Around Edmond Hi everyone! Welcome to my August/September edition of EdmondActive. I am so proud of this issue, as it is my 70th! I remember the very first issue and having the pleasure to shoot Summer Stolz, who is now a OSU Cowboy. She was and is an amazing person with an amazing giving nature. This has been a weird month for so many, and certainly the eclipse and tonight’s full moon just didn’t help. But at the same time, and of course, looking on the bright side, Houston residents revived all of our faith in humanity. I have no words for what happened with Harvey, and understand what it’s like to literally have nothing but the clothes on your back. It will be slow but with Texas sized love, anything is possible and hopefully everyone there will be able to bounce back. Huge love to all of the Oklahoma companies and people that are lending a hand, makes me proud to be a transplant Okie. In this issue, I was privileged to sit down with former President of the Edmond Chamber of Commerce, Mayor Lamb, and extraordinary musician Kyle Dillingham to discuss what a Sister City Program is, entails and how many entities in Edmond have been setting the pace for a thriving program with Engles, Russia and Qingyang, China. In My Home, Jennifer Hodgens, owner of Oklahome Homebuilders, talks about their upcoming Parade of Homes home, which is absolutely stunning. You can visit this home from September 9 to the 17th. In What’s New, check out some of the awesome local businesses in our area that either just opened, or just had ribbon cuttings with the Edmond Chamber of Commerce. And from our cover, my favorite event of the year, Heard on Hurd. Citizen’s Bank of Edmond has reached record attendance this year, and all due to the amazing volunteers from Citizen’s that come out every month, and of course, the pure energy of Jill Castilla, CEO and President of Citizen’s Bank of Edmond. The genuine effort has brought people from all over the metro to visit Edmond each month for the last 4 years. For Edmond residents, it’s an amazing chance to get together and enjoy Downtown Edmond every month to enjoy a bite to eat, do a little window shopping and pop up shopping, and then kick back and enjoy some amazing music with family and friends. And to all of you following EdmondActive at Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, thank you so very much, and thanks for being so much fun to engage with, it’s truly a joy to log in everyday. I hope you enjoy this issue, and be sure to check for next month’s issue where I will highlight all of the retailers for the upcoming holidays! Thanks for reading and I’ll see all of you around Edmond! Sherri

Many Oklahomans will agree when I say fall is the best season. With pumpkin patches, hay rides and endless collections of scarves and boots, it really can’t get any better. Except it can! In Oklahoma City fall is kicked off with the semi-annual Parade of Homes. Hosted by the Central Oklahoma Home Builders Association, the Parade of Homes is a nine days long metro-wide open house event where you can tour and explore dozens of stunning homes built by Oklahoma City’s finest homebuilders. From September 9-17, homes in Edmond, Moore, Yukon, Midwest City and everywhere in between will be open to the public from 1:00 – 7:00 p.m. Tickets are free and can be downloaded from www.paradeofhomesok.com or picked up at any one of the open houses. Be sure to register your ticket because those who visit five or more homes will be entered to win a $1,00 gift card! Beginning in early September copies of the Parade of Homes Fall Classic Guidebook will be available at any Best Buy location. The incredible local homebuilders

featured during this parade have worked for months and years to create inspirational homes that will WOW the public. From European Cottages to all American Craftsmans, you’re bound to stumble onto your dream home no matter your style preference. These homebuilders have teamed up with the best local designers and subcontractors to feature homes decked from floor to ceiling in the latest trends. Beyond the quality construction, some homes will even be staged with custom furnishings to further show off everything these homes have to offer. Our team, OklaHome Homebuilders has also been working tirelessly to put the final touches on our own little slice of heaven - a show-stopping modern farmhouse located at 10409 Chitwood Farms Road. We would like to personally invite you to tour this interior designer’s dream-come-true. We say that both literally and figuratively, this home is being custom built for an interior designer (and mom)! From the wrap-a-round porch to the reclaimed wood shiplap walls, creativity is dripping off every inch of this 4,830-square foot home.

