AROUND EDMOND Welcome to back to Around Edmond! This month marks the last weeks of summer and what a beautiful summer it’s been. We found ourselves selling our home twice this summer and have just relocated within Edmond. After a month, we are finally getting settled in and are ready for a busy fall. Most of you have sent your kids back to school and are just getting back to your schedules, and are ready to start preparing for fall, football and fun. In this issue, we are wrapping up the summer months and have brought some great interviews with a local pasta maker, who just so happens to be the marketing director for Parks & Rec and with a young local filmmaker who is definitely on his way up. Be sure to check out the all new City Buzz section for past and upcoming events, as well as the new Social Edmond section! We are happy to receive story ideas and suggestions from all of you (send them to Sherrih@ edmondactive.com),

Natural Grocers
Natural Grocers is located on 164th, right across from Walmart Neighborhood Market. It opened on August 12th and this store boasts orgainic produce, naturally fed meats and more. After a brief visit, this store may be our favorite for specialty & organic items, as well as a section in the back carrying books with anything you need to know about organic eating, food allergies & more.

Aldi Food Market Aldi Food Market is an interesting concept. It comes from a split between the German brothers who started Trader Joe’s. Aldi is like a mini warehouse, you have to pay 25 cents for a cart, and offers what we may all percieve as off brands. However, we went to review the products and they seem to be really great (some name brands can be found at a lesser price). We purchased $18 worth of food and came out with 2 bags of groceries. Not bad at all.

Zoes Kitchen Zoes Kitchen is a greek franchise that can be found on Penn by Dick’s Sporting Goods. They have a great patio, a decent menu selection and we really like their friendly presence online and at their social media networks.
Filigree Filigree is an amazing new clothing boutique featuring very unique high fashion clothing and accessories, along with a great bag & boot selection. They are very friendly, so we recommend this store highly! You can stop in to visit in Downtown Edmond.
Sweeney McGann’s Sweeney McGann’s is Downtown Edmond’s newest restaraunt/bar to join Othelllo’s, Italian Jim’s, Cafe Evoke and Java Dave’s. Sweeny’s is an authentic Irish Pub serving corned beef dishes, fish & chips and more. We wish them luck as they seem like a really fun group of owners!
Del Taco It’s about time Del Taco made it to Oklahoma! As far as mexican fast food chains go, Del Taco is one of our favorites. The Edmond franchise opens in September and it’s right across the street from Starbucks on Second Street. For all the UCO students out there...their drive thru is open 24 hours! Once it opens you have to try their Fish Tacos. The best thing about Del Taco, it’s fresh!

