Simple Spring Cleaning In all of our efforts to start each new year off with a cleaner more organized vibe, January and February are the two months that most of us, regardless of age, feel the necessity to clean up and/or organize our living and work spaces. There are local organizational resources available to help you if you are able to afford these services, and Lifesquire is a popular, and locally owned resource. Lifesquire can help you declutter and sell off the remains of this cleaning effort, and Lifesquire can also help with so many other tasks to make daily living manageable, when your schedule is packed. For more information about Lifesquire’s services, visit www.Lifesquire.com However, if you cannot afford these services currently, there are some great tips out there that are definitely worth sharing.
After scouring many articles on this topic from across the country while getting over the flu the first week of this year, which honestly made me want to get rid of everything I had touched, the main topic that has been most popular across the country and editorial board is achieving less not more and how to keep your space really clean regularly. Achieving less without giving up necessities and only retaining your favorite things will help keep your surroundings orderly throughout the year. I did this in 2014, and perhaps overshot the goal, which has me now searching for all the photographic textural and background items I lost in that exercise. However 3 years later, I am continuing to find my effort created a specific place for everything, whether for EdmondAc-
tive Magazine, or for my personal belongings, which appears to help my life move more smoothly, at least visually. If you are changing up your décor and furniture, the best way to unload the extra is by contacting a consignment shop to sell it for you. Locally, we have a few, and if you follow EdmondActive regularly on social networks like Instagram, you have heard of 2 Doors Down. Teri and Staci, the owners of 2 Doors Down at 15020 Bristol Park Boulevard just off of 33rd Street, can help with design, the sale of your gently used furniture and accessories, and perhaps you’ll be able to find upscale pieces at their store that are new to you! And, if you find you are looking to change your entire décor concept and want less but with big impact, or just need
06 edmondactive.com
MyHome a bit of design help, be sure to stop by EmoryAnne Interiors at 150th & just east of Santa Fe. And then, there is keeping it all neat and clean. If you can afford a housekeeper, you’re lucky, and if you can’t, keep reading. Finding a great schedule to complete cleaning tasks is key, especially when you have kids, a husband and/or pets combined with a busy schedule outside of your home. Real Simple Magazine gave the best basic schedule I could find nationwide, which they gave me permission to reprint for you. If you have a home larger than my current home, and perhaps you aren’t perfect at keeping your home in immaculate condition, I hope this is helpful for you, especially when you get the heads up that someone is coming over for a visit giving you maybe about 10 minutes to tidy up. One of the biggest time wasters when straightening up is that we tend to go back to the same spot multiple times. We find a misplaced item on one side of the room, and cross the room to put it back where it belongs, only to end up getting distracted by another out of place belonging, or a spill that needs cleaning, or dust that needs wiping. Divide the room into a clock, with your door or sink at 12 o’ clock. As you work, move around the room clockwise, guaranteeing that each area will only be visited a single time. When you arrive at each segment of the room, return any collected items that belong there, and save items that belong in another room for later. Here are 6 steps to help guide you through to power clean your space. 1. Set your time for 10 minutes. Grab your supplies: a laundry basket, dampened cloth, lint roller, recycling bag, and garbage bag.
2. Starting at 12 o’ clock, pick up all items you can see that are not in their place. If they belong in the room, place them in the basket and pull them out when you reach that particular space in the room. If the item is garbage or recycling, you already know what to do. Anything that is out of place and belongs in another room can go in the laundry basket to be dealt with at a later time. 3. Use the cloth to do any quick cleans. Wipe away a fingerprint, touch up a dust ring, remove a scuff mark on the wall. 4. Line up all items parallel or perpendicular and straighten everything. So if you have stacks of paper, straighten them. If you have a lampshade tilted, center it. These are the visual cues that everything is tidy. 5. Take a moment to fold blankets, fluff pillows, and remove lint from the seats with a lint roller. 6. Sweep and vacuum to remove any fallen dust or lint and this final step should wait until all dusting and wiping
have occurred. These 6 steps only take no more than 10 minutes, can be done before a surprise visit or even daily to keep your weekly and monthly cleaning to a minimum, and help keep you more organized with almost everything being kept in its place, with minimum effort.
