AROUND EDMOND Since our last issue, something that has caused me to pause is the sudden push for cold high point beer brought up in a bill last month in the state senate by a freshman senator. This is great for those who are looking for convenience, and that is how it was originally posed to consumers - as simply an issue of convenience. Why do I care and why should you care? Simply because our state’s constitution states that wine stores and liquor stores cannot own more than one store per owner, or two if they have a spouse. The business owners would not be able to compete with grocery stores and big chains to carry cold high point beer and wine. This industry in Oklahoma is controlled by the state and the legislature is claiming the wholesaler’s are a monopoly, but that isn’t true, because they are set up specifically the way the legislator’s set up this industry’s business model in the constitution. Why you should care is just this. This industry in Oklahoma actually cares about the specialized products it brings into Oklahoma, and they take great care in their craft to make sure Oklahoman’s have a varied and delicious selection, from mass produced items to rare vints. They also make sure to take care of Oklahoma craft beer brewers along with bringing in new and exciting brands from across the globe. Walmart or Costco wouldn’t do this. As well, these business owner’s employ specially trained employee’s and bring in employee’s to train within the industry, and they pay them a great wage, pay for insurance and offer other benefits. If these employee’s that live in our area lose their jobs, due to their employer’s inability to compete with Walmart, because the state constitution won’t let them, that appears to be restraint of trade, without changing the constitution. Washington State allowed this & 60% of wine stores went out of business. Can you
imagine having state senator’s that don’t know much about your trade not allowing you to compete? That is a scary proposition solely based on acquiring the convenience of buying cold high point beer at Walmart. Another problem that no one has seemed to consider while passing this bill on a fast track, is under age alcohol purchases. Yes it happens. When it happens at Walmart, Walmart receives a fine. When it happens at a wine or liquor store, it’s a felony. Any thinking person out there knows kids will try alcohol. If Walmart is able to sell high point beer, wine and spirits, do you really think they will care if they sell to minors with small fines to pay? Highly doubtful. This causes a new issue of alcohol being easier to acquire from a cashier at any of the Walmart’s around Edmond, Deer Creek or any other town locally, this will cause an upswing of teens having and taking advantage of easier access to alcohol and thus causing our police department to have to deal with this as an increasing problem. Is this likely? Highly probable. And, teen alcohol abuse isn’t just a lower socio economic problem, and it doesn’t discriminate between “good & bad families”, making it a community issue worth thinking about. Besides this social issue, I guarantee if you are in need of a specialty wine for your next event or function, Walmart will not have anyone to help you or have special ordering available, much less a sommelier on staff. And you will be relegated to purchasing, at Walmart and eventually at Costco, whatever mass produced mediocre wine their buyer in another state mass ordered. And, if you’ve never been to a Costco, as so many are trying to invite to Norman, I used to be a member in California. It’s exactly like Sam’s Club. Once our kids grew out of diapers, it didn’t make sense to continue our membership, because how much in bulk (unless you have more than
two kids) do you really need, as bulk prices aren’t usually cheaper. My point is, why put business owner’s out of business, cause them to cut benefits to their current employees just to make cold high point beer and mediocre wine available in Walmart? And what, if any, legal safeguards i.e. criminal charges to cashiers or Walmart management, will be in place to make sure it doesn’t make alcohol purchases easier for Edmond and surrounding area teens to acquire? Just some thoughts and I am just hoping these lawmakers actually care about the unintended consequences of creating and passing a bill that could potentially hurt the kids in our communities. As far as Walmart having lower prices, not going to be the case, the little amount of alcohol actually sold in the state is so low it will always cause our prices to be higher. Look for more on this issue facing small business owners next month. I just hope that the community will see that convenience of chilled high point beer in Walmart could have long lasting negative community effects without benefiting anyone in our community at all. I know for a fact that there will be plenty who disagree, but hey, that is what’s so great about America, right? In this issue we’ve talked with local business owner Anne McCarthy of Emory Anne Interiors about her locally owned business and what events she has going on this summer, Citizen’s Bank of Edmond President Jill Castilla about the positive impact Heard on Heard is having on our community, I have a great patio project that was really fun and based on a lone Pinterest picture that had no instructions but lots of function for the upcoming summer months, and event coverage from Heard On Heard and the Edmond Arts Festival! Until next month, I’ll see you around Edmond! Sherri

CITY BUZZ This year, Mother Nature was kind
to the Edmond Arts Festival. With temperatures in the high 70’s and 80’s, everyone was able to enjoy a relaxing time viewing the paintings, sculptures and listening to the music we’ve all come to love about this event over the years. However, this year, we found some new favorites and they showed that creativity is alive and well amongst the art scene, as shown here! We’d like to thank DEBA and the City of Edmond for making this fun and relaxing event possible every year, and for adding some new artists, food and music to the lineup! If you are new to Edmond, always plan your first weekend in May around this wonderful event.

