PRESENTATION INTRODUCTION

L’existence du Grau-du-Roi remonte à l’époque des croisades. Son port est relié à la commune d’AiguesMortes grâce à un chenal de 6 kilomètres permettant aux navires de circuler. Modeste village de pêcheurs, le Grau-du-Roi devint peu à peu une station touristique grâce au prolongement de la voie ferrée reliant Nîmes à Aigues-Mortes. En 1969, l’architecte Jean Balladur, à qui nous devons la station balnéaire de la Grande-Motte, lance la construction de bassins, de quais et de jetées qui donneront naissance à PortCamargue, quartier de la commune du Grau-du-Roi. Port Camargue est aujourd’hui l’un des tous premiers ports de plaisance d’Europe. Le Grau-du-Roi marque la frontière entre l’Hérault et la Camargue, connue pour ses étendues d’eaux salines et ses paysages sauvages. The “Grau-du-Roi’s” existence goes back to the Crusades. Its port is connected to “Aigues-Mortes” city by a 6 kilometers-long-channel enabling the ships to circulate. Modest fishermen village, the “Grau-du-Roi” became step by step a touristic resort thanks to the rcontinuation of the railway connecting “Nîmes” to “AiguesMortes”. In 1969, the architect Jean Balladur launches the construction of basins, quays and seawalls who will give birth to the “Grau-du-Roi” district: “Port-Camargue” which is today one of the finest European marinas. “Grau-du-Roi” city is the frontier between “Herault” and the “Camargue”, well known for his wild landscapes and very large stretches of salt marshes.

environnement locaTION Le Boucanet est une longue plage située dans la baie d’Aigues-Mortes. Elle est délimitée par des digues qui la protègent. C’est une plage sécurisante, très appréciée des touristes l’été. The “Boucanet” spot is a long beach located on Aigues-Mortes’ bay. It is defined by the seawalls. It’s a very pleasant reassuring spot.
CONDITIONS DE NAVIGATION SAILING CONDITIONS La Tramontane souffle Side-on et crée de belles vagues qui déroulent au bout des digues. Par Sud-Est le plan d’eau est perturbé et le vent irrégulier. Les vents à éviter sont surtout : le Mistral (très perturbé et offshore), et la brise marine de Sud-Ouest qui vous empêchera de vous éloigner de la plage. The Tramontana (Sideon), creates some nice waves which start at the end of the seawalls. By South-East wind, the water is disrupted and the wind too gusty. Winds to avoid are : the Mistral (very disrupted and offshore) and the South-West wind which pushes you onto the beach.

environnement locaTION Plage Nord est un “Urban” spot, caché au milieu des habitations touristiques de Port-Camargue. C’est une petite plage donnant un accès à la baie du Grau-du-Roi. Spot adapté pour le windsurf. North Beach is an “Urban” spot, hidden among the touristic area of Port-Camargue. It’s a small beach giving access to the Graudu-Roi bay. Good spot for windsurf.
CONDITIONS DE NAVIGATION SAILING CONDITIONS La baie du Grau-du-Roi a la particularité de former un “lagon” fermé par un banc de sable à 200 ou 300 mètres du bord. Les conditions sont excellentes par Tramontane : clapot serré, vent régulier, les vagues cassent sur le banc de sable et le plan d’eau reste plat. Par Mistral, vent très irrégulier, allez sur le spot de Plage Sud. Les vagues rentrent tout de même dans la baie, particulièrement par vent d’Ouest. Tous les autres vents sont à éviter. The Bay of Grau-du-Roi is a “lagoon” closed by a sandbar at 200 or 300 meters from the beach. The conditions are excellent by Tramontana : regular wind, waves breaking on the sandbar, the water remains flat. By Mistral, irregular wind, go to “Plage Sud”. The waves still roll into the bay, particularly by West wind. Avoid to practice with all the other winds.

