Around Edmond

Thank you so much for taking the time to pick up Edmond Active Magazine, and if you’ve stopped in to support our advertisers during this Holiday season, my thanks is double. What it means to local business owners is the difference between being able to pay local employees, offer all of us unique items and making a living! This last two months have flown by so quickly and I believe it’s because we didn’t have much of a winter. If you are new to the area, be sure to check out Edmond’s 26 plus parks and outdoor spaces, which are a few of the things that make Edmond so amazing. In the last two months, I have been readjusting to life without any dogs under foot since the week before Thanksgiving. For 14 years, our family has raised from birth 3 black labs, and I have to tell you that since I office out of my home, the silence has been utterly deafening! Dogs are so amazing and I don’t think any of us understands just how strong the bonds created are until they are gone. This issue features a new positive feature section I am naming 5 things to Love! As we have always printed 10 to 11 issues a year, we did not do a Romantic Edmond issue, and I decided to mention things I believe are positive to our community each issue! There are a few businesses closing, such as Pepe’s that were really beloved, and this makes me sad, but at the same time there are new places opening up such as Papa Dino’s Pizza & Grill that are locally owned, well reviewed and very reasonably priced! Check it out in What’s New. This month’s Local Flavor features a Northern California Merlot found at Edmond Wine Shop that is a small batch wine, My Home features Jennifer from Oklahome and 10 things you should know when building your own home, Martha Hall of Arcadian Getaways wrote a terrific op ed about spiritual romance (all year not just for Valentine’s Day), this month’s What’s New feature’s the all new Ellis Island Coffee & Wine Lounge, Papa Dino’s Pizza & Grill and the new Schlotzsky’s, along with updates to our events calendar, and Social Edmond! Thanks for reading, and for daily information about what is happening Around Edmond, be sure to follow @EdmondActive at Instagram, Facebook & Twitter! ~ Sherri

The Meat House regains stolen smoker!

On January 27, 2017 someone backed up to the smoker parked in The Meathouse on Danforth and Santa Fe, worth more then $10,000 and the heart of this business, hooked it up and towed it away. Thankfully, over 600 people shared this Facebook post, saw the clip from the surveillence video, and with the hard work of the Edmond PD, and without much more explanation the smoker was returned ready to provide amazing smoked meats to Edmond residents yet again on Friday February 17, 2017! It’s always great to see something good happen to local business owners under these circumstances!

OKC Home & Garden Show We were given the chance to head over to this year’s OKC Home & Garden Show to see what’s new and what’s trending thanks to the folks at 525 Realty Group. The very first thing I noticed when walking through the door was MDF garden edging and that trend resounded throughout the show. This isn’t new, but the styles have definitely expanded from years past, and definitely something to consider with Oklahoma’s extreme weather! Another trend that is relatively new, Tiny Houses. KFOR reported recently that in fact Tiny Homes of Oklahoma out of Tulsa, would in fact be partnering up with the Wheeler District Team in OKC to start up the areas first Tiny Home community. According to Tiny Homes of Oklahoma’s Facebook statement, “Exciting news to share! We met with the Wheeler District team Monday and are happy to announce that we will be collaborating with them to bring tiny living to OKC! You will be able to choose from a selection of approved tiny home designs with exteriors that meet the Wheeler District’s design guidelines and standards. The tiny home interiors are limited only to your imagination! The Wheeler District will have the best amenities that OKC has to offer just a few minutes from downtown. The master plan includes extensive bike trails in addition to all of the other offerings of Oklahoma City’s dynamic urban core. We’ll announce more details in the coming weeks!” It was great to see 525 Realty Group participating in this year’s show, we can’t wait to see what’s new later in the year!

