Hi everyone! Hoping all of you are well, and are ready to get out your vote in November. This midterm election matters, regardless of your party. I, for one, am looking forward to the day the voters of our State realize that no matter their party, it is good for the financial and social health of the State, as a whole, to vote for candidates that get together and work out issues, rather than the vitriol we saw in the Capitol this spring. I hope you’ll take the time to visit Edmondactive.com to read Trevor Hultner’s series and guide to all of the candidates. This month there are so many events happening around the metro, and if you have little ones, the Myriad Gardens Pumpkinville event is one not to miss! Also, Heard on Hurd is back for its season finale October 20 in Downtown Edmond and it is also so festive, as Citizen’s Bank of Edmond turns on their lights to start the Holiday season off right. In this issue, we highlight the September Heard on Hurd event, which was wellattended and ushered out summer in such a fun way. In Local Edmond, Brian Attebery, owner of Results Fitness, is featured in a multi part series on how to find a reputable partner for weight loss and fitness, as so many of you asked me how I was able to lose 130 lbs over 15 months. In My Home, TLC Garden Centers supplied the fun with a pumpkin planter project, and, in Shop Edmond, Paper Arts
features some of the new product just in for the holiday crafting season. Local Flavor features one of my all time favorite cookie recipes from Martha Hall, innkeeper at Arcadian Getaways, and in Life Happens, John Goetz of Edmond Family Counseling talks specifically about privilege, and it is a great piece to make us all take a moment and think. Also, 2 Doors Down is hosting their Holiday Open House November 1, and you’ll have two opportunities that day to visit and enjoy refreshments and preview their holiday inventory. Keep your eye out for more Holiday Open House information from EmoryAnne Interiors, Serendipity Market and Paper Arts at our Instagram feed @Edmondactive! I am just getting the November issue started and am excited about it, and am hoping all of you enjoy this Fall Break with your family and friends! Thanks so much for reading and don’t forget to follow at our social feeds at Instagram, Facebook and Twitter @ Edmondactive. See you around Edmond! Sherri

Heard on Hurd Rocks September! Citizen’s Bank of Edmond’s Heard on Hurd Ushers Out Summer on a High Note! Saturday September 15, 2018, Citizens Bank of Edmond rocked the downtown streets of Edmond during the September Heard on Hurd event. The theme “September for the Sparks” was centered around honoring the recent loss of Chad Sparks from Sparxx Sliders, who was a part of the food truck family in the Oklahoma City Metro area. David Greggs, owner of The Flying Pig BBQ food truck, had a lot to say about the September Event. “Similar to how Citizens works to build community, we strive to support a sense of community among OKC’s food trucks. When we learned of Chad’s sudden passing, dozens of trucks jumped to figure out what we could do to support his wife and family. One idea we were especially excited about was a special theme for the September Heard on Hurd where all the trucks put out donation jars to collect money for his family. Our truck also chose to feature a special slider, honoring Chad’s specialty, with a portion of proceeds again going back to his family. We hope to continue to find ways to support Chad’s family as they go through this difficult time and thank Citizens and Heard on Hurd for joining 08 edmondactive.com
EdmondEvents with us in this effort!” Festival goers heard a wide array of musical genres as Don’t Tell Dena, Young Weather, and Cavern Company took the stage. The featured nonprofit, Turning Point Ministries, interacted with the crowd by the stage and promoted their upcoming fundraising event, the Turkey Trot, which is hosted on Thanksgiving Day. More information can be found at Turning Point Ministries. “This month, we celebrated Heard on Hurd’s 4th anniversary. We started this celebration of all things local four years ago, and we are blown away by how much it has grown with the support and dedication from our staff, all the vendors, the community and the City of Edmond.” Said Jill Castilla, President and CEO of Citizens Bank of Edmond.

EdmondEvents “We thank everyone who has been a part of Heard on Hurd throughout these past few years, and we hope to continue our local festival for many more years to come.” The organization USA Dance made a surprise appearance at the event and performed various “Flash Mobs” throughout the evening. The Edmond Fire Department entertained kids and parents alike with their Kid’s Safety Village activities. The Teacup Chain Square Dancers also performed during the event. OKC Thunder fans were pleased with the attendance of the OGE ThunderBolt trailer where they were able to take pictures with a Steven Adam’s cutout, measure their shoe size next to Russell Westbrook’s, and compare hand sizes with other favorite players. The last event of the season will be October 20th from 6pm – 10pm. As a reminder to local businesses and non-profit organizations interested in participating in the event, an application must be completed which can be found online at www.CitizensEdmond.com/ forvendors. The application deadline to participate in the October event is September 30th. To find out more about the event, like us on Facebook, and follow us on Twitter and Instagram

