Around Edmond
Hi everyone! It’s been a lovely Spring so far, and knocking on wood, the tornado season will continue to remain mild this year. This Spring has seen a February snow that went away as quickly as it came, and that lovely snowfall had us head for Arcadian Getaways to shoot snow covered cottages and countryside, seen in our last issue’s 5 Things to Love feature. Without any further freezing, this Spring saw the trees and tulips around town blooming a full 3 weeks earlier than usual, due to the warmer air and just enough rain throughout the winter months. The City Council finally approved the Edmond Urban Chickens proposal which now allows hens on some of Edmond’s residential lots, due in large part to Lanie Copeland’s persistent efforts, and as she so eloquently described to the City Attorney and to the Council, its popularity in other communities around the country, with niche industries booming in its wake. All seemed pleasant and a perfect entry into Spring… Then came the local elections. Our Mayoral race saw Mayor Charles Lamb gain 2 more years as Edmond’s Mayor with a majority of the vote, and this election also saw a group of residents stop further development of Spring Creek Plaza dead in its tracks, on the privately owned land at and north and east of 15th & Bryant. This conversation brought out all sides of this hotly contested issue at our Facebook page at EdmondActive, with one post and its conversation reaching over 39,000 people. For most people, they didn’t mind the further development featuring new entertainment, more shopping and dining but were adamantly opposed to apartment development in this particular area. It was awesome, whichever side you found yourself on at our Facebook page, to see civil conversation occur and disagreements happen without nasty politicking, which another local group ran its opposition on particularly. At the end of the day, Edmond saw almost 4 times its normal turnout for a local election, and that makes me smile. It’s truly nice to see people get involved locally and make their voices heard in how they want Edmond to develop, regardless of which side of that issue you supported. And that is the real story here – and in fact an important and positive one, with so many feeling helpless in the changes happening around them nationally. Edmond’s development has seen some national level departures, but much more coming in and is at its highest level in years, to which appear to be due to ebb and flow of their markets. From a City’s point of view,
though and sometimes not understandable to local residents who lean toward locally owned business support only, some corporate development is always necessary to keep our sales tax base stable, so that our City infrastructure stays running, and so we may continue to enjoy the parks and open spaces paid for by these funds! I trust that Mayor Lamb and Edmond Chamber of Commerce President, Sherry Jordan, have the City’s best interests at heart and are heading in great direction! Speaking of development! Did you attend the March 2017 Opener for Heard on Hurd?! Over 32,000 residents from and around Edmond attended, and it was fabulous! This event happens the 3rd Saturday every month from March to October. It’s mellow atmosphere surrounding Pop Up Shops, the metro’s best Food Trucks and Edmond connected musicians allows our community to connect in ways that other annual events do not. In addition, economically, in 2016, Heard on Hurd brought over $4 million dollars in economic activity to our community. If you ever get the chance, stop by the newly renovated lobby at 1st & Broadway to say thanks to those at Citizen’s Bank of Edmond who volunteer each month. The lobby and bank are not only gorgeous, but useful as a spot to connect as Edmond’s newest meeting space. I gave the cover to the OKC Memorial because of the “heart” it displays and how that reflects on Edmond and the metro! I also feature what’s next for the Edmond Urban Chicken’s group going forward after City approval, Martha Hall, of Arcadian Getaways, reviews a new trend in bible journaling, we bring you coverage from the last two Heard on Hurd events and some reviews on 4 of the Food trucks. I am also reprinting an old favorite Perfect Margarita recipe provided to us by Vance Gregory, owner of Edmond Wine Shop since 1973. This is the ONLY Margarita recipe you may ever need, and just in time for patio weather! Life Happens features an article by Edmond Family Counseling, and is a timely piece about self-sabotage, and one that may be relevant to someone you know, so pass it on! As we have always printed 8 to 10 issues of EdmondActive a year, this year my schedule seems to be backwards, and I am happy to be into the monthly mode, yet again. Citizens Bank of Edmond held a ribbon cutting on April 10th to celebrate its renovated main location at 1 East 1st Street in downtown Edmond. Edmond Urban Chickens’ First Workshop sponsored by Oklahome Homebuilders
With the City of Edmond allowing certain property owners to have hens only, the force behind Edmond Urban Chickens’ is now hosting a series of workshops to which this local group will be provided all sorts of basic information to Edmond chicken owners. This inaugural meeting was held at the Oklahome Homebuilders offices at 19 N Broadway on April 13, who explained to homeowners who are interested in raising their own chickens, all of the new regulations and rules set by City Council. Apache Rattlesnake Festival If you’re looking for a quick getaway to see something unusual, we have something you’re really going to like. Every third weekend in April, the little town of Apache, Okla. comes alive with the sights, sounds and smells of festivity. But this is no ordinary fair or carnival: it’s a festival celebrating some of the deadliest critters known to man. This is the Apache Rattlesnake Festival. The Apache Rattlesnake Festival is a big deal in Southwest Oklahoma. Local residents prepare for the festival all year; by the Monday following the festival, they’re already receiving calls from vendors and food trucks intent on securing a spot along Apache’s main street. Tourists come from all over to try the food, ride the rides, and most importantly, watch grown men handle rattlesnakes, standing amidst rattlesnakes, like nothing is even the matter. Founded in 1983 by Ron Orf, the Apache Rattlesnake Festival and Association has centered the festival around a major hunt each year. They show the rattlesnakes off, butcher and cook

them, and folks flock in to see. The event is pure family fun, but there’s a serious positive side-effect to the festivities: it brings the local rattlesnake population under control and helps fund social programs in Apache. Even if snakes make you squeamish, mark your calendar for next year’s Festival and head on down to Apache for a good time!