Heard on Hurd

2017 Heard on Hurd Preview

Heard on Hurd is coming and that means it is time for us to show our support knowing that part of this events proceeds go to a deserving local non profit! This spring and summer, Heard on Hurd will be the place to go to get out and have fun with our family and friends at the season opener March 18th in Downtown Edmond from 6 to 10 pm! Heard on Hurd sets itself apart from other local events with its authentic community connection. The event planners are Citizen’s Bank of Edmond, and their contemporary insight and sense of fun can be found all around at this event that our community has just fallen in love with! You can peruse the pop up shops, stroll through the streets checking out the different food trucks, and window shopping some of Edmond’s Downtown businesses, or take a seat at the bandstand area to listen to some fantastic local music. The atmosphere is absolutely lovely. Every detail is well thought out and designed to make each event unique, memorable and fun for each resident who attends, and incorporating opportunity for Downtown Edmond brick and mortar businesses, and city wide locally owned businesses to participate, as well. In 2011, Oklahoma City experienced its own first Food Truck Festival with H&8th, which featured just a few food trucks and hosted approximately 200 people, and in its final year before becoming a once annual event in 2014, the event hosted from 20,000 to 40,000 people, according to the events site at h8thokc.com. The H&8th event manager understood the value in hosting the event to allow residents and visitors alike to experience all that OKC had to offer.

12

edmondactive.com

The same intention is meant and warmly received by Edmond residents with Heard on Hurd, started in September 2014. Heard on Hurd has created a niche unto itself outside of H&8th, in that it involves businesses, food trucks and musicians that all have a connection to Edmond. And, the coolest part about Heard on Hurd is that raise money for Edmond non profits, such as the Edmond Public Schools Foundation through beer sales, of course, from local brewers. To increase the areas economic activity, the event planners spend approximately $70,000 per event, and in return. Heard on Hurd through local resident participation has brought millions of dollars in economic activity to the City of Edmond since late 2014. Each month around 30,000 residents of Edmond and other local communities converge on the newly energized Downtown Edmond area, to enjoy the fun and authentic vibes that Heard on Hurd brings each month, with growth occurring in community participation every month since 2014. From a business perspective, this is great for our City, and from a residents perspective, how great is it that the leader of Citizen’s Bank of Edmond, Jill Castilla, wanted to provide a fun event that was friendly to all generations of our community to enjoy each month? We are lucky to have Jill’s spirit continue this year and I hope you are able to make it out each 3rd Saturday from March through October!!! Here are some photos from Heard on Hurd over the years, and for more information on the event, you can find them at Twitter, Facebook and Instagram @HeardonHurd!

Spiritual Romance By Martha Hall

14 edmondactive.com

Spiritual Romance

It’s a romantic season with Valentines on the calendar. When we think of romance in terms of the Bible, you might go to the Song of Solomon, sometimes known as Song of Songs. In Song of Solomon, our lovers share their passion thus giving us God’s permission to enjoy intimacy from a spiritual point of view. The holiday of Love, Valentines, is more than romance and intimacy. I am a bed and breakfast innkeeper, where the world stops for Valentines. It’s romance and intimacy for our guests. However in 37 years of marriage and 26 years of innkeeping, I know that “love” is really a sum of character traits. I need to take you to another scripture ... You know the famous “Love” chapter in the scriptures, I Corinthians 13. Many pastors will quote it this season and we hear it often at weddings. Hmmm...what about at a funeral? As a young woman, I read this scripture differently... how does it relate to me? In recent years I’ve heard messages regarding this same perspective, so I suppose I wasn’t the only one God showed this to. Shoot! I thought I had a divine moment there. Let me show you my old favorite Bible and how I Corinthians 13

looks there. We know that God is Love, I John 4:8, and that we should love like God does. God describes Love in the Love Chapter as patient, kind, not envious, not boastful, not proud, not rude or selfish, not easily angered, always protective, always trusting, hopeful, always persevering, never failing. Well? How is that romantic? Men...all of these words are great romantic tips for you this season. Would she say that these words describe you? Patient, kind, not envious...how about not boastful, not proud, not rude or selfish? Are you easily angered, do you always protect her, trust her, hope for her, persevere for her? Do you fail her? If she would describe you in these character traits, you are a romantic hunk! She’ll adore you! AHH Ladies, your man would be so excited and blessed if he could describe you with these words.... patient, kind, not envious, not boastful, not proud, not rude or selfish, not easily angered, always protective of him, trusting him, hopeful for him, do you persevere for him? Do you fail him? To him you would have hung the moon! He will treasure you! It’s wonderful to be treasured I assure you!

