“We live in a fear-driven, anxietyridden society that tries to say what we should look like and act like and be like,” Jessica says. “Yoga helps me on my path to understanding that there’s something more than just waking up every day and going through the grind.” www.karmayogaindy.com A C T IV E LIF E G UIDE .COM

J

essica Gershman has determination written all over her—literally. On the underside of her left forearm she has a tattoo. “It’s Sanskrit for ‘determined one,’” she explains. The Sanskrit word is avasita, and she earned that moniker from her 200-hour and 500-hour yoga studies at Shamrock Wellness in Carmel, IN. In fact, Jessica’s never been one to shy away from her pioneering spirit. At the age of 19, she jumped headfirst into the high-stress world of commercial real estate, working for her father’s business. When the recession hit and the real estate market crashed in 2008, she took the opportunity to earn a culinary certificate at the Art Institute of Indianapolis—even having her award-winning recipe for Brussels sprouts with duck confit published. In 2014, after years of taking yoga classes, teaching, and delving deep into the historical and spiritual practice, Jessica founded her own yoga studio, Karma Yoga, and teaches privately out of her home. And just recently, inspired by her own and her students’ experiences on the yoga mat, she’s embarked on a journey in fashion design with plans to release an 8-piece

16

ACTIVE

collection in the fall of 2016. Oh no, Jessica doesn’t do anything half-heartedly. “I was born with a take-the-bull-by-the-horns attitude,” she says. AN UNLIKELY YOGI

Jessica has an extensive background in health and exercise. “I taught fitness back in college,” she tells me. “I did spinning, wrestling, boxing, kickboxing—I’ve always been a hard-core fitness person.” And kickboxing and wrestling somehow make sense as an outlet for a young woman working in commercial real estate. But yoga? Jessica describes the first yoga classes she took as torture. “I was a super-intense personality—I couldn’t slow it down for yoga,” she says. “I just knew it wasn’t for me.” Yet something inside her kept Jessica going back for more. It was at the Yoga Studio in Broad Ripple that she finally found her yoga groove. “It was a perfect environment for me,” she says. “It was hot, fast-paced, they played gangster rap, and I just got into that—I got lost in the music.” With each session, she felt a growing sense of accomplishment, and of inner

LI FE MAGAZINE | J A N UA RY 2 0 1 6

peace. Soon she was there every day. And soon she realized that yoga was transforming her into a calmer, softer person. “There’s a girl who comes to my class who I used to work with at my dad’s office,” Jessica tells me. “I hadn’t seen her in eight years, and she came up to me recently and said it was amazing for her to see me before and after yoga. It has changed me.” Through her initial teacher training at the Yoga Studio, Jessica found herself desiring to know more about the history and spiritual practice of yoga. “It became less about the physical for me, and more about wanting to understand the deeper meaning of the practice,” she says. She earned her RYT 200 certification from Shamrock Wellness in 2014 and continued onto the 500-hour track. Last fall, Jessica had the opportunity to train with the famed Sri Dharma Mittra at New York’s Dharma Yoga Center. “It doesn’t have to be hot vinyasa with loud music anymore,” she says. “You get past those physical layers and really dig deep into those more spiritual elements. Yoga really has been my pathway to God, a connection to something greater than myself.” CULINARY BONDING When she’s not working up a hot vinyasa sweat in her 95-degree studio, one of Jessica’s favorite things is to cook dinner with her children. In the process, she nourishes her children in both body and mind. “The girls love to cook with me, so that’s a good time we can talk,” she says. As a trained chef and a firm believer in cooking with pure ingredients, Jessica makes dinner a family event every night. (And every morning, for that matter. Jessica has an almost daily AM “conference call” with her dad, and the two exchange suggestions to help each other figure out what to cook that night.) “I’m not a fat-free cook—I use butter and heavy cream—but I balance it all with plenty of vegetables,” she says. “For me, it’s about using the best ingredients. We’ll still