Our modern farmhouse homes are known for their seamless pairings of the modern and the rustic and this home lives up to the standard. The seamless metal roof, wallpapered niches and vintage-inspired tile are what Pinterest boards are made of! This home has something for every member of the family. Men can relax in the ultimate man cave - the Gentlemen’s Whiskey Lounge. Seriously! The kids will enjoy playing in the upstairs bunk room and homeschool learning space that is complete with a secret hidden play space! As it often is, the kitchen is the heart of the home and in this case, it’s also every chef’s dream. Thor appliances and quartz countertops create a beautiful, functional space for preparing meals for family and friends. Our custom modern farmhouses are tailored to meet every homeowner’s needs and dreams and this home has exceeded all expectations. During both weekends of the parade we invite you to stop by our parade home to enjoy food trucks, live music, a photo booth and just a grand ol’ time! We can’t wait to see you there!

Painted Sky Opera Brings A Season Of Divas To Oklahoma City Painted Sky Opera announces its 201718 season of three productions about opera’s most recognizable character – the diva. Painted Sky Opera begins its season in October with “Tosca”, Giacomo Puccini’s masterwork about an opera singer who must make some difficult decisions when her beloved Cavaradossi is arrested for treason by the lecherous police chief Scarpia. The season continues in February with “Souvenir”, a comedic play with incidental music about the life of one of history’s least-talented divas, Florence Foster Jenkins. The season concludes in May with “Three Decembers” by American composer Jake Heggie, focusing on a Broadway diva over three decades as she achieves fame at the expense of her relationship with her two adult children. “I’m excited for our second season, in part because we get to share these three fantastic shows with Oklahoma City,” said

Rob Glaubitz, artistic director of Painted Sky Opera. “Tosca hasn’t been performed in Oklahoma City since the 1960s and the other two – Souvenir and Three Decembers – have never been performed in Oklahoma . Overall, our second season will challenge traditional assumptions of what ‘opera’ is and reveal that opera is an exciting and evolving art form that looks towards the future as well as the past.” As Oklahoma City’s only professional opera company, Painted Sky Opera enters its second season with great energy, having presented three successful productions during its first season of existence in Oklahoma City. Of particular note was “La Traviata”, which sold out both of its performances and featured Normanbased soprano Nicole Van Every, who will appear again in Tosca in the title role. The success of Painted Sky Opera’s first season led to the Civic Center Music Hall asking Painted Sky Opera to become its

newest resident company. “It’s a honor to be chosen as a one of the resident companies at Civic Center Music Hall,” said Glaubitz. “One of our primary goals in starting Painted Sky Opera was to make professional opera a part of Oklahoma City’s arts culture. Sharing the city’s premiere performing space with some of the city’s premiere arts organizations is a huge step in the right direction.” “Tosca” will be performed October 6-8. “Souvenir: A Fantasia on the Life of Florence Foster Jenkins” will be performed February 23-March 4. “Three Decembers” will be performed May 1113. All performances are at Civic Center Music Hall in the Freede Little Theatre or CitySpace. Tickets and more information are available at www.paintedskyopera. org.

Sister City

Kyle Dillingham Represents Edmond In Qingyang As Cultural Ambassador For Edmond

Kyle Dillingham contacted me a few weeks ago, to alert me to the fact that he and his band Horseshoe Road are set to act as a cultural ambassador for Edmond’s Sister Cities program this September in Qingyang, China as a cultural ambassador, and he couldn’t be more excited about his upcoming tour on the Silk Road. The Sister Cities program is designed as a means for cultural exchange. A community of any size decides to join with a community in another nation to learn more about one another. Therefore, a sister city, country, oblast, prefecture, province, region, state, territory, town, or village relationship is a broad-based, officially approved, long-term partnership between two communities. Sister City relationships begin for a variety of reasons. Generally sister city

partnerships share similar demographics and town size. Partnerships may arise from business connections, travel, similar industries, diaspora communities, or shared history. For example, Portland, Oregon and Bologna, Italy’s partnership arose from shared industries in biotechnology and education, an appreciation for the arts, and a “similar attitude towards food”, whereas Chicago’s link with Warsaw, Poland began with the city’s historic Polish community. Sister Cities International also recognizes ‘Friendship City’ affiliations. These are a less formal arrangement that may be a step towards a full Sister City affiliation. ‘Friendship City’ is also the Chinese term for ‘Sister City’. EDMOND’S SISTER CITY CONNECTIONS

