CITY BUZZ Rain, Rain, Go Away...We’ve Had Enough All that really can be said about these photos are ... enough. This is the wettest month on record for the state of Oklahoma, and all I can say is wait until July, on Facebook. The conversation will then turn to the amount of and size of the mosquitoes. And to those who received damage to their property or homes, our thoughts and prayers go out to you as this mess is hard to get a handle on when it just keeps coming.

Touch The Clouds The sculpture, “Touch the Clouds,” depicts a nineteenth century Miniconjou Chief who fought alongside Crazy Horse at the Battle of Little Big Horn. On February 22, 1998, artist, Dave McGary installed the 30-foot tall, 15-foot wide monument weighing over ten tons at the Houston Astrodome. The City of Edmond purchased the monument in 2014 for $50.000 as part of their Public Arts project. You can see the statue near the entrance of UCO on Second Street.
REACTION Edmond Wine Shop’s Vance Gregory Responds to Proposed Senate Bill 383 Initially, Senate Bill 383 addressed refrigeration of strong beer in retail liquor stores. Keeping perishable beer cold makes sense to me and is pro-consumer. But that simple plan is anything but simple now. Proposed by Sen. Stephanie Bice, R-Oklahoma City, and co-authored by Sen. Clark Jolley, R-Edmond, SB 383 would now allow the following: 3.2 beer will be discontinued in favor of single-strength beer (strong beer), which will be available in retail package stores, convenience stores and grocery stores across Oklahoma. Any holder of a current 3.2 beer license will be able to sell strong beer and wine. Corporations, largely based out of state, would thereby gain a windfall of additional revenue from wine sales at the expense of local merchants. That portion of the bill should be struck. Allowing singlestrength beer would entice craft brewers not presently represented here to enter our market, giving consumers more product choice and should be pursued. Every licensed Oklahoma liquor retailer is “headquartered” in this state. There is no better example of a local business than our 100 percent locally owned retail wine and spirit stores. Our incomes and the taxes they produce stay right here in Oklahoma. Liquor retailers own houses here, pay rent, contribute to local charities and hire employees whose incomes and taxes stay in Oklahoma. With such enormous budget challenges facing our state, elected officials should carefully consider the negative revenue impact of this legislation. Vance D. Gregory Jr., Owner Of Edmond Wine Shop

This summer, I will be highlighting different boutiques in Edmond to show what new trends are available this summer. This month, I am featuring Emory Anne Interiors. Anne is starting to receive the amazing pieces she hand picked while out at market this last winter and spring. Be sure to stop by often, as Anne is known to have impromptu sales, warehouse sales and more. Her sales are outstanding! This year appears to include a lot of neutrals with bold vibrant colors and I personally love this. As well, the furniture is inspiring especially the hand crafted pieces, like the couch above. Stop by to check out the newest items, be inspired for the summer by the numerous vignettes, and I promise you won’t leave this boutique on 33rd & Bristol without a smile on your face.

Moni’s Pizza and Pasta is located on May Ave. just across from Rose Creek Estates, south of 178th Street. It is a modest and comfortable Italian restaraunt co owned by John and Chef Rachel Foster, and the quality of the food is top shelf. We stopped in on a Friday evening about 6 ish, and were able to acquire the last open table before there was a line almost out the door. We ordered Shrimp Alfredo, and the sauce this evening was better than outstanding, with a light fluffy buttery taste. When you stop in to this darling restaraunt, John will stop
by your table and visit. This is a tradition, and was appreciated by myself and my husband, as this is a rare experience these days. The appetizers were terrific, the entree came with a salad and rolls, and just about everything was made fresh. Along with an amazing and very moderately priced wine list, the friendly service and food will have us return soon to this terrific restaraunt. *Family Friendly *Dinner pricing $9.95 to $16.95 *Wine and Craft Beer available *Booths and tables with ability to seat two to a large group. Great atmosphere, highly recommend.

Life Happens Hey. Remember that societal conversation we never had about whether kids should be given that exact same technology as their parents simply because they all want it? Well, we really ought to revisit that discussion again for the first time. The first IPhone was released in June of By Quinton Ellis 2007. I remind you of this in order to provide some perspective. In May of 2006, no one had a smart phone. Eight years later you are the meanest parent on the block if you deny one to your 10-year-old. That is a massive transition, and one that just sort of happened. As a society, we didn’t give much thought to the propriety of, or consequences that may arise from, installing these devices in our children’s lives. We didn’t even have a quick talk about what the smartphone might mean for us as adults. This is not a rant against technology. The technology is awesome- it’s humans that are the problem. The potential for misuse of these devices by adults is enormous. For teenagers, take the last sentence, substitute teens for adults, and delete “potential for”. Again we return to the problem of young people and their cognitive underdevelopment. Poor impulse control and emotional instability combined with an unlimited data plan (or wor$e, a limited one) create a number of seriously uncomfortable problems that we’re all happy to avoid talking about. I’m not going to get into any of it here, either. You don’t want to read about your boys getting an incredibly warped view of what sexuality is by staring at All the Porn Ever, and you certainly don’t want to hear that your daughters are sending naked pictures of themselves to boys (and thereby everyone else, sadly) because the boys like and respect them enough to ask repeatedly for nudes. I’m not going to write
Teens and Smartphones
about things like that because I don’t want to bum you out. But we should acknowledge that there are at least some minor drawbacks to equipping our kids with smartphones. I’m not suggesting that teens shouldn’t have them at all (well…) but we need to do a better job of regulating their usage. We need to understand the Internet is something that accesses your kids, not the other way around. It was a tremendous influence on young people even when it could only access your kids from the family computer in the non-private living room. As adults, we were all afforded the luxury of learning to live most of our lives without all the conveniences and distractions of a smartphone. You likely wouldn’t be the person you are today if you had. Social Media alone is reason enough to toss your teen’s smartphone into an I-Phurnace. I can’t think of a single positive example of its use by my clients that couldn’t easily have been accomplished using more traditional methods of communication. It’s all negative. And it is screwing up our kids. The guilt for this lay at our own feet, which should be in view- just beyond the smartphone we’re all staring at. My proposal is that, with limited exceptions, all teens maintaining a 3.0 or above GPA can keep their smartphones. Everyone else gets a Jitterbug. Sure, your underachieving kids will go full-scale Prom Scene Carrie on you for a couple of days. Around day three the fires will die out and your child will emerge phoenixlike from the ashes in the form of a young person you no longer wish to repeatedly bodyslam. If they still insist on giving you grief, advise them to call the ACLU. On a landline. Because you’re taking the Jitterbug.
