AROUND EDMOND Can you believe how fast this year went by? The speed at which this year passed is beyond any other year for me. This year, I have written stories on people in Edmond I know, and I’ve been able to meet some fantastic new people. For me, in bringing you stories about residents and business owners in Edmond, it is meant to remind all of you, and myself, that we are all in this together as a community, and that everyone has an interesting story. As well, when I bring you items found in local shops and boutiques in Edmond, as many notice within our social networks at Christmas time, it is meant to relay the inspiration I receive at these local spots, and to underscore that the independent owners of the local businesses we have the privelege to visit in our town really are the color that makes our community unique. And this comes from someone who moved to Oklahoma, specifically Edmond, based on the large chains that were available to me as a young mom 11 years ago, second to the schools. I have since tired of these chains, my boys are grown, and I am so happy to have discovered all that is locally owned in Edmond. So, when you see me promoting a business with the hashtag #ShopEdmond, know that they are a business that really cares about connecting with every one of you, is very enthusiastic about what they do for a living, and takes enormous pride in their business, and I look forward to bringing more to you in 2016! To start the new year off right, pledge to visit one local boutique and get to know the owners personally at least once a month. Check out what they specialize in and use it to refer friends and neighbors during the year. These local business owners employ local residents, and in doing this it keeps money spent flowing through our community through pay checks as well as local sales tax that, in turn, is providing parks & recreation services, fills the potholes, and creates an even better community to live in. In this issue, we highlight the amazing parade and Mayor’s park lighting, Santa who visited Citizen’s Bank of Edmond, the first annual Oklahoma Designer Showhouse after photos, a great interview with independent coffee house Perk Place and what they do to give back daily, as well as Life Happens from Edmond Family Counseling. This week, I will be helping our senior labrador, Lucky, over the rainbow bridge at 14, and what a life he has had. The first time I met Dr. Susan Tomlinson, of the Animal Medical Center at I-35, on 2nd St., it was in 2010 on Twitter where I was begging for help at 11:30 pm due to my lab eating 3 bars of Dove soap after he discovered how to open the bathroom drawer. Apparently this should have been that last thing he did, but alas... Lucky is the sweetest dog, and since the soap incident has discovered he also likes cotton balls and QTips, too. If you are in need of a vet, give Animal Medical Center at I35 a call, they are compassionate, and appreciate the humor that our animal family member’s offer us. I hope, even if the economy downturn affected your family, that all of you had the opportunity to spend this holiday with those you love, and can make plans for the new year and have new opportunities. The last issue had our driving guide of neighborhood lights and was gone instantly in print, with 11,031 people reached on FB, with over 759 shares digitally. We hope this made the holidays fun for all of you! And again, thanks so much to all of you for reading this issue, and be sure to keep up daily at Instagram, Facebook and Twitter @EdmondActive! Here’s to a very Happy New Year in 2016! ~ Sherri

CITY BUZZ Each year you can expect an amazing time at the Mayor’s lighting of Shannon Miller Park, along with the announcing of the Christmas Essay winner’s from local elementary schools. This year was no different with one of the biggest crowds, partly due to the beautiful and mild weather in early December. One of my favorite things is knowing that the lights are set up by Electric Company employees! Thanks to all that make this such a special tradition!
Hopefully, all of you with little ones were able to head over to Citizen’s Bank of Edmond during the first weekend of December and have your tiny one’s get a photo taken by the amazing talent of Meagan, assistant at Andrea Dillingham Photography! Meagan was able to do it all this year, and she captured some fantastic moments, including those that were less enthusiastic about the right of passage, Santa was just fantastic, and I was able to see him in action granting wishes to two of the cutest twin boys who came in at the last minute. Talking to a cashier at the bank, I asked, “Seriously? You get to do this at work????” The smile on the cashier’s face said all that needed to be said. Thanks so much to Citizen’s Bank of Edmond for hosting Santa Clause, it’s possibly one of the most fun events to cover all year!

You all set a Facebook record this Christmas! Over 750 of you shared our digital Christmas Light Guide! Every print edition was picked up and this made my year! We have new additions for next year, too! At Instagram, you love your sunsets, but this sunrise in mid December was better than any sunset so far! Follow @EdmondActive!
