CITY BUZZ EDMOND’S CULTURAL DISTRICT

We live in an amazing city that is concerned about offering diversity and culture to all Edmond citizens and visitors to enjoy. Did you know that Edmond has our own Cultural District? We all travel through it daily, and in learning about the connection, I found a few welcome surprises, that after 10 years as a resident, I had no idea existed! Here is a quick guide of our city’s Cultural District: DOWNTOWN EDMOND COMMUNITY CENTER 28 E MAIN ST. IN DOWNTOWN EDMOND The Downtown Edmond Community Center is a public facility that offers meeting rooms, banquet hall, and is the home to the Edmond Arts and Humanities Council. EDMOND PUBLIC LIBRARY AT 10 N. BOULEVARD Edmond’s Public Library is the busiest of the Metropolitan Library System and annually circulates over one million books and other materials! Shannon Miller Park is located in Downtown Edmond at Main and Jackson

which honors Edmond native Olympic Gymnast and seven time Olympic medalist Shannon Miller with a beautiful bronze statue of the Olympian. This park is a terrific public space, that host’s our community’s Christmas Tree and a terrific Christmas light display every year. Mitchell Hall at the corner of 1st and University on the campus of UCO, which has been the performing arts venue for UCO since 1926. Old North, on University, was the very first building at UCO which first opened for classes in 1893. UCO MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES There are several art galleries located at UCO, specifically the Central Museum of Art and Design which is located in the art building, the Donna Nigh Gallery located in the Nigh University Center, which features changing exhibits, and the Max Chambers Gallery which is housed in the library. DOWNTOWN EDMOND ON BROADWAY Downtown Edmond is home to the Dean Livey Gallery, Paint Your Art Out, dining and community events like Heard on Hurd, the Edmond Arts Festival, LibertyFest Parade, the Edmond Electric Lights Christmas Parade and the Festival Marketplace where you can visit the Farmers Market from April through

October. EDMOND’S PUBLIC ART The Cultural District has many pieces of public sculpture, which many can be viewed directly in Downtown Edmond. Each year, the Edmond Visual Arts Commission continues to add new pieces yearly, and offers a separate brochure. FINE ARTS INSTITUTE OF EDMOND AT 1400 S. BROADWAY The Fine Arts Institute of Edmond is a non profit organization that has trained faculty members that offer educational and cultural opportunities in the visual and performing arts. UCO JAZZ LAB AT 5TH & LITTLER The UCO Jazz Lab is an entertainment venue with a relaxed atmosphere styled after Jazz clubs in New Orleans, and they feature live entertainment, food and beverages. EDMOND HISTORICAL SOCIETY MUSEUM AT 5TH & BOULEVARD The museum is located within the former Armory of the 179th infantry, 45th Division of the Oklahoma National Guard, next to Stephenson Park. You’ll find some really interesting exhibits, artifacts and information about all things Edmond, from prehistoric times to the present, and on occasion you’ll find some fantastic traveling exhibits.

William Shatner arrived in Edmond during a surprise visit on his trip through Route 66, which he was doing to first, promote American Legion scholarships, and second, as a stop to interview Vetran’s along Route 66 for a documentary he is narrating. Mayor Lamb gave Mr. Shatner a proclamation and hundreds of residents showed up to get a glimpse of the Star Trek star.

Edmond Historical Society Museum Offers Glimpse Into Edmond’s First Residents By Sherri Hultner

If you are new to Edmond, and have questions about some of Edmond’s rich history, or are just looking to connect with Edmond’s roots, the Edmond Historical Society Museum at 431 S. Boulevard, and across from Café 501, is a great place to visit. After my family and I moved to Edmond 10 years ago, we found ourselves constantly wondering about certain landmarks in town, wondering about stories we had heard about certain buildings and homes and found ourselves too busy to ever delve into visiting the Edmond Historical Society Museum. That ended this summer, as we took a tour of the museum for the first time. It was an enjoyable visit that had us completely gripped with the stories of the first homesteader’s that acquired land by way of the land rush. Their experience makes me wonder how many of us in the 21st century would have endured such harsh experiences in an effort to stake a claim to a piece of land to call home. My interest in visiting this treasure within our city limits was peaked by a 10 minute online video about the Rodkey Family (hint: Rodkey Mill on 2nd Street) that was written and edited by Dwight Polson. With a

