AROUND EDMOND It’s September and most of us are looking forward to Fall Festivals, Trick or Treating, Tailgating and Holiday Open Houses. I for one, am not ready to let a little more summer in. In this issue, I have discovered a part of Edmond that is quite fantastic. In our second issue this year, we brought you information on the 612 School in the Paseo District, a school teaching sustainability. Low and behold, after talking to one of our readers at Twitter, I discovered Providence Farms, on Western just North of Waterloo, in North Edmond. The concept is unique, and a lot of farmers locally and land owners think Chris Webster’s concept is crazy. At Providence Farms, the goal is to educate people, bring them information on organic farming with classes, and to help set up like farms and gardens around the metro. And if you stop by the farm, all that you purchase is based on a “pay what you can” scale” which is a first that we know of, after reasearching, within the Metro’s city limits. Chris Webster says that this concept isn’t new and it’s been working out very well, giving access to fresh organic food to everyone, not just those who are well off. And, he never has waste on the Wedsnesday’s and Saturdays he is open. At all. Be sure to follow Providence Farms on Facebook. It’s a popular concept in the community and within the first 2 months after setting up their page, they had over 2,300 local residents following! For the fall months, you can expect lots of greens, lettuces, broccoli and more, and keep your eye out for an early season next spring, as Chris had a huge greenhouse donated to the farm. For those who are new to Edmond, Edmond hosts a weekly Farmers Market in Downtown every Sat. until Oct. You will find tomatoes, lettuces, jellies, soaps, pasta and more, along with hand made items and seasonal flowers. It runs from 8 am to 1 pm, and is a great wasy to spend a Saturday. In this month’s Local Flavor, we feature the fresh hand prepared crock pot meals made by Millie Shores at Millie’s Table Catering and More, located at Danforth and Santa Fe, next to Eileen’s Cookies. Featured is Millie’s Buffalo Chicen Pasta, which is a huge favorite with local residents! In Life Happens, the staff at Edmond Family Counseling speak on procrastinating. I think this subject speaks for all of us at one point or another in our lives. One of my goals for 2015 is to discontinue this habit, and in doing so, it’s cleared up much space for new projects. For more information, visit EdmondFamilyCounseling.org or give them a call at 405-341-3554, and follow them at Facebook, too. If you have tweens and are new to Edmond, have your kids download the BeEdmond app ~ as it offers terrific resources for our communities kids! And lastly, we have a little preview of our supporters fall items in a fun photo feature called “What’s in Store!” I hope you enjoy it as much as I did shooting the photos! I just want to thank all of you for reading this issue, and keep your eye out for more shopping previews for the holidays, and also be sure to keep up daily at Instagram, Facebook and Twitter at @EdmondActive and at EdmondActive.com with Around Edmond! Until the next issue, I’ll see you around Edmond! ~ Sherri

This July I discovered a local secret spot for fresh organic produce! Open Wednesday’s and Saturday’s 9-1 pm in North Edmond, this farm is one for the entire community. For those who are new to Edmond, keep your eye out for the weekly Farmers Market in Downtown Edmond every Sat. until October 31. You will find tomatoes, lettuces, peppers, melons, cucumbers, local wineries, fresh eggs, goat cheese, breads, corn, jellies, soaps, pasta and more, along with hand made items and seasonal flowers. It runs from 8 am to 1 pm, and is a great wasy to spend a Saturday. You’ll find farmers from all over the state, as well as local artisans, and woodworkers. My personal favorites, this year, were Tall Girl Pasta, amazing salsa, and some of the best peaches I have personally ever tasted. Just west of Broadway, on 1st Street, in Downtown Edmond.

405 R/C RACEWAY & HOBBIES Pole Positon Raceway, located at 36th & May in OKC, and owned by partner and Edmond Resident and Race Dad, Greg Slaton, has a new addition that is fun for everyone of all ages. Mid July, 405 R/C Raceway and Hobbies opened inside of the Pole Position Raceway OKC and is only the 2nd indoor RC racetrack paired with an indoor karting
track in the nation. I had a chance to speak to Gary O’Brien, the RC Track’s owner and manager, and he said so far, OKC is responding really well. In the first 6 weeks, many have started to show an interest in their Saturday night races, and their plans are to start up a series this October with another track in Kansas.
Thier facility offers racing for all ages and skill levels, and they have a parts counter where you can find Gary! Their hours are 11 am to 9 pm Mondays through Thursdays, 11 am to Midnight Fridays and Saturdays and 11 am to 7 pm on Sundays. If you have more questions, you can call 405-600-6442.

Life Happens Being a Chronic Procrastinator By Sheila Stinnett
As the last days of summer are upon us, I would like to discuss a behavior which continually haunts me, is unproductive and generally just makes me feel bad, my urge to procrastinate. When I glanced at my refrigerator this morning, I saw plastered to its front, my ambitious list of summer “to do projects”. This list was obviously made in the spring when I was thinking warmer weather would be a key component in my transformation to a DIY super hero. With my flower beds in shambles, my garage a disaster area, and my windows waiting for a fairy godmother to magically make the fabric on my dining room table turn into curtains, I am not puzzled by why these projects are not finished, but more by why I couldn’t I even get started. I do know that I am not alone, as many as twenty percent of us identify ourselves as chronic procrastinators. Missing deadlines, late with bills, surrounded by unfinished projects, spouting a continual stream of excuses, procrastinators appear to be the real world version of Alice’s White Rabbit constantly muttering “I’m late, I’m late”. Looks, however, can be deceiving. Procrastination is not considered a time management issue, but rather a problem with an individual’s ability to selfregulate. Research has shown that there are three different types of procrastinators. The first type is the thrill seeker. These individuals thrive on the intense stress generated by the last second rush of finishing tasks. Second type is the avoider. Overcome with fear of failure or driven by perfectionism “avoiders” often substitute a preferred task for a nonpreferred task, looking for anything they can use as a distraction. Last are the decisionally impaired. Unable to make any final decisions, these people use ambivalence and confusion as a tool to distance or remove themselves from taking responsibility should a situation or project turn out poorly. Individuals who procrastinate often tell lies to themselves and
others causing difficulties in their relationships with family, friends and co-workers. They may experience financial problems due to the squandering of resources on supplies for projects which will never be finished. Stress caused by procrastination can result in health related issues such as insomnia, gastrointestinal problems, headaches, elevated blood pressure, and substance abuse. Procrastinating can weaken a person’s immune system causing an increase of infections. The good news is procrastinators are made, they are not born. It is a learned behavior which can be unlearned with work and support. Strategies which can be utilized to reduce procrastinating behaviors are as simple as setting realistic goals, writing out a statement of intentions, learning how to say no, working to break large tasks into smaller more manageable ones, and setting up a reward system for yourself once a task has been completed. List making can be helpful. However, once it is made it is important to continually edit the list by eliminating tasks that you never really plan on doing or by removing tasks that have been on your list longer than a year. Most importantly when estimating the amount of time you think it will take you to complete a task always increase the time by 100 percent. If procrastination is significantly impacting your health, your ability to maintain employment or engage in functional personal relationships, professional help may be needed. A highly structured cognitive behavioral therapy program seems to be most effective in assisting individuals in overcoming struggles with procrastination. As for my struggles with procrastination, unfortunately I will have to wait to address them until tomorrow as this article is due today and I must get it turned in ASAP. Edmond Family Counseling is here to support you and your family. Please support us with your donation so everyone has access to mental health care. www.edmondfamily.org
