Around Edmond
Hi everyone! How fast did this year just fly by? We are already into football season, but it still feels like summer. Starting with this issue, I’ll begin the transition into fall and the holiday season. But first, I wanted to take a moment to address some things. Over the course of this spring and summer, I’ve encountered a lot of opportunities for change. I have especially been doing a great deal of listening to local professionals and residents, regarding my Shop Edmond print and online feature and my use of its hashtag for our Shop Edmond featured businesses. I am thankful to all of you who reminded me it’s ok to make mistakes occasionally regarding the way I handled a specific situation, and to everyone who contributed to the discussion in thoughtful and productive ways, thanks for the grace, I appreciate it more than you know. The number-one goal of EdmondActive Magazine and its social media presence has always been to promote local businesses and business owners in Edmond in a fun, unique and interesting way so that residents might have some insight into our local independent businesses - in print and online. This is a goal I am dedicated to, even if I’m not always able to mention every business in town, all of the time. It’s hard to run a small business, no matter what size or type. In any industry or market, you have to be able to compete with other businesses, and rarely anything – whether it’s a good or a service – comes for free. Other than the community aspect of hashtags used to outwardly connect residents, which in turn shows value in the manager or owner’s efforts in their community engagement, there can also be a business application when a hashtag is used for a specific purpose. Enter #ShopEdmond. The origin of #ShopEdmond is simple: for a few years, I have been working on a searchable social media guide for my retail clients that would allow my readers to easily find sales, offers, products and services in a way that aligned with a similar print feature named Shop Edmond. In 2011, I applied for, and received, an Oklahoma state trademark for Shop Edmond – specifically and solely for marketing and advertising purposes, not preventing the public’s use or any public service use by any other entity. An important question I received during the discussion about #ShopEdmond was “Why would you trademark a hashtag to begin with?” This is a great question and one I’ve thought about and entered numerous discussions with marketing professionals over. When I applied for my trademark for Shop Edmond, I was forced to do so in order to protect a vital part of the magazine’s brand from a specific competitor who recreated the section in another publication, specifically for advertising and marketing and to promote their own marketing company brand. I was able to prove that Shop Edmond appeared first in our print magazine and online and specifically for advertising and marketing. Only. According to Oklahoma State Statute Title 78, trademarks are “any words, slogans, symbols, emblems, devices or combination thereof adopted and used by a person to identify goods made or sold or services rendered by him and to distinguish them from goods made or sold or services rendered by others.” Trademarks protect businesses from competitors trying to undercut or copy them, and often provide a rallying point for loyal customers, but there’s a catch: they have to be vigorously defended in the context of their
use. While I was building the online guide on various social media sites, I discovered that a small handful of businesses who did not advertise in Edmond Active were using #ShopEdmond without my permission. I contacted these businesses privately and respectfully asked them if they’d like to advertise, they said no, and I asked respectfully for them to stop; most of them did. After receiving push back from a very small minority of businesses, however, I knew I had to perform my due diligence in protecting my trademark. Not to be bossy or worse. The bottom line is, the note I posted online which attempted to do just that, was only directed toward these few local businesses. However, I know I did not make that very clear from the beginning, and to that end I apologize for any confusion and concern I caused in the Oklahoma City Metro social media space. Twitter turned 10 years old this year; in that time, hashtags have really only exploded as instant communities and rallying points for causes within the last five years or so. Although #shopedmond isn’t trademarked, it is my intellectual property when used to advertise or market due to the term Shop Edmond being trademarked. I have always prided myself as being genuinely authentic and the same online as I am in person. I am hoping that small business owner’s who don’t know me don’t assume I am any less caring of their businesses than I am of my current clients. I am a small business owner too, and I cannot afford to give my services away for free and I do not assume any other business would do so for me, personally. I hope that those of you who own small businesses understand, and I hope those of you who read Edmond Active each month, and follow me at Facebook, Twitter and Instagram will forgive my lapse in judgment over my public handling of this matter. In this issue, I had the opportunity to speak with safe sleep activist Ali Dodd about Shepard’s Watch, her safe sleep watchdog group and why it was started. Ali Dodd’s mission is compelling, important, amazing and truly inspiring and I hope you’ll take the time to read. In My Home, I am featuring the coolest app for buying real estate developed by local and independent Brokerage – 525 Realty Group, in Downtown Edmond. If you are looking to buy in Edmond or are relocating to Edmond or the metro, check it out! In Local Flavor, check out our feature on Edmond’s newest restaurant, Mutt’s Amazing Hot Dogs (great new shaded outdoor patio that is dog and kid friendly)! And I included a little peek into our retailers finds coming this Fall, including information about Emory Anne Interiors moving into a larger building on 150th and Santa Fe. And lastly, please take a look at my overview of this year’s Heard on Hurd so far, complete with photos from the event from March through August. What an amazing event to watch grow. With all they give back to local charity, and the events vendor’s, musician’s local connections, it’s no wonder it’s fast become Edmond’s favorite event. Well, that’s it for this issue, I am delving right into the next and can’t wait to see all of you Around Edmond this month. And, thanks for the grace most of you have afforded me regarding #ShopEdmond. Grateful is an understatement. ---Sherri