So, it looks like Mother Nature decided to end the holidays similarly to the way it all started on Black Friday, except this time we got thunder, lightning, ice, sleet, snow, freezing rain, and two earthquakes, and ... a touch of spring just before. Here’s to hoping this is the only winter event and we get more rain than ice, and until spring, I will just keep looking at my entry stone and pansies and just imagine it’s just spring. Honestly, though, I do love the snow, just not ice or freezing rain, and anything that rips down our powerlines and trees and sends our linemen out in this dangerous weather is not welcome. Thanks to all at the City, and the Electric Company for all your service during this weather, you are all so appreciated!

Edmond Homes
Oklahoma Designer Showhouse: After Transformation This year’s inaguaral Oklahoma Designer Showhouse was held at a 4800 sq. ft. beautiful home on Red Rock Lake Road and was designed by 8 outstanding designers and firms. What the public doesn’t know about showhome’s in the metro is that they are highly political, and very restrictive on the designers. This home and this tour is the first one of its kind that fully allowed these designers 100% creative license. By visiting this showhome this year, you provided a donation of over $5,000 to the Free To Live Animal Sanctuary! This is amazing, and we love this as Free To Live is a no kill facility and adopts out all their animals! This home is approximately 5,000 sq. ft., listed for $1,295,000 and located at 5941 Red Rock Lake Road. If you are interested in a showing contact Benjamin Floyd, Broker’s Associate/Owner of 525 Realty Group at 405-285-7000 or 405641-0022

The ‘Perks’ of Giving Back Interview and photos by Trevor Hultner
Nestled in a newly-developed shopping center in South Edmond and founded in September 2014, Perk Place is a great place to get a quick pick-me-up. Coffee of all types and flavors, paninis, and breakfast burritos are especially big sellers. What makes Perk Place special is not what it’s selling, however; it’s how it’s giving back. Edmond Active spoke with Perk Place co-owner Jeff Meyer about his store’s charity work and their plans for the future. Interview edited for clarity. Edmond Active: Thank you so much for agreeing to take some time and answer a couple questions. Mostly what we’re interested in: the history of Perk Place, some of the charity work that you guys have done, what’s in store for you guys in the future. That’s what I was hoping to pick your brain about today. Jeff: Yeah, no problem. Perk Place has been around since September 2014. Natalie [Meyer, Jeff’s wife and Perk Place
co-owner] and I have been in the [restaurant] business for a long time – Natalie kind of in and out of the business, and I’ve been in it since I was fourteen. We’ve worked for large corporations and different restaurant chains, and in the last few years we decided that we feel really connected within our family and our church, but it didn’t feel like we were getting deep enough into the community. We have always wanted to do something on our own and open a restaurant, a cafe, or a coffee shop, so two years ago, we decided to go ahead and pull the trigger on this dream. We decided that once we found a place that we wanted, which became our location on 33rd and Lincoln, before we even opened the doors we wanted to give $.25 of every transaction to the Regional Food Bank backpack program. A passion of ours has been to be affiliated with, or do something with a kid-focused organization, and we decided that [the Re-
14 edmondactive.com
gional Food Bank] was a great organization to work with. EA: Absolutely. J: So we started there. Once we opened the doors, it takes a little time to get the word out, but we decided a couple months into it that we wanted to do more. We asked, “How do we take this deeper, and what do we do from here?” We decided that we were going to start handing out free coffee, and we’ve become known as the free coffee place. We hand out free coffee every day between seven and eight o’clock, creating awareness for local organizations and taking donations throughout that time period. Quite honestly, it’s grown and evolved quite a bit since we’ve started, it’s
They do a great job and are a great group of people, and we’ve been blessed to come across them. We featured them as one of our monthly organizations and just felt such a connection to them that we decided when we opened a second location that we were going to donate 25 cents of every transaction to help them do the great work that they do. About three months ago we launched our second, scaled-down location inside of Crossings Community Church. But since we’ve opened there, we’ve kept our commitment to give them 25 cents of each transaction to do the great work that they do. EA: That’s fantastic. So, focusing on the charity work a little bit, we have
what the organization is and what they do to contribute to help bring the exposure, we have raised between $500 and $700 a month for these organizations. EA: Speaking of that, obviously the financial contribution to those organizations surely is nothing to sneeze at. Have you been able to visit these charities and see the impact of the work that you’re doing? J: Yeah. That’s why we’ve gotten a passion for working with some of the local organizations versus some of the larger ones is that we can see locally the impact on what they’re doing. And I’ll use Water4 as a specific example, their location is down off of 10th and May. Going down and seeing the warehouse where they actually
changed a lot, but it’s accomplished exactly what we’ve wanted to do. Our goal was to spread word about great organizations within the community and meet people who are doing great things out there. We’ve been doing this for almost a year and a half and we knew that we wanted to start local, and eventually get to work with some type of global organization. We ended up finding Water4. Are you familiar with Water4? EA: I’m not. Go ahead and if you’d like, go into that. J: They’re a local organization whose goal is to end the world’s water crisis. They empower communities across the globe by installing pumps and filters.
