Edmond! Another Halloween Night event that is a first time event will be the Spring Creek Candy Rock Block Party. It will include trick or treating at all of the Spring Creek shops, music, inflatables and a talent show for kids! It happens Thursday 10/31 at 15th & Bryant and from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. Open Houses are coming to local boutiques Serendipity Market, 2 Doors Down Furniture Consignment and to Emory Anne Interiors! Serendipity Market’s open house will host their event November 2, with refreshments, gift certificate giveaways & more! It’s also their anniversary, so be sure to stop by, take a look around and say hi! Serendipity Market is located at 917 E Danforth! 2 Doors Down & Emory Anne Interiors will host their open houses on Thursday November 7 from 4 to 8 pm and will have cocktails & refreshments to thank all of you for your business and highlight what’s new in store for the holidays! All of these boutiques are amazing and I highly suggest marking your calendars! Enjoy this issue as it’s thene is about faith and family and the miracles that come with both!

The Spring Creek Community would like to invite you to the Candy Rock Block Party on Halloween Night. This is a family friendly event with Music, Inflatables, and Trick Or Treating . Local Businesses will be opening their doors as Candy Stops for kids 12 and under. There will be stages at multiple locations hosting kids & family Bands, and a talent show of Edmond kids. Time: 5:00pm – 8:00pm Price: Free Location: Spring Creek shopping centers – 15th & Bryant Extra Info: www.springcreekblockparty.com If your child would like to perform on our Edmond Kids Got Talent stage then you can contact Terry Cuthbertson at 405-341-5200. Spots are limited, so please contact us as soon as possible.

A few more upcoming events around Edmond and in the metro are the Howloween Adoption Event held at the Edmond Animal Shelter on Friday Oct. 25, from 10 am to 10 pm. The fun for kids starts at 4 pm while adoptions will go all day. Great event, and a great chance to adopt a pet! This month we were surprised with an amazing hand blown glass pumpkin from the amazing owner’s of Italian Jim’s and Bella Forte Glass Studio. They wanted to give us something to make us smile and for all that we do in the community. This was one of the nicest things we’ve had happen and we are completely humbled by their generosity. If you’ll stop by the Myriad Gardens during their Pumpkinville event, you’ll have a chance to pick up one of these amazing pumpkins that are for sale! Gorgeous pieces and worth taking a look at! Moving on into November, we will have more and more events including the December Christmas events listed on our online calendar! We did receive this listing for the Santa Market held in Downtown Edmond and which is Edmond’s largest craft show! There will be so many talented crafters at this even on November 23 from 9 to 5 pm in the Edmond Community Center that you won’t want to miss it! And the proceeds will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association which is a great organization! Please come by our website and like our Facebook Fanpage to keep up with new events and daily inspiration from our advertisers! Have an amazing month, enjoy the changing colors around town, enjoy time with family and friends, and we’ll see you around Edmond!

Homecoming

Edmond sure does love parades and this month we got three of them thank to all three schools having Homecoming. Next up on the parade schedule is the annual Christmas Parade. See you there.

THE GREAT PUMPKINS Definitely the best place to stock up on all your Halloween and Fall decorations is Sheldon’s, on Broadway. For more than 20 years Sheldon’s has been a staple for seasonal goods like pumpkins, Christmas Trees or Spring plants. This season is no different as they have the widest selection and variety of pumpkins and gourds anywhere in the Edmond area.

My Home

Cozy Up

There isn’t anything I love more than a cozy place to curl up when the weather starts to turn cool. When I was out visiting with local boutiques, I stopped by Emory Anne Interiors for a little holiday home inspiration. My favorite line that Anne McCarthy has brought to Edmond is the Company C brand. It’s high fashion, extremely detailed and amazingly cozy to the eye - and comfortable, too! This particular couch and accessories just stood out to me and I wanted to share with all of you. Emory Anne Interiors has anything and everything you could want or need for entertaining at your tailgate parties or holiday get togethers, highly unique home and personal accessories and art, and a few of the most unique furniture lines in Edmond. As well, if you’re in need of design services, this is also available! Located on 33rd Street between Kelly & Santa Fe and open from 10-6 pm Mon. - Sat. Don’t forget the Holiday Open House on Nov. 7 between 4-8 pm for a chance to see what’s new for the holidays!

