Around Edmond Hi everyone! Thanks for taking the time to read our October/ November edition of EdmondActive. This time of year always gives way to volunteering with local organizations for the upcoming holidays. Some of my favorite things in Edmond during this time of year are the holiday lights going up, the turning of the leaves and of course the giving nature occurring around Edmond. On November 23, 2017, the UCO Nigh Center Ballroom will be home to the Edmond community Thanksgiving Dinner from 11 am to 3 pm. Numerous leaders and residents from around the area participate every year and the event is free to the community, thanks to generous individuals and corporations. Also, if you’d like to sponsor a family for Christmas be sure to contact the Hope Center on Broadway for more information. This last few weeks there were some fun events happening around town, including the Edmond Chamber of Commerce’s 1st Annual Dancing with The Star’s event that was their annual fundraiser for the numerous programs the Chamber has available throughout the year. It was a fun and very successful event! Edmond Family Counseling held their 1st Annual Citywide Talent Show with their event Edmond Shines, and it showcased some phenomenal talent to raise money for the programs Edmond Family Counseling offers to the Edmond community through the year, as well. It will be so fun to see these events again next year with all new talent! In this issue, Benjamin Floyd, owner/broker of the Cover home 525 Realty Group at the Kivlehen House gives advice to those in their twenties who are on the fence about whether or not they should buy a home yet or just wait. Also, as it gets colder outside, I decided to try a Pinterest living wreath project and
I have included the projects instructions. You can do so many variations including using succulents to adjust the look to your personal style. This version with pansies only took about an hour to complete and is really pretty and will hold up with the cold air moving in. In this months Local Flavor, we feature a new wine called Spellbound and pass on information from Thirst Wine Merchants about their efforts to help support the Napa and Sonoma County Fire winery fire victims. It’s always nice to know our purchases are making a difference. Also, check out Life Happens brought to you by Edmond Family Counseling, featuring a great article about teen isolation this issue. And last, in CityBuzz, this month Citizen’s Bank of Edmond hosted their 2nd Socially Unacceptable Workshop with small business owners, featuring consultant from Edmond, Scott Williams. If you get the chance to attend their next workshop, it is highly recommended . And to all of you following EdmondActive at Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, thank you so very much, and thanks for being so much fun to engage with, it’s truly a joy to log in everyday. I hope you enjoy this issue, and be sure to check for next month’s issue where I will highlight all of the retailers for the upcoming holidays! Thanks for reading and I’ll see all of you around Edmond! Sherri

Should you buy a home in your 20s? Good question. There’s no single, surefire answer to it. Okay, there is…if you consider “it depends” to be a solid answer. You can search the Internet and find as many reasons to buy a house in your 20s, as you can find to not buy a house in your 20s. But you have to consider the source of every article. (As I’m sure you do.) What’s the author’s motivation? All you’re really doing is confusing yourself, or convincing yourself what you already
want to believe. So, the better question is… Do you want to buy a house? Before you answer… Maybe ask yourself a couple of other questions. Do you feel too young to buy a house? Do you feel old enough to buy a house? They sound like the same question, just turned inside out. But they aren’t really. Not if you really stop and think about them and how they relate to you. These are deeper questions not everyone in their 20s cares to ponder. And that in and of itself is probably a pretty
good answer to the question. If you can’t, won’t, or don’t want to think it through on a deeper level, then you probably aren’t ready — whether you want to or not, you probably shouldn’t. So, if you’re the type that cares to ponder those questions, please do. We can move on when you’re done. The words below will still be here in a few minutes. Don’t decide against buying a house, just because your friends aren’t buying them It’s true. Most 20-somethings don’t buy houses. And if you ask around,
06 edmondactive.com
most 20-somethings will give totally legit sounding reasons why they can’t, won’t, or don’t. But that doesn’t mean they truly can’t…or shouldn’t. What it probably means is that they haven’t given it all that much thought. They’re probably just spitting out answers that they’ve assumed or overheard from their peers. Or they’re just unconsciously following the crowd. This is nothing new. This happens generation after generation. Trends happen. Right now, it just so happens that
most people in their 20s follow a different path. Most first-time buyers don’t buy until their early 30s. And that’s why you might want to give the whole buying-ahouse-in-your-20s thing some serious thought… At some point, most of your peers will want to buy their first house At some point, people stop wanting to “play house”, and actually buy a house instead of renting or living at home. It never gets easier. At any given moment in time, the interest rates matter. Housing prices matter. The job market matters. One’s lifestyle matters. Everything always matters. But everything is always relative. Sure, all of that dictates what you can purchase. However, first homes are rarely ever as awesome as someone hopes for. They’re called “starter homes” for a reason. It’s rare that a first-time buyer is buying their dream home. Buying your starter home, condo, or multi-family home earlier on, gives you a leg up amongst your peers. You get a head start. You’ll be a step ahead in getting to your dream home. And maybe you’ll even be able to keep the first home as a rental property. If you want to buy a house… Obviously, if you want to buy a house, you’ll want to do your research. It’s easier now than it
ever has been to find information online. But as misleading as the information out there is on whether you should even buy a house in your 20s, so is the information on the best way to approach it. Lots of people make mistakes when they buy houses. Not just first-time buyers. The Internet has certainly made a lot of information available. But it has not necessarily made everyone who looks at the information an expert in the process, or analyzing the options. It has simply made it easier to avoid dealing with the experts. Don’t avoid dealing with the experts Many people want to avoid dealing with real estate agents. There are good reasons for that; not all real estate agents are great. Some are pushy. Some will sell you on doing something. Some don’t have any more clue than you do. But some are great. And that should be your first, and most important step in buying a house. Find a great real estate agent A great real estate agent will essentially cost you the same to work with as one that’s not so great. And, whatever agent you hire won’t cost you a dime until and unless you buy a house. So you might as well choose the best one you can.

