AROUND EDMOND We are celebrating our 50th edition of Edmond Active with this issue, and I couldn’t be more proud as an independent publisher, and as a resident of Edmond. When I first started, I had never written anything, while my husband had been an editor for over 20 years, along with being a professional photographer. My first online blog at EdmondActive.com “Around Edmond” was horrifying to write and I realized it is difficult to put yourself out there publicly. I learned quickly, and learned that not everyone will like me or what I wrote about. I was aiming at the goal to write to the residents, giving you all the information you were looking for, giving you city information in one place and giving you a unique glimpse into the local businesses in town. As frightening as it was to first put myself out there, Around Edmond has become one of my favorite things to do, and recently I have been told that many in town rely on our social networks to see what’s new, what’s coming and for relevant information. I am humbled as I am not a bona fide journalist by degree. I am also human, and all of you are very forgiving when I err (I try not to, but it’s inevitable when you’re human). As well, we were the first in the metro to create editions based on themes, such as our Christmas issues that are an entire issue dedicated to our Christmas Light Guide. Many have followed over the years, and this last Christmas, it was fun to see people with the magazine or on their phones actually using it! Some may wonder why we don’t have 72 issues after 6 years and I can only say that along with some amazing contributors throughout the years, it is just the two of us and when life happens with two sons living with us, we rolled with the punches. And, I can tell you that 6 of the issues
were missed because of our housing issue last year and that will remain one of my biggest regrets. One of my biggest blessings is, of course, all of the amazing people that support us, people that I have interviewed, along with the fun events in and around Edmond. I have also learned that I have a talent as a photographer. I love shooting photos of people in their natural environment as well as shooting fun and unique photos around town, and product in only the way that I can. My husband was raised on film photography then moving to digital photography in 2000 and he is constantly laughing at the great shots that come out of my iPhone. Personally, I think that ones enthusiasm comes through their lens so the medium shouldn’t really matter. For me, writing is just this for me, as well. I am always thinking, as a resident, abount what relevant information to provide online and through our social networks and this keeps me constantly thinking and constantly connected. When we started, we were focused on the stories of local residents and businesses along with local event coverage and we are true to that to this day, often with others following suit. When we started, most publications mainly featured advetorial, and as residents, we didn’t like it and I knew I could effect change. As well, we were the first on the social network front and back then not too many businesses understood the importance of having a presence on social media and most just politely listened as I told them what a valuable tool it was, especially with more and more residents acquiring mobile phones. That was 7 years ago, and it’s so great to see businesses now participating in the conversation with local residents! This last month, our Facebook page reached over 140,000 people and had 12,855
people engaged because of Heard on Hurd and because of a double rainbow photo taken on my front porch that received over 4,700 likes. Sometimes all of you surprise me as to what content you like and what content you don’t! Although being good at what you do doens’t mean you’re the winner. Knowing that not everyone wins all the time has always been my motto and I am always thinking forward and trying to push the envelope. I thank all of you who endure my constant need for change and hope you like some of the changes I have coming this spring, as I think they should be fun! Thanks to all 22,000+ of you who follow us at @EdmondActive on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest, who have picked up copies of the magazine each month, and who support the businesses that support Edmond Active Magazine. You’ve not only supported local business to its core, but given me a chance to find out what I truly love to do and discover new talents that I never knew I had! I appreciate every single one of you for that, on both fronts. I take our local businesses and our local economy personally, as most know about me. This month, we feature the fun of ACMUCO’s Metro Music Fest, have upcoming events, have information on the Hope Center’s Home Giveaway with McCaleb Homes to benefit the Hope Center, information on tropical plants for pots from Edmond’s own Neighborhood Gardener Heather Popowsky, and another amazing article from Edmond Family Counseling. In addition, don’t forget to check out Shop Edmond, Social Edmond and City Buzz for a head’s up on what’s new. Thanks again to all of you, here’s to you and another 50 editions! Sherri

CITY BUZZ
In case you didn’t get out this last Saturday, it’s time for the Farmer’s Market on Saturday’s from 8-1 pm! If you are new to Edmond, it’s located in Downtown Edmond, just west of Broaday on 1st St. During the early spring, you can find Oklahoma Grown, Tall Girl Pasta made in Edmond, the Urban Argrarian who has some amazing late winter greens, honey, flowers, plants and more. As the season progresses, look for the Farmer’s Market to open on Wedsnesdays from 8-1 pm. We stopped by this weekend and picked up some fresh pasta and some asparagus. Both were so delicious, and we love that we are supporting local business owners!

Danforth is finally open from Pennsylvania to May Ave. This may have been the best part of my year so far as it had been closed for over a year. I moved last year 3 blocks west of our old neighborhood and this is my gateway to the world, LOL! If you haven’t yet, stop by any of the 26 parks in Edmond to see the amazing bulbs that are blooming in unison! Sometimes their blooms don’t happen for a perfect Easter setting, or like 2013, they are frozen under a thin veil of ice. This year, Hafer Park made the perfect setting for Easter fun, picnics, and overall cheer. Thanks to all of the City workers who work on these displays, they are just beautiful.