My Yard

Gardening Through Fall And Into Winter

By Heather Popowsky

Have you felt it?! Only days ago the first cool breeze of autumn was upon us. This is my most favored time of year for many reasons, but most of all the benefits fall gardening is seen for the year to come. From pre-emerging turf to planting trees and bushes, the reward in the spring is exponential. October Pumpkins, pansies, tulips oh my! Along with changing out spring/summer annuals, decorating outdoors for each seasons’ festivities is a much deserved task in itself. Personally I do all of my fall decorating in September to be able to appreciate my work because by Thanksgiving I am well into winter and holiday mode. October Tips & To Do List

Over seed fescue and cool season turf grasses! This is the best time of year to start a cool season lawn or to beef up your current one. Be mindful of runoff areas when laying seed down. My go to seed runoff barrier is hay or straw especially where there are patches of bare dirt. Plant your spring blooming bulb plants now. Here is central Oklahoma the most common are tulip, which are an annual here, but let’s not forget about hyacinths and daffodils that are both perennials. Pre-emerging warm-season turf is most beneficial now. Just remember to avoid all the areas of your lawn that are getting over-seeded. Professionally I do not recommend over seeding warm season turf with a cool season turf because it is so

unhealthy for the lawn. November As each cooler day greets Oklahoma, so comes the coloration and defoliation of the trees. November is such a truly colorful and beautiful time of year. Fortunately raking of the leaves seems kinder when outdoor temps for such activities are in the 50s and 60s. As the trees around you defoliate I would encourage each homeowner to shred and mulch down beds with them or return them to your compost pile. If you don’t own a leaf shredder, your lawn mower is helpful in this effort. This is the time to fertilizer cool season turf and to continue with cool season turf maintenance like mowing and leaf

My Yard removal. Fall is a great time of year to plant trees and bushes because instead of the newly transplanted item entering a growing season and instead it’s planted during dormant season of rest. Remember holes should be twice as wide and only slightly deeper than the container holding the plant. As the growing season comes to an end, maintaining equipment is a good idea. Like winterizing a boat all good garden tools should be cleaned, free of gas, and oiled if necessary. December Holiday season has arrived in full swing. along with all its trimmings. Remember to be kind to trees and bushes while adorning them with decorations. Winter is considered a season of drought here in Oklahoma generally speaking. So irrigating the turf and beds on days over 55 degrees for at least 24 hours is a good idea. This is a good time to review this year’

successes and failures and notate them. This season was an exceptional one with the rain and temps being so favorable. “There is no gardening without humility. Nature is constantly sending even its oldest scholars to the bottom of the class for some egregious blunder.” Alfred Austin The advice above has been accumulated from my education in the field of horticulture to the almost decade of owning a landscaping business in the state of Oklahoma. Due to space and the purpose of this article I couldn’t elaborate on all the tips I gave and couldn’t fit all the advice I have for each month. So I encourage you to find me on facebook under Neighborhood Gardener or on Twitter @gardenchica for questions about this article and further information on monthly tips and to do lists items. I have greatly enjoyed the last 12 months here. See you all next year!