08 edmondactive.com

edmondactive.com 09

E d m o n d Historical Society Museum healthy curiosity for the Rodkey Flour Mill we all pass daily, and that our family first noticed and wondered about on our first visit to Edmond 10 years ago, I decided to invest the 10 minutes to watch this amazing video. The first thing about this video that caught my attention, was the immediate entertainment value that kept my attention, and the humor I felt in that the Rodkey boys weren’t perfect angels (crazy how parenting annotations and comparisons can bridge a century!), and that Mr. & Mrs. Rodkey were very forward thinking in their attempts to connect our community, even for our time. I don’t want to present a spoiler for this terrific video, as I believe this may be one of the best video’s explaining some of our city’s history that I’ve seen, so visit Youtube.com/CityOfEdmond and click on the Roots of Edmond 03: The Rodkey Family video, I promise you won’t be disappointed! If you are interested in discovering Edmond’s roots, I can’t describe how very interesting the artifacts, photos and descriptions of up and coming Edmond found at the Edmond Historical Society Museum are, and it gives great insight into our community and its struggle to become the city we now live in. The museum just celebrated their 30th Birthday this June, and we hope to see them celebrating another 30 years! To visit the museum at 431 S. Boulevard, to become a member, or to volunteer, they are open Tuesdays through Friday: 10 am to 5 pm and Saturdays 1-4 pm. You can visit online at EdmondHistory.org. If you have questions, you can always call at 405-340-0078.

LibertyFest Cardboard Boat Regatta

This year, Mother Nature did not seem to be cooperating prior to the 6/27/15 Cardboard Boat Regatta, as Edmond saw record rainfall and Lake Arcadia quickly became over capacity. However, on race day, the temperatures were mild, the breeze was perfect and the crowd was as fun and crazy as ever! I know a lot of people in town that are very curious about this event and due to lack of knowledge or apprehension of what to expect from a Cardboard Boat Regatta, they do not enter. We are challenging all of you to read the rules at EdmondParks.com and get started on your plans for 2016! Who knows? Perhaps your amazing waterproof creation will grace next years 7th Issue of Edmond Active Magazine (this is a call out to all Edmond business owners to enter the corporate division for a chance to have possession of the corporate traveling trophy!) The first claimed first race argues that it started this phenomenon in 1974 at Southern Illinois University, and now currently claims over 1,500 participants and over 100,000 spectators from across the US. The very first race, however, actually happened in 1962, as a Design College Senior project. Davis Partt gave the seniors in the Design Department a problem to solve called the Water Transport Problem. The seniors were required to demonstrate their solutions using the following requirements: To provide water transportation for

12

edmondactive.com

1 person (yourself) for 100 feet, your clothing must remain dry, corrugated cardboard must be used as basic material and any other material considered necessary. According to Mr. Partt, “There were much more elaborate looking boats than the one I offered as a solution. (One had four “hulls,” beautifully shaped. It sure looked like a boat, but sank almost immediately upon hitting the water.)” Mike Thompson won the Adult 1 & 2 man category, with his red invention called The Flash. He told me that instead of using any duct tape at all, he decided to use 1 gallon of approved wood glue to adhere and completely seal his boat, and then completed the seal with paint. The youth category was alive and well this year and had some terrific competition! The Shark came in second and was one of the most creative in design we saw in this year’s competition at Lake Arcadia. All in all, this year’s 7th Annual Cardboard Boat Regatta was a lot of fun, and a terrific LibertyFest event tradition! To find out what you’ll need and how to prepare for the 2016 8th Annual Cardboard Boat Regatta, visit EdmondParks.com or call Diane Self at 405-359-4630.

LibertyFest Car Show

This year marked the 15th Anniversary of the Edmond LibertyFest Car Show held at Hafer Park. And by all accounts this years show was the biggest and best in recent memory. In the years we have been attending the Car Show we have never seen so many cars and spectators. It was definitely a huge git this year. The LibertyFest Car Show never dissapoints the gearheads in our community. It has a little bit of everything a car nut could want. This year there was a great seletion of Vintage cars, Classic cars, Muscle cars, European Sports cars, Hot Rods and Rat Rods. All told there were at least a couple million dollars worth of polished and chromed machinery on hand. There was even a rare 23-window VW Bus...sweet! If you have never been to the LibertyFest Car Show you’re really missing out on one of Edmond’s coolest events. There’s definitely something there for the whole family.

