AROUND EDMOND This year, the national temperature has been defined by an apparent display of the need for full disruption of the current status quo by the masses. The overwhelming support Donald Trump has received from Republican voters proves this need for disruption, as he is the last person I ever thought could be considered for President. Even though he says things other typical candidates would not, does not mean they are a good idea. As well, the support for Bernie Sanders over a well-qualified candidate like Hillary Clinton is also telling of the public’s craving for leadership outside the status quo, or the need for visible full disruption in who our leadership is. These may be bad examples of disruption. Locally, we have seen the amazing work of Jill Castilla, CEO and President of locally owned and operated independent Citizen’s Bank of Edmond be recognized, both locally and nationally, in her complete transformation of a bank on the brink, and her “disruption” of the status quo in banking and how CEO’s should act or the perception of how they should engage with their communities and with customers. This is a good example of disruption. Jill Castilla is tirelessly pushing the boundaries with her efforts to create community building at every turn, with her most visible example being the Heard on Hurd events that happen monthly in Downtown Edmond. Jill’s team has this event running like a well-oiled machine, moving into its 2nd full season, and you can see all of their authenticity and genuineness of their intent of the festival’s show at each event. As well, she has generated $1.5 million dollars in local revenue since the 2016 season opener, and at a time when state and even local revenue is at its lowest point. The creation of this event came at a time just before the Oil industry went bust and gives the community a place to enjoy time together and provides support to local micro and small businesses. Bringing me to my point, whether it was the crazy legislative session that just ended that had everyone scratching their heads and up in arms, or the choices we have for presidential candidates, or the choices locally we have been presented of events to entertain our families, all of these things are in our control to

support or to not support. Our founding fathers made sure of that freedom of choice. They were the OG disruptors and thankfully, because of them, we have the right to make good or poor choices to support who and want we want. One thing we as a city, state or country cannot handle is more apathy combined with shock when our own poor choices/or lack there of, affect a small group or the masses. Apathy can be our nation’s greatest enemy, and if you are not supportive of what is genuine and authentically good for your family and community, my personal opinion is that you cannot be judgmental when you do not like the later ramifications. Especially when you are not voting for those who represent you, who are actually making choices for you that are going to negatively affect yourself or your family. Remember this, this Independence Day. Get involved, no matter how small your contribution is, it will make a difference, in our community, our state and our country. Jill Castilla is one of Edmond’s best and nicest disruptor’s (and CEO’s), and I invite you to pay attention. Jill Castilla is by far one of the most forward thinking business people and parents in Edmond, currently, and the impact she is currently making will affect how we view Downtown Edmond physically, the continued growth of the Edmond Public Schools, the candidates to which represent the best interests of the Edmond Public Schools, arts in our schools, and so much more than just fun events in Downtown Edmond every month. Again, no matter how small your contribution is, it all matters in the end. We hope you enjoy this year’s LibertyFest Preview, it’s always a pleasure to put together! This issue has a fun daytrip of Oklahoma Waterfall locations from SE Oklahoma to SW Oklahoma, a fun Sparkling Sangria recipe and of course, a full and packed events calendar! Have an awesome June, and I’ll see all of you Around Edmond! ~ Sherri

Local Flavor Sparkling Sangria With the temperature heating up, I found a couple of recipe’s from Tasty that I am combining into one for an amazing light alcoholic or non alcoholic treat for the Fourth of July! With Rose being popular in the warm months, this Sparkling Sangria fits the bill with the combination of white grape juice, strawberries, raspberries and blueberries, combined with an affordable white and a sparkling wine. To create the alcoholic version, add 1 lb. of strawberries, 1 cup of raspberries and 2 cups of blueberries to a serving

container, then add 1 cup of white grape juice. Next, the Tasty recipe said to add 1 bottle of white wine, but I added 2 cups (due to adding white sparkling wine later). Let sit for at least 2 hours. When you are ready to serve, separate the wine mixture from the fruit, stack the fruit in glasses, add green apple stars, then fill each glass half way with the wine, then add half a glass of sparkling wine, and serve. For the non alcoholic version, I combined the fruit with the white grape juice and let it sit for at least 2 hours, then when ready to serve just added the sparkling white cider.

This recipe is terrific and lightweight, and a great way to celebrate family and friends before and on the Fourth of July!

Ingredients 1 lb Strawberries 1 Small container Raspberries 1 Small container Blueberries Green Apples, cut Âź inch thick with small star cutter 1 bottle White Wine (Ours came from Edmond Wine Shop at 15th & Boulevard) 1 bottle White Sparkling Wine 1 bottle White Grape Juice

Field Trip Oklahoma Waterfall Tour Every once in a while, you’ve gotta get away. Whether you’re planning a short vacation for the whole family or you’re looking to see the sights for yourself, sometimes a field trip is just what the doctor ordered. This month, we decided to take the day off and go on a whirlwind tour of Oklahoma’s waterfalls. With this, we’re expanding upon our previous field trip to Turner Falls in Davis, Oklahoma.