The Quest For Baby

Stella By Sherri Hultner

Like a lot of couples out there, Paulo and Patty Paes wanted to start their family and have a baby, but after multiple attempts to get pregnant failed they started looking to doctors for help. But even after meny different therapies their journey for a child was fruitless. On the verge of throwing in the towel, they went on vacation to Brazil and that changed everything. Here is the story of their quest for baby Stella. What were your obstacles on your journey to having Stella? Patty: I had something called PCOS. It’s no big deal; I was told I had to take a pill to help me ovulate. I already knew I had that so I said ok let’s just address it. I went to the regular doctor here and she put me on Metformin, which is the same medication people take when they are insulin resistant when they have diabetes and then the pills to ovulate, in combination. The important part is that I got pregnant but miscarried. And then for 5 years I couldn’t get pregnant again. So we went to the specialist and did the IUI’s, which are the artificial insemination treatments, and we did two invitro treatments. And after no results, my mom asked us to come down to Brazil to meet with some doctors and see what they have to say. Paulo and I said no, because how could we manage going to Brazil with our work schedules. Paulo: When we finished with the invitro’s here and they didn’t work, we said ok we are done, no more. We went to Brazil on vacation, and the day we got there my mother in law had a doctor appointment made for us.

Patty: My mom never gave up. She told the story to some of her friends and she thought let’s see… and her friends all told her they knew of doctors, and she decided I’m not going to go looking for anybody, lets see who comes to me. Everybody had someone to recommend but only one person had the name of the doctor we ended up seeing. Specifically because my cousin went to him and it worked. On December 26th we went to see this doctor after my mom had given him all of our medical history. After he had reviewed it, he sat down with us and explained that we didn’t need invitro fertilization. We asked the doctor if we needed to go through a lot of exams, like invitro in America, and he said no, not at all and asked us if we had ever done the cross match. Paulo: We had never heard of it and that was odd because an American scientist had developed this test. Nobody performs this test here and if you ask any doctor here they won’t give any credit to the test. It’s big in Brazil, Spain, Japan and Israel. Patty: So what this test is - it is a cross of our blood to see if we are compatible and not in the way of positive or negative blood types. My body rejects Paulo’s body like the flu. So, for us, it didn’t matter if we were trying to conceive naturally or by invitro, every pregnancy would always end up in a miscarriage. The way to fix this issue is that I had to be vaccinated, just like with a flu shot. They drew blood from Paulo and created a vaccine that I had to take as shots 6 times every 3 weeks They were really no big deal, really just like an allergy shot. Since I couldn’t bring the vaccine back into the US, Paulo had to go to Brazil

to create the vaccine, and then I had to go back every 3 to 6 weeks. I was really thankful to my job, even though I used my sick time; they allowed me to go on my schedule. Sometimes I would stay a week, sometimes I would only be gone for 3 days and sometimes I would just go to have the shot and then come right back. Paulo: We did this for about a year and Patty didn’t get pregnant. We went back in November and did the cross match again and the doctor said it looked better but he wanted to do it again. So in December Patty took another shot which was one of 6 shots every three to six weeks and every 6 months we did a booster shot. In April we went down to Brazil again, and the doctor told Patty he wanted to do an x-ray of her uterine wall. After having the last miscarriage, the doctor here did a DNC. When she cleaned it up, it had been damaged. So our doctor in Brazil took a tool and scratched the wall as if to “wake it up”. We were told to wait a couple of months to try to get pregnant. In May we decided to relax and we went to Las Vegas and by the end of May, Patty was pregnant with Stella. This is an amazing story. Did you have any problems with your pregnancy? Patty: Absolutely no problems at all, it was wonderful! Let’s talk about the role faith played in this journey. Patty: YES! Faith played a very big role in this for both of us. Will you do this again? Patty: We will, after we get some rest (laughs). When we are ready, we’ll go down and have more vaccine made and start the process over.