UCO Remembers 9/11
CITY BUZZ
On Friday, September 9, 2016, UCO held its annual 9/11 Rememberance, and it was lovely. I was pretty emotional listening to the residents who remembered those they loved and the placement of 3,000 flags around Broncho Lake was a somber reminder of this event in all of our lives. 15 years later, I for one am glad that UCO does this for the community as a way to never forget.
Free Trees Edmond Electric has partnered up with The Arbor Day Foundation again for free trees in October. The cool part this year is that you can reserve your tree online, starting on Monday 9/26 at www. arborday.org/edmondelectric. You can pick the tree up at Mitch Park on Friday Oct. 7 from 3-6 or Saturday Oct. 8 from 9am to 12pm. If you received a tree in April, you’ll need to wait on distribution period before reserving another tree. The trees available are energy saving species and include Tulip Tree, Star Magnolia, Warren Red Holly, Eastern Redbud and Water Oak.

What’s New
West and NW Edmond hit the jackpot with the newest Starbucks location at Kelly & Danforth, according to the steady stream of cars in their drive through! While the Starbucks at Danforth just east of Santa Fe decided to close about 5 years ago, and oddly no other coffee shop has been able to thrive in that area, this particular location looks to be good when it comes to drive through traffic, foot traffic and indoor use, and patio traffic. Hopefully West Edmond has been without a coffee shop for so long it will use this one and not give them a reason to close it!

Shepard’s Watch
Ali Dodd’s Mission for Safe Sleep at Home Daycares Ali Dodd’s 14 month mission to change Oklahoma laws after the passing of her 11-week old son, Shepard have resulted in rapid changes in DHS rules and state laws. When I first heard of Shepard’s Watch, and followed his mother Ali Dodd on Facebook, you could not tell that only 14 months ago, that she and her husband lost their 11-week-old son at a local home daycare. She is so upbeat and ready for the next chapter of their lives with the impending birth of their new daughter in mid September. On April 5, 2015, there was no law that made placing a newborn or any infant in a non-safe sleep environment at a home daycare a criminal act, despite it being a requirement of DHS. On this date there was no DHS online reporting requirement past a short time frame at DHS, so that if you researched a home daycare with infractions or violations of any DHS rule, much less safe sleep violations, you wouldn’t find it within the DHS online records if a serious violation occurred just prior to this short online reporting period. On the day Ali Dodd lost her son, the home daycare provider had placed
Shepard swaddled unbuckled in a car seat and Shepard suffocated, while left in another room with the door closed for 2 hours and no baby monitor to alert the care giver, says Dodd. Dodd states that the home daycare provider was cited 10 days earlier for placing another baby down for a nap, swaddled, in a swing, and that DHS actually required this particular caregiver to take a safe sleep training session. According to Dodd, only 10 days before, the home daycare provider asked the DHS official who cited the care giver for the swing incident if it was ok to allow a baby to nap in a car seat, to which Dodd states the DHS worker told the home daycare worker according to the care givers official file records, that no, it was not ok to place a baby down for a nap in a car seat, only on their back in a crib or separate sleep space free of other objects. In Dodd’s research of the prior events leading up to the occurrence of her son’s passing, she stated she had discovered that there was no DHS rule or State law stating a non insurance carrying home daycare provider had to disclose to prospective parents they lacked liability insurance, nor
does the State of Oklahoma even make liability insurance a legal requirement of home day care providers. This is the background to Ali Dodd’s year long mission and her efforts to make sure violations are readily apparent to prospective parents seeking home day care facilities, and is the background to her desire to make it law that home day care providers be required to disclose whether or not they carry liability insurance. This fall, Dodd was happy to see SB1273 become law, which was titled Shepard’s Bill. This law encompasses safe sleeping conditions that makes it illegal to put a baby down to sleep with other items such as toys or loose blankets in their sleep environment. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the recommendation is that babies only sleep alone, on their backs and in a crib, states Dodd. According to Dodd, she is working with Rainbow Fleet to educate parents and care providers in the practice of safe sleep. The CDC claims there are 3,500 SUID deaths in the United States each year, and these deaths occur without obvious explanation among
08 edmondactive.com
Shepard’s Watch babies who are less than 1 year old. Dodd stated that DHS only requires care providers to take 12 hours of formal, state approved training, and she states that none of the training has to be about safe sleep. Dodd’s goals this Fall moving forward, are to have legislation changed to require care providers take at the least 2 hours of safe sleep training. DHS has recently started to provide voluntary safe sleep training sessions with providers and to parents. Dodd believes the providers who have come to the training sessions voluntarily are just fantastic and shows their desire and dedication to their profession in their efforts to provide quality care to local children and babies. Her next mission is to convince the State Capital that safe sleep DHS requirements should be law, and that liability insurance should be legally required of home day care providers. The larger centers don’t actually have to carry liability insurance by law, nor are any care providers required to disclose whether or not they carry this insurance. According to Ali Dodd, most larger day care providers do. For a lot of the newborn parental population, they are 2 income households, on a strict enough budget, and even after saving money before the baby comes, they cannot afford the approximate $1200 per month bill corporate daycare’s charge. This affordability issue is what drives so many parents to utilize home day care providers. If a new mom can stay home for at least 2 months, and so important during a newborn’s most susceptible period of life due to SIDS (Sudden infant death
syndrome – caused by suffocation ) or SUIDS (Sudden unexpected infant death syndrome – which are deaths that occur with infants 1 year or younger that don’t have an obvious cause), this saves the family approximately $2,400. This savings is really not a savings, this cost is just avoided, while the family struggles
to make ends meet until the end of the Mom’s paid maternity leave. Unfortunately, the coroner in Shepard’s case ruled his death as occurring due to SUIDS and not SIDS, and this made his cause of death an accident by unknown causes. Ali stated that it is her hope that more home day care providers will take a look at safe sleep methods and take advantage of the DHS voluntary training sessions now being provided. She is hoping these responsible providers of infant care will continue to ask the hard questions. Here are the things Ali Dodd believes are the most important things to ask about safe sleep and about home day care provider’s situations: • Ask the provider if they carry basic business liability insurance. • Ask the provider if they have taken a safe sleep course and if they say yes, ask to see their certificate showing they attended a course within the last year. • Ask how they track complaints and injuries. Ask to review their public licensing website and if they have complaints, ask for explanation of their violations. • Dodd reiterates it is so important for your children to be in a safe environment, and the most dedicated care providers will make the effort to be well trained, interested in continuing their education in care. For more information about Shepard’s Watch, and Ali Dodd’s mission for more comprehensive paid parental leave in Oklahoma and nationwide, visit online at www.Facebook.com/Shepardswatch.