Why simplify? People juggling work, home life and other commitments can feel frazzled. Creating some margins gives us time to breathe, to love and to be creative. “Margins” include a gap in the schedule, an empty shelf or a clear email inbox. Simplifying life at home requires ruthless cleaning out, whether it’s a drawer, a closet, the photos taking up space on your phone or time commitments on your schedule. The thought of where to begin can be daunting. After you get your house in order it will inspire you to create margins in other parts of your life. It will happen naturally. Other ways to help keep clutter at bay are:
edmondactive.com 07
MyHome 1. Grab a trash bag. “Go through all the rooms in your house and look for trash,” Ley says. “You’ll be surprised at what’s just lying around.” Whether it’s expired coupons, boxes, empty shampoo bottles in the shower, dry-cleaning tags, a dead plant or wastebaskets that need emptying, just making this first step will make you feel better. You may even decide you’re ready to make a second round with a light look for items you can donate, like books you’re never going to read again. This will ease you into the process. 2. Stop stuff from coming in. You can get started by curbing junk mail. Register at DMAchoice.org to help stop the flow, and then take it a step further. If you notice certain companies sending you catalogs or mail you did not request, too often, take the time to call them up individually and get off the mailing lists. 3. Attack kitchen drawers. This one is easy — there is so much extra stuff you don’t need in the kitchen. Take everything out and you’ll realize you don’t need three carrot peelers or two ice-cream scoops. Keep a donation box or bag nearby so you can put extras in there right away. When you’re done, put the box or bag in your car so you’ll have it handy next time you drive by Goodwill.
5. Get a handle on laundry. This is one of my favorite tips that I learned from my grandmother. Start a new habit of throwing one load of laundry in the washing machine every morning. This keeps you from having to tackle a mountain of it on Sunday. 6. Turn off the noise. Make more time for family and friends by turning off mindless TV, letting go of your phone and rethinking your social media habits. There are things from your life that don’t have to be out there for all to see. When you post it all you start to lose intimacy of your private life. Constantly thinking about our posts and documenting everything takes time and focus away from what we are actually experiencing. To ease yourself into a new perspective, try taking a complete break for 24 hours — or better yet, an entire weekend. After a three-day break I felt refreshed and was able to have a fresh perspective
when it comes to social media. If you try this even once, you’ll realize you’re not missing anything, and it will change your perspective. If this doesn’t work during the week due to necessity of social media for a lot of our daily work, try putting your social apps into a separate folder and turn off their notifications, so you can be intentional while they are open while reducing the stress caused by notifications. 7. Attack the closet. Now that you’ve got your feet wet and eliminated some distractions, you’re ready to tackle your closet. We have an emotional connection to some of our clothes that makes it hard to get rid of them. We think ‘when I get skinnier these pants will fit,’ or ‘this doesn’t look good on me, but I paid too much for it so I have to keep it.’ Let go of those kinds of thoughts. Then cherry-pick only your favorite things that make you feel confident and put the rest into the donation bag. 8. Take stock of what’s in your linen
4. Organize your food. Once you’re done with the drawers and cabinets, attack the food in the pantry, refrigerator and spice cabinet. (You can break this down and shoot for doing just one of these a day for a while.) Take it all out and chuck anything that’s expired or stale. If there’s an ingredient that works only for that impossible recipe you’re never going to whip up or is something your family just won’t eat, put it in a bin for the food bank.

MyHome closet and medicine cabinets. Figure out what’s essential, what you need to toss and what needs restocking. Take expired medications to the pharmacy for safe disposal. 9. Clean out your computer. Delete unnecessary files, clean off your computer’s desktop, empty that little wastebasket, complete your updates and then restart your machine. Also, clear the photos and videos from your phone and computer, uploading keepers to an online storage service (a.k.a. the cloud) and creating a family yearbook every year. Finally, just as you did with your snail mail, prevent more junk from coming in by unsubscribing from those that email too often, setting up Smart Mailboxes to have tempting deals stashed out of your main inbox. Try Unroll.me
ty. Let an empty shelf you’ve cleared off breathe awhile. Your first instinct is to go buy something to fill it, but let it just sit there empty, even though that can feel oddly uncomfortable. This is how it feels to have a margin at first, whether it’s an empty shelf or a free hour in your schedule. If you take the time to figure it out, these things will fill up in a better way naturally. Other chock-full areas can spread out a bit, or something interesting and unexpected will turn up to place there. For local stores that carry great organizational items, try Serendipity Market at 917 E Danforth for vintage options, Emory Anne Interiors at 150th & Santa Fe for unique organizational pieces and design ideas, Hobby Lobby on Danforth and 33rd and Broadway, and Target on Bryant, south of Bryant also have great basics, like woven baskets and laundry sorting pieces.