Field Trip

26 Hours In The Family Truckster By Jeff Taylor

Thirteen hours in a car doesn’t sound like much of a picnic. Now double it, and that’s what my family calls “The Great Adventure 2013.” I grew up “on the road,” and I’m sure you did too. My parents would cram our family of seven into the Ford Grenada and hit the road for many wacky adventures remind me to tell you about the time my twin filled our shoes with vomit. Oh yeah, good times. As we grew older, the Grenada gave way (literally, the rear axle fell off) to a Ford Aerostar, and our adventures grew longer. We’d make our way as a family from California to Nevada to Utah to Oregon, and every byway in between. Love it or hate it, my parents taught me to enjoy the open road. And that tradition has carried forward with my young family. This year, like last, we decided to “extend” our annual trek west to family, by “visiting some sights” and “road tripping.” So, we put our family in the car and headed north to Mount Rushmore, west to Deadwood, South Dakota, Cody, Wyoming, and Yellowstone National Park, eventually finishing the journey in Salt Lake City. Now some people are hesitant to travel long distances with children simply because children are children. Our three kids are no different. That’s why it’s vitally important that you make the trip fun and as easy as you can. First, the video entertainment system in our van helps . . . a lot. My kids are spoiled when it comes to long, boring stretches of road, because they just watch a movie. When I was young, I actually had to watch

the road. I’m sure you did too. Second, it’s important to do fun things along the way. Sure, getting there is always nice, but my biggest regret about some of my childhood trips was not stopping at all of the cool spots along the road. And not just the museums and gas stations. One of the spots we stopped at was this neat little attraction called Carhenge, in Nebraska (http://www.carhenge.com/). It’s weird, it’s wacky, and the kids loved it. We even got to stop at WalMart in Hays, Kansas to change a tire. Not fun, and I’m still slapping my head at my stupidity, but we piled out of the car in pajamas and let the kids run wild. Good times because nobody knows who you are. If you’re not a bonehead like me, road trips can be cheap. Well, at least comparatively. We don’t eat out, except on a few occasions, and we pack a ton of healthy and unhealthy snacks. I’ve found I can stay alert and focused by eating crunchy foods, so carrots, celery, and Corn Nuts®. Purchasing these foods at the grocery store, versus a fast food restaurant or gas station. MOUNT RUSHMORE If you haven’t been to this historic landmark, plan a trip. Edmond to Mount Rushmore is 13 hours, give or take. Despite some relatively boring stretches along the way, the drive is actually quite easy and enjoyable. We found a decent and relatively inexpensive motel in Custer, which is about 30 minutes away from Mount Rushmore’s gates.

Obviously, the closer you are to the park, the pricier hotels become. So, if you’re going to one of these popular places, shop around. Use the popular internet hotel sites to find a room, and the reviews certainly help make sure you’re getting a good deal. We probably paid more of a premium price, given the fact we were travelling at a peak time of year. Also, look for hotels that have a continental breakfast. We filled our bellies before heading out, which helped save some money on the road. We arrived in Keystone about 7:30 pm on July, 6, and went directly to Mount Rushmore. There’s no entrance fee to the National Memorial, but you will pay about $6.00 to park. The parking pass is good for one year, just in case you know someone who’s going. Get to the park in the evening because they have a special ceremony telling all about the creation of the monument, and then they light it. That’s a memorable moment. Do bring a jacket, and maybe an umbrella. We missed part of the ceremony standing in the gift shop, because our shorts and t-shirts didn’t survive the torrential downpour. We took our obligatory evening pictures and returned to the hotel for sleep. Rushmore opens at 8:00, and I’d suggest that you get there early to get some great pictures of the monument without the crowds. We hobbled back in at about 9:00, and took some great snapshots in front of the monument. DEADWOOD, SOUTH DAKOTA We skipped the touristy town of Keystone (at the base of Rushmore),