My Home The Hope Home By Jennifer Smith-Hodgens, of McCaleb Homes and Oklahome Home Builders
The Hope Center of Edmond has been a foundational part of our community for 30 years. This wonderful organization exists to meet the basic needs of the people in our community who are having personal emergencies or crises. Each week around 200 volunteers rotate shifts to assist staff and the combined support of many of the churches, businesses and individuals in the community means that they have the resources to provide food, clothing and utility assistance from a single community agency. To celebrate the Hope Center’s 30th anniversary, they have partnered with McCaleb Homes to build a brand new Craftsman style Bungalow home in the new Town Square community off Danforth between Coltrane and Sooner. This home will be donated by McCaleb Homes to the Hope Center to raffle off and give away to one lucky winner. The “Hope Home” sits atop a tiered hill overlooking Town Square’s Ice House fishing Lake and dock. A turquoise blue front door matches the coastal blue windows and the drive-through porte cochere and detached garage welcomes guests to the home. Inside, gorgeous
hardwood floors carry into the study and into the open concept kitchen and banquette seating dining area. Vintageinspired light fixtures set off the quartz countertops and custom made cabinetry. Tall vaulted ceilings and floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace give the living room a grand yet cozy feeling. Upstairs, kids will find a great hang-out bonus room with amazing views of the wooded preserve across the street. With 2400sf mol, the Hope Home is valued over $450,000 and one lucky winner will be the future homeowner by purchasing a ticket for only $100. The Hope Home will be fully furnished by Emory Anne’s furniture from April 17th through winning day, May 10th. Open house is everyday from 1-6pm. The home will be specially featured during the Spring Parade of Homes, Friday May 1- Sunday May 10th. The drawing will be held on Mother’s Day, Sunday May 10th at Town Square. Winner does not have to be present to win. Tickets can be purchased at www. HopeCenterDreamHome.com and information about the Spring Parade of Homes along with a map to the community can be found at www.ParadeofHomesok.com.

My Yard Bringing The Tropics By Heather Popowsky/Neighborhood Gardener
Tropical Plants in Oklahoma Gardens and Containers There are fewer more common topics in Oklahoma than the weather on a daily basis and for good reason. Oklahomans can experience the extreme frigid temperatures as low as -5 to the polar opposite of heat indexes of 115 plus. Nothing is as sweet as enjoying the warmer and milder months on a patio or poolside with friends and family. One way
to bring a beautiful summer time ambience to patios and pool decks is planting tropical plants. Here are some tools and tips to understanding the different varieties to plant, the care of them during the outdoor growing season, and maintenance during the winter months. Oklahoma may feel quite humid during the summer months but is far from considered a tropical climate. Certain varieties of tropical plants fair the different elements experienced by the various climate and weather changes here in different ways. Here are 4 different varieties of tropical plants that fair the greatest in Central Oklahoma. 1. BIRD OF PARADISE The thick green foliage of this exotic plant can resemble the look and feel of a banana plants leaves, and the bloom of bright yellows, oranges, and reds. This tropical is great planted in a container that has loamy soil and its placement should receive at least half of a day worth of sunlight. Fertilization is best during the early spring when it’s brought out from its winter storage location and
fertilized mildly during its growing season. Given that the foliage is broad leafed its placement should also be in a wind protected corridor. Mild pruning is needed during the growing season of all frayed leaves on the outer portion of the stalks because the new leaves form from the center. Consistent watering is needed during its growing season as well. Right before the first frost this tropical needs an indoor placement by a window. Good places to store tropical plants during the winter is by a garage or guest bedroom window. When over wintering tropical plants its best to water about once a week or once every two weeks. Over watering them during the winter months can cause fungus problems or death. 2. ELEPHANT EAR PHILODENDRON (Philodendron bipinnatifidum) This tropical has beautiful thick dark green and wide split-leafed foliage. It is prized for its architectural grouping of its leaves. Unlike the bird of paradise this exotic plant should be placed in morning sunlight but enough radiant afternoon light
10 edmondactive.com
My Yard to nurture itself. This makes the elephant ear philodendron perfect for covered patios! Spent leaves can be clipped away at the base of the leaf stalk carefully during the growing season as new growth forms. The split leafed formation makes this plant a little more tolerant to breezes and wind but shouldn’t be placed in high wind areas. Fertilization should be done early spring and 1-2 more times during its growing season. Philodendron plants like to be consistently watered but also very much appreciates fully drying out between watering. The same winter care rules applies to this tropical plant that are written above for the bird of paradise. 3. FAN PALM There are a host of varieties of palms plants, but the fan palm is an Oklahoma choice because its tolerance of the wind. Fewer tropical plants fair better in the high temperature and wind than a fan palm. Its green fan like foliage can be beautifully planted in a container with bright annuals planted under them. The fan palms placement of full sun and winder locations lend itself to needing more irrigation than the other two tropical
plants mentioned above. It also will want consistent fertilization throughout the growing season. Spent leaves should be pruned halfway down the leaf stalk and when the stalk fully dies away can simply be removed by hand. Over wintering instructions for a fan palm resemble the above instructions but should also include thinning leaves out before indoor placement. 4. ELEPHANT EAR BULBS If an exotic tropical look is desired but the hassle of over wintering a tropical plant isn’t, this is an instant winner! Elephant ear bulbs can be bought everywhere from a home improvement center to a local nursery. Elephant ear plants come in all sizes as well and should be planted with sunlight available during half of the day in well-drained soil. Wind is a factor to these wide and heavy leafed plants. The advantage to planting a bulb plant like this is that at the end of the warm season simply dig up the bulb, let the green stalks die back, cut the green stalks off at the base of the bulb, and store your bulb in a cool dry place over the winter. Around late March, after the danger of hard freezes pass, the
bulb can be replanted the following year. Here is to spring work turning into beautiful benefits of summer. “Summer is the time when one sheds one’s tensions with one’s clothes, and the right kind of day is jeweled balm for the battered spirit. A few of those days and you can become drunk with the belief that all’s right with the world.” ~Ada Louise Huxtable The advice above has been accumulated from my education in the field of horticulture to the almost decade of owning a landscaping business in the state of Oklahoma. Due to space and the purpose of this article I couldn’t elaborate on all the tips I gave and couldn’t fit all the advice I have for the season. So I encourage you to find me on facebook under Neighborhood Gardener or on Twitter @gardenchica for questions about this article and further information on monthly tips and to do lists items. Look for me here in March to keep Edmond up to date on improving your garden this season.