SALATA at Memorial and May My husband Chris and I are moving toward living a more healthy lifestyle, which really we have been trying to do since 2009. We have tried to find a place to get a salad (just basic, nothing gourmet) since we moved to Oklahoma 13 years ago. Knowing Cool Greens is locally owned, we tried it many times, but the lack of options for just the basics saw us not visit as often. Salata at May, just at the sw corner of Memorial, is a franchise chain, but we tried it out of cutriosity. The decor is simple, and the food very fresh. No preservatives in their fresh dressings made daily, many options for greens, and other additions to your salad, including freshly made shrimp, salmon and other meats for the price of inexpensive fast food made this a new staple over the locally owned Cool Greens, as it seems the selection is more broad. When the Edmond location opens at Bryant and 2nd Street, it will immediately become a go to for many in Edmond, due to a great selection, numerous healthy options of lettuce, toppings, meat and fish, dressings and their moderate pricing makes this franchise a great alternative to fast food.

EdmondPeople Interview With Edmond Chamber Of Commerce President,
Sherry Jordan By Trevor Hultner
Sherry Jordan is entering her second year as the president of the Edmond Chamber of Commerce. Under her leadership, the Chamber introduced some new policies and events in 2017, and 2018 looks to be a continuation of that trend. We sat down with Sherry in January and asked her to give us a look at the year ahead. This interview has been edited for clarity and concision.

EdmondPeople EA: We wanted to touch base with the Chamber to see what kind of events and programs you have in store for the year. SJ: Perfect! To start, we had our first annual Dancing With the Stars in 2017, so in September 2018 we’ll have our second annual Dancing With the Stars. We haven’t picked the judges or the dancers yet, but that was our big thing to do last year. Dancing With the Stars was a trial event that replaced an annual auction, and it was really fun, it was a really great event. We’re really looking forward to that again. As far as our programming goes, Edmond Young Professionals is starting a new mentoring program, where we’ll be matching mentors up with our Young Professionals members. We’ll also look at matching our young professionals up as mentors to some college-age students. We’re also looking at starting a diversity and inclusion council. We feel that there is
some work that could be done in that area in our community. And so we’re going to tackle that. We’re not exactly sure what that’s going to look like yet, but that’s on our list of things to do. We have restructured our membership dues and how we treat our pricing and memberships and sponsorships, so that’s a big thing for us. And we’re going to be supporting progression of the Performing Arts Center. We’re not saying “Yes, it should be built,” or “No, it shouldn’t,” but we’re going to be supportive of progressing on with the next phase. That’s the site selection, where the consultants are going to go out and come back with a recommendation of three or four different sites that it could potentially be placed on. And then from there, we’ll be working to coordinate ownership between the City of Edmond and the University of Central Oklahoma. The Performing Arts Center could be a really good economic
driver for Edmond and specifically for Downtown Edmond, so that’s something we’re going to be supportive of and be a voice for. Our main purpose here is to be a voice for business and to promote economic prosperity for Edmond, so that’s definitely something that would bring in some good economic growth here. It is an election year, so we will be doing candidate forums as needed. The filing dates haven’t all come in yet to see who is going to be running, but we probably won’t do a Gubernatorial candidate forum; I’m sure there will be a lot of those across the state. We’ll instead most likely focus on some of the other races. We’re also going to be doing two publications this year. One is called the Voice, which is basically a summarization of our programs over the year. It’s got a section about our oldest members, and that kind of thing. We’re looking at doing a workforce-centered magazine that will be
edmondactive.com 13
EdmondPeople
new in 2018, that could be used to recruit companies to come to Edmond, as well as highlight companies that are already here and the type of workforce that they need. On top of that, we’re going to highlight what the different educational entities around here are doing to help educate that workforce. So whether that’s UCO, or whether that’s Francis Tuttle, not everybody needs a four-year college degree. There are a lot of workforce needs out there for things other than that, so we’re looking at doing a magazine on that. We’re going to be developing policy on issue advocacy. We already have policy that we follow if a candidate wants us to endorse them, but one of the things we learned in the Spring Creek issue [from last year] was that it would probably be a good idea to have a set of guidelines that we use when we decide whether or not we’re going to support an issue. One of
the things that was really frustrating for us was that the developer didn’t get out in front of the media like he needed to, and we couldn’t necessarily do that effectively for him. So just some different guidelines to kind of protect us in the future on issues that we want to advocate for. EA: What are some broader goals and priorities for the Chamber in 2018? SJ: The first one is small business. We want to provide educational programs, peer support, recognition, and various networking opportunities to our smallbusiness members. Over 85 percent of our members have less than 10 employees. Our next priority is to develop the next generation of leaders. The main goal of the Young Professionals program is to attract and retain young professionals to the Edmond area. We do that through our Young Professionals program, as well as