Local Flavor Strawberry Margarita Jello Shots (Can be made as a fun non alcoholic treat!) 1 cup Pure Agave Silver Tequila 3/4 cup Cointreau Strawberry Jello Mix Fresh Strawberries 1 Lime Sugar for rimming Strawberries Cut bottoms of strawberries slightly so they stand. Be careful not to cut to far up to avoid creating a hole. Heat and mix Strawberry Jello Mix, then mix in tequila and cointreau. Pour into fresh strawberries that have had the cores removed (be careful not to go to deep to cause a hole at the bottom). After about 3 hours setting in the refridgerator or before jello has fully set, take strawberries out and rim in sugar, and place a thin slice or wedge of lime inside jello. For non alcoholic recipe, omit tequila and coitreau, and this is a really fun and tasty treat for our hottest summer months!

Life Happens In The Good Ol’ Summertime By Belinda Crosier, LPC, LADC

Oh, those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer! They’re almost here, & with them, come expectations by parents & children about what those days will render. Sometimes those expectations don’t align very closely at all, nor are they likely to be spoken aloud, which leads eventually to surprising realizations by all parties. It’s safe to say most adolescents expect that very description to come to fruition---lazy, hazy & yes, even crazy, while parents usually expect – or at least hope – to see their kids being slightly more productive. One way to navigate this more smoothly is to have a family meeting ASAP after the last school bell rings & make the expectations clear. This will probably be met with fewer groans & rolled eyes if parents can acknowledge that they’re willing for their kids to have some fun while school is out. That being said, now to the unpleasantness of establishing summer rules about…….(yuck!) chores. There are several ways to look at this ageold source of grumbles; however, I personally feel that chores are simply preparation for the real world & that all kids should have chores all the time, but not everyone in Edmond, America concurs. The question is, do the kids take on extra chores in the summer? It’s seems reasonable, especially if both parents have jobs outside the home, that the people in the house with the most spare time on their hands, could take on an extra task or two without risking enslavement. Factor in the expense of increased activities kids expect to participate in & those additional chores can be seen as a means of earning their fun, which is how the real works for most of us. Then there’s the sticky wicket of (yuck, again!) curfew. Adolescents, in particular, seem to operate under the belief that everyone in the free world can stay up half the night & sleep half the day, wreaking havoc on the sleep schedules of their parents. It is not unreasonable to expect – or demand – that your children be –

and stay – in the house after a designated hour of your choosing. Explaining that the roof over their heads and the latest electronic gadget in their hands at that moment exist as a result of the adults in the household being able to wake up & get to their appointed responsibilities five to seven days a week, might make it a little more palatable to suggest that if their nighttime antics prevent that from happening, they will be prevented from enjoying those luxuries. It’s not incomprehensible that parents may have to employ some innovative methods for insuring their kiddos stay tucked in the house beyond the established bewitching hour. Having been there & done that myself, I understand this will elicit many complaints, and certain testing of the limits & consequences. If these rules have been sufficiently explained from the get-go, the broken record technique (i.e., “The rule is…………..” as many as times as needed) will suffice to restate the expectation without being drawn into any lengthy debate about the perceived fairness of these rules. Having a pre-thought out response to complaints/accusations such as, “Thank you for your thoughts on that,” or a simple, “Could be,” with a little smile, lets your child know you’ve heard their protest but you’re not swayed by it. The truly persistent youngster may well intensify the attack, but you, as the just-aspersistent parent, continue to mindlessly repeat the broken record statement. The ‘mindless’, or automatic response will help you stay detached, and by not feeling you need to defend your stance, it’s more likely you’ll avoid taking the resistance as a personal affront and thereby sidestep attack/counter-attack, escalating interactions with your child. Have a great summer! Edmond Family Counseling is here to support you and your family. Please support us with your donation so everyone has access to mental health care. www.edmondfamily.org
