Hi everyone! Hoping all of you survived the change to Daylight Savings. I always enjoy this change, but this year I kind want my hour back! And, can you believe how quickly March came around?! This month marks the start of Heard on Hurd, and we are all so lucky to have Jabee come to Edmond and perform as the headlining band. Jabee has done so many great things down in OKC, and is such a fantastic performer. When you find yourself downtown, you’ll notice that Sunnyside Diner is almost ready to open at the corner of Broadway and 2nd St. Also, you’ll notice on 1st Street just west of Broadway the Railyard is coming along, too. It’s just such a fantastic time of development with some really fun ideas coming our way, that are for all of us to enjoy, not just a few. In this issue, you’ll find this season’s Heard on Hurd preview, and a feature on a new Non Profit started by Whitney Bates called Feed it Forward OKC that has begun to help Edmond’s homeless along with the homeless in OKC, a hysterical product review I did, out of necessity due to burning my hair off in January, a suggestion for an overnight getaway to Arcadian Getaways Country Cottages in Guthrie for a cozy overnight stay, and a cozy take on a Brandy Alexander from John Enterline of Edmond Wine Shop, with a reminder that sometimes its ok to avoid your therapist from Edmond Family
Counseling, located on Broadway & Danforth. I hope all of you will take the time to vote April 2, 2019, and choose who you believe will best represent the forward thinking growth Edmond has been experiencing over the past few years. Do your research and choose wisely so that our community’s momentum doesn’t stop. I support letting the City Council choose our next mayor in lieu of Mayor Lamb because I believe Edmond deserves new growth, and a group of leaders that see our future not just our past. I’ve lived in a city just west of Hollister California for a short while, and it was a very frustrating place to live, because no one wanted change. Of any sort. This type of thinking will cause our community to stagnate, and I’ve seen how that is not healthy for a community’s tax income. Certainly it would be fabulous to have such amazing amenities in our town that are new in concept, like the ones Midtown and Downtown OKC are experiencing an I am looking forward to a forward thinking Mayor and City Council to lead us there, along with our other city leaders and Edmond Chamber of Commerce! When Christmas 2018 had come and gone, Edmond resident and UCO student Whitney Bates decided they had so much food leftover that she decided to take her leftovers to feed the homeless in Downtown OKC. This wasn’t just a novel idea for Whitney to feel good about herself during the holidays, Whitney has been homeless herself and understands that the need existed. In my conversation with Whitney, she said the amount of people she fed this night was enormous and there were so many other’s she couldn’t feed, and this realization prompted her to fill out a 501 (c) 3 to create a non profit named Feed it Forward OKC. “These people are not looking for handouts, just nourishment so they can get back up and start over”, said Whitney. New deliveries began to happen in Edmond, to help our city’s homeless population the last week of February at the Farmer’s Market, and will continue as the need exists on Tuesday, Thursday
and Friday’s each week from noon to 1 pm. Whitney is attending OSUOKC Mondays and Wednesdays, while working on the new nonprofit, to acquire her non-profit certification and an associates degree in business management. W h i t n e y decided to contact the Edmond Police Department for help in finding the best place to help those who are homeless in Edmond and she connected with Edmond PD Sgt. Chad Brown, and he took her to see the spots most populated by the homeless in Edmond as he is in charge of the task of keeping track of these residents and knowing who they are, and his input was integral to Whitney’s mission in Edmond, and so that Whitney could come up with a location best suited to provide meals. Whitney said there are only 10 homeless currently in Edmond, whereas in OKC there are thousands. “We have only been doing this for about a little over a month and half, and have already provided over 1,400 meals. Thanks to KFOR, we received a donation of $10,000 and we are seeing rapid growth.”
Whitney will concentrate her efforts on the three homeless tent communities in OKC, and will provide the meals to those in need in Edmond at the Farmer’s Market for now, due to their high mobility rates. Right now, they have three full time volunteers, but as the need arises, will put a call out for more in the future. ProductReview Revlon Salon One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer By Sherri Hultner I was online in January, and UCO’s Coach Pickett’s wife, Kristen, posted one of the most gripping testimonials to a product I’ve seen in awhile. I am, and have always been, a tomboy. Therefore, beauty products come and go, and I rarely notice. When my hair is long, it goes up into a bun or ponytail. What is the point, some may be asking themselves. Well, I may just agree with that. After reading Kristen’s review, I decided it was time to try this product, mainly because of how quickly she said she was able to blow out her medium long hair – and, not have to use a flat iron. In September, I was a week away from a hair cut, and it was terrible humidity. It seemed like it was taking forever to blow dry the back of my hair because of how thick it had gotten, with the then normal drying time upwards of 45 minutes. So I kept going, and then there was smoke. I brushed out the back only to find that I had burned a long piece right off. Luckily, my hair is so long and so thick, it wasn’t visible. Except to me, and my hairstylist. Yikes. On the advice of my hairstylist, I bought a new hair dryer, but it was still taking at the least 25 minutes, and I did not want to cut my hair short again. I have to say, I was reluctant at first, after having tested the face cream scam that was going around in August of last year. Scott Hinds at KFOR simultaneously did a scam story on several cream scams, just about the time my cream had been delivered, and I scrapped that review in early
September because I decided he is much better at delivering a consumer warning and to be honest, I felt duped over $4.99, and the fact the cream burned my face and neck at first. Like Scott Hinds says, never put something on your face if you don’t know what the ingredients are, HA! To be honest, it’s not cool when you order something, it burns your skin for a second, and it turns out to be a subscription scam. According to Scott’s story, some were charged upwards of $84.99 repeatedly. So. You can see my apprehension. I ordered this item at Amazon.com, as Kristen stated she had found hers at Target, but they were sold out online and in store. The price was high for my pay grade at $54.95, however it is comparable to the Dyson, which starts at $499, so, not really pricey in the grand scheme of things. I washed my hair, and let it dry a bit and tried this product out. It’s large, and I thought it would be difficult to manage, but alas, not difficult at all. And stunningly, my wavy to curly hair was blown out perfectly straight in….. 8 minutes. With not one wave or curl left. No flatiron. I would highly suggest this product to every single busy woman in and around Edmond. After a few try’s it is a snap to use, and you get the same result as the Dyson, however no attachments like the Dyson, so, that may be your determining factor. Excitedly I no longer have to worry about burning large pieces off my mane due to excessive blow drying times, and if you are looking for a way to cut your morning routine in half, this tool is for you.

