AROUND EDMOND Welcome back to Around Edmond! It’s been awhile since our last issue and after our publisher was hired for a corporate photography position at Hobby Lobby. Since then, as we have 1 car, I have been reorganizing my business schedule around driving 100 miles a day! This is not been an easy feat, as I have had a great schedule in place for the last 5 years. However, not impossible, as this year has taught me to “Keep It Simple” and I am applying that currently so that I may get back to publishing this magazine monthly, along with our weekly online content at Edmondactive.com and our social networks daily content at Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and

then

finally

cleaning out our Pinterest by simplifying our boards there. I want to thank all of you for your support while I slowly move toward these goals! This months issue will highlight an amazing football season for the UCO Bronchos and highlight the return of Wags Creations owner Susan Foskin after she suffered a 2nd stroke in 15 months. We bring you information on Edmond Wine Shop’s new Wine Tasting Kits and highlight local animal hospital Animal Medical Center I35 in Locally Owned! SPORTS

UCO Broncho’s Football Gives Edmond Something To Cheer About This hasn’t exactly been a banner year for sports in OKC. The OKC Thunder have been plagued with injuries and they’re off to one of their worst starts since moving to Oklahoma. The OU Sooner’s football team has been a big let down and the OSU Cowboy’s are in a rebuilding phase. The only bright spot in the local sports scene, it seems, is the UCO Broncho’s Football team. If that seems like an unlikely occurrence, it might be because it is. Not since 2008 have the Broncho’s had a winning season. And the last few years have been, to say the least, terrible. From 2010 to 2013 the best the Broncho’s could do was 2 wins in each of those seasons. But now that has changed. The Broncho’s have turned it all around. They have gone from zero to hero in the span of one season. Thanks to the efforts of Coach Nick Bobeck and his staff, the Broncho’s are now contenders in the MIAA. Nick Bobeck took over the UCO

SPORTS Football team prior to the 2012 season and he and his crew went to work on transforming the Broncho’s into the budding powerhouse we see now. It did take every bit of the last three years to do it, but the Broncho’s look to be on track to accomplish great things in the coming years. The good news for the Broncho’s is that most of their key players will be with them for a couple more years, at least. Their star Quaterback, Chas Stallard, is only a Redshirt Freshman and he’s made a huge impact on the team. He’s currently at the top end of the class in the MIAA for pass efficientcy and scoring. And their Runningback, Sophmore

Jake Gandara, is second in the MIAA for rushing. With another season of savy recruiting, there’s no reason not to think the Broncho’s could be in contention for a Division Championship, or even better, a Division II National Championship. I know that’s asking a lot at this point, but you might as well reach for the stars, right? The MIAA is one of the toughest leagues in Div II sports. So to achieve success this soon after taking the reins, Coach Bobeck and his staff have a lot to feel good about, going into the offseason. And Edmond has a lot to look forward to for next seasons Broncho’s Football.

LOCAL FLAVOR Edmond Wine Shop Wine Tasting Kits CHOOSE A THEME AND A BUDGET. The Thanksgiving holiday is right around the corner. Here, I chose a grape, pinot noir, as the theme, since it is the most recommended red wine to serve with a traditional “turkey and dressing” holiday meal. The budget is $20-$30 per bottle. I chose three pinot noirs from three countries, all from the same vintage. The tasting structure will help tasters get a good understanding of the grape. Also, choosing the same vintage gives you a great idea as to what a particular year was like around the world. ARRIVE AT EDMOND WINE SHOP WITH A FEW DETAILS. How many people do you plan to serve? When is the event? What time of day is the event? Will you serve food? These are the questions we will ask when you come by the shop. An event on Wednesday evening may not require the same volume of wine as a Saturday night event. The same goes for Saturday afternoon vs. Saturday evening events. Food changes the game for all wines. The more specific you can be about seasonings and spices used in the dishes, the better we can “fine tune” our recommendations. I can recommend dishes to serve with the wines, if you need inspiration. We will send you out the door with a plan for success. I provide technical notes, winery history info, vintage reports and any other pertinent information to help enhance your tasitng experience. Each packet comes with a suggeted tasting order as well. Call 341-9122 for more information.