I guess I need to make a romance package for my guests that encourages these as well. It was an awakening for me 30 years ago, as I wrote these verses with my name in place of love. I mentioned a funeral earlier. I aspire that the pastor would read these words describing me at my funeral. I pray that I can be this kind of love not only to Gary, my husband and lover, but to my children and grandchildren, my family and friends, my guests and business associates. Oh, yeh, I’m still working on it. I wasn’t too patient or un-angered with Blue Cross Blue Shield last week, but I’m working on it. Give me time. Give each other time. Be hopeful for them. Romance isn’t flowers, wine and sex. It’s heartfelt unselfish, persevering, unfailing, patient and kind, protective, trusting and hopeful. Love goes on past the Valentine dinner to the next hard week at work, the next sick child, the vacation for two, the hopes and dreams for one another. Love is.

My Home 10 Things to Remember when Building a New Home By Jennifer Hodgens Oklahome Team and Oklahome Homebuilders

10 Things to Remember when Building a New Home Many couples skip down the path of building a new home with the excitement and expectation of creatively designing their own space to match their own unique personality and style. With over 16 years’ experience selling new construction homes, I’ve learned one major lesson: Building a custom home is not for the faint of heart. As I tell my clients: Reality TV is so popular because of all of the drama. There’s a reason why real estate and design has merited an entire reality TV network! In the end however, a dream has been accomplished and you actually get to live in it! I’ve found that the couples who are still smiling while stepping over the threshold have followed these 10 rules: 1. “Welcome to the family” It’s understandable that you’re excited to get

going right away, but it’s important to take your time to research your builder. Look for reputation and quality work as well as an eye for the latest trends. Check out his website and meet the team in person. You’re going to be working with them all closely over the next couple of months. It’s important that you click. 2. “Oh, it’s just a little hill”. Involve the builder in your lot selection. We usually try to hide the wince when clients come in telling us they’ve already purchased their homesite. One time we had a couple who were so excited that they scored the greatest deal on the last lot in a neighborhood. When we surveyed the land with our Site Preparation Manager, he chuckled that he’d already been brought out to that same lot twice before and talked the last two couples out of buying it because it had a slope requiring over $20,000 of dirt work alone. Your builder can look at the

logistics of the lot and estimate how much preparation will be required to build a pad. Also check on utilities. Are public utilities available? Is wired internet possible? Will you be required to add a propane tank or drill a well? Is natural gas available? Is total electric an option? The answers to these questions can blow your budget before things even begin. 3. “Who’s paying for this?” Talk to your builder up front about financing. I’d recommend having him take out the construction loan. That’ll mean you put up earnest money before the process begins and then at the end, that earnest money will apply towards your down payment. This way the builder makes all of the construction loan payments while the home is under construction and all the insurance liability lays on his shoulders. If a roofer breaks an arm, the bill will land under the Builder’s giant insurance

16 edmondactive.com

umbrella rather than on your lap. 4. “Decisions, decisions” Yes, you’ve looked at home magazines until your eyeballs have glazed over and you have a picture of your dream home floating in your head, but I promise, there are a million details you haven’t even considered yet. If your builder doesn’t offer a Designer to help you along the way, I highly recommend hiring one yourself. Consider the expense an investment. She’ll be able to give budget-saving options to help achieve your mental picture and she’ll be the one staring at doorknob options online until 2am to help narrow the neverending option list for you. (Extra tip – Share your Pinterest and HOUZZ.com boards with your Designer. There’s a reason they say “a picture is worth 1000 words”. She’ll get in sync with what’s uniquely you.) 5. “It’s never too early” Have I mentioned yet that building a home involves SO many decisions? At the beginning you’ll want to pick up paint samples and shop for furniture right away. Resist the urge and try to make your decisions follow the construction timeline. Your builder will need decisions on the style of the home, floorplan, budget, window placement, flooring options and cabinetry long before paint, tile and light fixtures. Following a decision timeline keeps your construction process moving smoothly and keeps you from having to make panicky last minute changes. 6. “Donuts go a long way.” Be kind to the trade contractors working on your home day-to-day. When you’re visiting the jobsite, smile, say Hi and bring snacks. These guys are doing hard labor intensive work in all kinds of brutal weather. There will be times when you ask them to change something, stay late and hurry up. They’ll be much more likely to go the extra mile for someone who appreciates their skill and sweat equity. (Extra tip – Resist the urge to make on-site changes with the

