Around Edmond

Thank you so much for taking the time to pick up Edmond Active Magazine, and if you’ve stopped in to support our advertisers during this Holiday season, my thanks is double. During the Thanksgiving season, everyone is more atuned to shopping with businesses that are owned by local residents, that pay payroll to other local residents, who all in turn spend their money in Edmond and that raises the collection of city tax revenue, which in turn supports city services and city employees. Doing this is an amazing thing in that it ensures we have an awesome parks department and parks, an awesome police department and fire department. Hopefully, all of you have continued on with this local love. I know for a fact that gift wrapping services aren’t available at Target, and for the most part any mall store. And I know for a fact, if I was looking for something particular, no one at these and other corporate stores could simply care less. As the season winds down, and so does your shopping, consider this when you go out to eat, need services, banking, real estate services and more. Constant support from us, more than shopping local and small once a year, means the things that made us all believe Edmond was unique will be around for some time to come. This issue features our 9th annual Christmas Light Driving Guide! This year everyone is a little late getting their lights up, but most in the highlighted areas should be up by now! We have some cute items from some of our advertisers that are available for gifting, and you can find a full current set of gift ideas at EdmondActive at Instagram! Local Flavor features Edmond’s sweetest new business Katiebug’s, Locally Owned features Premier Blinds, My Home features Jennifer from Oklahome and her ideas on simplifying for the Holidays, Martha Hall of Arcadian Getaways wrote a terrific movie review, I created a quick large area Christmas Chalkboard decoration that makes a great transition into the new year, What’s New feature’s the all new Rusticuff store in Spring Creek Village, I wrote a book review on Premier Blinds owner Don Sikes book Santa Writes Back, along with our events calendar, City Buzz, and Social Edmond with new events happening during December. Thanks for reading, and follow at Instagram, Facebook & Twitter! ~ Sherri

If you travel to Tulsa to get your Rustic Cuff fix, be excited because an all new Rustic Cuff location is opening at SpringCreek Village at 15th & Bryant. This location is the former home of many longtime retailers that were locally owned, but have since left the retail business or left this location due to down sizing. Locally Owned

Premier Blinds By Sherri Hultner Premier Blinds is a locally owned source in south Edmond for basic 2-inch faux blinds up to the most technologically advanced window coverings on the market, along with coordinated window panels, bedding and pillows. They also offer custom garage customization from flooring to organization in cabinetry and accessories. Premier Blinds was started 14 years ago at the home of Don and Sondi Sikes. Their goal was to offer the very best customer service in this field, and to offer the most options to local residents under one roof. The 15020 Bristol Park location, just off of 33rd St. between Kelly & Santa Fe has just celebrated its 3rd anniversary. This location was one of a few the Sikes were looking to move in to, and as they sat in the parking lot across from this location and wondered if it was meant to be, they received a phone call from the leasing agent, and they knew it was absolutely meant to be. Premier Blinds started in bringing product and samples to you directly at your home, and with this location now offer a showroom with samples of product lines currently offered, and you can also browse their selection online at www. Premierblindsok.com. Be sure to follow at Facebook to see examples of recent installations. Hours are Mon. – Fri. 10-6 pm and Sat. 10-2 pm For more information, call the store at 405-471-4083

My Home Simplify the Holidays

Fall is absolutely my favorite time of the year. The temperatures finally chill out, the nights seem cozier, the outfits are much cuter, pumpkin spice latte is back…but more than anything the excitement of the holidays come

by Jennifer Hodgens

Oklahome Home Builders

into view. There’s the beginning of an electric energy in the air that gets stronger and stronger through Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s. It starts out with Hobby Lobby stocking their shelves (way too early even I say) with pumpkins, table runners and wreaths. Schedules get filled up further and further in advance as parties, festivals and family events start popping up on weekends more and more. Gifts are bought, budgets are blown, time is short and stress is high. And before you know it, it’s January and you’re broke, 5 pounds heavier and flat exhausted. You feel like you’ve just ridden a wild roller coaster and been spit out on the other side. Like a lot of couples, my husband Craig and I are the perfect example of “opposites attract”. I’m Clark Griswold, he’s the Grinch. I start shopping and dreaming of Christmas party outfits right after Halloween. I try on, coordinate and theme each outfit for each event we’ll be invited to go to. Craig shows up 15 minutes before each party we “have to go to” and after he’s whined and begged not to go, he usually relents and huffs “fine, what am I supposed to wear?” December is pretty much just one repeated fight over and over about too many social activities and spending too much money. Honestly, that’s the last way I want to spend the season. I don’t want my daughter growing up with frenzied and stressful memories of the Christmas. When I think of the perfect holiday, I dream of laughter with friends and family, cozy quiet nights, spiritual reflection of gratitude and maybe a couple of inches of peaceful, quiet snow. I want to invest in traditions, live within our means, gift experiences rather than stuff. Last year one of my New Year’s resolutions was to keep this holiday season simple. I purposefully scheduled a reminder for myself for October 1st to pre-plan this out. This holiday season I want to pledge to simplify. To focus more on what does matter and to relentlessly cut what doesn’t. More

than any time of the year I need to fiercely guard our time and prioritize our sanity. More love and less waste... More fun and less stuff... More joy and less stress… If you too strive for a simpler holiday season and choose to plan ahead to make this happen, join me in the movement for priorities. Follow the #SimplfyHolidays pledge on the Oklahome Team Facebook page to join the discussion. There I’ll offer schedule hacks and tips for gifting. Add your tips and traditions to help gift outside of the box too. Happy #SimplifyHolidays season! May yours be filled with peace and joy.