eat mac and cheese, but it’s grass-fed organic.” She feels a certain pride in having a 3-yearold who eats Brussels sprouts and eggplant, and in dining out with her family and having her 7-year-old order scallops. She’s also empowered that same little girl to be their home’s designated Caesar-dressing maker. There’s a bonding game they like to play at the table, too. “We’ll play Peak and Pits—what was the best part of your day, and what was not-so-good,” Jessica says. “It forces the kids to give you more information than, ‘How was school’?” Jessica credits yoga with giving her a deeper understanding of herself and her place in this world, and her practice has led her to cultivate a culture of connectedness with those around her, including her husband, two daughters of her own and two stepsons. “As a society, we seem to have lost that personal connection,” she says. “Yoga has helped me to be present when I do things with my kids, or when I’m out on a date with my husband.” A BRAND NEW PAIR OF PANTS Yoga has also inspired a new creative outlet for Jessica. Up until this past summer, she had always considered the confines of the kitchen to be the extent of her creativity, having always enjoyed experimenting with different foods and recipes. After spending countless hours sweating through yoga clothes, though, Jessica recognized something was missing from the line of options for women’s athletic attire. “As a yoga teacher, you have a thousand pairs of pants, teaching in a hot studio, rotating them out,” she says. “As women, after we work out, we don’t want to put on denim—we want to put on another set of yoga clothes or fitness apparel to run around our day in. What I’m designing is a transitional line that bridges your move from athletic wear to denim.” Jessica’s goal in finding “the perfect pant” was to create something comfortable and supportive, but also high

AC TI V E L I FE GU I DE . CO M

fashion. And so she checked out high-end lines such as Balmain, Valentino and Yves Saint Laurent. “I wanted to understand what makes their items stand out—the emotions they evoke, and their attention to detail,” Jessica tells me. Her own line reflects her modern, minimalist style, and she’s on track to release an eight-piece collection of four pants and four tops in the fall of 2016 that will be the culmination of more than a year’s worth of research and design work. “I’ve basically taken all the yoga pants I love and looked at what I like and what I don’t like,” Jessica goes on to explain. “I’ve brought up the waist and added some compression. I’m developing a butt-lift in the back, so I’m working to create a fabric that’s just right for that.” As with anything Jessica believes in, she’s bringing the heart of that avasita, that “determined one,” to her latest passion.

WALKING THE PATH Life has carried Jessica Gershman along a number of diverse paths—and her determined soul will undoubtedly encounter more opportunities for growth in the years ahead. But she believes her greatest accomplishment so far is the person that the practice of yoga has helped her to become. “So much of the time, we create unrealistic expectations for ourselves,” Jessica says. “It’s all about finding balance in all things so that you can be okay with whatever your best is in a particular day. And knowing that your best changes from day to day—and being okay with that, too.” While she admits that balance is still something she’s working towards, Jessica couldn’t be happier with the person she’s becoming. “Yoga has allowed me to foster some beautiful relationships,” she says. “I was a really high-stress, high-intensity person, and my ability to soften through my practice has allowed me to be a better mother, friend and wife.”

FORGET YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION!

4 Life Hacks to a “New You”

1. FOCUS ON THE PROCESS AND NOT THE OUTCOME. Say you want to make more money or improve your finances this year. Don’t place a dollar amount on it. Focus on the process and the things that financially sound individuals do. This may mean forming a budget, tracking spending, educating yourself or working towards a promotion. Then emphasize not quitting and committing yourself one day at a time. 2. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF. “I’m not an athlete.” “I have a hard time losing weight.” “I don’t interview well.” “I can’t dance.” “I am not a runner.” “I can’t cook.” Placing yourself in these boxes limits your growth as an individual and sets yourself up for failure. Believe in yourself and go back to life hack 1: Train like a runner and athlete, practice interviewing or take cooking or dance lessons. The start to better health, or a better life, or a better future is simply our belief that it is possible.

H

ave you made your New Year’s resolution list for 2016 yet? Does it look eerily similar to your 2015 list? For most of us it seems that every year it’s the same list: lose weight, drink less, stop smoking, volunteer more, get more sleep, save money sign up today! 317.572.2999 or learn something new. We repeat these lists from year to year with little or no change, and this eventually leads to mid–February disappointment. So throw out those resolutions this year and focus on these four life hacks to a “New You.”