22 edmondactive.com

Field Trip because we wanted to explore Deadwood. Deadwood is a “wild west” town made famous by Wyatt Earp, Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane, among others. Each day actors recreate scenes from Deadwood’s storied past, including the shooting of Wild Bill Hickok as he played poker. We were able to catch a street gunfight reenactment in front of the old hotel. If you stay late enough, you can purchase tickets to see the trial of Jack McCall, the man who killed Wild Bill. Our kids loved Deadwood, even though we only spent a few hours there. CODY AND YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK We spent our second night in a dated but nice motel in Cody, Wyoming. If you don’t mind a little drive, you can save some significant money by staying in Cody, as opposed to some hotels closer to Yellowstone. Cody’s claim to fame comes because of its namesake, Buffalo Bill Cody. This quaint town is about 50 miles from Yellowstone’s entrance, so we opted for a night’s rest. Unfortunately, we didn’t take advantage of too many activities in Cody, but if you want to see the Cody Stampede - the longest-running professional rodeo - it’s well worth some extra time. You can also visit the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, the Buffalo Bill Dam Visitor Center, or Old Trail Town. We left Cody bright and early on July 7 to get to Old Faithful Geyser, which is about two hours from Cody. Entrance fees to Yellowstone are

reasonable. We purchased the America the Beautiful national park pass ($80) last July that gets you into all National Parks for free. If you’re visiting, or expect to visit, a number of different parks, the pass is well worth the cost. Check out the National Park Service’s website for more information: http://www.nps.gov/ findapark/passes.htm. Be aware that the speed limit inside the park is 35 miles per hour. It’s slow. Getting from one part of the park to another part of the park takes a long time, and even though your site is 20 or 30 miles away, prepare for a 50-60 minute drive. Plan your trip accordingly. We drove extra loops because we failed to look at the map and make strategic choices based on where we wanted to go and what we wanted to see. That’s not all too bad though, because you often see wildlife roaming through the park. We saw plenty of bison, elk, deer, and other animals - sadly, we didn’t see a bear. Sometimes, the animals will be so close you can reach out and touch them. Don’t. It’s dangerous and illegal to touch the wildlife. Old Faithful and the numerous other sites inside Yellowstone are well worth the experience. Here’s a tip: if you don’t mind waiting around for a bit, grab a bench seat at the front and slide to the edge of the viewing platform when the geyser erupts. You’ll have an unobstructed view. Great for pictures. Since we opted for two days at Yellowstone, we stayed our second night in West Yellowstone, Montana. Very cool cowboy town, conveniently located near

the west entrance to the park. There are a number of family-friendly activities in and around West Yellowstone, and I suggest you check out destinationyellowstone. com for more details. THE END OF THE JOURNEY After our two days in Yellowstone, we trekked onward through Jackson Hole and Idaho Falls, on to Salt Lake City, and back to Edmond. If you’re still counting - or even started - that’s eleven states in 7 days. Over 3,000 miles of travelling. In a car. And we survived. Sure, our kids got grumpy, tired, bored, hungry, angry, vengeful, in timeout, “I have to go to the bathroom” right after we just stopped . . . but they loved it. They want to go back, do more, see more, enjoy more. What a wonderful experience. We talked. We screamed. We laughed. We cried. We bonded. We learned that we can be together and enjoy each other. We even announced our newest arrival. If I have any one regret about The Great Adventure, I’d say that we neglected to get more pictures and videos from the kids. We own two small digital cameras and we didn’t let the kids make their own video and photographic memories. We didn’t let them capture their moments in the car, at the sites, in the motels. Regrets? None. Memories? Many. Jeff Taylor is an attorney in Oklahoma City. He and his family live in Edmond. Jeff loves road trips, even with whiney kids. Judy Werber’s Girls Continue to Fight Against Ovarian & Breast Cancer By Sherri Hultner