Water4 and the Regional Food Bank backpack program. What are some of the other charities that you’ve worked with and highlighted? J: We’ve worked with Autism Oklahoma, Edmond AMBUCS, Children’s Hospital Foundation, we’ve also worked a little bit with Limbs for Life, we’ve worked with Christmas Connection, we’ve done Relays for Life – well, Free to Breathe is the local chapter, and they combat lung cancer. There’s been so many along the way in the last 18 months. You know, through those, that first hour that we give away the free coffee, we bring exposure to what they do and take donations. We average, depending on
physically put the pumps together – it’s not only their headquarters but they put all the supplies together that they need and they have staging areas that they utilize to ship all the supplies. It’s just a really neat thing to see. Specifically, one well saves the lives of 33 kids and it’s like $1500 to be able to put that well together. And that’s one of the things that we ask for when we’re talking to charities is to come up with a number that impacts, whether it’s 25 dollars going to one hour of research for lung cancer, 25 dollars going towards a holiday basket to feed a family for the weekend. That’s one of the things that we look for when we’re doing that.

The ‘Perks’ of Giving Back
EA: Talk a little bit about the food. How did you formulate the concept of what you were going to offer to the public? J: That’s one of the things we’re trying to combat right now, is being known as just a coffee shop. When we first began the journey there were two things: we wanted to make sure that we were not getting involved in a seven-day work week, 20 hours a day where we wouldn’t be able to balance the quality of life with our family. So we thought we should probably do something like a coffee shop because naturally that means morning hours, but we also knew that the location that we opened here in Edmond had nine other coffee shops within a five-mile-radius. We needed something like food to be able to survive. So we also have that cafe-style eatery, where not only can you get any cappuccino or frappuccino or what we call “perkachinos,” you can get any coffee drink you want. We also do breakfast and lunch, catering and deliveries. For our breakfast menu, we have items like breakfast paninis, breakfast sandwiches,
a build-your-own fruit-and-yogurt parfait bar. What’s been extremely popular is breakfast burritos. That’s been our number-one seller lately. For lunch we also serve paninis, wraps, soups, salads and also flatbreads. It’s more of a kind of a quick lunch, but also kind of a cafe setting. EA: One notable thing about cafes and breakfast/lunch places around town, like Starbucks and some larger coffee shops, they tend to be an in-and-out ordeal. If you go into a Starbucks, there’s not a whole lot of seating. Usually there’s enough space for about two or three chairs, and then there’s a line to get your coffee and leave. Did the importance of being able to linger play any part in the planning of Perk Place, or did that happen organically? J: That conversation did come up. Right now we currently seat, just inside, about 25 and 30 people, depending on how we have the seating. We knew a couple things. I mean, one, naturally we wanted the seats to be filled whether you come in in the morning and have a cup of coffee and enjoy our free wi-fi and hang out for a
16 edmondactive.com
while, but we also wanted an atmosphere where it was kind of a quick service arrangement. But we also knew that, when we brew, we wanted to have a larger space where we can accommodate coming in for lunch and so we wanted to be on the quick service side, but we also knew that we wanted people to be able to stay and enjoy themselves and enjoy the atmosphere. We’ve had a few people label us as the Cheers of coffee shops. EA: That’s a pretty big compliment to be compared to Cheers. J: It is. And we pride ourselves on the fact that our people are great with service, remembering people’s names and knowing what their drinks are, and really creating an atmosphere where people feel that they belong. I hear it often, every day, and it’s a great thing. So to answer your question, it’s difficult because we are on a smaller scale, real estate-wise, but I like to see the seats filled. People see that and they know it’s a great place to go and people are happy there. As we grow and expand the walls, that’s going to be a good thing. EA: Switching gears, has it ever been difficult managing the cafe and the
charitable work? Have you ever had second thoughts? Has there ever been a moment where you’re like, “Is this what I’m supposed to be doing?” J: To be honest, yeah, we certainly have had those. But we knew what kind of people that we want to be, and the generosity part of the business, we knew that that’s something we wanted to be a part of our culture from the beginning. As you grow a business, naturally, especially in the restaurant business, we’re still faced with challenges; but as we move forward, that’s one piece of the business we do not want to lose. We’ve never honestly really been concerned about it and we’ve never looked back. That’s really who we are and who we want to be. EA: Just a couple more questions. What are your future plans? J: We just opened our second location at Crossings, and our future plan is to grow as far as we can grow. We don’t like to do things too quickly, so we’re still learning the business at Crossings and growing that business, but our intent is to have multiple locations. We’ve talked about future franchising, but we’re not really sure where that’s going to go just yet.