to the events site at h8thokc.com. The H&8th event manager understood the value in hosting the event to allow residents and visitors alike to experience all that OKC had to offer. The same intention is meant and warmly received by Edmond residents with Heard on Hurd, started in September 2014. Heard on Hurd has created a niche unto itself outside of H&8th, in that it involves businesses, food trucks and musicians that all have a connection to Edmond. And, the coolest part, each month, Heard on Hurd has raised money for Edmond non profits, such as the Edmond Public Schools Foundation, through beer sales, of course, from local brewers. To increase the areas economic activity, the event planners spend approximately $70,000 per event, and in return, Heard on Hurd has brought approximately $3 million in economic activity to the City of Edmond since late 2014. This appears to make Heard on Hurd the single most positively impactful event to occur in Edmond, and it doesn’t appear that over 30,000 of the Edmond and other local communities residents have tired of the amazing community connection Heard on Hurd brings each month, with growth occurring in community participation every month in 2016. Here are some photos from Heard on Hurd over the years, and for more information on the event, find them at Twitter, Facebook and Instagram @ HeardonHurd!

New App by 525 Realty Group at The Kivlehen House The mother and son real estate brokerage team of Mariana Verga Lloyd and Benjamin Floyd, owners of the independent, Edmond-based real estate brokerage 525 Realty Group at The Kivlehen House, have debuted a real estate and community app, becoming one of few local brokerages in the Metro to do so. Located in Downtown Edmond on Jackson at the recently-opened Kivlehen House, 525 Realty Group is cutting edge, and is one of the fastest growing brokerages in the metro. They are ranked at approximately 400th to #17 in sales by OKMAR in 18 months. They provide a true one stop experience in sales and buyers resources. The app provides some useful tools for prospective homebuyers: it allows you to search for homes or property by zip
code, square footage, price or city, and it allows you to print listings out from your phone. You can also view information about Edmond and the surrounding communities, find utility providers for each community, and choose from any one of their associates directly from the app. While still under development, the app will eventually feature metro events next to the listings on the map. This tool is a must have if you are searching for a home either in Edmond or if you are considering moving to Edmond or the surrounding metro anytime soon. Search for 525 Realty Group on the iTunes Store for Edmond’s flourishing real estate market at your fingertips!