In January of 2012, our Local Hero was a beautiful and energetic woman named Judy Werber, who 5 months prior was an unlikely candidate for ovarian cancer. As a family, on November 9, 2011, the Werber sisters, Stacey Werber Holden and Wendy Werber Shepherd discovered, after their mother Judy’s routine gallbladder surgery, that she had terminal ovarian cancer. No warning at all. On November 28, after one treatment, she passed away. We followed the Werber sisters over the last 2 years, through immediate testing, reconstructive surgeries and the change that comes from losing a loved one so very suddenly. Grief is expected, but what the Werber sisters had going for them was Judy’s legacy. They spent the first 6 months after their mom’s passing researching and then researching some more, asking what seems to be a million questions and talking to as many experts as possible to find out if they, too, had any chance of having the same result as their mom. The answers were not what they had hoped for when they both tested positive for the gene BRCA 1, which is the genetic link to ovarian cancer. And not only ovarian cancer, this gene links to an 87% chance of breast cancer. According to Wendy, “BRCA 1 gives us 87% chance of breast cancer (with our mutation it is deeper penetrated so harder to detect and spreads rapidly) and 50% chance of ovarian cancer.” In early 2011, both Stacey and Wendy, both in their early 30’s, underwent hysterectomies and since have both undergone mastectomies. In 2012 they both underwent two mammograms, one breast MRI and one ultrasound, and according to doctors, they still have 47% chance of breast cancer since their surgeries. As well, they have had auricular fine needle aspirations at OU last month. Dr. Dooley is one of about 10 doctors across the country doing the procedure. This test assesses the 3-5 year shortterm risk of breast cancer. Wendy underwent a hysterectomy in July of 2011 and then in November 2012, she went in for immediate reconstructive surgery having a Prophylactic Bilateral mastectomy performed. In July of 2013 she underwent a reconstruction/revision of her 2012 mastectomy. According to Stacey, “I had my hysterectomy/oophetecyomy in March 2011. That brought on a few struggles in itself. It throws you into instant menopause. Many sleepless and sweaty nights. I did the best I could to fight some of the moodiness that comes

with that and remained positive. I sought out natural remedies to counteract some of the symptoms. I struggled with some ideas of what a double mastectomy would look like so I put that on the back burner for awhile since I had reduced some of my breast cancer risk with the previous surgery. I wasn’t sure what Obamacare would consist of so, after much thought and consideration, I scheduled my double mastectomy with a doctor that my sister had found after tedious research. After all, I wanted the best. The best at removing breast tissue and the best at putting me back together again. I had a double mastectomy in April of 2013. I was not a good candidate for direct to implant so I had to wear tissue expanders for 7 months. I’m not going to lie. Those were uncomfortable. They feel like hard rocks. I spent months of traveling back and forth to San Antonio for the fills. That has to be done over a period of time to make sure tissue does not die. I had a fairly easy time with the exception of an infection that we kept at bay with constant antibiotics. On August 27, 2013 my day arrived. I got to have my surgery to exchange those rocks for implants. I now have beautiful breasts that you would never know had been through so much trauma. When I came home my 3 year old said “mommy, did you get some new boobies”? One day he will understand exactly why mommy did that. For now, my older two children fully understand. My children all have a 50/50 chance of inheriting the BRCA gene mutation. When they are of age (between 18-21) we will have them tested so that we will know how to best handle their situation. I pray for a better understanding of this gene and a cure for cancer. Nobody should ever have to endure this kind of loss. For now, this is all behind us and we will live what we hope is a healthy life. I know in my heart I did what I had to do to be around for my family. After following both of these amazing women, over the last two years, they are a testament to the phrase “Knowledge is power.” Each of them has coped with their grief differently, but both share the same fervent journey to make sure that they each survive for their family’s sakes. They have been running different 5K events in Judy’s honor and would eventually like to start a foundation for education on ovarian cancer in her name. Each of them has come through the last two years with superb grace, and the ability to share their story and inform other women of this silent killer.

Edmond Art

BOULEVART

We pass them every day as we go about our business, without giving

them much thought, but consciously or unconsciously they brighten our drive even if just a little. The artworks that dot our roadways bring character to our city and beauty to our streets. Randel Shadid is the man responsible for bringing art to the streets of Edmond through his Art In Public Places program. All the sculptures you see around the city, 160 of them in total, are the result of a partnership between the city and private donors. Each year the city sets aside about $2000,000 dollars for the Art in Public Places program. The Visual Arts Commission, headed by Shadid, finds the artworks, and a private donor, and the cost is split 50/50 between the donor and the city. The results of their efforts can be seen throughout downtown Edmond and the surrounding streets.
