Edmond Christmas 2014 Christmas Light Driving Guide In 2009, we took it upon ourselves to create a driving map of what we thought were the top residential and community light displays in and around Edmond. There are guides out there that tell you where to go to see different community displays around the metro, but we had never seen one for residential displays. We didn’t know if it was a good idea, at the time, but what we did know was that every year our family would pile in the car to seek out amazing light displays. In our 6th season of creating this guide, we’ve found that because of technology, our readers have been using this guide via mobile devices in large numbers, and that our family is definitely not the only ones who head out seeking the thrill of amazing home light displays as part of their holiday routine. For 4 years, the display in Thornbrooke, just east of Bryant on 33rd St, has always been the hands down winner donning approximately 90,000 lights set to music. This year, however, a gentleman named Chris McIntire has claimed to have donned over 100,000 lights in his display. You can find it on Sooner Rd just north of Sorghum Mill Rd. on Calm Waters Way. It is spectacular and takes over as the most decorated home in Edmond! We hope you enjoy the list of displays we have compiled, and utilize your mobile devices to head out and enjoy the displays that have been put together for all to enjoy.

LOCAL FLAVOR Christmas Sangria Although Sangria is mostly thought of as a summer beverage and as a strictly alcoholic beverage, this recipe is for the holidays. And I tried it 3 different ways as not everyone consumes alcohol. The fruit ingredients are perfect for Christmas, with the vanilla bean, cinnamon, raisins, dried apples, apricots and cranberries. First we tested it with brandy boiled with the fruit, then with red wine, from Edmond Wine Shop, and club soda. This is the typical way of making Sangria, and it was very good, with a terrific subtle aftertaste. Then we tried it with brandy boiled with the fruit and combined it with two bottles of sparkling red wine for more of a holiday flair, and this was really tasty. Finally, we tried a non alcoholic version with no brandy and two bottles of sparkling red grape juice, to see if it would make a good candidate for a general holiday punch and it was just amazing! We hope you enjoy this recipe! Apple Cinnamon Sangria Ingredients 1/2 cup dried apples 1/2 cup dried cranberries 1/2 cup raisins 6 dried apricots, cut into slivers 1/4 cup brandy 2 tablespoons honey 1/2 vanilla bean, slit lengthwise 1 2 3/4 inch stick cinnamon 1 750 milliliter bottle Rioja red wine w/ club soda or 1 750 milliliter Sparkling Red Wine or for Non Alcoholic 2 bottles of Welch’s Sparkling Red Grape Directions: In a large saucepan stir together the apples, cranberries, raisins, apricots, brandy, honey, vanilla bean, and cinnamon. Cook and stir until mixture comes to a gentle boil. Remove from heat; cool slightly. Stir in wine. Transfer mixture to a pitcher. Cover and chill for up to 24 hours to blend flavors. Just before serving, stir in club soda. Serve in glasses over ice. If desired, using a slotted spoon, spoon some of the fruit into each glass.

LOCAL FLAVOR A Pinterest Holiday Project:

Christmas Tree Cupcakes

I have decided to try my hand at a Pinterest baking project. This project seemed like it would be fun to create. And if it worked out, I thought it would make a fun treat to feature here for little ones, and might also make a unique Christmas party centerpiece. Because some Pins only provide a photo graphic showing the steps but no written instructions or ingredients list, I wasn’t too sure about the difficulty level. My first tip for this project, head straight to a bakery like Cupcakes To Go Go and purchase white frosted chocolate cupcakes. You’ll spend most of your budget on this project on white frosting, coloring, the piping bag and attachments, and silver

sprinkles. Overall, this project was really fun and would be a fun winter project for kids. Unlike the funny Pinterest fail meme’s out there that depict this project as a loser, it was not at all. I don’t bake, and found it to be relatively easy and really fun to construct. INGREDIENTS for 5 Trees 5 chocolate cupcakes 1 container of white frosting for tops of cupcakes 2 containers of white frosting to color for ice cream cones and leaves 1 container of leaf green frosting colorant Tips and piping bag for colored frosting

1 package of sugar ice cream cones Powdered sugar to create snow on trees Candy silver balls for tree décor Directions 1. Frost chocolate cupcakes with white frosting and set aside. 2. Mix colorant with white frosting and fill piping bag. Spread the green frosting on cones with a spatula. 3. Set frosted cones on top of cupcakes 4. Use a small tip for the tree branches and pull out for a more branch like affect, allow about an hour for this step 5. Apply decorative sprinkles to your taste 6. Lightly sprinkle powdered sugar for a snow drift affect
