Around Edmond
Hi everyone and welcome to the Christmas Issue of EdmondActive Magazine! I look forward to this issue every year, and sadly when it’s in production, many things change quickly and or events are canceled that it never has all of the things in it that I had originally intended. This year, one of the things I was looking forward to was the Electric Lights Parade. Just before Thanksgiving, the City’s Marketing Coordinator announced the City was no longer going to put this event on, however, was replacing the City’s Christmas Parade with Luminance - An Enchanted Stroll, a walk through light display with the Mayor’s Tree Lighting at Mitch Park which happened on December 2nd and the display will be available for viewing throughout December. It is located in the baseball field in Mitch Park, near the Edmond Outdoor Ice Rink. This event will be evolving as years pass. My only disappointment is not being able to spend some time in Downtown Edmond when it’s cold getting hot chocolate while watching the Parade. Let’s all get behind this new event and see where it goes! This issue of EdmondActive features gift giving ideas from our retailers and of course, in it’s 9th season, we offer a guide to some of the best Christmas light shows and neighborhoods where you can drive by to view them. In 2009, this seemed like such a funny idea, but the reception from residents has been off the charts! If you can’t find a copy of this issue, you can view the guide on your mobile device with our digital issue. Some of you were so upset when the Arcadian Inn Bed & Breakfast came to an end last fall. No worries, as seen on our
cover, as the Arcadian tradition is alive and well at Arcadian Getaways Country Cottages! Our annual Christmas cover is always something that reminds us of tradition or that is unique, and the Christmas trees inside of each of the Arcadian Getaways cottages remind us of the tradition that the Arcadian Bed & Breakfast brought to Edmond for 26 years. Take a look and consider booking a cottage during the holidays at www. ArcadianGetaways.com. Be sure to check out Local Flavor for Arcadian Innkeeper Martha Hall’s Christmas Cookie recipe, and amazing Cranberry BBQ Meatballs from Millie’s Table and TallGirl Food’s fresh made pasta, both found at Millie’s Table in Homestead Center on Danforth west of Santa Fe, next to Eileen’s Cookies. In this month’s City Buzz, read how Citizen’s Bank of Edmond donated 116 turkeys to this year’s Edmond Community Thanksgiving Dinner held at the UCO Nigh Center. Their amazing giving spirit is such a blessing to our community. Also, find out how Citizen’s customer’s will be receiving cash rewards until December 31, 2017 and about specials from Pole Position Raceway. Thanks again for picking up the print edition of the magazine! My hopes are that you have a wonderful Christmas season with family and friends, and enjoy yourself. Be sure to follow EdmondActive at Instagram, Facebook and at Twitter, and I will see all of you around Edmond! Sherri

@citizensedmond DONATES 116 TURKEYS TO EDMOND COMMUNITY THANKSGIVING DINNER Yearly tradition for community bank helps feed 3,500 on Thanksgiving EDMOND, Okla. (Nov. 17, 2017) – Citizens Bank of Edmond has donated 116 turkeys to the Edmond Community Thanksgiving Dinner in an effort to celebrate 116 years in business. This is the seventh consecutive year Citizens Bank as contributed to this organization. Earlier today, eight bankers from Citizens Bank of Edmond met early at Crest Foods to collect the turkeys and then delivered them to the First Presbyterian Church, who started this initiative in 1981. “We consider it our calling to serve our community and are truly happy to support the Edmond Community Thanksgiving Dinner through the donation of 116 turkeys,” said Jill Castilla, president and CEO of Citizens Bank of Edmond. “But what’s even more special is seeing our team serve with one another and their families on Thanksgiving Day at the big Thanksgiving dinner!” The Edmond Community Thanksgiving Dinner is served at the University of Central Oklahoma on Thanksgiving Day from 11:00am to 3:00pm. Several hundred volunteers are expected to serve more than 3,500 meals on Thanksgiving Day.