MY YARD
Bigger Is Better In Small Spaces After downsizing this summer, I have rediscovered my love of gardening. I have always gotten flats of my favorite flowers due to the size of my old gardens and I thought that would save me money, but since I arrived in our new tiny space a little late in the planting season, all that was available at Home Depot were larger plants. In the past, I had heard gardening experts state that bigger was better as the root balls were less prone to shock and low and behold they were right. The other added benefit seems to be that I saved $40 & the space looks more complete.
Puprle Mums were $8.99 each, White mum was split in half at $6.99, Purple & Green Begonias were $4.99 each, potted Begonias were $14 each and all found at Home Depot.
The Grass Is Always Greener... Even though the City of Edmond has their mandatory odd/even watering plan in place, right now is the perfect time to thicken up an old yard, your newer yard or start your lawn before the winter. I have found that every lawn I have overseeded has come back the next spring thicker, more drought resistant and just greener. I always use Kentucky Blue Grass seed to overseed because it sticks around in the summer with a great dark green color, but also because it doesn’t die back in the winter, which means less allergies for me. The best part about this seed is that it requires less water in the summer, which saves water and money on your utility bill. You can find this seed at Walmart for $7.99 per bag and it covers about 5,000 sq. ft.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT BUNEE TOMLINSON
At 21, Bunee Tomlinson already has a diverse and expanding filmography under his belt. He has directed several short films and landed PR gigs with clients like Citizens Bank of Edmond through his company, Windswept Media. His latest film, Hana, a touching slice of life short about a man on his deathbed remembering one last fond memory before he passes away, debuted to a packed theater at the 2014 deadCENTER Film Festival. Edmond Active sat down with him to discuss Hana, how he manages to produce his films, and the future. I’m Bunee Tomlinson. I’m a local filmmaker here in Edmond, Okla., and this is my fourth year with a film in the deadCENTER Film Festival. I’m so excited to be in it again. Hana is my latest short. I produced it back in November. This is the very first film that I funded myself; I didn’t do crowdfunding like I did with my last short. During my day job, I produce commercials, work on reality productions, and do various projects for clients; so what I did is I saved my money and I selffunded this amazing project. And as the director I really wanted to do something diverse. I wanted to do something that was in a different language. Part of the film was in Japanese, and so it was – I think that was the biggest challenge on the film, was to translate it into Japanese. I actually had a translator, and we worked with our actress, who was actually Vietnamese and didn’t speak Japanese, so we worked on teaching her the language, teaching her the lines, how to pronounce it. I’m really into that culture. I love seeing how it’s put together and everything. I really wanted to set it back during World War II. And so, we designed it ourselves with virtually no budget, we had a $500 budget and everything, and it was a good project. We had a local team, all Oklahoma filmmakers. We had three production companies involved; we had WeerN
Productions with Wendy and Sharee, they were my producers, and then Freestyle Productions, he provided my camera and everything. And then, I run my own company, called Windswept Media. I think the biggest inspiration for me to create this is that sometimes we fear people passing away, but we don’t know what’s happening inside them. And so, what I wanted to create, is I wanted to show a man who is reflecting on a moment he experienced, one of his good times in life, and reflect on the good times he had with this one girl. The nurse reminds him of this beautiful woman that he met when he was overseas, and I just wanted to show that death is a beautiful thing and that this man has lived a good life, and while we fear it, I think that, by showing this, It really helps reflect that it’s a beautiful moment. He died peacefully with this fantasy that he had. Today films are focused on what’s going to sell and what’s popular. Student film makers tend to make films with a lot of explosions and gore. I’m not saying all student filmmakers are like that; go to Nifty in Seattle and you’ll meet some amazing student filmmakers who tell a hell of a good story. You’ll be amazed. People just want to create stuff that’s just gory or whatever’s going to make them popular. That’s just not what my focus is. My focus is to tell a story. I like to get people to think. Like with Hana, there’s a beautiful twist at the end that can be interpreted so many different ways. People see this film in a different way, and that’s what I like. My feeling is that you shouldn’t create content just to make yourself popular. You should create content that feels right to you. I don’t think a lot of filmmakers don’t do that. Maybe they’re afraid of what others are going to think. My goal is to create a story and tell it, because you’re going to get so many different views on an idea of yours. But if you’re proud of it, than you’ve succeeded. And if people hated it, you still succeeded because you made them feel something.

Diane Self Tall Girl Specialty Pasta In addition to running the marketing for Edmond Parks and Rec, teaching swimming at the Y and coordinating the Edmond Farmers Market, Diane Self also make her own specialty pasta that she sells online and at the Farmers Market. How did you get started in all of this? I’m just crazy like that. [Laughter] That’s the short answer. What’s the long answer? I have always cooked. I come from a family of six and it was something that I showed really early on, and my Mom was like, “you’re cooking dinner once a week,
for the family.” Of course at that age I’m like, ‘no I’m not!’ But that lasted for a while. I lived in Ft. Smith Arkansas for about 12 years, before I moved here, and I just decided to do some catering. I did it out of my house and I did it for friends and people I knew. I worked at a fitness center and I knew hundreds of people so it was easy. October through December I was busy every weekend, catering. Then I moved here and I didn’t know anyone. My Mom had bought me a home pasta machine years ago; the kind you crank by hand. I tried to make some pasta once, for my son but I didn’t dry it and I just threw it in the pot. My son was like, “that’s gross!” Okay, whatever and I quit doing
it. Then I moved here and I thought, “you know what, I’ll try it again.” I went home and saw my Mom and she had some pasta in the cabinet that she had dried. And she said, “you know, Diane, there really hasn’t been anything you couldn’t do, in the kitchen.” So I pulled it out when I got home and I started making pasta. Then I started talking about it. Then people at work started buying it. Then I started playing with flavors. Then I got set up at the Farmers Market. Every time I’m at the Farmers Market I sell out by 11:00; and that’s on a bad day. Where did you come up with your recipes? Are they self-made? A little bit of research on the internet and mostly self-made.