Get Fit OK
My Story And My Conversation With Brian Attebery, Owner Of Results Fitness By Sherri Hultner
In mid 2017, it had become clear to me that my sedentary lifestyle, of sitting while doing computer work, had taken its toll on me physically, to the extent of being concerned for my physical well-being, and after being publicly humiliated by a 30 something young professional. In 3 years, I had gained 150 lbs., and could not feel my feet or hands. I do not own any full-length mirrors and the only mirror I had only went to my waistline. I literally didn’t see what had occurred, and surely was in denial as to what I did see. On June 13, 2017, in a professional setting, I had a young man (who sadly was born and raised in Edmond) look me up and down in disgust, and then laughed at me while looking me straight in the eye. It was the most embarrassed I had ever been this particular day, as I knew my clothes did not fit well, and the humiliation left a permanent mark on my life.
We all tell each other size doesn’t matter, and to me it never has, however, this one person changed that perspective for me, and proved very clearly that that mantra is simply not really true, in real life. I went home, took a full-length selfie, and went silent at what my then current physical condition had become. I wore a size 30, when 3 years prior I wore a size 12. As of today, I’ve lost 126 lbs. In 2017, on this particular day in June, I dropped down and began a journey set in my mind to lose 150 lbs using the tools from my previous trainer, and a mat, an exercise ball, two 10 lb hand weights and my porch as a box step. In 2007, my husband and I employed the services of an amazing, college educated, certified trainer, and between us, that year we lost 125 lbs. We had retrained ourselves in our thinking, eating habits and made basic physical activity/workouts a normal part of our lives. Then, the economy disintegrated.
I kept this goal to myself, and didn’t share my goal with anyone and made myself accountable to myself. I changed my diet (removing all processed food, soda, salt, sugar for an entire year and only ate fresh foods). This change for me, included discontinuing eating what my family chose to eat, which had to be done, as they were not on the same page I found myself on, at the moment. Mr. Attebery of Results Fitness stated this is common and most often it leads to healthy competitiveness with married couples. At first, my journey did not start this way, but after the last year, and my results and progress, my family is finally starting to set their own goals for healthy living, to my relief. I didn’t share this journey with social media nor my family and I didn’t complain to anyone at all at how hard it was or how much it hurt to get to my goal of at least a 100 lb weight change. This goal was only for me, and, it was for me to accomplish on my own or fail
14 edmondactive.com
LocalEdmond at on my own, because in fact, the failure rate was pretty high for this particular goal, and in doing it solo – and I knew it. Jump to March of 2018. I first shared with the public that I had in fact lost 60 lbs. I was astounded by the engagement and responses asking me what I had done, and how they could start. I must say it is encouraging as to how many of you are interested in changing your personal situations. My goal now is to lose another 35 to 40 lbs, to feel healthy and to feel comfortable with my outward appearance. After running cross-country throughout my youth, I would like to complete a 5k soon. Baby steps. Start Your Weight Loss Journey with a Licensed Certified Professional As I did not, and do not, feel it is right for me to give advice as to what worked for me, in my now 126 lb weight loss journey, I had a phenomenal conversation with Brian Attebery, a nationally certified trainer and owner of
Results Fitness here in Edmond, about how to find a trainer who is properly educated, certified and trained to give advice as to how to change ones mindset, eating habits, correct training process, and gain accountability in their weight loss goals without constant supervision of a trainer. Mr. Attebery’s attitude in requiring his clients to be partially responsible for their training on their own, is one of my favorite things about our conversation, because at one point you must own the journey. Mr. Attebery stated that the public must be careful as to who they chose to train them as many trainers can become certified online with little to no education in nutrition, proper training techniques, and more. Most people will join a gym and get there only to realize they have no idea where to start. At Results, every trainer is college educated, and certified and licensed to help you reach your weight and fitness
goals. While Mr. Attebery is known for training pageant participants, they also train every day people too. Results Fitness has very affordable rates for individuals, couples and whole families. They are also our neighbors, so the accountability for customer service is high, as are Mr. Attebery’s standards of service. Services you can expect are training, nutritional guidance, and maintenance training. You can be assured that every trainer at this locally owned facility knows their stuff and will guide you properly through the process, leaving you with the ability to maintain a healthy lifestyle in the end, on your own, with full confidence in your own abilities. LifeHappens My Privilege By John Goetz Webster’s dictionary says a privilege is a right or immunity granted as a particular benefit, advantage, or favor. It is time that I address two of my privileges in life. First is I married a great cook. Yes due to no skills of my own I married an individual with generations of food knowledge. Why is this a privilege? Well over the past 48 hours I have listened to, read, and researched numerous references to the topic that food is medicine. To be more specific current research is describing how what we eat transforms into molecules that make us who we are, how we think and feel, as surely as any product manufactured by the words pharmaceutical corporations. We have MRI and PET scans that show an increase in desired brain activity in areas associated with Alzheimer and ADHD after only 10 days of consuming a diet high in vegetables and healthy fat. Simply Increasing plain old dietary fiber increases telomere length. Telomeres are the specialized stretches of DNA at the end of chromosomes. The way they’re always described is that they’re like the aglets, or plastic tips, at the end of shoelaces. And just as the plastic tips keep shoelaces from fraying, telomeres keep the ends of chromosomes from fraying or sticking. The trouble is, each time a cell divides, the telomeres get shorter. When they’re too short, the cell can no longer divide and the cell goes dormant or dies. This shortening process is associated with aging, cancer, and a higher risk of death in general. As Dr. Michael Pollan says, “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” You know real food, things your great grandmother of someone
else great grandmother would recognize as food. My second privilege is I grew up in a large working/middle class family in a small home. I quickly learned to go outside just to find space and this lead to discovering physical activity and working with my hands. When I got married my wife, yes the same one with the generations of food knowledge, took me to International Fitness and signed us up for a gym membership. As it turns out one of the most powerful things that you can do for positive mental health is exercise. Why walking 40 minutes a day is arguably more effective in treating depression than medication. Participation in knitting and other crafts is found to positively impact mood, to reduce stress, to head off cognitive decline, to improve eating disorders, and help with chronic pain. Physical activity is critical to our mental health as well as our physical health. As a therapist I have been taught to help people focus on those things in which they have power to make change, primarily ourselves. We chose what we put in our mouths and what we do with our bodies, to our benefit or detriment. No yes buts, a gym is as close as the outside and healthy food choices can be as economical as fast food. Knowledge about nutrition, exercise, and crafts is all around you. All you have to do is take action. Please know, that our agency is deeply committed to furthering issues of mental health in the community.
