With so much negativity going on all around us daily, I have taken a hiatus from my online blog due to the affects this same negativity has had on me. Everyone seems grumpy and it isn’t just the full moon. I am thinking the loss of civility in politics, and basic human connection decreasing with online connectivity replacing it are having an affect on me that is quite profound. Several professionals I know have deleted Facebook personal profiles and some have deleted other network’s apps from their phone and life all together. They are saying their real life connections have improved and increased in quality. I would agree. I have been participating on social networks for 13 years for business. Our nationally distributed magazine was at its height of distribution internationally when social media had just taken a grip of younger users but also their parents who joined to keep an eye on their kids. When Facebook announced it had given away so much information on users, I actually laughed because I am pretty sure after 13 years on Facebook, my information had already been compromised, but to those who believed their information was secure, it was enough to send them away for a few months, if not semi permanently. I have to say, in my doing so within the last month or so, I have gotten a ton of work done, and planned out the next 4 issues of

Edmondactive, and have connected better with businesses and residents throughout our community. I will never leave social media, but the break was an eye opener for sure after being constantly connected for over a decade. Keep your eye out in upcoming issues, as I begin a new feature for those who are new to fitness named Get Fit OK! In my own weight loss endeavor over the last year and 2 months, I have lost 110+ lbs. My goal a year ago was to become strong and healthy for myself. I was able to do so on my own due to the amazing training I received 11 years ago from then physical trainer Chris Marlott. He gave me the tools to save myself from morbid obesity and I am going to share with those in the same position a series of locally owned gyms and fitness studios which I believe are credible, unique in their delivery of their specific services and have amazing customer service. I hope you enjoy this last summer issue of Edmondactive, and I’d like to thank all of you for your continued readership and following at Facebook, Instagram and Twitter and for visiting Edmondactive.com when you get the chance! Don’t forget to support our advertiser’s when you are out and about, too! Enjoy the last of summer and I’ll see you around Edmond! Sherri

OKC’s Metro OKC Metro Consignment Scene is

Booming! By Sherri Hultner After 10 years of observing Edmond and surrounding areas consignment scenes including thrift stores, I can say these types of stores are not fads and are here to stay. In 2009, there were a few spaces in the Metro, much less Edmond, to find a great bargain, however 9 years later that has definitely changed in favor of consumers. One particular shop in OKC that has stood the test of time, it seems, is Bad Granny’s in the Plaza District on 16th Street in Oklahoma City. There have many vendor’s who have resided inside this vendor outlet for the entirety of Bad Granny’s existence and for good reason, as their selection, albeit thrift store finds, are always trend relevant. Another newer space in OKC around 11th Street and Western, is the new Suited for Success retail store. This space is a thrift store; however, many high end products find their way into the

store benefiting the program for women “Suited for Success”. In addition, if you follow them at Facebook, you can get the inside scoop on their $5 sales, even on the highest end products. Think Jimmy Choo, Vince Camuto, etc. This Spring, after being targeted by Facebook for two different online thrift stores Swap.com and ThredUp.com, I decided to see if online thrift shopping was worth the effort and money versus Edmond’s two consignment shops Designing Sister’s on 33rd Street east of Broadway, Clothes Mentor next to Hobby Lobby on 33rd Street, and Edmond’s various thrift shops like Hopefully Yours just south of Danforth on Broadway, EARC in Downtown Edmond, and others. What I lacked over the last 4 years were shoes, and decidedly, with this accessory being the most expensive for women, this is what I concentrated on. I was shocked, for instance, on the same day, to find two different pairs Jimmy Choo’s in amazing condition for

sale, both under $100 at Clothes Mentor and Designing Sister’s. This happens often at these two fantastic stores. You can see the selection I found pictured, and all seven pairs came from the above stated stores all for under $60 for all of shoes pictured total. Brands like Anne Klein, Vince Camuto, Sam Edelman, JCrew, BCBGirls and Banana Republic. I chose these particular shoes because they were made with quality materials, were either very trendy or timeless, and because I walk so much, comfortable. The only difference I found from online thrift shopping versus in store shopping was that Thredup.com didn’t allow returns, didn’t state this fact anywhere on their site except buried in FAQ’s, and didn’t price items based on condition but rather on brand name. Due to this policy at Thredup.com, I would be much more inclined to suggest shopping locally, knowing you can touch and try on each product even if there is an all sales final policy.