trade contractors without involving your builder. One change will often affect several other steps and he needs to stay on top of any changes.) 7. “No one is working on my house!” The construction process has fast and slow periods. There will be weeks that go by without anything to see and there will be weeks when the home looks completely different day-to-day. Just because you don’t see workers hammering, sawing or painting every day doesn’t mean nothing is happening. There are several times during construction that the builder is waiting on the City to conduct an inspection (they’re at the mercy of their schedules’), or behind-the-scenes paperwork is in process or even one trade contractor finished their work early and the next is finishing up work on another house before being scheduled to work on yours. Be patient. Know that the builder is eager to complete your home just as much as you are (after all he’s making the construction loan payments!). 8. “The Ugly-Duckling stage” This is probably the rule I preach the most often. Building a house involves hundreds of people and millions of parts and a very organized order-of-events. There will be times that you’ll want to pull your hair out because the hole in the sheetrock hasn’t been fixed in weeks or the cabinet doors hang crooked way too long or no one seems to notice the crack in the window glass. Builders schedule ample bumper time right before closing to tie up all loose ends. They know there will be multiple scratches, dents and dings to repair so it makes since to schedule only one trip at the end to take care of everything all at once. 9. “Till closing do we part.” After making the decision to build a new home, it might be a good time to find a good marriage counselor. Stresses over money, living with the in-laws and master

My Home

closet size can cause any couple to want to build separate master bedrooms. One good rule is to decide who has the final say on certain selections. Maybe he gets to decide how big the garage is but she gets to choose the kitchen appliances. That also makes communication easier with the builder who often feels awkward stuck in the middle. 10. “Keep it all in perspective”. When you’re given so many options for selections it’s easy to forget to see the forest from the trees. You’ll spend nights lying awake stressing over the placement of a floor plug (extra tip – add a floor plug under a rug in the living room) when you wouldn’t even notice one in a pre-built home. Remember to keep it simple. When you’re asked to make a decision on an item that wouldn’t have been a deal-breaker, defer to your Builder and/or Designer to suggest an answer. They likely have more experience there than you do. Plus a Bonus Rule: “It’s going to get crazy” My time spent as a wedding planner before I entered real estate world prepared me for the craziness that happens at the end of the building process. Just like with the Bridezillas, I’d suggest that you make as many preparations earlier in the process than you think you need to. At the very end you’ll be exhausted from packing, moving, sitting on hold for-ev-er with the utility companies and gathering up closing costs, that you won’t want to make one single extra decision. Make plans ahead of time for everything you possibly can. Schedule movers, plan to board the pets, hire a cleaning company, transfer your mail, book a professional organizer. You’ll thank me on closing day. In the end, building a new house is like a lot of the weddings I helped plan. When all of the drama, stress and emotions are over, you’ll smile, look around and realize that your dream really did come true. And it’s so perfectly you!

Chacewater Merlot Available at Edmond Wine Shop In 1989, a huge forest fire burned an entire ridege of Ponderosa pines in the Sierra Foothills. The Manuel family survived and managed to save their home, but their land was scorched. Afterwards, they consulted agriculture and viticulture experts and determined that a new life as an organic vineyard would be a wonderful way to start fresh and make use of the deep, well-drained soils. The climates also proved an ideal combination of hot days and cool nights. As a consumer with less than average knowledge of the wine industry, I would personally say the above stated vineyard conditions created a new personal favorite for me. This wine is heavy on the tannins, and very pleasant upon opening the bottle, with berry and plum scents immediately evident, and very smooth on the palette. I would definitely recommend this small batch Northern California merlot to any of my friends and acquaintances as a terrific gift, or just to unwind on the patio! For more information on this wine or to find something in particular, contact Edmond Wine Shop at 405-341-9122, visit online at Edmondwine.com, or stop by the shop at 1521 S. Boulevard.