New at Edmond Wine Shop located at 1520 S Boulevard Hours: Monday - Saturday 10-9 pm Spellbound Cabernet Sauvignon showcases lush texture and bold dark fruit flavors with a slight hint of oak and spice. Cedar and tobacco aromas complement integrated lively tannins and fill out your palate, allowing the wine to be consumed on its own or with your favorite food. The Spellbound Cabernet Sauvignon continues to be one of our shining stars because of the wine’s balance and intensity of flavors. With this vintage, warm days cooled down by fog in the evenings allowed the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes to become rich in structure and obtain dark fruit characteristics. We are proud to offer our Cabernet Sauvignon, and hope you also find the rich textures, chocolate finish and balanced structure as delicious as we do. We have new items arriving every week. Looking for something? We are really good at tracking down those hard to find items. Give us a call, stop by the shop, or send us an e-mail. 405-341-9122 info@edmondwine.com

Life Happens Teens Are More Depressed Because They’re More Isolated By: Chad Mccoy, M.a., Lpc
There are some things that you cannot live without. Food, water, air, relationships, safety, belongingness, just to name a few. Without these things, we literally cannot survive. Of course, outside of the biologically imperative needs, we also have psychological and sociological needs, many of which follow a hierarchy. The most mandatory of which: A smartphone. It’s an interesting idea that with the world at your fingertips, you could feel so isolated. With today’s technology, you can visit the Great Wall of China in the same day you visit Death Valley. You can connect with friends across the globe, or across the house. However, more teens are expressing increased levels of loneliness, decreased levels of happiness, and increased reports saying they feel depressed and overwhelmed. Maybe they should watch “Gladiator” again and really ponder Russell Crowe’s question: Are you not entertained? Simply answered: Not always. In a discussion with Sheila Stinnett, our executive director, she described a young man who expressed that his phone was the “greatest source of joy and also, the greatest source of pain in his life.” Additionally, I shared in a conversation with a 16-year old female client that she would “literally starve herself if she had her phone taken away.” That’s such an extreme commitment to a relatively new evolvement of technology. In 2016, 77%of adults and 92% of young adults reported that they owned a smartphone. Social media has become a necessity for young adults to stay connected, even when that connection is harmful to them. With even younger generations leaning heavily on social media and technology, that number will only grow. I’d even offer this: The disconnect and loneliness younger individuals characteristically feel may be
more to do with the purposelessness of their interactions with others. Sure, taking a snap chat and sending it is purposeful on some level, but planning a time to meet with somebody, driving to meet them, and purposely engaging with them takes planning and thought. A decline in face to face social interaction can give some conclusory evidence to the increase of depression and unhappiness. As Jean M. Twenge, Ph.D. writes in her Psychology Today article: “Given the undeniably negative trends in teens’ mental health and the evidence suggesting smartphone use is at least partially behind them, it makes sense to limit kids’ and teens’ smartphone use. As with any intervention, the risks of doing something versus doing nothing must be considered. There doesn’t seem to be much risk involved in limiting smartphone use to 90 minutes a day or less. However, doing nothing and having teens continue to spend six-plus hours a day with new media risks having these negative mental health trends continue.” It would be an improbable feat to remove technology from our life all together, but the ability to limit it and increase social involvement for younger generations could definitely be done. Before you take on this adventure, I’d wonder how much time you spend on your device versus how much time your child spends. I’d guess they’re spending far much more time. Well would you look at that? I got a Tweet.
