Susan Foskin: Paper Arts
in the December of 2014. It officially became mine last Thursday, Feb. 1st.
as you need or as many days as you need that week.
I sat down and had a conversation with Susan Foskin, owner of Edmond’s Paper Arts Paper Studio, at 632 W Edmond Rd. about her journey leading her to her recent ownership of the shop, and I asked her to explain what it’s all about - for those who are new to Paper Arts. When Susan isn’t at the shop, she is usually hard at work in her home studio creating new items for the shop, or coming up with new ideas for classes! Here’s what Susan had to say:
EA: What is Paper Arts? Susan: Paper Arts is a Scrapbooking and cardmaking boutique that offers top of the line, unique products, classes, one on one instruction and ready made gifts.
EA: Tell us what is the most important aspect of running Paper Arts for you. Susan: To me, I want people to have a Happy Place to escape to and relax. I want them to know that they can come to Paper Arts to ask how-to questions, take classes, create and laugh with friends, or just sit in the quiet for a bit if they need. So creating an environment that allows that, while also providing product that is unique, sometimes exclusive to Paper Arts, is an extremely important part of my job.
EA: Tell us who you are and when you became involved with Paper Arts. Susan: I am a Christ-loving, dog-hugging, 2-time stroke surviving, wife to an amazing man, local small business owner. I became involved with Paper Arts in 2014 while recovering from my second stroke. I became involved in day to day operations
EA: Does Paper Arts offer space for creating projects? Susan: Yes, we have a work area that people are welcome to use during regular business hours. EA: Does Paper Arts offer classes? Susan: We offer 2-3 classes/week. However, I have a different spin on classes. Rather than have a set time and date for everybody to come, you have the entire week. So anytime that I am open during that week you can come work on your class. I just ask you start it at least 1 hour before closing. You can take as long
You can find Susan at the Paper Arts Studio Tuesdays 10-5:30, Wednesdays & Fridays 10-6, Thursdays 10-8 and Saturdays 10-4, and at Facebook at Paper Arts, Instagram at Paper Arts Edmond and Twitter at PaperArts632. You can call the shop at 405-330-2055.

Edmond PD Motorcycle Survival Course By Chris Hultner
A couple years ago I decided to buy a motorcycle for my commute to work. I grew up riding dirt bikes and still had a deep-seated love for motorcycles, but I vowed from an early age never to ride them on the street; it was too dangerous, I thought. Now that I’m older I find the need for speed is not something I’m after and maybe a more mellow “me” would be fine on a street bike. So I purchased a used Suzuki DR650 Dual Sport motorcycle, something I could ride on the street and - when the mood struck me - in the dirt. After a few months of riding the DR650 to work I experienced my first crash. I was going around a corner and my front wheel hit some loose sand while I applied the front brake. The front end washed out and I went down hard. My injuries were a broken shoulder and a bruised ego. Crashing is part of the game when you
ride a motorcycle. Everyone who rides has a crash story. Now I had mine. I actually thought about selling the bike after the crash, but once the pain in my shoulder subsided a little I realized that I genuinely loved riding my motorcycle. If I was going to continue riding on the street, however, I needed to take a motorcycle safety course to better arm myself against the perils that can come with street riding. After a little research I found that OSU offers a three-day basic rider course for $240.00. While that was a viable option, I felt I needed something a little more substantial than a basic course. Then I found the Edmond Police Department’s Civilian Motorcycle School. According to the City of Edmond’s web page for the program, the free Civilian Motorcycle School was initiated “in an effort to make city streets and highways safer for all.” Edmond PD got approval for the program from the Oklahoma
Highway Safety Office and the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety, and the state awarded Edmond $150,000 in grants to make sure the program had all the proper equipment: a mobile classroom, instructor pay and, in addition to Edmond, class locations in Lawton and Durant. Did I mention it was free? Jackpot!
What To Expect The Level 1 class I took was a six-hour course centered mostly around riding basics, with a little classroom time between exercises. The first thing we learned was how to properly pick up a motorcycle. For anyone who’s tipped over a full dresser, this lesson was very helpful. Next we went into a throttle and clutch control exercise to learn how to control our bikes at the slowest pace just by using the clutch and throttle. Keeping your balance at a very slow pace is not as easy as it may seem.