Celebrating Our
First 50 Issues! When we set out to do our first edition of Edmond Active Magazine, our competitor had his ad sales girl telling as many businesses that would listen that we were a health and fitness magazine. Then the same said competor sold businesses ad space in their new ad section named aptly Around Edmond, 4 months after I had started Around Edmond that had a terrific readership online. This was the beginning of Edmond Active Magazine and thankfully we no longer have to worry about these things as you all know us and appreciate our difference from our competitors! Since then it has been my mission, as it was when we first started, to make an extra effort to keep advertorial out of our community magazine and keep the information about the community, with a special emphasis on combining our print effort with our social networking efforts to maximize the positive impact what we do has on the community. I am so proud of what we have done, have plans to do and the positive impact we know we have had on local residents and for local businesses, I can’t wait to get started on the next 50! Thanks to all of you!!

acm@uco Metro Music Fest For the last six years the students have closed out their school year with a music festival in Bricktown. Last year the event attracted more than 15,000 spectators to stages all around the riverwalk. For the students the Metro Music Festival is their best opportunity to showcase their talents and experiences at the School Of Rock. For the school, it’s a great way to attract new students and show the community what they do. For the community, the Metro Music Festival is the closest thing we have to compare with the Norman Music Festival. While not on the same scale as the Norman Music Festival, the Metro Music Festival is overflowing with a ton of talented local bands and a few National acts. It’s definitely a great way to spend an afternoon and evening in Bricktown.

LIFE HAPPENS Just like in any disease or illness: Early Prevention is key. From cancer to depression, the earlier problems are identified, the more adept we can be in treating and addressing these problems. Depression is no different. Let’s Start with the It is an illness that can many times go Man in The Mirror undetected for days, months, years, or even decades. People can live with mild depression By Chad McCoy, M.A. and function fairly well. The question I have is how much more functional could these people be if they had an early diagnosis and preventative therapy? Often people suffering with depression will be conned into maladaptive thoughts that denigrate their own self-worth and selfesteem. Depression’s a Smooth Criminal. This unwanted illness changes us both mentally and physically to the point that it can get really Bad. We don’t view ourselves as the Dapper Dan we once knew, or the Pretty Young Thing we once were. If depression can be identified at an early enough stage, we as professionals can challenge these negative, maladaptive thoughts, behaviors, and perceptions. An often common maladaptive thinking error is polarization of thoughts. Many times this will sound something like, “I’m either all good or all bad,” or an individual sees events as either safe or dangerous, never in between. This Black or White thinking leads to a person changing their behavior to adapt to their negative thinking patterns. This style of avoidance reinforces these missteps of thinking and increases the risk that these thoughts will happen habitually. The cyclical nature of depression can just make you want to Scream! This is why prevention is important. Early intervention increases the likelihood of a positive prognosis for many individuals who suffer from depression. thought processes and inform them that I, too, have many of the same thinking errors they experience. This normalizes their misguided thinking and helps individuals realize, “You Are Not Alone,” and that everyone has these thoughts. It’s a common misperception that we’re the only ones that feel this way; but guess what? We’re not. It’s almost Human Nature to have these thinking errors. Some just have more tools at their disposal to combat them. Another point of early intervention is changing our behaviors so that we do not withdraw from others and isolate ourselves. This can often be seen as wanting more Privacy, but this is actually just a way for a depressed person to be alone with their thoughts; which are often illogical in nature. This is It! If you’re a person who struggles with your own depression or you know somebody who does, please seek, or urge them to seek preventative services. I’m often reminded of my own need to seek prevention when it comes to both my own mental and physical health. Knowing that biologically I struggle with high blood pressure gives me an advantage in treatment, and increases my likelihood of a positive outcome.