Citizen’s Bank of Edmond’s July Heard on Hurd Sizzles in the Dog Days of Summer! Normally July bears the worst heat we see during mid summer, and this year Mother Nature was not letting up. You wouldn’t have known it though, due to extremely high attendance at this July’s Heard on Hurd family and dog friendly event! This month, Citizen’s Bank of Edmond hosted their 2nd Annual film festival inside of the new Vault 405 space. The event screened films from local short film producers inside of Vault 405, a new co working space powered by Citizen’s Bank of Edmond. Vault 405 is a diverse community of thinkers, doers and innovators from all verticals, offering each other encouragement, connections, and the power of combined resources. “We can’t believe it has already been an entire year since we hosted our first annual Film Festival” said Heard on Hurd creator and CEO of Citizen’s Bank of Edmond, Jill Castilla. “Inspired by deadCenter Film Festival and the local art scene continuously blowing us away with their talent, we believe there is no better way to support our local artists than to showcase their hard work and share it with our community at Heard on Hurd. The passion and entrepreneurship that these artists have perfectly exemplifies our purpose of creating Vault 405” said Castilla. The event’s musical talent, food trucks and all new Trade Post vendor’s along with Superhero’s ready for photos with the community led to the year’s most fun event yet! Be sure to attend the next event the third Saturday of August, and follow Heard on Hurd at Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to get the latest on upcoming events.

Downtown Edmond Pokémon GO Community Day Saturday August 11 Saturday, August 11 the Edmond Gaming Group will be hosting its monthly Community Day in the Citizens Bank of Edmond’s Lobby from 1 pm – 4 pm with food, refreshments, over $200 worth of raffle ticket prizes, and three hours of increased frequency for game players to catch August’s featured Pokémon “Eevee”, as well as the Pokémon’s chances to become shiny for the first time. Once players are at the event, they can check in through The Silph Road and receive a raffle ticket for entry into the prize drawings. Food and refreshments will be provided by Old School Bagel Café and McAlister’s. Edmond Gaming Group Badges, which are membership cards that have special discounts and deals from participating businesses, will also be for sale during the event. The monthly gatherings were started by the game’s founding company, Niantic, and are held in hundreds of cities all over the country. The Edmond Pokémon GO community group was started a little over a year ago by Registered Pokémon Professor, Lucas Officer. Players can also connect on the Discord server, EdmondGo, which is a messaging app that links the entire Pokémon GO community. “People use the Discord server daily to coordinate meet ups for raids around town. I would say we see anywhere from 100-400 messages a day in the chat,” said founder of the local Community Days, Lucas Officer. ”We are up to over 900 members right now and we have seen over 200 people in attendance at our Community Days”. Officer has been involved in Pokémon since its beginnings in the 90s and has organized all of the additional public celebrations of the event in the Edmond community. Officer also runs and judges the local card game tournaments at Al’s Sports Cards. Sponsors of the event include Citizens Bank of Edmond, Al’s Sports Cards and Gaming, and Storm Brew Games

LocalPolitics Oklahoma Midterm Elections Preview By Trevor Hultner The midterm elections occurring later in 2018 are shaping up to be a watershed moment for our town, our state and our nation. Will our political landscape change in 2018, and if so, how much? Who will Edmondites choose to represent them? Regardless of where you fall on the political spectrum, it’s important to know who you will be able to choose from. GOVERNOR The first round of primary elections has occurred. Democrats have chosen their contender. Republicans will have to choose between former Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett and challenger Kevin Stitt on August 28. Let’s take a look at all our candidates:

OKLAHOMA DEMOCRATIC PARTY Drew Edmondson is the Oklahoma Democratic nominee for Governor, winning a primary race against Rep. Constance Johnson, 61.38 percent to 31.62 percent, according to the Oklahoma State Election Board. A

former state Attorney General from 1995 to 2011, Edmondson is running on a platform focused on education spending, fixing the state budget and economic development. Edmondson last ran for Governor, unsuccessfully, in 2010. As Oklahoma Attorney General, Edmondson was involved in a nationwide lawsuit with other Attorneys General against the tobacco industry, helped to reform the death penalty appeals process in the state following the 1995 Murrah Building bombing, and filed an indictment against former WorldCom CEO Bernard Ebbers in 2003 shortly before federal authorities brought charges against Ebbers in 2004. Edmondson was criticized by consumer rights activists for his 2007 indictment of Paul Jacob and two other individuals on the grounds that they used individuals from out-of-state to collect signatures for a ballot initiative. In 2018, Edmondson has been a supporter of the teacher walkout, telling Oklahoma Watch in April, “There is long-term damage being done to our state every day because we don’t fully fund public education. The responsibility for that falls squarely into the lap of the Legislature. Teachers recognize that. Parents recognize that. Our business community, which relies on the availability of an educated workforce, recognizes that. It seems that the last people to come to this awakening are Governor Fallin and her legislative caucus.” Edmondson has also vowed publicly to make state government dealings more transparent, appearing at a gubernatorial debate in May hosted by the University of Central Oklahoma and Freedom of Information Oklahoma.

OKLAHOMA REPUBLICAN PARTY Mick Cornett was, from March 2004 until April 2018, the longest-running Mayor of Oklahoma City and the first mayor to be elected to four terms. A former television journalist, Cornett’s tenure as mayor seems to be defined by a couple of major events: the passage and implementation of MAPS 3 in 2009; and the establishment of Oklahoma City as an NBA city with the purchase and arrival of the Thunder in 2008. Economic development was incredibly important for Cornett during his mayoral tenure, and it seems to be a main plank of his campaign

08 edmondactive.com

LocalPolitics for Governor. Of course, Cornett’s major challenge is rectifying issues his party created at the state level, a challenge he acknowledges. Many of his campaign promises, like raising teacher salaries to the national average with bonuses for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) educators, improved access to medical care across the state, transparent budget management, and fixing infrastructure, address these issues. Interestingly, when it came to funding, both of Cornett’s opponents, Kevin Stitt and Lt. Governor Todd Lamb, outraised him substantially. In the primaries, Cornett was able to neatly secure his position in the runoff by garnering 29 percent of the vote. Kevin Stitt is coming into politics straight out of an 18-year career as a mortgage lender magnate. Stitt is planning to bring his business experience to bear in the state government. According to Oklahoma Watch, his main goal is to “use performance metrics and audit every state agency.” Stitt wants to consolidate power into the Governor’s hands. One of his pledges on his website is “Give the governor more accountability to fire underperforming agency leaders that are in appointed positions.” His plan on education includes raising teacher pay to match the surrounding states’ pay as well as give bonuses to new teachers. Like Cornett, Stitt identifies as both prolife and pro-Second Amendment. OKLAHOMA LIBERTARIAN PARTY Chris Powell is a 911 dispatcher with the Oklahoma City Police Department and a member of the Oklahoma Libertarian Party for nearly 20 years. He has run for various state offices and has been at several points one of the most successful candidates from a third party in state history. He was the chairperson of the Libertarian Party from 2003 to 2005. edmondactive.com

Powell’s position on issues is more or less in lockstep with Libertarian Party platforms across the country. He wants to deregulate and localize education, while at the same time reprioritizing state spending “toward education first.” Oklahoma Watch reports that Powell is “in favor of decreasing tax credits and incentives and consolidating or eliminating certain state agencies to save money” before considering tax increases. Powell is also an advocate of criminal justice reform and was a supporter of SQ788, which legalized medical marijuana in the state. P o w e l l ’ s challenger in the runoffs, Rex Lawhorn, has been a member of every major party at one point or another. Lawhorn claims to be more of a “radical” Libertarian candidate than Powell. In 2016, Lawhorn was the director of the Our America Initiative organization, a

Libertarian advocacy group tied to the Gary Johnson presidential campaign. Lawhorn wants to consolidate school districts, hire more teachers in higher education, and push for more trade programs. He also supports the proliferation of alternatives to public school, like homeschooling, private schools and online classes. He wants to eliminate civil asset forfeiture, the full legalization of marijuana, open the governor’s office to the public every Friday and hold corporations and the state accountable in the event that they “violate the property or personal rights of any citizen.” Both the Republican and Libertarian party runoffs take place on August 28. Keep your eyes peeled to EdmondActive.com this fall for more information on local, county and state candidates.