14 edmondactive.com
LocalServices The next exercise dealt with braking as fast as you can in the shortest distance possible. This was all about reflexes and control under extreme braking. After that, we worked on weaving in and out of cones while keeping our eyes on the horizon. When doing this exercise your natural instinct is to look down at the cone in front of you, but by raising your eyes and looking ahead you can better judge what’s coming. Clutch and throttle control came into play big time during this exercise. After the single-row slalom course we worked on offset cones to weave in and out of; kind of like riding around parked cars. The emphasis on this task was to let your head and eyes lead you around the obstacle by looking through the turns and not down at the street. The final exercise of the course was the hardest of them all--executing a lowspeed U-turn inside a 20-foot radius. To do this you must draw from everything you learned during the day and put it to practical use. The Takeaway So the big question here is: was this class worth it? Absolutely! When most people get on a motorcycle they spend the first few months on the road trying to figure things out and get comfortable riding in traffic. That’s what I did at first and it was kind of scary. This class armed me with a new skillset and more confidence. I should have taken it before I started out

LocalServices on the road, and if you are contemplating getting a motorcycle, I would absolutely recommend taking this class before hitting the road. One of the things I found the most interesting was the number of repeat customers taking the course. About half the riders in attendance had already been through the class. For a lot of them it was a chance to blow off the cobwebs of a long winter of no riding. For others it was a chance to hone their skills. It’s also a great way to mingle with the local motorcycle community. I’m already planning on taking the Level 2 course and I’ll definitely do it again next Spring. LifeHappens Life Happens By Quinton Ellis, LPC
As a person, I can offer you no comfort about events like the recent school shooting in Florida, As a therapist, I may, in some respects, be able to offer even less. I have a master’s degree in counseling psychology and years of experience in my field – but in many regards, your guess is as good as mine as to how these tragedies happen. Surely, some people and agencies were asleep at their desks, but I also imagine that a lot of people bent over backwards for that young man and now, despite all their efforts, they will have those attempts grinding away at their hearts and minds forever. As I reflect, I do not think my involvement could have saved those innocent kids at Douglas High School in Parkland. How do you get those thoughts out of someone’s head? Talking someone back from suicide is hard enough, and no sure thing, but homicide? Mass homicide? That is indicative of a mind swimming way out there where the sharks are. We can certainly debate how he got that far out, but one thing is clear for mental health professionals, we’re going to need a much bigger boat. All this is to say that there are unique limitations to mental health therapy that we cannot wish away. Indeed, all helping professions operate under the premise that the person you are helping actually wants your help – that they want to get better, or healthier, or closer to normal. Evidently, this young man had several points of contact with mental health professionals prior to turning 18. I feel relatively comfortable assuming that he was an…unmotivated client/patient. Another of mental healthcare’s limitations is the legal limitation of what can and cannot be done and the subsequent timing of those actions. Even law enforcement has its hands tied. As I imagine the 39 times 911 was summoned to the murder’s home over the years, I am certain that several of the officials were frustrated, having looked him in the eye, and considering the circumstances, that they could not just build a prison around his home right at that moment. It seems, 99% of the time, we Americans can be and are proud of our rights and freedoms – that youthful mistakes, bad/dark jokes or threats are
not reasons to deprive someone of their long- term liberties. However, most everyone agrees that this person was truly dangerous, mainly because he told them repeatedly that he was dangerous. We do not imprison people for bleating about crimes they have not yet committed. It’s a wager we gladly accept until such a time as this, when even 1% feels like an impossible high price to pay for such ideals. I do actually have one suggestion – a plea really. If you do feel like a person is headed out to the shark infested waters, please document, in whatever way is available to you that person’s words and behaviors. Audio recording is ideal. Audio recording is passive while video is confrontational and likely to provoke the person you are scared of, or for into breaking…at least your phone. Your phone has a voice recorder, and you should become familiar with using it. They can do an excellent job of picking up voices even from your pocket at a considerable distance. Because sick and dangerous people are often not forthcoming about how sick and dangerous they are, these recordings (and other assorted documentation, eg. pictures of destruction, etc.) are essential to proving to therapists, doctors, and authorities, that this person poses a much greater threat to themselves or others than he or she is willing to amit. This can mean the difference between actual intervention and business as usual. For many reasons, I darkly suspect that there will be more rather than fewer of these kinds of horrors in our future. If you are looking for hope, as I am, there were at least two stories in recent weeks about foiled plots similar to the one in Florida. One of those would-be killers was reported by his own grandmother after she read his murder diary. I do wish all of the therapists in his prison luck, if there is such a thing for prison therapists. Please know, that our agency is deeply committed to furthering issues of mental health in the community.