Locally Owned
Anne McCarthy of Emory Anne Interiors How long have you been involved in the retail business? About 11 years in OK, 8+ in Virginia. Plus my mom owned a store in Mississippi, so I guess retail is just in my blood. What types of shops have you owned in the past? I owned a store much like Emory Anne interiors when we lived in Chesapeake, VA How long have you been an interior designer? About 12 years. I was actually an art major with a strong interest in design. People kept asking me to decorate their homes and my design business just happened. It’s a huge part of my business today. The products you carry at Emory Anne Interiors are very eclectic, fun and trendy, where do you derive your style at the store from? We travel to markets all over the US and sometimes abroad to stay on top of trends, colors and furniture introductions. I usually go to about six markets a year.
Other than the Dallas Market, what other markets around the world do you bring products back to Edmond from? Highpoint, Atlanta, Paris and India. Where does your knack for trendsetting come from? Besides markets, I tend to stay current by reading home decor magazines and I have several favorite designers that u follow on social media. Pinterest and Houzz are good sources. How does someone go about contacting you for interior design services, and do you help with full service only? We can do as much or as little as a customer likes. Usually we start with a one hour consultation in their home to get an idea of what they need and the direction they want to go. Those interested can call our store at 405-753-4466 to get on our schedule and find out more detailed information. Does your store offer delivery? Yes, we offer local delivery. Do you get involved with the community, and if so, tell us about it?
I’ve been involved with the American Cancer Society for a number of years. My latest project was decorating the Hope House which benefits the Hooe Center in Edmond. What do you most want Edmond residents to know about Emory Anne Interiors? That we are a full service retail store. Everything on the floor is sold as shown, but we also offer custom upholstery, fabric by the yard, window treatments and special order rugs. And, we are local! Close to home, easy to get to and plenty of parking. We are starting a new monthly event called Neighborhood Nights. Each month, we will invite a different neighborhood into the store for a special event tailored around their interest. It could be anything from a wine tasting to a flower arranging demonstration. Anyone interested in getting their neighborhood on the calendar, call the store at 405-753-4466 to discuss ideas and times. We want you to get to know your neighbors while we get to know you.

Everything You Wanted To Know About “Heard on Hurd” A Q&A With Jill Castilla of Citizens Bank
Why did Citizens Bank start Heard On Hurd? Citizens Bank of Edmond has been “building community” in Edmond since we started in Downtown Edmond in 1901. Heard On Hurd is a continuation of our tradition of celebrating all things local. In 2013, we made a commitment to reinvest substantially in Downtown Edmond, returning to our roots. Heard on Hurd showcases the small businesses that differentiate Edmond from other suburbs and provides some urban flair to our historic Downtown Edmond. The combination of the delicious and inventive food trucks, talented musicians, unique local retailers and supportive neighbors, friends and merchants is a spectacular display of what community means. What was the vision behind Heard On Hurd in 2014? Our vision was simply to foster an event where the metro’s families and friends could experience amazing food, enjoy homegrown musical talent and discover great finds at local retailers. A great party is an easy way to bring our community together! Our hope is not only that the metro will enjoy Heard On Hurd each month, but will come back to our neighborhood to explore Downtown Edmond even more. After 4 events, do you see the community responding positively to Heard On Hurd? The community response has been overwhelmingly positive! Social media provides us with immediate feedback and we love the statements like, “Welcome to Downtown Edmond 2.0”, “Feeding the soul of our community” and “can’t wait until next month.” Catching up with old friends and meeting new ones are essential to the strength of a community’s bonds and we’re honored to provide an avenue to make that happen. What would you estimate the average attendance numbers are for the last 4 events? We are so grateful that Edmond and
edmondactive.com 13
Edmond Events
the OKC metro have embraced Heard on Hurd. While we haven’t been focused on the attendance, we regularly connect to more than 4,000 unique Wifi devices. We conservatively estimated attendance at more than 7,500 for the last two events. More importantly, our merchants, food trucks and dancing crowd have consistently exceeded our expectations. Even with the threat of severe storms, the community synergy has been spectacular at every event. The success of Heard on Hurd demonstrates how the Edmond community loves to come together. Has there been a positive effect on the downtown Edmond brick and mortar businesses? There’s no doubt businesses throughout downtown are benefiting from Heard On Hurd. Many of the shops stayed open later after our first Heard On Hurd because they saw attendees strolling up and down Broadway. Even with the numerous food trucks, our downtown restaurants and pubs