LocalEdmond Oops I Arted Art Studio I recently sat down with Risa Wilkins, owner and artist at Oops I Arted, located at 15200 Traditions Blvd between Santa Fe and Western in Edmond. Risa is an amazing artist, and she is aiming to leave everyone who visits her art studio with the knowledge of creating art and love of art that only her creative perspective can bring. Here is more of our conversation to help you become acquainted with this wonderfully creative locally owned art studio: EA: Tell us a little bit about your teaching background and why you started Oops I Arted. Risa: My teaching background consists of teaching at Edmond Public Schools, Heritage Hall, Co -founder and Co-Director of Keystone Adventure School and Farm and the creation of Oops I Arted! I have always integrated arts into the curriculum within my classroom in every subject. I loved teaching and I loved art! I took every opportunity I was given to teach additional art classes, summer camps and after school art classes during my teaching career. It was a natural evolution to open an art studio for kids where they could experience all the wonders of creating art. I wanted to create a space for kids and adults to come and experience a stress-free and inspirational environment that they could have the opportunities to create and hang out. The result was an n eclectic and one of a kind, very whimsical studio. One that suits the needs of all artists. Whether they are looking for art classes for their kids, an art space or class for their creations, or just a friend or family night out. EA: What is Oops I Arted? Risa: Oops I Arted is a large, whimsical and inviting art studio for all age groups. It offers art classes for children, adults, families, large groups, small groups, special projects, teambuilding events, and summer classes and camps as well as a beautiful space for special events! I offer both group classes and individual classes for children adults and special groups. You can have Oops I Arted host birthday parties, special events of any type, group events for friends and families. The studio also has a beautiful space large enough to host parties and special events. I have hosted wedding receptions, showers, pop up shops and even pod casts. A delightful and inspiring space for all kinds of events. EA: What else would you like EA readers to know about Oops I Arted? Risa: The most important thing I would like Edmondactive readers to know about Oops I Arted is that it is for everyone! I have done art with littles up to 90-year-old adults. There is no right or wrong when it comes to creative expression. Oops I Arted is a place created for all to enjoy and experience a wonderful time! You can reserve space in upcoming classes or book private parties, corporate events or even private classes by calling or texting Risa at 405-476-9211. Also, be sure to follow Oops I Arted at Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for the latest class information.