CHRISTMAS COOKIES
By Martha Hall, Arcadian Innkeeper Nothing says the holidays like Christmas Cookies. Remember the flour all over the counter, the floor and you! Fingers stained with food coloring as you frosted a snowman or Christmas tree? Making Christmas sugar cookies should be part of every child’s Christmas memories! The recipes and shapes vary, but the love and tradition go on and on. Growing up in the 60’s, every Christmas meant making the cookie nativity set with Mama’s red plastic cookie cutters. Mama had this special recipe for sour cream sugar cookies that she added a dash of nutmeg to. We carefully cut the cookies out, baked them and let them cool while we made a full spectrum of colors in frosting. There were lots of Christmas shapes, a gift, a wreath, Santa, the ornament etc, but my favorite was baby Jesus with Mary and Joseph, the shepherd, the wisemen along with a donkey. Mama gave us powdered sugar icing and butter knives, so the frosting wasn’t exactly wonderful. My first Christmas as a newlywed wife, I promptly created my first cookie nativity displayed on a branch as a vignette. Since they weren’t to be eaten anyway, I left them modern and unfrosted. I felt they
looked better that way. Over the last 25 years, I’ve collect these special red plastic cookie cutters in many shapes, including Daffy Duck! They originated in Enid, Oklahoma in 1947. HRM was the original brand. They are made and sold by Cookie Craft now. I often come home with another tucked in my bags. The jars of clear red cookie cutters adorn my pantry now. I’ve already collected a nativity set for each daughter-in-law. I have enough for the grandchildren to have their own too when they grow up. It’s my grandma tradition to have the grandchildren over for an evening of baking cookies and frosting them. Letting the children pick their favorite shapes and colors. Grandma is over there though, gently cutting her baby Jesus out for this year’s nativity.Grandpa Gary is stalking the counter for an opportune moment to steal a bite. He’s waiting right now for you to finish reading this so he can grab a camel. Now would be a good time to share his favorite song. Old-Fashioned Sour Cream Cookies I’ve combined my mother’s recipe with the recipe that came with the HRM Red Cookie Cutters.
Local Flavor Cream together 1/2 cup Butter Flavor Crisco 1 cup sugar Add and beat well 2 eggs Sift together in another bowl 1/4 tsp. nutmeg 2 tsp. baking powder 3 1/2 cup flour Add dry ingredients above alternately with sour cream to egg and butter mixture. 1/2 cup sour cream Shape into mound and wrap in plastic wrap. Chill for at least 1 hour or longer. When you are ready to roll out your dough, “flour” the counter with powdered sugar! Roll dough until it is 1/4” thick. Dip cookie cutters in powdered sugar each time and cut out desired shapes. Place on lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake at 375° for 8 minutes Frosting: 1 egg white with 1 cup powdered sugar. Beat til well blended and thick enough to pour. Divide into several bowls to make different colors. Use paint brushes to apply colors.

Life Happens Is Counseling Forever? By: Audrey Woods, EFC Staff Therapist
Perhaps you are considering starting counseling. You’d really like to work on some life issues, but you have questions. For example, how long will this take? Days, weeks, months, years? The answer to your questions is, of course, it depends… We in the mental health field are tirelessly working to put ourselves out of the job. From the get-go, our goal for you when you enter our office is for you not to need to enter our office. While it is completely normal to require extra support for whatever your issue(s), no, counseling is not forever. Or at least it shouldn’t be. A brief caveat: In some cases, counseling can be an intensive and long process. For example, the treatment of certain personality disorders or other psychoses in which the person’s perception of themselves, others, or the world is not based in reality. These people may require fairly consistent ongoing treatment. If everyone’s clinical needs were on a spectrum, there would be extremes at both ends: people who never need to step foot in the door of a counselor’s office and people who will always have both feet in the door. Again, the majority of you will fall in the middle of that spectrum. So things like anxiety and depression (two of the most common reasons people seek counseling) usually have a shelf-life of sorts, meaning they too will pass (with a lot of work and dedication on your part). I say again without the parenthesis to be sure I’m not misunderstood, while most mental health issues will resolve, they will not do so without considerable effort on your part both in and out of session. However, the American Psychological Association (APA) reported around twenty percent of clients end therapy prematurely (Chamberlin, 2015). Maybe they come once or twice or even a few times. But after a number of weeks, they simply ghost counseling (meaning they
fall off the face of the planet without so much as a goodbye text) or they pluck up and leave a break-up voicemail. So what’s this magical balance I’m asking you to find between a lifer-client and a two-weeker-client? While I can’t give you an exact number of months or years therapy is supposed to take, it should end when both the client and clinician agree that goals have been met (What? We’re supposed to have goals? That’s for another article). The APA reported one of the most common reasons for terminating therapy before it is successfully completed is that people have unreasonable expectations for the rate at which things are supposed to get better. Again, there is no exact timeline this process is supposed to take but suffice it to say that it’s usually months, not weeks. Sometimes years. Logically, the more severe your issue, the more time it will likely take to work through. Usually your sessions will start weekly and then begin to spread out to bi-weekly, monthly, and so on. Even after termination, it is normal to have a check-up of sorts every now and again as things come up. So remember, we’re not miracle workers able to cure your stuff in a matter of minutes, but we’re also working really hard to not see you anymore. Edmond Family Counseling is committed to providing counseling and educational programs to individuals, families, and groups in Edmond and surrounding communities. We serve as a professional referral source for Edmond schools, churches, Edmond Juvenile Court, area health clinics, hospitals, and other… edmondfamily.org