Local Flavor Katiebug’s Trailerpark By Sherri Hultner

Once in a few years does a community have the privilege of enjoying a new business that brings absolute pure joy with them. Katiebug’s Trailerpark was Edmond’s lucky catch in mid 2016. I got a message at Instagram in June of this year asking if I knew of any great locations around Edmond that might be a fit for this wildly popular snow cone and hot chocolate trailer, so that Katiebug’s might have a more permanent home, while Lucille the sister trailer traveled to other metro locations. Immediately, I knew the corner of Broadway and Hurd, that has remained empty for the last 8 years, was THE spot, due to the walkability caused by the new shops at Campbell Corner, and due the traffic trends that made traffic slow down just at that spot, along with ease of parking, and business lunchtime traffic being a factor. Katiebug’s is a unique organic snow cone and hot chocolate retailer that makes both from scratch. For those who aren’t impressed by the term, or scared away by the terms “organic”, let me assure you the taste is above and beyond any other snow cone stand, and the signature hot chocolate, pictured here and hand made marshmallows (Almond Joy shown here) are so good, you’ll want hot chocolate season to last forever. Be sure to stop by and visit Downtown Edmond’s sweetest addition on the corner of Broadway and Hurd Street. There hours are set weekly and can be found at www.facebook.com/katiebugsshavedice and you can also follow Katiebug’s at Twitter and Instagram!

Movie Review

Though many of the people around us in the theatre knew the Tramel family, our group was not familiar. At first I felt like I was intruding on a intimate memorial. Not sure that I wanted to spend 90 minutes watching a the memorial of a stranger’s life. I was drawn in with the editing and story-telling obviously passed on to Clayton from his grandfather. Clayton mixes in interviews with his grandfather, J.L. and re-enactments of those special moments in his childhood and young adulthood along with stories from J.L.’s family. I came away with a feeling of having gone back in my own

There are so many books and stories available for children explaining the holidays, Christmas and Santa Claus, and then separate books that explain the biblical reason for the season. Most of these books are geared toward children between 4 and 8 years old. Santa Writes Back is a contemporary story about a boy named Jake, after having written Santa Claus asking for a Mountain Bike, he found himself questioning his own belief of Santa’s existence after hearing that some of his own friends no longer believed. Jake takes to reading his Bible to see if he can find proof of Santa’s existence and finds there is no mention of Santa anywhere in the Bible. Upon his discovery, Jake decides to write Santa a letter asking Santa about Christmas and Jesus. A while has passed, and one evening Jake answers the door to find a gentleman that heavily resembled Santa Claus, who was delivering a letter in a blank envelope simply marked “Jake”. After inspecting the envelope, Jake looked up and the gentleman was gone. Santa’s letter explained that indeed, the birth of Jesus was the reason for the season of celebration in December, and that the Christmas season also required belief on Jake’s part. On Christmas morning, Jake came to his tree and found his beloved Mountain Bike, and decides right

Life Happens Depression Can Be Hard to Spot in Children Amanda Percival Edmond Family Counseling Staff Therapist

There are some words that individuals use in regard to mental health that are used to communicate a wide range of symptoms. “Depression” is just one of those words. I frequently have clients that say they are depressed. Or on the flip side, I may have a client that vehemently denies being depressed. Usually my response to this is, “Explain to me what you mean by the word depression”. I am looking for my client to describe to me their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. Without this further information, it is difficult for me to agree or disagree with their determination. Depression is one mental health condition that has a wide range of symptoms and severity. While a deep sadness over a loss of a loved one is difficult, it may not be depression. Sadness is a normal reaction to loss. However, when this sadness is sustained for a period of time and begins to affect our ability to function in our daily roles, it may be time to be assessed. Many mental health conditions are the extreme of a normal reaction to an event or experience. What does depression look like? What does a depressed individual look like? The answers to these questions can be as different as we are as individuals. Some of the traditional signs that come to mind for many of us are sadness, tiredness, social withdrawal, crying, loss of motivation, sleeplessness, hopelessness, and a lack of personal grooming. While there can be many other signs, these are some of the more common. But what about children or adolescents? While younger persons can exhibit the same signs as adults, depression may present differently. Children may become angry, act out behaviorally, have a more difficult time concentrating, or have an “attitude”. Couple these signs with the normal changes that children go through as they progress from teen years to adulthood, and there is no wonder it can be hard to decipher the difference between a kid that is depressed and a kid with a behavioral issue. It can even take considerable time for a trained therapist to navigate through the complicated emotions, thoughts, and behaviors to determine a proper diagnosis. Perhaps the most important aspect of determining if you or someone you know is experiencing depression is to have an honest and open dialog. Ask the person what they are feeling and what they are thinking about. This may be the only way to determine if that child is having a hard time with focus at school due to depression or ADHD. Are they socially withdrawn due to poor social skills or depression? It is also helpful to seek a professional evaluation from someone trained to screen and evaluate for depression. I challenge you to view depression as more than just a sad person crying. While this can be an accurate portrayal, it is not the only portrayal. Depression is a term that has many faces and manifestations. Remember to keep your eyes and mind open so you don’t miss it.