EDMOND PEOPLE

SUSAN FOSKIN: FAITH AND GRACE Susan Mason Foskin, owner of Wags Creations here in Edmond, is among many in the US who are well educated and trying their hand at a creative career which is outside their chosen certified field. Susan has a Master’s in computer programming and was working in the corporate world as a computer programmer while working on crafting custom pieces for a growing clientele, on the side. In 2006, Susan decided to go full time with her

hobby and Wags Creations was born, featuring custom wood home décor like crosses, hand made signs and up until May of 2014, Susan specialized in wreath making, and had a popular Wreath of the Month club through Wags Creations. In April of 2013, though, Susan had a small stroke (and per Susan, small in the grand scheme of things.) This stroke happened at a small craft show in OKC at the Farmers Market, and on top of her Rheumatoid Arthritis, caused her speech to slur a bit and caused her foot to drag a bit, to which a couple of customers thought Susan slumping down on the ground meant she must’ve been on drugs. The signs Susan was showing didn’t at all indicate to these onlookers that something may have been medically wrong (see the information for recognizing a stroke from the CDC below.) This instance required that Susan make some changes. Susan was told to change her diet, to reduce her stress level and that’s what she did. She was lucky to have not had to rehab back from debilitating loss of speech, loss of memory or worse. Even her Rheumatologist at the time didn’t see any issue with the heavy hitting

medication she was taking. Fast forward through having product in 4 stores, the busy holiday season of 2013 with the craft shows and holiday orders. And then the busy spring of 2014, and with the Wreath of the Month club gaining immensely in popularity and work, for Susan, her work load was starting to increase to almost her pre stroke levels in 2013. On May 6, 2014, everything changed for Susan. The day started out like any other day, delivering custom orders, restocking stores. It was a really hot day with no wind, but Susan gave no thoughts to this and moved along. On this day Susan was consolidating her two current storage units to one larger unit. While moving items and sifting through items she thought she may put up for sale, Susan reached for her phone in her back pocket and the next thing she knew, she saw her iPhone laying on the concrete, shattered. She stood there, leaning up against the storage unit just staring at the phone in disbelief, uttering “dammit”. When she heard what had come out of her mouth, it alarmed her, not because of the phone shattering, but because “dammit” was NOT what she heard coming out of her mouth. She repeated the word over and over and over and it was not coming out correctly, just garbled. She leaned over with her right hand and picked up the phone and thought to herself, “This cannot be happening again!!!” Susan then thought she’d just need to cool off and stumbled through the storage unit making it to her minivan, where she was able to turn the van and its A/C unit on. It didn’t blow the usual cool air quickly and Susan’s head was pounding by this time, her vision was blurry and she knew she couldn’t drive home. Susan then decided to call a good family

friend who lived a few miles away. She had very garbled speech by this time and had to repeat herself numerous times before she could convey where she was located, and her friend, who understood something was gravely wrong, sent her husband, who was off duty police officer, to rescue Susan. When he arrived, he immediately called Tommy, Susan’s husband, and Tommy told him to call for an ambulance immediately. The ambulance arrived at the same time as Tommy & Shadow and they were off to the hospital. On Susan’s 25 minute trip across town to the ER, she had a ladybug land on her chest so she used this as her focal point while she slipped in and out of consciousness. At one point she had heard the noise of the ambulance dying and the driver trying to restart it, to which she asked the paramedic if the van just died and he said yes, but not to worry as they were only 10 minutes away. Susan found herself being pushed on a gurney by two amazing EMSA guys, down a service road with oncoming traffic and across the parking lot and into the emergency room. From this time until about June, Susan had to relearn so many things, including, walking, hand eye coordination, and some things had just left her memory. In talking with Susan, she told me that at one point she had been going through her art supplies and just didn’t know what they were for. So one day, Susan decided to stop in to see the ladies at Paper Arts, on 2nd St. just west of Fretz. This started an amazing friendship and they are a huge part of Susan’s amazingly fast recovery and discovery of her new creations. That and of course the amazing prayer chain that started the day her stroke occurred. The last week of October saw Wags Creations debuting all new art at the Affair of the Heart at the OKC Fairgrounds and when asked about how amazingly fast Susan’s