3. ACCEPT THAT LIFE CONSISTS OF FAILURE. Don’t let a failure keep you down or keep you from moving forward. Learn from them, conquer the obstacles or move in a different direction if necessary. “Success is not built on success. It’s built on failure. It’s built on frustration. Sometimes it is built on catastrophe.” – Sumner Redstone 4. CHANGE YOUR MINDSET. Losing weight seems to be the number one New Year’s resolution. The first thing we do is put a number on it... 5, 10, 15 pounds. The higher the number, the more overwhelming it can be. Instead of assigning a number to it, change your mind set from sacrificing the “fun” foods to sacrificing your health. When you skip out on eating something “fun,” you haven’t sacrificed anything, but when you do, you sacrifice your chances of feeling healthier and happier. That high that we feel when we indulge in sweet treats or comfort foods is temporary, but the negative Tatum Pérez effects are long term. FITNESS EXPERT Happy New Year, and may 2016 be your best year ever!

Tips for Selecting

W

a Primary Care Physician

hen you’re young and fit, you don’t think you need a primary care doctor—and most of the time you may not. But when the flu hits or you sustain an unexpected injury, there’s peace of mind in knowing there is someone familiar you can call. As you age, it becomes even more critical to have a doctor who is acquainted with your health history and can guide you through the screenings and vaccinations needed for continued good health.

Get TRIPLE the results with each treatment!

So, how do you pick someone you’ll feel comfortable with talking candidly and someone who has the expertise you need? Amanda Houchens, MD, family physician with Carmel Family Medicine, offers a few tips on starting the selection process. 1. DETERMINE WHICH DOCTORS ARE IN YOUR HEALTH INSURANCE NETWORK. You will pay less for an office visit if you select a physician who has a negotiated relationship with your insurance company. This is referred to as “in-network.” Your insurance plan usually has a website with lists of in-network doctors or a phone number on the back of your insurance card that you can call.

Introducing NEW Service!

7e Cavi Non-Invasive Lipo

1. LEAN MUSCLE BUILD Strengthens muscles, builds muscle endurance & increases bone density. 2. INCH LOSS Lose an average of 3 inches in your first session! 3. RID CELLULITE Tightens & provides smoother looking skin.

2. DECIDE WHICH SPECIALTY YOU NEED. The term “primary care” encompasses a few different specialties. Family medicine doctors accept newborns through the elderly and treat a wide variety of conditions. Internal medicine doctors focus on patients over the age of 18 and specialize in the diagnosis and management of disease and chronic conditions, such as high blood pressure or diabetes. Pediatricians focus only on newborns and children up to age 18. 3. ASK YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY MEMBERS. You may feel more comfortable seeing a doctor who has been recommended by a family member, co-worker or friend. Don’t be afraid to ask around, or ask another healthcare professional you know, such as your pharmacist or dentist. 4. THINK ABOUT LOCATION AND COMMUNICATION. Would it make more sense to have your doctor located close to your home or your work? What day and time is the doctor available? Will you need to take time off work to visit the office, or are there after work or weekend hours? Also, ask what hospital the doctor uses if you should ever need a hospital admission. Language is another important consideration. Make sure the doctor speaks a language you can understand, so you will have clear communication. Many doctors now use email or an online portal to communicate test results or appointment reminders. Decide whether this feature is important to you. 5. GET FIRST-HAND INFORMATION. Call the office to gauge the attitude of the people who answer the phone. Are they friendly and efficient? Do they answer in a timely manner? Ask how far in advance you need to schedule an appointment and how long the wait time is when you arrive for an appointment. If you feel comfortable, make an initial appointment. On your first visit, be sure to bring along a list of current medications you take (including vitamins) and information about your personal medical history. If you are not happy after your initial visit, call your insurance to see if they will allow you to make a change during the course of the plan year.

KITCHEN Innovations for 2016

i

t’s that time of year again to look ahead and see what design trends are expected to surface in the next 12 months. From counters to cabinets, we anticipate some exciting and groundbreaking innovations in 2016. COUNTERS Engineered stone countertops have sparked more interest lately than in years past, and they’re expected to be used more often than ever before. It used to be that many engineered stand-ins lacked design appeal and appeared unrealistic. However, after many years of development, engineered stone manufacturers are now providing product that gives the illusion of real stone, but without the added upkeep or maintenance associated with the natural material.