Heard On Hurd Heard on Hurd opened their 2017 Season on March 18th with a resounding community approval with over 32,000 people attending the 4 hour monthly festival. This was the largest single attendance for the event since its inception in September 2014, and hopefully letting the board at Citizen’s Bank of Edmond and the City know how much the community loves this event happening every 3rd Saturday March through October. The first event in March had the perfect blend of perfect weather, Spring Break just ending, and the event having such a welcoming vibe attached to it. The April event saw over 28,000 in attendance, with perfect weather and just dipping in attendance as it happened the night before Easter, I am sure. And the theme was the celebration of Citizen’s Bank of Edmond’s 116th Birthday! As of today, I have yet to attend a large event such as this where the community is not agitated in any wait it might encounter, and this is a testament to its creator, Jill Castilla, President and CEO of Citizen’s Bank of Edmond, and her genuine reason for starting the event originally. The absolute authenticity is apparent.

Lalo’s I Love My Taco Chop and Grill
If you need some nosh but don’t want to drop too much dosh (I hate myself for this line), next time you’re at Heard on Hurd try Lalo’s I Love My Taco Chop and Grill. Four bucks gets you a taco, and an extra dollar gets you a can of soda of your choosing. The service is quick and the result is pretty great - we got a marinated chicken Lalo’s Taco with cheese, sour cream and salsa, and everything was cooked to perfection. Tortillas can sometimes fall apart under the weight and saturation of your average taco, but Lalo’s uses premium flour tortillas that stand strong against the savory, messy marinade in their chicken. If it wasn’t for the fact that we had three other stops to make on my food tour, we easily could have gone back for seconds or thirds. Cheap, fast and delicious.
The Hall’s Pizza Kitchen
Our next truck was The Hall’s Pizza Kitchen. This truck serves pizza by the slice or the pie, and its menu goes further than your average cheese, pepperoni or supreme offerings. It goes without saying that if you enjoy a good pizza, and if you’re unafraid to try new things on your pizza, you’ll find something you like here. The slice of the Company that we had - pepperoni, Italian sausage, Canadian bacon, non-Canadian bacon, mozzarella, their sauce, basil - was perfectly balanced between the savoriness of the three meats and the sweetness of the marinara sauce. The crust was cooked to perfection: crispy but not burnt, and the hint of basil was noticeable but not overpowering.
The Browns’ Kitchen
So here’s the thing about Heard on Hurd that speaks to its success: the lines are super long at every food truck on Broadway. This was doubly true at The Browns’ Kitchen, a truck specializing in sweet treats and full meal-sized dishes. This really was a “what you see is what you get” affair; everything they promised, they delivered on. We ordered an $8 grilled chicken nacho plate, and our only regret is that we couldn’t eat all of it because we had to try other food trucks’ offerings. They were pretty standard nachos other than the chicken, which was grilled perfectly and very flavorful; all in all, a perfect meal for folks looking to have a seat for a minute.
Metro Mini Donuts
Our final stop on the way through Heard on Hurd’s food trucks was Metro Mini Donuts. This is a massively popular truck with a lot of fans; by the time we made it over to this particular spot, it was closing in on 9:45 PM, and yet the line to order was still long and winding. There’s also a spot of caution that needs to be mentioned here as well, as it takes a good long time for your order to be made. There is a perfectly good reason for this, by the way: the donuts you order are made to order, which means they’re rolled, fried and dressed with the topping of your choice right there, right then. We only got a half-dozen powdered donuts for $5, but they were by far the best donuts we’ve ever tasted.

Local Flavor The Perfect Margarita Recipe
Recipe By Vance Gregory / Edmond Wine Shop
2 parts mix (I like Pepper Creek Farms, Margaritaville or Jose Cuervo Margarita Mix) 1 part 100% Agave Tequila 1/2 part Cointreau juice of 1/2 lime (more if you want it less sweet) Salted glass rim (optional)
If you like salt on the rim, rub glass rim with piece of lime, then invert into margarita salt. Use a shaker or pitcher to mix all ingredients, then shake or stir well with plenty of ice. Proportions are not set in stone.... you can make yours more or less strong, and more or less sweet. Using more Cointreau gives it more orange flavor and sweetens it up a bit. Triple Sec is a substitute for Cointreau, but the original recipe used Cointreau, which has an orange flavor. I don’t
recommend Grand Marnier because it has Cognac in it which covers up the flavor of good Tequila. Always use 100% Agave tequila. That’s all that’s sold in Mexico. If it isn’t 100% agave, it must still be at least 51% agave-based, but it hasn’t the character of real Tequila. Any questions? A Beautiful WORD Coloring Bible