I recently had the privilege to be able to sit down with Horseshoe Road’s Kyle Dillingham, Mayor Lamb and former Edmond Chamber President Ken Moore to discuss the Sister City program for those who may not be familiar with this program, specifically to help describe its importance in diversity, inclusion and community collaboration on a global scale, and how that relates to all of us in Edmond. Ken Moore: A Sister City Program is meant to connect community to community, country to country. This program has been going on for a very long time, it actually started in Germany. Edmond has been involved in this program since 2008. This program isn’t just a City program, it’s a partnership with the City, UCO, OCU, the Edmond Public School

District, the Edmond Fine Arts Institute, the Edmond Chamber of Commerce, the Edmond Economic Development Authority and Francis Tuttle. Our first Sister City endeavor was with Engels, Russia, which is a German city settled within Russia and to which has an organization here in Edmond, which was interesting because we were looking for a German city to partner with. They have visited Edmond numerous times and have brought several students over to Edmond some that are still studying at UCO and Mayor Lamb and I have visited Engels numerous times, as well. We collaborated with Engels to achieve mutual understanding of each city’s cultural, educational and economic similarities and differences. We are concentrating our program on the Cultural and Educational aspects of the program, not so much the business aspect, although if that happens, then that is an added benefit Our second Sister City effort is in Qingyang, China. After visiting the representatives from Qingyang who visited OU, we attended a significant event in 2016, where over 90 countries attended, and where we signed a Sister City letter of intent. The most important part of the Sister City Programs are to understand the similarities and differences of the two communities participating. Mayor Charles Lamb: We believe the group that this program will have an impact on from this program will start with the now 25 to 35 year old generation. What we are focusing on is cultural and educational connections. In Qingyang, they have been studying English for years so they will be able to come over and easily communicate with us. One of the largest foreign populations at UCO is Chinese, so this collaboration between our two communities will help gel this connection. This generation is not bound by historical events, and have more an interest to connect through diversity and culture. Technology is improving such as with skype

Sister City

opportunities, and David Goin was with us on a trip to Engels, Russia, and he was thoroughly impressed by their student population and their ability to interact with us, and this technology helps connect the kids. Kyle Dillingham: Places like UCO have programs in place that is quite intentionally trying to bring these international students together with Edmond students, in a way that allows for a very natural development, and for some students who will develop careers within international networks. WHO MATCHES CITY TO CITY? Sister Cities International (SCI) is a nonprofit citizen diplomacy network that creates and strengthens partnerships between communities in the United States and those in other countries, particularly through the establishment of “sister

cities”. More than 2,000 cities, states and counties are partnered in 136 countries around the world. The organization “strives to build global cooperation at the municipal level, promote cultural understanding and stimulate economic development”. As the official organization which links jurisdictions in the U.S. with communities worldwide, Sister Cities International recognizes, registers, and coordinates sister city, county, municipalities, oblasts, prefectures, provinces, regions, state, town, and village linkages. The U.S. sister city program began in 1956 when President Dwight D. Eisenhower proposed a people-to-people, citizen diplomacy initiative. Originally a program of the National League of Cities, Sister Cities International became a separate, nonprofit corporation in 1967, due to the growth and popularity of the U.S. program. The organization’s mission is to “promote peace through mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation — one individual, one community at a time.” Sister Cities International’s stated goals are to: • Develop municipal partnerships between U.S. cities, counties, and states and similar jurisdictions in other nations. • Provide opportunities for city officials and citizens to experience and explore other cultures through long-term community partnerships. • Create an atmosphere in which economic and community development can be implemented and strengthened. • Stimulate environments through which communities will creatively learn, work, and solve problems together through reciprocal cultural, educational, municipal, business, professional and technical exchanges and projects. • Collaborate with organizations in the United States and other countries which share similar goals.

The events run from 6 pm to 10 pm, beer sales are donated to the Edmond Public Schools Foundation, there are pop up shops and local brick and mortar shops are also open to the public, but most fun are the music and community connections.