So there’s not a family recipe that’s been handed down from generation to generation? Oh heavens no. We’re German and Irish. [Laughing] The Lemon Basil, I made that up myself. Really, I made it all up by my self, to be quite honest. The Spinach pasta that I do—I had a gentleman that would buy it at The Y, and he came up to me said that he’d bought some spinach pasta from the store and he said that whenever he cooked it, it fell apart. And he said, “your’s doesn’t.” That’s because they dehydrated it. I dehydrated some once and I took it to the office and I gave it our administrative assistant and she said it fell apart when she cooked it. Now I air-dry all my pasta. So you are sharing cooking space with Millie at Millie’s Table. When do you find the time to make your pasta? I usually come in on Sunday mornings. Every once in a while I will come in one night a week. Do you see your pasta business taking off? Yes I do. I’ve never had somebody come back and tell they didn’t love my pasta. They’re not come back and saying, “yeah, we liked it.” They’re coming back and saying they loved it. I tell people that buy it that they won’t be able to eat store-bought pasta again. Do you have a recommended
way for people to serve your pasta? Yeah, a little bit. I had a lady come up and she asked if I use sauce on it? I said, “well, actually, not really.” Then she said, “well then I don’t want it.” What I do with the Lemon-Basil is saute some shrimp or chicken with some garlic and set it to the side. Then I will add some white cooking wine and some cream and a little extra butter and mushrooms and let that boil down a little before I add the cooked pasta. So a little more scampi-style rather than spaghetti-style? Yes. How can people find your pasta? They are best to contact me by phone or through Facebook www.facebook.com/pages/TallGirl-Specialty-Pasta, or go down to the Edmond Famers Market. If I’m not at the Farmers Market my pasta will be at Wayne Whitmore’s booth. Tall Girl Specialty Pasta Flavors include white, wheat, tomato, tomato basil, spinach, wheat spinach, lemon basil and a very flavorful roasted red pepper. I also have “soup noodles” thicker and shorter for your favorite soup or even beef and noodles. I have also added cheese ravioli with either white or wheat pasta.

Stories Of Faith And Courage
“Where Was God?,” an Oklahoma documentary film that explores the role of faith and hope in overcoming life’s storms through the eyes of survivors of the devastating tornadoes in Moore, Okla. and Joplin, Mo., “We are very excited to continue spreading this film throughout Oklahoma, especially in the Edmond and north Oklahoma City areas,” said Steven Earp, the film’s executive producer and lead pastor at Elevate Church in Moore. “It is our hope that the film continues to touch the lives of those affected by the devastating storms as well as those going through any life storm.” The documentary, directed, produced, edited and filmed in Oklahoma, follows the stories of survivors, parents, children, first responders and volunteers who recount the timeline of destruction and share the devastating and miraculous events that changed their lives forever. “Where Was God?” premiered at the Moore Warren Theatre for the one-year anniversary of the storm in May. The film nearly sold out all the first weekend screenings with nearly 15,000 people seeing the film in total so far. “The response we’ve received from the community has been extraordinary,” said Chris Forbes, “Where Was God?” producer and Edmond resident. “We’re close to taking the film even further with screenings in Tulsa and Woodward. Anyone outside of our area can request a screening on our website. We’ve heard from supporters in Canada and Australia, as well as across the U.S.” For more information, show times and tickets, visit the documentary’s website, www. wherewasgod.com. “Where Was God?” is a Behold Motion Pictures film in association with Elevate Faith Productions. The film was also produced by Brian Cates and directed by Travis Palmer.