Citizens Bank of Edmond Returns Heard on Hurd for the 6th Season Edmond Community Bank Celebrates Local Music, Local Shopping, Local Food Edmond, Okla. (March 7, 2018) – Citizens Bank of Edmond’s Heard on Hurd returns for the 2019 season on Saturday, March 16, at the corner of Broadway and Hurd in downtown Edmond. The theme of the event is “Go Green” in celebration of the St. Patrick’s Day holiday. Festival attendees will enjoy live, local music and a variety of food trucks and pop-up shops from 6-10 p.m. Heard on Hurd is held every third Saturday of the month from March through October. “We can’t believe that our small-town festival launched in 2014 with only 10 food trucks is now in its 6th season and bringing over 25,000 attendees to downtown Edmond each event!” said Jill Castilla, Citizens Bank of Edmond president and CEO. “We are so excited we were able to continue Heard on Hurd in 2019 and grateful to serve our role in highlighting the local community.” The season opening event will bring a diverse range of local talent to the main stage organized by Tower Theatre : • Zunis at 6:00PM, an emerging Indie Alternative band formed through the high school jazz program at Tulsa School of Arts & Sciences looking to take their sophomore release “EARTH TO SELF EP,” on a national scale; • BC & The Big Rigs at 7:20PM, an Americana/ Rock & Roll band that brings a wall of sound with powerful groovy riffs, screaming lead guitar, and a slamming rhythm section; • Jabee at 8:40 PM, an East Oklahoma City native Hip Hop artist whose rhymes have been 14 edmondactive.com

The March event will feature over 30 food truck vendors including Heard on Hurd legacies, local favorites, and brand-new food trucks like Big O’s Pork and Dreams, Klemm’s Smoke Haus, Smoke N Oak Pizza, Nick’s Tamales, Cookie Dough to Go, The Brown’s Kitchen, Wicked Hangry, Mighty Corndog, Boardwalk Burritos, Backroads BBQ, Metro Mini’s, C’est Si Bon, and many others. Shopping has never been better with local pop-ups and mobile boutiques spread throughout the event such as 405 Mobile Boutique, Cargo Room, Mode, Izzy Anne Society, J Noelle Boutique, and more! Locally brewed craft beer from The Patriarch tents will be available for purchase as well as from the unique remodeled Beer Bus, The Big Friendly . LifeHappens Dodging Your Therapist? That’s okay. It’s a beautiful day! You’re at a local event, maybe Heard on Hurd or the Farmer’s Market. You’re enjoying the sunshine and breeze; Oklahoma’s best! But hark, who goes there? It’s your therapist over yonder. You freeze with a whoosh of jumbled thoughts going through your head: my therapist has a life outside of my one hour a week? This feels so unnatural! Should I say hi? And you likely adhere to 5 D’s of dodgeball as Patches O-Houlihan so eloquently puts it in the 2004 hit movie Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, dodge, duck, dip, dive, and…dodge! You are not alone with those bruises from your acrobatic escape as many people flee at the sight of their counselor in a public setting. This is a perfectly valid response to this experience. However, it is not the only response. Like seeing a teacher outside of school or a dog walking on its hind legs, seeing your counselor in public almost automatically evokes a certain level of anxiety. For some, your stress level might sky rocket into deep space while others may only feel a mild discomfort due to the foreign experience. Still others may feel no anxiety at all, rather excitement at seeing a friend type figure. Again, any response is valid regardless of how you feel about your counselor in the 50-60 minutes you see him/her at his/her office.Even if you have a fantastic jive with each other therapeutically, it can still be awkward. Because we know it can be awkward, I’ll tell you what we, as counselors, will typically do in that situation and why. Remember that spiel you got at the beginning of all this? The one about
confidentiality? Well that comes into play here. You could be walking with your mom, friend from water polo, or Uncle Bob. We don’t know who you’re with or if they’re aware of your counseling experience. So if I were to boisterously give you a big hello I might be, as it were, “outing” you to whomever is around when an awkwardly long silence during introductions rolls around. Even if you aren’t with anyone, other people are bustling by on the street/grocery aisle/gas pump/etc. While we don’t tout ourselves as famous, many communities are small and people may know our line of work and subsequently deduce our relationship status. This brings me to how we will typically respond: a pleasant and courteous smile with limited eye contact the same as we’d extent to a perfect stranger in passing. That is unless you choose to say hi to us - in which case we’d love to say hi back. All this to maintain your counseling anonymity unless you so choose otherwise.Well there you have it. The ball is in your court! While we won’t conduct a full therapy session at Sprouts (save the gory details for our next session), we’d love to say hi. Or not.