Hopdoddy By Trevor Hultner

When new restaurants come into the metro looking to shake up the existing market, that’s only good for consumers. Hopdoddy Burger Bar, on 63rd Street and Western in Nichols Hills, is that new restaurant, and you’re going to want to check it out. Hopdoddy was founded in Texas, and has since expanded to California, Colorado, Arizona, and Tennessee. The Oklahoma City location is the company’s newest, having just opened on July 16. Their menu mixes gourmet, with experimental, with classic, no-frills options, leaving room for anyone with a hankering for a good burger to enjoy. We had the classic burger, which is exactly what it sounds like - Angus beef patty, grilled to perfection, lettuce, tomato, onion and Hopdoddy’s own “Sassy sauce.” We added some Tillamook cheddar and applewood bacon for a bit extra. This came with a fountain drink, and like many new dining establishments, Hopdoddy offers Maine Root sodas and seltzers instead of Coke or Pepsi products. If we had just stuck with the burger, that would have been perfectly sufficient - and reasonably priced! But we opted to go the entire distance with our first time at Hopdoddy, so we dived into their appetizer selection and came back up with a serious helping of chili cheese fries. These fries were not your average “hormel chili and some velveeta or melted American cheese” fries, no sir no ma’am. This was a metal mixing bowl filled almost to the top with Kennebec fries, Hopdoddy’s own chili recipe, actual queso, sour cream, green onions and sliced fresh jalapeños. It was at once sweet and spicy and savory, and probably the best chili cheese fries we’d ever had. They could absolutely serve as an entree on their own. To top things off and take some of the bite out of our fries, we also ordered a small Oreo shake. Hopdoddy advertises their shakes as “based on our vanilla custard recipe” and we kind of want to know what that is after drinking this amazing shake. Not too watery, not too thick, it was a perfectly drinkable and almost refreshing shake that we’d go back for again and again. And on top of that, all of their shakes can be made alcoholic for a few bucks extra. So the food was fantastic, and even with our adventure into the realm of the shareables, we didn’t pay more than $25 for everything (before the tip). But how was our experience in the restaurant itself? Well, needless to say, it was pretty busy. That’s to be expected for new restaurants. But Hopdoddy has a unique method of customer management that partially takes its cues from fast food. Here’s how it works. You walk into Hopdoddy. A server will greet you at the door and hand you a ticket with your party’s size and the table number you’ll sit at. Next, you will go stand in line with menu - or menus - in hand and, after a while, tell the cashier what you and your family want. Then you grab your drinks from the Maine Root fountain and go sit down. Next, depending on your proximity to the bar, a server from the bar area will drop off some drink and shake menus. When your food is ready, another server will bring it to you. When the system works, it works excellently, but in order for it to work, Hopdoddy depends on customers to actually sit in the seat they were assigned. They’re putting a lot of trust in us to keep their kitchen from devolving into anarchy, so if you decide to eat there, pay attention to that number. With an inviting atmosphere and amazing food to top it off, Hopdoddy looks to be a major contender in the Metro burger establishment market. Go check it out! 1125 NW 63rd St. a, Nichols Hills, OK 73116. hopdoddy.com for menus, pricing and online ordering.

LifeHappens Listen to your parents; but not because they say so… Chad McCoy, M.A., LPC How many times have you been told that you need to, “listen to your parents,” or even, “listen to your elders,”? Probably too many times to count, and if you have kept count, I’m sure that the number is probably pretty high. Often times this comes across very monarchial. As if your parents had the authority to make you listen to, and apply, their wise tid-bits to your own life. Some parents might argue they have that authority, and some probably do; but this approach may not be helpful in getting your true, undivided attention. I would even imagine that at times you have dismissed your parent’s “lectures” citing their age, or their ignorance to just how much society has changed. I’m not saying that you should listen to your parents because they know it all, but maybe you should listen because they just might know more than you think. This may not need to be said, but I feel compelled to preempt my following statements with this: Not all parents have the best intentions for their children, and you shouldn’t follow their advice/lectures/ “wise” tid-bits blindly. However, there is a portion of your parent’s insight into the world that you cannot substitute: Experience. Embedded knowledge is the idea that information that you have, you don’t have to experience first-hand. My father called this “Wisdom”. Wisdom allows you to take information and apply it to

your own life in a manner in which you can avoid pitfalls, maximize potential and outcomes, and save you from some pain and agony along the way. A simple example: How many of you have been told that you shouldn’t touch something because it was hot, sharp, or could hurt you? Did you? Why didn’t know? If you did, was there a sudden rush of understanding why they would say that? The problem that you might encounter, or see others encounter, is that you get old enough and convince yourself that you are smarter that your parents, and that you don’t need to listen. Look: You could very much be smarter, in some ways, than your parents. Remember this next time they need help syncing this or that to their phone or when they ask you to post something on some social site. Not everything that your parent(s) say is going to be a nugget of wisdom. You don’t listen for their benefit; you listen for yours. Their experiences and knowledge regarding their life experience is important. They may be able to help you out, but you need to listen. Listen because it’s information that your parents want to share with you, but also information that might just keep you from making a mistake. Please know, that our agency is deeply committed to furthering issues of mental health in the community.