EA: And finally, what would you recommend on the menu for someone who’s never been in your shop? J: Well, on the coffee side, we have a couple of signature drinks. Right now it’s kind of seasonal, but we have the “Spicy Snow” that one of our baristas invented. On the coffee side, I would suggest that, and on the breakfast side, I would certainly steer people towards the breakfast burritos. Our most popular right now is our sausage burrito. We actually smoke our jalapenos for about four hours before we add them into our salsa, and that has been increasingly popular. On the lunch side, I would suggest any of our paninis. Our most popular right now is our turkey and provolone panini. EA: What’s in the “Spicy Snow?” J: Basically, it’s similar to a white chocolate latte, with a mixture of seasonal spices. It’s really become popular this time of year. EA: Thanks for taking the time to talk with us today, Jeff. J: You’re welcome. Perk Place is located at 1649 W. 33rd St in Edmond. They’re open 7 AM to 5 PM Mon-Fri, and until 2 PM on Saturday.

Life Happens Your Teen Might Be Entitled If… By Darcy McConnell, LPC, LADC
What are a teenager’s rights? Hopefully we can all can agree that teens have the right to be treated as a human being by friends, family and associates. While every family is different, each teen deserves someone to provide support, comfort and to remain safe from physical and emotional violence. They have the right to a sustainable lifestyle including adequate shelter, food and clothing. Of course, this doesn’t mean the right to the most desired clothing, cars, electronics, etc.! In Oklahoma, with the support of their high school administrator, teens at age 16, have the right to work. All teens have the right to an education which includes having the proper resources, environment, and facilities to learn the basic levels of public education. On the other hand, there are some behaviors that teens do NOT have the right to engage in: Constantly demanding to be the center of attention, or spending an inordinate amount of time complaining about things in their lives not being fair. Teens do have the right to make statements such as “you don’t love me” or “you just don’t care about me” when told no, however, they do not have the right throw fits and be disrespectful when asked to help out with chores or refuse to follow rules. If your teen often mistreats, breaks, or loses their belongings they do not have the right to replacements. Speaking to a parent or other adult in a demanding or degrading voice is not a right regardless of emotionality. If the latter is reminiscent of your child then it is probable that somewhere along the way, they began to think they were entitled to everything they want in their world and you have allowed it. That is painful to hear, I know, but you are in good company. The good news is you can change your parenting philosophy and likely achieve a better result. The only way to change this course that will undoubtedly lead to disappointment and hurt for your child is to begin disciplining your teen right now. This is NOT easy. But, a teenager who is not taught about limits and boundaries in life will not be equipped to be a productive adult. It is important for them to have enough freedom to make mistakes and it’s the guidance through these mistakes that that create the life lessons.
The following are some discipline techniques for teenagers that focus address teaching and punishment; 1. Restricted Privileges Restriction of privileges is necessary and may include grounding or taking away valued possessions of a specified period of time. This techniques is only effective if it pertains to something that your teen values most. The goal is to cause enough discomfort that they don’t easily forget the mistake. There must be clear guidelines as to how and when the privilege will be restored. 2. Behavior Contract Behavior contracts are binding agreements where expectations are clearly stated and agreed upon. Unmet expectations and consequences are clearly stated prior to agreement. This teaches the value of written and verbal agreements. This is a helpful technique that keeps arguing out of the discipline equation because it’s so concretely stated in the beginning. These type of contract should be very specific and not deviated from. 3. Extra Responsibilities Imposition of additional responsibilities for your teens can be helpful in teaching restitution values. Allowing your teen to make amends for misbehavior can be a valuable teaching technique especially when a party has been harmed by their poor decisions or mistakes. 4. Logical Consequences Logical consequences directly related to misbehavior and help with the understanding of why they’re in trouble. The idea is to help them think it through next time. 5. Reward Good Behavior Positive reinforcement with a reward system is a helpful way to motivate your teen toward behavioral change.