I was sure I wanted to go into medicine when I grew up. In 4th grade I redrew all of the colored diagrams in my mother’s medical encyclopedias, coloring the liver, pancreas,etc with beautiful labels as well. To go into medicine you have to study alot of chemistry. I mean alot. I took the class in my senior year of high school and got by because my lab partner was the smartest guy in the class. Didn’t hurt that he was cute too. For the first two years of college I was the professor’s secretary, so you guessed it, I cheated. The 3rd year was in a new college with no help. I was flunking. I just couldn’t get it. My roommate, Clover, was taking the course too. When I shared that I had finagled my way through high school and junior college chemistry, she was intrigued to help me. Clover was Asian with a mind for color. She started teaching me chemistry with color! All of a sudden my mind grasped the formulas because the “colors” of each element meant something to me! Recently I discovered the “Beautiful Word Coloring Bible” I’ve always loved the Bible, in fact my family calls my old worn out Bible the “Magic Bible”. Open it to any page and there is writing and dates and a helpful verse. This Beautiful Word Coloring Bible has opened up whole new insights for me. Remember color resonates with me. Joshua 1:8 says, “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” For many of us we are so busy with life and the “urgent” that we don’t meditate much on our spiritual life; much less on the Bible. That’s what is so wonderful about this Bible! With the new coloring trend going on, many will find that coloring a verse in their coloring Bible will cause them to meditate on that verse. It will sink deep as the shades of green, touches of yellow and red, contrast of purple fill the page. I highly recommend this Bible because the pages are easy to read with wide margins to write your own notes or doodle you favorite verses. Several special verses in that chapter are often already illustrated for you to color as well. Unless you go to Philippians chapter 4. There were too many good verses so they couldn’t fit in my favorite, verse 8, “whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” I’ll have to doodle that myself. I enjoy the New International Version but there are other choices of Bible Versions. I purchased mine at JoAnne’s Fabrics of all places. I’ve ordered several as gifts from Amazon though. Better yet, I’d recommend enjoying a cup of coffee while you visit your local Mardel and pick up your copy! Be sure you are getting the “coloring” Bible though. Life Happens The Art Of Self-Sabotage By: Belinda Crosier, LPC, LADC
A fascinating, but frustrating, phenomenon that therapists witness much more than we would like is that of the self-sabotage syndrome. You’ve probably observed it in someone you love – or maybe even yourself – even though you may not have realized it at the time. It’s very common in people who have been in recovery awhile, which usually leads to criticism and selfblame, which in turn fuels the downward spiral of shame, self-loathing and attempts to numb those feelings by using drugs or alcohol. Even in people who don’t abuse drugs or alcohol, this syndrome sometimes occurs when things have been going really well in an area that has historically been fraught with disappointment or failure. To the lay person, self-sabotage makes no sense and can fuel immense anger toward the person engaging in it, especially if it’s a loved one we desperately want to see happy or successful. But for those who succumb to it, self-sabotage is a survival strategy. People who have experienced considerable turmoil, trauma or disappointment learn to expect those outcomes from their endeavors, to the point that experiencing any measurable success can generate significant anxiety. After all, success is a new and foreign sensation, something they’re not used to. It creates discomfort, and may create feelings of not being worthy of success or fear of not being able to maintain the success. Failure and frustration, as the norm, become comfortably familiar and it seems less scary to remain in what’s familiar than to step out into the unknown. The belief that things will eventually fall apart (as they have in the past) fuels apprehension, and the uncertainty of when and how this will happen is stressful enough to push people to subconsciously create a crisis. I’ve heard such things as, “I guess I just got too happy,” or “things were just going too well,” numerous times from clients who, as much as they professed to want to succeed, made sure it didn’t happen. It’s now believed by some experts that people can actually develop an “addiction to chaos” as a result of the hormones and chemicals produced by the brain in times of high stress or intense emotion, similar to those produced by the use of drugs or
alcohol. Such a person is driven to repeatedly seek out that same flood of brain chemicals; thus when life settles into stability, calm or (heaven forbid!) mundane, the itch to recreate that excitement overwhelms the rational part of the brain and the selfsabotage cycle begins. How do we tame this hairy beast? As with many dysfunctional behaviors, awareness is the first step. Noticing, and even writing down, self-sabotaging behaviors can help us own & be more accountable for them. Common cues for self-sabotage to watch for are: negative thinking & self-talk e.g.“What’s the point?” “I always blow interviews (relationships, jobs, etc.”) poor time management/spending too much time on trivial details which can divert attention from important issues self-pity, and rescuing others stuck in turmoil. Self-saboteurs must learn patience, which can be facilitated through mindfulness, meditation or even yoga. Identifying and critically reassessing the chaotic relationships and situations in one’s life may allow for distancing from, or even terminating, some of them. Learning to set boundaries is one of the ways we learn to take care of ourselves, which may be a foreign concept and will require determination and the ability to shake off guilt. A trusted friend who is not embroiled in chaos, or a therapist, may be necessary to provide the objective feedback to recognize and reverse this syndrome, but it can be done!