have had record sales on event nights. It’s extremely important to us that this is a “win” for our Downtown merchants and we’re very grateful for their support of our event. Ultimately, we hope that the success of Heard on Hurd will encourage more retailers and restaurants to make Downtown Edmond their permanent home. How are the downtown Edmond businesses getting involved? Downtown Edmond businesses are staying open later to cater to the Heard On Hurd crowd, or setting up pop-up shops at the festival. We’ve also worked closely with DEBA to ensure that the event is a compliment to the efforts to keep Downtown Edmond a very special place. Our community’s small business owners have provided us great feedback, volunteered in planning and proactively communicated with us the night of the event. Although Citizens Bank of Edmond is curating the event, the stars
are Downtown Edmond and the small businesses in our community. The more we innovate and the more we find new offerings, the more successful Heard On Hurd and, ultimately, Edmond small business will be. What is the process for choosing bands, and is there special criteria that need to be met to be chosen? We want to shine a spotlight on the best local talent in Edmond and from across Oklahoma. Our premium stage has hosted acts ranging from rock to blues and soul to modern folk—and some acts that don’t fit neatly into one genre. Offering a range of musical styles at Heard On Hurd helps draw diverse crowd to Downtown Edmond. We’ve been working with Downtown Edmond business owner, Matt Stansberry, and Graham Colton to identify acts for Heard On Hurd. There’s really no special criteria other than to be fun, entertaining and family-friendly. And the same, what is the process and
14 edmondactive.com
criteria for choosing the food trucks and retailers in the pop-up area? Diversity is also very important in our Heard On Hurd food truck and popup shop selection. We work with the local food truck association to schedule the food trucks, and have more demand for food truck and pop-up shop space than we can meet each month as word spreads about Heard On Hurd’s success. It’s important not to oversaturate with offerings – we want those participating to have great sales that will encourage them the return. The pop-up shops are locallyowned small business that either are truly start-up companies or have a local brick and mortar location. Heard On Hurd provides these small businesses with what they need most – exposure and access to potential customers. We want our vendors to have the same community building spirit that drives Heard on Hurd. Who, at Citizens Bank of Edmond, is involved with making Heard On Hurd
happen each month? There is so much that goes into making each Heard On Hurd a success that it really takes everyone at Citizens Bank of Edmond pitching in and helping out. Our team and Board of Directors bought into my wild vision right from its inception. Bridget Jaime, our vice president of communications, does a great job organizing Heard On Hurd and everyone at the bank helps with the set up, logistics, clean up, and anything else that needs doing. What can residents look forward to each month during the summer and fall with Heard On Hurd? We’ve been overwhelmed by the tremendous support from our community. From church sermons to social media, Heard On Hurd’s community building approach has engaged our community and we are committed to keeping it relevant while staying true to that approach. While we don’t have expectations for growth,
the positive acceptance will likely demand the addition of new food trucks, popup shops and more space. We love the organic transformations that have taken place without our prior planning – our community is really making Heard on Hurd special. What do you want Edmond residents to know about Heard On Hurd? The next Heard On Hurd is May 16 from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. and everyone should come join the fun. Heard On Hurd is free and all ages are welcome. It’s always the third Saturday of the month, now through October at the corner of Broadway and Hurd, so mark your calendars now. At Citizens Bank of Edmond, we love bringing our community together by throwing this celebration. We hope everyone can make it to a few Heard On Hurd festivals this season - it’s a great way to enjoy a beautiful evening with family, friends and neighbors! If you haven’t made it yet, this is your invitation.

My Yard This month, I’m giving Heather Popowsky a break from this space, as she is in full landscape mode right now, but check back with her in the next issue for great tips for summer gardening in Oklahoma’s challenging summer months. This month, a lone Pinterest photo caught my eye, and of course it didn’t have instructions! It was identical to this but had a glass hurricane covering the candle. This project was fun, in that it creates a full sun or shade potted planting that can be used for instant ambiance for the early summer porch season! This project cost approximately $30 total.
I started by choosing a pot that was size appropriate for the space it would occupy, and in choosing the plantings, I made sure to pay attention to whether the plants would sit in full sun, full shade or a combination. Then I found a great taller glass container and river rocks and placed it in the center of the plants. And to finish, just place a votive candle in the center container situated in the rocks. This is a great little project for upcoming outdoor celebrations or just relaxing time on your patio.