recovery was, Susan’s husband, Tommy just replied, and with a huge grateful smile, “It’s all just gravy.” Susan’s story and crazy fast recovery are a testament to the quick thinking friends, EMSA workers, and terrific hospital staff. The CDC states that the time after having a stroke is the most important due to the brain being without oxygen. Although stroke risk increases with age, strokes can—and do—occur at any age. In 2009, 34% of people hospitalized for stroke were younger than 65 years, and stroke kills almost 130,000 Americans each year—that’s 1 out of every 19 deaths. EARLY ACTION IS IMPORTANT FOR STROKE Know the warning signs and symptoms of stroke so that you can act fast if you or someone you know might be having a stroke. The chances of survival are greater when emergency treatment begins quickly. In a 2005 survey, most respondents—93%— recognized sudden numbness on one side as a symptom of stroke. Only 38% were aware of all major symptoms and knew to call 9-1-1 when someone was having a stroke. Patients who arrive at the emergency room within 3 hours of their first symptoms tend to have less disability 3 months after a stroke than those who received delayed care. • Symptoms are: Sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body. • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking, or difficulty understanding speech. • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes. • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance, or lack of coordination. • Sudden severe headache with no known cause.

Call 9-1-1 immediately if you or someone else has any of these symptoms. (Source: CDC. gov.) You can follow Susan’s personal blog at Wagscreator. blogspot. com or Wags Creations at www. Facebook. com/

LOCALLY OWNED I 35 Animal Hospital: Your Pets Best Friends Animal Medical Center I35 is much more than a veterinary service, boarding and emergency care provider. For over 10 years, it has been home to some of the most caring pet enthusiasts we know. Dr. Susan Tomlinson, our two labs vet, found us at Twitter one evening in 2011. I had put out a call for help as our youngest Lab had eaten 3 bars of Dove bar soap. @ EdmondVet responded back asking all the relevant questions and told us to keep an eye on him. Lucky had a terrible weekend, and Dr. Tomlinson had been checking on him via Twitter the entire time. Come to find out, Lucky had learned how to open the drawers in our bathroom, as I caught him in the act about 2 weeks later. After I had dog proofed the bathroom, we thought our need for assistance with our now 12 & 13 year old labs was over. Nope. Cottonballs were next on Lucky’s list. And then came Pongo’s foray into silently and stealthily eating out of the closed garbage can, which had us thinking he was becoming paralyzed at one point. Luckily, none of these antics required us to ever take these guys into the office. However, when our 1st dog and our baby, Purdy, slowly started hiding, becoming sick to her stomach and became all around sluggish in May of 2012, we called Dr. Tomlinson and she made arrangements to see Purdy. Unfortunately, Purdy’s kidney was in complete failure and it was her time, after 12 amazing and healthy years. Everyone at the office was so very nice; we wouldn’t have been able to get through that tough experience without them. They took care of everything and sent our family the nicest condolence card. We took Pongo and Lucky in to see Dr. Susan for shot updates and a general all around checkup in June of 2014, after having taken them to another vet previously that our dogs never really

connected with. Lucky is a different Lab in that he doesn’t trust many strangers, whereas Pongo has never met a stranger in his entire life. Upon getting to the office, Lucky was shivering just a bit and after about 3 minutes with Dr. Susan he was completely comfortable with her and she became the first vet in 11 years to be able to give him a check up without having to muzzle him. Chris and I just stood and stared in disbelief. While someone may find Animal Medical Center I35 in the phone book, mentioned at our facebook page or find Dr. Susan at Twitter, and think it’s just another vet & boarding service, they are certainly not. This practice, and that means everyone who works here, is one of Edmond’s diamonds for care and service. And if you follow Around Edmond at EdmondActive.com, you’ve read about Lucky’s most recent antics with the consumption of 18 bags of Swiss Miss Hot Chocolate, including the packaging, and which should have done him in. Again. I contacted Dr. Susan, this time by Facebook, and luckily, Lucky was ok. If you see me out, ask me about my all new Pro Heat Pet Carpet Cleaner. It’s a workhorse, for sure!