environnement locaTION La plage sud de Port-Camargue est une jolie plage dont les accès ont été dernièrement réaménagés avec parking, espaces verts et protection de la dune. Deux digues protègent le spot de Plage Sud, créant ainsi une zone permettant d’avoir pied. South beach at “Port-Camargue” is a nice equipped beach with car parks, toilets, green spaces and dune protections. The seawalls protect the spot and create a shallow water zone.
CONDITIONS DE NAVIGATION SAILING CONDITIONS Plage Sud est certainement l’un des rares spots de la région permettant de naviguer par Mistral et Tramontane (Side-shore), sans prendre le risque de dériver. Inversement, les orientations Sud, Sud-Est, Est et Nord-Est sont à proscrire, le vent étant alors Off-shore et trop irrégulier. “South beach” is certainly one of the only spots where you can ride by Tramontana and Mistral (Side-shore). Inversely, the South, South-East, East and North-East winds are to be proscribed (Off-shore).

environnement locaTION La plage de l’Espiguette, marque la fin du Languedoc-Roussillon et l’ouverture sur la Camargue. C’est un espace préservé et protégé de toute urbanisation. Le phare de l’Espiguette est l’un des phares les plus bas au monde, il domine la plage qui s’étend sur plus de 10 kilomètres. The “Espiguette” beach marks the boundary of the region “Languedoc-Roussillon” and the entrance in Camargue. The spot and its surroundings are a preserved area (no urbanisation). Only the lighthouse of l’Espiguette, one of the lower of the world, dominates the beach which speads over 10 km.
CONDITIONS DE NAVIGATION SAILING CONDITIONS Windsurfers : l’accès au spot depuis le parking est assez long (15 min à pied). Les conditions sont optimales par Tramontane, le vent étant Side ou Side-on. Par Mistral, préférez le spot de Plage Sud. Une zone de kitesurf est installée l’été. Par Sud-Est (vent irrégulier), rejoignez le parking payant au bout de la route . Windsurfers : you need to walk to the spot (15 min). The conditions are optimum with Tramontana (Side or Side-on wind). By Mistral, choose to ride on “Plage Sud”. There is a kitesurf-zone during the summer. By SouthEast (irregular wind), join the car park on the left (not free) at the end of the road.

Un courant marin d’orientation Est, Sud-Est, longe la plage et façonne les bancs de sable. La profondeur d’eau varie rapidement. L’été, attention aux baigneurs et aux promeneurs. Be careful with the stream coming from the East following the beach, the depth water vary a lot according to the banks of sand formed. In summer, be careful of the swimmers and the walkers.

A la sortie du Grau-du-Roi, prendre la direction de l’Espiguette. Il existe 2 parkings sur l’Espiguette : - Celui de gauche (payant d’avril à fin novembre. H<2 mètres), à l’avantage d’être plus proche de l’eau. Il faut continuer toujours tout droit, jusqu’au bout de la route. - Celui de droite est gratuit (H<2 mètres) mais vous devrez marcher 15 min pour rejoindre la plage. Au 2ème rondpoint, prendre à droite direction “camping de l’Espiguette” puis prendre le chemin à gauche juste avant l’entrée du camping. At the “Grau-du-Roi” exit, take the direction of “Espiguette” beach. There are 2 car parks on “Espiguette” beach: -The “left spot” (not free from April to November H<2m) is the closest from the water. It is located at the left side of the beach. Follow the direction “L’Espiguette”. The car park is located at the end of the road. -The “right spot” with a free car park (H<2 meters) is at the right side of the beach. You have to walk to reach the beach (15 min). At the 2nd roundabout, follow the direction “camping de l’Espiguette”. Just before the campsite’s entrance, take the lane on the left.