TEXTURE Make your kitchen more stylish by creating depth and interest through the use of different textures. Use textured tiles, wood, glass or metal on your backsplash to add dimension and visual interest to your kitchen. Textured laminate cabinet fronts are anticipated to gain popularity as well. Other ways to incorporate texture could include adding a partial wood countertop to a kitchen island or opting for stone or timber flooring. Either way, texture will add a warm interest to any kitchen in 2016.

CABINETS Horizontally-oriented cabinets with top hinges have been making a surge in popularity, too. Until recently, standard vertically-oriented and square cabinets have been the traditional choice; however, horizontal cabinets offer other options for functionality and design aesthetics. Shaker doors are also coming back into style. Their clean, sleek appearance, along with the versatility to compliment almost every design style continues to make the Shaker door the preferred choice. Regarding cabinet finishes, paints, dark-toned stains and fun textures will also be seen more often.

VINTAGE FLAVOR Bringing older, vintage looks into the kitchen is also appealing to the 2016 consumer. Whether it is a farmhouse sink, retro appliances or period pendant lighting, adding a vintage look to a kitchen can bring interest to an otherwise ordinary room. In order to stay somewhat modern, we recommend blending vintage flair with other contemporary touches. For the homeowner who may be more interested in hi-tech offerings versus a vintage style, there are plenty of options. Wi-Fi enabled refrigerators that allow you to order pizza and connect to social media are just the beginning. Cabinet companies are also taking notice of this trend and including built-in charging stations, hands-free functionality and tablet holders.

inter has arrived. While that may be good news for skiers, it means the beginning of months of confinement for beach bums. Fortunately, for the colderblooded among us, warmer weather is just a plane ride away. So as the cold sets in, get ready to head south with the birds to these winter island escapes. TOBAGO CAYS, THE GRENADINES There may be no better place than the Tobago Cays for pinballing among a cluster of Caribbean islands on a sailboat. Grab some friends and book a crewed yacht for a five-day cruise ($12,000 all-inclusive for six people). You’ll anchor in deserted coves, like tiny Petit Tabac’s, and wake up to the voices of locals from nearby islands surrounding your vessel, selling just-caught fish and freshly baked bread from brightly colored runabouts. CABBAGE KEY, FLORIDA Turns out you don’t have to fly halfway around the world to disappear. In the early 1930s, the family of mystery novelist Mary Roberts Rinehart built a sprawling home on a 28-foot shell mound amassed by the Calusa Indians on an island off Florida’s west coast. Not much has changed on Cabbage Key since. In 1976, the Rinehart home was turned into the Cabbage Key Inn, the only lodging on the island (from $119). The front porch looks out onto Pine Island Sound; there are no roads, cars, or even room keys here. ACCESS: Fly to Fort Myers, taxi 20 miles north to Pine Island,

and catch a 20-minute water taxi ($32) to Cabbage Key. ISLA BASTIMENTOS, PANAMA Unlike the nearby party town of Bocas, hardly anybody knows about Isla Bastimentos. A water taxi will drop you in Old Bank, where most of the island’s residents live. Head straight to Al Natural, an eco-lodge on the western tip with seven seaside open-air bungalows (doubles from $310 all-inclusive). Spend your days hiking nearby jungle footpaths to the long swaths of beach at Wizard and Red Frog’s, or grab one of the resort’s kayaks and paddle 30 minutes through a mangrove tunnel to the village at Salt Creek. ACCESS: Fly to Panama City, taxi over to Albrook airport, and fly Air Panama to Bocas Town on Isla Colón. Then catch a water taxi ($3 to $5) at the Bocas Marina for the 15-minute ride over to Bastimentos.

Indianapolis

The Race Capitol of the World

Indianapolis is a major center for automobile racing. Since 1911, the Indianapolis 500 has been the premier event in the National Championship of open wheel car racing. The series' headquarters and many of its teams are based in the city. Indianapolis is so well connected with racing that it has inspired the name "Indy car," used for both the competition and type of car used in it. Indianapolis Motor Speedway hosts three major motor racing events every year: the Indianapolis 500, the Brickyard 400, and the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix.