Chickasaw National Recreation Area

Our first stop: Chickasaw National Recreation Area (Chickasaw NRA), in Sulphur, Okla. Located at the foot of the Arbuckle Mountains in Southeastern Oklahoma, the Chickasaw NRA is a sprawling wooded park that features a complex network of creeks originating from the massive Lake of the Arbuckles. Founded in 1904 as the Sulphur Springs Reservation, renamed first as Platt National Park in 1906 and then as the Chickasaw NRA in 1976, the park is a full service camping destination. Our impression: The park is gorgeous and serene, even when it’s filled with people. The trails leading to one of the main attractions, Little Niagra, are clean and quiet. The Travertine Nature Center features some fun educational exhibits of local wildlife, including bison and redtailed hawks, as well as a gift shop. Little Niagra itself manages to be impressive despite the literal nature of its name, and is a popular swimming hole for the whole family. As a bonus, Turner Falls is just right down the road. Travel time: It takes about an hour and a half to get from Edmond to Sulphur, or about 100 miles. Admission: For a day-trip, the Chickasaw NRA is completely free to enjoy. For folks who want to make a weekend of it, camping fees range from $14 to $30 and a $9 reservation fee. According to the National Park Service, you must make your reservation for a campsite no later than seven days from the date you’re looking to camp out. For more info: https://www.nps.gov/chic

Field Trip Medicine Park / Wichita Mountains

After visiting the Chickasaw NRA and Turner Falls, it’s time to head over to the other side of the state. Medicine Park, located right on the cusp of the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Preserve, is probably the most adorable resort town this side of the Rocky Mountains. Founded in 1908 by Elmer Thomas, this “cobblestone community” was intentionally designed as a watering hole and relaxation spot for the surrounding communities. Medicine Creek runs through the town, with a bridge connecting both sides. Our impression: Medicine Park might be the cutest resort town this side of the Rocky Mountains. It was certainly worth the drive time to get there from Sulphur. When we arrived, the Red Dirt Ball, a free country and folk music festival, was well underway. The town, which normally houses roughly 400 people, was packed with tourists and festival-goers from all over the state. Like Chickasaw NRA and Little Niagra, the waterfall on Medicine Creek is open to the public for swimming, and the creek itself is a popular fishing destination. Its proximity to Wichita Mountain Wildlife Preserve makes it an excellent hub for adventurers. Travel time: It takes two hours to get to Medicine Park from Sulphur. It takes another hour and a half to travel from Medicine Park back to Edmond via the H.E. Bailey Turnpike/I-44. There are two toll gates along that route that cost $1.75 and $1.50 respectively, so make sure you get some cash for your return trip. Admission: Medicine Park does not cost anything to visit for the day, although parking was $2 for the music festival and it would have been another $2 to swim along the falls. For those looking to stay the night, the town offers dozens of lodging options. For more info: http://www.medicinepark.com Chickasaw NRA and Medicine Park make great additions to a broader “waterfall tour” of the state, and they’re the perfect destinations for family fun this summer.

LibertyFest Preview 44th Annual LibertyFest In 1923, Edmond started celebrating the 4th of July at Stephenson Park, and while the current Libertyfest event hosts 10 family friendly events, it didn’t actually start off that way. As the year’s passed, more and more events were added. In 1972, Edmond hosted the first fireworks display at the Edmond Rodeo grounds, and not until 1976 were they hosted at UCO. And not until 1987 did Edmond name the festival “LibertyFest”. Since then, approximately 125,000 people from all over the state come to Edmond to partake in the Taste of Edmond, Libertyfest Rodeo, the Concert in the Park, the Car Show, the Road Rally, KiteFest, Miss Libertyfest Pageant, and ParkFest held at UCO just before the fireworks display on the 4th of July. As well, we can all thank over 500 Edmond volunteers for participating in what we consider the crowned jewel of events happening in Edmond. So much so, that LibertyFest in Edmond, Oklahoma was selected as one of the top 10 places to be in America on July 4th by CNN & USA Today. In previous years, there have been really fun events, such as the Chalk It Up event, the Cardboard Boat Regatta and more. This year, the Concert in the Park will be relocated due to construction at UCO, and there will be a really fun addition of helicopter rides during the Road Rally! For more information on locations of events, how to purchase Taste of Edmond armbands, etc., please visit Libertyfest.org for more information!