our Adult Leadership Edmond program. We also have a Youth Leadership Edmond program for high school juniors. Our third priority is networking. We provide our members opportunities to develop business relationships. You’re much more likely to do business with someone you’ve met before, who you know. On top of that, we want people to keep their business transactions local. And when I say local I don’t mean that that doesn’t mean they can’t go to the local Target. Our fourth priority is government relations. Advocacy at the governmental level is very important to us, and we do that a lot at the local level, but also at the state and the national level. The fifth is community outreach and membership development. We want to be a catalyst for the critical issues that face our members and our community. Things
14 edmondactive.com
EdmondPeople
like the Performing Arts Center fall into that kind of category. And then we have three strategic goals which are a little bit more specific, which are: deliver value to our members, advance community excellence, and maintain organizational relevance. The Chamber has had to evolve over the years, because people who are between the ages of 20 and 35 are a lot different from people who are my age, and you’re not looking for in a Chamber what I was looking for in a Chamber at, say, 26 years old. We have to evolve and we have to make sure that we’re meeting the demands of the decision-makers and businesses. We can’t just cater to the 50-year-olds. EA: What does outreach start to look like for the Edmond Chamber? Well, one aspect of this is our Diversity and Inclusion Council. I think one thing
that’s really important to younger people and Millennials in general is that they want everyone to feel included. They don’t like formal, stuffy sit-down meetings. They like more meetup-type situations. Our Edmond Young Professionals group has a Lunch Bunch, where it’s a very casual affair. We set a date and a time, but it’s not something where you’re going and you’re sitting and you’re listening to a speaker and then you’re leaving. It’s more networking, it’s more connecting, it’s more involved. And then also, with our Edmond Young Professionals events, we team up with a non-profit. For example, for our Christmas party that we did for them we teamed up with the HOPE Center. And we said, “If you want drink tickets, you have to bring at least a $15 gift card to somewhere that a teenager would like to shop, so that we can donate it to the HOPE Center for
Christmas.” Because teenagers are the ones who get left out a lot of times at Christmastime. And the HOPE Center’s like, “yeah, we can get stuff for young kids all day long, but it’s the teenagers we really need help for.” And the people who are in our Young Professionals group, they like that. They like to think, “Okay, I’m not just going to some party and drinking, I’m going somewhere to help, you know, a non-profit in the community do something for other people. We want to be bold leaders, we want to have positive change, and we want to have energy and excitement. I think if you’re doing the right thing that those people will seek you out. EA: Thank you for speaking with us. SJ: Thank you!

LifeHappens Are Facebook Algorithms Damaging? By: John Goetz, LPC
Hello all. I was listening to NPR one morning and heard a story about the development of Facebook. The discussion was about the algorithms that went into the creation of Facebook and how it was designed to ensure its users would continue to engage with the program by eliciting a small dopamine response in our brains; a small hit of pleasure to ensure we would keep posting and commenting. One of the earlier developers is so concerned he stated that he will not let his children use social media and avoids using it himself. This is the same reward system that is naturally activated by things that are good for us like food and friendships, and is activated in even higher doses by alcohol, gambling, and other vices. Apparently all forms of social media makes use of this triggering of a dopamine release, thus keeping us engaged with our screens in much the same way a drug might compel us. Now in a way this is nothing new. People have been boasting/posting, and gossiping/responding since time began. We can just do it instantly now and receive instant feedback. In the spirit of the holidays I thought it would be appropriate to talk about something that really matters, relationships. Waylon Jennings once said, “We’ve been so busy keepin up with the Jones, Four car garage and we’re still building on, Maybe it’s time we got back to the basics of love.” Media of all various shapes and sizes from traditional print ads to bots on social media issue a siren song of want and desire, promising fulfillment is a credit card number away. We know this is a lie but we desire/ covet anyway. One small suggestion is that during the holidays maybe we can get back to the basics of connecting with family and friends face to face. Social scientists know that the attention of another human being is profoundly reinforcing. Even our four legged friends
crave attention. A recent study at Emory University has shown that reward systems in a dog’s brain will light up as strong or stronger in response to praise as it does to food. If you want to experience some true Christmas cheer how about we turn away from the screens in our lives and connect with family and friends over milk and cookies or (insert your choice of food and beverage here). Give yourself and others the gift of spending some time in face to face conversations. According to the researchers at Emory this should provide a double shot to the reward system in our brains, combining good company and good food.