histoire history A l’origine, le Stand up paddle est une forme ancestrale du Surf originaire de Polynésie. Les habitants des îles taillaient des planches dans des troncs d’arbres et les utilisaient pour pêcher dans les lagons ou se déplacer d’îles en îles. Les Hawaïens de leur coté, utilisaient aussi leurs planches mais la taille des vagues les obligeant à rester assis, ils développèrent le Paddle Board qui devint par la suite la planche fétiche de tous les Lifeguards du monde entier. Dans les années 40, à Hawaï, les surfeurs locaux, communément appelés les “Beach Boys”, restaient debout sur leur planches de surf, utilisant une pagaie pour aller photographier les touristes apprenant à surfer. Laird Hamilton et Dave Kalama, célèbres Watermen, furent dans les premiers à utiliser le Stand up paddle pour s’entrainer et se déplacer les jours sans vent. Le Stand up paddle, comme son nom l’indique, consiste à se déplacer sur l’eau, debout sur une planche de surf en ramant avec une pagaie. Libre à chacun de trouver son équilibre. Du surf à Hawaï ou sur les côtes landaises, de la traversée de l’océan à la randonnée sur lacs et rivières, le SUP n’a pas de limite, à part peut-être celle de l’homme… C’est Laird Hamilton qui en 2005, lors d’un voyage en France, emmena dans ses bagages une planche de surf plus grande et plus large que les autres ainsi qu’une pagaie. Après de multiples démonstrations et une traversée de la Manche, le Stand up paddle débarquait sur nos côtes. Depuis ce jour, l’engouement pour le SUP ne cesse de grandir. Pratiqué au début par les surfeurs confirmés, il séduit aujourd’hui de plus en plus de néophytes en quête de sensations nouvelles. The Stand up paddle take its roots in a ancestral form of surf in Polynesia. The islands inhabitants shaped board from trees trunks and use them for fishing in the lagoons or to go from one island to another. While, Hawaï inhabitants also used the boards but the size of the waves prevented them from standing up, keeping them in sit position, they developped the Paddle Board which became afterwards the fetish board of the lifeguards all around the globe. In the forties, in Hawaï, local surfers, usually called the “Beach Boys”, standed up on their surf board, using a paddle to go taking pictures of the tourists learning how to surf. Laird Hamilton and Dave Kalama, famous Watermen, were in the first ones to train and move with Stand up paddle on days without wind. Stand up paddle, how indicates its name, consists in displacing oneself on the water, standing up on a surf board rowing with a paddle. Ererybody is free to find its own style. From surfing in Hawaï or in the Landes coasts, from the ocean crossing to the lakes and rivers riding, Stands has no limit, even maybe those of human-being. In 2005, it’s Laird Hamilton who, during a trip in France, took with its luggages la surf board longer and wider than the others, along with a paddle. After several demos and a “Channel” crossing, Stand up paddle definitely landed on our coastlines. Since that day, the passion for Stands does not stop growing. At the beginning, mostly practiced by surf experts, it seduces today more and more amateurs seeking for new feelings.

Le matériel - About the gear
La gamme de planches de SUP proposée est très étendue. Elle va de la planche “débutante” dont le pont est recouvert de mousse EVA pour éviter de se blesser en chutant, aux planches de course racing, plus longues et plus fines qui vous permettront de traverser la Méditerranée! Il existe aussi des modèles taillés pour les vagues et d’autres que l’on peut équiper d’un gréement de windsurf. Certains fabricants proposent plus de 20 modèles différents. Impossible de ne pas trouver son bonheur ! The range of SUP boards is very wide. It goes from the board for “beginners” whose deck is covered with EVA foam to avoid being hurt when falling, to the racing boards, longer and thinner to allow you crossing the Mediterranean Sea! There are also models tailored for waves and others that can be fitted with a windsurfing rig. Some manufacturers offer over 20 different models. Impossible not to find what you are looking for!

Certains spots réputés pour leurs vagues par Sud-Est vous permettront de surfer. De nombreux clubs (ex : Wesh Crew Center à Leucate et le Windsurf Park au Ponant) proposent également des initiations ou de la location de SUP, alors, n’hésitez pas. Cet été, goûtez aux joies de la glisse dans sa plus simple expression. actualite du sup sUP NEWS Championnat de France Stand Up Paddle Race 2011 Après le succès du Championnat de France SUP Race 2010 à Biarritz en Octobre dernier, l’édition 2011 aura lieu à Bandol dans le Var le 4 et 5 juin 2011. Elle sera organisée par le Comité Régional PACA de Surf et l’Extrême Bandol Club à l’occasion de la 3ème édition du Summer SUP Challenge. After the success of the 2010 French Championship of Stands Race in Biarritz last October, the 2011 edition will be held in Bandol (Var) on the 4th and 5th of June 2011.
